Message from the Board of Directors <<< LANGLEY GOOD TIMES CRUISE-IN SOCIETY >>>

Board members left to right: Lori Watts, Dick Hooper, Wayne Patterson, Corinna Ulvild, Martin Brown, Eric Taylor, Riccardo Sestito, Rich Ulvild. Inset photo right: Audrey Stebanuk.

We encourage you to come and we encourage you to give to our fundraiser as you can.

>>> Out in the distance you hear that sweet rumble. It’s early in the day, the sun is shining, the air is clean and crisp and in the corner of your eye you catch a glimpse of the deepest shine of your favourite colour on your dream ride. You think you’re dreaming but you’re not — you’re in downtown Langley at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In. Welcome friends to the 2014 Langley Good Times Cruise-In. Come spend the day with us at Western Canada’s best attended charity event. And remember to bring some youngsters who did not live through the era of hot rods and muscle cars. Watch as they are amazed by the sights and sounds of the day. Start your morning off with a tasty pancake breakfast and a hot cup of coffee from one of our many service clubs. Stroll the streets taking in all the sites of the amazing show vehicles from stock to wildly custom hot rods. Stop and talk to the vehicle owners and thank them for taking the time to build and display such works of art and for supporting our local charities by bringing their prize possessions to our city. Please take the time to check out the local shops and see what they have to offer. With all that walking it’s time for a lunch stop, in our many local restaurants. If it’s entertainment you seek, well you’re at the right

place. Check out the main stage for the “King” — yes the one and only Elvis, as performed by the great Steve Elliott. Don’t forget to take in the Seattle Cossacks Motorcycle Stunt and Drill Team, which is something you must see. If it’s something different you wish to seek, well make your way into the Cascades parking lot to the Cruise-In Market Place to find that special something. Do you feel lucky? Be sure to purchase 50/50 tickets from our Cruise-In approved charity clubs. Exclusively at The Cruise-In, you can buy a ticket to win the Ultimate Garage. Sponsored by Lordco, this package will have everything any gearhead will ever need or want. You want a souvenir to remember your fun-filled day? Again we have that for you as well. Located in the centre of the show, you will find the Cruise–In Souvenir Tent, where you can get anything from T-shirts to mugs. New this year for the first time, you can also get a custom logo on a shirt or jacket. If your size or colour is sold out, don’t worry, you can now order it on the new Cruise-In web store and get that special item. So don’t forget to bring the whole family, and if you have that special ride, please bring it down and put it on display for us all to enjoy. Thank you for your support . Regards, Board of Directors, Langley Good Times Cruise-In Society

Thirty-nine years later; Coincidence or fate? <<< KRISTYL CLARK, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>>

The gleaming ride took his breath away–he vowed to have one just like it when he got older.

>>> Paul Tekatch was just 12 when he spotted a rare car at a dealership his father worked at in Burnaby. The gleaming ride took his breath away-he vowed to have one just like it when he got older. “We walked into the showroom and there it was... a brand new Orange Cougar Eliminator,” said Paul, a 55-year-old Langley Township firefighter and longtimee car buff, who xact sa sam m sset et ooff ho ot wh w heeeels his own 39 would call that exact same hot wheels yea ye arss later. late ter.r. years “I remember “I rem emem embe em berr seeing be seei se eiing eing n the the hood hoo oodd up and an looking at the big 428C 42 8CJJ Ram Ra Airir engine... eng 428CJ I knew exactly what motor it was.” Even though it was back in 1970, Paul still vividly recalls looking in the driver’s side window for the first time. “I saw the hounds tooth cloth bucket seats with the console automatic. I sat in the car and put one hand on the steering wheel and the other hand on the shifter and said to myself, ‘this is a nice car, if only I was of age to

buy it - the competition orange paint with black stripes made it look spectacular.” Around five years ago, Paul was talking with his twin brother, Pete, about cars and the 1970 Orange Cougar Eliminator that they saw at their dad’s place of work at George Black Motors in Burnaby came up in the conversation. Pete, who happened to know the owner and the car, tried to buy it, but always left empty-handed. “According to the Langley family who owned the car, their intention was never to sell it,” explained Paul, noting his brother, who worked in the trucking industry with the owner’s husband, wouldn’t give up trying on behalf of his brother. “Peter talked to the owner about looking at the car one day and made arrangements to see it after work. He also mentioned to the owner about seeing the car at George continued on page 7

A couple of days later, Pete eagerly went to see the car again and chat with the owner. The car was parked outside under a commercial awning that had fallen down from the heavy snow load; one pole poked a hole into the hood. “The owner didn’t want to go out there because he was so devastated to see the car like that,” said Paul. On his way home, Pete called his brother at work to break the bad news – the car was not in the shape he had hoped for. “After we talked about it more, he said for me to meet him after I got off work,” said Paul. When they arrived , they lifted the pole off of the hood — at that moment, their fate was sealed. “Pete caught a glimpse of the big 428 CJ with the original ram air cleaner and the engine seemed to be untouched, “ said Paul. “At that moment he said, ‘we

Since taking ownership of the Cougar Eliminator, Paul has detailed the engine compartment on the underside of the car, cleaned the interior and has had the original engine rebuilt. “On August 16, 2009 the car started and was Air Cared and put on the road on Aug. 27 of that same year with the original body. Cougar Eliminator continued the brothers. “It is hard to believe but the story is true and a rare coincidence,” said Paul. “Who would have thought a kid growing up at 12 years old would end up buying this unique muscle car 39 years later? While Paul was hoping to drive the Cougar Eliminator to the Cruise-In this year, one of his all-time favourite community events, duty at the fire hall beckons. “I’ve been attending since the very beginning,” said Paul, who will celebrate 30 years with the fire department this October. “If’ I’m not working the day of the event, I’m down there kicking tires, talking to all the people I know. It’s a great show!”

Elvis Elite headlines entertainment lineup <<< MONIQUE TAMMINGA, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> The entertainment line-up for this year’s Langley Good Times Cruise-In is looking as hot as the hot rods in the show. As much a part of the show as the cars, Elvis Elite will be rocking the main stage again this year. With his signature hip swinging moves and butterscotch voice, Steve Elliott, aka Elvis Elite, has been entertaining the huge crowds for nine years now on the main stage on the one-way part of Fraser Highway. New to the show is Hang-10 Hangmen, who will bring their high energy surfer tunes to the casino parking lot stage. Also at the casino parking lot, and back by

popular demand, are the Seattle Cossacks - a motorcycle stunt and drill team. Take 15 men who perform jaw dropping stunts on 15 vintage motorcycles. It’s really something to see and always draws a big crowd. Also new to the scene, but not to be missed is the Roadmen Car Club’s Sideshow in the parking lot behind Frostings north on Glover Road from Fraser Highway. Playing among pin up girls and the real Klassic cars and rat rods will be the Six Gun Romeo band. The five-piece rockabilly band, fronted by John Dykstra, is a high energy rock and roll band.

Cruise-In steers charities full speed ahead <<< KRISTYL CLARK, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>>

For 2014, there are seven official nonprofit organizations set to benefit from the Cruise-In’s fundraising. Here’s a roundup of this year’s lucky recipients. >>>CRUISE-IN<<<

>>> Aside from being a haven for automotive eye candy and car buffs galore, the Langley Good Times CruiseIn serves as a lifeline for several local charities, both big and small. While every cent collected at the popular volunteer-run car show goes straight to the event’s list of official charities, even many smaller-scale non-profits benefit. Last year, around $55,000 was raised, a portion of which went to one of the event’s newest official recipients – PuCKS.

Hear that? t? Exactly!

PuCKS Launched in 2005, PuCKS (Promoting Community through Kids in Sport) is a non-profit society that promotes kids either financially in-need, behaviourally at-risk, or recently re-settled in Canada to do well in school through the motivation of sports. This is the second year the organization has been chosen as one of the official Cruise-In charities — a decision that has board members and participants jumping — and in many cases, skating — for joy. “The fact that the Langley Cruise-In has

chosen our organization for a second year means a lot to us,” said Connie Klimek, founder and executive director of PuCKS, who, last year, received a check for $4,000 that was used to maintain one of its after school programs. “Our after school Lit-Fit (homework club) was able to add ‘Tutoring Tuesdays’ for our senior high school students destined for post-secondary education.” continued on page 15

Cruise-In Charities continued The Langley resident and mother of three, who began promoting PuCKS 10 years ago, admits she was naive to the magnitude of the Cruise-In until last year. “When we arrived on the Saturday morning, we were shocked to realize that this event is huge. On a day that was forecast for rain, the sun shone brightly — there was literally music and dancing in the streets. Laughter and chatter everywhere. Langley City was buzzing and bright.” PuCKS prides itself on being an organization grounded in a philosophy of empowerment, not entitlement, says Klimek. “We pride ourselves on being very active with our sponsors. Our youth welcomes the chance to give back by volunteering regularly in the community. They log their annual volunteer hours in their personal portfolio (that includes an Accountability Contract). Our youth don’t want or expect a free ride.” For PuCKs, the event helps steer the organization and those who benefit from it full speed ahead into a bright future. “It has not only kept our organization financially viable, it has given our youth an opportunity to be active community participants and to support a cause that’s sup-

porting them.” With a passion for motherhood and a career teaching community development and health promotion to nursing students, Klimek wanted to combine her two worlds. “I wanted to become an effective role model for community development and health promotion to both my kids and my students,” she said. The organization promotes community by keeping kids in school using hockey as the tool. Marginalization of kids and families is reduced by offering: 1. Power Nation (beginner’s hockey program), 2. Power Up (advanced hockey program), 3. Lit-Fit (after school homework and literacy programs), 4. Community Development, Health Promotion, Business and Research Placements for University Students. And while PuCKs was first introduced in Langley, other B.C. communities are noticing the positive impact. “More people in government, business, education and health are becoming more aware, more supportive and involved in PuCKS,” said Klimek. “The goal is to launch in 30 communities across Canada and five in the Western United States, which should become a reality by 2020.”

In the past year, there have been several changes to the PuCKs program. In addition to hockey being offered at Twin Rinks on Tuesday afternoons, many youth have enjoyed becoming key players on great teams with tremendous success in the Langley United Soccer Association, notes Klimek. “We also completed the Refugee Trauma Support Project (supported by the Ministry of Children and Families, Child and Youth Mental Health) helping 12 Karen youth to create personal digital stories and their families’ roots and culture.” With the money the organization is set to receive this year from the Cruise-In, Klimek notes that plans include maintaining Lit-Fit’s afterschool homework club, expanding Tutoring Tuesdays to jive with the needs and goals of youth moving toward post-secondary or employment in the trades, enhancing the hockey and soccer programs and actively recruiting a more diverse representation of Grade 5 and 6 students to engage with PuCKS.

Your organization attracts many folks from far and wide. It boosts our local economy. Because you give, we all get. Because we get, we can give. It’s a circle that is very special and very appreciated.” For more information about PuCKS, visit www.pucksprograms.ca For 2014, there are seven official non-profit organizations set to benefit from the Cruise-In’s fundraising. Here’s a roundup of this year’s lucky recipients. Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association The Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association (VTEA) has been providing therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults of varying abilities since 1983. The aims of therapeutic riding include balance improvement, co-ordination development, mobilization of stiff joints, development of weak muscles, prevention of contractures, improvement of circulation, relaxation of spasticity, development of self-esteem and independence, and recreation. Additional benefits include improved learning, concentration, spatial awareness and overall relaxation of the body and the mind. In addition to providing a source of exercise and sense of achievement, riding gives participants independence from artificial aids such as crutches and wheelchairs. With 80 to 100 clients in their programs each year, donations to VTEA go directly to benefit the riders. For more info, visit www.vtea.ca

Thank you to all our valued customers! Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary There’s no doubt about it that the Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is a driving force in raising funds for the Langley Memorial Hospital. Based solely on a team of dedicated volunteers, it is one of the major sources of funding the hospital receives. In addition to helping support patients through the purchase of new hospital equipment, the non-profit organization also logs countless hours with various volunteer duties throughout the hospital. You’ll find the auxiliary volunteers working at the hospital gift shop, lotto booth, vendor tables, as well as the Penny Pincher Thrift Shop on 56 Avenue. The organization’s popular store will be moving in the coming year to the former credit union building at 20550 Fraser Highway, which is currently home to Langley Arts Council. For the past couple of years, the LMHA has set up an information tent at the event, where they hand out brochures and answer questions from visitors. The vehicle must be properly test driven and subjected to a detailed diagnostic process before any shop can realistically say whether or not a major problem exists and how much it will cost. This is where we out perform everyone, including the dealers. Cruise-In Charities continued a major milestone – its 65th anniversary, which was commemorated by its pledge of $500,000 towards the expansion of Langley Memorial Hospital’s Maternity Unit. If you would like more information, visit www.langleymemorialhospitalauxiliary.ca Langley Community Support Groups Society Without the help that has come from the Cruise-In over the years, the Langley Community Support Groups Society would cease to exist. Formerly known as the Langley Stroke Recovery, the non-profit organization – one that has helped countless men and women of all ages to improve their quality of life – recently branched out to become an independent society. While it has a new name, the non-profit organization continues to provide exceptional resources for stroke survivors

as well as anyone with a similar disability in the community who could benefit from their services. The society offers a Stroke Survivors Group called Young Strokes 4 Hope – a three-hour program once a week for young stroke survivors that offers exercise, communication groups, games and the much-needed peer support from others the same age dealing with the same life issues. Another program offered that is kept afloat thanks to the Cruise-In is SOAR (Stroke Optimistic Atmosphere Recovery). The latter is a three-hour, once-a-week program for stroke survivors 60 and over who want to continue working on their recovery after returning home from the hospital or rehab. For more info on the Langley Community Support groups Society, call Marilyn Piticco at 604-882-4672.

Langley Lordco owner Mike Coates has once again stepped up to organize the Ultimate Garage giveaway at this year’s Langley Good Times Cruise-In, taking place Saturday, Sept. 6. Interactive online talk show to feature Cruise-In <<< FRANK BUCHOLTZ, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN EDITOR • PHOTO BY ALYSSA O’DELL >>> >>> The Fraser Valley’s first ever interactive online talk show launched this summer, showcasing the people, places and events South of the Fraser River. While the show’s hosts, Michael Thorne and Kristyl Clark, usually film in their Langley studio, they’re getting ready to film an entire episode at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In, showcasing their top five highlights of the annual event. “We’re really excited to get out there with our microphones in hand and interview some of the car guys and the crowd,” said Thorne, a Langley realtor from RE/MAX Little Oak and cofounder of the My North Langley fan page. “This is such a fantastic show that does so much for our community and the local charities that benefit from it.” Clark, who is known for her community blog,

www.valleymom.ca and her Pink Laundry parenting column in The Langley Times and other Black Press newspapers, says it will be tough to narrow down their list to just five to keep with the theme of their show. “I’ve always been a big fan of the Cruise-In and try to go every year. From the food and people to the live entertainment, shopping and of course, the classic cars, there’s plenty to see and do.” One thing’s for sure, both Clark and Thorne have plans to sink their teeth into an In-N-Out burger. “Michael swears it’s the best burger he has ever had from a fast food restaurant,” noted Clark. “It will be a first-time experience for me though.” To check out Fraser Valley 5 or to share your favourite highlights of the Langley Good Times Cruise-In, visit www.fraservalley5.com

Gravity-defying bikers to cruise back into town <<< KRISTYL CLARK, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>>

>>> Hogs and Harleys and leather — oh my! While the Langley Good Times Cruise-In is known for its plethora of classic automobiles and hot wheels, motorcycles are also becoming quite the attraction. Last year, the Seattle Cossacks, a motorcycle stunt and drill team comprised of 15 men who performed jawdropping theatrics on 15 vintage motorcycles, came rolling into town and put on an unforgettable show you really have to see for yourself to believe. With all the great feedback from the event attendees, the Cruise-In has invited this team back once again to dazzle the crowd with their spectacular gravity-defying show. For Sam Chedester, team captain of the Seattle Cossacks, it’s a real honour to be invited back across the border to be part of the event once again. “We really enjoyed ourselves and the great crowds that came out to watch our performances,” he said, also

noting he’s a big fan of the event’s charitable aspect. “It is quite impressive that all of the proceeds go straight to the charities and we find it commendable that there are so many volunteers putting on the Langley Cruise-In that help make it possible.” The Seattle Cossacks date back to the 1930s, with a group of racers and hill climbers who developed stunts to entertain themselves between events. Entertaining fans came later. The first organizational meeting took place in January, 1938 with a group of Seattle racers, riders, delivery personnel, business men, and continued on next page

Seattle Cossacks continued other interested participants. By April they had a formal organization and a set of bylaws that included ‘’to entertain and promote the positive image of motorcycling.” Nowadays, the group also puts a strong emphasis on promoting rider safety.

This time around we’ve added a few new stunts and brought back a few items that we haven’t done in several years. You haven’t seen anything yet.” For more information about the Seattle Cossacks, visit www.seattlecossacks.com

The free show, which is slated to take place on 56 Avenue (south of the Value Village parking lot) is going to be even bigger and better than last year, promises Chedester. “While the shows went pretty well, we are our own worst critics and always strive for improvement.

Kirmac a new sponsor

Banks vs. Mortgage Professionals

<<< FRANK BUCHOLTZ, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN EDITOR >>> >>> Kirmac Collision and Autoglass, which has a store in Langley, has come aboard as a sponsor of this year’s Langley Good Times Cruise-In. Kirmac is a B.C.-based collision repair company. Founded in 1973 by Ian and Ken McIntosh, it has regional operations in B.C. and Washington state. It has a well-established charitable program, “Kirmac Cares for Kids,” which donates a percentage of earned income from each vehicle repair to the B.C. Children’s Hospital Foundation. It presented a cheque for $213,371.25 to the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation during the Miracle Weekend telethon that ran May 30 to June 1. “As a proud, family-owned business that’s operated for over 40 years, it gives us great pleasure to be able to give back to the kids,” said Kirmac’s CEO Ian McIntosh. “Our customers have been a key contributor to this program and we hope they will continue to

support it and help us make a difference every year for those who need our help the most. Our goal this year is to reach a fiveyear total donation of $1 million.” The “Kirmac Cares for Kids” program started in 2011 in Kirmac’s 12 Vancouver and Lower Mainland locations. The donation also included contributions from Kirmac’s vendors and from employees through activities such as “Jeans Day Friday” and regular payroll deductions. B.C. Children’s Hospital is located in Vancouver and provides expert care for the province’s most seriously ill or injured children, including newborns and adolescents. The hospital also provides vital specialized health services that may not be available anywhere else in the province. To find out more about the “Kirmac Cares for Kids” program, you can visit www.kirmac.com/kirmac-cares-for-kids.html.

As a result, clients benefit from the trust, confidence, and security of

knowing they are getting the best mortgage for their needs. Welcome to the Langley Good Times Cruise-In! As a car enthusiast, I was pleased to work with the Speciality Vehicle Association to commemorate July 12 as BC Collector Car Day. Enjoy the Cruise in, and thank you to all of the volunteers and participants who make this show a success every year!

“This year, we will have a carnival theme and will be fundraising in support of people fighting cancer. Funds will be used to create chemotherapy care kits.” And while the restaurants are always hopping busy during the Cruise-In, Hallowville Manor at 20568 56 Ave., also gets its fair share of event-goers. The year-round costume shop carries swing dress, rockabilly clothing, local bowling shirts made by ‘rebel rouser’ and other car-related tees for men and children, which appeals to the car crowd, says owner Tanya Nahal. “I have been there for almost five years and the Cruise-In works well for me.” Nahal says she’d like to see more events in Downtown Langley, like the CruiseIn, to attract new visitors and locals to shop in the area. “I wish we had more events like that which will bring more people out here. I feel people forget to shop locally.” So next time you find yourself in Langley City, whether it’s during the big car show or another occasion, make sure to pop into the stores and grab a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants that roll out the red carpet every year for the Cruise-In. The burger is back, baby! <<< KRISTYL CLARK, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> While Canadians usually have to cross the border to sink their teeth into a juicy In-N-Out burger, fast foodies can get their fix for one day only. Yes, it’s back and ready to compete with the automotive eye candy at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In. The popular California-based chain restaurant, known for its legions of loyal patrons throughout North America, will be wheeling a cookout trailer to the event for the fifth year to serve up their famed burgers and hand over the proceeds from every sale and sponsorship to the Cruise-In’s official charities. Despite the lengthy lines in the sweltering heat, the wait is worth every minute, says Michael Thorne, a long-time Cruise-In fan and self proclaimed In-N-Out burger buff. “I’ve waited 45 minutes, but would easily wait an hour for a “double-double” burger and double crispy fries, “ said the North Langley resident, who runs the My North Langley Facebook fan page. “In-N-Out is one of the reasons my passport is always valid — it’s a magical thing.” Even Eric Taylor, the president of the Cruise-In, swears the burger is in a league of its own. “It’s an experience you have to see and taste . .. you don‘t get those things here,”

Walnut Grove Glass & Aluminum LTD.

said Taylor of the burger with a cult following. The In-N-Out cookout trailer rolls into the marketplace bright and early the morning of the Cruise-In to begin prepping for the foodie frenzy. Everyone on board from the dishwasher and driver to the cooks and cashiers are out washing and polishing the truck. Once they are done making the burgers, the word gets out and the line starts to build. “Yes, the lines are long, but even if you go to an actual In-N-Out burger joint in the States, you can expect to wait half an hour,” said Thorne. Aside from it being one tasty burger, the fact that In-N-Out donates the food, staff and facilities to the Cruise-In’s charities, makes their grub even that much more delicious, says Taylor. “The only thing we pay for is the cost of their fuel to drive from Los Angeles and back.” One of In-N-Out Burger’s vice presidents, Carl Van Fleet, said the 64-year-old restaurant, owned by the Snyder family, is honoured to once again be part the Cruise-In. “We really feel it is a great event… a great way to provide philanthropic support.”

down mystery of Cadillac hearse <<< JENNIFER LANG, CLOVERDALE REPORTER >>>

>>> To some it might seem a macabre fascination, but for Eddie Stringer and his car-collecting ng son, a classic hearse from British Columbia is the ultimate automobile acquisition. The Stringers, who live in the U.K., are appealing to area residents for more information on their 1960 Cadillac Eureka. ng The distinctive hearse starred in a constellation of made-in-B.C. movies and took top billing y. in a local protest over a political decision that haunts car, truck and aviation buffs to this day. Eddie, a professional photographer and theatre promoter, and his youngest son, James, a jeweller, are determined to find out everything they can about the hearse. They’ve contacted former owners and others with a connection to the “somewhat famous”” Cadillac, turning to photographers, film producers, cameramen and newspaper editors in a bid to dig up the missing pieces in the creepy car’s history. James has owned about 15 American cars, including a Cadillac Seville Bustle Back hee bought at age 22, his first collectible automobile. A few months back, James sold his “lovely” ‘79 Trans Am, intending to use the money to build a jewellery workshop in the garage. “But,” says Eddie, “James being James and his craving for American classics, he managed to find this 1960 Cadillac Eureka hearse for sale near Vancouver.” Every story has a beginning, but the Cadillac’s continued on next page first 15 years after leaving the factory floor

Hearse continued in late 1960 are shrouded in mystery, say the Stringers, who have traced its ownership back as far as 1975. It was originally all black, but a later paint job saw the sides decked out in silver with a black roof – which is how it appeared in the 1996 movie Kissed, an independent B.C.-made film about a funeral home worker with an unusual love life. It was re-painted all black – the shade it is now – before appearing in 2000’s Mr. Rice’s Secret (starring David Bowie). The Stringers’ quest for details turned up a 1970s newspaper clipping from the Merritt Herald which shows proprietor John Bann outside the Merritt Funeral Home. “It describes the car as the pride of his fleet,” says Eddie. The funeral business was sold, and, according to Eddie, the new owner, Peter Wright, said there wasn’t a Cadillac on the books at the time of the sale. “So, the mystery there is rather fascinating,” says

Eddie. “Maybe it was sold by John Bann, or maybe he kept it.” He’s tracked down Bann’s granddaughter but is presently awaiting a response. Meanwhile, thanks to a meticulous recordkeeper, the Stringers know that Surrey resident Marcel Hill bought the car in late 1989 from Howard’s Distributors. In 1993, he sold it to Vancouver resident Rolf Eipper, who kept a journal during his ownership until 2006. Now 79, Eipper helped the pair nail down much of the history of the car, including helping them discover the name of the previous owner, Hill. The fin tail hearse belonged to Hill when it led a rally that attracted 2,000 protesters in Cloverdale who turned out to oppose the provincial government’s decision to shut the B.C. Transportation Museum. (Page 37) An undated MetroValley News Service clipping (“Cloverdale rallies to save auto museum”) shows the hearse in front of the museum. The Eureka’s Hollywood North era ranges

from 1989 to the early 2000s, when it was rented out to movie productions such as Cadence (with Martin and Charlie Sheen), Stephen King’s It, Deliver Them From Evil, Kissed, Mr. Rice’s Secret, Suspect Behaviour, Riding the Bullet and Happy Gilmour – the immortal golf comedy starring Adam Sandler – to name a few. The Stringers also want to fill in the blanks between 2006 and 2014 as the car’s most recent chapter is murky. Today, the limo has 48,000 miles on it. “Not bad for 54 years of age,” Eddie allows. “Did it stand still until we bought it?” he wonders. “We think this is very likely.” He says a Pitt Meadows resident bought the car in 2006 but that is not the man who sold it to James in 2014. The hearse had been in storage for a long time before the Stringers bought it. They had it shipped out of Seattle, WA, to the U.K. – a journey that was interrupted by the port strike earlier this year.

The Caddy arrived on May 12, but it was not quite in the condition advertised. Rather than being in near-pristine condition, it turned out the floors were rotten, the metal was due for a respray and the car needed “serious renovation and restoration.” It’s now in “hearse hospital having new floors put in it,” says Eddie. Understandably, communications with the most recent owner are strained – forcing their search into an untimely dead end. “We just want to know its entire history – like, it’s life in the funeral trade up till Marcel bought it,” says Eddie, crediting both Hill and Eipper, especially, with getting the wheels rolling on their cross-Atlantic research project. “What a fantastic character,” Eddie says of Eipper. “He is a UFO hunter, meteoritefinder, crop circle photographer – such a magical character.”

Jim McRobbie ready to Cruise-In this year <<< KRISTYL CLARK, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> Jim McRobbie may have experienced a rocky start to his year, but he’s ready to enjoy a smooth ride this summer. The 67-year-old Langley retiree, who became critically ill in the fall with a serious blood infection while on route to his son’s wedding across the border, has plans to cruise the open road in his yellow 1962 rampside Chevrolet Corvair pickup and make a pit stop at his favourite annual event – the Langley Good Times Cruise-In. McRobbie will have plenty to share with his fellow car comrades, but one story in particular that will be pretty tough to top. Back in October, McRobbie and his wife were headed for their son’s destination wedding in Oregon. While they would eventually arrive, it would be too late for the wedding. “I thought I had the flu or food poisoning,” explained McRobbie, who became suddenly ill on their way to the wedding. A trip to the hospital would prove his theory wrong. Unfortunately, his diagnosis was far more serious than a common stomach bug. “I ended up in the emergency room and was told that I had a blood infection – I still don’t know where or how I got it, but it decided to rear its ugly head that very day when I was 12 miles away from the wedding. If we hadn’t gotten there in time, I probably wouldn’t be here today.”

McRobbie was insistent that he had to leave to make the wedding, but attending the event wasn’t going to be a possibility. Even so, he says he couldn’t figure out why his nurse kept pumping him for information about the nuptials. “He kept asking me about the location, time – basically anything I could give him.” What the retired Langley Township construction foreman didn’t realize was that the man – a total stranger to McRobbie – was sending his wife and daughter to the wedding to capture the event live on video using the Facetime app. “I couldn’t believe it – they got dressed up, drove all the way over there and videotaped the whole thing live so I wouldn’t miss it... my daughter-in-law at that point hadn’t even realized I wasn’t there until someone said, everyone turn and wave to Jimbo – there I was lying in my hospital bed in ICU.” To make up for missing out on the wedding ceremony and photos, his son and new daughter-in-law are heading out his way this summer to do some wedding retakes at White Rock beach with their dad. Also on McRobbie’s to-do list is to take his Corvair on the open road as much as possible. One might say he has to make up for lost time -- after all, it took him around nine years to find the shiny prized vehicle.

“I was just about to finally give up looking for it when a friend of mine called and said ‘your truck is in Seattle,’” explained McRobbie of the vehicle that had been on his wish list. “At first I thought he was just kidding – he’s a bit of a joker – but he really was being truthful.” McRobbie headed across the border to test drive the truck and brought it home a week later where the restoration process began. “The mechanics were pretty solid when I bought it – I mostly did the body work, upholstery, detailing... all that kind of stuff.” While McRobbie won’t be showing off his prized set of wheels at the Cruise-In this year, he enjoys taking in the spec-

tacular sights, sounds and stories that await him year after year in Langley City’s downtown core. “I’ve been a car nut my whole life and go to as many car shows as I can – the Cruise-In has always been a favourite.” For the classic car buff, the social aspect is what he enjoys most – even in the midst of all the automotive eye candy. “It’s like a guy’s day out,” he laughed. “You get to run into all of your old buddies and find out what projects they’ve been working on over the winter – what better way to keep tabs on everyone?”

DIY Cruise-In T-shirt now available <<< KRISTYL CLARK, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>> >>> Tired of sporting the same ol’ Cruise-In T-shirts as everyone else? Are you looking for a one-of-a-kind design that will knock their socks off? Here’s your chance to own something truly unique. The Langley Good Times Cruise-In has partnered with Greystone Promotional Products Inc. in Port Kells to offer a brand new addition to their souvenir program – one that allows the customer to be the designer. “Greystone has really helped us take our design up a level – their quality of work is just awesome,” said Martin Brown, vice-president of the Cruise-In. “We told them what our vision was and they took it to the next level.” Now, instead of having a few T-shirt designs to chose from, the options are endless, says Brown.

“We’ve got about five different new logos available and everything from Tshirts to button-down shirts, hats and a very nice leather jacket to choose from. You can pick up a shirt, add another logo to it or say, ‘I want that logo on that shirt.’ If we don’t have it ready made up, we can heat transfer it onto a shirt right before your eyes . . . If you want a logo on the left shoulder, we can customize it.” And for those who want their custom -designed T-shirt ready to wear for the big event, there’s the option to order it online. “As with all of our other souvenirs, we can have it shipped right to your house,” said Brown. “This is a great option for those who don’t want to have to worry about lining up on show day.”

Sideshow takes visitors back to the 1950s <<< FRANK BUCHOLTZ, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN EDITOR >>> >>> One of the fun events at this year’s Cruise-In will be the Sideshow, put on by the Roadmen Custom Car Club and the PinUp Dolls. The event will feature a display of custom cars, which were very popular in the 1950s and 1960s and have in recent years been making a resurgence, along with a pin-up pageant and entertainment from Six Gun Romeo, a rockabilly band. The Sideshow will take place in the Hyland parking lot area where Glover Road used to meet Fraser Highway, just north of the one-way street and east of 204 Street. Glenn “Bubba” Dalton of the Roadmen has been busy bringing together all the various components to make this year’s show a complete package, and he says the aim is to turn the area into a step back into the 1950s. There will be “Kustom Kars” of the style

made famous by designers Gene Winfield and George Barris. These will range from old roadsters to cars like 1949 Mercurys and later models. In the 1950s, these cars were often lowered, pin-striped and customized in a variety of unique ways. Often the people involved in this elaborate work got together as car club members, coming up with designs and working on projects together. The Roadmen club, which is based in Vancouver and has members from all over the

Lower Mainland, embodies this kind of camaraderie. “It’s getting to be more popular,” Dalton says of the custom car movement. “We’re going back to our roots.” Dalton himself has a 1955 Buick, which has been lowered and pin-striped. He says the custom car movement is more than a Canada and United States phenomenon, with interest in it from many parts of the world, as far away as Norway and Australia. Part of that 1950s era of custom car de-

sign involved “pin-up girls.” Women have long been associated with car racing and car shows, and the Sideshow at Cruise-In will feature a pin-up pageant of women, with the 1950s look. They will be wearing sun dresses, and have their hair done up in 1950s styles. Dalton expects about 12 women to compete in the pageant, and they will be judged by a panel of three, including two professional pin-up models and a member of the Roadmen. The pageant gets underway at 1 p.m. The pin-up pageant is being run by Dixie and Lexi of Rock’n Dolls and sponsored by Pinup Perfection Photography. Six Gun Romeo band will provide suitable music to go with the 1950s theme. He invites visitors to drop by the Sideshow and take a step back into the era of custom cars.

1940 Ford Truck is a work in progress <<< DAN FERGUSON, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER • PHOTOS BY DAN FERGUSON >>>

No new paint, but new roofline in store for Langley rat rod. >>> BRETT HALBERT <<<

Front grille of Brett Halbert’s 1940 Ford truck.

>>> A lot of work has been done since Brookswood resident Brett Halbert spotted a sun-bleached 1940 Ford truck sitting under a tree in a farmer’s field. Over the eight years that followed, Halbert and business partner David Garcia have managed to transform the cast-off into a drivable custom vehicle that gets a lot of attention. “Everywhere it goes, it draws a crowd,” says Halbert, a long-time Brookswood resident. He says hardly a day goes by without someone taking a picture of the truck parked in front of Creationz, the high-tech car electronics business Halbert and Garcia operate on Industrial Avenue in Langley City. The once-abandoned cab now sits on a new frame and custom suspension, with a new engine and custom seats. All of it rides on retro-style wire-spoked wheels. Halbert and Garcia are thinking about “chopping” the roof in the not-too-distant future, lowering it to give the

truck a custom profile. But they have no plans to paint any of it any time soon. It’s a “rat rod,” where the goal is to keep the original parts of a weather-beaten antique vehicle in the exact condition they were found in, including the faded paint, scrapes, chips and rust spots. The word for all of that is “patina,” and there are custom car builders who will charge a lot to fake the look of longtime exposure with wire brushes and carefully applied paint on the tops of hoods and roofs. The Ford truck that Halbert, Garcia and their friends have been working on for so long has plenty of the real thing. All that survives of the original paint has become a faded brownish-red on the exterior. Inside the truck cab, protected from the damage done by years of sun and snow, the paint colour is a brighter red, with many chips and scrapes that denote years of heavy use. continued on page 47

work in progress continued Some of the newer metal, like the frame, transmission hump and exhaust headers, has been left unpainted and is acquiring a patina of its own. The motor, on the other hand, has lots of chrome. It is a new Ford 302 V8 engine, a high-performance small-block that develops close to 400 horsepower and it is a slightly unusual choice. “You don’t often see a Ford engine in a Ford [that is being customized with a modern engine],” Halbert says. A number of online car forums suggest the Chevy engines get used because they tend to be slightly less expensive than the Ford equivalent. Halbert has no opinion on that, or the long-running and oftenheated debate over whether Ford or Chevy engines are better. “It’s a Ford so it should have a Ford engine, that’s the way I see it,” he says. Halbert decided he wanted to get a 1940 Ford truck when he saw one driving around town during the Cruise-In. It took a while, and a lot of help from a lot of friends, but now he and Garcia have their own roadworthy version. “I like to drive it as much as I can,” says Halbert, who refers to the Ford as the “shop truck.”

After the roof gets lowered, he isn’t sure what the next upgrade will be, but he expects there will be something. “I’m not sure it will ever be finished.”

Casino back on board Cruise-In wagon <<< KRISTYL CLARK, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN REPORTER >>>

“We are working with the Cruise-In planning team to host a second concert stage.” >>>TANYA GARBARA<<<

Release the Animal Within

>>> While Cascades Casino Hotel & Convention Centre is known as a happening place for locals and tourists alike on the inside, the fun is about to spill out into the parking lot too. For the Langley Good Times Cruise-In, the Langley City hotspot has once again donated a large portion of their front surface parking area to the massive auto event – an area that will be a temporary home to the annual Marketplace, food vendors, a major show sponsor and entertainment. Of course, with increased traffic comes frustration for some. However, a plan is in place to make the congestion more manageable, says Tanya Gabara, the director of public relations for Gateway Casinos & Entertainment Limited. “It’s a large event that consumes most of the Downtown Langley core, so there are always challenges,” she said. “We do our best to assist them and alleviate frustrations

by adding additional directional signage for parking and ensuring staff are attending to questions as efficiently as possible.” Aside from carving out space for the Cruise-In in the surface parking area, Gabara says Cascades Casino is looking to get even more involved this year. “We are working with the Cruise-In planning team to host a second concert stage.” As with any large-scale event in Langley City, the increased foot and car traffic is great for business in the Downtown Langley area. The casino is no exception. Playing a role in community events both big and small is a win-win for all, says Gabara. “We are all a part of the success or failure of business in Langley City. Each of us have to take ownership of driving the success in our local community. If we sit back and wait for it to happen, it never will.” This year, Cruise-In attendees will have even more op-

Vintage & Collector Plates <<< CHRISTOPHER GARRISH, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN CONTRIBUTOR • PHOTOS BY BRUCE LAW & JIM RYAN >>> >>> For vintage car owners, a licence plate can be an important facet of their vehicle and is a significant component in its formal presentation at car shows and parades. Yet, unlike the vehicles to which they are being attached, a license plate from a vehicle’s “year of manufacture” is one that has long since expired and cannot be used for legal registration purposes. While a multitude of registration options now exist from temporary operating permits, monthly registration to dedicated collector and antique licence plates, 50 years ago, the very idea that a car could be considered “antique” was still a new concept. Not surprisingly, Michigan — home of the North American auto industry — was the first jurisdiction to introduce a dedicat-

ed licence plate for vehicles built in the first decades of the 20th century, when it began issuing historic vehicle plates in 1946 to mark the golden Jubilee of the auto industry. For other jurisdictions, such as British Columbia, similar programs allowing for the flexible use of vintage cars were still many years away. As a result, some vintage cars were unable to participate in a number of high profile rallies and smaller local parades held to celebrate the centennial of the province in 1958 — such as a vintage car rally organized between Fernie and Victoria. In order for vintage cars from British Columbia to participate, owners were required to obtain a full year’s registration, despite the prospect of only using the vehicles during the summer

YEL

driving season. Whereas vintage cars registered in Washington State were able to avail themselves of that state’s new “Horseless Carriage” licence plates which had been introduced a few years earlier and limited the use of cars bearing the plates, but allowed their registration and licencing at much lower fees. Eight years later, as the province began to gear up for the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the merger between the Crown colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia in 1966, and the Canadian Centennial the following year, Attorney General Robert Bonner announced the creation of a new antique vehicle licence plate. Bonner felt that many of the public events that would be held over the next two years would be enlivened by

the participation of vintage cars. The province finally recognized that older vehicles were not generally used on a daily basis, and it did not make sense for their owners to take out an annual registration. At the time of their release, Bonner also felt compelled to state that the licence plates were not meant to denote the Liquor Control Board, a misconception that was being attributed to the word “Vintage” displayed at the top of the plate. Twenty-four years later, the province introduced a new collector licence plate, which allowed for greater flexibility than the antique plates by permitting a vehicle to be operated for pleasure use. had been reluctant to introduce the program until the day it came under the control of the Solicitor General’s department, which was headed at the time by Russ Fraser, a classic car enthusiast and owner. The corporation was subsequently quick to implement the collector vehicle program, “which is one of the most unique in North America” with innovative options such as the “multi-vehicle” licence plate which can be used on up to six different vehicles. The success of the collector licence plate program can be witnessed by the number of plates issued — approximately 50,000 collector plates since 1990, compared with 8,300 antique plates since 1966 — and has allowed those involved in the vintage car hobby to hold numerous fund raising events (such as the Langley Good Times Cruise-In) that have raised funds for various community organizations including hospitals, school programs and charities. All of which lead the province to declare July 12th “Collector Car Appreciation Day and Month” earlier this year.

Memories flow when one sees a certain car at Cruise-In <<< FRANK BUCHOLTZ, LANGLEY TIMES CRUISE-IN EDITOR >>>

We arrived at the car rental garage and were handed the keys to a brand-new, never before driven Dodge Charger. >>>FRANK BUCHOLTZ<<<

>>> Langley Good Times Cruise-In offers a once-yearly opportunity to go back into the past and dredge up some good memories. There are many car shows each year in the Lower Mainland, and there are plenty of them in the Langley area, which is a hotbed for car collectors. During the summer months, it is rare to drive on the streets of Langley City and Langley Township and not see a collectable car. Classic cars bring back memories which we sometimes have put in the far recess of our minds. Cruise-In is almost sure to bring back memories for almost all in attendance, because there are so many different cars and trucks on display each year. A memory that was in the far recess of my mind happened earlier this summer while in California. We were in San Francisco for my son’s wedding and had made arrangements to rent a car to take us from San Francisco to the Napa Valley, and on to Sacramento. The arrangements we had made with Hertz had us renting a “Chevrolet Malibu or equivalent.” We arrived at the car rental garage and were handed the keys to a brand-new, never before driven Dodge Charger. It was a dark brown colour, and is designed to bring back memories of a true classic — the 1969 Dodge Charger. And that’s when the memories started coming back. I was in Grade 12 in 1969, and we had a new English teacher at our school. He was not too much older than many of the students (in fact, he ended up marrying one of my classmates) and he had a brand-new gold Dodge Charger, with a black vinyl roof. That car attracted the attention of virtually every male in the school — particularly those who were of driving age, or getting very close to it. It had power — you could tell just by listening to the motor. It had tremendous good looks. The Chrysler muscle cars of that era, Plymouth Super Bees and Challengers, Dodge Chargers and GTXs were designed to get people to look again. That’s one reason they were often painted in unusual bright fluorescent colours, which were unique for cars of that era.

There are often Chrysler muscle cars at Cruise-In, and I always stop to take a good close look. That was the era when cars were built for speed and power, with no regard for the (almost negligible) cost of gasoline. Many young drivers aspired to drive such a car, but most didn’t usually get the chance, as their wallets weren’t fat enough to purchase such a car. But that didn’t stop them from dreaming. So this particular Dodge Charger, owned by my English teacher, was one which led to a lot of envy. It is quite likely some of the boys in the school even vowed to own such a car at some point in the future. Driving that Charger in California a few weeks ago, enjoying its good looks and feeling the power it had to easily pass cars on congested freeways, brought back all those memories. For most of us, many of our memories are intricately connected with cars. They might involve family vacation trips, where long hours were spent in a car. It could involve a car or truck used for work, or the first car we drove or owned. It might be a memory of a special car owned by grandparents or a special aunt or uncle. The Langley Good Times Cruise-In allows many memories to flow forth, because there are so many cars in one place at one time, on an early September weekend. Organizers work hard all year to make the event happen, and even though some of those who show their cars often don’t decide to attend until the last minute, that actually ensures there is always something different to see. Add to the amazing display of cars a number of special events, such as the Seattle Cossacks motorcycle show, the amazing entertainment on the street, the only appearance in Canada of In-N-Out Burgers and a great marketplace area, and it’s hard to resist the allure of Cruise-In. Those who are not car collectors still have memories which come out when they see a particular car or truck on display. Cruise-In is an opportunity which is simply too good to miss. Some long-forgotten memories are almost certain to arise.

SEE YOU AT THE 2014 GOOD TIMES LANGLEY CRUISE-IN!
