A-frame gets a makeover PAT KELLY

Boundary Creek Times Reporter

The A-frame building beside the Greenwood Museum is no more; at least it is no longer an A-frame. A new façade has turned the building into an assay office that will invite visitors to the city to experience a mineshaft with ore car and rails, hitching post with water trough, and signage. This site will be completed by the first week in June. The beatification project was part of a Job Creation Partnership (JCP) grant, which came about through discussions with the Greenwood city council and the Greenwood Economic Development Committee. Sandy Elzinga of Community Futures Boundary provided oversight on the grant application. City Administrator Robin Dalziel presented a report on the costs of the project. He complimented the project workers (George Yamaguchi, James Bateman and Gregory MacVittie) for being very helpful, noting they often worked on various other projects throughout the city besides the A-frame. The estimated labour cost to the city was $14,382 to the end of the year. “This represents almost 500 hours on the part of city employees,” Dalziel’s report noted. “The additional direct cost to the city is under $2,000.” “These grants are useful for providing the city with opportunities that would otherwise have

been ignored,” Dalziel said. Dalziel noted some structural problems popped up during the renovation. “Without the project it might have been too late to save the building.” As well as the A-frame, the JCP grant provided for the installation of a divider fence and general en-

hancement of O’Hairi Park, heritage and directional signage will be put up in the spring, and eight new picnic tables were built. A kiosk that had been discussed early in the project has been put aside for a later project due to map and sign issues and cost overruns if continued. The dollar cost of the entire project was $22,443; with $20,993 covered by JCP and $1,450 from the city to pay for half of the roof repairs and items not eligible to be covered by the grant, such as tool and

vehicle expenses. There was an additional $51,785 of in-kind donations for a total of $74,228 (not including wages for Job Creation Partnership participants, which was administered by CFB). Dalziel said there would be some additional labour required to complete the project, but that most of the needed supplies are already on-hand, and in-kind donations will continue to grow before the project is completed. A soft target date for an official grand opening in the third week of June was also announced.

Celebrate Literacy Day Friday Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and held annually in January to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. To celebrate Family Literacy Day in the West Boundary, the Midway Library and the Collumbia Basin Alliance for Literacy are partnering to present a special storytime on Friday, Jan. 30 at 10 a.m. There will be fun, games and a healthy snack. ABC Life Literacy Canada is encouraging Canadian families to have “15 Minutes of Fun” learning together this Family Literacy Day. Learning can happen at any time. Practicing lit-

eracy together every day has tremendous benefits for both children and parents. All CBAL literacy programs are free. CBAL can help the Boundary residents to learn to read and write better, participate in fun learning programs with their family. CBAL also provides free tutoring for adult learners, English as a second language, and free training and ongoing support for volunteer adult trainers, which can be arranged in various Boundary locations. All programs are confidential. West Boundary community literacy outreach worker Evelyn Booth can be contacted at westboundaryliteracy@gmail.com or by phone at 250-446-2512.

‘He is us’ We wonder. We look at the world at times and just sadly shake our heads and wonder. We wonder what is wrong with a world where morality seems at times to have slipped its anchor. A world where our televisions make our children witnesses to thousands of murders by the time they enter kindergarten. A world where we are entertained by death without consequence in first-person shooter video games. Violence is offered to us as a distraction and seldom are we given the opportunity to build the skills and knowledge around peace and cooperation that would build our communities rather than destroy them. The most recent “upgrade” of the video game Grand Theft Auto allows players to have sex with and then kill prostitutes. This in a province where so many families were made to suffer beyond understanding by the actions of Robert Pickton; and it goes on—the missing women along the Highway of Tears comes to mind. But we can’t really blame the games and the media alone because they only respond to the marketplace, which after all, is all of us. It is somehow tragic that the public accepts such crap as the recent movie The Interview as being something that would entertain us. A movie where, unfortunately, assassination is ladled out as comedy. Sadly few stood to question that, while many stood to cry out for the rights of free speech. But with rights also come responsibilities. A cartoon character from many years ago named Pogo probably had it right when he said, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

housing report

An early Christmas present for the Greenwood community arrived on Dec. 22 last year when The Greenwood Improvement Society (TGIS) received the Greenwood Seniors’ Housing Study final report. The report supports the vision to ultimately build a small supportive housing residence of approximately 20 to 24 units in Greenwood; however, it cautions that building and operating a seniors’ housing complex in Greenwood will only be feasible if the costs can be significantly reduced, either through grants or other strategies to reduce the initial capital costs or through subsidies to reduce monthly operating costs. The report clearly demonstrates a need. It says that in 2011, more than 30 per cent of Greenwood residents were 65 years of age or older, nearly double the provincial level. Housing and support options for seniors are typically viewed as a continuum ranging from seniors living independently in their own homes through to residential care facilities (i.e., nursing homes). Between these two extremes are “supportive housing” and “assisted living accommodation.” There is currently no supportive housing or assisted living accommodation for seniors in Greenwood. When seniors can no longer live safely in their homes, their only choice is to leave their community. According to the report, as of Dec. 15, 2014, TGIS was aware of six seniors in the area assessed by Interior Health (IH) that required both home support and home care. These individuals would benefit from supportive housing or assisted living accommodation, but they continue to live in Greenwood because they do not want to leave their home community. The report also raises the concern that, without supportive housing in Greenwood, seniors of Japanese descent will face a second forced relocation in their lifetime. In 2012, TGIS began to explore the possibility of building a seniors’ housing complex. In July 2014, the society received funding from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation to conduct a needs assessment and preliminary feasibility analysis. The report was informed by surveys conducted by TGIS in 2012. The majority of survey respondents indicated they wanted to remain in Greenwood as they aged. The two most common reasons given for not wishing to remain in Greenwood were “insufficient health and support services” and “no suitable seniors’ housing.” The report was written by Margaret Steele, a consultant from Grand Forks who had prepared a similar report for Christina Lake in 2007. A “ball-park” estimate for the facility comes in at $2.9 million; with monthly expenses per unit estimated at approximately $1,625—an amount beyond the level most Greenwood seniors could afford (the majority of survey respondents indicated they could afford less than $1,250 per month). The informative report discusses the three general stages (planning, construction and operation) needed to bring the seniors’ housing facility into reality. The next steps toward the seniors’ facility include forming a planning committee, build capacity and expand knowledge about housing and funding options, continue to build community support and to raise funds and build up equity. Fund now accepting letters of intent

The Midway Partnership Fund Advisory Committee (MPFAC) is looking to receive letters of intent for the 2015 year for projects that build on strengths in the community, demonstrate collaboration with other agencies and/or respect for cultural diversity. The committee is looking for applicants that meet certain criteria. Grant applicants must be a charitable organization and they must be registered with the Canada Revenue Agency and have a federal tax number. For organizations that are not registered with Canada Revenue Agency, a sponsorship agreement with another organization for the purpose of this grant application is permissible. Grant monies must be used within the Village of Midway. The proposed project must have a percentage of funding in place before they apply. Letters of Intent must be received by no later than March 30. If the project meets the criteria, the advisory committee invites them to submit a full application. Letters should be sent to: Advisory Committee, Midway Partnership Fund Village of Midway, P.O. Box 160, Midway, B.C. V0H 1M0. Applications will be due by no later than April 30. Funds that are distributed come from two sources. The Heritage Fund is an investment partnership between the Village of Midway and the Vancouver Foundation. This fund continues in perpetuity and each year the interest income is forwarded to the advisory committee for granting purposes. The Legacy Fund is an investment partnership between the village and the Phoenix Foundation. This fund carries on in perpetuity; however, unlike the Heritage Fund it remains open to donations from any interested party. Pamphlets with full details are available at the library, McMynn’s Hardware and the village office. The MPFAC is supported by the Phoenix Foundation of the Boundary Communities. For more information call John Fair at 250-449-2639 or Danny Anderson at 250-449-22208.

KETTLE RIVER Q&A

Live your dream

Where will your retirement take you? YOU’RE DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY, enjoying the rush of speed, and suddenly the fuel light turns on. You begin to feel anxious. How long can you keep driving? What if you run out of gas? Will you reach your destination? In your car, the solution is as close as the nearest gas station. In your retirement, it’s not that simple. There are no “money stations” where you can fill up your savings. There is no tow truck ready to help pull you through next month’s expenses. That’s why it’s important to make sure your “money tank” never runs out. An effective way to help ensure that your fuel supply for retirement doesn’t run short is to incorporate solutions that provide guaranteed lifetime income into your retirement plan. CHALLENGES ON THE ROAD TO RETIREMENT. In balancing responsibilities between parents and children, today’s generation of Canadians approaching retirement is facing unique challenges. Here are some of the twists and turns in the road that many Canadians confront as retirement approaches: • Aging parents are living longer and require extra care and support; • Children living at home longer can strain resources; • Managing high levels of debt can become a burden when approaching retirement; • Longer life expectancies can delay the transfer of wealth from generation to generation. MAPPING YOUR ROUTE. Putting a well-designed financial plan into action can help you overcome these roadblocks and sustain an enjoyable standard of living throughout retirement. But planning isn’t simply about the amount of savings you have on the day you retire. Yes, it’s important to accumulate as much as you can while you’re working. But more significant than any total dollar amount is how you decide to invest and manage your money leading up to and in retirement. Depending on your circumstances, you may not need, say, a million dollars to live

comfortably during your entire retirement. You do need a well-thought-out financial strategy. GUARANTEED INCOME FOR RETIREMENT. You want to enjoy your retirement and spend time doing what you love; perhaps that means travelling to exciting destinations, picking up new hobbies, golfing or relaxing at the cottage. Many activities come with a price tag, above and beyond what you’ll need for regular day to day expenses. For essentials it’s a good idea to make sure you have enough income that is guaranteed for life – so you never run out. Guaranteed sources of income may include government benefits such as CPP and OAS, as well as defined benefit pension plans offered by employers. Other specialized products are also available to help meet this need, such as cashable and non-cashable annuities. In addition, insurance companies offer a variety of flexible solutions that provide the option of guaranteed income designed to last as long as you need it to. You can spend income that is guaranteed for life with confidence, knowing that the next payment will be deposited into your “money tank.” And, with your essentials covered, you can put surplus guaranteed sources, such as investment accounts, towards pleasure and entertainment that will make your retirement that much more enjoyable. Running out of money during retirement is simply not an option. Working with your advisor, you can develop a plan that will help ensure that your financial engine has enough fuel to keep your retirement lifestyle humming along.

Hired Equipment Registration West Kootenay District

The West Kootenay District of the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is now completing Hired Equipment lists for the upcoming fiscal year.

All individuals or companies who are currently registered through the ministry’s offices in Nelson or Grand Forks will be mailed invitations by the end of January to re-register their equipment for the coming fiscal year. Individuals or companies who were not registered in 2014, but who wish to have their equipment listed, are invited to visit or phone the Nelson or Grand Forks office to obtain the appropriate registration forms. You will be required to have Commercial (Comprehensive) General Liability Insurance with minimum $2 million third party liability and a WorkSafe BC clearance letter prior to starting work on any ministry projects. Dump trucks must provide a current weigh slip, front tire size, and manufacturer’s front axle rating. Equipment can only be registered in one area in any given year and must be owned or leased-to-own in order to be eligible for registration. Seniority is not transferable from area to area. The deadline for new registrations for the 2015/2016 fiscal year is March 20, 2015. Late registrations will be accepted, but may appear at the bottom of the open list. Note that there is no charge for registering new equipment or for changing or deleting equipment information already listed.

Register by March 20, 2015 at one of these offices: Nelson Office: 310 Ward Street, 4th Floor Telephone: 250 354-6400

Referees get game passes

For the past couple of years the Boundary Minor Hockey Association has had to scramble to fill the referee slots at the beginning of the season. Among those who have stepped up to help make sure the game goes on are Sheinah Bosovich and Kari Durban. The pair was selected to attend a Kelowna Rockets Western Hockey League (WHJ) game on Saturday, Jan. 7 when the Rockets hosted the Medicine Hat Tigers. Western Hockey League Officiating

Nights is a program under which young BC Hockey officials, aged 12 - 20, can apply to attend a WHL game as part of the “WHL Officiating Experience” contest. They received their admission and met with the game officials for a pregame question and answer period that provided them a behind-the-scenes look into what it is like at the Major Junior Hockey level. As a special bonus they got to meet

Madison Bowey, one of Team Canada’s players on gold medal world juniors team this year. As well, Bosovich was one of four of young officials selected to dress in their full gear and join the game officials for a pre-game lap of the ice and stand with them during the national anthem. “My favourite part was getting to meet the officials and them giving us advice,” Bosovich said, “and getting to talk to Madison Bowey.”

Spinach for your bones? You need calcium for strong bones, right? Well, yes, but you need more than that. There is more than just calcium in your bones and other substances are needed to do the work of building bones. We need to remember too that bones are living tissue, not just something we make until we stop growing and then they just continue inert and unchanging. Let’s think about bone health and bone nutrition—something important at this time of year when roads and sidewalks can be slippery. I slipped on ice while walking recently and banged a hip and an elbow, thankfully no further damage. It is interesting that so much emphasis is put on calcium for bone health especially calcium from certain dietary sources. As I have written in an earlier article in this column, the rate of calcium intake is rarely a problem. Most people on western diets get several times the amount of people with much simpler, lessrefined diets in developing countries where osteoporosis is very rare. The much greater problem in western, modern diets is the acid-forming nature of much of our food that causes leaching of calcium from our bones, thus weakening them. The Harvard School of Public Health says that it is “not clear that dairy products are really the best source of calcium for most people.” But here I would like to consider other issues like some nutrients beyond calcium that we should be concerned about. The mineral magnesium is also very important to build strong bones. It works as an enzymatic cofactor to incorporate calcium and other building blocks into bones. It is also needed for over 300 other biochemical reactions in the body, including protein synthesis, muscle and nerve function, blood glucose regulation and energy production. Do

you get enough magnesium? Most people don’t. Because magnesium has so many functions,

chronic low magnesium intake increases the risk of many illnesses. According to the National Institutes of Health, most of us are not getting optimal amounts of this important mineral in part due to a decrease in magnesium content in foods because of industrial farming prac-

tices, which deplete magnesium levels in the soil. Magnesium is needed to convert both vitamin D and calcium into their usable forms. For conversion of the common vitamin D3 supplement into its active form, magnesium is essential. Aside from calcium

and magnesium, vitamin K is also needed. People who are vitamin K deficient have a greater risk of fracture. In post-menopausal women who have started to experience unwanted bone loss, vitamin K has clearly been shown to help prevent fractures.

Reaching out about psychosis ReachOut Psychosis came to BCSS on Monday morning and to GFSS in the afternoon to raise awareness about psychosis and mental illness. ReachOut Psychosis makes this message meaningful to B.C.’s youth with free school presentations. By identifying psychosis as a serious, but treatable medical condition of the brain this program works to help youth and their friends and teachers recognize it early and get effective help. If properly diagnosed at early stages, medical treatment has the ability to not just turn young lives around, but to save lives. Teen suicide statistics related to youth mental illness are staggering. Performances by Vancouver rock band Froghead and tap dancer Susan Nase were interspersed with interactive psychosis information to help educate young people about psychosis. Mike Young from the band spoke personally about how psychosis affected his life. ReachOut is a dynamic and highly effective performance touring the province since 2005, performing in gyms and auditoriums to more than 20,000 students annually. ReachOut is a program of the BC Schizophrenia Society and

HereToHelp. Some facts about psychosis: three per cent of the population experience psychosis; the first episodes of psychosis usually occur between the ages 16-24; and early diagnosis and medical treatment as soon as possible makes a fast and complete recovery much more likely. Tour coordinator Susan Nase said it could be challenging for someone suffering psychosis to self-identify. “One of the reasons we do this show is to help give people the tools to be able to know what the symptoms are so they can then understand what is happening. It can be very confusing for someone who has the symptoms to know what is going on they can be resistant to the treatment if they don’t know what is happening, because it can seem so real to the person that they have difficulty seeing it themselves.” Hence the message prominently displayed on the ReachOut banners at the assembly: “Psychosis sucks if there is nobody there to catch you.” For more information you can email reachout@reachoutpsychosis.com or visit them online at www.reachoutpsychosis.com.

Abundant Health Low vitamin K intake is emerging as a dietary risk factor for osteoporosis. Researchers have shown that increasing dietary vitamin K intake by 100 mcg per day—roughly doubling the average American adult intake—for one full year can significantly increase bone density in postmenopausal women. Vitamin K is essential and works with the other nutrients important to bone health—calcium, vitamin D, and magnesium—to ensure bone strength. Many of the best sources are green leafy vegetables as vitamin K is required for photosynthesis. Fortunately, vitamin K is fairly stable in storage and only slightly affected by common cooking methods. There have been no cases of anyone consuming a toxic dose of vitamin K from food. Considering its safety, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences has chosen not to establish a Tolerable Upper Intake Level for vitamin K. Further evidence for the safety of dietary vitamin K comes from research studies where doses of vitamin K at 500 times the Dietary Reference Intake level did not lead to observable toxicity. Popping calcium pills has become normal in our culture where osteoporosis has become so common but recent research points to calcium supplements posing a danger to heart health. Calcium plays many key roles in our health and is certainly needed but calcium as an isolated nutrient can be a problem. It needs to be consumed in the presence of magnesium and, for

proper utilization, there must be vitamin K present as well. When vitamin K levels are low, calcium collects in the blood and can lead to calcification in the arteries. The Rotterdam Study, which followed about 4,800 individuals for a 10-year period, showed that individuals who consume the most dietary vitamin K experience 50 per cent less arterial calcification and cardiovascular death. Calcium belongs in our bones, not in our blood and vitamin K helps to keep it in the right place. So, the take-away message should be to get enough calcium, yes, but try to get it in a natural form that includes the magnesium and vitamin K that are needed for its proper utilization. Avoid calcium supplements (especially those with isolated calcium), get sufficient vitamin D, consume a non-acid-forming diet, and do some weightbearing exercise and your bones should last you a lifetime. I have for a long time and will continue to eat lots of leafy greens such as spinach to get plenty of calcium and magnesium and vitamin K packaged all together in just the right way to maintain bone health so I don’t have to worry about breaking a bone just from a slip on the ice.
