selection of Aquatic Fitness programs that will get your heart rate up but will do so in a low impact manner. For those with mobility, post-injury or surgical rehabilitation issues, we recommend our medically-supervised REACT program, which includes 30 minutes of guided group exercise and 30 minutes of independent prescribed movement (medical referral required). And the grand finale when the workout is over; reward yourself with a relaxing dip in the hot tub or a soothing sit in our sauna or steam room. Janice Perrino MEDICAL FOUNDATION

Thank you! The words never seem like enough! Especially to all of the people who made donations to support the Penticton Regional Hospital’s Christmas equipment campaign for 20 new beds and mattresses through the South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation. However, we wondered if the public would understand the basic need for state of the art beds and mattresses. These beds have the ability to weigh patients as they lie down, the beds have lights and alarms to guide and protect patients when they get out of bed and the mattresses are so comfortable and the material less-

ens skin tears and helps to reduce pain. In fact every donor understood the need for comfort and safety and as of Jan. 12, $360,000 was raised, enough to purchase 30 beds. The surgical department needed 25 beds and the balance of beds will be for the south pavilion medical floors. There aren’t enough words to express our sincere thank you to everyone for your donation. So what’s in store for 2015? The South Okanagan Similkameen Medical Foundation is preparing to raise $20 million dollars for the medical equipment in the Patient Care Tower, with the hospital expansion planned to start construction in the spring of 2016. We are beginning talks with our major donors, corporate affiliations, service clubs and the auxiliaries. We are now able to provide details about naming and sponsorship opportunities in the new hos-

pital, everything from naming a clinic to a patient room, or perhaps a surgical suite, the UBCO medical school, or even the new building itself. There will be several incredible ways to leave a legacy to your family or business in the new Patient Care Tower. We believe one of the more popular ways to make a gift will be through a pledge with the Medical Foundation over a period of years. An example of this is that you pledge to give $2,000 every year for five years to make a total gift of $10,000. To make a profound gift of $100,000, you might pledge $20,000 per year for five years and for some, a gift of $200,000 every year for five years to make an outstanding contribution of $1 million dollars or more. The pledge is a document between yourself and the Medical Foundation and occasionally with profound gifts, your financial and or legal

It is time to talk with your family, your friends and your business associates for their ideas on how to make a significant gift and meet the communities’ commitment to the Penticton Regional Hospital, to the medical staff and how to make sure that our region has the best health care possible for decades to come. Eat well and get moving

Sandra Turnbull

Nutrition When Rose got married she prided herself that she fit into a size six wedding gown. But as the years passed and she nostalgically tried on the dress again, it got tighter and tighter. As the years packed on, so did the pounds — particularly after Rose reached 60. Even though she still ate the same and was active, Rose couldn’t seem to stop the unwanted weight creep. Oddly enough, Rose didn’t feel unhealthy. Should she be concerned? Should she strive to get back to that svelte size six? It turns out that a little extra padding on seniors can actually be a good thing. As our bodies age, our metabolism begins to slow down and we need less energy. Hormonal changes result in a shift to more body fat and less muscle mass. For many, like Rose, this can lead to an increase in weight. Recent studies have found that what is considered a normal healthy weight in younger and middle age populations does not seem to apply to seniors. Indeed those in the overweight category (a BMI between 25 and 29.9) are less likely to die than those in the normal weight range. Many researchers are suggesting that the current ideal weight, as measured by BMI, is perhaps too restrictive for older people. Hallelujah! Let’s sit on the

Older adults who want to stay healthy, independent, and enjoy a more vibrant lifestyle need to get moving. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) recommend four types of exercises: • Strength exercises maintain or build muscle which helps you carry out your day to day activities as well as reduce signs and symptoms of many chronic health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and depression. • Balance exercises helps to prevent falls and can help you stay independent. • Stretching exercises can give you more freedom of movement, which will allow you to be more active. • Endurance exercises are any activity — walking, jogging, swimming, biking, even raking leaves — that increase your heart rate and breathing for an extended period of time. Eating well along with getting ourselves moving ensures we will have optimal energy and feel our best.

Make sure your diet includes plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, choose more whole grains (vs. processed) and include a good source of protein at each meal. And of course, be sure to savour some yummy ice cream from time to time. While we may be able to worry a little less about our weights, eating smart and moving more can enrich and prolong our lives. Arts Scene We all know about IQ and have a certain idea of where we might fit, or taken an IQ test and know exactly. Yet not many of us know about, or have even heard about, our CQ! What’s that?, you are now asking. It is our Creativity Quotient. Inside all of us there is a strong element of creativity. A desire to express ourselves in a different, perhaps more meaningful way. Remember when you were just a child and you had more fun creatively making tunnels and buildings from the empty boxes the Christmas presents came in than you had playing with the new toys? And how many movies or plays have you seen that you wished you had acted in? What

about singing along, playing an instrument — for instance the drums — or painting, making pottery. And, all those poems and stories dwelling inside you have always wanted to be put down on paper That’s not all that creativity is about though. How about parts of the world you have always wanted to visit? You have always wanted to go to China, visit the Artic before all the ice is gone, visit the Vatican or Machu Pichu, or even bicycle across Canada, at least part way. Take part in controversial conversations about politics, religion, or books you have read. There are many more unfulfilled creative wishes within us, we just don’t give them a chance to emerge. How can you discover these? The Okanagan School for the Arts at the Shatford Centre in Penticton is starting a series — Creative For Life program — for those not so young that will provide an opportunity to check out some of your creative dreams. Several workshops — painting, pottery, writing recollections, acting, music and many more will be held at the Shatford Centre in the coming months. We can

pretty much guarantee there will be something there that will appeal to you and turn on your inner creativity. To see what is available check the program calendar at www.osarts.com. What is stopping us? Often it is fear that we can’t paint or make pottery well enough, we can’t write well enough to tell our stories, or can’t afford to travel. Our fears are groundless. The only things stopping us from being the creative people we can become is the wrong stories we keep in our minds,. We might think people would make fun of me or what I do, the outcome of what I try will be awful, or, my family will think I have gone crazy. There also could be the thought of what if my attempt is a failure? What is the answer to all these? As you have heard many times, life is a journey and so is creativity. It’s like running a marathon. It doesn’t matter if you win, it matters if you finish, or do better than last time. And that is what creativity is all about. It is in the doing and as time goes by, yes, it does get better and better, more fun, more fulfilling. See CREATIVE on PG. 7

Open up your creative desires From CREATIVE on PG. 6 If we don’t explore our creative desires, intuitions, and secret longings we will not have lived life fully. As we get older and don’t do creative things life becomes more and more boring and often leads to depression and an early demise. How do you get started? Sit quietly and just think about it. Let your imagination run wild for a while. What is your heart and mind telling you? I have always wanted to be in a play, I would really like to become a great nature photographer and do a documentary of my grandchildren as they grow up, it would be fun to do pottery and make presents for all my family for Christmas. The list might be endless. Then you decide which ones do you really want to do. A suggestion: limit it to three then do some research to see what is available, when, where and how much will it cost. Then go and talk to people. Others taking the program and/or the teachers, then make the choice that feels just right for you!

So turn on the CQ within you and enjoy the richly fulfilling, pleasurable and personal journey it will take you on. Creative Living workshops are held on Tuesdays at 1:30 p.m. at the Shatford Centre. We will explore together the 10 major areas of planning your years from now on: social connections, where to live, ongoing learning, physical activity, working or volunteering, creative activity, travel, family relations, health and finances. Plan to attend. For information on this workshop and other Creative For Life Programs call 250770-7668, email info@osarts.com or visit the course and registration website at www. osarts.com. Milton Orris is on the Board of Directors for the Okanagan School of the Arts (OSA) and chairs OSA’s Programming Committee. He is enthusiastically leading the development of the Creative For Life Program for ‘people who weren’t born yesterday.’ You are invited to his Creative Living workshops being held at the Shatford Centre.
