You wouldn’t know it by the melting snow around town, but the winter season is upon us and backcountry skiers, boarders and snowmobilers have begun to venture into the wilderness around Golden. With that in mind, it’s timely to take a look at mountain safety and the precautions that need to be taken when venturing into the backcountry. According to Jordan Peterson, president of Golden and District Search and Rescue, the most important step, not surprisingly, is to be prepared, and know what kind of terrain you’re getting into.

“Whether that’s with non-functioning equipment, not the proper equipment or limited knowledge of the area that they are travelling in. Generally those are the biggest mistakes,” Peterson said. “We also see a lot of people get into terrain that’s well past their skill level.” Proper education can go a long way towards keeping you safe as well, and Peterson recommends getting some avalanche training, at the very least, before setting out. Equipment has evolved in recent years, but it’s important to know that help is not always as immediate as it might seem, according to GADSAR’s Shauna Speers. Continued on page 5

Mike Symons has lived in such varied places as China and on the Island, but he’s always had designs of living somewhere else. “I feel like I got spoiled growing up on the Island, but I’ve always wanted to come and live in the mountains and the Rockies specifically,” he said. Symons has worked with teenagers and young adults for a good portion of his working life, including a stint in China as an ESL teacher. Now as Golden’s new Youth Centre Coordinator (through Golden Community Resources Society) and Men’s Services Program Assistant & Teen Group Facilitator (through the Golden Family Centre), Symons hopes he can bring his extensive experience to these programs. There are many reasons Symons enjoys working with youth, but one that really stands out. “I like youth energy,” he said. “I like the challenge of it…I’m kind of a large teen

myself.” Having been here for a few weeks, Symons has already started to get to know some of the youth who frequent the centre. “They’ve got all sorts of neat artistic talents and some of them are some of the funniest people I’ve ever met, they’re super clever,” he said. He also hopes to draw in more international students living in Golden, of which only a few frequent the youth centre at the moment. As for his work with the family centre, Symons has helped develop a survey to better define the men’s support services that exist in Golden. The goal of the survey is to discover which services are being used and which ones are missing from the community. (For more information on the survey, see page 12.) Symons has a certain idea of what his men’s group will look like, but also stressed that the program will depend on the makeup of the group. “The group kind of seeks to (establish) how we define

Photo Submitted masculinity, so we’ll hopefully be able to have speakers come in but it depends what the group looks like. It’s going to be specific to what kind of members we can attract and where there is a need,” Symons said. Males aged 19-99 are welcome to join the group once it begins (likely in the new year).

“No centenarians,” Symons joked. “But we’ll see if we can make some exceptions.” Anyone who wishes to meet Symons is welcome to drop by and talk to him on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays in his office at the Youth Centre from noon onwards. “If the Christmas lights are on, I’m in that space,” he said.

Blame the Road Maintenance I exchanged Tweets last week with a commercial truck driver who was less than impressed with the winter maintenance of BC’s highways. There is no doubt in my mind that when your livelihood depends on being able to keep your truck moving road maintenance is a subject near and dear to your heart. My question is, was this gentleman speaking from emotion or was he being realistic? If money was no object, we could hire enough people and equipment that snow removal vehicles would pass by you on any highway in BC like transit buses in downtown Vancouver at rush hour. This is not realistic of course. Our taxes would not support it and what would you do with all that manpower and machinery when the snow wasn’t falling? When I travel in winter, part of the plan includes the decision on whether it is appropriate to travel at all. If it is, and I run into an unforeseen situation, it’s up to me to have some stake in being able to look after myself. Good winter tires, chains, jumper cables, a shovel, some sand, breakdown warnings, you get the idea. I cannot and should not place 100% of the job on the shoulders of the road maintenance contractors. Yes, sometimes road maintenance is not ideal. People get sick and can’t come to work, equipment breaks down and Mother Nature just dumps more snow out of the sky than even the best can cope with. It’s all a compromise and in my experience the crews seem to do quite well more often than not. Enough that I am still procrastinating about buying the set of chains for my truck that I swore I would by after getting stuck on an unploughed road a couple of years ago. Simon Fraser hosts CED course Joel Tansey reporter@thegoldenstar.net Community members, local leaders and municipal politicians had an excellent opportunity to participate in the second Simon Fraser University Community Economic Development (CED) course to be hosted in Golden. The first session of study occurred in June of 2013, and the follow up courses were brought back this year due to popular demand, with topics ranging from Indigenomics, Leadership and Social Innovation highlighting the Dec. 1-5 course. Lori Baxendale and Joy Orr were among the attendees, and both agreed it was a very positive experience. “It was a great opportunity to learn, but also to spend time with current and emerging community leaders,” said Orr through an e-mail. Indigenomics, a look at aboriginal principals and how they can be applied in today’s society, was one of the more interesting topics over the five day event. “(Indigenomics) is very much a sense of shared wealth. (The idea) is that success is not defined by the accumulation

Photo Submitted of wealth but in the sharing of wealth and that the most successful people are those who can share,” Baxendale said. Another idea that individuals at the seminar explored was the concept of a “leakage assessment” and how leakage can affect a community like Golden. “How is money leaving your community, what are your assets locally, and what kind of businesses can be built around money that is leaving and the assets that you have?” Baxendale said. She used the example of the Whitetooth Brewing Company as a way to prevent that kind of leakage. Currently, bars and restaurants in Golden serve a variety of beer from other com-

munities such as Fernie and Revelstoke, but the creation of Golden’s own brewery will prevent some of that leakage. “Now we’re going to have a local brewery here and that money is going to stay in the community,” Baxendale explained. Orr was particularly excited for Golden’s future after attending. “Golden has very talented citizens, and if we work together we can accomplish tremendous things,” she said. The final step, for those who participated in both the 2013 and 2014 sessions, will be to travel to Vancouver in May to complete their certificates.

Volunteers needed for Xmas Bird Count BC seeking advisors Jessica Schwitek editor@thegoldenstar.net On Dec. 27 Golden residents have the opportunity to be part of the largest, longest-running animal census on the planet. Beginning in 1900, The Christmas Bird Count, as it is now called, is conducted in over 2000 localities across Canada, the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. These bird observations have been amassed into a huge database that reflects the distribution and numbers of winter birds over time. Christmas Bird Counts are conducted on any oneday between December 14 and January 5 inclusive. They are carried out within a 24-km diameter circle that stays the same from year to year. As well as adding an exciting and fun event to the holiday season, the Christmas Bird Count provides important information for bird conservation. Data from the Count was used in assessment reports that added Western Screech-Owl, Rusty Blackbird, and Newfoundland Red Crossbill to the Species at Risk Act lists, and the general database was used extensively in the recent State of Canada’s Birds report. This will be the 25th year that Golden has participated in the count. “We are looking for participants of any and all skill levels in bird identification, so tell you friends,” said organizer Ellen Zimmermann. There are several ways to participate, including going along with an experienced birder to help record, covering a specifically allocated territory on your own or with family and friends, or even watching and

Do you want to help shape the provincial government’s policy’s on rural British Columbia?These policies could have a tremendous affect of Golden, so the Province is putting together an advisory council that will represent every region in B.C. Applications to participate in the province’s Rural Advisory Council are now being accepted until Jan. 9, 2015. The council’s mandate is to provide independent and impartial advice to government on matters related to rural development. As committed to in the report, Supporting Rural Development: Creating a Voice for Rural British Columbia, the initial focus of the council will be to provide advice on: * Avenues to support greater rural access to capital; * Stronger business development support for rural entrepreneurs and businesses; and * Moving forward on the Rural Dividend. Government is inviting individual British Columbians to apply for council membership by submitting a resume and cover letter, identifying relevant business, economic development and community experience, and expressing their personal vision for supporting rural economies. The council will include 10 to 18 members, representing a diversity of backgrounds, perspectives and regions. New Act tackles regional ‘price gaps’ Golden Star Staff reporter@thegoldenstar.net Golden residents often see higher consumer prices, most notably for gasoline, purely because of the geographic location. Now, after new legislation introduced by the Federal Conservatives, tools will be in place to investigate the “price gap,” The legislation was brought forward primarily to tackle price discrimination between Canadian and U.S. prices, but does not exclude price gaps between Canadian regions. “The unexplained and often significant price gap between Canadian and U.S. prices for the same products is a frustrating and all too familiar reality for any Canadian who has ever shopped online or travelled to the United States,” said Conservative MP, and Golden’s federal representative David Wilks. Industry Minister James Moore announced new legislation to help ensure Canadians are not charged higher prices than Americans simply because of where they live. The Price Transparency Act will help tackle the practice of geographic price discrimination, one of the key contributors to the Canada-U.S. Price Gap. The legislation provides the Competition Commissioner with the tools necessary to investigate alleged cases of price discrimination and publicly report to Canadians situations where consumers are unfairly targeted with higher prices. The Commissioner will be authorized to seek court orders to compel the production of evidence to expose discriminatory pricing practices that are not justified by higher costs in Canada, and to publicly report to consumers on the findings.

Rainy weather could create issues Continued from page 1 “I think there’s this notion that help is coming and help is coming quickly,” Speers said. “We often get comments from people that say ‘Gosh, we pushed our spot beacon hours ago’.” As Speers explains, there can be a delay between spot beacon activation and the time where the message actually is actually received by GADSAR. “A notion that is probably out there is that a lot of backcountry rescue is professionals…I think a lot of people don’t realize that the people who are coming for you are volunteers.” “If we’re to you in a couple hours, we’re doing

really well.” While much of last week’s rain in town was snow at alpine levels, the potential remains for it to cause issues throughout the season. “Depending on weather factors in the future the rain could cause future persistent weak layers. It just really depends how future layers bond but there definitely could be cause for concern. It’s definitely a layer that people travelling in the backcountry should keep in the back of their mind, or even in the forefront of their mind,” Peterson said. We do not need a death or more damage to get action from all levels of government so I urge you all to get your town council behind a movement to activate the provincial and federal government.

This is quite often not the case, and I find myself struggling every week to fill the opinion pages. We love to hear from you, and whether - I SURMISE you are happy, or disBy Jessica Schwitek appointed about something in the newspaper or within the community, write in and let us know. You never know how many other people in Golden are thinking the exact same thing, and often appreciate it when they see a like-minded opinion published in the paper. If you didn’t know, Letters to the Editor and Stars and Stingers are free of charge. And the more we get the better. We have decided to implement a new policy at the Golden Star that we will not publish any letters that do not directly affect or involve Golden. If we don’t receive any local letters, that means that we will have to fill the page with our own opinions. So if you’re tired of hearing from us, write in. The Golden Star has been part of this community since 1891. It is your newspaper, and ideally will reflect the diverse opinions that make Golden so interesting. But the only way for it to truly reflect the community, the community must be involved. Page 6 belongs to you, and as long as letters are not libelous (making unproven accusations towards an individual or organization), or are advertising, they will be printed. Last week I wrote an editorial that I knew would not be well received by everyone around town. The response I have received has been mixed, about fifty/fifty, some agreeing and some adamantly disagreeing. Either way, I was thrilled to hear the feedback. Everyone who spoke to me was very clear and respectful. And even though not all of them wanted to put their names forward with a Letter to the Editor, I still appreciated all of the discourse. It showed me that people here really do care about this town, and pay attention to what goes on around here. So if there’s anything you care about, we’d love to hear about it. Our Rivers Editor, Years back the Kicking Horse River fanned the entire area where Golden is now situated. The town is built on this flood plain and as a result of this we channelled and diked the river. The flow of gravel down the Kicking Horse will never stop short of a dam. In the ‘70s the Conservation Officers would allow gravel extraction but never allow work in running water, and never allow leaving big holes or banks and the area was contoured to blend with the on-site area. These rules were strictly enforced. MLAs, MPs, and Town Council with interested groups must lobby Federal Fisheries to obtain permission for a river maintenance plan which will consistently allow for gravel, boulder and silt extraction in the river. We can beautify the dykes but we cannot keep raising them. If we do, we will be raising the three bridges. “The gravel consists of larger rocks above Gould’s

Island, very good road base gravel form the island on to the railway bridge and silty fill material at the confluence. This silt at the mouth of the Kicking Horse River was bulldozed up but never hauled away. This material should have been placed in low lying areas. The gravel bars above the railway bridge should be lowered and the product stockpiled for road work. There is some larger rock at the top end of Gould’s Island that should be carefully removed to allow the river to enter the overflow channel sooner, taking the pressure off the north side. This product can be used as Well rock, Gabion rock or crushed.” If the above is carried out we would have less pressure on the dike, giving the citizens of Golden a comfort zone. Our river system is very unique and we must have a strong lobbying team to convince fisheries of this solution. With today’s equipment and our knowledge of the fish habitat there is no reason we cannot have a plan that will benefit Golden and not harm the habitat or the beauty of our beautiful river system. Well, that was another close one. In the recent ice event, there were impacts to many people, but it could have been much worse. Mother Nature has been kind to us again but she is not always so, as we read in Colleen Palumbo’s article last week. Over the next couple of months, we continue to be at risk, especially if there is another stretch of cold weather. This could result in a second major ice flow which could end with overbank flows in Golden and threaten the Highway 95 Bridge. As the Town of Golden, we are in a very challenging position; the Kicking Horse River ‘belongs’ to the Province, but we have been designated as the ‘Diking Authority’. Continued on page 7

Area A Report: Communication is open MLA Report: Public roads To All Area A Residents; On Dec. 4, I travelled to Salmon Arm to the CSRD offices to be sworn in as your Area A Director. It is a tremendous honour and exciting time in my life. It was a pleasure meeting all the good folks at the CSRD. What a wonderful resource available to me as I learn about all the great work that has been done for our region to date. In my first days as your Director there is much to learn and much to be done. Of the greatest importance is to set up how we will be com-

municating together. During the campaign, I talked about creating an advisory committee that would have representation from all Area A neighbourhoods, be gender and age balanced and would have the experience and skills set we need to move our community forward. To that end, I am currently working with the CSRD staff to move the advisory committee process forward. In the coming weeks you will be reading information in the Golden Star and on the Area A Director Facebook site

There have been ice events and high freshet flows in the past, and they will continue into the future. We also know that the river isn’t the same as it was 80 – 100 years ago. The Kicking Horse River has been diked and gravel has been removed or pushed around since 1917. My office has been receiving many calls, emails and letters from constituents who are very unsatisfied with the state of our public roads. For those of us who travel the Trans Canada Highway on a regular basis, we can’t help but be reminded that the BC Liberals have failed once again to keep their promises. In the lead up to the 2009 and the 2013 elections, the BC Liberals made great claims that the 4 laning of the Trans Canada would be completed, but the truth of the matter is that - Norm Macdonald little is being done to complete the pro- MLA Columbia River-Revelstoke ject; there is no significant funding allocated in the budget for at least the next 3 years. This is simply not acceptable. The safety of residents and visitors is put in jeopardy because the BC Liberals have failed in their commitment to complete the necessary work on our highway. But it isn’t just infrastructure that is raising concerns with constituents. Standards for road maintenance are also getting a failing grade. While government and road maintenance contractors say that they are meeting the standard that has been set, the people who rely on these roads say the standard isn’t high enough. Weather events certainly provide a challenge for road crews, but bad weather in this area is entirely predictable. Residents have no choice but to travel, and road maintenance standards must ensure that people can do that safely. Staying home from school, not going into work and missing needed medical appointments is not an option. Treacherous driving conditions are the direct result of cuts to resources, and people in this area are saying that the increased danger is too high a price to pay. My job is to take your concerns to the government. My job is to ensure the minister understands the full consequences of the government’s actions. And my job is to tell your stories. Your Recycling Depot is changing January 1st. FAQ WHY: The Province of BC has shifted the responsibility of recycling Packaging and Printed Paper (PPP) to industry (Multi Material BC or MMBC). HOW: The CSRD has partnered with MMBC to manage recycling at the depots. MMBC requires depots to be staffed, secured after hours and sort recycling into 6 categories. MMBC: Multi Material BC (MMBC) is a non-profit organization that is fully financed by industry to manage residential Packaging and Printed Paper recycling programs in BC, either directly or by working with local governments, First Nations, private companies, and other non profit organizations. WHO: MMBC provides collection for residential recycling. Commercially generated recycling must be handled separately. Depot Recycling: Operated by the CSRD, accepting separated materials listed in Categories 1 through 6. Curbside Recycling: Operated by the Town of Golden, accepting Category 1 and 2 mixed recyclables in blue carts (no sorting required).

Solid Waste Management Plan The CSRD has been working with a consulting firm to review and update the Solid Waste Management Plan. The Plan is used to guide the CSRD's waste reduction strategies, recycling goals and diversion programs. Part of the review process is consulting the public, which is now complete. An online survey was used for 11 weeks from September to November. 423 respondents completed the survey. In addition, 62 individuals attended 7 open houses from Golden to Scotch Creek. The CSRD is hoping to present to the Board in February the updated Plan.

Nicholson has been a buzz with the Christmas spirit as students and staff prepared for the Christmas concert under the direction of Mrs. Calladine. Decorations, costumes, music and lines were the focus for the last two weeks all culminating in a VERY SUCCESSFUL Christmas concert. Thank you to the staff for all their hard work and to the Nicholson School community for your attendance and support. Nicholson also held its annual Christmas letter writing day. We had great parent attendance as they helped their children write letters to family and friends who they might not see over the holidays. When all the work was done, many stayed to

enjoy a family soup day lunch put on by the PAC. Healthy living and physical fitness is a big focus for the students at Nicholson. The Grade 5/6/7 class headed off to Edgewater to challenge their school to a set of volleyball games. The students showed great school spirit. SQ Danza spent two afternoons working on dance moves with the entire school. Students were divided into groups and then came together at the end to put on a performance for their parents. Thank you to all the parents who came to watch. The students are now counting down the days till Christmas holidays. The staff and students at Nicholson would like to wish the Nicholson and Golden community a very Merry Christmas and all the best in 2015! Thank you for your continued support.

Seven games into their 20142015 season, Golden Secondary’s senior boys’ basketball team remains a perfect 7-0. The recent victims of the Eagles’ ever-sharpening talons? A trio of Alberta schools at the Canmore Rocky Mountain Classic. Golden took out Highwood (out of High River) and George MacDougall (Airdrie) before taking on the #2 ranked AAA team in Alberta, Cochrane High in the championship round. Despite Cochrane being a division higher than Golden (as a larger school) the Eagles dominated throughout, taking a 29-16 lead after the first quarter and never looking back. Saje Gosal poured in a teamhigh 26 points while Josh Hiraoka and Kiran Gosal contributed 17 apiece and Neal Randhawa added 14. Last season, the Eagles relied heavily on the scoring prowess of Gosal and Randhawa. The fact that the Eagles dynamic duo pitched in less than half of the team’s total points is a telling sign with regards to the club’s depth. “The final game is really representative of what happened throughout the tournament,” said head coach Kindy Gosal of the team’s supporting cast.

“We don’t have to have individual Herculean efforts in order to score.” Among the players who are coming on strong in supporting roles are Grade 9 John Oszust and second year big man Gage Chernoff. Oszust has had a smooth transition in his first year of senior basketball, and pitched in six points in the team’s championship final victory. “The transition has been smoother than I expected thanks to the coaching staff and all the players on the team helping me improve as a player and as a person,” Oszust said. For Gage, an imposing figure as the tallest Eagles player, it’s all about his comfort level now that he’s in his second season. “Last year I was still learning the sport and I was really out of shape at the start of the season. Since then I’ve come quite far with physical fitness and learning the game and I’m really excited for the rest of the season,” Chernoff said. The Eagles players felt the support from parents that made the two hour trip east for the tournament and continue to be thankful for the support from the community as a whole. Golden will have one more tournament before breaking for the holidays, next weekend in Airdrie.

Golden Light Horse Club wraps up their season with awards Golden Light Horse Club Submitted Another fun filled and exciting year of the Golden Light Horse Club wrapped up last week at the AGM and awards night event. The club had a very successful year hosting our 2nd Annual Delbert Johnson Memorial Jackpot Barrel Race which brought out competitors from around the province to a fantastic weekend of sunshine and fast horses. We also hosted a clinic with Ron Watson in the spring, had our monthly Fun Day Gymkhana events, some social gatherings, a group trail ride and topped all of this off with an awesome day in Brisco competing for the Golden/Brisco Challenge Cup. The Golden Light Horse club hosts allages, family friendly events that promote fun competition in a safe environment for all horse enthusiasts. This year we are especially proud of our kids' improvement in their horsemanship skills and overall control in the ring, which reflects their blos-

soming partnerships with their ponies and horses. Our Fun Days are open events and we invite you to join us at the Rodeo Grounds in the spring to laugh with the kids, laugh at the adults, pick the prettiest horse, and enjoy a delicious burger at our concession! Christmas gifts have changed a great deal over the past century

I can’t say that toys has always been the first choice for kids, in fact I remember with delight the year that my Grandma Cuffling knit me mitts with a matching scarf. But everyone has a different idea about what the perfect childhood toy was. I remember my mom saying that when she was a child Dale

Evans and Roy Rogers where huge and everybody she knew wanted something that had to do with Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. When I asked my husband what he wanted as a child he said a black board. All I ever really wanted was a dump truck and I asked for it three years in a row, finally the year I gave up I got it. Of course by then I was twelve and really wasn’t that interested in a dump truck anymore. So, what are some of the most popular toys of the last 100 years, keeping in mind that not all of these toys were created for a Christmas market. 1900 – 1910. In the more recent history Crayola Crayons were introduced to the market place in 1903. The average American child spends 28 minutes a day coloring and wears down about 730 crayons by the age of 10. Parents

and schools purchase 2.5 billion crayons each year. Other toys that were introduced during that time were: Ford Die Cast Cars (1906), the Teddy Bear (1903), and Lionel Trains (1900). 1910-1919. Erector sets were introduced in 1913, the same year as Tinker Toys. In 1916 the markets saw Lincoln Logs. Lincoln Logs were invented by John Lloyd Wright, the son of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright was inspired by the way that his father designed the earthquake-proof Imperial Hotel in Tokyo. But probably the most popular toy that came onto the market during that time period was Raggedy Anne Dolls. 1920-1929. The View Master 3-D viewer with its little round discs filled with images. To date more than one billion View Masters have been sold. 1940-1949. During this time period we were introduced to Tonka Trucks (1947), Magic 8 Ball (1947), Scrabble (1948), Slinky (1948), and Clue (1949). Last week I read a note that said Slinky was one of those things that really has no use but it makes you grin when you push it down the stairs. More

than 100 million sets of Scrabble have been sold worldwide. 1950-1959. Silly Putty (1950), LEGO Building Sets (1953), Matchbox Cars (1954), PlayDoh (1956), Yahtzee (1956), Frisbee (1957), Hula Hoop (1958), Barbie (1959). And last but certainly not least was Mr. Potato Head. Did you know that originally Mr. Potato Head was just the parts and that you had to supply a real potato? 1960-1969. During this time period we were introduced to Etch-a-Sketch (1960), Game Of Life (1960), Troll Dolls (1961), Easy Bake Oven (1963), Operation (1965), Twister (1966), Battleship (1967), Lite Brite (1967), Hot Wheels (1968) and G.I. Joe (1964). All of these toys are still doing well on the market today. 1970-1979. Nerf Balls (1970), Uno (1972), Dungeons and Dragons (1974), Playmobil (1974), Star Wars Action Figures (1977), Strawberry

Shortcake (1979) and lets not forget the Rubik’s cube. Did you know that the cube has 43, 252,003,274, 489,856,000 different possible configurations and only one solution. 1980-1989. Trivial Pursuit (1982), Care Bears (1983), My Little Pony (1983), Transformers (1984), Koosh Ball (1987), Pictionary (1987), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1988), Super Soaker (1989) and the Cabbage Patch Doll in 1985. 1990-1999. Introduced during this time period was Mighty Morphin Power Rangers (1993), Tickle-Me Elmo (1996), Furby (1998) and of course Beanie Babies. This year the list will be filled with things regarding Frozen, Leap Frog Leap TV, Crayola Virtual Design Pro-Cars Set, and the new iPhone 6. Pair of 5-1 games leaves the Rockets with a 1-1 weekend record

Golden Rockets head coach Ty Davidson has been looking for more secondary scoring from his second place club for most of the year. Friday night he got just that, and in spades. Zack Finlay fired home a pair while line mates James Gaume and Spencer Gerth had 3 and 2 point nights,

respectively, as the Rockets rolled to a 5-1 win over the visiting Castlegar Rebels. “Our best line tonight was definitely the Finlay line, they were fantastic…they were really working hard and it paid off for them tonight,” Davidson said. After Rebels forward Dylan Ofner opened

the scoring less than 90 seconds into the game, it was all Golden. Finlay had the exceptionally quick response less than a minute later. “Gaume was just crashing the net with the puck and the puck came out and I just banged it in under the (goalie’s) arm,” Finlay recalled. Not to be outdone,

the Rockets’ top line added two of their own before the end of the first. Ian Desrosier was the goal scorer on both, scoring one with 9 minutes remaining and adding another late in the period of the backbreaking shorthanded variety. The shorty came after a beautiful play by Cole Mckechney to create space for the rushing duo. Mckechney threw it in front and it either bounced off Desrosier or Rebel goaltender Patrick Zubick and into the net. Either way, Desrosier got the credit for yet another goal while a man down. Gaume’s goal came on an excellent feed from Finlay midway through the second period, with Gerth also getting credit for an assist. Finlay completed the scoring late in the third after some terrific puck movement from Gaume and Travis Kelley, who moved to defence with regulars Alex Astasiewicz and Sean Ripley out

because of illness. Finlay has spent much of the year between Braeden Allkins and Nick Hoobanoff, but has really clicked with Gaume and Gerth of late. “The three of us worked really hard all game and we’re finally getting bounces going our way and generating some offence and putting the puck in the net which is pretty positive,” Finlay said. Magnus Viberg got the nod in net for Golden, and was terrific when he had to be while allowing just the single, early goal. Golden 1, Kimberley 5 Mark Becica was in net the following night, but it turned out to be a forgettable game for the Rockets as the Kimberley Dynamiters took it to them in a 5-1 defeat. The loss continues a difficult stretch for Golden in Kimberley, as the club has yet to win on the road against the Nitros, giving up

at least 5 goals in each loss. Tanner Watt had the lone goal for the Rockets early in the second period to tie the game up following Keenan Haase’s opener for Kimberley. It was all Nitros after that, however, as top scorer Jason Richter poured in a pair and Braden Saretsky and Coy Prevost added goals of their own. Becica made 20 saves in the defeat while opposing netminder stopped 27 of the 28 Rocket shots that he faced. The Rockets now sit at 41 points through 35 games, with the Creston Valley Thunder Cats and the Dynamiters each sitting five points back. However, the Rockets have played more games than all of their division rivals. Golden will close out their pre-Christmas schedule with a home and home series against the struggling Columbia Valley Rockies who have yet to win a game in December.

7th Annual Starlite Campaign Begins Cranbrook, BC…. EKFH’s 7th Annual Starlite Campaign has begun and the tradition of lighting stars atop the East Kootenay Regional Hospital is underway. The first three stars: Judy’s Star (Eagles Nest RV Resort), BMO Bank of Montreal and an accumulation of community donations has started the campaign with donations of $17,452.29. An extra-large star at the peak of the hospital has also been set ablaze signifying the start of the 2014 campaign. Funds raised through this year’s campaign will help community hospitals and health care facilities. EKFH is inviting donors to also consider investing their Starlite gift to provide critical support to intensive care at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. EKFH Chair Brian Clifford, “This is a very important time of the year for EKFH; holiday giving is a significant component of the funding the foundation is able to provide for many areas of health care in the East Kootenay. This year the Starlite Campaign takes on a special purpose with our efforts focused on raising critical funds for medical equipment for the new 6-bed ICU currently under construction at the regional hospital.” The 2014 Starlite Campaign goal is to raise $150,000 and to light 17 large stars and 24 smaller stars. By supporting

the Starlite Campaign donors can help strengthen health care in their own community and/or services provided at the East Kootenay Regional Hospital. The ICU Capital Campaign is a 17-month fundraising effort to raise $1,000,000; a more concentrated effort on the ICU campaign will begin in the early New Year. Since 2005 EKFH, with the generosity and help of donors like you, has provided $4,290,228 in funding to East Kootenay hospitals, facilities and programs. In the last four years, 95% of the donors’ donation has been dedicated back to the purchase of equipment and/or patient comforts.
