B.C. labour and training outlook released Cariboo worker demands expected to grow over next few years
AUTUMN MacDONALD Observer Reporter With the release of the provincial 2022 Labour Market Outlook document, CNC says it’s well positioned to respond to labour and training demands. “We’re responding to the learning needs of students,” CNC president Henry Reiser said. The document, presented by the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Training provides labour market demands and supply trends to 2022. Data is based on the B.C.
Labour Market Scenario Model, developed in 2009. “The model incorporated demographic changes, industry growth, major projects and other relevant information,” the document states. For 2012 – 2022 the number of total job openings is expected to hit one million. Openings due to confirmed or planned economic activities sits at 985,100, 68 per cent is expected from retirements, while 32 per cent is expected from economic growth. Up to 100,000 is expected from additional LNG job openings and 78 per cent will require

post-secondary training. New entrant supply needs are forecasted at 425,320; net in-migration is expected at 300,820, while other mobility is sitting at 216,750. “Overall labour demand is expected to grow faster than labour supply in B.C.,” the document states. “As a result, tight labour market conditions, where the demand
for workers surpasses the supply of workers, are expected in the later part of the outlook period, starting in 2019.” The Cariboo is expected to have 30,300 job openings over the forecast period. Eighty-seven percent of those openings are due to retirements, 13 per cent are expected from expansion. Demand for Cariboo workers is projected to grow by 0.4 per cent each year on average. The five top expected expansion in the Cariboo region are: • Masonry and plastering; • Other construction trades;
• Carpenters and cabinetmakers; • Crane operators and drillers and blasters; and • Contractors and supervisors, industrial, electrical and construction trades and related workers. Reiser pointed to CNC’s development of trades training and the push for future expansion. “Quesnel acts as a catchment for trades training,” he said, highlighting the desire to have students remain in their hometowns. Performing arts festival, best of the season QFPA showcases homegrown talent
ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter “Art is the signature of civilization.” Beverly Sills, operatic soprano What began as the Quesnel Music Festival in 1983, with the inspiration and organization of piano teachers Anne Garry and Sue Doughty, has grown to now include dance, vocal and choral and speech arts in the 2015 Quesnel Festival of the Performing Arts (QFPA.) In 1987 an independent dance festival was formed, administered by the Quesnel Dance Society included jazz and tap, as well as school and community dance classes and in 1991 the Music Festival included band and instrumental and vocal and choral as well as the original piano component. In 1992, speech and dramatic arts were added. In 2001, the music and dance festivals merged to form the QFPA as we know it today. Over the past 32 years of annual festivals, many thousands of aspiring young performers have enjoyed their time in the spotlight. Thanks to the vision and dedication of QFPA’s many volunteer organizers over the years, the community continues to have an event that celebrates and encourages the performing arts at its most grass roots level – among our children and youth. QFPA is extremely happy and proud that the community is willing and able to continue to personally support this worthwhile cause. QFPA is a not-for-profit society, run by a group of volunteers who are devoted to sparking and encouraging a life-long passion for the performing arts. Festival provides an ideal opportunity not only for our aspiring performers, but also for anyone who is a performing arts fan, to take in some truly amazing talent right here in Quesnel. First up is the Vocal and Choral Festival, Feb. 26 – 27 at Lakeview Church with Sarona Mynhardt adjudicating. Mynhardt was born and raised in South Africa, and completed her teaching degree in Pretoria where she specialized in classroom music, voice, choral conducting, drama and special education. Her formal voice training culminated in postgraduate work at the Conservatory of Music at North-West University in Potchefstroom. After 10 years of teaching music and conducting choirs at elementary and secondary school levels, as well as directing musicals and plays, Mynhardt immigrated with her family to Canada in 1997 and founded the White Rock Children’s Choir, which currently has choirs at three levels under her artistic direction. Along with her teaching, she sat on the board for B.C. Choral Federation for five years and
has been a guest conductor for several choirs. She also regularly serves as adjudicator at music festivals and clinician for conductor and choral workshops. Following the Vocal and Choral Festival is the Dance Festival Feb. 27 – March 1 at Chuck Mobley Theatre with Laurie Cahoon-Alston adjudicating ballet and Geneen Georgiev as the stage adjudicator. Cahoon-Alston is originally from Edmonton, with a career which has taken her around the world as a performer, adjudicator, award-winning choreographer, convention teacher and instructor. She has trained in tap, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, modern, hip hop, acrobatics, ballet and musical theatre. One of her greatest honours was an invitation to audition for Cirque du Soleil. Cahoon-Alston currently teaches at the Edmonton School of Ballet and also includes acrobatic teaching to her students.
Stage adjudicator Georgiev is a classically trained dance teacher who has expanded her knowledge in a variety of dance mediums. She instructed throughout British Columbia for many years before she extended her dance training worldwide. Being immersed in the dance society her whole life, Georgiev has performed in many venues all over the Lower Mainland and overseas. She is currently a working dancer herself and she encourages all her students to follow by example as she keeps her style and knowledge up to date within the dance industry. Speech Arts follows April 17 – 18 at Ecole Baker elementary school with adjudicator Christina Rogers. She holds an ARCT in speech arts from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto. She has also completed exams with Trinity College in London, England and has spent several years teaching at the Speech Arts Studio in Edmonton, Alberta. Rogers is a published author and poet and also enjoys musical theatre, voice and being a mom to her three children. Piano finishes off QFPA’s 2015 season with performances April 22 – 26 also at Lakeview Church. Yvette Rowledge is the adjudicator and brings extensive experience to her work with students and youth. She is a member of the Canadian Music Festival Adjudicators’ Association and the BC Registered Music Teachers’ Association. She has taught for more than 35 years and a former faculty member of the Langley Community Music School, the Victoria Conservatory and the Douglas College Community Music School. Her education includes prestigious schools both in Canada and England and has been tutors by some of the best. Rowledge has examined senior levels of piano and enjoys both leading and participating in master classes. QFPA’s goal continues to be to provide a forum for students of the performing arts to perform in public before an experienced, skilled adjudicator, in order to receive training and opportunities above and beyond what they receive in their regular studies. “Every spring, over the four to six week period of Festival, participants, aged five and up receive the opportunity to gain greater knowledge and appreciation for the performing arts,” QFPA president Romi Traber said. “Each discipline presents trophies, cash awards, scholarships and medals to outstanding participants, with the possibly of being chosen by their adjudicators to attend the annual Provincial Festival. “The 2014 Festival was attended by more than 800 participants, along with their families, friends, teachers and fellow community members turning out to applaud Quesnel and area’s homegrown talent.”

OPINIONS
On the mind Terrorism is on the minds of many people these days, given last week’s events in France. Canada is not immune from the challenges posed by terrorists, with ISIS specifically naming Canada as a target last week. The organization, which holds parts of Iraq and Syria and continues to engage in brutal attacks on innocent people, is under attack by Canada and many other allied nations. It has been threatening Canada for months, with at least one Canadian, John Maguire, appearing in ISIS videos and calling for attacks on his countrymen. Many Canadians felt immune from terrorism until the attacks on Canadian Forces members in Ottawa and Quebec last fall. While the people involved in both of those cases apparently acted on their own, and at least one was suffering from mental illness, the attacks shook many Canadians. An attack on a soldier standing guard at the National War Memorial, and the lone shooter then getting into the Parliament Buildings, was a brazen and chilling moment. The federal government is ready and willing to boost surveillance of potential “radicalized” individuals, and its moves in this area will be supported by a large majority of citizens. They want to get back to the “peace and order” that usually characterizes Canada. Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee that. The world is a much smaller place, with air travel to almost any place easily available, and social media used extensively to shape and change peoples’ attitudes. Some people suggest that all terrorists are Muslims and feel that the root of the problem is that particular religion. This is a very narrow-minded and wrong-headed approach to take, as the story of Mohamed Chelali shows. In 2002, the teacher (of Muslim background) was in Paris, and helped to disarm a neoNazi who was planning to assassinate French presiident Jacques Chirac at the annual Bastille Day parade. The fact is that there are people of many different ethnic and religious backgrounds who feel they need to take their grievances and explode them on the world stage. Any way that they can be identified early and stopped is useful. – Black Press

Out of the mouths of dogs
s I type this week’s column I have four precious pups sleeping at my feet. Two are my 30-pound Cockapoos, Lola and Charlie, and the other two are my friend’s dogs who each weigh at least twice that. One of them is a Labradoodle named Sierra that I dog-sit often, the fourth is a Portuguese Water Dog who has been staying with us for the last two weeks while her family is on vacation. Kahli is her name and she is, as my Papa would have called her, a furry little rascal. To be fair, the other three fit that description as well, but this one’s mischievous in a different way than I’m accustomed to. I can’t say I wasn’t warned though. “Give her these,” my friend Kari had said, handing me a bag of assorted items before leaving on her trip. “She always has to have something hanging out of her mouth.” Kari was right about that. But her pooch’s oral fixation extended well beyond the bag of dog toys and goodies
Lori Welbourne
On A Brighter Note she supplied me with. In fact, Kahli grew tired of what was in that bag right away and searched high and low in her new surroundings for more interesting things to sniff, mangle and relocate to our back yard. Out there I discovered the chewed-up comb, toothbrush, bottle caps, Tupperware lids, Christmas ornaments, markers, underpants and socks that she’d taken from the house. Thankfully I didn’t find any empty jars of peanut butter, boxes of cereal or bags of potato chips like those I’ve found from my dogs in years past. I certainly didn’t want her getting sick or blowing her healthy diet, but controlling what she ate wasn’t always easy. Near the end of her
stay with us she found a Barbie doll on the patio and brought it in the house. I didn’t discover her newfound plaything right away. By the time I came into the kitchen and heard the familiar clacking sound of Kahli’s teeth breaking something apart it was way too late to save it. Out of her mouth dangled “Cheerleader Barbie” and over 30 of her chewed up body parts were strewn down the hallway like a plastic crumb trail. Fortunately Kahli seemed far more interested in dismantling the figurine than ingesting it, but I worried she might swallow one of the small pieces so I immediately tried to get it away from her. Of course this was exactly what she was hoping for: a high-speed chase. Like so many times in the past two weeks I ran around the house chasing after her, calling for her to stop. And like so many times she would pause briefly to look back at me, gleefully wagging her tail before running some more and eventually escaping out the doggy door that was almost
too small for her to squeeze through. On this particular occasion I managed to get outside fast enough to see her hide her toy - previously known as my daughter’s toy - in the snow. I went to the spot she’d dropped it, plunged my hand into the fluffy white stuff and rescued Barbie’s legs. I then went about collecting the rest of her remains. With the exception of one arm, which is still missing in action, I found everything including the blonde smiling head back in the house. Kahli only had two days left with us at that point, but I wasn’t taking any chances and got her some high quality dental chew bones. They didn’t provoke any chases from us, but they still seemed to keep her happily busy. Once the snow melts I expect we’ll uncover some more mutilated treasures to remind us of our adventures with Kahli the klepto. Until next time, she and her antics will be missed around here. Looking back on sled dog trails and tales T
here is definitely a history associated with the use of sled dogs in the Quesnel area. Here is an account of an unbelievable trip from Quesnel to Fort George in 1874. By 1868, an overland trail had been developed north of Quesnel, essentially following the route of the Collins Overland Telegraph. There also were side roads [trails] built to Fort George as well as northwards to Fort St. James and beyond to the Omineca goldfields. The route north from Quesnel, was the only practical transportation route in the winter months and was travelled by horses and sleighs, dog teams and on foot with the use of snowshoes. At the same time that the telegraph line was being constructed, there was also a great deal of exploration and surveying taking place to determine the best route for the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway which became a reality in 1914. Mr. C.F. Hanington was just one of several men engaged in this exploration and surveying. He found himself in Quesnel as winter was setting in and the description of his journey to Fort George by dog team is one of
Letters to the Editor
the very few documented accounts of this arduous winter journey. The quotes in this article are from his journal. Dec. 8 1874, Hanington’s party set off from Quesnel about 12 noon with teams pretty well loaded with grub and other supplies. The whole town turned out and bid us ‘God speed’ – we heard many prophecies in regard to our going to destruction. We found the trail for a short distance very good, it having been kept broken by some ranch men who live a short distance above, but it was hilly and side hill at that, so that with upsets, broken sled and other disasters being the results, we found ourselves at dark only three miles from Quesnel. We struck for the last house and got to Pollock’s at 6 p.m., rather used up and having left one load behind. Pollock was kind and gave us a supper and a place for the dogs who also were played out”. It is possible to picture the crowd outside of the Occidental Hotel on Quesnel’s Front Street as the teams made their way across the frozen Fraser River and striking out on the route north, the geography hasn’t changed much since that time. The hills and side hills are still there, but to learn that in six hours, while
travelling over what was possibly the best part of the trail that the team had only travelled three miles doesn’t bode too well for the journey. It is difficult to know just what this outfit looked like. No-doubt the dogs were harnessed with padded collar harness, running in tandem. The sleds were most likely jerry-rigged Yukon freight sleds although there is also reason to believe that dog team toboggans may have been used. In any event they were grossly overloaded. The earlier description of the teams as being comprised of “13 dogs of differing denominations” doesn’t sound too promising but is a reflection of the fact that good sled dogs simply weren’t plentiful in this area. The next day we mended broken sleds, broke a track a few miles out [on snowshoes]… went back and brought up the cached sled. On the 10th we made a fresh start, left some of our stores at Pollock’s, as the sleds were altogether too heavy. [The trail] was built by some telegraph company [I forget which] who proposed to run a telegraph line up north to Behring’s Straits and thence to Asia by a short cable. This line was actually in working order for some 200 miles,
when the news of the success of the Atlantic cable put a stop to the operations – the company left everything as it then was. The wire now hangs broken and twisted from the posts, the greater part of the offices [cabins] are burned down and the only result of such a vast expenditure of money is the trail we take on our way to Fort George. After a hard day we made camp only seven miles from Pollock’s or 10 miles from Quesnel. On the 13 we were 45 miles from Quesnel, having had some fearfully bad trail over side hill and deep snow. Of course side hills are good enough for mule trains but when you try dogs you will find they won’t work worth a cent. The dogs go straight enough but the sled won’t keep after them, being more inclined to seek the valley below. So as you can imagine it requires a good deal of work and patience to keep the sled in the road while the dogs haul. Running dogs on a side hill, especially without any kind of groomed trail is as difficult today as it was over 100 years ago. We had a very heavy fall of snow, but were able to make 12 miles that day. I gave my train to Johnny and went ahead with Jarvis, who in addition to the work of
breaking track had been very busy all the time counting his steps, so as to get the correct distance. When you walk all day and think of nothing but one, two, three, etc. It is monotonous enough for anything. We had a hard bit of work at the Blackwater River, 50 miles from Quesnel. The river is bridged by poles and telegraph wire, but on this side it is bare ground and the hill is very steep indeed. The poor dogs did their best to get up, but the end of the matter was that we hauled the loads and they looked on. I went back to my own train, and with three men hauling, we got it up at last, but I am afraid my whip did more
than its share of duty that day. We now had about two feet of snow, which was very soft and clung to our snowshoes in great masses; it was also very hard on the dogs, this wading through snow, only freshly beaten down by two pair of snowshoes. Those who travel out to where this trail crosses the Blackwater river will see exactly the same terrain today. With the construction of a second telegraph line known as the Yukon Telegraph in the late 1890’s, this spot became a location on the map called Blackwater and is well described in Guy Lawrence’s book 40 Years on the Yukon Telegraph. NEWS
Travels from A7 The Indian had a small dog, on which he had his kettle, blanket and grub, he himself carrying the axe and some fuel. Happy thought for us, why not make these beasts of ours do some of our work. We loaded them and started, Jarvis ahead, counting one, two, three, I next calling along the packed dogs and Johnny behind, poking up the lagging ones with a stick. Alec drove the sled behind. It was a comic sight. But soon [the dogs] got used to it and were able to follow us, and we went at a good pace, being on a hard track and in a hurry. Distance by our pacing, 125 miles from Quesnel. By the river it would have been 83 miles. We spent 12 days on the way, one of which was at Pollock’s. On the way we had used up one sled
completely, and the other is fit for nothing now. We made three caches, containing in all about two-thirds of our original loads. On the whole it is the worst place I ever saw to do this kind of travelling and I shall never try it again. Hanington and his party regrouped in Fort George as this was just the first
step of their journey which would take them to Edmonton and eventually to Winnipeg. They scrounged Fort George for more dogs and equipment as well as dog food, eventually getting all three from Fort St. James. Jeff Dinsdale is the organizer of the Sled Dog Mail Run.

Piper in Crisis wins bronze book award ANNIE GALLANT Observer Reporter Local author Beverly Fox was honoured recently with a Bronze Illumination award for her book Piper in Crisis, the second in her trilogy. Following the success of the first book Piper’s Call, Fox was pleased with the reception of the second book and submitted Piper in Crisis for the Illumination Book Awards in the inspirational/romance fiction category for additional feedback. The Illumination awards are designed to honour the year’s best new titles written and published with a Christian world view, that bring inspiration and answers to readers exploring their faith. “Winning a bronze award was pretty exciting,” Fox said. She has started her third and final book in the trilogy but admits she not good at deadlines. “When I write I shut myself in and lose track of time to the point my poor husband has to put up with minimal meals more often than not,” she added. “This past year has been crazy – when it takes all day to plough your driveway and stack firewood on the porch, writing often ends up at the bottom of your to-do list.”

Jayne Dean wants your vote
Obituary Tribute
Ilene Valois (nee Willey) June 4, 1960 - December 23, 2014
Local girl looking to win Pin-Up Contest
Shutterjunkie photo
in the transfer, by car, of a carload for kittens and cats from Quesnel to Vancouver for a local animal rescue.
Working in the trades isn’t exactly glamorous so she loves getting dolled up after hours. It would be an honour
for Jayne Dean to have the chance to be up on stage competing against professional Pin Up models and with everyone’s support we can get her there. Here are some tips on voting: 1. Click on the image to get a better view of the picture. 2. Click on the name to read a short bio. 3. When you vote you will be sent a verification e-mail. Your vote will not be counted until you confirm your vote with this e-mail. You may need to refresh your page as well to see the vote register. 4. If someone types in a mistake on their e-mail address, they will not receive the e-mail confirmation so the vote will not get counted. They will not be able to vote from that computer again as the IP address will then be blocked. Double
Hands up if you’re ready for more reliable high-speed Internet.

Laura Jayne Ketchum aka Jayne Dean, born and raised in Quesnel, is thrilled to be in the running for Miss Viva Las Vegas Pin-up Model! The Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender is the largest most notorious Rockabilly festival in the world. Held at The Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas, it annually attracts 20,000 attendees for four days of nonstop music, hot rods and partying. They put on North America’s biggest pre-1960s era car show with hundreds of hot rods and just as many vendors selling vintage goods. Every year they host a Pin Up Contest for the title of Miss Viva Las Vegas. The top six, determined by online votes, will go on to compete in the Pin Up Contest in Vegas. To make it happen, Jayne Dean needs your votes. You can head over to www.vivalasvegas. net/pin-up-contest and vote for Jayne Dean. Growing up a gearhead’s daughter, Jayne Dean spent countless weekends with family at car shows and old time drag races. She always admired the pin up girls in her dad’s car magazines and always dreamed of ending up in one someday. Jayne Dean travelled as a lone wolf to a town on Vancouver Island where she didn’t know a soul to be in her first pin up contest and was hooked. She has since moved to Victoria and keeps busy working doing renovations, modelling and volunteering. Volunteerism is one of the contest criteria and Jayne Dean has many volunteer hours to her credit. While living in Quesnel she volunteered at the SPCA and is now going to begin the lengthy process of application for dog walker at Victoria’s SPCA. Jayne Dean also helped to paint the west side arena as well as helping

Another game down and one step closer to the end of the regular season, the ’Roos bring in another victory against the Tomahawks. The Lac La Hache Tomahawks skated in to Quesnel over the weekend, facing off against the ’Roos Saturday, Jan. 10. Quesnel’s home team started the night off strong, quickly taking a five goal lead within the first 10 minutes of the game. Only 21 seconds after hitting the ice the puck shot by the visiting team’s goalie and into the net as ’Roo Paul Giordat, assisted by Ryan Skinner and Tyrell Turgeon, scored the first goal of the night. This would be the first of many goals to come for the Kangaroos, with the Tomahawks unable to surpass or even match their opponents. Skating across the ice with the puck and dodging strikes from the oncoming Tomahawks for his second goal in a row was Girodat, this time assisted by Mitch Galbraith. Continuing the ’Roos scoring streak was trio Coltin De Frais, Alessio Tomassetti and Justin Fulton. De Frais skated in for the goal, assisted by his ever helpful companions. Fourth goal of the night and fourth goal for the ’Roos was scored by Ryan Skinner, with Fulton assisting. The ’Roos fifth and final goal for the first period went to Quesnel’s trusty high scoring trio, this time with Fulton and De Frais assisting Alessio Tomassetti. With the ’Roos strong lead the Tomahawks had their work cut out for them and by the end of the first period the visiting team had only managed to score two goals, still leaving the ’Roos with a substantial three goal lead. Though the Tomahawks started the second period on a strong note, scoring a goal only two minutes and 31 second in,
this small triumph was short lived with the ’Roos quickly taking charge of the match once more and maintaining the home teams three point lead. The Kangaroo trio became the dynamic duo for the ’Roos first goal of the second period, with Alessio Tomassetti skating in for a goal assisted only by De Frais. Matt Powell and Kyle Schisler assisted Fulton, gliding along the ice with the puck to score another goal for the ’Roos. Though the Tomahawks were falling further behind, the visiting team was not through fighting just yet and managed to sneak the puck by ’Roo goalie Ryan Manderson for the fourth time that night. With only seconds left in the second period Schisler skated in unassisted, bringing in yet another goal before the buzzer called the players off the ice. In the third and final period and already four goals ahead, the Kangaroos were still not backing down. Galbraith has reason to celebrate as he scored back-toback goals, with his first goal assisted by Turgeon and Girodat while his second goal was score with the help of Cam Kilbreath and Girodat. It was in this final period of the night that the ’Roo trio jumped into action once more, scoring their third goal and the ’Roos 11th goal of the night. The goal went to Alessio Tomassetti, assisted by De Frais and Fulton. The last goal of the match went to ’Roo Nick Tomassetti, with Skinner assisting. As the final buzzer sounded the ’Roos were eight goals ahead of the Tomahawks for a final score of 12-4. The ’Roos currently hold seven wins, six losses and one overtime loss with only two games remaining in the regular season before the playoffs. Next up for the Quesnel boys are back-to-back away games, first taking on the Terrace River Kings Jan. 17 followed by a match against the Smithers Steelheads on Jan. 18.

Fearless fighter Olin Lee Olin Lee, from the Two Rivers Boxing Club, is leaving for Quebec City on Jan. 18 as part of the seven-member B.C. Junior/Youth Boxing Team. Fourteen-year-old Lee will face boxers from across the country as he makes his debut in the big leagues of National competition. Provincial Team Coach Bob Pegues

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 Spend the week in as much quiet contemplation as you can manage, Capricorn. You have a few big questions to work out and can only think when you have private time. AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Aquarius, dissatisfaction at work has you wondering if things would be different elsewhere. Sometimes a change of attitude can give you an entirely new perspective. PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, a loved one comes to you seeking guidance this week, but don’t be bummed if they ultimately do not heed your advice. was big enough for a bowl of water. Please note, Mr Chevy. Having the navigation system was great as getting to our destination was a little tricky, and finding our way in the dark could have been a minor trial. Our friendly ‘nav-lady’ delivered us easily. I especially liked getting plenty of warning about upcoming turns. Some navigation systems instruct you to turn at the very last moment, which is not helpful. Often our ‘nav-lady’ gave us two warnings sometimes even three ‘turn left in 250 metres’, ‘turn left in 100 metres’. Believe me it was comforting. All the places we wanted to visit parks, malls, trails and shops were easily found with no hassles. In Tacoma, a third dog joined us for adventures around town – Beau, a large
yellow lab. Everyone knows labs are eternal puppies who enjoy good times no matter where they land. This happy boy landed in the cargo area with the other two and still there was plenty of room for all three dogs with nary a complaint about someone’s paw being on someone’s side. It all made for a fun Christmas celebration with lots of treats, even for my backup navigator Patricia and myself. Next year, the ‘kids’ are holding out for a Cadillac! 2015 Chevrolet Traverse AWD LT Power: 2.6-litre V6, 281 horsepower, six-speed auto transmission. Base price: $43,460 (as tested, $53,285)
Question of the Week Today, writer Morva Gowans amuses and informs with a story of driving with dogs on a long trip. Send your fun or informative story about taking pets on a long (road) run to our editor, Keith Morgan… Send your stories to keith.morgan@drivewaybc.com
Safety Tip: Black ice can form unexpectedly on the road in the winter and may not be visible. If you drive over black ice and start to skid, ease off the accelerator – don’t brake – and look and steer smoothly in the direction you want to go. You may need to repeat this maneuver.

well worth the investment of $60. You should also consider a steering stabilizer to control those large tires bouncing down the road. There are a few options available from a single application or a double stabilizer setup, depending on the vehicle. Price $89 to $165. Another good upgrade to consider with a lift of this size is a traction bar system to prevent wheel hop or axle wind up. In the old days, these bars would limit your wheel travel, but now the ends are equipped with reverse hourglass-shaped urethane bushings that allow the traction bar to flex for articulation. The final upgrade to consider is the addition of stainless steel brake lines. Such brake lines not only give you the correct length required with these massive lifts, but also will not swell under increased braking pressure demanded by larger tires. Your new truck looks great in front of your home, but why does the front sit lower than the back? If you find yourself pondering this question, you are not alone. This “feature” is very common with the trucks of You can raise your today, but there is a solution truck a few inches to this problem. or all the way up to Revtek Industries was founded in 2000 to market nosebleed levels. unique Toyota suspension lift systems, but since those early Ian Harwood days, the company has gone on to develop systems for the Ford Super-duty truck, the Ford F150’s, Ram, Jeep, Nissan Titan and the Toyota Tundra. Suspension upgrades and improvements are becoming tougher and tougher to manufacture. The days when you could throw away your stock leaf-springs and stick in the largest leaf-spring you could find are over. Now you have to worry more about steering geometry and wheel-alignment specs. Revtek offers a complete line of suspension systems designed to level your vehicle, and offer you the option to increase tire size. Most levelling systems maintain the original springs, so you can maintain a smooth ride. In my view, Revtek has the most installer-friendly kits available and the manufacturer utilizes the best materials – billet aircraft aluminum (higher grade of aluminum with no imperfections), powder coated cast aluminum, and specialty polyurethane, which meet or exceed original-equipment specifications. Whether you choose a complete lift, or just to level the front end, Revtek likely has a solution for many of today’s most popular vehicles. Check out www.revtek.com. If you are not happy with the overall ride height and not satisfied with just levelling the front-end then Pro Comp Suspension may be an alternative. It has a full line of suspension lifts: you can raise your truck a few inches or all the way up to nosebleed levels. One kit in particular is the 8.5-inch for Ford Super Duty trucks. This lift has enough clearance to clear 37-inch tires, and will cost you $2,400 with shocks. With lift kits of this size, you should definitely make sure you make any necessary improvements such as a spacer kit to lower the carrier bearing on vehicles with two piece drive-shafts. This will reduce high-speed driveshaft vibrations, and is
