Nurse practitioner hired for clinic

Karl Hardt, communications officer for Interior Health (IH), confirmed the hiring of a nurse practitioner for Rock Creek to support the primary health care needs of residents of the area. “Based at the Rock Creek Medical Clinic, Celia Evanson will work Tuesday to Thursday and begin accepting patients the week of Jan. 27,” Hardt said. According to the IH press release, Evanson has a wealth of experience as a nurse practitioner and nurse. She comes to Interior Health from Northern Health and spent time earlier in her career working as a nurse in the Boundary area. Rock Creek Community Medical Society president Terry Keough told the Times that a nurse practitioner is able to prescribe most medications, refer to specialists and order lab tests. He said the medial records at the clinic are now being digitized and the medical society is planning to hold a public meeting soon to inform the community of the new doctor. “The bottom line is, I am fairly confident from the discussions we had with Interior Health that this will be a long-term solution as long as the community comes out and uses the services. “We have more than doubled the hours of service from the previous doctor,” Keough added. “It really was an early Christmas present for us.” The Rock Creek Community Medical Society can be found online at rockcreekmedical.ca or reached by phone at 250-446-2272.

Motorcyclists turn heads

A pair of English adventure motorcyclists are living their dream as they travel across Canada in the middle of winter. They turned a lot of heads when they stopped at The Spot in Midway on their way through the Boundary last Thursday. They are travelling on Honda C90 step-through motorbikes. But what really gets people’s attention is the way both bikes are decked out with Christmas decorations; in fact a fully-trimmed Christmas tree sits on the back of one bike – the turn signals have been wired into large bulbs attached at port and starboard on the tree. Rachel Lasham and Ed March have been on the road since July 27. They flew their bikes from the UK to Anchorage and then rode up to Prudhoe Bay. Turning south again they entered Canada at the beginning of November on six-month visas. “We have been riding in minus 19 and sleeping in minus 25,” said Rachel. “You kind of get used to it. Instead of running away from the cold, if you just embrace it. Winter is no reason to put your bike away.” The couple is planning to celebrate Christmas Day near Banff. Then they are heading to Nova Scotia and will return to the west coast through the US. After looping back into Canada they will head south to Argentina. All this travel on bikes that have a top speed of 80 km per hour. When asked how the trip was funded, Ed said, “Work a lot and don’t buy shiny new things basically.” For the last two and a half years Rachel worked three jobs for seven days a week; Ed one job seven days a week. This isn’t his first trip. That was in 2011, riding from Malaysia to the UK. In fact, Canada is his 36th country on the same bike. Last year he led a group tour of seven guys on a motorcycle trip from Mongolia to England.

Asked why they are such small bikes Ed said cost is one bike advantage. “Shipping costs to get our bikes over here for one thing; plus if you have an engine failure you can buy a brand new engine on EBay for $150, whereas to get a service done on a big motorbike would cost you about $300. So for us it’s cheaper to not get them serviced, just buy a new engine; and when you buy a new engine it comes with new oil so you don’t even need to lubricate.” Rachel added that the smaller bikes are more stable because they are low to the ground. “Canadians are amazing,” said Rachel. “They are so friendly and generous. Anyone who has any doubts about the humanity in the world should get out there and travel.” She also advises that you never listen to people who say you can’t do something “Live out your dream—try it, if you fail you fail. Merry Christmas The call for political correctness around the Christmas season is nothing new. The question of whether to wish someone happy holidays or Merry Christmas rages on year after year. Using either greeting can result in a lot of anger and angst. Some will be upset if you use the “C” word; others will get bent out of shape if you don’t. One example of taking political correctness to an absurd level occurred during the McCarthy hearings in the States in the ‘50s. Fearing being labelled a Communist sympathizer, Gene Autry removed the following verse from Here Comes Santa Claus: Here comes Santa Claus, here comes Santa Claus, Right down Santa Claus lane He doesn’t care if you’re rich or poor He loves you just the same Santa Claus knows we’re all God’s children That makes everything right So fill your hearts with Christmas cheer ‘Cause Santa Claus comes tonight!

Ties declared in contest Winners of the Greenwood Christmas tree light up were announced on Saturday at City Hall. On behalf of the Greenwood Board of Trade, Colleen Fraser and Kim Kinakin made sure hot chocolate was available. The business category, sponsored by the BOT, resulted in a tie for first place between Deadwood Junction and Motherlode Icecream Bistro. They split the pot for first, second and third— taking home $52.50 each. The City of Greenwood sponsored the residential light up, also ended in a tie for first. Baldy to open soon Submitted

G-Force Group is pleased to announce that the Mount Baldy ski resort has been rescued from the Insolvency Grinch who stole it from its ski communities just before Christmas last year and is scheduled to reopen early in January. G-Force Real Estate Inc. was appointed marketing agent in mid-July 2014 by a secured creditor who had received conduct of sale from the Supreme Court of British Columbia. G-Force’s primary objective was to find a buyer who would be able to complete an acquisition in time to operate the resort for the 2014-15 season. Although an earlier sale initiative in October failed, another prospect, Fred Johnston from Calgary, soon after made an offer to manage the resort for the current ski season and acquire it at the end of the season. In or-

der to complete these transactions, G. Powroznik Group Inc., of G-Force Group, was appointed receiver-manager of Mount Baldy Ski Resort Corporation and related companies by the Supreme Court of British Columbia on Dec. 18, 2014. The receiver-manager promptly entered into an operating agreement with Mr. Johnston’s company, Baldy Operating Corporation, to operate the ski resort for the current season. Matt Koenig will serve as mountain manager. A related company, Baldy Capital Corporation, arranged the interim financing for this year’s operations as an interim step for it to acquire the assets of Mount Baldy Ski Resort from the receiver-manager by the end of the current season. ABE still free at Selkirk

In light of proposed changes to Adult Basic Education (ABE) programs from the provincial government, Selkirk College President Angus Graeme is reassuring current and prospective students that academic upgrading courses will continue to be free of charge for the next semester. “Selkirk College has no plans to charge tuition for ABE in January,” Graeme says. “Our Board approved our tuition fees for the 2014-2015 academic year this past February through to July 2015. Government’s decision to lift the tuition-free policy for ABE programming in B.C. will not change our plans for providing tuition-free ABE opportunities for learners at this time.” The provincial government announced last week that starting Jan. 1, 2015, public post-secondary institutions will now be allowed to charge tuition fees for all adult upgrading courses, including ESL (English as a Secondary Language). In 2008, the Ministry of Advanced Education provided $6.9 million in base funding to the public post-secondary system for tuition-free delivery of upgrading courses. The recent decision may have an impact on Selkirk College’s overall budget, but Graeme says the college is currently working out the details of the extent changes will have to frontline delivery. Selkirk College offers ABE programming out of its Castlegar, Nelson, Trail, Kaslo, Nakusp and Grand Forks locations. For the Fall of 2014, Selkirk College registered 457 students in ABE courses. Upgrading with Adult Basic Education courses provides a wide variety of options for learners in the West KootenayBoundary region. A large number of the students registered in ABE each year use their completed courses as a springboard into further educational opportunities.
