Hospital board reviews 2015 priority projects
Good things come in threes City will have three ambassadors, no queen this year BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff
The only thing better than two royals representing the City of Trail, is three. Instead of crowning Miss Trail 2015 and one princess, this year all three Trail Ambassador candidates are assured a crown and an equal sharing of royalty opportunities. The Trail Ambassador Program was at risk of being cancelled entirely when so few young ladies signed on to be part of the annual competition, which awards the queen and princess titles during Silver City Days. The three girls, Timberlyn Miles, Gina Oostlander and Serena Deadmarsh, so inspired program coordinators Bev Benson and Michelle Epp, that they were determined the show would go on. “These girls have been so dedicated even though they knew in December that there might not be a program this year,” said Benson. “But they still showed up at every city function to volunteer. They've inspired us to look at this as a new opportunity.” All three J.L. Crowe Secondary students will be titled Trail Ambassador and travel to future events and parades in other communities as a pair or trio. First, they are expected to complete all the requirements of the program, including speech writing and presentation, a community project, continued volunteerism, and preparing a talent as well as three-hour training sessions every Sunday in the Greater Trail Community Centre. While the culmination of the program won't be the traditional Friday night pageant, there will be an open reception to showcase the girls' work. “We don't know what that will be yet, but there will be a celebration,” said Benson. “There needs to be a special moment for the crowning and for the retiring girls.” The three candidates agree that with competition off the table, there is some breathing room. However, the

All three stellar candidates in the Trail Ambassador Program will equally share the crown and royal duties this year. There won't be a Miss Trail 2015 pageant, instead the program will culminate in a Meet-the-Ambassadors evening that will include a talent segment and speeches. cousins and wanted to be a role model for them so this year is my last chance to be in the program. But getting up in front of people is still definitely a big thing for me, because I tend to stutter when I am nervous.” See AMBASSADORS, Page 3
The regional hospital board can't do much about a bedside manner, but they can do a lot about a bedside monitor. About $1.5 million worth of upgrades are on the list of potential projects at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) this year, including a new system that would directly feed a patient's vital signs from bedside to the nursing station. The $435,000 upgrade would continuously monitor blood pressure, temperature, blood oxygen level and heart rhythms. The data would be sent to the hospital's central system then displayed in real time, and alert clinicians if certain parameters fall outside of acceptable ranges. The system would replace replace the 13-year model now in use in KBRH's post anaesthetic recovery and surgical departments. Other suggested improvements include replacing the 50-year electrical network in the hospital's lower main vault and south block for $647,000; sewer upgrades, $300,000; $95,000 for renovations to the laundry area; and a new ultrasound for diagnostic imaging department. Following the first meeting of 17 new directors on the 30-seat West Kootenay Regional Hospital District (WKRHD) board last week, a $7.7 million list of projects is on the table for the 2015 budget. The hospital district's portion would be just over $3 million (up to 40 per cent) for new construction and equipment costs, recommended by Interior Health (IH) at the board's Jan. 28 meeting in Castlegar. “We are not looking at separate items, we are looking at the whole request,” said Marguerite Rotvold, hospital board chair. “We've given staff direction to bring back, to our February meeting, the tax requisition implications on the amount requested,” she explained. “Once we get the financial impacts to all residents in the region, we will make the decision on it.” The biggest ticket item, and first priority this year, is $3.6 million in upgrades to the emergency power system at Kootenay Lake Hospital. The board would have to approve it's share, or $1.44 million, to add a second generator and replace the electrical distribution system and automatic switch transfer in the Nelson facility. Back-up generators crucial in event of power outage FROM PAGE 1 “Part of this was done last year,” said Rotvold. “But they have to have two generators for back up, not just one, to guarantee safety of patients in case of a power outage.” A further $1 million of new equipment in the $5,000 to $100,000 range is identified under the global grant category for all facilities within the hospital district. The board currently has about $7.8 million in cash reserves, with a statutory cap of $10 million. “It sounds like a lot, but not when you look at the costs of planning for a new facility or the next phases of construction and emergency items,” she said. “If a boiler went in the Trail hospital, for example, we need to have reserve funds to use toward that.” With the lion’s share of budget going toward capital projects in the two larger facilities, Rotvold said the board requested that IH conduct a rural needs assessment for health centres in Kaslo, New Denver, Nakusp, Grand Forks and Castlegar. “We are asking what they (IH) sees as the needs and importance of those rural facilities because most of the money has been going to Trail and Nelson,” she noted. Last year, the board prioritized an upgrade to the Arrow Lakes Hospital emergency department, but IH did not include the project on this year’s list. “The smaller sites provide primary care and stabilizing of patients before they are transferred to the larger centres,” said Rotvold. “We decided to ask IH to help us make decisions pertaining to facilities, because the smaller facilities are a priority.”

Ambassadors eager Rossland to try something Re-zoning required for resort campground new and different By Alicia Wallace
FROM PAGE 1 Oostlander is Miss Knights of Pythias. She’s a Grade 11 student with a passion for sports including basketball, soccer and field hockey, which Oostlander says aren’t the typical traits people equate to a Trail Ambassador competitor. “A lot of people told me I shouldn’t do this program, they think I am too busy,” she explained “But they also see someone who is athletic and don’t think of her as a candidate for Miss Trail. “But I like proving people wrong. So I am going to grow and develop and do something that is different.” Representing Miss Colombo is Grade 11 student Serena Deadmarsh, and she agrees with Oostlander. “It’s good to do something that is not necessarily ‘you,’” she said. “And show that you can go outside of your comfort zone to try something new.”
Rossland News
A new resort campground was a topic of discussion at Rossland council last week. At the regular meeting held on Jan. 26, discussions of bylaw 2581 occurred. The bylaw proposes to advance an amendment to the zoning on a lot located on Red Mountain Road to allow for a resort campground. From this proposal a new zone titled Comprehensive Development Zone Three — Resort Holiday Park, would be created. The existing zoning bylaw does not already include a zone and its definitions for this proposed use. Th bylaw was given its first of three readings. The applicant, B. Wolk, is now required to post a sign stating the intended use for the site within seven days of council’s meeting. The land parcel is 1.8 hectares in

size and would be developed over a six year period to allow for short-term nature based accommodation targeting the mid range traveller. The accommodations will include cabins, campsites and pre-constructed canvas tents. By rezoning this parcel of land from rural residential to one more commercial in nature, the assessed property value would increase and with this generate further tax revenue for the City of Rossland. The zone permits for a density of 20 campsites and 15 tourist cabins per hectare. Cabins are required to be 50 square metres or smaller in size. The proposed zone permits for a maximum of 20 per cent of the land parcel to be covered by buildings or structures including a maximum of one detached family dwelling on site. In order to assist with snow removal operations along Red Mountain Road
the applicant has agreed to a threemetre snow easement on both sides of the road. Wolk arrived at the council meeting after the public input session and although he did not take advantage of this opportunity, he was able to answer some of the elected representatives questions in regards to the development. Once the development permit (DP) is approved Wolk would have two years to substantially begin construction or the DP would expire. The elected officials appeared to believe this additional zone would benefit Rossland’s accommodation mix allowing for additional overnight visitors and increased revenue for the local economy. Councillor Andrew Zwicker was in favour stating “It’s a great project...I am glad to see someone doing it.”

Provincial Kelowna
Hundreds rally against hunting regulations Violent crime THE CANADIAN PRESS KELOWNA, B.C. Street corners were crammed and sidewalks spilled over with hunters who travelled from across B.C. to protest outside Premier Christy Clark’s office in West Kelowna against new quotas they say will choke their access to hunting permits. An estimated 1,200 adults and children, some dressed in camouflage, marched through downtown West Kelowna on Saturday in a peaceful call to arms against a proposed reallocation that gives a larger share of permits to guiding outfitters and their foreign clients. “People are fired up. I have never seen hunters this worked up about an issue ever,” said Sean Richardson, president of the Oceola Fish and Game Club in Lake Country. “We know that if ... we lose this allocation battle, the next thing that’s going to change is regulation. “We’re digging in.” The B.C. Wildlife Federation predicts the changes to B.C.’s harvest-allocation policy could eliminate 5,000 hunting permits for provincial residents. The changes estab-
lish fixed proportions for category A game species, allocating visiting hunters 40 per cent of the annual allowable harvest of grizzly bears, up to 25 per cent of the allowable moose harvest and 35 per cent of the allowable mountain goat harvest. The policy gives more permits to foreigners than ever. Yet resident hunters outnumber the foreign hunters by 102,000 to 4,500 based on last year’s license sales, said Richardson, who helped organize the rally. Brook Mudrie, a father of two in Vernon, says wildlife needs to be protected. “I don’t want to see foreign trophy hunters come in here and pay a fee to take a head, instead of a B.C. family who feeds their family off these animals. “It’s ridiculous.” Forests Minister Steve Thomson, MLA for Kelowna-Mission, argues the current allocation policy has caused some guides to lose business. The changes allow them new opportunities to succeed. The number of resident hunters buying licenses each year has risen 20 per cent in the last dec-

ade while foreignhunter sales have declined by 30 per cent, Richardson said. The guides should be changing their business model, he said, not relying on government to prop up their industry. “It’s coming on the backs of residents. I don’t know that giving more animals to the guides is really going to help their failing business model.” Many guiding outfits are owned by foreign companies, which diverts taxes from Canada. Someone who pays $30,000 to bag a mountain sheep in B.C. typically flies in a private jet to where he’s hunting, harvests the animal and leaves, Richardson said.

More than 500 protesters dropped off personal letters to the premier at her constituency office. “We know she’s got them. She’s going to have to start responding to us,” Richardson said. A n d r e w Farnsworth, 29, drove from Langley with two friends to join the rally. He spent two weeks on a mountaingoat hunt this year in the Kootenays, a week on a mule-deer hunt near Clinton and weekends in the fall going for bear or deer. “It’s important to protect our hunting rights,” he said. “We’re losing them. We’re trying to fight to get them back.” The protest attracted a handful of
unlikely participants. Connie Mahoney of Kelowna and a few friends held antihunting signs as they walked into a crowd of burly hunters. “Hunting would be a sport when the animals have guns too,” she said. “You go out to the wilderness and you see a peaceful deer ... I can’t believe somebody would want to shoot that animal.” Hunter John Anderson told her most people shoot animals for meat, not trophies. “Are you saying all these people should be vegetarians?” he said. “Hunters are conservationists before anything else. We care about the animals.”

THE CANADIAN PRESS SURREY, B.C. - New statistics show that violent crime rose overall in Surrey last year - but the number of murders went down by more than 30 per cent. Surrey RCMP released its fourth-quarter crime statistics this week, revealing that violent crime rose by 7 per cent in 2014 compared to the previous year. Violent crimes include murders, sexual assaults and robberies, and there were 52 per cent more of such crimes in last year’s fourth quarter compared to the same quarter in 2013. But the Vancouver-area city - where reducing crime became a major focus of last fall’s municipal election - saw 17 homicides in 2014, compared to 25 in 2013. Mounties say they continue to target dangerous locations to help reduce homicides, and the majority of murders were domesticrelated or involving those in high-risk lifestyles. Property crime rose 22 per cent in Surrey last year, an increase that RCMP say is occurring across the Lower Mainland and is largely driven by motor vehicle crimes.

Kinder Morgan drops lawsuit against protesters By Wanda Chow
Burnaby News Leader
Kinder Morgan is dropping its lawsuit against several people protesting its recent pipeline study work on Burnaby Mountain, but at least one defendant plans to continue his fight. The company is proposing to almost triple capacity of its Trans Mountain pipeline between Edmonton and Burnaby. In November and December it ran into opposition from protesters as it tried to drill into Burnaby Mountain as part of
geotechnical study work to determine if the pipeline could be routed through it in a tunnel. In response, the company filed a civil lawsuit against five named defendants— Adam Gold, Mia Nissen, Stephen Collis, Lynne Quarmby, and Alan Dutton—seeking damages it estimated at more than $5 million per month of delay. The work went ahead after the company succeeded in getting court injunctions preventing protesters from getting in the
way of its crews. In December, the company said in a press release Friday, Trans Mountain offered to discontinue the lawsuit. “There was no financial incentive offered other than the commitment that Trans Mountain wouldn’t seek court costs. Two of the five defendants agreed.” “In the interest of conciliation, providing certainty for all involved,” the company said, it has filed a unilateral discontinuance which does not require agreement from the defendants.

“It does mean that Trans Mountain could be responsible for court costs, which the company is willing to pay, in order to demonstrate, without any doubt that it has no intention of pursuing civil action in this case.” The move is delivering on a promise made by Kinder Morgan Canada president Ian Anderson not to pursue the lawsuit, the release said. “Even though damages were suffered by the company as a result of the protests that occurred on Burnaby Mountain, Trans Mountain has maintained that it will not pursue compensation for these damages.”
While relieved, defendant Alan Dutton has no plans to go quietly. A few weeks ago he went to B.C. Supreme Court in an attempt to have the lawsuit dismissed but was unsuccessful. “We were expecting them to settle and they’ve done so,” Dutton said Friday. “There’s still some outstanding issues and we have to explore them with my legal team but in my view the issue is not settled.” Dutton said his lawyers will be looking into the matter of recovering his legal costs and being compensated for damage to his reputation and loss of his time dealing with the matter.

NATIONal GRoundhog Day
Forecasters split on winter’s end
THE CANADIAN PRESS WIARTON, Ont. - One of Canada’s celebrity groundhogs predicted a short winter on Monday, as the latest snowstorm blanketed most of Ontario and Quebec before making its way to the Maritimes. A crowd of about 100 people erupted in cheers as Ontario’s Wiarton Willie emerged from his burrow and did not see his shadow, predicting an early spring. Willie seemed nonplussed from being woken from his winter hibernation the day before, and snuggled in a bed of straw in his tiny cube for warmth. In Nova Scotia, meanwhile, Shubenacadie Sam saw his shadow, which according to groundhog folklore means six more weeks of winter. “Given the weather forecast and the amount of snow currently on the ground, Sam’s prediction likely isn’t a surprise to most Nova Scotians,” said Zach Churchill, the province’s natural resources minister. The small town of Wiarton, in southern Ontario, was abuzz with Willie’s news of an early spring, which went against the forecast of both Sam and Pennsylvania’s Punxsutawney Phil, both predicting six more weeks of winter. “I think the other two don’t know what they’re talking about,” said Wiarton Mayor Janice Jackson, who leaned in to “listen” to Willie before screaming “It’s an early spring!” to the crowd. The rowdy group didn’t wait around long as many scurried off to their cars to get out of the -16C weather and gusty winds. Last year, only Willie was correct when he spotted his shadow. Neither Shubenacadie Sam nor the lesserknown Winnipeg Willow saw theirs, thereby forecasting an early spring. They were wrong. A polar vortex plunged Canada into a brutal winter that dragged on and on. Environment Canada has already crunched the data for the next month and come up with this prediction: February will be colder than normal across the country. Senior climatologist Dave Phillips noted Wiarton Willie’s overall record is spotty, but says predicting the weather is a tough gig. “His batting average is not that great... but hey, neither is ours.”

Duelling bills revive census debate THE CANADIAN PRESS OTTAWA - A pair of duelling bills is putting the debate over the census and the work of Statistics Canada back on the floor of the House of Commons. A Conservative and a Liberal MP each has a private member’s bill going through the legislative process, attempting to address controversies surrounding the census. Liberal MP Ted Hsu’s bill, which would bring back the long-form census and bolster the independence of the chief statistician, is scheduled for a second-reading vote this week. But it’s Conservative MP Joe Preston’s bid to remove the threat of jail times on all Statistics Canada surveys, including the mandatory short-form census, that has the greatest likelihood of becoming law. Some Conservatives began signalling last week in the Commons that they were prepared to support Preston’s bill, which won’t get its first round of debate until about March. Preston says his bill is very simple: nobody should be threatened with jail if they don’t fill out a survey. The fines attached to those who don’t comply with the Statistics Canada requests would remain intact. “I come from an area where volunteerism is rampant, and it’s not hard to get

people to do things when they’re asked to,” said Preston. “Occasionally somebody wants to stand up and say, ‘I’m not doing that.’ Well OK. There’s other remedies, but the answer here is, we’ve had a pretty good opportunity to get the information out of people.” Preston’s bill would also put an end to the automatic release of personal census data to the public after 92 years. People will have to give their express consent for the future release at the time they fill out the forms. With the Conservative majority in the House, it’s unlikely that Hsu’s attempt to reverse the government’s 2009 decision to axe the mandatory long-form census will survive the session. Hsu has offered to accept amendments,
such as abandoning a measure that would give the chief statistician ultimate control over the census questions. Like Preston’s, Hsu’s bill would also remove the threat of jail times in the Statistics Act. But Conservatives in the Commons said last week they were opposed to the core principles of the bill. “The proposed changes to the bill will legally compel Canadians to answer these intrusive questions,” said Conservative MP John Carmichael. “This government has already taken numerous steps to ensure that we collect necessary, reliable data, while reducing the undue burden on Canadians and protecting their privacy.” Many groups including the Canadian Chamber of Commerce, municipalities and religious groups have backed the return of the longform census, saying the information is needed for important public-policy decision making and civic plan-

back many decades. Hsu said filling out the census forms is a civic duty, just as Canadians have a duty to pay their income taxes. “The fight over this bill is a fight over the soul of this country,” Hsu told MPs last week. “It is a fight over whether Canadians should collect information about ourselves so that we may have solid evidence with which to govern ourselves wisely.” Hsu’s bill would also put the selection of the chief statistician in the hands of a selection committee. The government would need to consult the leaders of all the parties in the Commons before naming a person to the job.

Statistics Canada withheld information on thousands of smaller Canadian communities because the information was unreliable. The census tract of Elgin, in Preston’s southwestern Ontario riding, had a nonresponse rate of 26.1 per cent for the National Household Survey. Critics say the problems with the data are compounded by the fact that the survey results cannot be compared with the results from the mandatory censuses going

Teachers adapting, but not their union
T
he B.C. education ministry put on a forum on the future of education last week, bringing together public and private school leaders with experts from around the world. I watched the proceedings via webcast from the Wosk Centre for Dialogue in Vancouver, which gives you a hint about the forces pressing in on our century-old industrial model of schooling. First up was Andreas Schleicher, on video link from his office in Paris, where he is director of education and skills for the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. He began with the international problem of people coming out of university who can’t find jobs, amid a skills shortage. Schleicher said this is happening today because, “it’s not what you know but what you can do with what you know.”
Some education systems are adapting better than others as the value of merely passing on facts has declined. He said these days, almost any student can pass any multiple-choice test if they have a smartphone. The question for parents is what to do “if you want your child to be smarter than a smartphone.” The OECD runs international testing that consistently ranks B.C. and Canada among the best schools in the world, and Schleicher described how that testing has evolved to keep up. But our progress in the past 10 years has tended to be slower than some Asian countries, despite B.C. being on the “high end of investment” in education. He warned against the trap of the industrial school model, “pouring money in” to “do more of the same.” Some of the best results emerging from a decade of digitally-driven

globalization have been achieved through innovations that were financed through bigger class sizes, Schleicher said. This was too much for one B.C. Teachers’ Federation representative in the audience, who introduced herself as someone who spent the last transformational decade working for the union, not in a classroom. She disputed the OECD’s financial calculations, lecturing some of the world’s top economists that based on “spending power,” B.C. schools are cash starved. She followed this with
the laundry list of BCTF demands that hasn’t changed in 40 years – smaller classes, more prep time, more money. The keynote speaker was Yong Zhao, University of Oregon professor of educational measurement, who gave a highly entertaining critique of standardized testing and creativity-crushing drills of the basics. (You can find a video archive at www.bcedplan.ca.) Yong sparked a lively discussion about the need for foundation skills, which he and others agreed remain vital to success. The issue seems to be how to instil those basics while avoiding the disengagement of students who see school as irrelevant to their lives. Education Minister Peter Fassbender announced at the forum that the province is about to unveil new curriculum that moves toward individual learning for all students. And he said
there will be a series of experiments conducted at yet-to-be-identified B.C. schools to pioneer new models of learning. BCTF president Jim Iker sat stoically through the proceedings, where speakers described integrating community groups and businesses directly with schools. That’s underway here, with trades training in particular. Iker’s record on adaptation is clear from his own career. The only school where he actually taught was in the northwest B.C. village of Topley, and it closed in 2010 due to a long-term decline in rural students. By 2001 Iker had left the classroom to work for the Burns Lake teacher union local, which the BCTF continues to staff eight years after that school district and others disappeared through amalgamation. Canadian film nets award
THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - A Canadian documentary about the early days of Greenpeace has snagged two prizes at the Sundance Film Festival. Saskatoon film editor Jim Scott earned the world cinema documentary editing award for his work on “How to Change the World.” The film also claimed the Candescent Award, a prize that recognizes social-issue films. Written and directed by Jerry Rothwell, “How to Change the World” traces the organization’s origins to a group of Vancouver neighbours who united to protest atomic bomb tests in Alaska.

manufacturing sector has shed plants and infrastructure and hundreds of thousands of jobs, particularly in Ontario. Think of the GM plant closure in Windsor, Heinz in Leamington, Kellogg’s in London, Sterling Truck in St. Thomas or the many northern Ontario pulp mills that have closed. There will be a substantial lag in getting new production started up again, given that many plants have shut their doors for good. Moreover, the great benefit to central Canadian manufacturing and employment from servicing the western resource sector has been underestimated. The slowdown in the oil and gas industry will have an impact on thousands of workers who currently commute west from central and Atlantic Canada. As for a drop in interest rates stimulating the economy, one wonders how much more effective low interest rates can be given that they have been at historically low levels for years now. Low interest rates may undermine the economy’s long run health if they merely encourage governments and households to take on even more debt. Since 2010, the household debt to GDP ratio for the hard hit U.S. has dropped to 80 per cent while more prosperous Canada’s has remained above 90 per cent. We have not used the last few years of prosperity to put our economic house in order, preferring instead to coast on debt and the bounty of a resource boom. When comparing our current slowdown with the last recession, the indications are that we may be in for a much bumpier ride. Troy Media contributor Livio Di Matteo is Professor of Economics at Lakehead University.
Ottawa knew about youth jobs crisis
An editorial from the Hamilton Spectator There is no disputing that Canada’s youth unemployment crisis is real. The jobless rate is unacceptably high for adult workers, but the rate for young workers is twice as high, and sits stuck in double digits. So it’s galling to learn that the federal government was warned as early as 2013 that the controversial temporary foreign workers program was a part of the problem. Specifically, a briefing given to Employment Minister Jason Kenney in August of that year warned that industries that typically employ young Canadians are also among the employers hiring the highest number
of temporary foreign workers. And that briefing didn’t come from a partisan or opposition source. It was Kenney’s own staff sounding the alarm. In spite of that, it took a year to make reforms to the program, and it’s arguable whether they have gone far enough to protect Canadian workers. Why did it take Kenney’s ministry so long to act on a problem it was warned about by its own staff? How much damage was done by the delay? The government should be helping create jobs, not reducing them.

Brent Butt
‘Corner Gas’ star coming to Nelson The Nelson Star The creator and star of the wildly popular television sitcom, Corner Gas, is coming to Nelson. Audiences will get a chance to see and hear Brent Butt up close and personal when he takes his stand-up act on the road next May. That includes a stop at Nelson’s Capitol Theatre on May 13 at 7:30 p.m. Butt became known in Canada for his clean and relaxed comedic style, and after several TV specials, he created Corner Gas in 2004, and starred in the role of Brent Leroy. The series was an instant hit for CTV, becoming the top sitcom on Canadian television and eventually aired in 26 countries. The final season for the show was 2009, but the show continues to maintain its popularity
today, with constant reruns on the Comedy Network and CTV. Corner Gas received Gemini awards, Canadian Comedy awards, Director’s Guild awards, Leo awards and was voted the Funniest Show on TV, by TV Guide readers. This past Christmas, Corner Gas: The Movie hit the big screen. It was originally given a limited run in select cities, but became so popular with fans that it was given a longer run with additional cities added to its distribution. In an uncommon move, the return to Dog River with its beloved cast, also made its network broadcast debut on the Movie Network, CTV and the Comedy Network in the same month as its theatrical release. Butt was born and

Meinig chose the three charities based on a number of things. He chose the Cranbrook Homeless Shelter to help women and the homeless. He chose the Good Samaritan because he was looking for a Christian organization helping the community. “Then you know the Good Samaritan, they do a lot of stuff helping seniors and the developmentally disabled,” he said. “They build hospitals and all sorts of general community functions and things like that.” He also chose the Children’s Wish Foundation as the third charity. “I had friends whose kids have had leukaemia... and the Children’s Wish Foundation, you know they are amazing what they for kids, and put smiles on their faces.” Meinig wanted to do something in the winter time, because he enjoys climbing in the snow and snowshoeing.

“I needed a place where I could drive up to it and hike from there,” he said. “I don’t have a 4X4 or anything like that.” He has a friend in Canmore and so looked around there and found three mountains that met his criteria. The total elevation for the three days of climbing will be about 3,000 metres. “Each one is almost 1,000 metres,” he said. “So nothing death defying — I didn’t want to take any risks because I have family and kids. I wanted it fairly safe, but a challenge physical-wise, to climb that much in three days in a row at my age could be tough.” He will be climbing with his Canmore friend. “It will just be the two of us,” he said. The climbs will take place in March. “Hopefully there will be snow still in the mountains,” he said. Check out Meinig’s website chronicling the days up to the event: www.3for3.net.

Smokies beat Vees in dramatic OT win BY JIM BAILEY
Times Sports Editor
After dropping the first game of a home-and-home against the Penticton Vees 4-3 Friday, the Trail Smoke Eaters completed the most improbable and incredible of all comebacks with a 3-2 double-overtime victory over the Vees on Saturday in front of their home Cominco crowd. The Smokies trailed 2-0 early in the third, but would battle back with Trail captain Jake Lucchini scoring with 3.6 seconds remaining in regulation to tie it, then ripped his 25th goal of the season late in the second overtime period for the 3-2 victory. “It’s huge,” said Smoke Eater assistant coach Barry Zanier. “It’s how we’ve been playing since Christmas pretty much and for them to get that outcome based on that effort is fantastic.” It was the first win for the Smokies over the league-leading Vees this season, and what’s more amazing is that they did it with seven regulars out of the line up. Trail lost Charlie Zuccarini for the rest of the season to a suspension, had goalies Adam Todd and Brett Clark out with illness, Robbie Johnson, Evan MacEachern, and Bryans Gerstenfeld and Basilico on the sideline with injury, so the chance of a Trail victory on Saturday seemed remote. But a combination of great goaltending from AP Patrick Zubick of the KIJHL Castlegar Rebels and a solid defensive effort limited a balanced Penticton attack to just two goals on the night. “Last night and tonight he (Zubick) was on fire,” said Zanier. “He was focused, he was relaxed, and just a real quiet confidence about him. He got a win here and that was great.”
Smoke Eater forward Dallas Calvin set up the winning goal. As he skated over the Vees blue line, he drew the defenseman, then slid a perfect pass to a streaking Jake Lucchini down the right side, who, on his off-wing, one-timed the puck over the glove of Penticton goalie Hunter Miska with 1:16 remaining in the second 3-on-3 overtime period.
“We ended up getting a 3-on-1 and Dallas just made a nice pass, and I wasn’t really thinking anything, just shot the puck and see what happens and it ended up going in,” said Lucchini. “This is huge, they are probably the best team in Canada, and we had two games against them and losing 4-3, we played really well, then tonight was just great, in front of our home fans, everyone is really excited.” Penticton opened the scoring at 3:29 of the first when 16-year-old Tyson Jost walked out from behind the net and
slipped it past Zubick. The Smokies came close on a few occasions, but two posts and big saves by the BCHL’s top goalie thwarted the home team’s attack. A scoreless second period was highlighted by a lively encounter between the Smokies Sheldon Brett and Penticton defenceman and former WHLer Shayne Gwinner, but the score remained 1-0 through two, with the Vees taking a 23-21 edge in shots. The Vees would make it 2-0 just 35 seconds into the third when Patrick Newell snapped a cross-ice pass from Dakota Conroy past a sprawling Zubick. But Trail would get on the board when Cooper Leitch stole the puck and wired a wrister from the top of the circle by Miska to make it 2-1 with 17:56 to play. The Smokies poured it on in the third period but it looked like Miska would weather the storm as he absolutely robbed Lucchini of a sure goal when Calvin sent a cross-crease pass to the Trail captain, but Miska slid across and made a great pad save with two minutes to play. Moments later, the Vees goalie stole a point-blank shot from Harlan Orr, as Trail fired 15 shots at the Vees net in the period. But it wasn’t over. With just 23 seconds to play the referee made a decision to keep the faceoff in the Vees end after a Smokies defenceman encroached into the offensive zone following the whistle. As time ticked away, Trail swarmed the Penticton goal, banging away at the puck until it slid out to Lucchini in the high slot. With bodies flying and just seconds remaining, Lucchini calmly waited for an opening then fired it high on Miska to tie it with 3.6 seconds left on the clock. See PLAYERS, Page 12
BY TIMES STAFFF Johnny Marzec’s power-play goal at 3:37 of the second period proved to be the winner as the Spokane Braves outlasted the Beaver Valley Nitehawks 3-2 in KIJHL action on Friday night. Marzec’s tally would give the Braves a 3-1 lead despite almost complete dominance by the Nitehawks over the first two periods, where B.V. outshot Spokane 32-13 but trailed 3-1 heading into the third. Tyler Wilkerson opened the scoring for Spokane when his long-distance icing shot bounced off the stanchion and into the Hawks empty goal, after goalie Drake Poirier anticipated playing the puck behind the net. Sean Collins would make it 2-0 Braves at the 9:10 mark, before the Nitehawks Spencer McLean cut the lead in half with his 15th goal of the season at 15:37 of the second period. With Poirier on the bench for the extra attacker, Taylor Stafford would send a Ross Armour pass by Braves goalie Trevor Dilauro for the Hawks with 35 seconds left in regulation. But it was as close as B.V. would get outshooting the Braves 46-20 and going 0-for-2 on the power play while Spokane scored twice on three opportunities. Beaver Valley’s next game goes tonight at the Beaver Valley Arena when they host the Nelson Leafs at 7 p.m.
League suspends Trail’s top scorer
BY TIMES STAFF The Trail Smoke Eaters leading goal scorer, Charlie Zuccarini, is gone for the season. The BCHL came down hard on the 20-year-old Trail forward after receiving a match penalty for abuse of an official in a game against the Coquitlam Express last week in Coquitlam. Video shows a frustrated Zuccarini making contact with the arm of referee Kirk Wood with his stick, after the referee got in the way of Zuccarini while making a play. The Connecticut import was one of Trail’s most dynamic players this season, netting 27 goals and 30 assists in 45 games, good for seventh in league scoring. “It is a big blow to
our organization to lose a player like Charlie for the remainder of the season,” said Smoke Eater coach and GM Nick Deschenes in a release. “I can’t comment on the severity of the suspension only to say that any physical abuse of officials in the BCHL is not tolerated. Hockey is a fast and intense game and in the heat of the moment players do things they regret. I believe this is one of those situations.” In a hearing with BCHL officials, Zuccarini, and representatives of the Trail Smoke Eaters on Wednesday, league president John Grisdale said the abuse of an official, whether verbal or physical, is unacceptable and not tolerated in the BCHL.

First Tour victory for Koepka Seahawks ‘stick together’ THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - With an eagle putt that looked as long as his golf journey around the world, Brooks Koepka surged into the lead and stayed there Sunday with a 5-under 66 to capture the Phoenix Open for his first PGA Tour victory. Lingering for most of the final round, Koepka holed a 50-foot eagle putt from the fringe on the 15th hole and didn’t make any mistakes the rest of the way. The victory ended
a long, arduous road for the 24-year-old from Florida. With no status in America, Koepka played the Challenge Tour in faraway lands like Kazakhstan and Kenya, winning four times to earn his European Tour card and then validating his status as a rising star by winning the Turkish Open last year. But winning at home brought the strongest validation. “It feels amazing,” Koepka said after his one-shot win over
Hideki Matsuyama, Masters champion Bubba Watson and Ryan Palmer. Graham DeLaet was the top Canadian in the tournament, coming into the clubhouse four strokes behind Koepka. The Weyburn, Sask. native shot a 4-under 67 in the final round to finish in a tie for 7th spot. Nick Taylor, from Abbotsford, B.C., and Victoria’s Cory Renfrew tied for 59th position at 1-under for the tournament. Taylor shot a
70 on the final day while Renfrew shot a 5-under 66- his best round of the week. Mike Weir, from Brights Grove, Ont., and David Hearn, of Brantford, Ont., didn’t make it to the weekend after missing the cut. Of the five players who had a share of the lead in a wild final hour at the TPC Scottsdale, Matsuyama had the last chance to catch Koepka until his 18-foot birdie putt on the final hole missed well to the right.
Players’ hard work pays off
FROM PAGE 11 “I didn’t know how much time was left,” said Lucchini. “Everyone was telling me to shoot but I just kind of waited, and pulled it back to try and wait him out, because everyone was diving in front, and I just shot it and it ended up going in.” The Vees had their chances in the first and second overtimes, firing six shots at Zubick who made a couple of gamesavers in OT to give the Smokies a chance to win. The overtime goal was Lucchini’s 59th point of the season, good for first-star honours, while Calvin had two assists. Zubick was named the game’s second star, while Miska was third star for the Vees as Trail outshot Penticton 38-37. “You have to give them (Trail) a lot of credit,” said Penticton head coach Fred Harbinson.
“It was a tough weekend for us, but you’ve got to give the team over there, with the number of guys they had out, you’ve got to give them a heck of a lot credit for fighting and it was good to see on their part.” In Friday’s match, Trail took a 2-1 first period lead on goals from Craig Martin and Kienan Scott, but three second period tallies from Jost, Mitch Newsome, and Conroy would give the Vees a 4-2 lead. Scott would bring the Smokies within one with under four minutes remaining with his second of the night and 11th on the season, but Miska shut the door after that stopping 25 Trail shots while Zubick blocked 32 on the night for Trail, with both teams going 0-for-3 on the power play. The OT victory against the Canadian Junior Hockey
League’s fourth ranked team in the nation Saturday was a great win for a shorthanded Smoke Eaters team, and although there is only 11 games remaining and all but out of playoff contention, the players refuse to quit. “They are playing for themselves right now, they are playing for spots for next year, and spots down the road at the next level,” said Zanier. “They are playing for pride at this time, and it’s great to see the fans so excited in this building and that’s our goal for the rest of the year, to make sure the fans come here and they are entertained, and tonight they were certainly entertained.” Trail travels to Merritt to play the Centennials on Wednesday, before returning to the Cominco Arena for a pair of games on the weekend versus Merritt and Surrey.

after tough Super Bowl loss
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS GLENDALE, Ariz. In the silence of the locker room, Byron Maxwell was already addressing the most important challenge Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks will face going forward. One play on Sunday night changed the story for the Seattle Seahawks. Instead of becoming the first repeat champions in a decade and having the chance to be the next NFL dynasty, the question now is whether the Seahawks can avoid becoming a fractured team because of what happened. “Like I said earlier, we have to stick together,” Maxwell said. “That’s the most important thing right now.” The fallout from Seattle’s 28-24 loss is only beginning and the game will be debated until the 2015 regular season begins. Facing second-and-goal at the New England 1 with less than 30 seconds remaining, the Seahawks opted for a slant pass from Russell Wilson to Ricardo Lockette, which was intercepted by Malcolm Butler, instead of handing off to Marshawn Lynch. It was a puzzling decision to call for a
pass play in the situation. In the immediate aftermath, it was already being considered one of the worst play calls in Super Bowl history. Some Seahawks players were openly questioning why the ball wasn’t handed to Lynch. And that’s what Carroll will have to confront, to make certain what happened does not shatter what the Seahawks have built. They will still be young and fiery and talented when next season begins. But they’ll also have this game hanging over them. “I’m not sure it does much to our legacy,” cornerback Richard Sherman said. “I think we’ve got a bunch of fourth- and fifth-year guys and we’ll have a chance to, through God’s grace, get back here and have another chance at it.” Seattle was on the cusp of pulling out one of the great Super Bowl victories. They were resilient in the first half, capped by their 31-second touchdown drive at the end of the first half to pull even at 14-14. They dominated the third quarter while building a 10-point lead. And even after watching Tom Brady

pick apart Seattle’s defence in the fourth quarter and rally for two touchdowns, Wilson led one final drive to put the Seahawks on the doorstep of an amazing rally, including Jermaine Kearse’s remarkable juggling catch that is now an afterthought. It was everything Carroll has tried to build in Seattle, a team that, as Bill Belichick said earlier in the week, will “play for 60 minutes.” “It was us. It felt like it was meant to be after Kearse caught that ball,” Seattle linebacker Bruce Irvin said. “It was like it was meant to be and we couldn’t finish it.” There’s no reason to think Seattle can’t put itself in position to be playing for another championship next season due to the continuity of its defence. Most of the important pieces are locked up at least through the 2016 season, including three members of the “Legion of Boom” secondary: Sherman, Earl Thomas and Kam Chancellor. Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril and K.J. Wright are also taken care of long-term. Bobby Wagner will be in line for an extension this off-season as well. Aside from trying to shake the sting of what happened, who the Seahawks want to be going forward will be defined. Wilson will get paid this off-season, likely with one of the largest contracts ever for a quarterback. But what does Seattle do with Lynch? He was the hottest name of the Super Bowl for his antics and remains one of the most respected players in the locker room. He’ll be 29 when next season starts with a history of a balky back and a cap hit of $8.5 million for the final year of his deal. “It’s a similar situation to last year,” Carroll said. “Everybody has difficult decisions you have to make this time of year. They’ll come up in time. How we’ll make it back is one day at a time. One day at a time.”

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - “American Sniper” has shot down another box-office record: Its $31.9 million is the biggest Super Bowl weekend gross ever. Hollywood often avoids competing with the Super Bowl, but “American Sniper” has proven an unlikely sensation. It has now made $248.9 million in six weeks, making it the most lucrative war movie without adjusting for inflation. The competition was thin. The animated adaptation “Paddington” came in a distant second with $8.5 million, in a virtual tie with Paramount’s found-footage thriller “Project Almanac.” Kevin Costner’s “Black or White” opened in fourth with $6.5 million.

TVs tuned in to Super Bowl THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - An estimated 114.4 million people watched New England’s thrilling win over Seattle, making it the fifth time in six years that a Super Bowl game has set a record as the most-watched event in U.S. television history. The game also set records for social media reach. A stirring comeback by New England and game-saving interception in the final minute kept viewers glued to the set. Facebook said an estimated 65 million people conversed about the game on the social media site, more than any other Super Bowl and second only to two World Cup games last year for most talked-about events. Twitter estimated there were 28.4 million tweets posted between the kickoff and 30 minutes after the game’s conclusion.

Seek out support from LGBT organizations Mailbox
Marcy Sugar & Kathy Mitchell
There seems to be no place in the LGBT community for my situation. My peers have told me that I am gay. Others say I will never find someone to love unless I become more “feminine.” All of this indicates that my personality doesn’t matter. I have done extensive therapy for bipolar disorder in the past, but it hasn’t been helpful. One therapist actually told me my aversion to dresses means I had been sexually abused, even if I have no recollection of it. I am on medication for bipolar disorder, but only recently have I admitted to myself that the root of my
breasts have very different vein patterns. My boyfriend says the veins should be symmetrical or nearly so. (My left breast is larger, but I don’t see how that would affect the veins.) What should I do? -- Both Sides Now Dear Both: According to our medical experts, there is no reason to be overly concerned. As one physician put it, “Breasts are sisters, not twins,” meaning the size and vein patterns aren’t symmetrical. Instead of letting your boyfriend diagnose you, please talk to your doctor about this. Dear Annie: My heart went out to “Desperate for Answers,” who said her parents compared her to her sibling, and she came up short. In junior high, I felt inferior to my siblings because they got good grades, but no matter how much time I spent on my homework, my grades were
never as good. I rarely saw them working at all, and here I was, trying so hard. Years later, I discovered I was dyslexic, and reading was complicated and difficult for me. Also, when I was in the 9th grade, an observant science teacher told my
parents I needed glasses. I thought everyone saw things the same way I did. I was shocked when I walked out of the optometrist’s office. “Desperate” should have her eyes checked and also see whether there are any hidden learning disabilities.
It was too late for me when I made my discovery, but hopefully, it won’t be too late for her. -- Been There, Done That Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers

problem is probably my gender dysphoria. I wake up every morning disappointed that I am still trapped. Are there any resources for my specific dilemma? -- Forever Trapped Dear Forever: We are sorry you have had so much difficulty finding support. There are several organizations that help the LGBT community. We also know that many surgical outcomes for transitioning female to male have been successful. You can find resources and information through The Community of LGBT Centers (LGBTCenters. org), the Human Rights Campaign (hrc. org) and PFLAG (pflag. org), as well as GLAAD. org, femaletomale.org, ftmguide.org and the GLBT National Help Center (glbtnationalhelpcenter.org). 2015 Conceptis Puzzles, Dist. by King Features Syndicate, Inc.
Dear Annie: I’ve lived my entire life feeling as though I was born the wrong gender. Transitioning is not an option. I was born female and look it. I would have a hard time passing as male. Also, I have heard nothing but horror stories regarding the surgery. There appears to be resources galore for those changing from male to female, but everything I’ve read about my situation seems to assume I must be a lesbian. This is not the case. I am attracted to men. If I transitioned to male, I would be a gay man. I’m not really sure what to call myself. Because I will not be transitioning, “transgender” doesn’t fit, and “transvestite” doesn’t cover it. I realize I am still a female, but I feel humiliated wearing dresses and skirts. I don’t find anything sexy about women’s clothing, as a transvestite might.

YourByhoroscope Francis Drake For Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2015 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) This is a loosey-goosey day; however, for your sign, it’s a wonderfully creative day! Trust your artistic urges. Enjoy playful activities with children. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) This is an excellent day to hang out with family and just take it easy. Don’t shop for anything other than food or gas. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Writers will find that their creative abilities are topnotch today. It’s easy to think outside of the box or to access imaginary ideas. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) This is a poor day for major expenditures. Spend money only on food or gas. Whatever you initiate today will tend not to fulfill your objective. LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22)
Tuesday, February 3, 2015 Trail Times
Don’t worry if you feel indecisive and at loose ends today, because this is just par for the course. Many people feel this way today. The good news is that it is a creative day, because it’s easy to think outside of the box. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) This is a perfect day to hide somewhere and just relax, if you can swing it. Solitude in beautiful surroundings will appeal to you. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) You will enjoy schmoozing with others today, especially close friends. If involved with groups, don’t volunteer for anything. Not today. Just go with the flow. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) Avoid important discussions with authority figures today, because they will really be pointless. Furthermore, avoid making important decisions. Don’t agree to anything important, because it will only have to be changed.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) This is a playful day. Ideally, you want to run away and join the circus or get away from all this. Go somewhere you’ve never been before to satisfy your hunger for adventure and new learning. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Be careful because, in one way, you are focused on financial matters today.
However, this is a poor day for important decisions and expenditures! AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Enjoy social occasions, especially with partners and close friends. Conversations will be lighthearted and friendly. In this respect, it’s an easygoing day. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) At work you might suffer from shortages and delays.
It feels as if your efficiency is shot. Don’t worry; everyone feels this way today. Mistakes, errors and shortages are everywhere. YOU BORN TODAY You have an unusual way of doing things, and you are successful about achieving long-term goals. You have abundant energy, and you like your hobbies. Good news! This is a year of accumulation, and perhaps one of the most powerful years of

Dance off
Sheri Regnier photo
Steps Dance Company and Got Juiced hosted a fundraiser this weekend, for the dancers' upcoming trip to California and for the AkuaPuali Homestead Society. Led by members of the dance troupe, the event highlighted the off-ice fancy footwork of the Trail Smoke Eaters and the Beaver Valley Nitehawks. While both teams had some impressive moves, crowd consensus was that the Smokies were the clear victors, and Ryan Swanson (right), the MVP.
