Employees of Portofino European Bakery roll out the buns. The company moved to Central Saanich in January and has seen steady growth in its business over the last six years.

Bakery’s fortunes on the rise News staff

Portofino European Bakery is expanding to ensure it has a regular supply of locallygrown grain to keep the bread rising. The bakery, which relocated to Central Saanich in January from Esquimalt, was the third stop on the Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce’s Tour of Industry. The event introduces community leaders from the Saanich Peninsula to some of the businesses that employ hundreds of people. It’s also a chance for business owners to lobby for more services from area municipalities. Portofino’s General Manager Jaap Verbeke says his 86 employees have been settling into their new digs — a 60,000 square-foot space. It’s a vast improvement over their former location — only 9,000 square feet. Inside, Verbeke said they produce up to 8,000 products each day — loaves of bread, buns and a lot more. He said Portofino has seen its business grow steadily and in the last four years, expanded its capabilities to include a gluten-free line of baked goods. Portofino has a specific space within their site for such products, which maintains positive pressure in order to keep flour dust out, preventing cross-contamination. “We do regular testing to

Steven Heywood/News staff

Portofino General Manager Jaap Verbeke. ensure the product doesn’t get contaminated,” he said. Elsewhere in the building, Verbeke pointed out a new grain mill they are installing. It’s designed to receive local grain to be used in their baking. “Producing locally-grown products isn’t easy,” he admitted. “Many grains aren’t necessarily available in the quantities we need. “Right now, we get wheat from two local farms. But the grain gets trucked to Chilliwack for milling and is then trucked back.” So, four months ago, they purchased their own mill and silo to cut those costs and transportation issues. Being able to mill their own grain

means some of their final baked goods can be labelled 100 per cent locally-grown. With the mill, Verbeke said Portofino will soon have the capability to purchase grain from two additional farms. That, in turn, will help ensure a sustainable supply. “There’s still a lot of pressure (on farmers) to grow barley and rye and still some fields lie fallow. “There needs to be some certainty in the market — that farmers will be able to grow wheat and their grain will be purchased.” If that happens, he said, he sees demand growing even further for locally-grown wheat and other grains. Portofino has grown steadily

over the last six years, Verbeke continued — especially after getting a contract to sell to Thrifty Foods. “We’ve been growing annually between 30 and 35 per cent,” he said, noting that was one of the reasons behind their recent move. “We’ve also doubled our production of bread products.” With the move to Central Saanich, Verbeke said they’ve gained more space, but still face issues like competition from the mainland and even up-Island. Verbeke noted favourable lease rates in those areas make it more difficult to survive in southern Vancouver Island. Even so, Verbeke said Portofino is doing quite well and is even considering expanding its distribution to the lower mainland. editor@peninsulanewsreview.com • • • • The Tour continues in the Feb. 11 PNR:

NEWS REVIEW REVIEW NEWS

February 5th - 11th, 2015

Sidney is promising taxpayers more bang for their buck in its 2015 draft financial plan. This year’s Town of Sidney budget, part of their 2015-2019 financial plan, starts with a 2.52 per cent general tax increase. Andrew Hicik, Director of Corporate Services, says that’s the starting point. “It’s the best starting figure I’ve had in my time here,” he said during a Feb. 2 presentation of the draft financial plan to council. “Taxpayers will be getting more services for those tax dollars.” Most residents will not see any jump in water and sewer user fees, which Hicik said will remain at 2014 levels or, in the case of the sewer rates, drop a bit this year. On average, he continued, homeowners in Sidney will be paying $1.10 more per month in 2015 than they did last year in town-specific costs. Hicik said Town staff found savings in a variety of areas to help keep the general tax increase lower than in previous years — but noted the final rate could change depending on council decisions on the budget. As it stands now, he said, the Town needed $342,400 more in new taxes to balance the budget. While looking to maintain services established in 2014 and earlier, Hicik said the 2015 budget sees both cost increases and reductions in a variety of areas that have helped balance things out. Among the reductions: • $86,000 saved in legislative services • $7,300 in garbage collection services • $2,000 in engineering and works • $115,600 in Parks and Cultural Services Some of the budget increases in 2015 include: • $114,000 in RCMP contract costs • $61,325 for the fire department’s hiring plan • $13,000 in building inspections • $47,500 in development services • $222,000 in fiscal services. Included in fiscal services is $113,500 for supplemental requests — new funding sought from the municipality in a variety of areas and council priorities. For example, this area includes requests for increased funding from the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre and Mary Winspear Centre, as well as a jump in money to the Town’s own economic development fund. The 2015 capital budget, typically for new construction and other projects, is listed at $4.55 million — the lion’s share of $3.8 million for infrastructure replacement such as Allbay Road reconstruction worth an estimated $1.7 million. To pay for capital items, Hicik said the Town gets the money from its reserves ($3.8 million), taxes and fees ($430,000), a carry forward of $171,000 and other surplus funds. Hicik is also revisiting the controversial light industrial tax standardization plan that would bring an estimated $30,000 more into the Town’s coffers. In 2014, council decided not to implement it, following a series of lobbying efforts by local business. Hicik acknowledged this, noting that it will be up to council, ultimately, if it remains in the budget. Council meets again to discuss the draft financial plan on Feb. 16, where they will get more details on supplemental requests, capital projects and complex issues in the budget. It will be the first opportunity for the public to weigh in as well, Hicik added. “This is our chance to hear if we got it right.” Councillors meet again Feb. 24 and 25 for their final deliberations on the 2015-2019 financial plan. editor@peninsulanewsreview.com

If family is one of the main building blocks of a community, then Lego must be one of the cornerstones of building a family. At least it seems that way — Lego building blocks are a staple in nearly every child’s toy box. Downtown Sidney hopes to re-create that feeling in children and adults this long weekend, as businesses open their doors to fun. It’s the third year Sidney has been chock full of blockheads for the Family Day long weekend. The Lego theme started with an annual display at the Sidney Museum and has grown dramatically. “Last year, we estimated there were around 10,000 people in downtown Sidney over the long weekend,” says Carol Whitehouse, Sidney Family Day 2015 co-ordinator. Events, which run between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. every day, are co-ordinated through the Sidney Business

weather permitting. Whitehouse says organizers hope to top last year’s turnout. More shops and restaurants will be open and

some, like Lolly Gobble which has Lego candy, are playing along with the theme. For more details, visit distinctlysidney.ca.

Fun for all ages, Lego is the theme in Sidney’s Family Day long weekend events. Improvement Area Society (SBIAS) and Whitehouse says businesses are in on the act. The feature family event this year is a scavenger hunt. Starting Saturday, Feb. 7, children can pick up maps at the museum on Beacon Avenue and visit up to 37 shops. Whitehouse said a minimum of 20 must be visited to be eligible to enter draws for Lego sets. The hunt lasts until March 31, when the winners will be announced. Family Day Lego fun kicks off this Saturday with Town Crier Kenny Podmore.

Members of the Victoria Lego Users Group then begin work at the Sidney Pier Hotel. Next door, the Shaw Ocean Discovery Centre features underwater Lego displays and activities. And of course, the Sidney Museum is open and has more than 400 Lego models on display. Sunday sees the activities continue between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Professional Lego builder Robin Sather begins work on a sixfoot Seaspan tugboat at Seaport Place (or the Gracepoint police station) next to the

Pier Hotel. Families can enjoy building their own models at activity tables there. On Monday, Sather moves his work to the Mary Winspear Centre, as does the mosaic project that everyone can contribute to. Children are invited to take part in the Panorama Kids Zone on Monday at the Mary Winspear. Also on Monday, there is a youth and family open house at the Mary Winspear Centre in the gallery outside the Bodine Hall. New this year, says Whitehouse, the Rockfish Divers will build

Top choice faces hurdles

L

ocation, location, location. It’s the mantra of real estate agents and housing developers. It could also be the rallying cry of both sides in a growing debate over where a proposed community safety building will go within the Town of Sidney. On Monday, Feb. 2, the municipality presented a feasibility study and outlined the case for property next to Sidney Elementary School. It’s the number one choice in the study — which appears to compile a review of potential fire hall relocation sites from 2010 and other information from years earlier. Will the dated information matter much in this debate? Unlikely, as Sidney’s footprint hasn’t changed over that Do we want a time and much of the fire hall ... under town still lies beneath the flight path of the a flight path? airport’s main runway. That fact has, according to Fire Chief Brett Mikkelsen, eliminated some of the sites that are already being favoured by some residents. Do we want a fire hall, ambulance station and other first responders under a flight path? Probably not, just to be on the safe side. Other areas under consideration were eliminated as top picks for their distance from the majority of fire department emergency calls — and their volunteers. That’s left the large green space next to the school as the top pick. Yet it’s because the land is an urban green space that it will have plenty of people stacked against it. Residents should heed the words of Sidney Councillor Barbara Fallott and ensure they get all the information during the public debate. Simply not liking the fact that your street could change isn’t going to fly. Where the argument against locating the fire hall next to the school could go, is in its ultimate cost. No one is saying they have an estimate yet, but taking into account land prices and the cost of building a solid emergency services facility, it could very well be into the double digits in millions of dollars. Offsets or not, coming up with the cash for this project will be as big a battle as finding the best location. What do you think? It takes will to resolve airport noise issues Thank you for your interesting Tour of Industry article regarding 443 Squadron. You touch on the recurring topic of noise and accurately point to the fact that it will most likely increase when the squadron is re-equipped with heavier equipment. This comes at a time when most communities have endorsed their own plans for urban densification. It would seem an appropriate time to review air traffic patterns as they pertain to the concept of a reasonable expectation for peace and quiet in, over and around our community. 443 Squadron is not the only operator at the airport and they obviously take the topic seriously. Viking, various flying clubs, etc., all contribute to the acoustic mix. Judging by previous stated opinions it is easy to get tangled up in all manner of peripheral issues when approaching the topic as it may relate to the military, as there is a fair amount of pride and emotion associated with that, and rightly so. As the town and airport grow, so too does the potential for noise-related problems. The level of annoyance will probably vary dependent upon which area of town we live in. Surely considerable progress could be made immediately to help mitigate much of the disturbances by having all aircraft fly more disciplined flight paths. There is ample and relatively open water space around the Peninsula, so it is not impossible to implement: Most issues can be resolved if the will to do so exists. V. Gillett Sidney

Teachers leading the way Contrary to Tom Fletcher’s assertion (PNR Feb. 4) that B.C. teachers and the BCTF are not “adapting,” we are actually leading the way in protecting and enhancing education in our province. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation is actively involved in B.C.’s task force on assessment, the graduation requirements review, and the curriculum redesign teams. Our two vice-presidents and I have been meeting with senior Ministry of Education staff on these initiatives. As a union of professionals, we

work hard to enhance our practice in support of teaching and learning. The BCTF has 32 provincial specialist associations — ranging from science, social studies and art to technology and trades education — that put on exceptional professional development conferences, write reports and lead important teacher inquiry projects. Recently, the BCTF has partnered with UBC and the B.C. Superintendents Association to create a province-wide mentoring program that will formalize an integrated system of support for developing and retaining teachers in B.C. We also funded, created and launched a new online platform called TeachBC that enables teachers from across B.C. to share their research and teaching resources. There are a lot of excellent things happening in B.C. schools and teachers are front and centre making it all happen. However, we cannot forget that any government strategy, initiative, direction, plan, etc., needs funding. Unfortunately, we’re still waiting for this government to fund the basics like improving class size and composition. A change in government attitude toward funding is the first adaptation B.C. students need. Jim Iker BCTF President • • • •

early two dozen students at Bayside Middle School practically vibrated with energy as they gathered just outside their library to talk about their current book drive for the Peninsula Connections for Early Childhood’s (PCEC) 1000x5 children’s book recycling program. All members of the school’s Youth In Action Team, they bounced on their toes, waiting patiently for their turn to speak as they related what it has meant for them to get involved in the initiative. “It’s a really heartwarming experience, being able to give back to the community,” said Grade 7 Hailey Larose, overcoming her shyness to come to the front of the crowd. A self-professed avid reader herself, Larose is clearly excited to be a part of the literacy campaign. The 1000x5 program encourages families to read 1,000 books to their young children by age five and hands out countless bags of free books over the Saanich Peninsula to help them meet that goal. Having that much exposure to the written word and stories at such a young age is vital to developing valuable life skills as children grow older, says PCEC. And the YIA students agree. “I know what it’s like to struggle in school and not understand something,” said Rose Chisholm, a Grade 7 at Bayside. “But I also know what it’s like when you do understand something, and it feels amazing. To help other kids get that feeling too, I feel so honoured to be able to do that.” Rose and three other Grade 7 students were invited recently to see how PCEC sorts the books that get donated, and had the chance to meet the people who put in the hours. “The women there were just generally nice people,” said Gabby Gladych. “Most were retired teachers, and so they know what kids like to read. She took the original YIA team over to the first WE Day Vancouver where they were able to listen to life-changing talks by the Dalai Lama, Jane Goodall and others. “They were so inspired,” says White. “This one boy spoke who had been a child slave in Africa and had escaped. There were 16,000 people in the arena, and you could have heard a pin drop.” Bayside’s YIA students have since raised money to help Free the Children build school rooms in Sierra Leone, Haiti and Kenya, as well as supporting the 1000x5 literary program. The YIA team gets kids from different grades and social cir-

cles mixing, and making friends where they might not have otherwise, adds White. “I’ve actually heard them saying to each other, ‘I never would have met you if I hadn’t joined Youth In Action.’ They’re all different, but they’re all tied together with the same drive to help and make a difference.” Students become passionately committed to the cause, White says. “There have been times that they’ve come up to me with an issue they’ve just learned about, and want to do something about it.” Case in point, last fall a handful of Grade 8 students became aware of the ebola crisis and spearheaded a coin drive that raised $550, which translated into $1,100 when the funds were matched by HBC through the Red Cross. Locally, the team has been supporting the 1000x5 literacy program for four years and has collected thousands of books for families on the Peninsula. The YIA team is collecting gently used books at the school, 1101 Newton Place in Brentwood Bay, until spring break. Old school to get new doors Angela Cowan

The West Saanich School Heritage Schoolhouse will soon be getting a new set of doors to improve accessibility to the building. cost $8,000 for the retrofit of the new door, framework, hardware and lock. Watkins said the Society does not have the funds available after contributing $9,000 to build the accessibility ramp that was installed at the west side of the building last year. The doors, which sit at the top of the accessibility ramp, are not wide enough to meet accessibility standards. Currently, Watkins said anyone who is mobility challenged

has to wait for other people to enter the building through the main entrance, and then open the west doors from the inside. Council approved the application, with the caveat that the Brentwood Bay Old School Hall Society also explore opportunities for funding through community partners or grants to potentially lessen the cost to the District. reporter@peninsula newsreview.com

Good hearing, poor comprehension? hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newlydeveloped hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear.

A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the highfrequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not

and speech comprehension analysis is done. Where inner-ear damage is present, a software program analyzes the difference relative to normal hearing. These values are then input into the new Venture hearing chip in the Audéo V, which precisely takes into account and balances the frequency range of the person being tested. The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.

Stelly’s Secondary School presents the musical Band Geeks, the story of the nearly broke Cuyahoga High Marching Beavers. When a troubled athlete is relegated to their ranks, Elliott, the tuba-playing band captain and Laura, his best friend, must find a way to unite the band. Shows run Feb. 10 to 13 at 7:30 p.m. at Stelly’s. Tickets available at the school.

Town favours elementary school site Continued from page 1

Other areas were ruled out, Mikkelsen continued, as they fell beneath the Victoria International Airport’s main runway approach, something the Chief called inappropriate. Two sites across the Pat Bay Highway were also ruled out due to the highway’s impact on emergency response time. “Eighty-two per cent of our calls are on the east side of the highway and seventy per cent of our volunteers live on the east side.” Those site studies were done in 2010, Mikkelsen pointed out. Price said he plans to do his research on the impact of emergency services buildings near children and schools. “For me, it’s zero tolerance there for any added risk.” Friend admitted his future work with the school could be at risk. He said he hopes councillors are open to having their minds changed. The cost of the proposed new building has not yet been estimated, said Andrew Hicik, the

Town’s Director of Corporate Services. He said that would not happen until more detailed plans were drawn up, the land deal negotiated and the project itself approved. Renovating the existing fire hall, said Mikkelsen, was ruled out following a 2009 estimate, as it would cost around $2.2 million. “That didn’t address all of the deficiencies,” he explained, noting the current hall is not up to modern standards for disaster survival. The proposed new facility is three stories tall and includes: a fourbay fire hall; three-bay ambulance station; room for local emergency services programs, and; a training area appropriate to Sidney’s needs. Architects Bradley Shuya and Ron Crawford outlined their design stemming from a feasibility study started in May 2014. That study was presented to council last fall and was made public Monday night. It can be found at the Town’s website, sidney.ca. The pair stated they had taken noise

and traffic issues into consideration in the design. As well, they indicate the entire property could benefit from the construction of a replacement school as well. Councillors asked about training needs and the sharing of space with Central and North Saanich departments. Mikkelsen said Sidney works with their neighbours but has specific needs that are not addressed. Mayor Steve Price asked if the current site was too small to accommodate a growing department. Mikkelsen confirmed that, adding

of all the options on the table, the Sidney Elementary land was still the best. Councillor Barbara Fallott noted the full house at the meeting, saying she was glad to see so many people. “For or against,” she said, “make your arguments from an informed position.” A new emergency services building is far from a done deal. Council said negotiations with the school district will continue and they plan on having public input on the proposal as progress is made. editor@peninsula newsreview.com

While official fuel economy numbers were not available, Jeep is expecting a combined fuel rating of about 8.1 L/100km, which would be excellent. The 4x4 versions of Renegade also feature a unique disconnecting rear axle feature that should provide fuel economy numbers that are close to the 4x2 versions. Tek-Tonic is what Jeep designers dubbed the Renegade’s funky yet functional interior. The Wrangler theme is also evident inside and includes the requisite passenger grab handle. A minor tall-roof drawback was noted, however, when I tried to reach for a distant sun visor above the upright windshield. Jeep claims Renegade has up to 70 standard and available safety and security features. There are seven standard air bags, including a driver’s knee air bag. On top of that you can layer an impressive list of optional active safety features that includes Forward Collision Warning with Active Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Blind-spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Path detection, ParkView and a Rear Backup Camera. The all-new 2015 Jeep Renegade is in a word…how you say…Stupendo!

Drive like that all day and the gas engine will be firing up in no time but the power is there if you need it. Drive sensibly and to the prevailing weather conditions and you will get close to the advertised range. Sticking to the sluggish EcoPro and EcoPro+ modes will add 20 and 40 km to the range. Nah. But it’s not just about operator proficiency: The carbon-fibre body is light and regenerative braking constantly tops up the cells. Using a regular domestic power point, I was able to recharge the i3 overnight and if you install a fast charger, you can be back on the road in three hours.

ly-charged battery. Based on my Dutch experience and a few days buzzing around the Fraser Valley, the top end is a shade optimistic, especially in poor weather when one tends to crank up the heat. Mind you, with a starting price just short of $45,000 the $4,000 generator pushes that already substantial cost up significantly. The nine-litre gas tank that feeds the tiny engine boosts the range to around 300 kilometres. What is indisputable is just how much fun this car is to drive. In town, the BMWi3 is the perfect shopping cart, extremely manoeuvrable and the fastest parker in town! The lithium-ion battery, housed in an aluminum cage below the five-seater cabin, enables the electric motor to mimic a race car at the green and back into a tight spot equally quickly! It is suggested that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery though it’s doubtful that belief is enthusiastically shared by folks in the fiercely competitive auto business. In Detroit recently, my head spun when I clapped eyes on Chevy’s all-electric Bolt, even its rusty colour was similar to the i3 I drove at the launch in Amsterdam in 2013. As I remarked at that time, the compact eco-Bimmer has a funky look and its one that’s gaining traction especially among the younger generation. My head spun again the other week when I picked up a production version to test in local conditions from Brian Jessel BMW in Vancouver. It was identical to the Dutch example! Well, not quite. It did have an additional feature not present in the launch model. It had a range extender, which is marketing-speak for a two-cylinder, 647cc gas engine. It doesn’t drive the wheels but kicks in as an electricity generator designed to top up the battery when it runs low. It’s a must addition for Canada unless your daily trek clocks up no more than the promised 130-160 kilometres range when setting out with a ful-

Renowned Canadian poets Lorna Crozier and Patrick Lane, together for nearly 40 years, say they’ve been writing love poems all their lives. The pair will be reading at the now sold out Red Brick Reading series next Friday to help the Sidney Peninsula Literary Festival this fall.

Poetry reminds us what it is to be human: Crozier Angela Cowan News Staff

S

pend an hour in the company of award-winning poets Lorna Crozier and Patrick Lane, and one starts to see the world a little differently. The throaty burbling of a delicate fountain suddenly seems like the only sound that matters in an overcast garden. An older couples’ laughter is haloed in light as they walk down the street holding hands. Poetry is the art of sinking into the tiny moments and not only finding the infinitesimal ecstasies within, but translating them into language. Spend an hour with two masters of their craft and that observation, that deft handling of words, becomes something nearly tangible that begs to be stolen away from the poets’ living room and taken out into the world before it dissipates. Crozier and Lane are arguably two of Canada’s most talented poets and they’ve had as much of an impact on each other as they have on their legions of students and colleagues. “Lorna inhabits all of my poetry,” says Lane. He sits, feet up, in the living room of their North Saanich home, looking over at his partner of nearly 40 years. “She remains in disguise inside dozens of poems.” “Oh, that’s quite good,” Crozier says, smiling. “I love that, ‘remains in disguise inside dozens of poems.’” Their affection and a subtle,

lightning-quick sense of humour is palpable between them and it’s not unusual for the lines between their professional lives and their relationship to blur. Often, one will catch a particularly poetic phrase in the other’s offhand remarks, usually resulting in a new poem. Mere days earlier, Crozier had remarked, looking at their noble cat, “Basho has the blue eyes of a terrible angel.” Lane’s immediate response was “Write that down!” As they continue to muse, it’s clear a lifetime of considered words has imbued their very way of speaking; there are no ‘um’ moments. Instead, Crozier and Lane both pause periodically, selecting just the right phrases to describe their writing processes, their relationship, their shared love of poetry. That attention to detail is undoubtedly part of what makes them successful readers as well. “I never feel better than when I’m reading my poetry out loud,” says Lane. “A poem on the page is a musical score for the voice.” It’s intriguing to note that while Lane has never felt nervous performing in front of a crowd, Crozier — even with a background in acting — always gets a little jittery. “I can get very nervous,” she says. “I start thinking, they’re all going to hate me, or I’m going to offend everyone in the room. Or that they’ll start to think, who is she to be up there?” That last sentiment is a beacon of hope to every aspiring writer out there. If a poet who has authored

15 books, received numerous awards, been appointed a member of the Order of Canada, and even read for the Queen herself can have those doubting voices in the back of her head, then perhaps it’s time to ignore them and just keep writing. Above all, one gets the impression that Lane and Crozier get just as much out of the process of birthing poems as their readers do from absorbing them. “Good poetry makes you feel less alone, because it always reminds you what it is to be human,” says Crozier. Lane looks over at his partner, nodding. “It provides a bridge between people,” he says. And perhaps it’s that bridge of shared beauty, of their ability to look out over the world side by side and face it in all its glory and tragedy, that has not only made these two such lauded poets, but also an enchanting couple. Next up, Crozier and Lane are both reading at the sold-out Red Brick Reading series as a fundraiser for the Sidney and Peninsula Literary Festival this fall. Crozier has two books being released this year: The Wrong Cat, and The Wild in You: Voices from the Forest and the Sea, a collaboration with world-renowned photographer Ian McAllister. Lane’s most recently published poetry collection Washita was launched in November 2014. For more information, visit lornacrozier.ca or patricklane. ca.

Victoria, Sidney and parts of Nanaimo form the backdrop for a new zombie-killing game that one might say is being made in bad taste. Actually, the game is called Bad Taste, and is under development by Cancer Cinema’s Celx (pronounced CeeLix) Requin of Sidney. A web designer, digital comics artist and game developer, Requin has partnered with Winnipeg designer Jeremy Zaczek, Victoria programer Mike Heavenor and Spencer Rice of the television comedy show Kenny vs. Spenny. “Spenny was a fan of my comics,” says Requin. “We traded notes and got in touch and when I started (Bad Taste) he became a partner.” Now, Spenny provides the voice of the main character in a 2D side-scrolling platform shooter. As a bonus, Requin says he was able to get the Finnish band Lodger to agree to providing their music for the game soundtrack. Bad Taste, Requin says, is a send-up of the fast food industry — without getting overtly political. Designed for mature audiences, Bad Taste features repulsive zombie enemies and mutated foodstuffs trying to prevent Chet (the main character) from escaping Victoria before a bomb goes off. There are in-game voice cameos by Kenneth Hotz (Kenny vs. Spenny) and Lloyd Kaufman (Toxic Avenger, Poultrygeist). Requin, in his early

designs for the game, incorporated some of Victoria’s famous — and perhaps even infamous — landmarks into the background. Players can see some of Chinatown, Fan Tan Alley and even the Fox nightclub, animated and drawn by Zaczek. There are, he adds, some of Nanaimo and Sidney — all places where he has lived — in the game as well. “I work on the mechanics of the game,” says Requin. “You need to show your programmer how the game is going to work.” He also draws all of the original artwork,

which he passes on to his artist to incorporate into the game. Flow-through maps and the story line are all developed from Requin’s home base and brought together with his partners. It’s Requin’s first video game and he says he has spent the better part of two years working on it. Having Rice and the support of both Kenny and Spenny is, Requin says, the cherry on top when it comes to developing and promoting Bad Taste. The game is, Requin

says, satirical in nature and “good Canadian content.” He says he chose Victoria as the main locale for Bad Taste because “it’s what I know.” As the game nears completion, Requin says he is seeking publicity through online gaming venues like Steam Greenlight. It’s a bit like raising your voice in a crowded room, he notes, with a lot of competition for gamers’ time out there. That’s where he says the Kenny vs. Spenny partnership will help his effort. If Bad Taste proves successful, Requin says he’d like to create more games and even turn it into a full-time gig. “It’s been about oneand-a-half years on this one, and that’s working every day on it, nonstop.” To see a preview of Bad Taste, go to cancercinema.com/badtaste or check out twitter. com/cancercinema. editor@peninsula newsreview.com

Seniors rinks off to the provincials NORTH SAANICH — Curling at the Glen Meadows competitive level has set a new bar in the winning circles. The Pacific Coast Masters Curling Association held its annual South Vancouver Island Zone Playdown Jan. 16 to 18 in both the Men’s 60-plus and 70-plus categories. This coveted event allows all clubs to send their top teams to compete for a single berth to the provincials in the spring. This year both categories were won by Glen Meadows teams. Sixty-plus champions Jack Campbell, Dan Eakins, Ken Wigbers, Bob Powell and Dave Bolster are off to the provincials March 30 to April 2 in Richmond. Seventy-plus cham-

After winning a silver medal with the Canadian Under 18 national women’s hockey team in Buffalo late last year, Micah Hart is once again donning the ‘C’. This time, the Saanichton hockey player holds the captaincy of Team B.C. — the host team at the Canada Winter Games in Prince George this month. On Feb. 13, Hart will also carry the provincial flag into the Games’ opening ceremonies, representing all of B.C.’s athletes. “It was amazing to be chosen,” she said. “It’s a huge honour.” This isn’t Hart’s first time with Team B.C. The talented defenceman has been playing with the squad since last May and many of her teammates have played alongside her with other high-level teams — including the national U18 squad. That team won silver at the 2015 IIHF World Championships. “We played some exhibition games in September versus Saskatchewan and Manitoba. We won two games and lost two against some really strong teams.” Hart said B.C.’s goal is, of course, to win the gold medal and said they’ll take it one game at a time. Their first match is against Quebec, she said. They’ll play a series of round robin games and hopefully reach the playoffs. Hart added being the captain

She held the ‘C’ with Canada’s U18 team as well and noted once the players hit the ice, her focus is on helping the team win games. She said her sister lives in Prince George and is expecting her family to be in the interior city to watch her play. “I think it will be an amazing atmosphere at the Opening Ceremony in Prince George and an unforgettable experience leading Team B.C.” editor@peninsulanewsreview.com

f you have ever purchased or sold a home, you’ve probably met a notary public. They’re the folks who hold all the legal documents for you to sign at the end of the process. But, as two notaries public from Sidney’s Salvador Davis & Co. explain, there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes than you might think. Lisa Ehrlich, a partner in Salvador Davis & Co with Laurie Salvador, and Shawna Farmer say from start to finish of a single home sale, the work can last up to three months. “It’s not as simple as some people might think it is,” says Farmer. “We collect mortgage documents and information on behalf of real estate agents, lenders, mortgage companies and our clients.” Notaries, adds Ehrlich, often are the ones who discover builders’ liens against properties, outstanding taxes, covenants and other surprises that a purchaser might not be aware of. In Sidney, Ehrlich says, many seniors have taken advantage of property tax deferrals — and they might not remember how much money is owing to the municipality. That could also come as a surprise to a purchaser, who might be on the hook for those added costs. Other issues, like rightsof-way, mineral rights and building schemes can be present on a property title. It’s these things, says Farmer,

Steven Heywood/News staff

Salvador Davis & Co notaries public Lisa Ehrlich, left, and Shawna Farmer. There’s more to a simple signing of documents for your real estate deal, they say. Notaries spend hours behind the scenes. that notaries gather up and ensure that their clients know about before they finalize a purchase. It’s also part of their job in the process of buying or selling a house to ensure the titles are clear of such encumbrances. A typical home buyingor-selling process starts, for notaries, with meeting a client, asking if they have specific needs and then gathering up all of the legal doc-

uments. Ehrlich says the next step involves the real estate agent, lender or broker in order to get the title free and clear of any issues. It’s throughout this process that all disclosures must take place — again, so there are no surprises. Closing day, “is a big day,” says Ehrlich. It means buyers are transferring over a lot of money and sellers are receiving it. For many people, she says, it can be the biggest

transaction of their lives. At this stage, or even earlier, adds Farmer, they like to ask their clients about how they want to hold title. For couples buying a home, it can be done in two ways: as joint tenants where both own right of survivorship, or; as tenants in common where both parties own a share of the property and upon the death of one, the wishing of their will would be followed. It’s complex, says Ehrlich,

and part of life planning. To make sure it goes smoothly, Farmer and Ehrlich say people need to trust their notary. In the case of Salvador Davis & Co, they say they get most of their business via referrals. That speaks loudly to their reputation in the community. “It’s what we do,” says Farmer. editor@peninsula newsreview.com

Youth dental care society hopes to open soon Sidney’s ORCCA lifted up by community support

Little league clubhouse to get a new roof Angela Cowan News Staff

A new organization established to reach children and adolescents in need of basic dental care says it’s close to opening up next to Sidney Elementary School. Oral Care for Children and Adolescents, or ORCCA, was founded by Dr. Mitra Hashemi, a Sidney dentist who saw that there were families who just couldn’t afford dental care for their children under 19. In the last two years, ORCCA has received community support to help get the non-profit organization off the ground, including the donation of an annex building at Sidney Elementary School on Henry Avenue. Heather Burkett, the ORCCA board chairperson, says a phone system was installed this week and Dr. Hashemi is in the process of moving some

Burkett said Dr. Hashemi has already begun seeing children in need at her practice while waiting for the annex building to be opened. That space will facilitate local dentists willing to give their time to help reach adolescents with basic dental care. Burkett said the support of the community has been

tremendous — case-inpoint being a $5,000 donation from the Pier Hotel this week. The Pier Hotel held a Mardi Gras event — transforming their large spaces into the French Quarter, complete with music, tarot card readings and decorations. General Manager Natalie King said virtually the entire hotel team got involved to make it happen.

King said they chose to help ORCCA because of its work with children in need and after 200-plus people showed up for the fun, they had raised the $5,000. “Anything that helps kids tends to tug at the heartstrings,” she said. “It’s nice to be able to support an organization that provides an essential service. Many of us simply take dental care for granted.” Burkett said the board

is very pleased with the donation, noting it helps get the clinic space ready to officially open — which she said will occur in about two weeks. Already, she added, there’s a waiting list of people who require the basic dental care being offered. To find out more, visit orccadental.ca or call 778351-3393. editor@peninsula newsreview.com

Central Saanich Little League is hoping to fix their leaky roofs before their season kicks off in April. The roofs on the baseball clubhouse and four storage sheds within the park are starting to show their age, and in some cases beginning to leak, said Morley Wittman, president of the league. Wittman approached Central Saanich council on Monday to ask that the buildings each have their shingles, tar paper and any damaged sheathing replaced prior to the start of the baseball season April 7. The league has already obtained three independent quotes for the replacement of just the clubhouse roof, ranging from $2,400 to $2,680. The entire project would likely be near $6,000, said Wittman. Council approved the request for funding, but asked that Wittman and the Little League also look for funding elsewhere to mitigate the cost to the District. reporter@peninsula newsreview.com
