Fuller’s condition improves Nanaimo Coun. Gord Fuller, who suffered a massive heart attack Sunday, has shown small improvement but still faces a long battle, according to his sister-in-law Bev Fuller. Gord Fuller has been in intensive care at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital since the heart attack. He was on life support and under sedation early Monday, but by Wednesday Bev Fuller reported there was a small improvement and guarded optimism about his condition, although she said he still has a long hill to climb. “Thank you to everybody for giving him space and quiet to recover,” she said. Mayor Bill McKay said he heard Fuller opened his eyes on Tuesday and started to move with purpose, which he called great news. “He’s a long way from being out of the woods, there’s no doubt about it,” said McKay. But considering the traumatic experience Fuller’s body has been through, he called the progress “really encouraging.”

Mayor seeks assurances on 911 contract

I

NEARLY ONE year after decision, agreement still in negotiation with RCMP, municipal partners. BY TAMARA CUNNINGHAM THE NEWS BULLETIN

CHRIS BUSH/THE NEWS BULLETIN

Library pops for literacy

Brenna Sherlock, also known as Beebop the Clown, left, brushes a facial masterpiece on Dariya Lancaster while Riley Paugh passes the time with a lollipop at Vancouver Island Regional Library’s Nanaimo Harbourfront branch. Face painting, storytelling, bookmark making and music were part the activities scheduled for children and families during Family Literacy Day Tuesday.

Nanaimo mayor Bill McKay wants assurances the Central Island 911 Partnership is all-in as a new 911 contract with the RCMP inches toward completion. Nanaimo city council opted last February to sign a five-year memorandum of understanding with the RCMP to provide 911 services. The agreement would cost the Central Island 911 Partnership, made up of Nanaimo, Cowichan Valley Regional District and the Regional District of Nanaimo, $745,000 with City of Nanaimo footing 45 per cent of the bill. Nearly a year after the decision, however, the agreement is still in negotiation with the RCMP, local governments have a difference in interpretation on the terms and McKay is looking for assurances the CVRD won’t back out of the agreement early on. According to the mayor, individual directors have indicated they want to look again at the provision of 911 service and the partner seems “undecided.” “I would like to see our city manager have a conversation with the Cowichan Valley folks to determine where they are going and whether or not they are intending to sign off and then give us one year’s notice to leave,” McKay said. “That doesn’t make any sense to me. Why don’t you just give us notice now?” Nanaimo is supporting 45 per cent of the cost of the agreement or $335,250, as part of the three-way partnership, but if the CVRD opts out of the agreement, the mayor says the Harbour City could be left with 90 per cent of the bill. Inbrief School mural draws on students’ passions city scene

Political talk continues Seasoned female politicians and federal candidates are converging in the Harbour City this Sunday in a push to keep up talk about women in politics. The non-partisan Women and Politics group is hosting its first 2015 event Sunday (Feb.1), with seven guest speakers from across the province, including Green Party leader Elizabeth May and Jody Wilson-Raybould, regional chief of the B.C. Assembly of First Nations and federal Liberal candidate for the Vancouver-Granville riding. SpArK hElpS keep kids excited about their futures. By Karl yu THE NEWS BuLLETIN

As Angela Jurgensen graduates from Vancouver Island University’s postbaccalaureate teacher training program this week, it is fitting that Jean Kloppenburg will also be receiving her master’s degree in education. Kloppenburg, a teacher at Woodlands Secondary School, served as a sponsor for Jurgensen. Together with more than 160 students from Grade 9-12, they collaborated on a 168-square-foot mural embodying students’ sparks of passion. It took two years and was Jurgensen’s major practicum project. Students painted their passions on tiles, which were combined to make a mural of the school mascot, an eagle. The idea was inspired by the Kunamokst mural mosaic on Galiano Island. RCMP Cpl. Dave Cusson and the Drug and Organized Crime Awareness Service included the spark concept as part of a presentation Cusson made at the school.

KARL YU/The News BULLeTiN

Sophie McAuliffe, left, Angela Jurgensen, student teacher, Jean Kloppenburg, teacher, and Charlotte Zhang stand beside Woodlands Secondary School’s sparks mural. The project involved work from over 160 students, including McAuliffe and Zhang, and involved them identifying a spark, or passion, of theirs. The mural will be unveiled sometime in March.

“They found that having a spark is what really keeps kids excited about their future,” said Kloppenburg. “Positive things in their life and finding out what that spark is is a major part of keeping them in school and being successful people to work towards it.” Sparks consisted of a lot of art and sports-related tiles as well as

ones detailing future professions. Kloppenburg said Jurgensen did the bulk of the work. “I had 60 arts students this term that completed tiles and Angela was here a lot, just making sure students were putting in and she drew the whole image, made sure it all fit together, did the colour palettes.

“I had a colour theory we talked about using, so we collaborated on a lot but I would probably give her 100 per cent of the hard work,” said Kloppenburg. “I came to the kids ... and I asked them, what do you guys think should be outside your school? And they came up with a lot of different sketches and ideas,” Jurgensen said. “I got home with those ideas and saw there was a theme of eagles flying and also a lot of the northwest. “Pictures of arbutus, a lot of mountains, a lot of islands, so I just started putting some ideas together, sketches something, brought it to them and they liked it and it became our drawing.” For more information on the mural, please go to www. sparksmural.com. Jurgensen and Kloppenburg are two of 650 students who will graduate from Vancouver Island University today and tomorrow (Jan. 29-30) at 2:30 p.m. Convocation ceremonies at the Port Theatre will also feature installation of a new chancellor as Louise Mandell and presentation of an honorary doctorate of science to Crawford “Buzz” Holling, for his work managing natural resources. Work on hold while council sorts out committee appointments By Tamara Cunningham THE NEWS BuLLETIN

The work of several city committees is on hold with no decisions made yet about the future of the advisory groups. Committee meetings have been cancelled this January in the wake of no council appointments or enough sitting members, including the Parks, Recreation and Culture Commission and Advisory Committee on Environ-

mental Sustainability. Political appointments to committees have been previously announced after the general election, but Mayor Bill McKay hasn’t assigned any responsibilities other than to the regional district and library boards and has pledged a review into the need and effectiveness of Nanaimo’s advisory groups. The review hasn’t yet happened and city environmental planner Rob Lawrance, also with

“GO FOR THE BEST”

the environmental sustainability group, said they are waiting for it to be finished so they can find out the make-up of the committees and who the sitting members will be. While the topic has been on several agendas, McKay says they haven’t gotten to it yet. With five new councillors, there are lots of questions and discussions in special Committee of the Whole meetings are taking longer, he said, adding he believes

committee structure is next in the queue. “Postponing the committee meetings, it’s unfortunate that we haven’t gotten that far yet, but I just want to make sure we get what we want at the end of the day,” said McKay, who’d like to see broader discussion and fewer committees. There are 19 city committees and 11 external boards, plus legislated and liaison appointments. news@nanaimobulletin.com

CVRD commits to one year From /1

T h e a g re e m e n t , intended to be for five years, allows partners to opt out with 12 months’ written notice. “If they abandon this, we’re in trouble,” McKay said, pointing out the city would pay more than if it had gone to a provider like Vancouver-based E-Comm, which had planned to charge the partnership $280,000. Jon Lefebure, chairman of the CVRD, said the district has agreed to sign the memo, which commits them – and its other part-

ners – for one year, as well as hire a consultant to review options over the longer term, including E-Comm. “I just talked to my staff member and she said we’ve agreed to sign the MOU for one year so maybe that’s what the new mayor of Nanaimo wants is to sign the five-year deal but my understanding from staff is that’s not what we agreed to do,” he said. B.C. communities like Nanaimo reconsidered the delivery of 911 services last year after the RCMP ser ved notice the

function was no longer part of its core business and would require a five-year contract and management fee to continue. Nanaimo considered the call-answer service E-Comm, but councillors wereconcerned about outsourcing CUPE positions and loss of geographic knowledge. Mike Dietrich, the city’s manager of police support services, said the agreement hasn’t wrapped up mostly due to administrative reasons, he said.

EvENt hElpEd raise awareness of mobility challenges. By Chris Bush

Nanaimo’s only hearing clinic owned and staffed by an audiologist

The News BulleTiN

When your school isn’t designed for a wheelchair it can be tough getting to classes or even the restroom. Katie Schilling, a Grade 11 student who has attended Nanaimo District Secondary School since 2010, has Friedreich’s ataxia, a rare disease causing nervous system damage, which forces her to rely heavily on a motorized wheelchair and students rushing to class crowd corridors and occasionally voice their impatience Schilling can’t keep pace. “They’re really impatient,” Schilling said. “They cut in front of me a lot and when they stop in front of me I kind of run into them and then I would get in trouble.” Schilling decided it was time other students got a sense of what it’s like to spend a day in a wheelchair, so she, Kate Gustafson, school counsellor, and Nicole Sugyama, occupational therapist, staged a Mobility Awareness Day Friday, with six wheelchairs provided by Advance Mobility Products. Participating students were not allowed to get out of the chairs unless there was a school emergency. Using a wheelchair means planning ahead. There are only two wheel-

chair ramps leading into the school. Getting to the second floor means crossing an outdoor quadrangle, in all weather, to reach the school’s single elevator, after a trip to the main office to get the elevator key. Reaching items on the top shelf of a locker becomes practically impossible from wheelchair level. Even closing or opening a locker door takes careful manoeuvring. With the only wheelchairaccessible bathroom on the school’s north end answering nature’s call requires a daunting journey if you’re in a class upstairs on the opposite side of the building. Participants kept notes on what getting around was like, how the world looks from wheelchair level and other

students’ reactions, which were shared with the student council and staff who will be tasked with finding ways to bring mobility awareness throughout the school. Lucas Merlet, a Grade 10 participant, experienced frustration with the lack of wheelchair ramps, difficult washroom and classroom accessibility, uneven outdoor surfaces that must be crossed to get upstairs and the need to retrieve a key from the front office for the elevator. “The best way I could describe it is, like, you’re sitting in an airplane and you’re anxious to get out when you land so you can stretch your legs and stuff, but people like Katie don’t have that option,” Merlet said. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

viu buyS industrial power plant simulator with provincial grant. By Karl yu The News BulleTiN

Vancouver Island University’s trades program will use $399,000 in money from the provincial government to purchase more trades training equipment. Among the more expensive items is an industrial power plant simulator for power engineering students and a Class 8 transport truck that will be utilized for heavy duty mechanic and equipment operator students, according to Guy Ellis, dean of trades and applied technology. The power plant simulator is estimated to cost more than $100,000 and Ellis said it will mimic large steam boilers in pulp mills, processing plants for petro-

Parents in Nanaimo will not be receiving followup calls if they decide against allowing their children to take the Foundation Skills Assessment in 2015. The testing, which examines reading, writing and math skills for Grade 4 and 7 students, will take place across the Nanaimo school district until Feb. 20. The school board passed a motion on Jan. 14 that will see school staff honouring parents’ decisions whether their children take the test. In the past, there were some instances where parents that

chemicals, oil and gas and even liquified natural gas. “The software involved has a simulation of a power plant, so people get to practise controlling the systems, troubleshooting systems when things aren’t working – all without having a real, live, expensive boiler that could possibly blow up when things go wrong,” Ellis said. The truck is projected to cost in the neighbourhood of $50,000 to $60,000 and the combined cost of the welding machines is estimated to be in the same range. Table saws, ovens and industrial control systems for electrical students will also be purchased, said Ellis. The province provided $837,000 to the university in August, a majority of which went toward trades training seats. The equipment is expected to be on campus by March 31 and will be used by students enrolled in programs this semester. reporter@nanaimobulletin.com

School regulations allow parents to withdraw children from testing for three reasons: family emergency, long-term illness or extenuating circumstances, said Ball. “We’ve said all along if they have that right – that right should be respected and honoured,” Ball said. Human impact not considered It seems the B.C. government has never heard the aphorism “Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” If provincial leaders ever heard George Santayana’s famous words, they didn’t seem to have made much of an impact. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be discussing a provincial wolf cull again. The idea of culling wolves was tried in the 1980s, to great public opposition. From 1982-86, 798 wolves were killed, according to the Northern Lights Wildlife Wolf Centre. Yet caribou populations didn’t rebound and here we are again, with the province once again suggesting that the best way to help those dwindling caribou herds is to get up in a helicopter and kill wolves. It’s not even supported by government experts. According to a report prepared by Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, a cull would need to kill at least 80 per cent of the wolf population and keep it up for more than five years to impact caribou herds on which the wolves feed. Even then, the report said a cull is only a short-term solution, since wolf populations quickly recover and the long-term effects on the ecology could bring worse problems. But whether a wolf cull would be an effective way to help increase caribou herds isn’t really the best question to be asking. Culls only offer a solution to the immediate problem. Killing wolves prevents them from eating caribou, but the real problem starts with human encroachment on their habitat. That isn’t going to be solved by a few less, or even a lot less, wolves. What we, as a society, need to be asking is what are the alternatives to killing these animals, rather than going to a cull as a first solution.

The Nanaimo News Bulletin is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. The council considers complaints from the public about the conduct of member newspapers. Directors oversee the mediation of complaints, with input from both the newspaper and the complaint holder. If talking with the editor or publisher does not resolve your complaint about coverage or story treatment, you may contact the B.C. Press Council. Your written concern, with documentation, should be sent to B.C. Press Council, PO Box 1356, Ladysmith,V9G 1A9. For information, phone 888-687-2213 or go to www.bcpresscouncil.org.

The Nature Conservancy of Canada bought 550 square kilometres in that region to protect habitat. Strategies include transplanting animals from healthier to weaker herds to increase genetic diversity, and capturing and penning females with young calves to keep them from being picked off by wolves. The B.C. grey wolf population averages around 8,500, with managed hunting and trapping to protect livestock while preserving the wolf as apex predator in most of its wide range. This context is seldom reported by Vancouver media, which mostly sees its role not as explaining issues but rather embarrassing whatever political party is in power, and providing an uncritical platform for the stop-logging-mining-energy crowd, which is seen as popular with urban viewers. I suppose we’ll never know what difference the 1980s wolf kill would have made if it hadn’t been shouted down for TV ratings and urban envirodonations. u Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Prime minister has damaged democracy Re: Current PM better than alternatives, Letters, Jan. 15. The letter writer suggests that Trudeau or Mulcair would be poor alternatives for Stephen Harper. Many of us believe that Harper has done more damage to the Canadian democracy than any previous prime minister. Instead of an elected governing party, we have a power-hungry, controlling leader, followed by a multitude of weak-backed members of parliament who pretend that they agree with every one of his policies. I voted for Harper the first time around because he promised me a better, more open government – how far from the truth can one stray? Regarding peace keeping, treatment of refugees, changes to voting procedures, treatment of First Nations,

robocalls, environmental policies, omnibus legislation, senate reform, prison reform – the list is almost endless. For the long-term health of Canada, for our future generations, for me it’s anyone but Harper. I will admit that I haven’t read the book that the letter writer recommends, but I have to question the value of its more than 10-year-old ideas as they pertain to the prime minister we are saddled with today.

Support for downtown leads to stiff penalty for parking To the Editor,

I parked downtown, went into my wife’s store to grab a loonie, waited for a couple minutes because she was helping someone, back out to the car, put the loonie in. After depositing the coin, I see there is a ticket. Went straight to City Hall to dispute it, only to find out I have to leave a phone number and can’t speak to anyone. A couple of weeks later, I get a letter informing me that there is “no evidence or reason to dispute it” and that I have to pay $25 and go to adjudication to proceed with my dispute. I now have a $40 ticket for parking downtown and supporting downtown business. Who decided this was a good idea?

To the Editor,

Re: Current PM better than alternatives, Letters, Jan. 15. As usual, PM supporters always resort to negative comments about Mulcair and Trudeau, but cannot use the accomplishments of Harper as justification for preferring him.

Maybe it is because under Harper’s rush to exploit the tar sands, we Canadians now are in debt to the tune of more than $19,000 per capita. Harper’s desire for a balanced budget means the homeless, the disabled, and our veterans, to name just a few, must pay the cost of this folly, while the immensely profitable oil companies are given millions of our tax dollars. Our government has also refused to sign a declaration to continue support for animals threatened by extinction due to a ‘technicality’ which it won’t discuss. These are but a few of our government’s ill-conceived policies. I would prefer either of Mulcair or Trudeau to these neo-cons and then I would be proud to be a Canadian once again.

Government’s LNG talks a propaganda tour To the Editor,

Re: Province promotes LNG, Jan. 13. You may wonder why I have called this LNG tour a propaganda tour by the Liberals of B.C. and Science World? The tour was precisely that, using the children of our Island to tell only one side of the story when it comes to liquefied natural gas. That alone is despicable. The children were not told that the methane gas that escapes through the drilling and the gathering of the gas is more damaging to our climate than carbon dioxide. They were not told that every LNG well uses 17,000 litres of water when it is being drilled. The children were not told that when ‘fracking’ is being done that it is not only water that is

used but dozens of chemicals with it, that have the likelihood of leaking out into our underground drinking water. The children were not told what happens to the used water from the fracking process, which is either stored in above-ground holding ditches that leak back into the ground and the water below, or flushed down our sewer system to be put out into the oceans to poison life there, or blasted back down into the well itself. One side of the story only was told – that the LNG industry is good for the economy and for creating jobs. Hopefully parents and teachers will get busy and teach the other side of the story that the government decided not to tell.

Demrick rolls with hip-hop legends Artist grew up in the Philadelphia projects BY NICHOLAS PESCOD THE NEWS BULLETIN

F

or American hip-hop artist Demrick hanging amongst the stars is nothing new. Since his career began a decade ago, the Philadelphian has collaborated with the likes of Cypress Hill, Snoop Dogg and Xzibit. “Being in a group with Xzibit and B-Real from Cypress Hill is unreal,” said Demrick, whose real name is Demerick Ferm. “That’s like every up-and-coming rapper’s dream. To be able to get the opportunity to make an album with two legends and work with them.” On Friday (Jan. 30) Demrick will be performing at the Queen’s alongside fellow labelmate and Canadian hip-hop legend Madchild. “I am a stoner. I love to blaze up and I know Canada has got the goods,” Demrick said. “Roll up and show up. We’re going to have some fun.” Demrick’s life amongst hiphop heavy weights is a far cry from the life he once had. “I spent a lot of time on the streets hustling and making money however I could,” Demrick said. “That was definitely my main focus in my life.” Although Demrick was born in Spokane, Wash., he spent much of his early life living in Philadelphia, an area that is notorious

for crime, drugs and gangs. “I’ve seen the small-town life and I’ve seen the East Coast major city living,” he said. “I have walked out of my house and seen trailer homes and I have walked out of my house and seen sky rise housing projects.” In 2005 Demrick began to shift his focus to hip-hop and became a member of Tangled Thoughts. “We we’re just kids that were doing it as a hobby,” he said. Demrick, who has released numerous mix tapes under old name Young De, said his earlier lyrics touch on a wide range of subjects, including his life in the North Philadelphia projects, where gangs, drugs, prostitution and poverty were all within reach. “I just started doing a lot of writing. Then from there it was just a progression of expressing myself through music. I fell in love with it,” he said. It wasn’t long after the formation of Tangled Thoughts that Demrick met fellow hip-hop artist, Kurupt, who convinced him and others in the group to move to Los Angeles for a chance at a better life and to pursue their dreams. “When Kurupt came around, he gave us an opportunity to come see what it would really be like,” he said. “We were really

willing to take the risk to pack our bags and come across the country and chase this dream.” After relocating to California, Demrick began to experience success. In 2009 he appeared on B-Real’s debut solo record Smoke and Mirrors, where he is featured in tracks with Xzibit, Snoop Dogg and the Cypress Hill rapper. Demrick is also a member of Serial Kills, a hip-hop group that includes Xzibit and B-Real. “I am happy that this stuff hap-

pened organically. None of this was forced,” he said. “This was all just mutual artists’ respect. Obviously I admired them and grew up listening to them and being able to rap with them is really a dream come true.” Last year, Demrick signed with BattleAxe Records, which is headed by Madchild. “I felt honoured that they asked me to be a part of BattleAxe Records,” Demrick said. The former Philadelphia resident is gearing up for the release of his new album, Losing

Focus, which is slated to come out next month. “I want that soundtrack for your car ride before you go to the party,” he said. “I want it so that you’re vibing out with your homies and you’re ready to go to the club. I want to make that kind of music that people can really create a vibe on.” Demrick performs with Madchild at the Queen’s on Friday. Look for our GIANT 16 page Flyer in Thursday’s News Bulletin!

As February is “Heart Smart Month”, here are some suggestions to keep your heart healthy! Exercise will always be a key component for a healthy heart as it increases oxygen, delivers healthy nutrients (at a cellular level), which will assist in reducing high cholesterol & high blood pressure. Cholesterol is a waxy substance our body naturally produces, to be used in; cell membranes, to make bile salts (for digestion), hormones & Vitamin D. We want more HDL (the good cholesterol) and less of the LDL (The bad cholesterol. The LDL is denser and can become lodged in the arteries). Using EFA’s (Essential Fatty Acids) may support the increase in HDL, reduce arterial plaque and reduce inflammation. The use of antioxidants will help to reduce the damage of free radicals (which is a by-product of our North American lifestyle), throughout the whole body, including the heart. There are many proven supplements and lifestyle changes to support a healthy heart. Come in to the Country Grocer Nutrition Departments, to speak to the Registered Holistic Nutritionists on staff!

Students encouraged to apply for awards Financial awards are available to Grade 12 students in the Nanaimo school district who seek to continue their education. Students are being encouraged to submit applications to the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Schools Foundation for financial awards by the deadline of Feb. 27. “There are many scholarships, bursaries and awards available to high school graduates who are active in the community, excel in sports, are interested

in pursuing specific areas of study, or who have a financial need. We encourage students to apply for as many as are appropriate for them,” said Crystal Dennison, foundation executive director. Money for the awards comes from community groups and donors. In 2014, the foundation handed out a total of $462,000 in awards to 372 students. By Marilyn assaf Vancouver Island University graduate Breanne Quist is in the running for a prestigious national honour – the Ernest C. Manning Innovation Award. Quist has been nominated for her work creating The Privacy Compass (www.privacycompass.ca), a website designed to help B.C. teachers, parents, and schools navigate privacy issues when selecting and using learning management systems and social media tools such as Twitter, Pinterest, blogs and more. The Ernest C. Manning Innovation Awards are dubbed as the ‘most prestigious innovation awards in Canada.’ Nominees are Canadians who have demonstrated recent innovative talent in developing and successfully marketing a new concept, process or procedure. Quist finds out in March if she will receive one of two $10,000 awards from the Manning Awards Foundation. “I’m super excited because being nominated is a huge honour,” says Quist, who graduates from VIU’s Master of Education in Educational Leadership program on Friday (Jan. 30). Quist holds two other VIU credentials – a bachelor of

education degree and an online learning and training diploma. She lives in Nanaimo and teaches all subjects in Grades 8, 9 and 10, and high school technology classes for Anchor Academy, a distance education school in Salmon Arm. B.C. has some of the strictest privacy legislation in Canada and North America, says Hengstler, especially with regard to public schools and their ability to use social media and learning management tools. Quist’s Privacy Compass website was designed to provide the information and support necessary to make informed decisions and support schools and teachers in selecting appropriate tools, support teacher knowledge, and obtain informed consent from students and parents. “Breanne created a framework for identifying key privacy considerations, evaluating them, communicating them to teachers and parents, and creating relevant permission forms,” said Julia Hengstler, VIU professor. Web users need to understand that there are privacy issues and risks when accessing online resources, adds Quist. “It’s about knowing what they are, and understanding the benefits of using the tools and managing risks.” As an example of one potential risk, Quist points to the U.S. Patriot Act. “If a student or teacher

HELP WANTED

HELP WANTED

Distribution & Customer Service Circulation Manager Frank passed away peacefully on Wednesday January 14, 2015 at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital after a brief illness.  Both of his daughters were at his side. Frank was born in Nanaimo on March 11, 1930.  He built his first home himself in the 50’s in Nanaimo, then in the early 70’s he purchased half of his brother Allen’s waterfront property on Gabriola and built himself his forever home in Pilot Bay, which was the best place on earth to Frank. Frank loved life and saw the bright side to everything and often remarked what a blessed life he had. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and uncle and he treasured his family deeply. He had lots of stories which he loved to share with everyone. Frank was a Fisherman, Meat-Cutter/business man, Journeyman Carpenter and in recent years, a model boat craftsman.  Frank never touched someone so lightly that he did not leave a mark.  He smiled with his whole being and he will be sorely missed by his loved ones and those whose lives he touched. He is survived by Nida, his wife of 59 years, daughters: Cindy Graf (Glen), Sandra Rudischer (Herb), grandson: Lee Dunbrack (Heather), nieces: Barbara Ann Andrew (Donald), Linda Gill (Kristen,David Jr) special friend, Colin Masson A celebration of Frank’s life will be held at the Surf Lodge on Gabriola at 2pm Saturday Feb 21st, 2015  Special thanks to the Gabriola Firehall first responders, the BC Ambulance attendants, Dr. Carr and to the kind and caring staff at the Emergency and ICU at the NRGH

Brother and sister make Team B.C. roster Hardy siblings participating in Canada Games BY GREG SAKAKI THE NEWS BULLETIN

I

n a way, Nanaimo siblings Danielle and Owen Hardy get to be on the same team at the Canada Winter Games – they’re both part of Team B.C. Danielle will skate with British Columbia’s U18 girls’ team while Owen is part of the U16 boys’ team. The Games begin Feb. 13 in Prince George. Danielle has been part of Hockey B.C.’s high-performance squad before. Last year that meant a trip to nationals; this year the stage is bigger. “This year is the Canada Winter Games, and it’s in your own province, so it definitely meant a lot more making the team this year than it did last year,” she said. There’s an extended tryout and evaluation process for all members of B.C. Hockey’s highperformance program. Owen, for example, had to try out for the B.C. Cup tournament, show

well there, make it to provincial camp in Nanaimo, make a shortlist after that, and then continue to be evaluated. So it was “pretty exciting,” he said, when he found out he was going to be part of the Canada

Winter Games team, and his big sister was excited for him, too. “It was definitely a proud moment when he made the team,” Danielle said. “It’s pretty cool that both of us are going to be able to share this unreal

experience.” Hockey is something the Hardy siblings have shared for a long time. They’ve both been away at the Pursuit of Excellence program in the Okanagan, and this year they’re both part of

Woodlands Secondary School’s hockey academy. “We train throughout the year together all the time,” Danielle said. “We’re constantly working out together, getting our own ice and constantly pushing each other.” Perhaps as a result, they both bring a similar style to the ice. Owen is a reliable twoway player who uses his size and strength to win his battles, while Danielle is a dangerous shooter and can play anywhere on the ice. B.C.’s boys tend to be strong on the national stage, and look to be contenders again. “We all came together from different organizations and we fit in pretty well together, I think,” Owen said. B.C.’s girls, meanwhile, have never won gold, so they’ll be looking to change that on home ice in P.G. “Each camp we seem to have progressed quite a bit,” Danielle said. “What I’ve heard from the coaching staff is we’re looking really strong and we have a good chance of bringing home a medal.”

Clippers clinch spot in playoffs BY CHRIS BUSH THE NEWS BULLETIN

The Clippers put in two solid performances at Frank Crane Arena on the weekend, clinching a berth in the playoffs with a 6-1 win against the Cowichan Valley Capitals and followed through Sunday with a 4-1 victory against the Salmon Arm Silverbacks. “Friday night, I think, we clinched the playoff spot and, to be honest with you, I think we knew that was going to happen,” Mike Vandekamp, Clippers head coach. “We had a good season.” Now the team, currently at the top of the Island division standings, is focused on holding that position to maximize its leverage going into the playoffs March 3. “We’ve got a lot of hockey still to play between now until playoffs time – 13 games left,” Vandecamp said.

Nanaimo News Bulletin Thursday, January 29, 2015

Hockey club faces off with division rivals From /25

The Clippers were headed to the ice with Powell River Wednesday. Vandekamp credits the Kings, who sent the Clips home winless from their last twogame matchup in Powell River, as hard working arch rivals with good speed and a strong work ethic who will be serious playoff contenders. “It was one of the rare times this season that we lost two in a row, so I guess that’s something to be looked at and makes for a big game,” Vandekamp said.

The Clippers meet up with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs Friday at Frank Crane Arena before driving over The Hump for Saturday’s game on Bulldogs’ home ice at Weyerhaeuser Arena. The Clippers and Port Alberni haven’t met since Dec. 12 when Nanaimo chalked up a 5-2 win on home ice. Vandekamp said it’s a big week playing against the Clippers’ division rivals and it’s important to maintain positive momentum against those teams heading into the playoffs. photos@nanaimobulletin.com

COMMUNITY

Nanaimo News Bulletin Thursday, January 29. 2015

www.nanaimobulletin.com

Beefs & bouquets BOUQUET To ‘Anna’ for making so many children happy by volunteering for the ‘Frozen’ event. We are very proud of you. BEEF To the person who beefed about the hazmat team cleaning up a meth house: the correct response is “thank you.” BOUQUET To Nanaimo Community Dental, an independent dentistry that is here to help out the folks that can’t afford dental care. BEEF To the seemingly obnoxious letter to the editor writer who boasts about being a left-winger – a party that loses in most elections – and for very good reasons. BOUQUET To Stephanie at Trojan for her kindness in a sad time for me over my car accident. It’s good there are people like you in this world. BEEF To the people who decorated a tree in the green space in the centre of the Nanaimo Parkway: your decorations are now an eyesore, you should be fined for littering.

BOUQUET To the staff at Kiwanis Lodge for the care of our father over the past couple of years. Especially to Jennifer and the fourth floor staff for ensuring he stayed safe and comfortable. We know how hard it was to keep that very determined man from going off on his London Drugs trips. BEEF To city council for withholding funds for Empire Days, a well-attended event, because of the society’s name. Are any other ethnic, historical or cultural celebrations supported? Unless an event is multicultural it’s exclusive of others and their feelings.

BOUQUET To Sandy from Sandy’s Ukrainian Kitchen. Without her heart, smile, kindness and hard work we would have nothing but empty bellies.

BOUQUET To Bully’s Excavating who came to my rescue repairing a bad excavating job. Also to Carmon Home Renovations for giving a big hand helping to repair it.

BEEF To the city for trying to blackmail the Empire Days Society into changing its name. So much for freedom of expression. Ils ne sont pas Charlie.

BEEF To the oral surgeon’s office that asked me to come in 30 minutes earlier than scheduled only to make me wait a full hour after the new time to see the surgeon. I didn’t get even a hint of an apology.

BOUQUET To Maureen, Richard and staff at CODE dental. Your dedicated volunteer hours at the friendly walk-in dental office that helps many individuals in need of dental care is so appreciated. It is humbling to know that individuals like you are so eager to help. BEEF To all the cars waiting at red lights who leave long gaps behind the car ahead. Move up and let more people get into the left-hand turn lane so they can go instead of having to wait for the next one. Some of us need to get to appointments.

BEEF To the couple with their little boy who thought it was cool to set off fire crackers at the waterfall by the duck pond in Bowen Park. My little girl was having a great time till this and all the ducks flew off scaring her and of course the ducks. BOUQUET To staff at Starbucks at Terminal Park. Always friendly, relaxed and helpful – makes dropping by for a coffee such a pleasant part of the day.

BEEF To the beefer about their children having to view men in hazmat suits clearing out a meth house. Are you suggesting they risk their health and well being?

BEEF To our neighbour in the Diver’s Lake area. You must not have much of a life if all you have to do is follow us around to see where we take our garbage. That’s something a teenager would do – you’re almost 70.

BEEF To the cloth and thread store for charing a higher price for a membership fee because one cannot afford a computer or e-mail. BOUQUET To all the supporters of Gord Fuller. Nice to see many members of the community coming together in his support at his time of need. He has done so much for the community, thoughts and prayers to this wonderful man in his recovery.

BEEF To the excavating company who did the worst job. Excavating, drainage and cement work being repaired or redone.

BOUQUET To Laird Wheaton Chevrolet Cadillac for outstanding service, in particular the attention and efficiency displayed by Ross Barnard and Gregg Gilbert, who spared no effort and time to conclude this deal.

BOUQUET To Schnitzer Recycling for customer appreciation day when they had a catering truck on site. It’s nice to be appreciated in this day and age.

BOUQUET To Sarah from Kiyo Salon for the haircut she gave me. I love it.

BOUQUET To Tyler Peters of Sure Shot Contracting and his crew on an outstanding job replacing my roof. Not only does my roof look great, but his expertise in roofing is outstanding and after cleanup, did not even know he had ripped off an old shake roof.

BEEF To dog owners in parks who pick up their pet’s poop in biodegradable doggy doo bags and then leave the bags beside park trails or toss them into the trees. The whole idea of the bags is to use them to pack pet waste out of the park.

BOUQUET To the guys in the computer department at London Drugs in Nanaimo North Town Centre. Your patience and help with my tablet went above and beyond. I’ll be back when my laptop dies. BEEF To the rising cost of food. I’ve seen the cost of coffee increase by $2 recently. When will my wages follow suit? BEEF To all my Facebook friends who didn’t respond to my shared request for Beefs and Bouquets submissions to the News Bulletin.

Submit your own Beef or Bouquet Beefs & Bouquets is a free forum to give thanks or express views on issues and events. The News Bulletin reserves the right to edit or refuse submissions. Length is limited to 40 words and two submissions per person per week. A winner will be selected at random to receive a floral bouquet from Turley’s Florist and Potting Shed. Mail or deliver to the News Bulletin, 777B Poplar St., Nanaimo, V9S 2H7 or e-mail to bulletinboard@nanaimobulletin.com. Fax to 250-753-0788.

________________________________________________________________________________ ________________________________________________________________________________

BOUQUET To all the wonderful walkers, dog walkers and bike riders on the E&N Trail who understand a puppy needs socialization to become a great dog. A note to the very few negative people: if you don’t like dogs you should take your walk in the mall.

BEEF To the person who does not believe in free speech and would rather tear up our petitions to Save Linley Valley Trail West and then scatter the pieces along the park trail.

This week’s winner:

LESLIE ANNE DAVEY wins a bouquet from Turley’s Florist.

YOUR HEALTH

President’s own story: 15 years ago I started to have arthritis, prostate, kidney, snoring and sleep apnea problems, which were all helped quickly with natural health products. I made it my life’s purpose to help others. Nick A. Jerch

ARTHRITIS

Pain free in 2 weeks. This is what happened to me personally. I tried drugs, acupuncture, magnets and many other methods. Finally after taking a specially processed shark cartilage I was pain free in 2 weeks. It gave me the idea that I could help thousands of the 5 million men and women suffering daily in Canada with the worst pain on earth to have less pain or no pain at all. Nick A. Jerch, President of Bell Lifestyle. <For 40 years I had injections and drugs and finally Bell Shark Cartilage #1 spared me the endless torture I suffered day and night with 3 bottles costing less than $100. Pat Laughlin, Coldwater, ON. <Cancelled knee replacement. 1 was in pain and limping. Have no more pain now. Can square dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK. <At first I was skeptical. I gradually noticed an improvement. Then I took another brand. I was surprised having so much pain again. Eventually I realized that I needed to re-order Bell. Found relief again. Marie Ciraulo, 72, Oakland, CA. <Many people on our website write: “Can walk #1 NPN 80042283 again for hours”;”Can climb stairs without hanging on to railing”;”First time in 15 years can sleep at night” Rheumatoid arthritis in joints down 90%, same for my sister…Also guaranteed for sciatica. Hundreds of testimonials all with full names and towns. Shark bones/cartilage was a previously thrown away by-product of the food industry. No sharks are caught for their cartilage. Don’t let any activist confuse you.

Frequent BATHROOM TRIPS?

Men Bell Prostate Ezee Flow Tea

Men have relief in 3-5 days from dribbling, burning and rushing to the toilet. Relaxes blood flow for better erections. Helps also with male incontinence. Works in virtually every case. If you are considering surgery, try this tea first. Hundreds of delighted men testifying on our web site:æHad to get up every hour at night. Now I get up once a night. Joseph Whittaker, Sewell, NJ æ I cancelled my prostate surgery. Get up once a night. I'm so happy not to have to face the torment of a prostate operation and possible incontinence and impotence. Albert E. Blain, 74, Schumacher, ON æEven after TURP prostate surgery and microwave therapy had to get up many times. Now down to 1-2 times. Tea is 100% better than drugs. Robert G. Stocker, Eustasis, FL æAfter 1st year drinking tea my PSA went down to 4.5; after 2nd year to 2.9; after 3rd year to 2.3. I highly recommend the tea. A real life saver. Thomas M. Thurston, #4a NPN 80051642 Forsyth, GA. Women Ask for #4b Bladder Control Tea for Women. It seems so unbelievable, most women don't know there is a delicious tasting herbal tea available in all health food stores that stops incontinence, bladder infections, UTis within days and women keep on wearing costly pads and diapers. Try the tea. It is guaranteed. Go shopping and travelling again worry free. We have helped tens of thousands of women.

Shape and Health

A new and improved natural product with the proven ocean kelp bladderwrack. Many men and women wrote us that this ocean kelp reduced cravings and hunger for sweets and starchy food.

<Lost 15 lbs in 3 months. Bell Shape & Health naturally curbed my appetite and actually gave me more energy for workouts. My friends and family are on it now too. Latoya Daniella Scott, 29, Shuterville, SC. <Shape & Health decreased my appetite for sugary food. Lost 5 lbs this month. I feel I have more energy. Thank you.
