Home invasion suspect dead

RCMP have halted their search for a male suspect after a home invasion this weekend. Dec. 7 Quesnel RCMP requested the public to be vigilant in locking their doors and securing their homes after an unknown male broke into a residence in the 4000 block of Hixon Road and assaulted a female occupant early that morning. Dec. 8 at 9:51 a.m., the Quesnel RCMP responded to a report of a sudden death of a 32-year-old man in the 3100 block of Nazko Road in the Bouchie Lake area. RCMP said investigative efforts have now determined that these two files are connected. “Police have ruled out foul play in this sudden death, however, strong evidence suggests that the deceased male is responsible for the assault on Hixon Road which was reported the previous day,” the release states. Police are no longer seeking any other suspects and do not have any safety concerns for the public. The B.C. Coroner Service has been advised of the sudden death and RCMP will assist in the investigation. The Quesnel RCMP would like to thank the public for their cooperation with this investigation and for remaining vigilant during this time.

Home owners urged to deal with beetle-infected trees MONICA LAMB-YORSKI Williams Lake Tribune Since the wildfires of 2009 and 2010, the Douglas fir beetle has been hard at work killing trees in the Cariboo, according to Cariboo Region forest entomologist Jodi Axelson. “The ecology of this beetle is that fires will fire-up the population,” Axelson said. “A lot of that increase is now quite visible. When you look around the valley, down the Highway 97 corridor, or on the golf course you will see a lot of red trees.” When large wildfires occur, often a number of trees on the outskirts of the burnt area are damaged, scarred and weakened. “Those are exactly the kind of trees, when the populations are low, that the beetles will go to,”

Axelson said. “If you get enough of these damaged trees on the landscape, over a number of years, you’ll see the population build because there’s so much available host to them.” Axelson said signs of infested trees can be discoloured foliage, with needles turning yellow, bright pink-red and then a dark rust. “A Douglas fir tree that is experiencing a current attack may maintain a green, healthylooking crown for many months, but it’s important to understand live beetles emerge the following year and infest nearby trees.” If people see a pale green, yellow, red, brown or grey Douglas fir tree on or near their property, they are asked to check the surrounding trees to determine if

they have also been infested with Douglas fir beetles. To raise public awareness about the Douglas fir beetle, Axelson has created a four-page brochure for landowners to help mitigate the beetle’s spread. It was made available Friday on the Ministry of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations website and can be printed at home, or picked up at the ministry’s offices. “I hoped to give people some guidance on how to deal with it in their own lives and on their own property,” Axelson said. While the best thing to do is cut the trees down and ideally remove them from the site, if people want

to use the wood for firewood, they need to remove the bark. “If you were to cut up the wood and stack it, those beetles are highly likely to still survive,” she warned. The Douglasfir beetle is very small, similar to the mountain pine beetle, and thousands can live on one tree. And those thousands of beetles are also doing the same thing the mountain pine beetle was doing to pine. They bore underneath the bark, mine the cambium and lay all their eggs. The eggs hatch into pupa that eat their way into the tree. “The really large Douglas Fir that are most susceptible to the Douglas fir beetle

are really lovely trees to have on our property, in our parks and around us,” she said. “It’s sad to see those trees go.”

Today’s little moments become tomorrow’s precious memories.

W

alking past my son’s closed classroom door, I paused as their soprano voices filtered through. Leaning my head against the frame, I closed my eyes and took a moment to listen – really listen. They sang, loud, proud, I could picture them standing in two rows, hands straight at their sides, belting out the song they’ve been practicing now for more than a month. It was easily the best part of my day. It’s pretty easy this time of year to get wrapped up the cost, the time, the stress and the business that is the holiday season. But we must try to keep the true meaning of what this is all about: the excitement, the lights, the music, the love, the laughter. It’s the little things that make it the big things. It’s the moment you realize your son has asked Santa to please not forget mom. It’s the wonder in the eyes of a little girl waiting for Santa to arrive. It’s watching an elderly couple slowly walking hand-in-hand with a bag full of toys for much loved grandchildren. It’s taking a drive through your community to check out the lights on your neighbours homes. It’s watching old Christmas movies and reflecting on how incredibly blessed we are. Because we really are very lucky. We simply need to take a moment to realize that and then hold tight to the warmth that feeling generates. Many are not so fortunate. Many are not afforded the opportunity to watch as their children emanate pure joy. Far too many cannot reach into a bag of memories and think “wow, am I ever lucky.” This season let’s take those little moments, hold onto them and truly appreciate our good fortune. –Autumn MacDonald, Observer

You send some because you trust him implicitly, he’s also sharing his naked images, and this is the man you’re planning a life with. Now imagine, two years later, you discover one of your private full frontal nudes displayed publicly on his Twitter account. Your business has been tagged and he has written: “This is the thief and liar who calls herself a counselor. She’s a gold digger who uses people.” The victim of this particular attack is a friend I’ll call Joan. She is the only parent and sole provider for two children that she wants to protect – hence the alias. As horrified as she was to discover the betrayal of the man she’d been in love with for three and a half years, she wasn’t ashamed of her picture nor shocked that he posted it. He had threatened that if she didn’t comply with his demands by a certain time he would embarrass her, and after seeing an alarming new side of him since their recent break up, she could envision him doing almost anything. Of course, there are two sides to every story, so detailing the specifics of their relationship or the

Anyone who does that should lose all credibility and respect. The man responsible for this repulsive act is a firefighter in Texas. If ever there was a group of individuals who would be aghast at his dishonourable conduct, professional heroes such as these would be it. When Joan discovered her naked photo posted to Twitter, she immediately reported it to the social media site. An hour later he posted it a second time stating that she uses people and destroys lives. He then tried to connect with her children. Joan contacted the RCMP in West Kelowna where she lives, the police in Texas where he lives, the pastor of his church and the fire department where he works. The pastor and the fire marshal responded with a

Many people will question Joan for sending him pictures in the first place. “This reaction highlights an underlying attitude of misogyny,” she said. “People shouldn’t be asking ‘Why did she?’ but ‘How could he?’ They should be appalled at his abhorrent behaviour. Friends and colleagues should find it so totally unacceptable and repugnant that they look at him in a different light entirely. The change in our society will come when men stand up and hold others accountable and say this is not okay. Because as women, we should be able to look, act, share, speak and exist without the inhibition that lies in wondering how any of that might be used against us.” The change will also come when people understand that she has nothing to be ashamed of. Joan now worries they’ll appear again within her professional circle or on revenge porn sites. She’s constantly in surveillance mode, glued to her electronics, feeling like a sitting duck. I teach my children to stand up to bullies. I felt physically ill at the idea of not standing up for myself or any other woman he may do this to. It’s like giving in to a terrorist.” This was more than a betrayal for Joan. “It was an unconscionable act,” she said. “That someone would love and appreciate my body when they got what they wanted and then use it against me when they didn’t shows an age old power dynamic of entitlement and ownership.” And the even bigger issue for her was safety. lack of snow removal and sanding that we encountered. The road conditions, especially on the return trip, were appalling – black ice and unsalted, unsanded hills. Semi truck units were sliding backwards as they attempted grades and were literally creeping on downhill portions. Private vehicles were

losing traction both going uphill and downhill, becoming hazards for impatient drivers anxious to get by. I am not unfamiliar with winter driving conditions, having learned to drive in Churchill, Manitoba, and experiencing winter driving from BC to Nova Scotia. I lived in Merritt for over a decade before

deactivate the cruise control feature can cause you to lose control of your vehicle. Don’t get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle. Remember that your four-wheel drive vehicle may help you get going quicker than other vehicles but it won’t help you stop any faster. Many 4x4 vehicles are heavier than passenger vehicles and actually may take longer to stop. Don’t get overconfident in your 4x4 vehicle’s traction. Your 4x4 can lose traction as quickly as a two-wheel drive vehicle. If your vehicle is equipped with anti-lock brakes, do not pump them in attempting to stop. The right way is to step on the brake pedal and steer against the slide. Look further ahead in traffic than you normally do. Actions by cars and trucks will alert you more quickly to problems and give you a split second extra time to react safely. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

The rain and windstorms have started and it won’t be long before the temperatures start to dip. Northern BC and the Interior have already experienced the cold. At the coast, it seems every year the first snowfall Actions by cars creates chaos and adjusting and trucks will alert to the conditions is a big you more quickly to challenge for many people. That said; driving in the winproblems and give ter season generally presents you a split second more problems than driving extra time to react in other seasons wherever you call home. The vehicle safely. and the driver must be Ian Harwood prepared as well as possible to cope with these kinds of driving conditions. In winter driving, braking and stopping the vehicle, of course, cause the most difficult moments. The tires play a critical role in stopping the vehicle, and they need even more care and attention than in the other seasons. Most SUVs have a passenger car tire classification with M+S stamped on the sidewall, for Mud and Snow and are considered all-season tires. If it is not, your vehicle must be fitted with tires suitable for any type of climate, even the most severe ones. In winter the pressure of the tire must also be controlled more frequently. This is because a reduction of the outside temperature causes a contraction of the air inside the tire, accelerating the normal and gradual pressure loss process by a value around 1-2 PSI for each 5° C decrease in temperature. Contrary to popular opinion, a lower inflation pressure than normal does not improve tire traction on snow. It makes them much more liable to damage. Always remember that in any season and with any temperature, insufficient pressure is always the main cause of tire damage. Here is some advice to always bear in mind it is during winter driving conditions: Use brakes carefully. Brake early. Brake correctly. It takes more time and distance to stop in icy conditions. Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridge decks will ice up sooner than the pavement. Do not use the cruise control in winter conditions. Even roads that appear clear can have sudden slippery spots and the short touch of your brakes to

t this time of year, most of us tend to reminisce about the good old days. Ever since we moved to Quesnel in 1980, I have heard stories about Cariboo School. Fortunately, for those of you who attended Cariboo School, the museum has a photo album that was donated by Eva Smith Farquahar. The album holds many Quesnel memories of Cariboo School along with the Walk to Barkerville, the Legion Pipe Band and a newspaper clipping with the Kersley Junior Band. There are even some 1970’s pictures of the Billy Barker Day Parade. There is also no shortage of wedding pictures in the album. I hesitate to name any names just in case there might have been a parting of the ways, but if you were ever a friend of Eva Smith’s in the 1970’s and she was at your wedding, she has your picture. And oh – the haircuts or lack thereof. You do realize that the 60’s and 70’s are now history, which is why Quesnel Museum is asking you start parting with some of your treasures from that time period. As Christmas approaches

PAST TIME and you drag out those old photo albums, keep the Museum in mind. History was being made and your museum wants to be certain that we preserve it! Speaking of coming to Quesnel and Cariboo School, there were many young teachers who came to Quesnel in the 70’s who intended to teach here for just a few years and now 40 plus years later, they’re still here. Del Cyr, Lorraine Cyr, Marvin Schley, Lorna Schley, Case DeVries, anyone else you can name? As well as being teachers, they made significant contributions to the well-being of a vibrant community. The photos to which I am referring show Christmas Concerts, teen dances, Spring Flings and a variety of events put on by teachers and students. Hope to see you as you pass time at the Quesnel and District Museum and Archives. I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence; Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled byAnd that has made all the difference.

Obituary Tribute

Doreen Heath It is with great sorrow that we announce the recent passing of Doreen Heath (nee Constable). With her parents having recently arrived from England, Doreen, an only child, was born on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 1926, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The date of birth was fitting due to her nature and approach to life. Working at a company in Winnipeg, she met Joe, her future husband, and was soon married. Work transferred them to Mexico City in 1950 where their three children, Hilarie, Joe, and Jonathan, were born and raised. 1980 saw them being transferred to Madison, Wisconsin, and finally retiring to Quesnel in 1982. Doreen was active with the Eastern Star, enjoyed reading and travelling, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Joe, who passed away in 2013 after sixty six years of marriage and is survived by her three children, two of them living in Mexico, six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. We will miss her generosity and kindness that touched on everyone she met. Doreen will live on in our hearts forever.

JUST WHAT THE DOCTORS ORDERED Out of challenge comes opportunity and at Selkirk College the Rural Pre-Medicine Program is taking on the problem of a physician shortage outside urban areas by opening the door for students who desire to follow a pathway towards a career in medicine well suited for rural Canada. Finding Solutions to the Rural Doctor Crisis The story of the Selkirk College Rural PreMedicine Program is the story of why community colleges are vital to Canada’s education system. Its genesis arrived through a need to fill a critical gap with creative solutions and tangible outcomes, a model that is now playing out in the classrooms of the Castlegar Campus in British Columbia’s Southern Interior. The three-year Rural Pre-Medicine Program launched in September with its first cohort of 17 eager students. With passionate mentors and dedicated instructors, the program aims to build a foundation of experience and knowledge students will need to prepare for entrance into medical school. “If you come from a rural area, you are among those most likely to go back to a rural area,” says Rural Pre-Medicine Program Coordinator Elizabeth Lund. “If you want to populate the rural areas with physicians, you need to provide the proper education to students who live in rural areas and have a strong desire to get into medical school.” The curriculum in the Rural Pre-Medicine Program weaves together courses tailored to rural medicine with courses recommended for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). Extra training in skills such as mediation and conflict resolution, leadership, communication and interprofessional skills, small business training and MCAT preparation supports students’ futures as physicians and their medical school applications. “People understand that this is something that can form one piece of a really long term solution to a big problem,” says Lund. “This is not a problem for doctors or the government, really this is a problem in our society across Canada where there is a big difference between rural and urban.”

RURAL PRE-MEDICINE

If you want to populate the rural areas with physicians, you need to provide the proper education to students who live in rural areas and have a strong desire to get into medical school. ELIZABETH LUND, RURAL PRE-MEDICINE PROGRAM COORDINATOR, SELKIRK COLLEGE

Helping Solve the Problem of a Growing Need The mounting challenges with health care in rural Canada have gained traction in the media over the last few years. With shrinking government budgets, an aging population and societal shifts forming the basis of these struggles, more attention has been focussed on the gap between urban and rural. Three years ago, Lund and her colleagues in the Selkirk College School of University Arts & Sciences were looking for ways to bolster second year sciences at the Castlegar Campus. A story on CBC radio about the doctor shortage in rural British Columbia triggered the idea for a program that would help address the need with homegrown solutions. Lund was charged with putting together the proposal and soliciting support. For almost two years Lund put her skills in research and passion for education to the test as she approached senior levels of government, the Doctors of BC, local physicians, the University of British Columbia and anybody else that would listen. “There was a lot of pounding the pavement… I had to become a salesperson,” says Lund, who holds a PhD in Chemistry. “That’s the last thing I thought I would ever do, but I was selling something that I totally believe in. It ceases to be selling and becomes talking to people to let them know what we want to do.”

The First Cohort a Brilliant Example of What is Possible On a sunny late-September afternoon in Castlegar, Selkirk College administration joined representatives from the Doctors of BC, the Ministry of Health and health care professionals from around the Kootenay region for a special reception to welcome the first Rural Pre-Medicine cohort to the program. With a class made up of diverse backgrounds that range from recent high school grads to single mothers who have been away from post-secondary for more than a decade, there was a buzz in the air. “I have a vision of some of the graduates of this program not only making it into medical school, but also being really grounded and solid people,” said Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital physician Dr. Blair Stanley, chair of the program’s advisory committee. “Not only because of their rural roots, but because of some of the learnings they will have had in this unique program. They will bring that groundedness and can bring that awareness into their clinical setting when they are looking after patients. I think that will be a magical connection that they will have with patients and the work they do.” A visit to a Friday afternoon chemistry lab is further proof that the cohort model and small classroom environment is already paying dividends. Three months into their education journey at Selkirk College, students work together with a spirit more often found with the cohesiveness of a sports team rather than the individualistic competitive pursuit of entrance into medical school. “You can see already that the students in this program are going do something and they are going to do something great… It’s already a success,” says Lund. “I’m really proud of these students and very excited about the opportunities for them in the future. Whether they end up choosing medicine or another health field or something else completely different in science, this is where it starts.”

Alicia Pongracz (top) and Jaeger Nickson (bottom left) are students in the first Rural Pre-Medicine Program cohort that is diligently building skills on the Castlegar Campus. With a diverse background and intimate understanding of the challenges faced by students in smaller communities, Rural Pre-Medicine Program Coordinator Elizabeth Lund (bottom right) is the motivating presence behind Selkirk College’s push to bolster the numbers of rural doctors.
