Christmas celebrations from around the world

Christmas traditions mean different things to different people, especially in a setting like the West Kootenay which has attracted people from all corners of the world for generations. Here’s a look at how local residents, new and old, celebrated in their hometowns.

From Italy to the Silver City BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff

Opening up our hearts to the real needs of the world is what the Christmas season means to Vicki Bisaro. What we need is peace and a little less of the material things that don't really matter. The 97-year-old pillar of the Trail community sat down with the Trail Times to reminisce about Christmas past in the Silver City. But first the story begins with her recollections of living in Northern Italy until she, her mother and brother boarded a ship in Trieste in 1924. The young family landed in Halifax

weeks later and in another two weeks, after a dusty train ride across Canada, they stepped on West Kootenay soil for the first time - and joined her father who had immigrated to Trail three years earlier. “We never had presents at Christmas because that wasn't the thing to do in Italy,” recalled Bisaro. “Instead of celebrating the way we do here, January 6th, which is when the three wise men reach the stable, that was the big celebration.” The Epiphany in Italy, based on the story of the three kings (Magi or wise men) visiting Jesus in Bethlehem and offering gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, remains a public holiday in that country today. “The night before we would put out a wooden shoe on the window sill,” Bisaro explained. “And then in the morning we could hardly wait to get up because there would be an orange and a few chestnuts and walnuts left in it.” She remembers the tangy treat of an orange grown in Southern Italy, and how she and her brother would go out to the street to eat it.

YEAR IN REVIEW

Recreation issue comes to the forefront in communities The Trail Times presents its annual review of moments and news from 2014 beginning with January, February and March. January 1 – Approximately 150 people started off 23014 by taking the plunge into the Columbia River in the annual Polar Bear Swim at Gyro Park. 2 – Rylan Raymond Sousa, the son of Theresa and Nelson Sousa of Castlegar, was the first baby born at the Kootenay Boundary Regional hospital in 2014. 3 – Two boy scouts from Pullman, Wash., were rescued after heading spending the night on Grey Mountain. The duo skied into an out-of-bounds area and rescue attempts were curtailed by bad weather. The boys spent the night on the mountain and were rescued the following morning. It was the second case of lost skiers, a group of 10 were lost on Dec. 29, 2013, in two weeks since Red Resort opened Gray Mountain on Dec. 20, 2013. 9 – The region was handed its first substantial snowfall of the season 15cm falling. Nevertheless, it didn’t signal a major snow influx as levels remain below seasonal averages. 15 – The sewer dispute between Trail, Warfield and Rossland was finally settled after four years and thousands of dollars of legal bills. A revamped formula will see a decrease in cost for Trail and increases for Warfield and Rossland. 17 – Lead levels continue to decline in Greater Trail following the release of the latest results from the Trail Area Health and Environment Committee. 21 – Over 200 people were at the Fruitvale Memorial Hall for a community meeting on recrea-

The meeting was prompted by the end of the recreation agreement with the City of Trail, which doubled the cost for users to access facilities in Trail. 28 – Trail city council sticks with the plan to install gateway features at both ends of the Victoria St. corridor in downtown Trail. The council weighed another option, lighting the Victoria St. Bridge, but opted to put it on the backburner. 29 – The regional hospital board has earmarked $2 million to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital for upgrades in 2014, including an airborne isolation unit. February 4 – An investigation began at

Teck Trail Operations following a leak of a large volume of chemical solution into Trail’s domestic sewer system. Up to 25,000 litres of a sodium hydroxide solution was accidentally released into the domestic sewer system. 6 – A blast of Arctic air but the region in a deep freeze including a daily record low of -21.5 recorded by Environment Canada on Feb. 3. Red Mountain Resort recorded a temperature of -27 C at the top of Granite Mountain. 15 – The City of Trail officially took over the regional airport. Trail city reached a deal to purchase the regional service for $1.28 million from the Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, in a transaction to be completed in two payments of $640,000 over the next eight months. 17 – Trail City Council and the Trail and District Library were at odds over the funding for the facility during recent budget discussions. Despite increasing usage of the facility, the city allocated less funds in the 2014 budget. 18 – The much anticipated fire services review confirmed the regional service has a large area to cover and does to the best of its abilities in its current situation. However, the review failed to address any potential savings sought by the City of Rossland, which prompted the review. Rossland Mayor Greg Granstrom expressed concern that the review failed to offer any potential streamlining that could reduce the cost burden on

his city. 19 – Kootenay West MLA Katrine Conroy slammed the recent B.C. budget presented by the Liberals. Claiming it was full of “slogans and rhetoric,” Conroy said the was balanced on the “backs of working people,” while promising future windfalls on the long-waited LNG development. 23 – Cale Jack, 27, of Nelson dies in an avalanche while backcountry skiing near the summit of the Salmo-Creston pass. Jack and a local woman were caught in the slide. The woman was transported t0 the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail. 24 – Canadian music icon Bryan Adams thrills a sold out Charles Bailey Theatre with an acoustic performance featuring many of his greatest hits.

March 4 – Pacific Coastal announced it would not have a third daily flight landing at the Trail airport this year. Citing lack of capacity, the company, which began the extra flight in the summer of 2011, has opted to use a larger plane for one of flights out of Trail to accommodate passengers. 10 – School District 20 trustees have renamed Rossland Secondary School to Rossland Summit School. The name change was prompted after the district opted to reconfigure the school by adding elementary students and sending students in grades 10 to 12 to J.L. Crowe Secondary in Trail. 10 – The Trail voters will decide if the city can borrow money to build a new library/ museum building in downtown. Trail council agreed the future of the Trail Riverfront Centre will be decided by a referendum in November’s municipal election. 11 – Police are on alert after the third armed robbery in three weeks in the West Kootenay. The latest was the Kootenay Savings and Credit Union branch in Castlegar, the second KSCU branch to be robbed in three weeks. Descriptions of the suspect are similar to those in previous robberies although the police are not formally making a link. 17 – The Village of Warfield withdraws from its recreation deal with the City of Trail. The end of the agreement also ends the village’s support for the library services. The village instituted a reimbursement plan for its citizens who use the Trail facilities. 25 – Over 70 people packed the Warfield council chambers to voice their objections to the village’s withdrawal from the rec agreement with the City of Trail.

Thank you notes gratefully delivered for all presents FROM PAGE 1 The Bisaro family celebrations began with a tree that was plucked fresh from the area’s forest. The day was Christmas Eve, which truly marked their start to a holiday season full of homemade goodies and many laughs with family and friends. After midnight mass at St. Anthony’s Church, the family would return home for hot chocolate and platters of traditional Italian baking, before the boys were allowed to open one present. In the morning, the rest of the presents were opened while Bisaro, who still lives in the family’s West Trail home, sat with pen and paper to write down the gifts and who gave each one to the boys. “They had to write a thank you to everybody that gave them a present,” she said. “And they had to deliver it, if the person was local. It didn’t have to be a long note, just a short one to tell them personally what they thought.” Another Christmas tradition that the great grandmother misses,

Celebration extends into New Year FROM PAGE 1 “Everyone is Scotland learns these dances in school from age 4 and up,” she said. “So everyone just knows the dances, so you get a bit drunk and every just starts dancing.” While everyone is inside eating and dancing, outside, Edinburgh would be blanketed in snow more often than not and locals would put their money on it.

All regular Council and Committee of the Whole meetings begin at 6:30 pm and are open to the public. Special Council meetings may be scheduled at other times.

“The bookies would take bets to see if we were going to have a while Christmas or not,” she said. “You could gamble on it.” After Christmas is over, the celebrating doesn’t stop. In Scotland, New Year’s Eve is celebrated as Hogmanay and has a ceremony called first footing. “You have to go to your neighbours door and present them

with a gift, whether it is some whisky or a piece of food,” said Tod, laughing. “Then you keep going along (the road) until you get a big party, and then usually you bring instruments with you, so it turns into a big party.” Tod has had celebrations in Scotland, Australia and New Zealand, but this year, she will be spending the holiday season in Rossland.

is sitting beside her sons at the kitchen table, preparing 15 pounds of dark Christmas cake, and five pounds of white. “I found out after they were gone that we could so make much more with less stuff,” she laughed. “Because they really loved to taste.” But more than anything, Bisaro, who will turn 98 in May, said the custom of visiting family and friends every day until New Year’s Eve has her wishing she could go back in time. “Every single day we would go out visiting or have people visit us,” she said. “We would talk about nice things of all the people we knew and remember all our family. It was like you were back when everybody was still alive.” Although her family is spread all over the world, when they do return at Christmas, Bisaro says there is always daily visits around the Trail community to talk about the good times past. “It brings everything back again, because we don’t want to forget all these wonderful people that we knew.”

B.C.-only wines coming to some grocery stores City, union settle Nanaimo

on new contract By Tamara Cunningham Nanaimo News Bulletin

Nanaimo city employees will get a six-per cent pay hike over three years under a new collective agreement. Nanaimo city council and the Canadian Union of Public Employees ratified a new collective agreement Thursday, giving about 600 city employees a two-per cent annual pay increase over three years. The previous contract expired Dec. 31, 2013 and the two parties have been in negotiations since April. CUPE local 401 and the city recently hired a labour relations mediator to ratify the agreement, which will see employees get $570,000 in retroactive pay, as well as a two-per cent rate hike in 2015 and 2016. In the last year of the contract the pay hike will be split into two increases in January and July. There is also a new job evaluation plan and changes to benefits and allowances, including a $500 increase by the employer for maximum monthly long-term disability pay. Laurence Amy, first vice-president for CUPE Local 401, calls it a good deal with a “modest increase” and said the union and its members are happy.

By Jeff Nagel BC Local News

The province’s latest liquor reform will make it easier for wine stores to relocate into grocery stores – provided they offer only B.C. wines – but there’s no sign the government is rethinking its change to wholesale wine pricing that will sharply drive up the price of more expensive bottles. Friday’s announcement by Justice Minister Suzanne Anton in Langley at Chaberton Estate Winery is being hailed by B.C. wineries because some supermarkets that can begin selling wine come April will be barred from stocking foreign wines. Under the change, existing VQA and independent wine stores can relocate or transfer their licence to an eligible grocery store as long as 100 per cent B.C. wine is sold. Those licence transfers won’t be limited by a rule that disallows new outlets if there’s an existing one within one kilometre. Liquor policy reform leader John Yap called it a “winning combination” to allow grocery shoppers to also buy B.C. wine and support the local industry. “The B.C. wine industry is entering into a new era of winemaking,” added Chaberton co-owner

Eugene Kwan. The new model is different from the store-within-a-store model in that it allows B.C. wine to be on regular grocery store shelves and shoppers would pay for it at designated registers staffed by trained employees who are at least 19. Anton said a limited number of new licences – she would not specify how many – will be made available to sell just B.C. wine in grocery stores. The extra licences will mean more competition for private wine stores that have already been critical of some of the province’s liquor reforms. Vancouver lawyer Mark Hicken, who acts for the wine industry, predicts there will be “no takers” on wine stores relocating under the new B.C.only model because they would lose most of their international product lines. Hicken said the B.C.-only rule may violate Canada’s international trade agreements. A major concern for both wine stores and many B.C. restaurants is the change unveiled recently to the province’s wholesale pricing formula for wine that ends the discount advantage for independent wine stores. It may mean little change or even cheap-

er prices for wines that now cost $15 and under. But the final retail price of pricier bottles is expected to rise sharply come April, in both private and government stores, and in restaurants. Hicken has estimated wholesale prices in B.C. will rise 12 to 29 per cent on higher-end wines as a result of the change. He estimates a bottle that now retails for $30 will be priced at $33 to $40 under the new model, and the price hikes could be 25 to 50 per cent on the most expensive bottles that now go for $100 and up. BC Restaurant and Foodservice Association president Ian Tostenson said restaurants must pay retail prices and usually charge their patrons double, so the price of a nicer bottle when having dinner out will soar, putting more pressure on an already struggling service industry. He said restaurants are bracing for 10 to 20 per cent wine price increases on bottles over $17 or $18. Tostenson hopes the province will realize it has made an error and correct the wholesale pricing formula. “I think they’re going to do some adjustments,” he said. “This is supposed to be a revenue-neutral exercise. Government doesn’t want to be seen

to be putting prices up. So there seems to be a miscalculation somewhere.” In a statement emailed by her staff, Anton said the standardized wholesale price is to level the playing field for all liquor retailers and

enable more competition. “Trying to guess what each individual retailer will charge per product at this point is complete speculation,” she said, predicting consumers will see little if any change for most products.

Climate talks end 2014 in disarray

I

n case you missed the outcome of the latest United Nations climate change conference in Lima, Peru, it was another costly, embarrassing failure. This one is likely to be remembered mostly for a staggeringly stupid stunt by Greenpeace employees, who were threatened with prosecution for defacing the Nazca Lines, a world heritage site in the Peruvian desert. These vast 1,500-yearold petroglyphs, visible from space, are among the great mysteries of archaeology. “Time for a change!” blared huge yellow letters dragged across the sacred site by paid protesters trampling the delicate terrain. I’ll say it’s time for a change, starting with scratching Greenpeace off your Christmas card list. Earlier there was the spectacle of Canada’s national media, reflexively denouncing Ottawa’s supposed inaction on greenhouse gases after U.S.

President Barack Obama unveiled a surprise climate agreement with China in advance of Peru. “Over to you, Mr. Prime Minister,” chirped CBC anchor Wendy Mesley, joining other TV networks in falsely portraying the U.S. deal as a breakthrough. This non-binding gesture soon produced many cartoons, one of which shows Obama stripped to his underwear in a poker game with Chinese President Xi Jinping, who is surrounded by a pile of chips and an American flag. The U.S.-China announcement served as a preview of Peru, where developing countries would again refuse any substantive restrictions on their fuel use. China graciously agreed to continue ramping up its world-leading greenhouse gas emissions until 2030, while lame-duck Obama pretended he could commit the U.S. to further reductions.

TOM

FLETCHER B.C. Views

Between them, the U.S. and China account for about half of global human-caused carbon emissions. Due mostly to the surge from China and India, Canada’s share has fallen from two per cent to 1.5, which should help put all those “tar sands” protests into perspective. Days later, Environment Canada released its latest national emission statistics, an event ignored by most media. “Between 2005 and 2012, total Canadian GHG emissions decreased by 5.1 per cent, while the economy grew by 10.6 per

cent over the same period,” the report states. B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak joined the throngs who jetted to Lima. There she met officials from California and other U.S. states to re-announce their modest efforts to put a price on carbon emissions. TV anchors and other wideeyed innocents might have been left with the mistaken impression that the huge U.S. petroleum industry is cutting back, when in fact it has grown enormously thanks to shale oil and gas production. And California continues to produce, by its own state government measure, the most carbon-intensive heavy crude in North America. Overshadowing all of this is the drop in the world price of oil, mainly the result of Saudi Arabia flooding the market in an effort to push competitors out of business. In the latest sign of the U.S. public’s lack of

interest in reducing emissions, sales of larger vehicles immediately spiked up as gasoline prices fell. I’m still receiving criticism for a recent column in which I declared myself an “agnostic” on humancaused global warming. Agnostic means searcher, and my search has continued for real signs of climate change and its potential causes. Our glaciers are receding, no question, but the current trend started around the 1850s, when a sport utility vehicle had one horsepower in leather harness and B.C. was about to be declared a British colony. But amid the noise, there is serious evidence being put forward that our province is undergoing a climate shift with major consequences. And there are calls for action. I’ll discuss that next week. THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - “The Simpsons” is cross-pollinating with yet another show. For its upcoming season premiere, “Mythbusters” is rigorously testing how some “Simpsons” gags would play out in real life. “We looked through many, many, many different bits on ‘The Simpsons,’ but I think that we found stuff that really is entertaining and not totally outside the realm of physics’ co-host Adam Savage tells Entertainment Weekly. The “Mythbusters” team is testing whether a cherry bomb dropped in a toilet really could set off the plumbing across a whole school (as Bart did in an early episode), and whether a person could hang on to a wrecking ball and use their body as a shield to protect a house (a la Homer in the season 6 episode “Sideshow Bob Roberts”).

‘Walking Dead’ spin-off in the works The Canadian Press It’s been revealed the hotly anticipated “Walking Dead” spin-off will take place in Los Angeles. As reported by TVLine, the show isn’t expected to stray too far stylistically from the original series, but could be a prequel set in the early days of the zombie outbreak.

Have your voice heard on clawbacks

Every holiday season, it is great to see British Columbians take time to help others who struggle with getting basic necessities. This holiday season, not only can readers contribute to their local food banks and charities, but they can also send a message to our provincial government to end the child support clawback that takes millions out of the hands of BC’s poorest kids. Right now the provincial government is willing to hear from British Columbians on a policy that contributes to child poverty rather than alleviates it. Every month when a single parent, mostly mothers, receiving income assistance obeys the law and reports her child support payments from her ex, the government takes every dollar away saying she “hasn’t earned it.” Although the law says the money is the right of the child, it never gets to them because of the government. That means close to 6000 kids often go without basics like food, winter coats and boots, and school supplies even though the money is being put aside by a parent to prevent that. This holiday season while you are thinking of those less fortunate, take a moment to write to the government to let them know you want them to reduce child poverty starting with an end to the child support clawback. It’s time BC gave its poorest kids their money back. Send your email to both sdsifeedback@ gov.bc.ca and Michelle.Mungall.MLA@leg. bc.ca and make a difference in the lives of thousands of kids right here in our part of the world. Christmas part of heritage and religion

Happy Solstice, Mr. Allen (“More to celebrate than just Christmas,” Trail Times, Dec. 16). And joyful wishes to all my neighbours and friends, whether they celebrate Christmas, Hannukah, Solstice, Kwanzaa, or a secular gathering of their own tradition. Me, I celebrate Christmas, because that is both my culture and my faith. I don’t begrudge you your celebration; please allow me to celebrate mine. What “confusion” about a holiday observance of Christmas? Our culture is a product of our history, and the history of Canada, although multi-layered, is predominantly rooted by the British and French, both cultures having significant Christian influence. Government decision makers were in fact Christian, because until recently church on Sundays was the norm not the exception. Leaders based decisions on common social values which, since the time of Confederation, have been Christian. To have proclaimed the December holiday in honour of the Solstice would have amounted

to heresy! We also have Good Friday, Easter and Thanksgiving holidays– presumably you will say these are also products of bigoted Christian control. Fact is, our Canadian story has Christian roots, so the holiday is Christmas: however you choose to observe is up to you. I assure you it is not the designation of the December holiday that “has caused division, confusion, and the need to redefine what Christmas means.” Christmas has a culture of its own: flying reindeer and jolly elves, overblown consumerism, family reunions, snow, paid days off, mistletoe, magical snowmen, excess calories, twinkling lights. None of these are part of the Christian story, so can’t be blamed on what we name the holiday. But whether you celebrate a spiritual or a secular Christmas, or none at all, Christmas is a part of the Canadian culture and would be harder to eliminate than TimBits. Awhile back, my son in Grade 3 asked his teacher why they sang all the songs on the Christmas song-sheet

Tinpot terror wins the day

An editorial from the Toronto Star So what’s next on Kim Jong Un’s hit parade? Will North Korea’s Sagacious Leader be demanding the public flaying of Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park fame because they lampooned his dad as a cockroach in the puppet flick Team America: World Police? Or will the last Stalinist standing order Sony Pictures Entertainment to roll camera on a new action adventure starring himself as the Brilliant Young General who wins a nuclear war with the United States — or he’ll have everyone killed? When it comes to political blackmail the sky’s the limit for tinpot terror, now that Sony and North America’s major theatre chains have bowed to North Korean threats and com-

mercial sabotage and cancelled all plans to release the satirical comedy The Interview about an American plot to kill Kim. The Field Marshall, Brilliant Comrade, Supreme Leader, Shining Sun and all-round great guy can now add another title to his growing list: Scourge of Free Speech. Granted, this is a lot of fuss around an over-the-top American “action comedy” that depicts Kim, a real-life political leader, getting his head blown off by shrapnel when a shell strikes his helicopter as a Katy Perry tune, “Firework,” plays in the background. But to what extent are Americans — and Canadians — prepared to subordinate free speech and artistic expression to the whims of those who traffic in blackmail and terror? That’s the unsettling, undecid-

ed issue behind this fiasco. That Sony and the theatre chains backed down so abjectly speaks volumes about the obsession with terror that continues to haunt Americans 13 years after the Al Qaeda strikes. Sony executives should have known the film was bound to provoke outrage in North Korea. The prospect of having The Interview with its assassination theme smuggled into the Hermit Kingdom to be watched on video rattled the regime to the point where it complained to the United Nations, called the film “an act of war” and threatened a “resolute and merciless” riposte. Kim would have to be suicidal to attack U.S. cinema patrons. But Sony and the industry folded in the face of his bluff.

except for Silent Night, which was his favourite. The answer was that it might offend some people who didn’t believe in that part of Christmas. Well, I ask, what if I don’t believe in Rudolph? Or if I’m allergic to roast chestnuts? Will you leave those songs out, too? If some of us wish to

celebrate the coming of the Light of God into human darkness, why must I diminish my observance to prove I am tolerant of yours? It might surprise you to know, Mr. Allen, that the promise of warmth returning to end winter is an integral part of the Christmas mes-

sage. That’s why we celebrate Jesus’ birth at this time of year. You may have more in common with your Christian neighbours than you think. If “Merry Christmas” gets your back up, then I wish you the song of the angels: “Peace, goodwill to all.” Jennifer Sirges Trail

Silverbacks deal Smoke Eaters a playoff blow By Jim Bailey

Times Sports Editor

The Salmon Arm Silverbacks put the Trail Smoke Eaters playoff hopes in peril, winning both ends of a home-and-home series on the weekend. A 4-3 loss to the Silverbacks in Salmon Arm on Friday, and a 4-1 setback on Saturday has left the Smoke Eaters 14 points out of the fourth and final playoff spot in the Interior division heading into the Christmas break. While it is cause for concern, Trail assistant coach Barry Zanier believes there is still time to rally. “Going into those games it was like, ‘This is it, you need these games,’ but saying that I’ve seen funny things happen over the years. We need to go on a run and we need another team to have a bit of a fall, and that can happen. We’re definitely not throwing the towel in. Hopefully the guys come back re-energized and ready to go.” In Saturday’s match at the Cominco Arena in Trail, Josh Blanchard scored what proved to be the winning goal on the power play with four minutes remaining in the second period. After defenceman Ryan Swanson was sent off for tripping, the Backs worked the puck down low and Blanchard walked out of the corner and slipped the puck past Trail goalie Brett Clark to give Salmon Arm a 2-0 lead. Trail is without key forwards Dallas Calvin and Craig Martin, out with injury, as well as goaltender Adam Todd who is recovering from a blow to the head suffered last month against West Kelowna. Trail inserted Beaver Valley Nitehawk forward Ross Armour as an affiliate player. “They (Martin and Calvin) are two of the top six guys who are

The MinnesotaDuluth commit skated in, fake then deked, trying to go between the legs of the Smokie goalie, but Clark shut the door to keep the game locked at zeroes. Three minutes later, however,

the Silverbacks scored shorthanded when a bad turnover at the blue line sent Colton Thibeau and Brandon Wagner in on a 2-on-0. Thibeau broke down the right side and passed cross crease to Wagner who fired into the open side. “Shutting down the other team is key,” said Zanier. “At the start of the year, our goals against was pretty impressive then all of a sudden things started to go south. The main reason is our defensive play - not our defencemen but our team defense, and that’s the number one thing we have to change.” Scott Davidson would get the Smoke Eaters within one, scoring on a power play with just over a minute to play in the period. After a mad scramble, the Trail captain

notched his eighth goal of the season on a Harlan Orr centering pass from behind the net, wristing it by Zach Dyment in the Salmon Arm net to make it 2-1. Trail had their chances in the third period but couldn’t draw even, and Carson Bolduc and Blanchard scored late goals for Salmon Arm to ice it and win their 13th game of the season. Trail held the edge on shots, 11-6 in the period and 35-24 in the game, but goaltender Dyment repelled the Smokies attack earning first star in the match. Bolduc was named the game’s second star and Quinnipiac commit Davidson the third star for Trail. In Friday’s match, the Smoke Eaters were chasing the

Nitehawks forge comeback against Rebels By Times Staff The Beaver Valley Nitehawks came back from a 3-1 second period deficit to defeat the Castlegar Rebels 5-3 on Friday in Castlegar. The Hawks power play was firing on all cylinders as the Hawks scored four times including Taylor Stafford’s winner with 6:28 remaining in the third period to notch their seventh win in a row. Stafford took a pass through the slot from

Brayden Horcoff and beat Castlegar goalie Patrick Zubick to give the Hawks their 20th victory of the season and keep them in a tie for top spot in the Neil Murdoch division with the Nelson Leafs. The Hawks trailed 2-0 in the first despite outshooting the Rebels 16-10. Yannis Soukis and Ryan Rosich gave the Rebels a two-goal lead, until B.V. defenceman Lyle Frank replied at 11:46

of the second period on the power play to make it 2-1. Cal Owens restored the two goal lead for Castlegar, but Horcoff would make it 3-2 before the period was out. Tyler Hartman would tie it midway through the third with assists to Stafford and Ross Armour, before Stafford put the Hawks up for good. Spencer McLean added an empty netter as the Hawks outshot the Rebels 39-28 and went 4-for-8 on the power

play, while Castlegar went 2-for-7. Owens and Horcoff were named players of the game for Castlegar and B.V. respectively. The Nitehawks next home games go Dec. 29 and Dec. 30 against Castlegar and Nelson at 7 p.m. The Hawks are offering a $10 special ticket to see both games, and the Scotia Bank 50-50 draw will go at the Tuesday, Dec. 30 game.

Silverbacks all night but could not find the equalizer late in the game, falling 4-3 in Salmon Arm. The Backs took a 3-1 lead in the second period on goals from Blanchard, Andrew Farny, and Ross Heidt, while Swanson replied for Trail. Cooper Leitch would get the Smokies within one late in the second, but a Taro Hirose goal 4:37 into the third restored the two-goal lead. Orr would again draw the Smokies within one at 14:54, finishing a setup from Basilico, but Backs goalie Angus Redmond shut the door in the last five minutes to secure the win. Salmon Arm outshot the Smokies 41-36 and went 1-for-2 on the power play while Trail was 2-for-3. Hirose and Blanchard were named the games first and second stars while Swanson picked up third-star honours for Trail. The weekend losses put the Smokies eight points back of fifth place Salmon Arm in the Interior division and is Trail’s ninth loss in a row. The slump has seriously hurt the team’s chances for a post-season berth and Zanier says the coaching staff will likely review their systems and consider changes over the break. “I think we need to tweak some things. We can’t just continue doing the same things . . . So maybe we need to change some systems and different focuses. For us to continue exactly what we’re doing makes no sense at all. Hopefully things will change a little bit in the New Year.” The Smoke Eaters next home game goes Sunday versus West Kelowna. Game time is 5 p.m. The lucky winner of the $30,000, 50/50 raffle will be drawn at the game between the second and third period.

Brown wins second session

By Times Contributor The second session of the Trail Retirees Curling wrapped up last week coinciding with the start of the holiday break. To celebrate, all five players on a team curl, then enjoy a lunch and a draw to the button for a turkey. With the skips sitting off the first end, team Ernie Brown jumped out to a commanding 6-0 lead. Tom Hall’s rink fought back but could not overcome the first end meltdown as team Brown prevailed 10–7. Team Pat Fennell faced team Harvey Handley in a low scoring game till the sixth end when team Handley scored three and jumped out to a 5-3 lead. See COLEMAN, Page 12

seven ends in a well-played game by both sides. In the last end Primo had hammer, facing three Rakuson counters, he was left with a hit and roll. Primo’s shot rubbed a guard and slid through the house, giving Rakuson the 8–5 win. Jim Stewart’s five-some was locked in a battle with team Serge Pasquali. Tied after four ends team Stewart broke the game open with five in the fifth on their way to a 10–6 victory. Team Dan Horan fell behind early to a hot shooting team Murray Walsh. Leading 6-0 after three ends team Walsh kept the remaining ends simple and traded singles through seven ends. Down by six, team Horan was run out of rocks in the eighth, giving Walsh the 8–2 win. Congratulations to Team Ernie Brown for winning the second section. Since Ernie won the first section Ernie will skip that team in the finals. The second place skip, Clare Coleman, will skip the second section winners.

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - From the extraordinary Maggie Gyllenhaal-starring miniseries “The Honorable Woman” on SundanceTV to Syfy’s goofy “Sharknado 2: The Second One,” TV delivered in 2014 - streaming, on cable and over the air. Showtime’s “Homeland” roared back from last year’s muddle with a season of white-knuckle suspense. CBS’ “The Good Wife” killed off a main character to give the show its latest burst of life. FX’s “Sons of Anarchy” ended its seven-season run with explosive closure. AMC’s “Mad Men” teed up satisfyingly for its final round in 2015. Showtime’s “The Affair” gave fair warning against cheating on your spouse, while making such a misdeed seem irresistible. And ABC’s “Scandal” was wackier than ever. Consider them winning programs, one and all. But here are a trio that get a special nod: - “black-ish” (ABC). The diversity of life is celebrated within the seeming confines of an upscale African-American family whose patriarch is determined to uphold a sense of cultural identity for his four kids. Starring Anthony Anderson and Tracee Ellis Ross as his far-less-fretful wife, it’s a smart comedy that addresses race, culture and class with a colorblind brand of relatability plus plenty of laughs. - “Gotham” (Fox). The comic book crowd can embrace it as an “origin” series about the lad who would grow up to become Batman. Fans of noir thrillers can savour the sleek storytelling and brooding stylishness. “Gotham” has everything: larger-than-life characters completely at home in the free-floating world of this crime-ridden city. A terrific cast (led by Ben McKenzie and Donal Logue) that plays the twisted narrative completely straight. And gorgeous production values. Were it on premium cable, this broadcastnetwork series would be worth the price. - “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” (NBC). What mattered when Jimmy Fallon took over from Jay Leno (and “The Tonight Show” returned to Manhattan after four decades) was this: Fallon just kept doing what he’d done so successfully as host of NBC’s “Late Night” - just bigger and better on this grander stage. He remained funny, gracious, bubbly and muchassured. Instantly “The Tonight Show” became, in effect, “The Jimmy Fallon Show.”

A few flops, departures and finales in 2014

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Along with its triumphs, the world of TV had its share of setbacks in 2014. Here’s a sample: - “How I Met Your Mother” Concludes: This long-running CBS sitcom met few viewers’ expectations for a slam-bang finish. Its big reveal - naming the titular “your mother” after nine years of teasing - yielded a finale only slightly less tangled than the ending of “Lost.” And even “Lost” resisted the temptation to include a blue French horn in its wrap-up. - David Gregory Exits “Meet the Press”: After months of speculation that Gregory was being ousted from the program he had hosted since 2008, NBC News announced in August he was toast. That was 18 months after the network signed him to a new contract it described as “a long-term commitment.” And four months after NBC News’ president defended him in a memo to “Meet the Press” staff expressing support “for David, now and into the future.” His future was short-lived. - Ray Rice’s Elevator Assault: Over and over, viewers were force-fed the chilling video of Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice striking his then-fiancee and knocking her out. After it was released on a Monday in September, the video of Janay Palmer crumpling to the elevator floor was aired repeatedly by multiple networks. In one particular hour, the clip aired 37 times on ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel and MSNBC. But by Thursday, many of those networks vowed to give it a rest. - “Utopia” Unrealized: Arriving with much fanfare, this Fox reality show stranded a group of strangers at a remote site where, during the year to follow, they were meant to build a more perfect society. But it turned out they couldn’t even build a show that viewers would watch. Puny ratings forced its cancellation after just two months. For Fox (and the human race) “Utopia” swiftly proved to be a dream unfulfilled. - “Peter Pan Live!” It proposed a bold countertheory for the space-time continuum. It argued for eternal youth in a realm only accessible by fairy dust-assisted human flight. Unfortunately, NBC’s live production of this time-honoured musical never managed to take off. Viewers had the feeling they had grown up and grown old by the end of its three hours struggling to get off the ground.

Sister’s guilt manifests as lies and avoidance Mailbox

get-togethers. Is this any way to treat the people who kept you from being thrown out on the street? We have never hounded them for the money, but I know now this was a big mistake. We must have had “sucker” written on our foreheads. I am extremely hurt that my sister would do this to me. It’s not even the money anymore. It’s being lied to repeatedly by someone I loved and trusted. An apology might help, but I don’t see it happening. What do I do? -- Extremely Disappointed Dear Disappointed: If your sister knew how to be more frugal, she

retired, but can’t find a moment to stop by my place or even ask how his grandchildren are. But he somehow manages to visit my brother’s kids. I’ve called him on this, and he says he’s not well enough to come to my place, but every day he stops by the donut shop that’s two minutes from my home. I’ve never asked them for anything and don’t expect anything. However, my brother’s children are the apples of their eyes. Why does he keep asking me to visit when he doesn’t want to see me? -Can’t Be Bothered and Don’t Care Dear Can’t: Where is Mom in all this? It sounds as though Dad wants to see you, but has no idea how to relate to you. If you know when he is at the donut shop, feel free to stop by. And if you are willing to put in the effort, family counseling might help all of you communicate bet-

ter. Dear Annie: I was sympathetic to “Trying My Best,” the guest who is allergic to cats. We, too, have a relative who cannot visit our home due to his severe allergies to our cats and a dear friend who can visit for a meal, but

cannot tolerate longer periods of time in our home. We follow the procedures outlined in this letter when our friend visits, and we host our relative at a restaurant. But other guests don’t seem to understand that the

cats aren’t temporary visitors. This is their home, and they are part of our family. And in some cases we like the cats a lot more than we like the guests. -- Jim Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar.

wouldn’t have needed your loan. Her lies and avoidance are how she deals with her guilt. We suggest you remove all vagueness about this. Have a lawyer draw up papers with the amount loaned, the amount repaid and a schedule of monthly payments. Insist that all of you sign it, and then remind her when she’s late with a payment. Be nice, but firm. She won’t like it, but once the loan is repaid, you can start with a clean slate. Dear Annie: My dad constantly calls me at work to ask when I’m going to come over to see Mom and my adult sister who still lives at home. But when I do make the time to visit, he can’t be bothered to talk to my husband, my kids or me, and my sister doesn’t bother to come up from the basement. This has been going on for the past 20 years. I no longer feel welcome there. My dad is

Dear Annie: Two years ago, my sister called crying that they were going to lose their house. She didn’t realize her husband hadn’t been making the mortgage payments. She said she wouldn’t have taken all those vacations or eaten out in fancy restaurants if she had known they couldn’t afford it. Of course I jumped in to help. My husband spent a day making sure all the money was transferred into the right accounts in time to stop the bank auction. This was a loan, not a gift, but without interest charges. Now I feel betrayed. My sister and her husband continue to spend money frivolously. They took a big vacation and lied to me so I wouldn’t know. They’ve been eating out again. They promise to make payments, but rarely do. Any amount is overdue and in tiny increments. Now they’ve stopped inviting us to

Quite possibly, someone will say something that upsets you. Don’t quit your day job. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Travel plans will be cancelled, delayed or rescheduled today. Glenmerry Elementary School's grades 6 and 7 students in Mr. Page's class fundraised money through Christmas carolling in the community, and donated a portion of the funds to Kate's Kitchen. Additionally, in conjunction with Retriev Technologies, all Glenmerry students participated in a two-week food drive while Retriev pledged to match every pound of food donated with one dollar. In total, the school brought in 1077.5 lbs of dry goods. The Salvation Army picked up the food Thursday morning along with the cheque from Retriev.

Each year the Rossland Fire Fighters bring Christmas Hampers to needy families in Rossland. This is a tradition that has been going on for over 20 years. The Rossland Firefighters would like to thank community groups and businesses for contributing to the hampers. Future applications for Christmas Hampers may be picked up at the Rossland Fire Hall, Trail Fire Hall and the Rossland Food Bank.
