Oak Bay Coun. Kevin Murdoch believes strongly in the philosophy that access to information should be open to all. “As a family we use it a lot. I grew up reading all the time, still do,” he said. “There are a few aspects of our community that we could offer equal and open access. Information, digital or in print, I firmly believe falls in that category.” That philosophy should bode well with the his new role as chair of the board that governs the Greater Victoria Public Library. Saanich citizen representative Anne Kirkaldy was elected vice-chair. Murdoch served previously as the vicechair of the planning committee and vice-chair of the board. “I’m right now going through and making an effort to meet all the members of the board,” he said. “It’s a very good board, my experience has been that people come very prepared for meetings, they’re very involved and they care about the library overall – regionally. “We can leverage that to do a good job. It’s a lot of work to get an understanding of what people want, what their vision is of the library. That will be the first task,

getting to know what people want from the more than 300,000 residents served in Oak Bay, Central Saanich, Colwood, Esquimalt, Highlands, Langford, Metchosin, Saanich, Victoria and View Royal. It could be a year of “fairly involved” reaching out to stakeholder groups as the board develops a strategic plan surrounding already proposed initiatives and funding those plans and services. “That’s going to be our big goal this year,” Murdoch said. “If we do it right, and I plan to do it right, then it’s got to be fairly exhaustive to make sure we are considering all the options.” He said many people don’t realize the scope of things the library provides and the services that have been added over the years, from a seed library or family passes to the provincial museum or Victoria’s art gallery and massive electronic media additions to the collections. “There’s a lot of stuff going on and it’s interesting. We’ve added a huge amount of programming in the last two or three years. There’s been a net neutral cost to that,” he said. “I have to give a lot of credit to the staff who do an amazing job of finding ways to work – within the staffing and structures – to get things done. A former CBC Radio host is stepping on to the other side of the political spotlight. Jo-Ann Roberts, former host of CBC Radio One’s All Points West, was confirmed on the weekend as the Green Party candidate for Victoria for the 2015 federal election. The party’s Victoria electoral district association executive voted unanimously in support of Roberts, the lone applicant for the candidacy. “I am excited and honoured for this opportunity to work for my community alongside Elizabeth May to restore Canadian democracy,” Roberts said. “As a Green MP, I can represent people above party. Heart attack survivor aims to arm women with education Christine van Reeuwyk News Staff

Carolyn Thomas wants women to take the adage “Do as I say not as a do” to heart. A heart attack survivor herself, Thomas leads a lecture, where she shares her experience and knowledge gained from the Women Heart Science and Leadership Symposium at the Mayo Clinic. In 2008 Thomas had “Hollywood heart attack” symptoms: chest pain, left arm pain, sweats. Her first thought was “I’d better not be having a heart attack. I don’t have time for that.” It’s not an uncommon response, particularly for women, she said, noting more women than men die of heart disease each year. Heart disease kills six times more women annually than breast cancer does. It kills more women every year than all forms of cancer combined. Part of the reason is the “treatment seeking delay behaviour” inherent in women, she said. “Women will put off seeking help,” Thomas said. “Women still think of heart disease as a man’s problem. I certainly did. I pictured an old fat man on a golf course clutching his chest.” She went to the ER and was sent home diagnosed with acid reflux. She felt embarrassed, but two weeks later was readmitted and a cardiologist confirmed a heart attack. It led her on the path of getting informed on her own health and teaching others to do

While Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen reiterates “health and safety” concerns over deer overpopulation in the community, the B.C. SPCA reiterated its concerns over the cull project with a public letter. The B.C. SPCA sought a meeting between the society’s cruelty investigations department and the cull contractor to review conditions of the permit, request access to game camera footage and to outline the SPCA’s duty if legitimate cruelty complaints are

received in conjunction with the cull. The B.C. SPCA originally voiced its concerns about a deer cull in Oak Bay in June 2013. The society says the pilot project is based on a flawed Capital Regional District urban deer management process, including a lack of community consultation and an unscientific count of transient deer in the area. The society’s newest concerns relate to the request for proposals issued Dec. 5, 2014, which outlines various protocols and contingency scenarios for the cull contractor. “We at Oak Bay are not wildlife

specialists, we have relied on the province and their expertise,” said Jensen. “We have been told the method we’re using is the most humane method of controlling overpopulation.” In a response through a public affairs officer, Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations told the Oak Bay News the province’s involvement in urban deer management is to review and, if deemed appropriate, issue a permit to communities wishing to reduce their urban deer population. The Oak Bay project was issued a permit by the province

and the prescribed methods of culling the deer – which Jensen and the ministry note are the same as have been used in a number of communities in the Kootenays – have been deemed humane by the provincial wildlife veterinarian. In 2012, a special provincial constable for the B.C. SPCA attended a similar cull in Kimberley. The constable concluded the deer cull was conducted in a professional and proper manner, the ministry said. “We are using the same method as approved by the province there, that’s why I’m quite confused about the B.C.

He added that the SPCA representatives at a deer management workshop on the Mainland in mid-January showed no concern over the project’s outline in the Kootenays or “suggest they were against, in principle, a cull.” The gravest concern, the B.C. Deer cull creates a community divided It is immediately clear to anyone listening to conversations in local coffee shops or glancing at the letters to the editor in the local paper that Oak Bay has become a community divided. The decision by the District of Oak Bay to cull up to 25 deer within the municipality’s boundaries has Painting each resulted in divisions that threaten the side as villains community far more will result in than a few damaged lingering damage gardens and potential hazards on neighbourhood roads. The deer cull has opened deep divisions in the community, sometimes within families and between neighbours and co-workers. And perhaps the most damaging aspect of the dispute has been the apparent need to demonize the opposition. Cull opponents have been painted as bleeding hearts, unwilling or unable to see the problems the swelling deer population poses to the community. Meanwhile, those in favour of the cull (with Oak Bay’s mayor bearing the brunt of the attacks) are seen as some modernday lynch mob whose only justification for the cull is to satisfy their own blood lust. Even the provincial SPCA has waded into the dispute. The SPCA has issued a warning to the district that if it is found that a deer dies from bleeding out while in one of the traps the organization plans to launch a cruelty investigation. It is asking witnesses to document any signs of distress shown by animals inside the traps. While certainly good intentioned, it’s hard to envision the SPCA’s stance helping to resolve the dispute. Those in support of the cull have become increasingly defensive, to the point where a growing cloud of secrecy seems to be enveloping the issue. There are legitimate reasons for either position on the deer cull debate, but portraying the opposition as either misinformed or bloodthirsty killers is hardly conducive to reaching an amicable resolution. Hopefully, the anger and resentment brought on by this controversy won’t linger on long after the traps have been packed away. An appeal for district to reconsider deer cull This is an appeal to our mayor, Nils Jensen, (who I voted for) to please reconsider the deer cull. There has to be a more humane approach to this matter. Does he really want to be known around the world (he has been on Facebook for several weeks) as someone who went ahead without trying to take into consideration a better way. The children of Oak Bay and surrounding areas are asking their parents and grandparents, “Is the mayor going to kill the deer?” or “Why does he hate the deer?” We, as adults, are powerless to answer this question because we don’t understand ourselves. If he goes ahead with his current plan that is how he will be portrayed and remembered for years to come. Nils Jensen is the one who has the power to change this into something good. Time to move on All right already. Enough letters about the deer. However, in reading Mr Farnsworth’s letter I was so outraged here’s another letter. Apologies. But his innuendo of intimidation to the mayor cannot be countenanced. I grew up in Victoria over six decades ago and there were no deer roaming the streets. Ms. Greene’s (losing mayoralty candidate) continued efforts on pushing the

pause button on the deer cull is really quite pathetic. I opposed the Clive apartment development but it was approved and I hope it is a positive improvement for our village. For you scientists out there, culling 25 deer will mean 25 less deer, and if you think that won’t make any difference you have proved by your own words there are too many deer. Cull leaves lasting image On the evening news the mayor of Oak Bay continued to push his cull. At the same time they showed a video of a deer being killed in the trap. The poor deer was fighting the trapper, who kept trying to throw him down before putting a shot bolt in its head. The video was shocking and anybody who can claim this is a humane technique is not human. It is downright violent and cruel. I hope many viewers saw it and were as disgusted as was I, not to mention the feelings of my young daughter who is still crying. A disgusting shame. A.R. Remington Oak Bay

they asked what is it that you are doing in creature-friendly Victoria. (To them, we are all Victoria from Sidney to Sooke). I was hard pressed for an answer. Frankly I am more worried about the overzealous golfer when I travel along Beach Drive (got the dents to prove it). What will be next, seagulls who let go on us from up above, crows and robins that wake us before we want to, or those black and white bandits who raid our garbage cans, and what about those bushy things who insist to move in to our attic? They all can be a nuisance, even a threat, or they can be fellow beings that have as much right to be as we do. Full-time mayor needed Apparently the Oak Bay mayor was absent on CRD business and his delegated representative was ailing and could not attend an important council meeting regarding development on Victoria Avenue. This could lead one to question whether the mayor has the best interests of Oak Bay at heart. It makes me feel we should have perhaps elected his opponent, who wanted to be a full-time mayor. The unveiling of the new feature will take place during the Family Day Swim on Monday at 3 p.m. “Climbing on the new wall will build confidence as it conquers fears, develops co-ordination and provides an opportunity to play which is an essential part of childhood,” said Jim Force, president of

A bolt gun “misfire” leading to letting a deer bleed to death is unlikely, according to the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations. According to the province, the B.C. SPCA did a ride-along in 2012 in the Kootenays where only one mule deer, a large buck, required a second bolt and was killed instantly. “A single application of the bolt gun to the head is overwhelmingly likely to render the animal instantly brain dead. In rare circumstances (i.e. very large deer, which are not found on Vancouver Island), a second bolt has occasionally been required. The throat is only slit after the deer is dead to “bleed

Gallery launches new year with High Five Red Art Gallery reopened its doors this week to launch its fifth year with the aptly titled High Five show. The high five is a hand gesture where two people simultaneously raise one hand each and slide or slap the flat of their palm against the flat of the other person’s palm generally as a greeting or celebration. Red Art Gallery is certainly celebrating its relationship with the number five. Many of the gallery artists have created works around the theme of “5”, including small paintings, wall sculptures and even an homage to French magazine Charlie Hebdo. Red Art Gallery has a new “theme” each month for shows, with new artwork centred around the theme, along with the extensive range of works always available. Early morning shooting is commonplace for 15-year-old Sophie de Goede. She can be found three days a week in the gym at Oak Bay High following a program designed to improve her basketball skills. She downloads them from the web then spends 60 to 90 minutes those mornings working on the routines. “I find it really helpful to have a program so you’re not aimlessly shooting around and not improving,” de Goede said. It is suggested that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery though it’s doubtful that belief is enthusiastically shared by folks in the fiercely competitive auto business. In Detroit recently, my head spun when I clapped eyes on Chevy’s all-electric Bolt, even its rusty colour was similar to the i3 I drove at the launch in Amsterdam in 2013. As I remarked at that time, the compact eco-Bimmer has a funky look and its one that’s gaining traction especially among the younger generation. My head spun again the other week when I picked up a production version to test in local conditions from Brian Jessel BMW in Vancouver. It was identical to the Dutch example! Well, not quite. It did have an additional feature not present in the launch model. It had a range extender, which is marketing-speak for a two-cylinder, 647cc gas engine. It doesn’t drive the wheels but kicks in as an electricity generator designed to top up the battery when it runs low. It’s a must addition for Canada unless your daily trek clocks up no more than the promised 130-160 kilometres range when setting out with a ful-

The Luchies family – Tyler, Jennifer, Eric, 12, Owen, 10, and Beth, 8 – are busy volunteers. For most community-based organizations, it’s the volunteers that keep them running. Luckily for local sports organizations like Carnarvon Baseball Park, they have members like the Luchies family. Not only do mom Jennifer and dad Tyler volunteer as coaches on the field, but Jennifer also sits on the regional baseball board, the Greater Victoria Baseball Association. The kids are following their lead in giving back to the sport. Son Eric, 12 and in his last year of peewee, also has two years of umpiring

under his belt. Owen, 10 and in his last year of Mosquito, began umpiring last year. Daughter Beth, 8 and in her last year of Tadpole, has also volunteered as “team cheerleader” for her brothers. “Beth is the boys’ biggest fan,” Jennifer says. “She travels with their teams in the summer, scorekeeps their games, helps me set-up for practices and warm-ups and helps me organise events. As the youngest, without her support we couldn’t all be involved to the level that we are.”

NEED SUPPORT TOO Looking for ways to support your teen or pre-teen’s learning? The BC Ministry of Education offers the following tips:

• Set up a daily routine for homework completion and help children prioritize tasks. • Keep an assignment calendar in a central place for quick reference of due dates, exams and how they fit with other activities. • Create a space where children can concentrate and complete assignments away from distractions like television, the Internet and game consoles. Make sure you provide adequate lighting and supplies. • Ensure homework is put in a backpack or notebook as soon as it’s completed. • Provide guidance on safe and effective use of the Internet and set age-appropriate filters. • Let children read age-appropriate comic books and a variety of novels. • Offer help and answer questions, but do not complete children’s homework for them. • Encourage your teens to review class notes each night and

While children might spend much of their learning time at school, there’s a lot families can do at home – or out in the community – to support that learning. And it all begins with a good book. “I think the most important thing parents can be doing at home is encouraging their children to read every night,” says Lisa Kinshella, a Grade 3 teacher at Cordova Bay Elementary who also teaches the Reading Recovery program with Grade 1 students. Kinshella suggests parents listen to the child read aloud from a book at his or her reading level for 10 to 15 minutes every day. After the child reads, the parent should also read aloud to the child for 10 to 15 minutes, choosing a book that is above the child’s reading level, but of high interest for them. “Both books can be discussed by talking about the story elements – main idea, plot, characters, problem and solution to the story, etc.,” Kinshella suggests. If students have time, they can also try a book journal,

recording the title and author of each book, writing chapter summaries or story summaries after the book is finished. “Written entries could also be made interesting by adding sketches or quick drawings about the book,” she suggests. Organization of both their time and workspace can help make homework easier for everyone. “If the student is assigned specific homework activities to do every week, then setting up a routine for completing these assignments is important,” Kinshella notes. “If possible, the child should try and complete these assignments right after school or as dinner is being prepared or right after dinner. The routine will depend on whether the child attends afterschool care or comes home after school, or does extracurricular activities.” If students have no homework assignments to complete, try spending time on basic facts, which may vary according to the grade, and some basic math computation. “Cribbage, card games or math games are fun too,” Kinshella says, noting that lots of materials are available on-line or at the Teacher Store to support the math concepts taught

For busy families, vacations together can provide invaluable “down-time” together...with the right planning. That’s not to say a “seat-of-your pants” adventure can’t be fun – one of my boys’ favourite vacations was a recent West Coast road trip where the only hotel we booked ahead was in the notoriously busy San Francisco. Sure, there were one hairy moment as we tried to book in for the night, but that was part of the adventure. And the less-than-four-star motel we landed at in Northern California? One of the most memorable parts of the trip! They key is to know yourself and your family. How much planning – or lack of planning – are you comfortable with? The age of your kids, their interests and temperaments also play a role, just as they do in choosing where to vacation. “My favourite part of our last road trip (across Southern BC then back through Northern Washington State) was just that fact we were all together in a small space talking and spending uninterrupted time together,” says Saanich mom Heather Sigwin, who with husband Tom enjoys travelling with sons Blake, 17, and twins Joey and Dennis, 15. Whether travelling by road, rail or air, something to pass the time for

The family that creates together... Matt and Hilary Potosnak share a love of the arts that was important to impart to their children, Ellie, 8, and Otto, 6. Matt, from New Jersey, and Hilary met while she was studying art in Venice, Italy in 1999. Moving to New York City, “my love affair with art continued,” Hilary says. “We lived close to some of the best museums and galleries in the world and it was such a treat to go and look at art. A firm believer in instilling in their children an appreciation of art, and in the educational importance of art, in addition to subjects like math, science and technology, “I also believe in accessibility to the arts and that is what led me to volunteer at

The family moved to Saanich last year from Budapest, and after taking a tour of the gallery, “I was excited to help do tours myself,” says Hilary, who says she loves the enthusiasm of school-aged children, who enjoy art without fear and intimidation. The Potosnaks especially enjoy the gallery’s monthly Family Sunday events. “They are such fun! The volunteers are engaging and energetic and they always have lots of things for the kids to do. I know they always try to have the activities reflect current shows and this is a great way for kids to understand an exhibit on another level.”

The family that plays together... For Victoria’s Strandlund family, baseball truly is in their blood. Parents Paddy and Sue, celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary this July, actually met on a ball field in Duncan. “I was coaching a slo-pitch team in a tournament and we needed an extra player,” Paddy recalls. “A friend introduced us and we’ve been playing or watching ball every summer since!” Son Jordan, now 17, began playing t-ball at Esquimalt Little League where Paddy coached him until he was 11. As Jordan moved on to high-performance baseball, Paddy began coaching daughter Jessica, also playing baseball at Esquimalt at the time. Jessica later moved to softball, playing for the View Royal Fastball Association at Helmcken-Centennial Park. She also wanted to try out for the ‘A’

softball team, 2001 Victoria Devils, which coincidentally was also looking for a Head Coach, says Paddy, who has now coached the team for four years. Already a veteran of four BC fastball championships, the Victoria Fastball Club is hosting the U14 ‘A’ Girls Softball Canadian Championships this August so Jessica will also play in her first National Fastball Championships. Both teens also enjoy other sports – hockey for Jordan and figure skating and dance for Jessica. “We both enjoy watching whatever sport they are playing or competing at,” Paddy says. “If we’re not outside in the yard playing catch, we’ve got our gloves and winter jackets on watching them on the ice!”

The Strandlunds – Jordan, Jessica, Paddy and Sue – share a passion for baseball and softball that took them to Angels Stadium several years ago.

As Oak Bay residents look toward spring and the peak real estate period, longtime local realtor Mike Boorman expects to see continued market stability in the municipality. While late winter typically “is a planning time of year,” Boorman and many realtors are busy meeting with homeowners who plan to list their homes in the spring, and are using this time to get their homes looking their best. This is the time to tidy the garden, undertake any small repairs or upgrades, paint and declutter, and review marketing plans for spring, he explains. That way, “when spring hits, we can hit the ground running.” When is the best time to list? “Personally, I recommend at the first sign of spring or just before Easter, provided a choice,” Boorman says, explaining that for families, a spring sale results in a summer closing in time to settle and be ready for school in September. “However, with the low inventory in Oak Bay at present, now is a great time to beat the rush.” At mid-January, there were 45 single-family listings in Oak Bay, 17 condominium listings and two townhouses, with three singlefamily sales recorded in the first two weeks of the year. Through the year, “we typically see about twice this number on the market and can expect to see over 100 Oak Bay homes in the peak of the spring season,” Boorman says. Coming off 2014, the Oak Bay market saw: • 256 sales of single-family homes; • an average sale price of $778,000;

Mike Boorman sees the Oak Bay market heading toward a good year of increased demand and low supply. • 63 sales over $1,000,000; • 11 sales under $600,000; • a highest sale of $4.6 million; • a lowest sale of $425,000; • the bulk of sales – 105 – in the $600,000 to $800,000 range. Boorman expects the local market to continue in a similar manner, given the stability of Oak Bay real estate. Homes in the municipality, known for its safety and the quality and consistency of its neighbourhoods and streetscapes,

provide a secure real estate investment, he explains. “When people drive through any area of Oak Bay, they see a consistency.” Residents appreciate the recreation opportunities, the calibre of schools, the shopping and the proximity to both the waterfront and downtown. “A really good day is when you can do everything and stay within the municipal borders. You can feel like you’ve done so much but

you’ve remained in the community, and potentially all on foot.” Who’s buying in Oak Bay? Early retirees from other cities and provinces are among the key demographics Boorman is seeing, plus existing homeowners relocating, either downsizing or up-sizing as their family grows. “The word on the street among my realtor colleagues is it appears to be heading toward a good year of increased demand and low supply,” Boorman says.

Victoria realtors open high-end brokerage Longtime Oak Bay resident Scott Piercy is one of three Victoria realtors who are making the move to an international brokerage. Piercy will be joined by partners James LeBlanc and Shelby Donald in opening a new office in downtown Victoria for Engel & Völkers, an international brokerage focused on luxury residential sales and property management, commercial real estate and yacht brokerage. This is the second high-end real estate announcement in Victoria in the past few months. Newport Realty announced an affiliation with Christie’s International Real Estate in fall 2014. “Engel & Völkers is a good fit for the calibre of real estate we have been focused on throughout our
