Deadly ‘dusting’ Woman’s death in Mill Lake Park linked to inhalant Vikki HOPES Abbotsford News
A woman whose body was found in Mill Lake Park in July died from inhaling “gas duster” used to clean electronic equipment, police said Tuesday. Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said six cans of the compressed gas were found near the woman when investigators arrived at the scene on July 30. The body of the woman, later identified as a 36-year-old Mission resident, was discovered at about 6 a.m. that day by a person walking their dog in a forested area of the park at Emerson Street and Bevan Avenue. There has been widespread speculation in the community that the woman was murdered, and MacDonald said police had to await autopsy and toxicology results before they could reveal the actual cause of death. Those results were only recently released to police, confirming that the woman died of fatal exposure to difluoroethane gas – one of the main components in compressed gas dusters. MacDonald said many people assume the products – used to clean keyboards and electronic equipment – contain only “canned air” and are harmless to inhale. However, the products contain chemicals such as tetrafluoroethan and difluoroethane, which can have devastating effects on the lungs, central nervous system and brain when inContinued on A3 haled, he said.

Family takes refuge in church Mother and sons were ordered deported to Hungary Monique TAMMINGA Black Press
An Abbotsford mother and her two sons have joined Langley’s José Figueroa in sanctuary at the Walnut Grove Lutheran Church. Mariann Juhasz and her sons Patrik, 17, and Tamas, 12, arrived at the church on Nov. 30 after spending 18 days in hiding, fearing they would be arrested by Canadian Border Service Agency officers and deported to their home country of Hungary. “We asked many churches for sanctuary and they all said no, until we spoke with Pastor Karl Keller (of Walnut Grove Lutheran),” said Patrik. “Before that we we so scared, living in four different places before coming here. Always watching our back.” Finally, the family feels safe, he said. “Once we stepped inside this church, the freedom I felt was like the four years we have lived in Canada,” said Patrik. With four people now in sanctuary, Walnut Grove Lutheran holds more than 55 per cent of all the people living in sanctuary in B.C. On Oct. 21, the CBSA told the family they were scheduled to be deported on Nov. 12. Immigration Canada had rejected Mariann’s request to stay in the country on humanitarian grounds. She fled Hungary four years ago, after finding out her youngest son was being abused by his father. She was estranged from Tamas’ father, but he was still allowed to see his son every second weekend. The psychological damage of the abuse is documented by therapists Tamas has seen in Canada and by his inability to cope with stress.

When he learned he would be deported, Tamas fainted on the table at the Vancouver CBSA office, said Patrik. The family claims they banged on the window and screamed for help, but weren’t able to wake Tamas. “We were so scared. We question why it took them around five minutes to respond,” said Patrik. An ambulance was called. Tamas could not eat and was throwing up — overcome by fear of being deported, said his brother. Tamas told his family he would commit
suicide before going back to his father in Hungary. In its decision, the Immigration Review Board member recognized that Tamas had been abused, but noted that Hungary is on Canada’s safe list. The family’s refugee claim was turned down after the Canadian government deemed that they “would not be subject to risk of persecution, danger of torture, risk to life or risk of cruel and unusual treatment or punishment” if they returned to their home country. Mariann disagrees. “If we go back, the Hungary, police could be waiting for me at the airport to arrest me,” she said. “Then Tamas will go to live with his father and he will die.” Fathers have overriding rights in Hungary, she said. Mariann explains that they came to Canada instead of another country in Europe to avoid being arrested. Because of the European Union agreement, police from Hungary have the right and ability to arrest her in any country within the union. More than 1,000 people have signed a petition asking for the Abbotsford family to be allowed to stay in Canada. Since they sought sanctuary in the church, friends and co-workers, as well as both boys’ teachers and Mariann’s bosses have stopped by. Before going into hiding, Mariann worked three jobs, including one at the food court at Sevenoaks Mall. Sevenoaks general manager Wendy Schultz said the Juhasz family has flourished in Canada, with both boys attending school and Mariann working hard to remain self-sufficient. Continued on A4

The practice of inhaling canned gas cleaners is referred to as “dusting.” MacDonald said this is the first time the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) has investigated such a death. He said even people within the APD were surprised to hear that dusters can be used in a way similar to the “huffing” of products such as cooking spray and glue. MacDonald said police hope releasing the information serves as an awareness message to the public and to retailers who might want to limit the sale of the product, for example, to kids. He said it is an important message to disseminate, particularly to people who might think there is no harm in “dusting.” “It might have made our victim high. It also made her dead,” MacDonald said. He said it’s not clear why the woman went to Mill Lake Park to inhale the products. Police do not believe anyone was with
her at the time of her death. He said she had come to Abbotsford the day before and had left the place where she was staying. MacDonald said the victim, who had recently moved to B.C., does not fit the stereotypical image of someone who is “marginalized” and would seek this type of method to get high. “She was in regular contact with out-ofprovince family and lived in a home with her two dogs.” He said it’s not been determined how much product the woman had ingested to cause her death. “It’s probably different for different people … I don’t think it’s the roll of the dice you want to take.” Few statistics are available on inhalant deaths, but the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) states that most users are between the ages of 10 and 16, although chronic solvent users are usually
in their 20s. The CAMH indicates that a 2011 survey of Ontario students in Grades 7 to 12 reported that 5.6 per cent had sniffed glue or solvents at least once in the past year. A 2004 survey of Canadians 15 years and older reported that 1.3 per cent had used inhalants at least once in their lifetime, according to the CAMH. One of the more high-profile deaths occurred in July of this year involving an American actress, Skye McCole Bartusiak, 21, who died from an accidental overdose possibly linked to dusting. Her autopsy results indicated she had died due to the “combined toxic effects of hydrocodone and difluoroethane with carisoprodol.” Due to inhalant abuse, a bitterant – a chemical that makes a product smell or taste bitter – is added to dusters and other toxic substances to discourage inhalation or ingestion.

“We were not collecting welfare, there was no child benefits, my mom paid taxes,” said Patrik. “We were just living a good life, waiting for our papers.” In Abbotsford, Patrik was involved in football and Tamas played basketball at school. Now they cannot step outside the church or they risk being arrested. Supporters of the family are providing financial aid, food and plenty of support, telling Pastor Karl they will take care of them. Now awaiting a re-review of his own case, the father of three from El Salvador is helping the Hungarian family look through their deportation order. The Canadian Border Services Agency issued a warrant for Figueroa’s arrest in October 2013. That was when he sought sanctuary in the church, rather than be deported to Central America. Figueroa recognizes that it can be a huge burden for a church to take in people seeking sanctuary, but he urges more churches to do so. Keller looked to scripture to know he as a pastor and man of God must grant this family sanctuary. But he wonders why a church in Abbotsford didn’t help. “I called a bunch of churches in Abbotsford but none would take them,” said Keller. “It is so surprising. They say Abbotsford is the Bible belt and yet it seems to me they are heavy on the belt and light on the Bible.” In getting to know the family, and hearing how traumatized Tamas is, he questions how CBSA made its decision. “Section 25 of the Immigration Regulations states the priority in all decisions should be with the children. We don’t see that here.”

The Salvation Army still needs help this holiday season, as they have received fewer donations than this time last year, while facing a greater demand for their services. Deb Lowell, spokesperson for the local Salvation Army, which covers Abbotsford and Mission, said they are behind on their Christmas fundraising goal of $450,000 by Dec. 31. The money supports services, like hot meals, emergency shelter, crisis response and outreach, for the entire year. The donations to the Red Kettle campaign, where volunteers collect funds at businesses around Abbotsford and Mission, are similar to last year with about $50,000 collected. But Lowell said donations that are mailed in or dropped off at the Centre of Hope on Gladys Avenue are “way down.” The Salvation Army has received about $40,000 – far less than this time last
year. “Knowing what our goal is, where we are at and how many days we have left, it’s a little bit concerning.” Adding to the concern is the much greater demand on resources in previous years. In 2014 the Salvation Army served more hot meals, more emergency food hampers and more parcels of fresh produce than the previous year. Also, they assisted more people with housing and substance abuse and detox programs. In addition to funds, the Salvation Army also needs more volunteers to help out with the kettle campaign through Abbotsford and Mission. Those interested in volunteering can call the Red Kettle hotline at 604-309-0660. A new initiative raising money for the Salvation Army this year is the “You Make an Ugly Sweater Look Good” contest. A convoy of decorated vehicles brought much-needed donations to the food bank on Saturday. For the eighth consecutive year, a group of Abbotsford businesses is helping the Abbotsford Food Bank to fill its shelves over the holiday season. All nine dealers

an egg-laying operation in Langley had become the 10th farm to be affected by the outbreak of the “highly pathogenic” H5N2 virus. A total of 233,800 birds have now either died from the outbreak, or been ordered euthanized. BCCGA president Ravi Bathe, who runs a 90,000-bird broiler chicken operation in Abbotsford, said farmers have been doing their utmost to stop the virus from spreading. “The farmers are doing everything they can and sometimes it’s out of their control,” he said Tuesday morning. “This is coming through the migratory bird population, we think, and what are you going to do? ... we need ventilation, we need air to get in the barns.” In a report to the World Organization for Animal Health, the CFIA wrote: “the H5N2 virus detected in B.C. contains five of eight gene segments from highly pathogenic Eurasian H5N8 virus including the H5 gene and three of eight segments from typical North American viruses including the N2 gene (wild bird origin).” However, in an email to the News, the CFIA said that the specific strain currently affecting Abbotsford farms has not been detected in wild birds in Canada, although surveillance and testing continues.

For the third time since her 22-year-old son was murdered in her Surrey apartment building seven years ago, Eileen Mohan attempted to describe to a judge the impact her child’s slaying has had on her life. In court last Friday for the sentencing of Cody Haevischer and Matthew Johnston, Mohan took the stand, tearfully trying to convey her deep, devastating and lingering loss. She said the bullets that killed her son shattered her family forever and she still carries great guilt that she didn’t stay home that day as planned instead of going in to work. “How was I to know that evil would walk to my doorstep?” she asked. Other Hand The Metro Vancouver Mayors’ Council decision to propose a .5 per cent sales tax increase to fund transit needs in the region is a sensible allocation of financial responsibility. The sales tax increase means that everyone who buys anything in Metro Vancouver will help pay for improvements. Any other of the suggested solutions – vehicle levy, carbon tax, gas tax, property tax – meant specific groups would have been, in many cases unfairly, taxed to provide service to others. This proposed tax increase is so small it will be hardly noticed, yet will generate some $250 million in revenue to provide expanded transit options and infrastructure improvements. Will it change shopping habits across the
region? Hardly. Why, for example, would someone drive from Langley to Abbotsford to save $5 on a $1,000 television, spending $10 on fuel to achieve that saving? And anyone in Metro thinking they can avoid the sales tax increase on big costs like a new car or truck by buying in Abbotsford, think again, because the .5 per cent could be levied on where you register the vehicle, not where you buy it. Of course, there are those who suggest folks who live outside Metro Vancouver should pay too. Sorry, but there won’t be any service provided to us through this levy. Yes, Valley residents do travel west, but we also pay a toll to cross the bridge. The B.C. branch of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation is apparently gearing up to fight the proposed sales tax increase. All well and good, but where do they think the funding for improvements should come from? Come up with an alternative solution and, if I lived in the region, might buy it. But to oppose this small tax increase, based only on the contention that TransLink is a poor steward of the funding it receives
now, and the increase it will get if the tax referendum is approved this spring, is weak at best. I agree that TransLink needs a major shake-up. After all, its aim is to get people out of cars and onto transit, so why do its executives receive hefty car allowances? If they led by example, and used the service

Perhaps while the provincial government is pondering the mayors’ council proposal, they might also look into the current inhouse expenditures and costs of running TransLink. Might be enough savings there to provide a couple of buses, or possibly even a whole slew of them.

Regardless, the urban growth of Metro Vancouver demands both a change of attitude of the car culture, and vastly improved and efficient transit systems. And then, the pressure will shift to Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Industry, jobs and housing must be both encouraged and planned for so that when there comes a need for rapid transit here, corridors will be in place, housing located adjacent to industry and our urban cores densified. Metro Vancouver is playing catch-up. We have the opportunity here to prepare for the future. Gloucester Industrial Estates, Fraser Highway, lands adjacent to Abbotsford Airport, what will eventually be abandoned rock quarry sites on Sumas Mountain, are key to our future job creation. When Abbotsford’s Official Community Plan is completed, and it seems to be taking an inordinate amount of time to achieve that, all of the above and more must be factored into it. Sentenced for car theft

A Chilliwack man who was named one of B.C.’s top 10 auto crime offenders earlier this year and was arrested in Abbotsford on Dec. 2 has been sentenced. Shaun Darryl Bolko, 32, was sentenced Wednesday in Abbotsford provincial court to five and a half months in prison on charges of possession of stolen property over $5,000 and breaching probation. His jail term will be followed by one year of probation. He pleaded guilty to the charges, while three others – possession of a break-in instrument, theft of a motor vehicle and a second count of breaching his probation – were stayed. The charges were laid after Bolko was arrested in Abbotsford on Dec. 2 while he was inside a Ford F-350 pickup stolen earlier in the day from Chilliwack. Bolko also pleaded guilty on Dec. 5 to a charge of driving while prohibited in Coquitlam in August and was is-
sued a one-year driving ban and a $500 fine. Bolko was named one of B.C.’s top 10 auto crime offenders in March and was arrested just two days later in Abbotsford while in the company of another man in the vicinity of a stolen Ford F-250. At the time, he was wanted on a warrant for failure to comply and possession of a stolen vehicle. Following his arrest, he faced an additional charge of breaching his conditions. In April, Bolko faced further charges of possession of stolen property, possession of a firearm, possession of a break-in instrument and breaching his probation. These charges were related to Bolko possessing a stolen Ford F-350 in Chilliwack. The following month, he was sentenced to 81 days in jail, followed by 18 months of probation and a lifetime weapons ban. Bolko has more than 15 criminal charges dating back to 2001, mainly in Chilliwack.

Three Abbotsford agencies are the recipients of grants from Coast Capital Savings’ Fraser Valley Young Leaders Community Council. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fraser Valley received $7,500 for its teen mentoring program, while United Way of the Fraser Valley and Vibrant Abbotsford are the recipients of $20,000 for the Banking on Youth program. West Abbotsford Community School received $10,000 for its Preteen Xtreme program. The funds are part of $440,000 that Coast Capital Savings has announced for 33 nonprofit organizations in the Fraser Valley.
Cancer group meets
Urban Barn locations in Abbotsford, Surrey and Langley collected almost 800 new fleece blankets this holiday season and donated them on Dec. 15 to Surrey’s Gateway Shelter. The donation was made through the company’s Blanket the Country in Warmth program. Gateway Shelter is a 40-bed barrier-free homeless shelter, offering a housing program, a resource centre, laundry facilities, showers, hot meals and more. Across the country, the Urban Barn campaign collected about 12,000 blankets.

The Abbotsford man charged last week with a murder in Surrey will be in court on Thursday seeking to have his prior drug conviction set aside. and were arrested at the scene. They were convicted in November 2011 and sentenced the following September. Information at the sentencing hearing indicated that Match was married with two children and had been a truck driver before becoming a carpet layer. He was also an active volunteer at the Sikh temple. Match did not have a criminal record before the drug conviction, although a restraining order was issued against him in January 2009, according to the provincial court database. Last week, the File photo Integrated Homicide during his 2009 arrest for Investigation Team announced that Match was being charged with the second-degree murder of Tarsem (Shane) Dhaliwal, 36, of Surrey. Dhaliwal was found dead Jan. 21 in a vehicle in the 18900 block of 92nd Avenue in the Port Kells area of Surrey. It was the city’s first homicide of the year. His cause of death has not been released by police. Police said Match and Dhaliwal knew each other and the attack was targeted, although they didn’t reveal the motive.

The Operation Red Nose program for Abbotsford and Mission reached an important milestone over the weekend during its sixth night of service for the season. Volunteers delivered the program’s 10,000th safe ride home at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Sunday. The seasonal designated driver service has grown steadily since its beginnings in 1996, when host organization PacificSport Fraser Valley first introduced the Quebec-born program to the province and the Abbotsford and Mission communities. For the 19th consecutive year, PacificSport is co-ordinating the program in Abbotsford and

Call for heritage policy change A local company and First Nations are reaching out to the province over its heritage policy after aboriginal cultural sites were a factor in the city’s rejection of a development in east Abbotsford. Corpus Management Group (CMG) had proposed an agri-centre – consolidating agricultural equipment dealers
at the intersection of Atkinson and Eldridge roads. Council denied the $40-million project, with one reason being the culturally significant sites. When CMG had first acquired a 165-acre development property in Abbotsford, no archaeological or other heritage sites were identified, according to a news re-
lease from the company. After CMG purchased the site, it was brought to their attention that a portion of the parcel included previously recorded archeological sites registered with the Archeology Branch and protected under the Heritage Conservation Act (HCA). CMG also learned of other First Nation heritage sites,

Province rescinds approval of law school Move follows criticism that covenant on sex is anti-gay

The province has terminated its authorization for what would have become B.C.’s first faith-based law school at a Langley Christian university. Trinity Western University president Bob Kuhn said he’s disappointed with the decision of Advanced Education Minister Amrik Virk to revoke the government’s consent granted a year ago. The move follows a referendum decision
by the Law Society of B.C. earlier this fall to revoke its accreditation for the law school. Opponents in the legal community say TWU discriminates against gays and lesbians because of its controversial community covenant that bans sex outside of traditional marriage between a man and a woman. Kuhn said TWU remains committed to launching the law school and must now carefully consider its options. Virk said in an emailed statement his decision to revoke approval means TWU
can’t enrol any students in the proposed law school. The Law Society of B.C. voted 74 per cent against recognizing the new law school in the referendum, which was confirmed in a 25-1 vote of the society’s board of governors. The referendum was ordered after thousands of lawyers demanded the law profession’s regulatory body reconsider its earlier decision. The law school was approved by the provincial government in December 2013.

Housing sales stable in Abbotsford: RE/MAX report The average sale price for detached houses this year is approximately $451,900 with minimal price increases expected next year. The average price for a residential unit (single family homes, condos, townhouses, etc.) in Abbotsford climbed five per cent to approximately $388,500 in 2014. Based on year-end estimates, the average residential sale price is projected to increase by 0.5 per cent. New infrastructure linking communities is important in Abbotsford, including the South Surrey Perimeter Highway connecting to Richmond, and additional Highway 1 lanes going to Langley. As

The Community Access Program (CAP) at Yale secondary has made its annual donation to local charities. The program is for students who are moderately and mildly intellectually disabled. Since September, they have been collecting food donations for the Abbotsford Food Bank, along with the bottles they collect for their business throughout the year. The group achieved its goal of raising $1,000 and has now donated money to the food bank, Youth Unlimited and Cyrus Centre.

Brown, a professional photographer at Revival Arts in Abbotsford, received the honour when his work was among that exhibited in the 2014 Provincial Image Salon at the Roundhouse in Vancouver. He also won the Best in Class award and earned a Judges’ Choice ribbon for his image “Sultana of Style” in the fashion class, as well as the Jaan de Haas and the Langara Alumni award for his image “Preposterous Erection.” Brown also received honourable mentions in the fine art class for “Preposterous Erection” and in the Illustration class for “Love Potion Number Nine.” This year, there were 214 images entered in the Provincial Image Salon, with 56 per cent of those accepted into the National Image Salon. There were 14 finalists for the Photographer of the Year award. When assessing the submissions, the panel of master judges considered criteria such as impact, creativity, style, composition and technique. “There were so many talented photographers who were finalists for the Photographer of the Year award that I was ecstatic to hear that I was chosen as the winner,” Brown said. “Being a competing member of the Professional Photographers of Canada helps me to continue raising the bar for image creation. I love the challenge and look forward to what next year will bring.” Brown is a secondgeneration artist and has been pursuing photography since he bought his first SLR camera from an ad in the “Buckpasser” in 1997 and studied com-
mercial photography at Langara College in Vancouver. He has used his photography skills to support many non-profit organizations locally and internationally such as Run for Water, the Crystal Gala, We Day, Matthew’s House and many more. He has photographed celebrities including Nelly Furtado, Jennifer Hudson, Macklemore with Ryan Lewis, Selena Gomez and Nick Jonas for Free the Children’s We Day events. Brown has previously won top provincial and national awards for his commercial and portrait photography and holds nine accreditations from the PPOC. He regularly does commercial photography for a wide variety of North American companies and portrait photography for families throughout the Lower Mainland.

Sadly we announce the sudden passing of Bob Burgess on December 8, 2014 after a short brave battle with cancer. Survived by his wife, Noreen of 45 years, daughter Megan (Owen), grandchildren Kassidy and Jack, two sisters Pat and Irene and many nieces and nephews who he loved and enjoyed dearly and predeceased by his daughter Erin (2000), his three sisters and two brothers. Bob was born in Abbotsford and grew up on a farm in Aldergrove with seven siblings. He always enjoyed the farm lifestyle. His career of being a teacher was influenced by a teacher he had in high school and he went on to get his degree at SFU. His first job posting was at Abby Junior where he spent 17 years of his career under the guidance of Barry Stewart. Because of his love of sports, he gave all his time to coaching basketball and anything else that was needed. After Abby Junior he moved over to Yale Secondary where he had the opportunity to coach senior boys and work on his Masters to then become Vice Principal. His commitment to education and love of working with kids to better their lives was his passion. We know he has touched a lot of lives as we have met people (ex students) all over the world. Bob and Noreen have enjoyed retirement, spending their winters in Palm Springs but the move to a small farm in Chilliwack with his children has brought Bob back to his farming roots and he loved every moment of it, teaching his grandchildren the love of farm life. We want to thank every doctor and nurse that supported us on this difficult journey. Their care and compassion will never be forgotten. We would also like to thank family and friends for their love and support. In lieu of flowers the family has arranged for donations to be made in Bob’s memory to Erin’s scholarship fund. Helen Hildebrandt passed away on December 10, 2014 in Abbotsford at the age of 82 years. She was born on March 8, 1932 in Osterwick, Ukraine. She is survived by her loving husband Henry of 63 years, children Henry (Anita) Hildebrandt, Tina (Henry) Bergen, John (Sharon) Hildebrandt, Elsie (Hildebrandt) Thiessen, Abe (Lorna) Hildebrandt, Rosie (Al) Brechin and many precious grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, and great-greatgrandhild. Helen was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, and couldn’t wait to see them. And she enjoyed any visits from her children. She was a charter member of Eben-Ezer Church, loved the Lord, and she devoted a big part of her life to volunteering at MCC, and helping others. Hard times and hard work was a part of her life, with six kids running a farm in the earlier years, then an RV business for the last part of her life before she finally got a chance to retire. She never complained and made the best of everything she ran into. In the last few years of her life, she spoke many times of going to her home in Heaven, and now there is no more suffering from illness and she is in a good place and happy. We would like to thank all the wonderful staff at the Menno Home who cared, had compassion, and took good care of her in her time there. Soren Jensen, Sr. passed away on December 10th, 2014 surrounded by his beloved family at the age of 73. He was the heart and centre of his family and will be incredibly missed. Soren was born in Port Alberni on September 29th, 1941 and spent most of his life in Abbotsford. He was the son of Henry and Donalda Jensen (nee Bishop) - deceased - who raised their four energetic and rambunctious sons on their farm. Soren’s greatest joy was his own family - his treasured wife Judy, his son Soren Jr. (Fiona) and daughter Brigit. He will be especially missed by his “special boy”, his grandson Henry. Also grieving his loss are his brothers Clarence, Les and Frank and their families, Judy’s mother Bertha and siblings Eleanor, Bruce, Gail, Sylvia, Monty, Gwen and their families and the “boys” Fraser and Oliver. Soren’s careers were varied - and in all of them he made friends and admirers. He also volunteered countless hours for many organizations including the Abbotsford Curling Club, Abbotsford Whalers Swim club, and Hole-in-theWall. Soren was a strong and guiding force for his family always ready with a joke and a helping hand. If you were lucky enough to spend time with him you know desserts are never safe around eagles. The family would like to thank the first responders and staff at the Abbotsford Hospital, along with Dr. Keith and the nursing staff at the B.C. Cancer Agency in Abbotsford, who supported him in the last few months. A memorial service will be held at the Abbotsford Ramada, 36035 North Parallel Road on Monday, December 22nd at 2:00 pm. Gladys St. Laurent of Abbotsford, BC passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord on the evening of Saturday, December 13, 2014 with her loving family by her side in Kamloops. Born in Hillandale, Saskatchewan, Gladys is survived by her two daughters, Jacqueline and Marceline, and son, Gerry (Donna). Gladys’ memory will also be cherished by her grandchildren Hayley, Ashley, Corey, and Shaylyn, all of whom she loved dearly. She was predeceased by her husband, Marcel, in 2005 and her brothers, Cecil and Carl. Gladys grew up in Val Marie, Saskatchewan before she ventured west, met her husband, and settled in Abbotsford, BC where she raised her family and lived for over 60 years. In Abbotsford, Gladys attended Trinity Memorial United Church, was an avid bowler, and volunteered her time for the Church and Red Cross. She made numerous life-long friends in Abbotsford with whom she enjoyed socializing and keeping in touch with. Particularly in her later years, Gladys’ family filled her with joy and, above all, she loved those close to her unconditionally. Heaven welcomed a beautiful soul Saturday evening. Rest in peace, Mom. We will love and miss you always. Gladys requested to be remembered humbly without a service.
