Burnaby’s building permit figures rose for the third-straight year in 2014, when city hall issued permits with a total construction value of $698.5 million. The permit figures include those for alterations and repairs, as well as 1,799 new housing units under construction. The permit values were at their highest level in the city since 2008 after which the global economy crashed. Burnaby’s record year was in 2008, when it issued $792.4 million worth of permits. The very next year, when the effects of the economic downturn were realized, the figure dropped to just under $422 million. Since then, Burnaby has been catching up. In 2010, it issued $539.7 million worth of permits, in 2011 it was $615.5 million, and in 2012, $514.7 million. In 2013, it climbed back to $674.7 million, as cranes and highrises under construction became a familiar site in Burnaby, particularly in the Metrotown and Brentwood areas. twitter.com/WandaChow
