A pioneer of journalism who spent her twilight years living at Seton Villa in Burnaby has passed away. Simma Holt was 92 when she died on Friday. Holt was the first female managing editor of The Manitoban, the student newspaper at the University of Manitoba. And throughout her career, she continued to forge new paths for women. When she was hired as an assistant to the city desk editors at the Vancouver Sun in 1944, she didn’t tackle the kinds of stories traditional doled out to women, the social beat or home economics column. Instead she did ride-alongs with the fire department, and cultivated sources in the police department. Her ability to disarm people often got her stories. When a family suffered a tragedy, it was often Holt who went to their home to collect a recent photo. She also covered the waterfront beat, mixing as easily with rugged longshoremen as shipping-industry executives. Please see HOLT, A3
