Kevin Wright his gratitude, there wasn’t one suitable for the occasion. “Thank you for the kidney” cards aren’t available, and McBeth said it’s difficult to express how grateful he is for the gift that Wright is giving him. McBeth, who turns 45 on Jan. 28, will receive a kidney from Wright, 51, during transplant surgery today (Wednesday) at St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver. “There are no words to express the amount of gratitude that I have. You

can’t put a monetary value on it, but really to me it’s almost like someone who’s won the lottery and is turning to me and giving me the ticket,” McBeth said. McBeth, who has been with the APD since 2004 and currently works in the domestic violence unit, was diagnosed in his early teens with a hereditary degenerative condition called polycystic kidney disease (PKD). The condition is characterized by numerous fluid-filled cysts that result in massive enlargement of the kidneys, eventually progressing to kidney failure. McBeth’s grandmother died of the condition in her late 30s, and his dad

A woman previously described by police as a high-risk sex offender has been charged with failing to comply with an order to stay away from places attended by children. Audrey Elizabeth Jean Black, 38, was arrested last month and released on $1,500 bail. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said the arrest was based on a 10-year prohibition order that was issued to Black in another province in 2007. Black was sentenced to four years in prison in Saskatchewan in 2007 after pleading guilty to sexual interference with a person under the age of 14, sexual touching of a person under 14, one count of making child pornography, and one count of bestiality. At the time, her husband Donald William Black was already serving an eight-year sentence for the same crimes, committed against two girls, ages 18 months and four years. He was also convicted of crimes against a third girl, a five-year-old. Black was released from prison in 2011 and initially chose to live in Chilliwack and then Abbotsford, resulting in local police issuing a public notice. Among the conditions in her prohibition order was that she not attend any park, playground, recreation centre or other place where children are expected to be. Police were notified late last year that Black had allegedly attended a church service in Abbotsford where children were present. MacDonald said police spoke with Black and the church in an attempt to have her attend other services. Police were later notified by church security that Black had again allegedly attended a service where children were present, and she was arrested.

Mountain development moves forward Third reading approved on Falcon Ridge

A proposal to build a 555unit townhouse development north of Lower Sumas Mountain Road moved forward at council on Monday, while another multi-family project on Marshall Road was sent back to staff to consider alterations. The two proposals had raised concerns for neighbouring residents at a public hearing on Dec. 15. The planned townhouses on Sumas Mountain are stacked up the mountainside, which had been degraded by previous development attempts. The developer said the project was designed to heal that problem. Coun. Patricia Ross said she was convinced to support the project, as the developer has “done an outstanding job of

A proposal for 370 townhouse units and 30 singlefamily lots at Marshall Road and Canterbury Avenue, which would also lead to the connection of Marshall Road through the development, was sent back to staff. Siemens said he generally

would support development, but expressed concerns about the high density of the project, wondering if the increased number of homes was due to the cost of building the road. Mayor Henry Braun said that while the city needs the Marshall Road connection, he understood from the public hearing that the development would change the neighbourhood, which is mostly single-family homes. He said he struggled with the density and also said it was possible the cost of the road to the developer was driving up the density of the project. Council voted to send the development back to city staff to work with the applicant on the issues of lowering the density and road construction.

Siegfried Bartel celebrates 100 years Born in Poland during First World War Siegfried Bartel of Abbotsford celebrated his 100th birthday at Menno Home on Jan. 6 surrounded by his family and friends. Born in a time when the U.S. House of Representatives was denying women the vote, neon tubes were patented and the first coast-to-coast long distance call was made, Siegfried has lived through the incredible and rapid changes of the 20th and 21st centuries. The First World War had just begun to rage across Europe when Siegfried’s mother prayed for her unborn child. Siegfried grew up in Prussia (now part of Poland) in a Mennonite community and enjoyed a privileged life earned by the hard labour of his farming family. As a young boy, he watched his father extend grace to a man whose drunken negligence caused a train accident that took the lives of his mother and oldest brother.

Siegfried Bartel holds his great-granddaughter with his son Martin Bartel during his 100th birthday celebration. It was natural for a man of German descent to enlist in the German Army, and Siegfried did so in 1937 before the Second World War. When the war erupted in September 1939, he found himself in an army that eventually brought horrors to others and convinced Siegfried that pacifism was the only sane response to killing and

war. During the war, Siegfried married Erna and started a family. Seven boys were born into his family as Siegfried went back to farming to earn a living. In 1951, he received refugee help through Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) to re-establish his life in Canada, becoming a

dairy farmer in Agassiz. Siegfried became an active participant in the community as well as serving in leadership with MCC from 1972 to 1987, grateful for how he had received refugee help in his time of need. Siegfried’s birthday celebration at Menno Home was attended by five of his seven sons, six daughters-in-law, one grandson and one great-granddaughter, as well as the staff of Menno Place. Siegfried’s older brother, Hans, 103, came over from Primrose Gardens Apartments with his wife to celebrate the occasion. Siegfried is the author of two books, “Living with Conviction” and “Journey to Pacifism.” In these books, he shares his life’s story and resulting convictions about pacifism and dedication to others in need. McBeth was diagnosed after being screened for the disease, but maintained his health through the years as a competitive cyclist, sometimes participating in triathlons. He first began noticing signs of PKD about two years ago, when he was becoming increasingly fatigued and finding it more difficult to exercise. His health has been monitored more closely ever since and has reached the point where his kidneys are functioning at only about nine per cent of normal capacity. McBeth was either facing dialysis – a process that removes waste and excess water from the blood and must be performed four or five hours every second day – or a transplant. His family members could not donate a kidney due to their history of PKD. His wife, Anne, was not a match to donate a kidney, nor were some of her family members, so McBeth

began reaching out to friends and co-workers. A letter sent through the police union advised fellow officers of his plight, resulting in several people coming forward – mainly through the APD – to be tested. Wright, who has been with the APD since 1995, turned out to be the best match. He said he agreed to donate his kidney

and the recovery period is anticipated to be six to eight weeks. The two already have ambitious plans following their recovery. They have registered to compete in the Challenge Penticton half triathlon event on Aug. 30 as part of a relay team with two others. McBeth has a 12-year-old son who has also been diagnosed with PKD, and he and Wright want

to raise awareness of kidney disease, the need for a cure and the importance of live donors. Leading up to the event, Wright jokes that there’s one thing McBeth can do to thank him. “If we go for a bike ride, he’s going to have to give me about a couple of miles’ head start just because I gave him my kidney, just to even the playing field a little bit.”

The Fraser Valley and the rest of Southern British Columbia will be considered free of bird flu if no more cases of the virus are found over the next 90 days, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). It has been three weeks since CFIA last detected a new case of the avian influenza. The highly pathogenic H5N2 strain has killed or prompted the destruction of 245,600 birds on a dozen farms in Abbotsford, Langley and Chilliwack. In a statement released on its website, the CFIA said that all the infected premises have now been “depopulated,” and that it is “monitoring the progress of disposal of dead birds, and cleaning and disinfection of barns, vehicles, equipment and tools...” Barring the discovery of the virus on another farm, the CFIA says “disease control measures will remain in place for 21 days after the cleaning and disinfection of all confirmed infected

BC Poultry Association president Ray Nickel said things are also getting back to normal at poultry farms within the onekilometre zone surrounding sites that had completed the composting of infected materials. Those farms that had not been infected by the flu but had been forbidden from restocking their barns, can now bring new birds on site, Nickel said. “The industry feels good about what the current status is,” he said. “We’ve got farms that are in full recovery now.” At least seven of the infected farms had completed the composting process by late last week, with the rest expected to be finished and receive CFIA signoff within the next seven days, Nickel said. “We are feeling a lot better than we did three weeks ago, as far as the containmment side of it,” Nickel said. The CFIA said “strict surveillance” will continue in affected areas over the next three months, after which the area would be considered free of the virus. The CFIA reiterated that “Avian influenza viruses do not pose risks to food safety when poultry and poultry products are properly handled and cooked.” Nickel echoed those statements, and said consumers seem to have received that message during the Christmas turkey season. Sales of frozen turkeys were up, he said, which reflected some concern about the supply of poultry. But he said total sales of turkeys were in line with previous years and showed the public had little fear of eating poultry. While a definitive cause of the B.C. outbreak has not been revealed, local poultry farmers have been told that migratory birds most likely brought the virus.

Metal fundraiser for five-year-old A local steel and automobile recycling facility is holding a fundraiser on Saturday, Jan. 17 to raise funds for a couple whose five-year-old daughter is battling cancer. On that day from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., CCON Metals Inc. (34252 Industrial Way) invites citizens to drop off their scrap metals and donate the funds to the family of Greta Loewen. As well, CCON will also donate $10 for every ton of metals that enter the yard that day. People are also welcome to participate after that date by dropping off their scrap metals and saying the funds are for Greta’s fundraiser. CCON Metals president Greg Dahl said the company would like to challenge businesses – such as electricians, plumbers and body shops – that have scrap metal as a by-product to participate. Greta was diagnosed in mid-December with a rare form of bone cancer. Her parents are by her side during her treatment at B.C. Children’s Hospital and cannot work. The funds will be used to support their day-today expenses as well as any medical treatment for Greta outside of Canada.

Potential conflict handled well An unusual set of circumstances which recently unfolded in city hall deserve comment. Through a corporation of which he is the sole director, a longtime Abbotsford businessman made political donations to the mayoral challenger and four incumbent councillors during last fall’s civic elections. At the time, Paul Esposito also had a development proposal “in-stream” – that is, his project had been handled by city staff but not yet considered by council. When Henry Braun became the new mayor, and the four incumbent councillors were re-elected, they were placed in a position where a potential Community Charter conflict of interest could be perceived when Esposito’s project came before them for consideration, due to the donations. Such a situation would appropriately see councillors recuse themselves from a vote on the proposal, but in so doing, council would not have the necessary quorum.

Citizens are frequently disappointed and perturbed by politicians who fail to understand or appreciate conflict of interest situations, or more importantly, the public perception of bias which often arises. In this case, a process existed to address the situation, and it was followed. A BC Supreme Court order was obtained to allow the council members involved to vote, and they officially declared their potential conflict. Voters and the media are quick to level criticism when elected representatives run afoul of the rules, or show a disdain for public optics. Regardless of the amount of money donated in this case, which was minor – $1,000 for the mayor and $300 for each councillor – this had potential to create negative perceptions. It may still do so for some, but this was an example of political transparency and observance of proper process. Other councils and politicians should take note.

B.C. Views My Christmas reading included a fascinating new book called Kennewick Man, a study of skeletal remains discovered in 1996 on the bank of the Columbia River in eastern Washington. He was an ancient hunter buried just south of B.C. almost 9,000 years ago, in the Early Holocene period following the last Ice Age. Among the oldest humans found along the West Coast of North America, he sparked an unprecedented battle by the Smithsonian Institution to examine the skeleton and publish the book late last year. The most controversial evidence came from the skull. It doesn’t match the classic Mongoloid profile of modern aboriginal people, key to the theory that the earliest humans reached North America by land bridge from Siberia to Alaska as glaciers receded.

Smithsonian scientists confirmed initial reports that Kennewick Man is a closer match with early Polynesians, and the Ainu people who remain in Japan today. He lived until about age 40, surviving for years with a stone spear point stuck in his hip. The authors conclude from chemical analysis that “Kennewick Man could not have been a longtime resident of the area where he was found, but instead lived most of his adult life somewhere along the Northwest and North Pacific coast where marine mammals were readily available.” This suggests migration by sea, perhaps from a great distance. The U.S. Army seized the skeleton. The scientists sued and eventually won the right to a brief examination. The court case exposed brutal and illegal actions of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and federal departments to destroy the site and intimidate the scientists. U.S. law demanded all remains from before European settlement be repatriated for burial by local tribes, without examination. Umatilla tribe spokesman Armand Minthorn wrote in 1996: “We view this practice as desecration of the body and a violation of our most deeply held religious

beliefs. “From our oral histories, we know that our people have been part of this land since the beginning of time. We do not believe that our people migrated here from another continent, as the scientists do.” The head of the Society for American

Archaeology tried to get the researchers to drop their lawsuit, fearing it would interfere with fragile relationships with area tribes. The U.S. Justice Department warned the Smithsonian that lead scientist Douglas Owsley and others might be in criminal conflict of interest as federal employees suing the government. Even the White House weighed in against them. Meanwhile, the skeleton was mishandled and later stored in substandard conditions at a Seattle museum, where it remains

today. Parts of both femurs were lost, and scientists were falsely accused of taking them. They had been removed by tribal representatives and secretly buried. Kennewick Man was found as the army was in tense negotiations with tribes on salmon fishing rights on the Columbia, their demand for removal of dams, and the $100-billion cleanup of the Hanford nuclear site. The scientists finally won their case in 2004, with a ruling that the skeleton is so old there isn’t enough evidence to show it is related to the current tribes. The judge found the army repeatedly misled the court, and assessed the government $2.4 million in costs. The U.S. Army still controls the skeleton and denies requests for further study. The spear point, for example, could show the location where he was injured. One final irony. Analysis shows Kennewick Man ate mostly salmon in his later years, around 6300 BCE. These are the salmon runs wiped out by dams built by U.S. Army engineers before the signing of the Columbia River Treaty with B.C.

letters An unsung national team that deserves a cheer These past weeks I’ve been one of the commissionaires doing security at the Abbotsford poultry farms hit with the Avian influenza. As on-site security, I had the oppor-

tunity to see our tax dollars at work, and I was impressed with our Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Officers from all over the country came here to contain

the outbreak and to save our poultry industry. The CFIA not only knew what had to be done, they went about getting it done, working long hours in difficult

situations. It was clear they had the confidence of the farmers, and knock on a wooden barn door, it would appear the outbreak has been contained. I’d also like to

acknowledge the work of the hazard team, Quantum. They shared the dedication of the CFIA in bringing the outbreak under control. It may be in vogue to belittle

government employees, but I know these dedicated men and women saved the day. At a time when our national juniors hockey team was winning glory, I was aware of

On Friday, Jan. 9, in the afternoon, I fell on the sidewalk at the corner of South Fraser Way and Gladwin Road. I hit my face on the pavement, breaking my nose and putting a tooth through my upper lip. So many people came to my aid and I was unable to thank anyone at the time. I would really like to do that now. To the two women who came and knelt by me, trying to keep me calm and talking to me while waiting for paramedics – words aren’t enough. You are angels, thank you. To the woman who came forward with the blanket, I was starting to get cold and you are a blessing. I’m not sure if you are the same woman who said you saw what happened, but if you are I would like to talk to you if that is possible – I have your blanket. To the paramedics, firefighters and police who all responded, again words can’t express how grateful I am to all of you. Finally, the doctors, nurses and staff at Abbotsford Hospital. As always your care was excellent. In spite of ambulances parked outside three deep when I was brought in, everyone was calm and efficient and took care of me far faster than I thought possible given the number of other patients waiting to been looked after. Thank you all.

Gallery 7 presents Shadowlands You Deserve It! Depicts story of C.S. Lewis and poet Joy Gresham Gallery 7 Theatre presents its production of Shadowlands starting Jan. 23 in Abbotsford. The play, written by William Nicholson, depicts the touching story of C.S. Lewis and his romance with American poet Joy Gresham. The serene world of Lewis – Oxford professor, famous author and determined bachelor – is turned inside out when he is visited by the spirited Gresham. What starts as a cordial friendship transforms into an ardent romance. When Gresham develops terminal cancer, Lewis is forced to rethink his stoic philosophy on pain and suffering and experiences love and compassion on an entirely new level. This West-End and Broadway hit explores the power of love, and how suffering and loss can both challenge and transform a person’s character and resolve. Shadowlands was previously produced by Gallery 7 Theatre 13 years ago as part of its 2001/2002 theatre season. The play has also seen two film treatments: one for BBC Television featuring Joss Auckland as C.S. Lewis, and the other, released in cinemas, starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger. Directing the play is Trinity Western University professor of theatre Dr. Lloyd Arnett, who last directed Cotton Patch Gospel for Gallery 7 Theatre. Playing the role of C.S. Lewis is Jay Danziger, who will be remembered for his performances in Damien and The Foreigner, while playing Gresham is newcomer Gemma Martini. Martini has extensive performance experience, having appeared in productions of Alone Together, Rabbit Hole and All My Sons. John Dawson, who has appeared in many Gallery 7 Theatre productions over the years, takes on the role of Warnie, C.S. Lewis’s brother, while Larry Hamm plays the role of Christopher

In an active learning environment, kids are keen to exercise their imagination and try a wide variety of game settings,” she said. Tsou said the benefits include promoting students’ literacy and numeracy skills and practising other skills such as creating graphics, sound effects and musical scores. She said that although constructing multiple-level games can be challenging, students quickly discover that careful planning can avoid a collision with an enemy and extend the playing time. Through designing race or puzzle games, many are inspired to craft advanced games that require teamwork, planning, problem-solving and decision-making, Tsou added. Tsou has integrated the GameMaker project into her IT 8 classes since 2011.

Batter up: it’s fastpitch registration time Abbotsford Minor Fastpitch Association sign-up begins Jan. 17 Local fastpitch players have had plenty to be excited about lately. In December the Olympic Organizing Committee announced that softball and baseball would be considered for inclusion in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan. That news, coupled with the fact that Surrey will be hosting the 2016 Women’s World Fastpitch Championships for 10 days next July, has the sport in the spotlight, locally and globally.

Of course the first step for young players dreaming about representing their country is to join their community association. Former Abbotsford Minor Fa s t p i t c h Association (AMFA) JENNER player and current Team Canada athletic pool member Chelsea Jenner started playing at the ‘Mighty-Mite’ level when she was six years old. “It became a big part of my life.

Softball has taught me many life lessons such as: determination, leadership, time management and perseverance, especially pursuing your dreams. HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

The 55th annual Snowball Classic Basketball Tournament tipped off Wednesday (past the News’ deadline) with a game between host Abbotsford and Robert Bateman. This year the popular tournament hosted at Abbotsford Senior Secondary from Jan.

FRIESEN Reuben Raymond 1942 ~ 2015 Reuben Friesen, loving brother, husband, father and grandfather, went to be in the presence of our dear Lord on January 6, 2015. He is survived by his devoted wife, Diane, his sisters Lorene and Jean, his two sons Todd (Liz) and Chris (Jessica) and three daughters Lisa (Greg), Lisamay (Chris) and Laura (Kevin) and his beloved eleven grandchildren Miranda, Brad, Colton, Nic, Channelle, Nolan, Myles, Madison, Kyla, Lincoln and Victoria. Bruno passed on to be with the Lord at the age of 81 after several years of battling renal failure and more recently cancer. Bruno was born in Chilliwack, BC, to Henry and Olga Muller and was part of a large family of nine children, one brother and seven sisters. He later married Anne Harder and as family was always very important to him, had six children of his own. He spent much of his life in service to others with his focus in the last 10 years of his life being on feeding, clothing and finding homes for the homeless. He leaves behind his wife Anne, six children, Pat (Brian), Phil (Cathy), George (Violet), Lee, Pam (Wilf) and Paula (Greg), as well as 23 grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

Chris and his wife Josephine lived in Abbotsford where they were just recently blessed with the birth of their son Tristan. Chris was a true outdoorsman with a love for fishing, hiking, camping and hunting. Raised in Summerland, BC until leaving home for College, Chris was very involved in the game of hockey, both playing and watching. Chris’ love for horses and his equestrian ability took him all over BC, Alberta and Washington competing in three Day Eventing, and Spruce Meadows competing in Hunter Classes. Chris is survived by his wife Josephine, son Tristan, parents Garry and Jeane, one brother Ken (Pam) one sister Dawn and her daughter Kassidy, Grandmothers - Mary Ternquist and Mary McCormick, one Aunt Bonnie and one cousin Morey (Tracey) and many great aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Passed peacefully while surrounded with the love of her family, after a 6 day bedside vigil. Mom was fearless and funny. As a young wife and mother, she and Dad moved the whole family from Manchester, England to Thompson, Manitoba and eventually settled in Vancouver, BC. She parasailed, took flying lessons (at the age 60) and surprised family, at one gathering, with her juggling skills. Travelling was a favourite passion and she and Dad thought nothing of getting in their car and driving to wherever they wanted to go. One of her favourite places was Palm Springs; she adored the sun, shopping and swimming. She was an accomplished knitter, crafter, creator and never shied from a challenge. Together Mom and Dad made sure we never went without. Mom loved her life, and is survived by her husband of 54 years Andrew Hallworth; 3 children: Sharon & Gary Laxon, Gary & Glenys Hallworth, Sandra & Mark Vancoughnett, 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She never missed an opportunity to be with us, and we, shall always miss her. If you wish to honour Trish please make a donation to the Alzheimers Society of BC www.alzheimerbc.org. Thank you to the staff at Menno Homes for caring for her over the past two years during her decline in health with the terrible illness that is Alzheimers.
