T
he group of about 25 waiting in the lobby of the Abbotsford courthouse on Tuesday morning is in stark contrast to the lawyers and sheriffs usually walking the hall. These men and women sport denim, chaps, and black leather vests with patches bearing their “road names,” including Rebel, Animal, Wheel Man, Silver Bullet and Mama Bear. A patch on the back of their vests reads, “No child deserves to live in fear.” They mill about, chatting quietly, until a small group appears from one of the courtrooms and moves in their direction. The large group parts, allowing the family to sit, and then surrounds them protectively. They remain there until it is confirmed that the criminal case has been postponed for the day. Continued on A3

Closing credits about to roll for Towne Cinema Theatre with a 40-year history in Abbotsford will shut down on Feb. 7 A theatre with a history spanning 40 years in this community is set to close down next month. Towne Cinema Centre will be closed by the owner, Landmark Cinemas Canada, effective Feb. 7. Brian McIntosh, executive chairman of Landmark Cinemas Canada said, “We have put our very best efforts into operating our theatre in Abbotsford for many years now; however, due to the new movie market landscape that currently exists in Abbotsford, it is no longer a sustainable
business option for our company.” “We have enjoyed our connection to the local Abbotsford community very much. It goes without saying that a decision such as this is a challenging one to make. We are indeed sad to say goodbye,” said McIntosh, thanking staff, customers and business supporters in the community. The final day of business will be Saturday, Feb. 7. The bikers escort the distraught family out of the building and to their vehicle. The bikers mount their motorcycles and take their positions in front of and behind the family’s car, and then they all depart. This scene marked the first time that the newly formed Fraser Valley chapter of Bikers Against Child Abuse (BACA) supported a family in court. President James “Maddog” Bergin said BACA’s purpose is to “empower” kids who are the victims of physical and sexual abuse. The organization becomes involved when a parent or caregiver contacts them. They start with an “adoption ride” in which the entire membership meets up with the family and presents the child with a teddy bear and a vest sporting their own “road name.” Two members are assigned to become the child’s “primaries” and main contacts whom the child can call at any time. “If they’re scared at night, we’ll park two or three members outside of the home so they feel safe,” Bergin said. BACA members also attend court, accompanying the family to and from the courthouse and sitting in the courtroom when and if the child has to testify. Bergin said this provides the child with the physical and emotional support to get

This helps the child to feel as if he/she has “a whole army” behind him/her, Bergin said. All BACA members must pass through a series of steps, including an extensive background check and 12 to 14 hours of webinar training. Monthly meetings and ongoing courses are also included. They are given “road names,” and Bergin jokes that some of them don’t even know each others’ real names. Bergin said current members come from all walks of life and include business people, tattoo artists, truck drivers and mechanics. Many of them took the day off work to appear at the Abbotsford court-
house on Tuesday. Some, like “Loki,” have their own history of childhood abuse. “Some of my past wasn’t the greatest. I’ve been abused too, so I want to give back – to make sure (the abuse) stops,” he said in explaining why he is involved with BACA. Wheel Man said he finds his involvement rewarding. “We’re helping kids who are vulnerable and doing something that the cops can’t do,” he said. Bergin said although bikers have a stigma of being rough, he hopes people can look beyond that image. “For the most part, we are big and scary people when it’s applicable, but we are also some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet.” Bergin said Fraser Valley BACA, which formed about a year ago and is based in Abbotsford, plans to continue supporting the family who was in court on Tuesday, as well as link up with other families and agencies. Winning lottery ticket sold in Abbotsford Chilliwack man claims $1 million prize When Tawny Goldrick saw seven matching numbers and $1,000,000 on the lottery terminal screen, his first reaction was laughter and then disbelief, before realizing he had won a $1 million Maxmillion prize. The 24-year-old Chilliwack resident purchased tickets for the Jan. 9 Lotto Max draw at the 7-11 on McCallum Road in Abbotsford. The next day, while stopping for gas, he discovered one of those tickets made him a millionaire. “When I put my ticket in the scanner, it said $1 million. I chuckled to myself and thought, ‘Yeah,
right,’ ” he said. “I scanned it again and when it said the same number, I ran to the teller where she confirmed it. Every time someone came into the store I started yelling that I had won $1 million.” The aspiring rapper plans to celebrate his win by purchasing an apartment in Whistler and spending the winter snowboarding. Partial proceeds to youth commission An Abbotsford business is selling custom-designed T-shirts to raise bullying awareness, with partial proceeds supporting an Abbotsford youth organization. Instant Imprints is selling the shirts for $7, with $1 from each sale going to the Abbosford Youth Commission (AYC) to support youth initiatives. Store manager Blaine Maryniuk, himself a victim of bullying from ages five to 16, said that although much has been done in recent years to raise awareness of bullying in schools and the workplace, more must be done. “I was regularly victimized from Grade 1 to Grade 11, sometimes in ways that were humiliating and harmful. At the time there was no help, no support and no way out except to resort to violence,” he said. “That was over 30 years ago and my emotions still get stirred when I think about it.” He believes that schools, churches and community or-
ganizations such as the AYC can help. “Sadly, bullying has been around since the beginning of time and the only way to stop it is to make it known that it is not acceptable.” He believes businesses need to become involved as well. “Bullies are found in the workplace too – not just the schoolyard. Managers and owners of companies have a duty to call them out and to support staff who are their victims.” Maryniuk said wearing a T-shirt is only a step towards having meaningful conversations and educating people about the effects of bullying. He said it was through the intervention of his high school principal, who got him involved in leadership at his school and participating in community events, that he was able to come to terms with his situation. With the city’s animal control program now under regional authority, concerns about the new system were raised by a resident at council on Monday. Diane Davies, who has made numerous presentations to council on animal issues in the city, was critical of turning over animal control to the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD). She questioned why the city would subcontract its animal control and shelter instead of having its own. “Abbotsford city does not want to take the time and effort to set up an animal shelter,” said Davies. He said Davies made some wise recommendations with regard to signage and said it is important to help people know who to phone to get service. Coun. Patricia Ross said that with the changes to Abbotsford’s bylaws also come with improvements, including the FVRD regulations that include an anti-tethering clause, more animal control officers available to serve Abbotsford, a volunteer program and more. It wasn’t for lack of trying that Abbotsford doesn’t have a shelter, she said, adding the city made attempts for a couple of years but

Other Hand It is bizarre sometimes, how we are connected to others and to things. Last weekend through a blitz of spring cleaning, boxes of old photos were uncovered. Looking through them Saturday afternoon, laughing at the hairstyles and apparel of 20, 30 and more years ago, I came across a photo of my cousin’s daughter visiting from the U.K., sitting atop one of my horses. Other than a Facebook friend request a few years ago, I haven’t seen or thought of her since her family’s visit to Canada in 1990. Then on Sunday, and here’s where the bizarre comes in, “bonging� into my Facebook page was a photo of her visiting New York, taken the same day as I was looking at the 1990 picture.
Coincidence certainly, but in a way oddly disturbing. Disturbing too was the volume of clothing uncovered from various closets during cleaning/clearing. There was literally a small fortune in dresses, sweaters, hats, pants and at least two wedding dresses, most of which was barely worn, particularly the latter items. Since none of these garments have seen the light of day for decades, and at least in this family not likely ever to again, it was box and bundle everything for donation to the MCC. Uncovered also were various electronic devices whose obsolescence relegated them to the recycling depot along with old film cameras – can you even buy camera film anymore? – and a couple of typewriters. Today, typewriter ribbons must be even harder to find than film! For an inveterate hoarder, it’s difficult for me to part with stuff – there must be a use for this eventually – but when parts to make something work are no longer available, it is time for them to go.
What was uncovered, and will be kept, is a file of old clips of this column. I only read a couple of them, and found one rather prescient, written almost 30 years ago, referring to the upcoming Social Credit convention in Whistler, at which a new premier was to be selected. I won’t reprise the entire column, but

I read Gloria’s letter about her experience at Bateman Park over Christmas with interest. I visit the dog park regularly. I enjoy meeting new people and some old friends when I walk my dog through the trail system winding up at the dog park. It’s such a great place to let your dogs play and have good conversation. I have never had a concern about the safety of myself or my dog. I have never witnessed a problem until the day I saw a woman yelling about her dog being in an altercation with a pit bull. It was sad to see this woman so scared that she yanked her dog in the air causing it to yelp. Another woman stood at the fence yelling accusations and demanding the name of one young man. She claimed that it was his dog who bit the other dog. I found this interesting as his dog was certainly not a pit bull. This woman followed the man and his family out of the park and up the street. I wonder how his young kids felt with some irate woman yelling for no reason. Gloria said she has enjoyed the area for over 32 years. Some people have a hard time with change. A fundraiser to support the family of a fiveyear-old Abbotsford girl who is battling cancer is currently about $15,000 away from its $50,000 goal. The funds are being raised on a crowdfunding website in support of Greta Loewen and her parents Heather Munro and Tim Loewen. Greta was diagnosed in mid-December with a rare form of bone cancer known as Ewing’s sarcoma and is currently un-
dergoing treatment at BC Children’s Hospital. Her parents are unable to work as they spend time with Greta – whose treatment is expected to take about 10 months – and juggle caring for their three other children. The donated funds will help the family with their day-to-day expenses, as well as the costs of treatment for Greta that isn’t available in Canada. This includes two months of proton therapy in Boston. Although
the initial medical costs will be covered by the provincial government, the family will need to cover travel expenses, accommodation and any follow-up treatment. Columbia Kitchen Cabinets in Abbotsford has been among the biggest supporters of campaign, and they are challenging other businesses to get involved. Meanwhile, family friend Eileen Fisher said the amount of money collected at a massive bottle drive for the fam-
ily on Jan. 3 is still being tallied. “We were told by Regional Recycling that they have never seen a bottle drive like this, and it’s one of the biggest they have ever processed. They said the amount brought in was even bigger than public events they have done, like the Abbotsford Airshow,� she said. Fisher said people are continuing to drop off

their bottles at Regional Recycling, located at 750 Riverside Rd., and a special collection bin has been set up at the depot. Buskers to come to downtown Abby

The corners of downtown Abbotsford will soon be home to variety of buskers and street performers. The Abbotsford Downtown Business Association (ADBA) will begin issuing permits to those who would like to put their talents on display. Tina Stewart, executive director of the ADBA, said they brought in performers and buskers at last year’s Berrybeat Festival and had a lot of positive feedback. Those entertainers were from Vancouver, but Stewart said Abbotsford has many talented people who could help make the downtown’s streets more lively while showcasing local artists. “You see it on Granville Island, you see it in Pike Place Market, and it just makes the area so vibrant,” she said. Promoting local arts is something the ADBA is focusing on in the new year as they prepare to move to a new location with the Abbotsford Arts Council in the former MSA Centennial Library (33660 South Fraser Way). They are looking for any type of artist, including musicians, dancers, open air artists and more. The youngest age they will allow is 13 years old, and those 13 to 16 must have a parent or guardian present. There will be auditions initially, but Stewart said it’s unlikely people would be turned down. The ADBA has examined the programs at Granville Island and Pike Place to see how they can be adapted here. There will be certain restrictions on when people can perform and time limits for artists if others are waiting for a prime location.

Local man wins outstanding young farmer award Kerry and Anita Froese will represent B.C. in national competition An Abbotsford man who was “born to farm” is the recipient of the 2015 BC and Yukon Outstanding Young Farmer Award. Abbotsford chicken grower Kerry Froese and his wife Anita, both 37, received the prestigious award during a small ceremony in Abbotsford, Jan. 15.
Froese’s parents began with a broiler breeder and raspberry farm, later adding a broiler farm. After Froese began managing the farms in his teens, the family converted the entire operation to broilers. “Having multiple barns in multiple locations made manage-

Symphony presents ‘Beethoven and Schubert’ dramatic Piano Concerto in C minor. Buechner enjoys a vibrant international performance and recording career, and is one of today’s leading keyboard artists. She has studied piano with some of the most formidable keyboard virtuosos of the 20th
century and has performed with major orchestras internationally. As a soloist, her performances have enjoyed national and international radio broadcast and press. Buechner has adjudicated international competitions and has presented lectures and master classes worldwide, notably at the
Juilliard School in New York and the Royal Academy in London. Buechner is currently in the music/piano faculty at UBC. Also on the program will be Ruins of Athens Overture by Beethoven and Symphony No. 6 by Schubert. Tickets are $18 for adults, $15

Motorcycle Show returns to Tradex Annual event in Abbotsford features exhibits, demos and more The 2015 Motorcycle Show returns to Tradex in Abbotsford from Jan. 23 to 25. The show features the motorcycling industry’s loudest engines, coolest exhibitions and latest trends, along with death-defying riders to watch and contests to enter. Among the highlights is the Project LiveWire Experience Tour, an exhibition of the very first HarleyDavidson with an electric engine. The exhibit offers Harley fans a chance to test ride this oneof-a-kind bike as well as an opportunity to check out the Jumpstart Demo riding simulator. Back by popular demand is She Rides Night, celebrating women who ride and those who want to take up the sport, on Friday, Jan. 23 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Admission for all female attendees is half price, and women 18 years and older are encouraged to enter the ladies-only draw, where the winner takes home a new 2015 Kawasaki EX300. In attendance that night will be Valerie Thompson – America’s Queen of Speed and fivetime motorcycle land speed record holder. For young visitors, the show includes the Yamaha Riding Academy for Kids, a fun and interactive course designed for children ages six to 12 who will learn how to ride a Yamaha TTR or PW in a safe and monitored off-road environment with the assistance of trained professionals. Team Empire also returns to this year’s show, featuring Nick “Apex� Brocha and Ernie “Edub� Vigil, professional motorcycle freestyle stunt riders. On four wheels, Bill Hitchon will do equally daring ATV stunts all weekend, and the Canadian Pacific Trials Association will perform, featuring riders who maneuver through a specially designed obstacle course, all without touching their feet to the ground. enter the grand prize draw for a 2015 Triumph Bonneville Newchurch commemorative special edition motorcycle, of which fewer than 30 will be made available in Canada. The show also features exhibits from

The Abbotsford Pilots had another weekend split, dropping a 5-3 decision to the North Vancouver Wolf Pack Friday and edging the Ridge Meadows Flames 4-3 in overtime Saturday. The North Van game was full of action, with the Pilots seemingly energized to host the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s top team – the Wolf Pack have 60 points compared to the Pilots’ 38. However, Abbotsford seemed to be lacking motivation for most of Saturday’s game at MSA Arena – the Flames are last in the Harold Brittain Conference. “For the most part, Saturday was a terrible game for us,” said Abbotsford head coach Jim Cowden. “We kind of played down to their level, with no energy compared to Friday.” Devan Vander Wyk opened the scoring just 20 seconds into the game on a sloppy play, recording his seventh of the season. Just 31 seconds into the second period, Dale Howell scored on a rebound to knot the game. The Flames took the lead at 2:02 when Joel Balzer bobbled a chip in and Jonathin Weloy moved past him and whistled a shot past Pilots’ goalie Alexander Kong’s glove. But, just 36 seconds later, Alex Methorst tied the game at 2-2 when he cut to the net and backhanded a shot short side for his fourth of the campaign. However, with less

Withers got a good piece of Toledo`s wristshot from the top of the circle, but it still floated to the back of the net for Toledo’s fourth of the season. The Wolf Pack regained the lead before the end of the period, when Brodyn Nielsen took a pass on the fly and beat Crawford with a backhand deke. Abby didn’t quit though, tying the game at 8:04 of the third, What began as a dump-in around the net turned into a goal, with the Pilots captain Lawlor getting the final touch. This was North Van’s game to lose though, and they scored twice in 87 seconds to clinch the win. First Mitchell Crisanti scored on an odd man rush and then he scored a power play goal at 16:42, potting a ricochet off the end boards for his second. With less than a month remaining in the regular season, the third-place Pilots will try to regroup. On Thursday, they visit the Langley Knights, before returning home Friday to host the last-place Port Moody Panthers,. “We’ve got lots to work on,” said Cowden. “Look at our discipline, like last night, look at our intensity, we have to work on our systems, but we’ll be prepared. We’ve got a pretty good group.”

Fairfax wins Snowball Classic
South Burnaby’s Tyus Batiste takes the ball to the hoop against Fairfax on Saturday night. The squad from L.A. prevailed, winning the game 80-61 victory and earning their third Snowball Classic title.
Los Angeles basketball powerhouse Fairfax High School defeated Burnaby South 80-61 on Saturday night to win the 55th annual Snowball Classic Basketball Championship. The L.A. team was ranked No. 1 in California and No. 5 in the U.S. heading into the tourney hosted at Abbotsford Senior Secondary. In the final, Fairfax’s Donald Gipson scored 20 points and was named tourney MVP. The Fairfax Lions have played in the Snowball Classic twice before, winning it both times

Daughter of Jake and Nettie Enns, second youngest of 19 children. HALOVICH, James (Jim) Arthur We regret to announce the sudden passing of James (Jim) Halovich on January 13th, 2015 at the age of 73. He was born on January 3, 1942 in Langley, BC. Jim was predeceased by his stepfather Bill Hamon and his mother Nettie Hamon, as well as his brothers Doug Halovich, Harold Hamon, Bill Hamon and Terry Hamon, sister Betty Morgan, and nephews Terry Lee and Darcy Mazeppa. Jim is survived by his three sons Carey (Cathy) Halovich, Tracy (Teresa) Halovich and Kim (Chris) Halovich, brothers Jack Halovich, Ron (Marilyn) Hamon, Godfrey (Kathy) Hamon, sisters Lorraine (Terry) Oliver, Irene (Karl) Mazeppa, Novella (Dale) Allbee, Carole Schaffer, Loretta (Ron) Young, four grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and numerous nieces & nephews. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 2 p.m. at the Bradner Hall, 5305 Bradner Road in Abbotsford. Pearl
George Lawrence Larry passed away on January 15, 2015 at 2:30 am with his family at his side. He was born near Linwood, Ontario on March 9, 1924. Larry served in the infantry in the Second World War, and then moved to the Vancouver area in 1946. He moved to the Edmonton area in 1954 where he worked in the auto and machinery industries until he became an Auctioneer. He and his family moved back to Abbotsford, BC in 1970 where he continued in auto, general merchandise and antique auction sales until his retirement. Larry was predeceased by his parents, Edwin and Alberta (Haid) Brenner, his brothers Roy, Jerome, Edwin, Marcel, Raymond, Leonard (Pat), Frederick, Earl; sisters Mary and Yvonne and grandson Paul Brenner. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Bonnie; 7 sons; James (Pamela), Edward (Lorri), Jerome, Stephen (Marie), Justin, Daniel (Suri) and Jonathan (Sonja) and one daughter Mary Anne. Larry is also survived by 20 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Prayers and Mass of Christian Burial for Larry Brenner were held at St. Ann’s Roman Catholic Church, Abbotsford and Interment at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Chilliwack. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada.

We are saddened to announce the passing of Denise Byle (nee Desrosiers) on January 11, 2015 at the age of 63 after a year-long battle with cancer. Denise, the oldest of four children was predeceased by her parents, Bruce and Helen Desrosiers. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Jim and her four children, Tania (Ken), Tracy (Ryan), Lyndsay and Jason along with her brother, Bruce and her sisters, Darlene and Terese. She will also be greatly missed by her six grandchildren, Brayden (11), Marlee (10), Keegan (8), Sienna (7), Ashlyn (6) and Brixson (1). Denise worked at the Abbotsford School District as the Executive Assistant to the Secretary Treasurer since 2007. Prior to that she worked for many years in the Mission School District in a variety of positions. WAGNER Norma Norma Josephine Wagner, late of Abbotsford, BC, passed away at the age of 95 on Saturday morning, January 10, 2015. Conrad, her loving husband of 53 years predeceased her in February, 2011. She will be missed and fondly remembered by Ruth Illsley, Jeanette (Keith) and Claire Phillips, Terri Schulz, Ruth Mackay, Gwen Mackay; and many other relatives and friends. After retirement in 1994, Norma and Con relocated from West Vancouver to begin a new chapter in their lives. They remained as active and involved in the community and United Church as health allowed. At Norma’s center, were home and a strong focus on and belief in the importance of family and friends. After Con’s passing, she continued to find comfort, strength and joy from all friends and family members. The presence of children always energized her and those visits left her smiling. Music of any kind soothed her soul. A Memorial Tea and Graveside Service will be held in early March; time and place to be determined and announced at a later date. A determined, vibrant and courageous woman is safely at home in heaven where her soul belongs. Joyce was born on February 3, 1929 in Edmonton, Alberta. She was the oldest of eight children. She is predeceased by her first husband, Adrian Kool, and by her second husband Jim Beukens in 2009. Joyce grew up in Edmonton, Alberta, and moved to Vancouver in 1947. Her children were born in Richmond and Vancouver. Joyce and her growing family (Adrian and her six children) moved to the Abbotsford area in 1970. Joyce faced many disappointments and challenges in her life but her trust in God and her vibrant, determined personality carried her through these ‘valleys’ with dignity and courage. By God’s grace she met and married Jim Beukens, her soul mate. Together they lived their dream of dairy farming on beautiful Sumas Prairie, along the Sumas River at the foot of Sumas Mountain. Jim passed away in 2009 and Joyce continued living on their farm until her illness this past December. Joyce lived a full and eventful life. She had many friends of all ages from the different activities she was involved in. She loved nature, animals, gardening, fashion and oil painting. She also loved a variety of great music. You could often hear her whistling in her house or in her garden. She was larger than life and will be deeply missed by all. The family would like to thank the staff at ARHCC for their kindness and care during her illness these past two weeks, especially the care she received on the palliative care floor. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2015, at 1:00 pm at Living Hope Christian Reformed Church, 34631 Old Clayburn Road, Abbotsford, B.C. Please no flowers. Mom passed away peacefully last week at Abbotsford Regional Hospital at the age of 88 under the comforting and compassionate care of the staff on “Cheam 3”. She was born near a quaint little Ontario town called Fenelon Falls. She was one of five sisters and grew up in an idyllic rural setting. After a wonderful childhood, she taught grades 1-6 in a one room rural school before attending Central Baptist Seminary in Toronto where she met and married Rev. Donald C. Merrett. Children Ruth McMonagle (Trevor) and John (Cathy) came along in due course and the Don and Dorothy Merrett family adventure that spanned residency from Quebec to British Columbia, began. After 64 years of a happy and loving marriage together, Dad went to be with the Lord last year. Mom was totally devoted and committed to her family and it was only through her “keeping the home fires burning” that Dad’s extensive Christian service with its frequent travel was possible. She was a strong and
She managed the family’s modest financial resources with great care and effectiveness. She was a collector, she loved travel and she loved and stayed close to her four sisters and their families. She loved singing and was involved in many choirs over the years. She was particularly close to her six grandchildren and their spouses, Natalie (Sean), Graham (Roberta), John Jr. (Heather), Carlee (Brent), Kristin (Blaine), Liam and more recently, her 11 adoring great-grandchildren. God Blessed our families’ lives through very close relationships amongst Mom and her kids, grandkids and great-grandkids. She is now reunited with Dad and with her Lord and Savior and will be deeply missed. A memorial service in Mom’s honour will be held Saturday, January 24th at 1:00 p.m. at the Immanuel Baptist Church in Abbotsford.
