A new study shows that a majority of hotels in the Boundary support a hotel tax with the money raised going into marketing for those hotels. If the plan goes through and is approved by the provincial government, local hotels would be charging each visitor up to two per cent extra on their bill. The hotel tax was one of the main topics brought up at a recent meeting between shareholders Tuesday evening at the Community Futures building in Grand Forks. The meeting was hosted by the Christina Gateway Community Development Association (CDA) but no official organization has been formed yet for what would be a destination tourism group for the Boundary. “We received money from SIBAC (Southern Interior Beetle Action Coalition) and that’s how Christina Gateway was able to contract me to go through the Boundary and do a tourism survey,” said Cindy Alblas, project coordinator for Christina Gateway CDA. Albas said the survey looked at what the main opportunities in the region are as well as the main challenges. “We also talked about ways we could improve our region and one of the ways is by choosing to collect the municipal regional district tax which is an up to two per cent tax that hotel accommodators with more than four or more rooms can charge,” she said. “This money would go to a destination marketing organization (DMO) that would be formed in our region.” Alblas said the money raised from the tax is expected to be about $60,000 per year and is required to go only to the direct marketing of our region. In order to charge the municipal regional district “hotel room” tax (MRDT), the organization needs 51 per cent support from all accommodators in the region as well 51 per cent support from all hotel rooms in the region. Alblas said at this point they are at 68 per cent of accommodators and 72.5 per cent of rooms which are in support of implementing this tax in our region. The tax would include the whole Boundary from Christina Lake up to, but not including Big White, which is already collecting

Turbo is a 12-year-old Chesapeake Bay Retriever who lives at Jewel Lake. Because he has such an oily coat, the snow and cold water don’t bother him at all. He likes fishing with his owner, sleeping in the house and getting treats and bones. He’s got a very sweet personality, not much for barking. He’s already made friends with all the locals up at the lake.

RDKB approves commissions CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary held their board meeting on Jan. 29 in Grand Forks. At that meeting, the Advisory Planning Commissions (APC) for each electoral area were approved. In Area C/Christina Lake under director and board chair Grace McGregor, the APC group will consist of Dave Bartlett, Peter Darbyshire, David Durand, Jennifer Horahan, Terry Mooney, Butch Bisaro, Don Nelson and Jeff Olsen. In Area D/Rural Grand Forks under director Roly Russell, the APC is Bob DeMaertelaere, Edith MacAllister, Deb Billwiller, Lesley Matthews, Werner Behrens, Andrew Novokshonoff and David Reid. The APCs help guide the electoral area director in making important decisions regarding land use planning. The Grand Forks and District Recreation Commission was also appointed and will consist of Gene Robert, Cindy Strukoff, Dean Engen, Ken Johnston and George Longden. Appointed to the Christina Lake Parks and Recreation Commission were Dave Beattie, Paul Beattie, Carlo Crema, Bob Dupee, Dan Marcoux, Don Nelson, Liz Stewart, Dianne Wales, Larry Walker and Brenda Auge. Funding for speckled dace
The RDKB received a letter from Leona Aglukkaq, the minister of the environment, informing them on receiving approval for funding for the Habitat Enhancement and Restoration Program for Speckled Dace in the Kettle River. The funding is approved for up to $30,000. Age-friendly planning
The RDKB was informed by letter that the project Charting a Course for an Age-friendly Christina Lake has received funding in the amount of $20,000 from the Ministry of Health. The RDKB will receive a cheque for $14,000 shortly. The remaining 30 per cent will be available after a satisfactory final report and financial summary has been submitted to UBCM. Under the terms of the fund-
ing, the project must be completed within 12 months and no later than Dec. 31. “We’ve been wanting to do this age-friendly study for the whole of Christina Lake for a while,” said Grace McGregor, Area C/Christina Lake director and board chair. “What it’s for is to hire someone to hear what everybody wants coming down the road as this community ages.” Christina Lake bridge study
The RDKB board of directors approved $20,000 for a feasibility study on a pedestrian bridge over Christina Creek in Christina Lake. The study would look into the design and construct costs for the bridge. The Christina Lake Parks and Rec Commission has already put out a request for proposal and selected MMM Group as the winning bidder to do the study. Currently, the only crossing available to pedestrians is the sidewalk along the existing Crowsnest Highway Bridge. It is the RDKB’s intent to provide a safer transportation corridor for pedestrians and cyclists over Christina Creek. The proposed pedestrian bridge would provide an alternative route by spanning over the waterway between Kimurab Road and Christina Road on the east and west stream banks respectively. “What we’re trying to do is to have that project ready if there should be any grants at all that can fill the bill,” said McGregor. Riparian site
The RDKB directors approved $42,762.11 in gas tax money for the Christina Lake riparian and wetland demonstration site and native plant nursery. The project proposes to return portions of the foreshore of Christina Lake Community Nature Park to habitat indicative of native riparian/wetland ecological communities. These habitats help to ensure the long-term maintenance of water quality, wildlife habitat and proper filtration of upland contaminants such as septic leachate. The project will also offer education opportunities for the public, landowners, school groups and hands-on involvement in the

native plant nursery and demonstration site. “It’s an exciting project,” said McGregor. “It’ll show everyone, even tourists, how riparian areas work. People will have something to look at and the actual plants that grow there.” This multi-organizational collaboration will provide information from the data generated to be used regionally in other key riparian/wetland areas. Grants-in-Aid
The RDKB directors approved the following grants-in-aid: Christina Gateway Community Development Assoc./Electoral Area C – $4,687.20; Boundary Country Regional Chamber of Commerce/Area C – $2,500, Area D – $2,500; Zone 6 Seniors Games/Area C – $500; Grand Forks Figure Skating Club/Area D – $1,000; and City of Grand Forks/Area D for Family Day festivities– $500. Groundwater monitoring
The RDKB board received a staff report from Goran Denkovski, engineering and safety coordinator, with recommendations for the selection of a consultant to complete groundwater monitoring for a three year term at RDKB solid waste facilities is presented. Denkovski recommended that the board approve a contract between Bear Environment Ltd. and the RDKB in the amount of $79,835 for three years to complete groundwater monitoring at the Grand Forks Landfill, Rock Creek Transfer Station, Beaverdell Transfer Station, McKelvey Creek Landfill and West Boundary Landfill. Mosquito control
In a staff report from the RDKB, Denkovski recommended a contract with Morrow Bioscience in the amount of $185,400 for three years to complete mosquito control in area C/Christina Lake and Area D/Rural Grand Forks including the City of Grand Forks. The 2015 budget for mosquito control for Area C would be $14,900 and for Area D it would be $46,900. These relate to a 56-per-cent decrease in Area C and a 57-per-cent decrease in Area D including the City of Grand Forks.

‘Main Street’ showcased during Heritage Week SUBMITTED
to the Grand Forks Gazette
The theme for Heritage Week 2015 in British Columbia is Main Street: At The Heart of the Community. The week kicks off with the national Heritage Day designated by Heritage Canada The National Trust. Main Street, King Street, Queen Street, Water Street, Market Street, Broadway—whatever their name, main streets and traditional downtowns are at the heart of communities big and small across British Columbia. Centres of commerce, civic institutions, community commemoration and events, main streets embody the history and evolution of a community. The gallery 2 Heritage Committee will be commemorating the revitalization of the Grand Forks downtown “Main Street.” Local businesses have agreed to set up displays in their stores in honour of our main street theme. Gallery 2 has set up a public display taking visitors back 60 years ago to Market Avenue and sharing a glimpse of times past. The display will open Feb. 17 and run into mid-March. For those who love to reminisce please come and spend some time at gallery 2. Tax has benefits
Though some may see it as just another cash grab, the proposed new hotel room tax will greatly benefit local accommodators. Unlike provincial and federal sales tax of which our local benefits are dubious, all money raised with the hotel room tax will come right back to the region to be used in marketing our local hotels and bed and breakfasts. Though the process is still in its early stages, and has failed twice before, the new group has strong backing and support from many local stakeholders and interest groups. The tax will be two per cent or less, which is less than the cost of a cup of coffee for one night. And, as said before, the money comes back to our community and goes back into promoting tourism in the area. One of the biggest areas where local hoteliers would like to see improvements is improving the shoulder season. One can certainly take a look at Christina Lake as a prime example of an area where hotels and B&Bs live and die by their summer business. Any efforts on bringing in more people in the spring and fall would be greatly appreciated. By pooling money and resources, tourism organizations throughout the Kootenay Boundary will be able to use resources such as social media, TV, newspaper and other marketing resources to attract more tourists. More tourists mean more money spent in our region on everything from restaurants to local businesses to service stations in addition to accommodations.
The missing years Second Opinion JIM HOLTZ Now let me get this straight. Lynn College, somewhere in Florida, has an app which it can install on the tablets it gives all its students, so that parents and teachers can keep track of whether or not the student was actually in class. It can record and tally and do all kinds of number crunching that will direct the parent to the right conclusion about their wastrel son or partying daughter. This fits a much needed gap in the ability of parents to monitor their children from cradle to basement suite. Before now, parents could cover almost ever age from birth to the age at which the fledgling child finally, in his/

At the same time, this period begins the process that will persist for the next 14 years of parents driving, coaching, cheering for, encouraging and always being present at every extracurricular sporting event, artsy program, and feel-good

They will drive them all over, and wait for them forever, buying clothes, uniforms, outfits special shoes and equipment, all so they can be there to help them succeed. ‘Love affair” like the Point of letter was about process ultimate story Letters
to the editor
Editor, The Gazette: Further to the letter of Jan. 21 from Richard Fausten, I would like to respond by saying that he and not I have missed the point of my letter. The point of my letter is one of how our democratic process works and not about whether or not the public has a right to express their opinions, which they certainly should have and do have. The laws that govern us are created by those that we choose to elect. Those who are elected are not civil servants and thus not subject to dismissal. For our city council they are in fact elected to govern (rule) within the limits of the Municipal Act for a specific term. Public opinion may
or may not sway the way decisions are made. At the end of the term the electors will again have the democratic right to elect the successive civic officials to govern and hope for the best. It is also interesting to note that the two members of the previous council garnered about 56 per cent of the vote for mayor compared to 32 per cent for our new mayor, which sounds to me like an endorsement for the actions of the previous council members. My conversations with residents lead me to believe that it is only a vocal minority that are opposed to having water meters, and/or paying for the excess use of water. Ron Mellett, Grand Forks
Police need to better communicate
Editor, The Gazette:
An open letter to the Honourable Suzanne Anton, Attorney General and Minister of Justice: I am writing on behalf of the Boundary Area Retired Teachers’ Association to express our concern over a recent violent attack on a senior in our community. On Jan. 11, a 70-year-old senior was on his routine morning walk through downtown Grand Forks when he encountered a young man with a “shiny red baseball bat.” This young man told the senior that someone had knocked on his or his neighbour’s door and then suddenly attacked him with the baseball bat. The senior was struck on the head and the body; but fortunately, he was able to escape to a nearby business where he called 911. The young attacker fled the scene and the RCMP were dispatched. Later that same day, the police were able to identify “a person of interest”; however, to this date (Jan. 28), there have been no charges laid nor have the police issued a further report on the status of their investigation. Despite the violent and random nature of this incident, the public has had few assurances that the security of the community has been restored. As educators in small rural communities, we have experienced the increase in mental health needs over the years and the paucity of services that have been provided. In the past two years alone, we have seen the destruction of two historic hotels and extensive fire damage to our city hall. In both cases the offenders were dealing with
Inspect Your Tires
progressive mental health issues. Whatever the cost for providing additional outreach services for those with mental health needs, it is not as expensive as ignoring those needs. As rural educators we have also seen what damage rumour can cause to an individual and their families. While the police are being careful not to identify the “person of interest,” the community has already jumped to the conclusion that the perpetrator is a well-known local resident. It is distressing to see someone, who may be innocent, targeted in this way. We can only hope that the police will clarify this shortly by identifying their “person of interest.” Finally, as seniors we are reassessing our safety in this community. As the police have not assured the public that there is no current risk, many of us are starting to change how we commute, preferring now to drive more and walk less. For many in this retirement community, it means giving up the very thing that attracted us to retire here. Without clear communication from the police, our lifestyle has been put at risk. In closing, we hope that the local RCMP detachment can make a strong effort to communicate and to engage the community when there are serious incidents. We also hope that the provincial government together with the health authorities can prioritize the delivery of mental health services for rural communities. During a discussion about a request from the sponsors of Park in the Park, Ross said, “Car shows are passe.” The sponsors were asking for $800 - $1,000 from the city to purchase an advertizing banner to be hung over Highway 3 near Fourth Street. Why are Canadians and Americans so in love with cars, particularly classic cars? When did the love affair begin? Emily Badger, a historian, has written an enlightening explanation in an article called “The myth of the American love Rousing affair with cars” posted on the Washington Post Wonkblog. She mentions Peter the Rabble Norton, a historian at the University of ROY RONAGHAN Virginia, who explains how the affair started. Norton states, “This ‘love affair’ thesis is like the ultimate story. It’s one of the biggest public relations coups of all time. It’s always treated as folk wisdom, as an organic growth from society. One of the signs of its success is that everyone forgets it was invented as a public relations campaign.” According to Norton, the term “love affair” was apparently coined in 1961 during a weekly hour-long television program called the DuPont Show of the Week, sponsored by DuPont. (At the time the company owned a 23 per cent interest in General Motors.) The program was called “Merrily We roll Along” and promoted as “the story of America’s love affair with the automobile.” The program was aired in response to people’s protests against the need to accommodate cars with the construction of highways. Cities and towns were disrupted when whole neighbourhoods were razed to make way for freeways. People were also protesting the threat posed by cars to their freedom as pedestrians. Groucho Marx was a key player in the television program. He used the metaphor of the car as the new woman in town called “Lizzie.” The driver, a man, fell in love with Lizzie and their “burning love affair” eventually led to marriage. They had a long honeymoon and a few challenges. In Marx’s view it was a typical marriage. Marx is reported to have said, “We don’t always know how to get along with her, but you certainly can’t get along without her.” According to Norton, the love affair analogy helped implant two ideas: that we are bound to cars by something stronger than need; and that people who challenge the human/car bond are out of step with their fellow citizens. The love affair continues to this day and it manifests itself in classic car shows across the continent. It may not be so heated, but it still exists. Badger states, “The phenomenon of sports cars, weekend cars and collector cars is real. So, too, is the allure for many people of road trips, scenic highways or weekend drives through the country.” We might add “car shows” to the list. People who can afford them continue to collect classic cars and they like showing them off. That will be the case in Grand Forks during the coming summer. Historian Norton disputes the claim that people wanted car-dependent cities and suburbs. He states that what they really wanted was to get rid of the cars because the dangers they presented Cars are still a danger to pedestrians and urbanized wildlife like deer and, in the case of deer, the accepted solution is to destroy them. That is certainly the case in B.C. where communities approve of deer “culls”. A better solution would be to lower speed limits in the areas most frequented by the animals. Are car shows passe? Interest in them may be waning but they will be with us until the people who fell in love with them in the first place pass on. After all, cars are just a means of transportation.

Citizens should denounce the bad
Editor, The Gazette: “If hacking is your problem, do you have a problem?” said the man punching on his laptop. That statement reminded me of Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain who closed the prestigious paper News of the World because one woman had been hacked to death by the telephone system there. How many people suddenly moved from their homes, jobs, activities, etc. saying nothing about their reasons for doing so? How many others suddenly started taking pills, buying creams, see the doctor for incidental occurrences, unable to state clearly what happens to them? How many others develop 20th century diseases that were unheard of some years ago? Lawyer Richard Humphrey of Ontario has stated that: “The use of magnetic rays to blackmail, coerce, cause pain, damage, injure another human being constitutes criminal actions against the person and civil authorities must be informed of their occurrences.” In other words, the obligation of every citizen is to announce what is good and denounce what is bad— that should take place in every civilized society. J. Sully, Grand Forks
Meters are corporate scam
Editor, The Gazette: I find this whole water meter issue quite appalling. Water conservation goes way beyond sticking a little intrusive ticker onto your lines. How many water meter advocates have piped up about the massive destruction up where our water comes from (the watersheds), about the massive amounts of water used and poisoned for fracking, for making new vehicles, for the water flushed with a single pee. You would probably do better to change every single toilet in town to the incredible water-efficient toilets now available than to spend money installing water meters. This whole thing is another corporate scam, sold to eager beavers. And, every week is Water Week, every day is Family Day. We are being fed such unctuous baloney. Angelica Herlihy, Grand Forks

zation is going to look in our region,” she said, “because there are options we can look at. It was a very positive meeting; very hopeful. The biggest positive of all of this is that we will have collaboration of all of our accommodations as well as the tourism industry around the table region-wide. Now we have to be thinking regionally. We don’t live in a place with high population in each of our communities so we have to think collaboratively to move forward.” Alblas said all the regions surrounding the Boundary are collecting the MRDT hotel tax and building their “tourism empires.” “We are among the 10 per cent of B.C. which does not collect the MRDT,” she said. “We need to begin ours and that’s what this destination marketing organization will help us do,” she said. Alblas said they will continue to meet and decide on the next steps.

the MRDT. “We are in a good position to put in an application,” she said. At the meeting on Feb. 3, stakeholders heard presentations from tourism groups from both Rossland and Nelson as well as from a representative from Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association (TOTA), which is the regional representative for Destination BC. “They all talked about how their destination marketing organizations were established and how they have benefited their region,” said Alblas. “It was very evident that every year they’ve had increased bed stays. That would be the mandate with our business plan as well.” Alblas said all of the accommodators wanted to increase the length of the shoulder season. “The meeting was about bringing all of our stakeholders and partners together so we could have a discussion about how that destination marketing organi-

Cupid’s connection to love Hearts tend to be aflutter on Valentine’s Day, and Cupid just might be the scoundrel behind those starry-eyed feelings. Just who is this arrow-wielding Cupid and how did he become associated with Valentine’s Day?
minds with some frequency. He is boyish because love is irrational, and he carries arrows and a torch because love can both wound but also inflame the heart. Cupid has traditionally been portrayed as benevolent, if not mischievous. After all, his goal is to bring two lovers together. His arsenal was equipped with two different kinds of arrows. People pierced by gold-tipped arrows would succumb to uncontrollable desire. Those afflicted by an arrow with a blunt tip of lead desired only to flee.
was, he accidentally dropped the arrow meant for her and pricked himself instead. He immediately became enamored with her. Psyche, who had not been able to marry like her other sisters, feared she had been cursed by the gods in some way. She was sent away to avoid the premonition of marrying a monster, but Cupid, hidden from sight, ended up visiting Psyche and gaining her trust and affection. The pair then married, although Psyche had never seen her husband in the light of day because he forbade her to look upon him. After all, he was a god and she was a mortal. One night Psyche disobeyed Cupid’s edict and snuck a peek by candlelight. She was amazed by his beauty and became startled, wounding herself on one of his arrows. Psyche ended up dropping hot wax on Cupid, which woke him up and he ran off. Psyche wandered endlessly trying to find her lost husband and had to go through various trials established by a still-jealous Venus. In one of her trials, she ended up getting put to sleep, but Cupid revived her and pleaded with Jupiter to make Psyche immortal and let her be his true wife. Jupiter ultimately granted that wish. Cupid will forever be connected to the concepts of love and affection, which is why he has become an unofficial symbol of Valentine’s Day.
God of love and desire Ancient Greeks and Romans were prolific storytellers and used mythology to explain many of the mysteries of life. Certain feelings and happenings on Earth were attributed to the moods and actions of Gods who presided over the people. In Roman mythology, “Cupid and Psyche” Cupid was the god Cupid may have been of desire, erotic love, responsible for bringing attraction and affection. many people together His Greek counterpart with his special arrows, was Eros, while in Latin but he also was granted Cupid was known as the opportunity to Amor. Exploring the connection between the heart and love
Cupid’s appearance Cupid has appeared in different ways in illustrations and other artwork throughout history. Sometimes he is depicted as a winged, chubby infant carrying a bow and a quiver of arrows. Classical Greek art depicts Cupid as a slender, winged youth. The reason Cupid has wings is because lovers are known to be flighty and change their moods and
doors or windows as a symbol of Valentine’s Day. Young valentines may share candy hearts printed with silly sentiments. A symbolic heart bears no resemblance to an anatomical heart, and yet it is used to represent the deepest feelings of affection a person can share. Some may wonder just how the emotions of love became tied up in the shape of a heart, even though it’s widely known that the brain, and not the heart, governs affections. In ancient times, people believed that the heart was the center of all human emotions. Since the heart is prominently located in the center of the chest and the middle of the body, it became the cornerstone of human feelings. Love is considered to be one of the most profound and strongest human emotions, therefore it was reasoned that the feeling must emanate from the heart. Surprisingly, the heart has not always been the only organ associated with love. During the Middle Ages, the heart was deemed a useless organ. Followers of the Greek physician Galen theorized that the liver actually was the seat of the soul and love. The first depictions of a symbolic heart date back to the 11th century, when the heart

Chocolate historically more than just food Many cannot resist chocolate, that beloved creamy, sweet confection derived from cocoa beans, milk and sugar. All over the world people love to indulge in chocolate, especially come Valentine’s Day. According to data from Leatherhead Food Research, Switzerland consumes more chocolate per capita than any country in the world. Ireland, the United Kingdom, Austria and Belgium round out the top five. Despite its apparent popularity in Europe, chocolate was first popularized among the Olmecs of Mexico, who used the cocoa beans more than 3,500 years ago. However, it wasn’t until the last 200 years that chocolate turned into the sweet treat that is known and loved today. Aztecs believed cocoa had aphrodisiac properties, and chocolate contains a chemical called phenylethylamine, which is released naturally in the body when a person falls in love. The aroma of chocolate can induce relaxation, and chocolate also contains dopamine, a natural painkiller. While chocolate is now used primarily as a food, over the years it has had many other uses - some of which are quite unique. Here are some of the many ways people have used chocolate throughout history. • Money: The Mayans once used cocoa beans as a form of currency, as did the Aztecs. In this instance, money actually did grow on trees. • Dental health: Arman Sadeghpour, a researcher at Tulane University, says an extract of cocoa powder could be an effective alternative to using fluoride. Chocolate-enhanced toothpaste may be the next big thing. • Fuel: Chocolate has been used to feed bacteria that produce hydrogen, which can be used as a clean power source. • Medicine: Chocolate is full of antioxidants, which serve all
sorts of disease-fighting benefits in the body. Dark chocolate provides the greatest number of health benefits, as it contains flavonols, which stimulate the brain and support the circulatory system. • Fashion: Designers and chocolatiers worldwide collaborate to make sweet outfits at Le Salon du Chocolat’s fashion shows. • Special effects: Before the days of computerChocolate is delicious to eat, but it has served many other purposes over the years. simulated special effects, moviemakers had to employ other methods to produce realistic results. Legend has it that Bosco brand chocolate syrup was used as blood in the famed shower scene in the classic horror movie “Psycho.” Bosco was used because it showed up great in black and white. • Skin care: Cocoa butter, a component of chocolate, has long been used to moisturize and soothe dry skin. Many spas now incorporate organic chocolate into their healing and beauty therapies. • Perfume: Chocolate produces more than 400 distinct smells and has been used to make perfume more fragrant. • Mood enhancement: Chocolate may help to improve mood, as it is a mild stimulant and can affect serotonin levels, which govern those feel-good feelings, in the brain. • Postage: In 2013, Belgium’s post office sold limited-edition stamps that were varnished with 40 percent of a cocoa product. The stamps smelled and tasted like chocolate. Chocolate has been tempting taste buds for thousands of years. It’s also been used in some very unique ways, even if, come Valentine’s Day, the majority of people would be content just to eat it.

was drawn to resemble a pinecone held upside down with the point facing upward. The scalloped heart that is more familiar today first arose in the early 14th century. Around the same time, the heart was depicted with the point facing downward and the indentation at the base. Naturally, as time passed and more was learned about human anatomy, it became obvious that the brain was
the seat of all emotion and thought processes. However, as the brain was something intangible in a living body in ancient times, and the beating heart could be much more readily monitored - with a pulse rate speeding up when a person is excited or aroused - it’s easy to see how the link between the heart and love has endured. Although the human heart is not bright red like symbolic
hearts, that was the color chosen. Red has long been associated with passion, so it made sense to depict the heart in a bright red hue. Many other theories have been offered regarding the symbolic heart and its representation of love. While there’s no definitive correlation between love and hearts, the heart has become an accepted symbol of the emotion and the season of romance

Selkirk instructor retires, welcomes Tracy CRAIG LINDSAY
Grand Forks Gazette
After 23 years with Selkirk College in Grand Forks, Christy Luke has retired from the program she helped develop. Luke’s shoes will be hard to fill, but it looks like successor Spencer Tracy will be up to the task. “We work with students who either complete high school or have been out of school for a number of years and want to upgrade and in many cases continue on to college,” said Tracy, the new Adult Basic Education (ABE) instructor and intake coordinator at Selkirk. “They come to us for some guidance on what the prerequisites will be for additional study at another college or university.”
Tracy said the college also caters to those people who want to complete their Grade 12 diploma after dropping out. “And then there are people who want to come because they have a desire to learn,” added Luke. “Some people want to finish their math. It’s been an ongoing issue and now they want to finish it.” Spencer said students at the school are all ages from 18 up to their 60s and have all kinds of academic backgrounds. Most of their classes are in person at the college four days a week, Monday to Thursday. Tracy came to Grand Forks from Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories where he had a similar position. “My wife and I were thinking of relocating and exploring other options,” he said. “We didn’t want to move to a city. I
wanted to work at a college. So right away the list was getting smaller.” Tracy and his wife are very active in the outdoors with hiking and skiing. Friends told him that Grand Forks and the area was great for that. “To be honest, I had never heard of Grand Forks before,” he said. “I saw a posting and spoke to my friends who had heard of it. They all said ‘you will love it.’ Everyone who spoke said we should give it a try. We’ve only been here two months but we love it.” Tracy said there are plenty of services available in the region for his wife and their three children. He says the transition to Grand Forks and the college has been made easy by the help of Luke. “Christy has been phenom-

She said she has thoroughly enjoyed her time at Selkirk College in Grand Forks, which came in two parts. Luke was at the college from 1978-81 and then went off to work for several different television stations. She returned in 1984 and has worked steadily until retiring late last year. For her retirement party, the college rented the art gallery and 100 people attended. “It was great,” she said. “It was a

First of all, a financial planner will sound out a client just like a doctor does with a patient. Your financial situation will be assessed, and then the diagnosis and treatment will follow. A planner will ask you what you want to look like in ten years, in terms of investment risk: round, thin, all in proportion? Once you have discussed the level of financial independence you are aiming for, along with your retirement objectives and your children’s education plans, a financial planner will note and highlight any obstacles. These might include an insufficient projected income, indebtedness, and unsuitable income tax bracket. Then, he or she will propose some exercises — rigorous or gentle, depending on your constitution — that will help you attain the state of financial health you want. Legitimate professional financial planners have a college diploma or university degree, along with specialized training. Ask which professional associations they belong to. Be sure to check that their advice is given independently; that means find out who pays them. It is recommended that you meet at least once a year with your financial planner, so that they can put a human face to your file and so that you can continue to be assured that he or she is a trustworthy professional.
RETIREMENT

Planning your retirement in five steps
Planning your retirement well is essential for the peace of mind of both you and your family. It should be done early and intelligently. Here are the five steps to follow: 1 – PLAN at what age do you plan on retiring? The answer to this question will motivate you to calculate the revenue acceptable for the lifestyle you wish to maintain. The norm is around 65 per cent of the revenue you earned during the last few years in the workplace. 2 – CALCULATE Take into account all the revenues which will be at your disposal during retirement: your employer’s pension plan, your RRSP, your share of an inheritance originating from a dissolved marriage, federal and provincial pensions, investments in a family business, the value of your home if you are thinking of selling it, the revenue from a part-time job, an inheritance, etc. 3 – EVALUATE When the time comes to retire, what will your financial situation look like? To know this you must evaluate all your expenses and needs for retirement. Will your budget need to take into account holidays every year, a condominium in Florida, going back to school? 4 – QUANTIFY It’s not impossible to make up the shortfall between what you have and what you would like to have. Set your objective right now as far as the savings you will need for later in life. Consider all possibilities and consult a specialist in order to make the best decisions. 5 – TRANSFER If you are a business person, plan management succession and the transfer of the property so your business will survive intact. Don’t forget that retirement planning is closely connected to tax and inheritance planning.

Although there is still plenty of snow on the ground, it’s not too soon to start thinking about soccer. The Boundary Youth Soccer Association (BYSA) is accepting registrations for the upcoming spring season. “Sign-up is going good so far,” said Jeff Olsen, BYSA program coordinator. “Compared to previous years, we’re on about the same track. We’re looking at about 300 kids.” Last year’s fall youth soccer in the Boundary was cancelled for a number of various reasons, says Olsen. But they are all set to return in the spring and plans are to be back next fall as well. Spring soccer begins April 12 with everyone playing in a play-day in Midway at Boundary Central Secondary School field. “Practices will be happening a week before that,” he said. “Coaches will be getting in touch with their teams and players and all that in March.” Spring soccer runs the gamut of ages right from two years old up to 15. The league is split into divisions starting with Kicks4Kids, which is free, for ages two to four; under seven; under nine; under 11; under 13; and under 16. BYSA is open to youth from Christina Lake right to Rock Creek and every place in between. Olsen said they are always hoping to get more players out from the West Boundary. “We know the kids are out there,” he
said. “We’re working hard with some PR stuff to get the word out. It’s been a challenge over the years. But there is a good group of people that do want to play.” The league will play every weekend from the start date right to the yearend wrap up on June 27 at GFSS field in Grand Forks. Games are played on Sundays and the location moves around the Boundary. Boys and girls are all welcome and play together. Games are on Sunday except for the wrap-up. This will be the fifth year for the BYSA offering youth soccer in the Boundary. The focus is on participation, fun and improving your skills. “Everyone gets equal play-time regardless of ability,” said Olsen. “All we ask for is a commitment to the league and to their team. We instill competi-
tion but not competition at all costs. We want kids to work hard, learn hard and play hard but we don’t keep standings or scores.” Olsen said winning in the league is defined by a different measure. “Winning is: did you do your best? Did you play hard and play together with your team? If you did then you won,” said Olsen. “The goal is just to get the kids playing.” Registration is continuing and is only $85 per player for the whole season up until Feb. 22. On Feb. 23 the registration goes up to $150. To register go online to www.boundaryyouthsoccer.com. The league is also looking for coaches for the younger groups. Coaches will receive training at no charge. If interested email boundarysoccer@gmail.com.

CHURCH DIRECTORY Teeter totters used to be found on many playgrounds. It was fun to go up and down. Then one of the players would decide it would be fun to stay down and let the other person up in the air. As cruel as that was, it was more cruel when the person on the bottom would get off the teeter totter; and the person on the top would come crashing down. Sometimes we may experience a teeter-totter life—a life of ups and downs and sometimes a painful downward crash. Are we alone in this? No. When our faith is in Jesus, He will not leave us alone in our up-and-down life. Jesus promised in Matthew, “I am with you to the end.” In the midst of our ups and downs, we have a Savior who never leaves us.

City in 2006 from then-Mayor Neil Krog. In 2014, she was named one of the local Women of Distinction from the Boundary Women’s Coalition. Although she has slowed down her involvement a tad, she is still a very active member with the local choir and helps organize music week and other events. Gobbett believes her leadership and organizational skills began when she was young. Growing up she was the second oldest of nine children. “I was always used to organizing them because I was older,” she said. “I just seem to enjoy that.” Her parents moved to B.C. from the prairies. Gobbett was born in a barn in Chilliwack. Shortly after graduation, she went to Winnipeg Bible College and completed her music degree. After teaching in Surrey for a number of years she moved to Smithers to take a similar position there. It was in Smithers where she met Bill Goddard, who she eventually married. Erna and Bill were married for over 41 years. He passed away a few years back of a heart attack. Bill was a popular teacher at the high school and was also known as a very good photographer. “The kids would always say, ‘Hi, Mrs. Gobbett. You look the same as before. Mr. Gobbett was our favourite teacher,’” she said. The Gobbetts have three children and 12 grandchildren. One daughter lives in Calgary, one is dean at Caronport College (Sask), and one lives here in Grand Forks and works at GFSS. She says that half her grandchildren play “Arrival” June 7, 1967 – the piano. “Departure” “They all played in the band and sang,” Jan. 30, 2015 she added. Verigin, Anne With great sadness, the family of Anne Verigin announces her sudden passing on Feb 7, 2015 at Trail Regional Hospital. She was born May 03, 1932 to John and Tina Saliken (Holoboff) in Pass Creek, B.C. She married Michael John Verigin on July 22, 1950, in Grand Forks, B.C. at the home of his parents, John J and Anastasia Verigin (Chernoff). They lived in Grand Forks for a few years, started their family (Shirley and James), and then moved to Nelson. In 1958, they moved to Pass Creek, where their third child Elroy was born. In 1972, they returned to the Grand Forks area. Briefly, they also lived in Williams Lake and Tahsis until her husband’s injury and forced retirement. After the passing of her husband, Anne returned to Castlegar, her birthplace. She has been enjoying life while living in her cozy place with her daughter and son-in-law and great granddaughter, Tao. In her younger years, Anne worked hard, cultivating her gardens and managing a small farm. She spend winter evenings crocheting tablecloths. She also enjoyed making traditional Russian dishes and angel food cakes and was very generous in sharing them with friends and family. She was a kind person and enjoyed giving of herself and her handmade gifts to others. Her begonias, fuchsias, and other summer flowers will miss her loving touch. She is predeceased by her husband, Michael , in 1997, and by her sisters and their husbands, Grace and Sam Postnikoff of Shoreacres, Martha and Harry Chernoff of Nelson North Shore, her father John in 1958 and her mother Tina in 1996. She is survived by her sister Molly Peligren , in Nanaimo, her brother John Saliken in Cranbrook, 3 children Shirley (Philip) Stanwood in Castlegar, Jim (Martha Half ) Verigin in St Paul AB, Elroy (Valerie) Verigin in Penticton, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Anne’s children warmly invite her friends and family to join them at her memorial service on February 21. 2015 at 1:30 pm at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1680 Woodland Drive, Castlegar, B.C.

Instructor retires
dancing, crazy night.” Luke was hired by Selkirk College in 1978 to see if Grand Forks needed ABE. She was then hired on four months later to be the instructor after the program was approved. “I was hired to do the feasibility study to see if this community needed ABE,” said Luke. “I was actually the first ABE person hired here to do the feasibility study and that morphed right into the ABE program.” Luke said teaching with the ABE program was a dream job for her. “You can’t get very many jobs that are better than teaching,” she said. “The best students are the ones that want to be here. No one forces anyone to come here, unlike at the high school. Any student that’s here is here on their own steam and that makes all the difference in the world.” Luke said it was very satisfying to help adults find education paths that get them on their way towards a rewarding career. There have been many changes over the years at the college, she added. She says there used to be more older Doukhobor students, who really jumped on being able to upgrade. “We used to go for coffee at the Yale and they’d

bring apples and jams and pies and it was wonderful,” said Luke. “Somewhere in the middle (of my time at Selkirk) it became more focused about getting funding for people so they could get training for jobs.” Luke said they are dealing with more young people although they still have the older crowd that come. “They’re mostly in their 20s or late teens,” she said. “They’re going for their prerequisites; into trades; into health care aid; into community support worker. Those are our really big goals that we are helping people get into.” They also help students upgrade their transcripts so they can move on to universities. Luke said upgrading computer skills was popular a few years back but now that everyone has grown up on computers they don’t necessarily need to learn programs since they already know popular ones such as Word or Excel. “That push seems to have backed off a bit,” she said. “I just assume it’s because we have younger students (and they already know it.) They could be teaching us.” Just because she loved her job doesn’t mean Luke isn’t looking forward to retirement. She just might find herself even more busy. First up for Luke is a six-week stint house sitting in Victoria followed by a trip to Bali in April. “Apart from that I’m all about the garden,” she said. “I want to become as self-sufficient as possible. We’ve got a nice little garden space that has been created but not yet planted. When I get back I’ll be really busy planting gardens.” Luke said she also plans to put a lot of energy into the community through volunteering with the agriculture society and the learning garden at the recreation centre. “I want to help bring agriculture back in this area as a way for people to make a living and attract young people and start to put us on the map,” she said. “We have the most sunshine of any community in B.C. We’ve got the history; we’ve got the fields; we’ve got the expertise. I think all we need is initiative and focus on developing that.”
