An Abbotsford man has been ordered to pay almost $4.3 million to the B.C. Securities Commission (BCSC) and has been permanently banned from B.C.’s capital markets for making false stock reports. BCSC announced the decision Monday against

Colin Robert Hugh McCabe, 30, who previously published the monthly Elite Stock Report from his home in Abbotsford. The commission has ordered that McCabe resign from any position he holds as an officer or a director of an issuer or registrant. He is also permanently banned from those positions, as well as from trading in securities, purchasing securities or exchange contracts, en-

gaging in investor relations activities and acting in a management or consultative capacity in the securities market. McCabe’s fine is a combination of almost $2.8 million he obtained as a result of his misconduct and an administrative penalty of $1.5 million. McCabe paid millions to write ‘grossly misleading’ reports From A1

$65,000 and pay back funds of about $502,000. McCabe researched stocks, using publicly available information such as websites and news releases. If he thought they had potential of being profitable, he would write about them in his newsletter. The Elite Stock Report was distributed only by direct unsolicited mail in the U.S. A BCSC panel found that between October 2009 and July 2010, McCabe published “grossly misleading reports” about three companies.

These were designed to “significantly increase trading volumes in the shares of (the three companies) in order to inflate their stock price,” the BCSC stated. The commission said McCabe was paid more than $5 million, which was transferred to offshore and Swiss bank accounts. Among the companies about which McCabe wrote was Guinness Exploration Inc. He claimed that Guinness had purchased an 8,000acre property in the Yukon which contained an estimated one million ounces of gold.

McCabe’s report said investing in the project would hand his subscribers “monster gains inside the next 60 days … and could go 10-for1 in the next 12 months.” The commission stated that McCabe was paid a total of $2.65 million by Erwin Speckert, the managing director of a Swiss company called Everest Asset Management. Speckert was acting as a middleman for a party that he has refused to name, and the arrangements were designed to “conceal the flow of funds” to McCabe from whomever Speckert was representing,

according to the BCSC. As a result of his role, Speckert has also been permanently banned by the BCSC from B.C.’s capital markets. The other two companies that McCabe wrote about in a misleading manner were Tuffnell Exploration Ltd. and Gunpowder Gold Corp. Each company paid McCabe $1.2 million to produce and distribute 850,000 copies of the Elite Stock Report. In its decision, the commission stated that McCabe and Speckert pose serious risks to investors and the industry. McCabe had argued

that his misconduct was not deliberate and he thought what he was doing was legal. McCabe’s actions are also the subject of a complaint filed by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which alleges McCabe was paid $16 million between January 2008 and February 2011 for false write-ups in his Elite Stock Report, The Stock Profiteer and Resource Stock Advisor. The SEC is seeking to have McCabe repay the funds and ban him from participating in such activity in the future.

Abbotsford Police dealt with 18 accidents in 24 hours following the snowfall in the Fraser Valley over the weekend. Const. The boys were so excited to see their families. [Jake] hugged us and he was so excited. They all had their gold medals.” Brigitte and Rainer had to schedule vacation time well in advance of Team Canada announcing its final roster for the tournament. “We just said if he makes it great and if no well, we’re just on holidays. It worked out really well. None of us would have missed it for the world.” On Tuesday morning the Virtanens were preparing for a flight back to Abbotsford and Jake had already left Toronto to meet up with his WHL team in Moose Jaw, Sask. He has his gold medal with him. His parents offered to take the medal home with them to Abbotsford, but he declined. “They wanted to wear them on the plane I think,” said Brigitte.

Abbotsford’s Jake Virtanen found gold with Canada’s world junior hockey team Monday night in a dramatic 5-4 victory over Russia before 18,000 screaming fans at a packed Air Canada Centre in Toronto. After leaping out to a 5-1 advantage in the second period, Russia narrowed the Canadians’ lead to just one heading into the final 20 minutes. But with the nation’s eyes on them, the Canadians held on for nation’s first world junior gold since 2009. The team also included Aldergrove’s Shea Theodore who, like Virtanen, spent several years at Yale secondary’s hockey academy, and graduated from the local high school. Virtanen – a first-round draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks – said many of the players – like hockey fans in Abbotsford and beyond – could barely watch the final minutes of the game. “The guys, I don’t think some guys were even looking at the play on the bench,” Virtanen told Sportsnet after the game. “It was heads down, hope for the best, cross your fingers. “Singing O Canada at the end of the game was unreal, and a moment I’ll never forget.” While he didn’t figure on the scoresheet Monday night, Virtanen made the highlights with a spectacular check of a Russian player in the first period. Virtanen finished the tournament with one goal and four points. Theodore,

That success will likely see the event return to Tradex next year. “I think we all realize that the event struck a chord with locals.”

A man who was arrested in 2012 as a suspect in a drive-by shooting in Abbotsford was fatally shot last Friday in North Delta. Arundeep Cheema, 24, of Surrey was gunned down while sitting in his vehicle in the driveway of the North Delta home he was visiting, according to the Delta Police Department. The shooting took place at about 8:20 p.m. in the 11800 block of 75A Ave. No arrests have been made. Cheema was among four men arrested Sept. 4, 2012 after police received a report of shots having been fired in the 2500 block of Bradner Road in Abbotsford. According to “information to obtain (ITO) a search warrant” documents obtained by the Abbotsford News in January 2013, among those arrested with Cheema was Jujhar Khun-Khun, now awaiting trial with two others for the murder of Red Scorpion gangster Jonathan Bacon in August 2011. The ITO stated that police stopped the four men in a Dodge Charger that had been seen leaving the area after shots were heard. A man who had been in a second car at the scene was shot in the arm, but his three companions were not injured. The group had apparently just

The four men arrested were released and none has been charged in relation to the shooting. The Bradner Road residence had been the scene of a prior drive-by shooting in January 2011. Police at the time said the home was occupied by two brothers known to police. According to the ITO documents, one of those brothers was in the vehicle shot at during the incident on Sept. 4, 2012. The other brother is known to have connections to the Bacon brothers, formerly of Abbotsford. Shortly after the shooting, Abbotsford Police installed video surveillance cameras in the 2500 block of Bradner Road. Khun-Khun himself was the victim of three targeted shootings – he was critically injured in two of them – before his arrest in February 2013 for the Bacon slaying in Kelowna. Khun-Khun and his co-accused Michael Kerry Hunter and Jason Thomas McBride are currently in prison awaiting their murder trial, which has been slated to start April 4, 2016 in Kelowna.

It was a crisp day in October when Robert Barnes took Jelly Bean — his small shih tzu Lhasa apso mix — to play at Grant Park. The pair visited the on-leash park almost daily before Barnes started his afternoon shift with a parcel delivery company. But on this day, the visit turned tragic when a pair of collies that were not leashed attacked Jelly Bean while Barnes had briefly stepped into the washroom. By the time he managed to get the collies off his 26-pound dog, it was badly injured. “They just wrecked my dog,” he explained. “[It was] very upsetting.” The owner of the dogs who attacked Jelly Bean drove along with Barnes to a nearby pet hospital and paid the $1,800 bill. But the attack left Jelly Bean blind and behaving strangely. Eventually, he had to

Canadian man suffers medical distress U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Huntingdon border crossing helped save the life of a 56-year-old Canadian man last week. The Kamloops man and his wife arrived at the border on Dec. 29 to cross from Abbotsford into Sumas in the U.S. at about 3:30 p.m. They were in a motorhome destined for a four-month winter tour of the U.S. when, during a routine secondary screening, the man collapsed to the floor

and was gasping for breath. Supervisory CBP officer Nicholas Sowell and CBP officers Randy Mulanax and Douglas Stuit immediately began rendering CPR. CBP officer Heather Hentz notified 911, requesting emergency medical technicians (EMTs). CBP officers and a responding Sumas Police Department officer continued CPR until the EMTs arrived at 3:45 p.m. Sowell retrieved the port’s automated external defibrillator (AED) and when the EMTs

arrived, they used the AED three times before transporting the victim by ambulance to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center in Bellingham. “The quick and professional response by CBP personnel in Sumas saved this man’s life,” said CBP’s Sumas port director J. Rene Ortega. “The heroic actions of all involved exemplify the collaboration between CBP, local law enforcement and first responders to protect and serve our communities and our visitors.”

Other Hand I would hazard a guess that in most garages across Canada, there is hidden away a sleigh or toboggan, just waiting for a snow day and a squealing kid to run it down a nearby slope. However, in cities across our nation and in many in the U.S., laws are in place designed to keep the sliders hidden away, all thanks to litigious fools who believe we should live in a nanny state. Just last year, the city of Hamilton, Ontario, which by the way has banned tobogganing for many years and levies a heavy fine for scofflaws, was ordered to pay $900,000 to a lawyer who injured his spine on a toboggan run. Where is personal responsibility and where is legal justice? The guy chose

to enjoy the thrill of sliding, knowingly flouted the law in doing so, then succeeded in having the city ruled responsible for his injury. A similar suit, for a similar amount, was also filed in Edmonton by a woman when her sled ran into something. In the U.S., of course, those settlements are two to three times as much, and as a result many cities in snowfall states have instituted sliding bans. No one denies that many sports are dangerous, and rocketing down a snowcovered slope with virtually no means of control is apparently only out-ranked in danger by scuba diving, snowmobiling and skydiving. I have yet to hear of anyone from the latter three activities suing the ocean, the mountain or the farmer’s field where they were injured or died. So why should a city be responsible, particularly one that has instituted a ban on such activity with heavy fines in place to further discourage it? A question perhaps best addressed to the lenient courts of our land that appear to

encourage and reward irresponsibility, and regard common sense as inconsequential. If it looks dangerous, is against the law, and you do it anyway – suffer the consequences! End of story, end of litigation.

And it is your responsibility, not anyone else’s, to ensure you mitigate as much of that danger as you possibly can. Fall while skiing, get tossed from a horse, zip the ends off your fingers on a table saw, get injured while sledding – not things you want, or plan, to do. But they can happen when you choose risky activities. HAFI Funds Home Modifications for Disabled Man When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced. “The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.” Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheelin shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

“ I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.” Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home. The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

tional caring. One gentleman delivered the food that was to go to a meal for the hungry. Others brought blankets and afghans from their cars to keep the injured warm. Some even took off their own jackets for this purpose. People offered rides and to contact family. A traumatic event was made a little less traumatic by all those caring compassionate people. Ukrainian new year celebrated Annual Malanka takes place on Jan. 17 at Sts. Joachim and Ann’s Church hall Each year, Canadians of Ukrainian heritage celebrate their Christmas and their New Year’s celebration – Malanka – some two weeks after the rest of the general population. This year, the Ukrainian Club of Abbotsford hosts its annual Malanka New Year’s Dinner and Dance on Saturday, Jan. 17 at Sts. Joachim and Ann’s Church hall, 2827 273 St. in Aldergrove. While most of the western world adheres to the Gregorian calendar which was established in 1582, many Ukrainians still recognize the holidays of the much older Julian calendar. The night of Jan. 6 sees a traditional 12-course Christmas

meal being served in households, with a kolach (braided loaf) as a supper-table centrepiece, and a didukh (or decorated sheaf of wheat) standing nearby. When the youngest member of the family announces that a star is visible in the night sky on Svyata Vechera, the hospodar (or host) helps him light a candle, which is placed in the window. The candle is a signal to any traveller who is lost or prevented by weather from reaching home that a place is available for him at the hospodar’s table. After a traditional prayer, the first of 12 dishes is served: a centuries-old delicacy of wheat and poppy seeds and honey.

A week later, Ukrainians bring in the new year with their Malanka, or New Year’s celebration.

The Malanka celebration in Aldergrove features a meal of Ukrainian cuisine (perogies, holoptsi and the

like) and is followed by a dance with live music by S-Bahn. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the Yevshan

Empty coal trains have stopped running on Southern Railway of BC (SRY) tracks through Abbotsford after the company locked out its 126 workers Monday following a vote last week to reject the company’s

“final offer” for a new contract. SRY moves freight around the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley and operates a yard off Vye Road in Abbotsford. The company employs 20 people in Abbotsford and moves goods for several Abbotsford companies. While SRY continues to run its

Abbotsford’s Jarod Algra will compete for Team BC in biathlon at the 2015 Canada Winter Games in Prince George next month. Algra was among the eight athletes named to the team based on results from the North American Cup #1 biathlon event held in Canmore, Alta., last month. Over the next two months, athletes named to Team BC will train with their home clubs and then participate in a pair of provincial biathlon events before going to the Canada Winter Games: BC Cup 1 in Quesnel from Jan. 3 to 4 and BC Cup 2 in Whistler from Jan. 24 to 25. ANDERSON Richard 1949 ~ 2015 It saddens us to announce the passing of Richard on January 2, 2015, a loving husband, father and brother. Richard passed away peacefully into the presence of his Lord after a hard fought battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Patricia, sons Gerald (Sarah) and Matthew (Christina), brother Robert (Valerie) and sister Myrna. ISAAK Abram Ernie Abram Ernie Isaak passed away on December 24, 2014. Born on May 9, 1934 in Yarrow, BC, Ernie was the youngest of nine. Ernie founded his own trucking and bobcat business which he operated for 38 years. He loved to sing solos or in quartets and choirs. He is predeceased by his wife, Marianne Isaak, and leaves behind a son and daughter-in-law, Glen and Rita, a daughter Dianne and four grandsons: Matthew, Marc, Luc and John. DE JONG Geertruid It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our dear Mom, Grandma and Great-grandma, Mrs. Geertruid (Truus) De Jong, late of Abbotsford, BC who passed away after a short illness, on January 3, 2015 at the age of 81 at Christine Morrison Hospice. She is survived by: Victor (Beryl), Dan (Ann), Tina (Martin) Houweling, Irene (Albert) DeLange, John (Louise), Wayne (Marlene), Mariann (Jason) Valstar, 26 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband, John. Knowing fully that her hope and strength was in her Lord and Savior Jesus, she was filled with peace and courage during her one month hospital stay. Mom was born June 25, 1933 to Dirk and Minka Vanderklok in the Netherlands, the first of 6 children. The family immigrated to Canada in August 1952. She met our Dad in Ladner, where they married and had 7 children. They farmed in Ladner until April 1973 and then purchased their own farm in Deroche, BC. Our Dad, John passed away in 1979 and Mom continued farming for a number of years then moved to Abbotsford and had many wonderful years with her community at Cascade Court. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Living Hope Christian Reformed Church at 34631 Old Clayburn Road, Abbotsford, BC, with Pastor Dan Tielmann officiating. Interment was held at Hazelwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations in memory of Truus (Geertruid) may be made to Christine Morrison Hospice. The family so appreciated the love and gentle care shown to Mom by the staff during her stay and also to the family as we came to visit. Tributes and condolences may be left at:

Zelma Nickel passed into the presence of the Lord on December 31, 2014 at the age of 88 years. She was born July 15, 1926 in Lucky Lake, SK, the oldest of 9 children. She was predeceased by her brother Elmer in 1943 and her parents Bernhard K. Sawatzky in 1973 and Mary Sawatzky (Krahn) 1989. She is survived by her husband John B. Nickel, sons John (Charlotte) Nickel and Elmer (Ricka) Nickel, six grandchildren; Tanya (Don) Coghill, Chad (Tracy) Nickel, Kevin Nickel, Ashley Nickel (Kris Por), Meghan (Trevor) Brown, Courtney (Steve) Klassen, five great grandchildren; Tyler Coghill, Reilley Coghill, Koah Klassen, Davis Klassen and Sadie Brown, as well as seven siblings and their spouses, one sister-in-law and a host of nieces and nephews. There will be a viewing at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 2310 Clearbrook Rd., in Abbotsford on Thursday, January 8, 2015 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. A celebration of Zelma’s life will be held at Central Heights Church, 1661 McCallum Road in Abbotsford on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 1:30 pm. The family expresses their deepest gratitude to the Menno Home for their incredible care of Zelma as well as to Dr. M. Campbell who went beyond the call of duty in caring for our mother. She was born in Speers, Saskatchewan April 30, 1929 to David and Barbara Friesen along with 2 brothers and 3 sisters. She married William (Bill) Rempel in 1947 and had 6 children. Most of her adult life was spent in Mission raising her family, serving the Lord in the church, working as a volunteer for MCC and visiting family and friends. She loved to travel to see relatives and was a great host to those who returned the visit. Barbara was predeceased by Bill in 1968. She was also predeceased by an infant son, her parents, brothers Jake and Isaac and sister Betty and many in-laws. She is survived by daughters Connie (Dan) Schubert and Debbie (Wayne) Perry and sons Rob, Phil (Elsie), and Dan (Linda), brother David Friesen, sister Sarah Bueckert, sister-in-law Mary Nickel, 16 grandchildren and spouses, 26 great grandchildren and many other cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. A Visitation will be held at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home 7386 Horne Street, Mission on Wednesday, January 8th from 6:30 8:00 pm. Jean was born in South Vancouver, BC, the eldest daughter of John and Anna (Neate) Soutar. She is survived by her only sibling, Ruth Wollman; nieces Cathie, Jean and Sandra; nephews, John and Victor; 8 great nieces and nephews, and 5 great-great nieces and nephews. She graduated from John Oliver High School in 1939 and completed teacher’s training at Vancouver Normal School in 1943. She taught until 1949 in Lake Cowichan, Victoria, Cawston, and Hammond, BC. She then attended Briercrest College in Caronport, SK for a year of Bible training, and through continuing education obtained a Bachelor of Theology in 1969 from Northwest Baptist Theological College. She was accepted by Sudan Interior Mission (now SIM International) in 1950, and studied French in Paris for a year before serving first as a teacher and then as a Bible Translator in northern Benin (formerly Dahomey). Jean was the team leader of a dedicated group that over 30 years completed the translation of the Bible from French into the Bariba language. After 38 years of service she retired in 1990 to Abbotsford, BC. Not one to retire quietly, Jean continued to actively serve others through tutoring in French and ESL, leading Bible Studies, and mentoring younger women. Throughout her life she exhibited trust in the Lord, interest in family and friends, and a quiet confidence and assurance in her relationship with God. Interment will take place on Saturday, January 10th, 2015 at 11am at Maclure Road Cemetery in Abbotsford, and a memorial service will follow at 2pm at Immanuel Fellowship Baptist Church, 2950 Blue Jay St., Abbotsford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to SIM International or Immanuel Fellowship Baptist Church.

WILLIAMS Ann Ann Williams of Abbotsford, BC, passed away on January 4, 2015 at the age of 87. Ann was born in Uffa, Russia and immigrated to Canada in 1929. The family started homesteading in Caster, Alberta. Ann married Jack in 1946 in Edmonton, Alberta. They moved to Abbotsford in 1954 and in 1960 Ann opened Ann’s Beauty Parlor on Montrose Ave. Ann had a passion for family and friends. Ann loved to cook, sew and garden, and donate time to Helping Hands. She is lovingly remembered by 3 sons: Steven (Karen), Rick (Janice), Wayne (Wendy); daughter, Deborah Cameron; 9 grandchildren: Daniel (Jenni), Jeremy, Kristall (Ryan), Daniel (Tara), Jordan, Libby (Adam), Sean (Pax), Rhys, Graylen; great-grandson, Braydon, and 3 siblings: Elisabeth, Mary and Art. Many thanks to the Hallmark on the Park staff, and the Abbotsford Regional Hospital nurses and doctors who gave Ann such wonderful loving care. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack. A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, January 9, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Abbotsford Evangelical Free Church, 33218 Marshall Road, Abbotsford, BC with Pastor Don Murdoch officiating.
