he husband and daughter of Erica Schmidt are travelling to Uganda this week in honour of her memory. Henry and Amy Schmidt, as well as family friend Audrey Hovenkamt, leave for the three-week trip on Thursday, Jan. 29 to visit the Uganda Jesus Village Orphanage, which was an important part of Erica’s life. Erica was reported missing in Abbotsford in October 2013, resulting in a massive three-month volunteer effort to find her. Her body was found in a dense brush area in the 2100 block of Whatcom Road on New Year’s Day 2014, and authorities confirmed she had taken her own life. Her family – also including daughter Sophia, son Michael and three young grandchildren – openly spoke of Erica’s battle with depression. Henry, a Bible school teacher, also detailed his wife’s devotion to those less fortunate, particularly at the orphanage in Uganda. Henry and Erica travelled to many places over the years, and they first came across the Uganda Jesus Village Orphanage on one of their trips in about 2006. They visited the site about five times, with Erica often packing suitcases filled with goods such as clothing,

The orphanage is currently home to about 60 kids from the ages of 12 to 23 who were rescued from a refugee camp in northern Uganda in 2006. This was at a time when the warlord Joseph Kony was attacking the Acholi tribe in that area. Orphans who were in danger were brought to the capital city of Kampala in the southernmost part of Uganda. Erica formed a bond with many of the kids. “She absolutely loved them all, and they loved my mom,” Amy said.

Amy, who has also previously visited the site about five times, said there are a couple of reasons for this trip.

“We want to let them know that we’re OK and how much my mom loved them.” Also while they are there, friends from Edmonton will build a playground for the orphanage, and it will include a special bench with a plaque to commemorate Erica. Amy said the family plans to continue its involvement. Some of the older kids are now leaving the facility and returning to their home villages, and she hopes to set up a mentoring program to assist them as they seek employment options, such as starting up their own businesses. Due to the greater distance from ACS, the new facility will require more funding from BC Housing for additional staff. BC Housing representatives are still working out the annual operating budget. The property on Gladys is city-owned and will be leased to BC Housing for $1 per year over a 60-year agreement. Construction is expected to start in the fall.

Osprey nest moved away from power pole

Joint effort a ‘win-win’ for birds and company plagued by power outages A pair of ospreys will return from South America in the spring to a new home, thanks to a team effort at a local gravel operation. The large raptors had built a nest several years ago on top of a power pole at Mainland Sand & Gravel’s (MSG) wash plant. Over the years, the birds added to their home. But as they built, stray sticks would occasionally end up falling onto one of the three transformers below the growing nest. Often, that would knock out power to the whole business. The solution came thanks to the Ridgedale Rod & Gun Club and the British Columbia Wildlife Federation’s (BCWF) Lower Mainland Region, which developed a plan to relocate the nest onto another pole. The company was happy with the plan, and the groups then worked with well-known ecologist David Hancock to find a site for the birds’ new home. The company decided to put up two poles with platforms, with wood donated by MJ Concrete Pumping, and rubber screens for inside the platforms supplied by MSG. With the province signing off on a permit to relocate the nest in late November, the plan went ahead, with the pole and platform installed, and the nest moved five days later to a nearby site with a stunning river view. It won’t be until the spring until the ospreys arrive back in the Lower Mainland, but David Oliver, a Ridgedale Rod & Gun Club past president and BCWF treasurer, who helped spearhead the move, said they’ve been told that the birds usually accept their move. “It’s a win-win for the birds and the company,” he said.

Students compete for charity funds Mouat Secondary holds semifinal event

Two Grade 10 students representing Canuck Place Children’s Hospice won the first-semester semifinals of a contest help Wednesday (Jan. 21) at W.J. Mouat Secondary. Aries Russel and Kristie Hartle now advance to the finals in June as part of the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) and a chance to win $5,000 for their charity. The program is an international initiative designed to support young people in developing community awareness. Students are taught about philanthropy and charity as part of their Planning 10 course at Mouat. In teams, they research social issues in the community and create a presentation on a local charity they believe is best placed to tackle an issue for which they are passionate. The YPI semi-finals involve the winning team from each

In celebration of family literacy day, a free event was held Jan. 24 to launch the start of the community literacy challenge. A pancake breakfast was held and hosted by the firefighters of the Clearbrook Fire Hall. Breakfast was followed by literacy day celebrations at the Clearbrook Library and The Reach. The community literacy challenge encourages residents to read an extra 15 minutes a day and fill in a reading log that can be entered into a draw for prizes. On Jan. 12, Sharon Crowley, outreach coordinator with Literacy Matters Abbotsford, spoke to city council on the city’s need for an adult literacy centre. She said there is a need for an accessible space in the community for such a centre, where adults are comfortable and feel accepted, as some may

Use the bridges, pay the tolls As 42,000 drivers in B.C. are discovering, failure to pay their bridge tolls is resulting in ICBC blocking them from driver’s licence or vehicle insurance renewals. That figure represents an all-time record number of people who have refused or neglected to pay tolls on the Port Mann and Golden Ears bridges – 25,000 and 17,000 drivers, respectively – worth $3 million for just the Port Mann. Some feel the measure to deny motorists the ability to drive is overly harsh, and obviously, there is still a level of opposition to the concept of bridge tolling. It’s a surprising number, given that the Golden Ears has been tolled since it opened in 2009, and the Port Mann became tolled in 2012 as a new bridge. It’s not as though these fees are new, or haven’t been thoroughly discussed and debated. The reality is that the movement of traffic through the region requires river

crossings, and those structures are astronomically expensive to build. They have to be financed somehow, and there are bound to be opponents of every option, including road tolls, increased gas taxes, additional provincial tax – or, as is the case here, user-pay. As for the denial of licence and insurance renewal, serious consequences are not an unusual result of failing to pay for a service. Don’t pay your hydro and gas bills, lose your power and gas. Ignore your cell bill, your phone eventually goes silent. The vast majority of bridge users pay their tolls, many by pre-authorized payment. Fee-ducking drivers are issued three warnings before ICBC issues a “Refuse to Issue” notice. Aside from isolated cases of billing errors, it would seem the system is fair enough. If you use the bridges, pay up.

Other Hand Thank you Hawaii, for sending us two glorious days and a reminder that spring can’t be far away. Despite that, I wasn’t too happy with the rains of the Pineapple Express that preceded the record warm temperatures of Sunday and Monday. Ironic, however, was that as we were bathed in sun, the eastern seaboard of North America was bracing for what Monday night was portending to be an historic winter storm. Obviously it is better to live with the proximity to pineapples than it is Big Apples. States-of-emergency were declared from New Jersey to Maine, snowfalls expected to reach 90 centimeters in Boston, and Canada’s Maritime provinces also battening the hatches. Back on this side of the country, while

significantly more pleasant, the balmy weather appeared to have created some confusion in the natural world. I heard tree frogs croaking, and by Sunday evening even a pond frog announced his presence. Bulbs are poking their shoots up and a Facebook friend even posted a pic of a salamander wandering his farm, the warm temperatures encouraging these normally dormant or hibernating creatures to emerge, albeit briefly. Unfortunately, what also emerged in my yard Sunday afternoon were mosquitoes! Biting bugs in January are unheard of here. Fortunately, evening frost likely killed them off, hopefully before they had time to lay eggs, and negated the need to unearth repellent. That I’m sure, will wait for another day because despite current double digit temperatures, I would be surprised if winter doesn’t revisit us between now and when spring and mosquito-eating swallows return in earnest. So with thoughts of winter still somewhat on my mind, I have to wonder how “driverless” cars will cope with snow,

black ice and pedestrians in dark clothing. Google, the great saviour of information seekers, claims that within two to five years people will be riding in self-driving cars, though it does admit that they will within that time frame still be test vehicles.

And if you think the concept is nonsense, Google says it has had a unit operating without problems on a test track since December, and in fact has racked up more than 700,000 miles on public roads without causing a crash (though apparently in the latter accomplishment there were real people behind the wheel just in case something went wrong). Intriguingly, several U.S. states, in great

strides of faith and conviction to technology, have already passed laws allowing autonomous (driverless) cars on public roads. And quite the cars they will be if they are anything like the Mercedes concept car debuted at the innovative CES (Consumer Electronics Show) earlier this month. This large egg-shaped vehicle allows its four passengers to sit facing each other just like in a lounge. Gives whole new meaning to Greyhound’s signature slogan – “Leave the driving to us” – except there won’t be any “us” other than sensors, cameras and some pretty amazing computers. Google is leading the way in developing software and sensors to actually get these vehicles into common use on the road, although it has yet to figure out how to make money on its cars. Knowing the incredible financial success it has had with other things its wizards have developed, I’m sure they’ll do just fine. I’m also sure that at least in my lifetime such cars will be few and far between on British Columbia’s mountainous and often wintery roads. markrushton@abbynews.com

Drivers: watch for pedestrians This is both a plea to drivers and a thank you. I need to ask the drivers out there to please watch for pedestrians when making a turn at a light or anywhere. This thank you is very overdue. On Nov. 7 at 3 p.m., in a crosswalk about three feet from the curb, I was struck down by a vehicle making a wide left turn southbound at Clearbrook and Hillcrest. I would like to thank the woman

who helped me to the sidewalk while traffic was still making a left turn behind me as I was lying on the road. She could have been struck as well. To those drivers: Why continue, what is the hurry? I thought I was going to be run over. I would also like to thank all the emergency crew for their quick response and care along with the driver who came back to the scene. I would like to thank

the ICBC injury adjuster who was a big help. A huge thank you goes out to the two men who stopped to give their witness testimony. Now my other reason for writing this is to ask the drivers out there to please watch for pedestrians. On Jan 24 about 9 a.m., crossing at a

light at Trethewey and South Fraser Way, another driver was making a left and stopped about three feet from hitting me. Still recovering from my first injury, I was extremely shaken up. I enjoy walking and now I find myself overly cautious. Wendy Irwin, Abbotsford

Hyphenating nationalities divides us I should think there are not many among us that do not feel that our world is coming to a major turning point. Terror has become the order of the day and maybe we should all do something to help defuse this problem starting in our community and remove anything that pits one group against each other on the basis of religion, colour or nationality. I have thought about it a lot and feel saddened about some comments that are running rampant in our country at this time. I feel at a loss to find a solution for all the problems but one issue may help and that is getting back our “national identity” and I wonder if the media could help in this. I am a senior citizen who considers himself a Canadian. In fact I emigrated here in 1981 from England with my wife and daughter. We first arrived in Montreal and spent four and a half years there, three as Landed Immigrants, then as soon as we could we became Proud Canadians. I was not impressed with being called an Anglophone and whenever I could called myself a telephone but the stigma was still there. Our next-door neighbor, who was born in Canada but her parents, had emigrated from Poland. She was very unhappy by being told she had to hyphenate her nationality to Polish-Canadian. Today we hear the media talk about AsianCanadian, Indo-Canadian and ChineseCanadians. Have the media no idea that every time they do this it divides us as Canadians and drives a wedge between us. I feel that if you have stood up and taken the Oath of Allegiance to Canada you should be called a “A Canadian.” Not a separate hyphenated group based on your country of origin. Who knows, one day, maybe we could even change the term “First Nation” to Canadian after all Canada is an Iroquois word meaning Cabin or Lodge.

Warm weather breaks record Temperature reached 14.9 C Sunday

For the third time this winter, springlike temperatures have snapped a weather record in Abbotsford. Sunday’s high of 14.9 C broke the former June 25 record of 13.5 C set in 2005. The records go back to 1945.

Abbotsford was just one of several communities that set new records for high temperatures, ranging from Lillooet in the interior, to Comox on Vancouver Island. With a temperature of 15.3 C, White Rock recorded the day’s highest temperature.

On Monday, the mercury reached 14 C for three hours at A b b o t s f o rd International Airport, where Environment Canada measures the weather. However, Abbotsford’s 12-yearold historical June 26 record of 14.4 C, didn’t fall.

Just last month, though, the mercury soared even higher,

reaching 17 C on Dec. 9 and 17.8 C on Dec. 10.

Incidents within 30 minutes of each other A Surrey man has been charged following the robberies of two businesses in 30 minutes on Tuesday night in Abbotsford. Jason Hendrick Degroot, 44, has been charged with robbery and attempted robbery. The first robbery took place at about 8 p.m. at a business in the 32300 block of South Fraser Way. A man approached the cashier and produced a note demanding cash. He fled the business, and staff contacted the Abbotsford Police Department (APD). At 8:30 p.m., while officers were on scene in the store and searching for the suspect in the area, a second robbery was reported at a restaurant in the 32900 block of South Fraser Way. In that case, the man made a verbal demand for cash. Based on descriptions provided by witnesses and the security video from the business, it was quickly determined that the same suspect was involved. Additional APD patrol, bike squad and K9 officers arrived at the second scene. The suspect was located a few minutes later and was arrested after a short foot pursuit. Const. Ian MacDonald said staff from both locations are to be commended. “They were excellent witnesses and handled the extremely stressful situations very well,” MacDonald said. He said no weapons were used in either robbery. According to the provincial court database, Degroot has several prior convictions for robbery and theft, as well as assault with a weapon, theft, breaching his probation and possession of property obtained by crime.

teams from seven other school districts, including Chilliwack, Langley, Pitt Meadows, Surrey, New Westminster, North Vancouver and Vernon. The Vernon Panthers advanced to the champion-

The Pilots won twice in four days, losing just once, in Pacific Junior Hockey League action. After dropping a 4-3 decision in Langley on Thursday, the Pilots won 2-1 in overtime at home over Port Moody and edged Grandview 2-1 Sunday evening to improve to 20-160-2, good for second in the Harold Brittain Conference. The Pilots got defenceman Devon Becker back for the weekend, and the Langley native scored twice in his return Thursday night. “It’s really important to have Becker back,” said Pilots coach Jim Cowden. Also, Lucian Serban scored his first of the season, banging home a rebound at the side of the net. He was the last remaining forward on the team to finally tally a goal. “It was huge for him,” said Cowden. Friday’s overtime win over the Panthers required two goals from team captain Brady Lawlor. Lawlor tied the game with less than six minutes remaining in regulation, and then scored at 3:58 of the second overtime period. On Sunday Abbotsford made the trip to the Burnaby Winter Club and managed to edge the Steelers 2-1. Now the Pilots have just six games remaining in the regular season. Abbotsford next hosts the Aldergrove Kodiaks on Friday and then visits North Vancouver Saturday.

On Friday night, the Abbotsford Pilots defeated Port Moody 2-1 in overtime. Pilots captain Brady Lawlor tied the game with less than six minutes remaining in regulation, and then scored at 3:58 of the second overtime period. “The first goal was a nice pass from [Kellan] Lavallee in the slot and he one-timed it to tie it,” said Pilots coach Jim Cowden. “In double overtime it was three-on-three, so there was lots of open ice. He went down and took a nice shot, bar and in. You couldn’t blame the goalie on that one.” Alexander Kong stopped 34 shots for the Pilots.

Leo passed in the early afternoon of Jan 1, 2015 surrounded by his loved ones. Leo is predeceased by his mother Alma, father Ed and his brother Denis.
