Grieving dog owner looks for closure Jessica Peters The Progress Audrey Phare has been wracked with grief all week, after a Chilliwack Taxi cab driver ran over her dog in her driveway. And while Phare has now heard from the apologetic cab company’s manager, it hasn’t been enough to take away the pain of losing her ‘fur baby.’ Phare had just let her 11-yearold dog Sus out into the yard for a bit of fresh air and sunshine. The yard is large, and Sus’ hip dysplasia meant she wasn’t moving very fast lately. Sus headed to her favourite sun spot in the driveway, and Phare turned on the noon hour news. Moments

later, the peaceful afternoon was interrupted by screaming outside, and frantic barking. “I could hear screaming and I went running outside and I looked toward the road and I saw my boyfriend running down the road,” she told The Progress. “I couldn’t understand why he would be running down the road, and he was screaming.” Phare threw on some slippers, ran down the driveway to investigate, only to learn that Sus had been hit by a cab as she lay in the sun. “That’s when I saw the cab driver, he was freaking out,” she said. “He did seem remorseful, to a point.” But as Phare and her boy-

friend tended to their dying dog, the cab driver got on the phone with his dispatcher. The dispatcher then called the RCMP, who were told that the cab driver hit an unleashed dog in a driveway. The RCMP were also told that the dog was one of “four or five dogs” that were running loose. The family has three dogs, Phare clarified, and Sus was the only one not on a wire lead. “She was an indoor dog,” Phare said. “I had just let her out.” The next few minutes were devastating for Phare. “By the time I got there they said ‘her eyes are turning grey,’ liquid was coming from her pri-

vates, and her chest looked like it was caved in,” Phare said. “She died within 20 minutes.” Chilliwack Taxi manager Kuldeep Singh said the driver left because the RCMP said the accident was not his fault and that he didn’t have to stay. The driver wasn’t even called to Phare’s house — he had the wrong address and must have realized it once he drove the long driveway. It was the driver’s quick departure and refusal to drive them to a vet’s office that has Phare upset. “I feel like we need some acknowledgement here,” she said. “He said ‘I’ll be right back Continued: CAB/ p5

Postal workers found out last week precisely when door-to-door delivery of the mail is set to end in Chilliwack. The end date Nov. 16, 2015 for 12,200 Chilliwack households. That’s when they will pick up their mail from community mailboxes, in a process known as CMB conversion, instead of retrieving it from their doorsteps. “We now have an end date in sight,” said Peter Butcher, president of the Upper Valley local of Canadian Union of Postal Workers. Canada Post announced last month that Chilliwack would be among the first communities to see home delivery axed in 2015 in a cost-saving measure. Butcher represents 63 CUPW workers in Chilliwack, including letter carriers and rural route carriers, who got the news about the conversion date this week. “Morale at the station is not that good,” he admitted. About 23 mail carrier routes could go down to 13 mobile routes in Chilliwack, he said. The local Posties are not sure yet how it will impact local workers in the coming months as November looms. “Canada Post is transforming to secure its future to meet the changing needs of Canadians and succeed in an increasingly competitive marketplace,” wrote a Canada Post official in a memo to depot staff. “We recognize that these changes may create a great deal of uncertainty among our employees. We want to assure you that a primary consideration of our planning is the effect on our employees.” Attrition is expected to account for some of the staffing adjustments by way of retirements, resignations and transfers, according to correspondence. Early in the new year, residents received input forms from Canada Post, asking for feedback about the coming changes, and the phasing out of door-to-

School district not giving up on budget talks Jessica Peters The Progress Despite low attendance at a similar event last year, the Chilliwack School Board will once again hold a public budget presentation in an effort to educate the community about the process. School District No. 33 is currently working with a budget of almost $130 million, and the presentation will offer insight into interesting line items such as

transportation and program costs, revenues, salaries and savings. The presentation will take place on March 5 at 7 p.m. at the Neighbouhood Learning Centre at Chilliwack secondary. It will take the same format as last year’s, and will outline the budget for the school district. It will also include information on projected enrolments, revenue, strategic plan and the larger items the school district is planning for.

In his report to the board, secretary treasurer Gerry Slykhuis said the idea behind the public presentation is to educate those in the community who want to learn more about the budget process. With that in mind, questions and comments are encouraged at the meeting. The decision to hold the meeting came from a earlier budget committee meeting comprising representatives from within the

education system. The board unanimously passed the decision to hold the presentation meeting at its regular meeting Tuesday night. Budget amendment

Legal marijuana in Blaine now short walk from B.C. Jeff Nagel Black Press Marijuana stores have been sprouting all over Washington State since retail trade in the drug was legalized in a referendum, but the first one has now opened within walking distance of the B.C. border. Evergreen Cannabis is aimed squarely at the Canadian market and its Blaine storefront at 922 Peace Portal Drive – with a sign that reads “recreational marijuana store” – is within sight of both the Peace Arch and White Rock. “I know I am controversial because I am close to the border,” owner Jake Lamont, a Birch Bay resident, told Black Press this week. To the U.S. border guards stationed just to the north, marijuana remains an illegal drug under federal law, even though it’s been more than two years since the state voted to legalize possession by adults of up to an ounce and license a network of growers and retailers. “I don’t worry about it any more,” said Lamont, who expects the Washington and Colorado legalization experiment will be replicated across the U.S. But he warns his Canadian customers to be careful – bringing weed back to B.C. can result in seizure and criminal charges. “I let them know ‘Don’t take this across any borders, keep it in the state,’” he said. Evergreen’s dried pot, priced at $18.83 a gram, comes with warning labels advising it’s for consumption in Washington State only. But that poses a challenge for cannabis tourists coming from B.C. “The problem is what you do with it once you buy it – where do you smoke it?” asked Blaine immigration lawyer Len Saunders. “You’re not supposed to be smoking it in public.” Saunders also advises Canadian pot enthusiasts to be careful how they answer questions from U.S. border authorities. “If you admit you’re coming down to buy marijuana or that

you’ve ever smoked marijuana in the past, you’re going to get denied entry – period.” Visitors who deny plans to go pot shopping may be taking a risk if they then immediately park at the nearby pot store, he added. “It’s literally under the noses of the federal government,” Saunders said. “That’s the irony of this – that it’s still illegal federally but you can buy it within walking distance of the border.” Lamont said he and his partners are considering opening a private club for marijuana users in Blaine to offer customers a legal smoking lounge. “It’s necessary for people who are traveling, on vacation or whatnot to have a place for them to go,”

Lamont said. “And it’s especially important to Canadians who are going to be my main clientele.” The new store is one of more than 100 marijuana retailers and 300 growers that have been licensed in Washington since a 56 per cent state vote in favour of Initiative 502 on recreational marijuana reform in 2012. B.C. pot activists hope Washington’s experience adds momentum to their agenda to reform Canada’s policy on marijuana. Crash claims driver One person is dead and another in hospital after a twovehicle crash Thursday morning on Highway 1 in Abbotsford just east of the Whatcom Road exit. According to RCMP Traffic Services, witnesses reported an unsafe lane change and aggressive driving was a contributing factor in a collision between two vehicles heading west on Highway 1 around 5:45 a.m. One of the vehicles, a dark-coloured sedan, entered the median, and the male lone occupant, who wasn’t wearing his seatbelt, was thrown from the vehicle and killed. The female lone occupant of the second vehicle was taken to hospital for assessment. Police have not released the name or age of the deceased driver, but there are reports he was from Chilliwack. Police also are unable to say which of the vehicles was reported to have been driving aggressively prior to the crash. Fraser Valley Traffic Services is continuing with the investigation, with assistance from the Integrated Collision Analyst and Reconstructionist Services (ICARS) and the Coroner. Abbotsford Police Department and Fire Rescue Service also responded. “Our thoughts go out to the family who lost their loved one this morning. The RCMP would like to remind the public of the importance of always wearing your seatbelt,” said Cpl. Ronda Rempel of RCMP Traffic Services. The accident prompted the closure of a lane of westbound Highway 1 and caused significant traffic backups. The closed lane was re-opened around 11:30 a.m.

and get a pen and paper and I’ll give you my information.’ And the next thing you know you hear his car starting and he sped off.” They never got his name, and in their concern for their dog, they never even saw the cab number on the car. Chilliwack Taxi is not denying the fact one of their drivers fatally hit the dog, but they are attempting to make peace with Phare and her family. “This is upsetting,” Singh said in a phone interview on Wednesday. He was trying to hear both sides of the story, from the driver and from Phare, to come to some sort of conclusion. “He said he did apologize to the owner and that when the RCMP told him to leave, he left,” Singh said. “But on Facebook it says no one apologized. Those things are contradictory. There are very strong emotions around this but I had to talk to my driver first.” Singh is a dog lover himself, and wanted to send his apologies in person. “I do respect that a dog is a family member, and my heart goes out to that,” he said. “I really do appreciate what they have gone through and I will apologize.” He made that call while The Progress listened in. During the call, he apologized several times. “I need to know from your side what happened,” he said to Phare. She told him the story from start to finish. As they discussed the two different versions of the stories, they decided to give some more time to each think about what could heal the situation. “What can Chilliwack Taxi do for you?” Singh said. “I know what is done cannot be undone, but are there still ways we can stop these strong emotions.” “I don’t know,” said Phare. “I need to know from you,” Singh pushed. Phare took a second, grief still fresh in her voice. “We’ve had her since she was four weeks old,” she said. “I totally understand that, these are our family

accident and not something they are taking lightly. “This is a mishap and I have myself been driving for 12 years and in the office here for three years,” Singh said. “I have my family here to raise my children in this community and this is our livelihood. One bad thing doesn’t mean that Chilliwack Taxi’s bad.” For Phare, nothing so far has eased her pain. “I’m not thinking clearly right now, I’m still in shock,” she said. “I’m busy getting rid of blankets and toys. I asked him if we can talk another time.”

Fraud arrest made Chilliwack RCMP have arrested a man they believe has been preying on residents who were trying to help him. Donald Robert Quinnell is facing multiple fraud charges after numerous complaints of a man appearing at their door and asking for money. According to police the man allegedly asked for a ride to the hospital, money for an ambulance, or assistance to retrieve an impounded vehicle. During the discussions, RCMP allege, he would also steal other items from the victims. “We are pleased to announce that Mr. Quinnell was arrested in relation to these incidents,” said Cst. Ashley St. Germaine. “This

man is believed to have committed many of these incidents during the holiday season, thus taking advantage of the public’s generosity during that time of giving.” Donald Quinnell has been charged with multiple counts of Fraud under $5,000, Theft under $5,000 and Identity theft. He is currently remanded in custody to appear in court later this month. The Chilliwack RCMP wants to encourage the public to be on guard when receiving calls or visits from strangers and report any suspicious activity. Having a long standing interest in the health care industry and recognizing the growing need for health services for an aging population, Patricia decided to pursue employment as a Health Care Aid Worker.

Wolf cull raises questions In 1973, the first working meeting of wolf specialists met at the first International Conference on the Conservation of the Wolf hosted by IUCN and the World Wildlife Fund in Stockholm, Sweden. Among many recommendations, the group stated that “Where wolf control measures are necessary, they should be imposed under strict scientific management, and the methods used must be selective, highly discriminatory, of limited time duration, and have minimum side-effects on other animals in the ecosystem.” So here we are 40 years later still thinking it’s a good idea to shoot wolves as a conservation measure, this time to protect caribou. Is that a good idea? Two regions are targeted and they include the South Peace which supports seven distinct caribou herds with a combined population of approximately 970 animals and the South Selkirk region where a single herd has declined to a population of only 18 as at March 2014. Wolf numbers in the province, though, are at a healthy level with a median population of 8,500. The goal is to increase the South Peace caribou to over 1,200 animals and increase the Selkirk population which ranges across the U.S. border into Washington and Idaho. Yes, evidence points to wolf predation on these endangered herds. They are predators. That’s what they do. But habitat fragmentation

and multi-use by industry (logging and road-building) and recreation (snowmobiling and backcountry ski-ing) have also contributed to stresses on the vulnerable herds. Now the Ministry of Forestry, Lands, and Natural Resource Operations plans to shoot 120 to 160 wolves from a helicopter in the South Peace and 24 wolves in the South Selkirk regions before snow melt. The humane optics Margaret have many people EVANS cringing. But do culls actually work? Some fascinating research at Washington State University on the impact of wolf culls and livestock has shown that the practice can actually be counter-productive and result in more livestock kills. According to wildlife biologist Rob Wielgus and his colleague data analyst Kaylie Peebles lethal control has been a “widely accepted but untested hypothesis.” For each wolf killed, the odds of more livestock depredations increase significantly. Their study was published in the journal PLOS ONE. Their study is the largest of its kind, analyzing 25 years of lethal control data from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services Interagency Annual Wolf Reports in Montana, Wyoming and Idaho. They found that killing one wolf increases the

odds of depredations 4 per cent for sheep and 5 to 6 per cent for cattle the following year. If 20 wolves are killed, livestock deaths double. Wielgus said the wolf killings likely disrupt the social cohesion of the pack. Their complex social structure is composed of the alpha breeding pair, their pups, and subordinates adults that were the pups from previous years. While an intact breeding pair will keep young offspring from mating, disruption such as the shooting of the alpha animals can set sexually mature wolves free to breed, leading to an increase in breeding pairs. As they all have pups, each family unit is more bound to one place where they must hunt opportunistically. In Wielgus and Peebles’ study, those hunts included occasionally taking more livestock. So would the cascade effect of the current cull in British Columbia mean more wolf packs could take more caribou? Previous studies of Wielgus found that lethal controls of cougars also backfire, disrupting populations so much that younger, less disciplined cougars attack more livestock. Ongoing studies in Washington include various methods of nonlethal wolf control as they relate to livestock protection. Here, more research is needed to find effective non-lethal wolf control methods to manage vulnerable wildlife species.

To Coast Capital Savings, The Education Centre wants to thank Coast Capital Savings for the generous support they have shown us over the years. The Education Centre has been running since the 1990’s it has grown substantially over the years. There are many specialized programs within our school which are designed to meet the unique needs and challenges of our students. Many of the unique needs of our students have not been factored into the Ministry of Education’s budget. We want to thank Coast Capital Savings for their support with the startup costs for our unique art programs that are therapeutic and enhance social and emotional well-being of our students. Their generosity has also allowed students access to personal grooming kits, health and wellness and nutrition programs, which prepare the students for healthy living. With this funding students have more opportunities to get involved in experiential hands on projects as well as work experience. It has given students access to field trips as we can now afford extra bussing for field trips allowing students to now have the opportunity to learn outside of the classroom and in their community. These opportunities have improved students emotional development and built their self-confidence as well as improving their health and wellness. Actions speak louder than words Spoken Word event showcases power of emotions Jessica Peters The Progress Spoken word poetry has a tendency to turn everyday feelings into captivating emotions. Much stronger than the written word, a poem tumbling out of a writer’s mouth becomes a performance piece. For the audience, there is no looking away. At Spoken Word: Behind the Curtain at Sardis secondary during a lunch hour this week, nine young poets take turns the microphone. As they each steady themselves under the spotlight, they are embodied by their poems. Emotions that would usually be contained within the lines on the

page launch out like missiles into the darkened room. Innuendo and double meanings are shared with a knowing look. Empathy is drawn with soft voices and pleading eyes. Their actions speak much louder than their carefully thought out words. So much so, that when Hyacinth Lithgow steps to the mic her anger grows hotter than hellfire. And when Siobhan Robinson addresses sadness, she becomes heart-breaking, full-body sorrow. And even when Fay Ewing cracks wise, challenging the norm on love and marriage, the audience is in her palm and they

rock with laughter that she alone created. It can’t be easy, but these poets pull off the job like professionals. Over the course of a lunch break, in the sliver of space behind the main stage, the poets tell a collective story of youth. They’ve written about the ridiculousness of philosophy, bad relationships and self esteem. They speak about physical abuse and suicide with shivering, cold truth in their voices. In the isolation of the spotlight, the poets can share their deepest thoughts with an understanding peer group. In her piece Red Rum, Kelsey Carlson tells them “I should be shooting toward my destiny like a bullet from a gun,” with the

William McKnight, who emceed Wednesday’s event, said standing up for a Spoken Word reading is akin to “180 minutes of terror.” There are a few rules to follow. For one, there is no clapping during the performances. To show their appreciation for a turn of phrase or masterful pacing, the audience is told to snap. The effect is a muffled version of applause that doesn’t interrupt the poet at work. And there are rules for the poets, namely, not to ramble on. The time limit is three minutes a piece, a standard for spoken word competitions. The group plans to hold the

event once a month at lunch, as a way of supporting each other in their writing and gaining the experience of performing in front of an audience. He wants the community to know there are talented writers, toiling away at their craft on the sides of their school desks. Some of them are already published authors, others are just testing the waters. But anyone who appreciates spoken word and poetry are welcome in the group, he says. McKnight is hoping they can draw out bigger audiences and more poets. “We tend to think that nothing ever happens here,” McKnight says. “But there are students here doing something great.”

Good hearing, poor comprehension? The number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. This is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newlydeveloped hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear. A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. This means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the highfrequency range makes speech sound muffled and unclear. The person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. The dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not

A new hearing chip has been developed.

The test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. The chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and amplifies only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. Thanks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this significantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.

All that sparkles at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show By Alexandra Straub

Detroit, MI – Within moments of pulling out of a parking lot in the 2015 Cadillac CTS 3.6L AWD, its pristine crimson coat was soiled by the elements. And of course, salt, dirt, grime

and all that isn’t amazing about winter in Toronto. Nevertheless, its smooth and comfortable ride didn’t disappoint along the arduous and incredibly four-plus-hour drive to Detroit, Michigan for the 2015 North American Interna-

tional Auto Show (NAIAS.) I would soon trade in the coziness of heated leather seats – and steering wheel – for a pair of not-so-cozy leather shoes and roam the showfloor to check out what’s hot, cool and what sparkles amidst the

industry’s top cars. It would only make sense to start with Cadillac’s latest offering when it comes to their “V” series cars. At the Los Angeles Auto Show in late 2014, we met the ATSV – the smaller brother of the

mid-sized four-door I drove to Motown. Now, get ready for a performance sedan that will knock your socks off. Cadillac CTS-V: Arriving late in the summer of 2015, the 2016 Cadillac CTS-V is ready to take on its German

competitors (like the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG) with a whopping 640 horsepower and 630 lb-ft of torque. The all-new third generation sedan is the most powerendowed product the brand

has ever created. But aside from power, you’ll have the luxury of the third generation Magnetic Ride Control to not only blast you through the corners with grace and poise, but with the comfort of being able to drive it around town, or between cities/countries without sacrificing an enjoyable ride. Road or track, I’ll take this one for a spin any day. Acura NSX: Perhaps one of the most anticipated reveals of the last few years from the Japanese automaker, Acura, comes in the form of the NSX. The acronym, which stands for New Sports eXperience, rolled out onto the stage to a frenzy of flashes from the crowd. Heck, even funnyman, Jerry Seinfeld, couldn’t miss the reveal as he sat in the front row awaiting its presence. While pricing hasn’t been released yet, it’ll likely be north of $150K. But, for that price, you get a vehicle that not only delivers gargantuan power, but one that is hybridized thanks to an all-new power unit. That unit is a twin-turbocharged, 75-degree DOHC V6 engine with a 9-speed dual clutch transmission (DCT) and three-electric motor Sport Hybrid system. Not to mention Acura’s SuperHandling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD), so it’s a perfect supercar for all seasons. Chevrolet Volt: Speaking of electric motors, Chevrolet gave us a preview of the 2016 Volt. With a longer EV range and a lighter body, not to mention a new design, this plug-in hybrid is sure to win even more hearts over. Highlights include an EV range of up to 80 km, a new two-motor drive unit, which is now up to 12 percent more efficient and 45 kg (100 lb) lighter than the first-generation drive unit, and a new 1.5L range extender, designed to use regular unleaded fuel, offering a GM-estimated combined fuel consumption rating of 5.7L/100km. Lexus NXB Concept Bike Completely changing gears, atop one of Lexus’ sparking vehicle at their stand was a concept bike that caught my eye. Not only because it was totally out of place at an auto show, but also because it looks so cool. NXB stands for Neo Xtreme Bike and comes with a Lexus original carbon frame, carbon wheels and a KYB inverted suspension up front. Even if it never is ridden, I still like the idea of a zero-emissions commute on something as interesting as this concept. Chevrolet Bolt EV Concept For a zero emissions commute that doesn’t require muscles but rather a motor, the Chevrolet Bolt EV Concept is another step in the brand’s commitment to the electrification of automobiles.

Based on the GS mid-sized luxury sedan, the GS F takes things to a much more aggressive level, with a 467hp 5.0L V8 engine pushing all that power through an 8-speed automatic to the rear wheels. Lexus hopes this 1830kg sedan will be lean enough and powerful enough to attract buyers of cars like the BMW M5. With standard 19-inch wheels framing orange Brembo brake calipers and featuring a Torque Vectoring Differential, Lexus thinks this Nurburgring tuned sedan is a more than enough to take on the German dominant brands. Styling is dramatic and functional with a lower and wider stance than the regular model. Volkswagen Golf: The Detroit show always starts with the announcement of the North American Car of the Year. The Golf is on sale now. 2015 Toyota Tacoma: The Detroit-three automakers might have the lion’s share of full size pickup sales but it’s the Toyota Tacoma mid-size pickup that rules the road, outselling the competition two-to-one. Announced at the Detroit show is a heavily updated Tacoma with a new 3.5L V6, replacing the old 4.0L V6, plus either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. The engine features direct injection technology and should vastly improve fuel economy. The chassis has been strengthened and the interior updated to today’s standards. The tailgate now has a locking feature and a soft open for easier use, plus the optional cargo bed cover can be secured as well. Also shown was the TRD off-road version, which is a big seller for Toyota and for 2015 it has a crawl feature to aid in off-road adventures, plus a go-pro camera mount to capture all the action. With these updated the latest Tacoma is sure to remain dominant.

Even in winter, your garden can smell delicious I’ve seen people stop dead in their tracks at this time of year, attempting to discover the source of an amazing perfume. Wow, perfume in January and February? You bet! The best source of winter fragrance is a rather unassuming green plant that is often used as a ground cover or small hedge. It’s commonly called ‘Sweet Box’ because of its similarity to boxwood, but in botanical terms

It prefers partial or full shade for its best performance but if it has to, it will take sun with the consequence of more yellow foliage instead of rich shiny deep green leaves. Sarcococcas are a ‘must have’ in winter containers or porch pots outside your door or wherever you will have the most exposure to their intense perfume. Although sarcococ-

Chilliwack Outdoor Club hears from SAR members The Chilliwack Outdoor Club will meet at Mt. Slesse Middle School, 5871 Tyson Road at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, January 26. Guest speaker for the evening is Doug Fraser and Josef Seywerd of Chilliwack Search and Rescue. The pair will have a short video/slide show on their operation and will be bringing out some of their rescue equipment to demonstrate. The Chilliwack Outdoor Club draws members from across Canada who participate in non-motorized outdoor activities as far away as Scotland, Hawaii and Morroco. Weekly local outings are also planned. Hemlock hosts third annual Slopes for Hope Brenda Anderson Black Press Striking a blow in the fight against cancer can be as simple as strapping on a pair of skis and pointing them downhill. And then doing it 21 more times. The third annual Slopes for Hope fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society takes place at Hemlock Valley Resort on Sunday, Feb. 8. The event is a great opportunity for Fraser Valley skiers and snowboarders to put together a team and enjoy the Family Day weekend, while doing their bit to help, said the Cancer Society’s Nicola Romaniuk. Once again, Slopes for Hope participants are challenged to raise money — through pledges or lump sum donations — for the Canadian Cancer Society and then attempt to ski or board the vertical equivalent of Mount Everest (29,029 feet) — the world’s highest peak — in a single day. At Hemlock, that translates to 22 runs which, for the purposes of the challenge, can be completed by a single person or divided among teammates. Last year, two skiers accomplished the feat individually, said Romaniuk. Speed demons and snow plowers are equally welcome, because both the hill and the event are suitable for every level of skier and

snowboarder, she said. “You can challenge yourself if you want, or just get out and enjoy the day.” Hemlock is one of five B.C. mountains hosting a Slopes for Hope fundraiser this year. Locally, 45 people participated in last year’s event, raising $14,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society. This year’s goal is $15,000. Money raised at Hemlock will stay in the Fraser Valley to help pay for programs, including the society’s volunteer driver program, and sending kids to Camp Goodtimes, Romaniuk explained. The cost to send a single child to camp is $1,500, but through fundraisers such as Slopes for Hope, the experience can be offered at no charge to local families who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis or treatment. “If we raise $15,000, that sends 10 kids to camp.” Among those hitting the slopes on Feb. 8 will be Langley’s Stirling Noyes, a twotime cancer survivor who attended Camp Goodtimes every summer, from age seven to 16. Although he has fond memories of his summers spent at camp, Noyes doesn’t recall much about his first goround with cancer. He was just six years old when he was diagnosed with leukemia. He does remember being sick and undergoing three years of

chemotherapy, along with radiation treatment before he went into remission. At 23, Noyes’s cancer returned. This time it was in his brain. The graphic designer who lives in Walnut Grove was just minutes from getting into his vehicle and driving, he said, when he began feeling woozy — as though he was drunk. “My wife said ‘sit down,’ and the next thing I knew, I was being loaded into an ambulance.” He was admitted to Langley Memorial Hospital, and was alone in a washroom there when another seizure hit. This time he woke up at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. After undergoing scans and an MRI, Noyes was diagnosed with type 3 astrocytoma — a brain tumour. It was aggressive, but hadn’t metastasized. Because the tumour — likely the result of radiation therapy he underwent during his treatment for leukemia — had spread throughout a section of his brain, it couldn’t be removed surgically, said Noyes. Another 18 months of oral chemotherapy (pills) followed. Noyes, now 30, has been in remission for a little over three years — a measure of time that is “a big deal” in cancer treatment, he said. He continues to take antiseizure medication. This year marks the

Langley man’s second time participating in Slopes for Hope. On Feb. 8, he will ski as part of a team of five, which also includes his wife, brother, sister-inlaw and a friend. “It will be lots of fun. It’s a good day,” said Noyes. “It’s not hard. You raise $100, you ski for the day.” In addition to participating in the event, he has also put together a DVD presentation which will be shown at the event, and is using social media to promote Slopes for Hope. “I’m a big proponent of research. It’s very important that money goes to research and to Camp Goodtimes, to help kids in my situation and to find a cure,” said Noyes. “Stirling is the epitome of a Canadian Cancer Society volunteer,” said Romaniuk. “It’s volunteers like Stirling who make our organization what it is.” A minimum contribution of $100 earns Slopes for Hope participants a lift pass to ski all day, with the first lift going up at 8 a.m. Prizes will be awarded for top fundraisers, including a two-night stay at Hemlock’s Snowflake Resort. Equipment is available for rent on the mountain and participants are encouraged to jazz up their gear with crazy costumes. Registration is now open. Valley women’s basketball team comes into sharper focus. It’s becoming apparent that the six-foot-two centre from Chilliwack, now in her fifth and final season of eligibility, isn’t just one of the greatest players in UFV history – she’s one of the all-time elite players in the Canada West conference. Case in point is her ascent up the conference’s career rebounding list. Wierks started the season in ninth place all-time and has risen to third place with 908 rebounds, just four shy of second-place Janis Paskevich (912). It’s highly likely she will pass Paskevich, the former Calgary Dinos star (1977-1982), during tonight’s game at home vs. the UBC

Okanagan Heat (6 p.m. tip-off, Envision Athletic Centre). First place is out of reach – Canada West’s all-time rebounding leader is Sarah Crooks of the Saskatchewan Huskies (2002-07), and Wierks would have to grab 34.1 boards per game to match Crooks’s eye-popping total of 1,181. Further breaking down Wierks’s caromcollecting prowess, she’s currently third on the Canada West career list for offensive rebounds (385), sixth in defensive boards (523), and her per-game average of 10.68 combined rebounds is fourth-best all-time. She’s 42nd on the career points list with 1,187, and is on pace to finish well inside the top 30.

She’s also primed to break the record for most conference games started (on pace for 105). During her remarkable senior season, she’s registered doubledoubles for points and rebounds in 10 of 12 games, lifting her to second on the Canada West all-time doubledoubles list with 35. Her conference-leading rebounding average this season (13.8) would tie her for the second-best single-season average on record. In similar fashion, Wierks is rewriting the Cascades’ team record book. Since UFV joined Canada West in 200607, Wierks is the women’s basketball team’s all-time leader in points (1,187), field goals made (417), free

throws made (347) and attempted (487), and blocked shots (84) in conference play. She’s also poised to set single-season marks for scoring average (19.6) and field goal percentage (53.2), and to shatter her own records for total rebounds and rebounding average in a season. Head coach Al Tuchscherer points out that UFV’s current streak of four straight trips to the Canada West Final Four began when Wierks arrived in 2010-11. “She’s passing people who, when we first got into the CIS, were kind of untouchable players,” he noted. “Players who we didn’t know how to defend or compete against. And she’s among those players now.”

Wierks, who also happens to be in line for her fourth Academic All-Canadian nod. W ierks and Tuchscherer agreed that her breakthrough performance this season has coincided with a change in mind-set. “Before, I was always anxious about my game and that I wouldn’t get to where my goals were,” she explained. “This year, I’ve just gone about it really loose . . . Letting it go and not worrying about it has definitely been beneficial.” “I think it’s a fifthyear thing,” Tuchscher concluded. “You see a lot of players get to that point – where they’re still super-competitive, but they’re at peace with their career.” Get UFV info at ufvcascades.ca

Jacob Bestebroer Chilliwack’s 4-3 loss to the Rivermen in Langley Wednesday could be one to remember when the playoffs begin. It was a tough loss, in that the Chiefs played well and led 3-2 after two periods. The winning goal was a strange one. Goaltender David Jacobson came out to play the puck behind his own net and a few seconds later the puck was in the cage. The win gave the Rivermen the most points (53) in the Mainland division. The Chiefs are now one point back but the good news for Chilliwack is that they have played three fewer games. But here’s where Wednesday’s loss could prove costly. Should the two teams finish tied in points, the first tie breaker is total wins. Should they also tie in total wins the next tie breaker is points earned in games between the two teams. After seven head to head games Langley has nine points on four wins and an overtime loss. Chilliwack has six points on three wins. They play each other just once more. While it looks like the Chiefs and Rivermen will finish first and second in the division, it’s by no means guaranteed. Prince George is eight points back of the Chiefs, and if they can win each of their remaining games against Chilliwack in regulation, they could make it interesting. Unlikely maybe, but the Seattle Seahawks recently proved that anything can happen in sports. It’s been quite the week for Chiefs forward Jordan Kawaguchi. Hand’s goal Saturday night was incredible. The video really took off on Wednesday, going from 14,000 online views to over 45,000 views. It was also shown by TSN and ESPN in the United States. His week to remember continued Tuesday night when he scored a goal in the CJHL’s Prospects Game in Ontario. It’s been just over four years since I first saw Kawaguchi play. The Abbotsford AAA bantam team was stacked that season, one of the best in Western Canada. At a game mid season at MSA Arena they

had a different player in the lineup. Really small and really skilled. He wasn’t listed on any lineup sheets that I could find, so it wasn’t till the third period that I found out it was Kawaguchi, called up from the tier

two bantam team. He was 13 years old, but I had never seen a first year bantam player that good not playing at the highest level of bantam hockey available to him. While I would have

never predicted a crazy week like this for him, it was obvious from that one game that the kid would go on to be a very good junior hockey player.

It is with sadness as well as gratitude that we acknowledge the life of Hazel Etta Spencer. Hazel passed on peacefully and with dignity in the early morning of January 14th, 2015 after suffering a heart attack. She was surrounded by love. Hazel is predeceased by her husband John-Fife Spencer and survived by sons Randy, Chris (Mariko), daughters Barbara (Peter Wardell) and Sydney (Don Cuthill), as well as her adored grandchildren Anne and Tait Cuthill. She is also survived by her sister Wilma Bibey of Montreal, brother Mike Atkinson of Edmonton and numerous loved nieces and nephews. Born April 7, 1925 in Pointe du Chene, New Brunswick, Hazel’s career with TCA took her from New Brunswick to Gander and then to Vancouver where she met John, the love of her life. Together, they worked tirelessly and very happily at the beautiful Aberthau Farm in Rosedale B.C., where they welcomed all who dropped by with open arms. An absolute love of family, an incredible sense of humour, a strong will and stronger friendships are some of the traits that Hazel will be remembered for. The family wishes to recognize the outstanding care Hazel received at Delta Hospital. All of you, and in particular Dr. Kordic, went above and beyond to provide only the best care. Thank you. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Beach Grove Golf Course at 5946 12th Avenue, Tsawwassen B.C. at 1:30 p.m. on Friday January 30, 2015.
