The facility consists of a CFL size football field, a smaller practice area and a covered stadium containing approximately 2000 seats. Commonly known as the “Home of the Huskers”, Exhibition Field has also been the venue of choice for Vancouver Whitecaps games, as well as other high caliber soccer competitions, field hockey and rugby.

Townsend Park The Artificial Turf Field, constructed at the East end of Townsend Park, has some exciting features: • It can sustain up to 6x the play of natural turf • It doesn’t require rest periods for turf to heal • It reduces the burden on other natural fields • Maintenance costs are similar to premier natural turf • New turf technologies incorporate crumb rubber to reduce injuries • This field is only closed when snow accumulates on it. Otherwise it stays open in all weather conditions

Come And Enjoy The Wonderful Vedder River Rotary Trail Experience The Vedder Rotary Trail has become a very popular trail in Chilliwack with an average of 18,000 users every month. As a consequence of its success the trail can sometimes see some user congestion. For the safety of all please use these guidelines to make your visit safer and more enjoyable. • Keep right except to pass. • Travel in a consistent , predictable manner (remember children and animals don’t always do so), and always look behind you before changing your position on the trail. • Respect all private property – Do not wander off trail. • Keep the trail clean. Please pack out what you have packed in or use the trail trash cans.

Dog Walkers

must keep their pets on a short leash and have it walking along the right outside edge of the trail. All dog walkers must remove their animal’s waste. Unleashed dogs are not permitted. Dog walkers must yield to horses for safety. Please do not let your dog enter shallow water where salmon lay their eggs. Your pet can innocently destroy them.

should avoid walking or jogging more than two abreast to allow other users to pass safely.

Virtual Interpretive Trail Tour

The City is excited to introduce a new “virtual” tour of the Vedder and Peach Creek trail systems. Utilizing smart phone technology to “read” simple QR code signs, trail users simply locate and scan the QR codes on the signage along the trails and an educational video will play on the smartphone. The virtual tour is intended to enhance a trail users experience by providing an interesting and informative self-guided virtual video tour. A variety of topics from the science of the fish to the ecology of the river are presented by the virtual tour guide for an educational and entertaining trail experience. There are a total of 15 QR code signs along the trail and locating all of the codes becomes a scavenger hunt and a great educational walk for the family.

Cyclists

should ride in single file and at a safe speed. They must slow down in when approaching other trail users or where visibility ahead is limited

Equestrian

users must be in control of their horse when using the trail. Riders must dismount and remove manure from trail surface. Be fully aware of your surroundings at all times especially of other trail users traveling at a different rate of speed.

Chilliwack Youth Orchestra Our Orchestra

Senior Strings

The CYO offers three different orchestras to engage young musicians with varying levels of experience. Each orchestra has opportunities to perform exciting repertoire as well as unique opportunities to collaborate as combined groups. With our special mentorship program, we have university students and advanced musicians working with the students to coach students on their specific instruments.

Conducted by Maestro Louwersheimer, the Senior Orchestra will challenge and inspire the most advanced players as they perform exciting symphonic repertoire with artistry and increasing skill.

Junior Strings Conducted by David Voth, this orchestra gives younger string players their first experience with an ensemble, playing music that is fun and engaging. These players will also have the opportunity to perform in a full orchestra setting when they join together with the Intermediate Orchestra.

Intermediate Strings Also conducted by David Voth, the Intermediate Orchestra incorporates wind, brass, and percussion players alongside more experienced string players to create a full orchestra. They perform a wide variety of music, from jazz standards to classical masterworks. Combining with the Senior Orchestra will also allow these players to learn from their more advanced peers as they perform larger symphonic works.

Youth Helpin g Youth

Mission Statement The Chilliwack Youth Orchestra is a nonprofit organization striving to give back to our community, while at the same time teaching young musicians to work and play together as a team. Our goal is to enrich Chilliwack by providing opportunities for people of all ages to come and listen to great music. At least one concert a year will be a full benefit concert with all proceeds going to support a local charity.

Vision The Purpose of the Chilliwack Youth Orchestra Society is: a. To provide affordable, high quality training in orchestral and ensemble playing to young musicians; b. To inspire our members to strive toward excellence in an atmosphere of friendship, inclusiveness and good citizenship; and c. To foster an appreciation of classical music among young people and in our communities.

The proceeds from one concert each year will be donated to a local charity. The proceeds from our first concert, held on 6 December 2014, went to the Chilliwack Cyrus Centre.

In Our Chambers Gallery Basketry Exhibit opening February 21, 2015! For centuries, aboriginal basket makers made containers from roots, bark and grasses. These baskets served useful functions such as storing goods and foods. Baskets were given as gifts to witnesses who gathered for important events such as potlatches, or traded with other aboriginal communities for goods unavailable in local areas. In the mid-1880s when transcontinental railroads were completed, tourists began flooding the west. Basket makers found a market for the sale of the intricately woven containers. “No home is complete now-a-days without a neat and artistically arranged Indian basket corner,” heralded a 1904 brochure produced by the Alaska Steamship Company. By the late 1930s, this curio trade had largely dried up. The skills required to make baskets were slowly but not completely disappearing. Today these skills are still being passed on as modern-day basket makers study the techniques of past generations to create new and innovative designs. The exhibit looks at the changing styles and uses of baskets within the context of changing economies and cultural usages.

Children build their endurance using flutter kick with assisted glides. Swim Kids 3 – 5 (Ages 6+) These levels build the child’s skill in front and back crawl, diving, sculling, and whip kick. They are taught to be water safe by understanding their own limits and learning boating skills. Endurance is achieved by building strength in the flutter kick and dolphin kick, up to a 50-metre swim.

Swim Kids 6 – 7 Front and back crawl continue to be refined. Elementary backstroke and whip kick on the front are introduced. Ice safety, choking, and elementary rescue of others with throwing assists are taught. Endurance is built to a 150-metre swim. Swim Kids 8 – 10 Breaststroke and scissor kick are introduced, and all strokes continue to be refined. Surface dives, rescues from ice, and rescue breathing are taught. They learn about fitness and making wise choices. Endurance is built using dolphin kick, butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim. Private Swimming Lessons Enjoy exclusive one on one instruction! Chilliwack Family YMCA

Aquatics

We offer a unique continuous swim lesson system. At the Y, you no longer need to scramble every season to ensure your child gets a convenient swim lesson time. We offer swim lessons on a continuous basis and once you’ve signed up and selected your spot, it’s yours to keep. This means you do not need to register every season and you don’t have to worry about having your slot taken by someone else. You can register your child at any time and they can progress at their own pace within a group. • We help kids jump in, have fun, learn to swim and grow their confidence. • Our programs—from Bobbers to Stars—give your kids the skills needed for a lifetime of safe fun in the water. • Membership makes it easy for families to be active together with recreational swimming and family swimming at convenient times. • Membership includes all-day access to Aquafit and lane swimming. • For those 16 and older who have their Bronze Cross, NLS or Star 6 accreditation already, we offer a course in how to become a YMCA Swim Instructor.

MEND - Mind, Exercise, Nutrition... Do It!

Trying to maintain a healthy, active lifestyle can be challenging. With school, an abundance of screen time and a busy family life, kids are spending less time being active and as a result, many are above a healthy weight. Helping kids grow up strong and healthy is why the YMCA exists. That’s why we offer MEND, a provincially funded program that empowers children and families to become fitter and healthier. This free and fun 10-week program supports children ages 7-13 who are above a healthy body weight to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Parents/ caregivers join their children in each session to learn about how to choose healthier foods and spend more time being physically active.

Children

Parents with young kids are tight on time and energy. That’s why we focus on making our programs easy to fit into your schedule, while giving you the chance to exercise and recharge. Whether you’re playing games together on Family Night, dropping in for a swim, exposing your child to new activities or each finding your own way to get fit, rest assured that you are growing together as a family at the Y. Activities for children include: • Swim Lessons • Active Play • Creative Play • Active Games • Gymnastics • Tumble Time • Freak Out Friday • Physical Literacy Programs

Licensed Child Care

Choosing a child care provider is a big decision. You want your child to feel at home, learn, grow and have fun in an environment that is welcoming, safe and stimulating. And most of all you want caring and supportive caregivers who understand what makes your child special. Through both our early years and before and after school licensed programs, kids learn values and positive behaviours in a supportive environment. Children have the opportunity to be active, have fun and develop confidence. Plus, parents get the peace of mind knowing that children are active and learning while spending time with friends and positive adult role models. We offer programs for the following ages: • Infant and toddler (0-36 months) • 3-5 year olds • Preschool • 5-12 year olds (before and after school) WINTER/SPRING 2015 CHILLIWACK LEISURE GUIDE 47

Trade Shows, Conventions, Concerts, Dog Shows, Horse Shows, Arena Cross Events, ABA BMX Bike Grand Nationals, Kart Racing and local club events just to name a few. There is a seven acre field for outdoor concerts and festivals as well as plenty of space for camping with your event. There is also a rodeo arena as well as two outdoor sand arenas for your many different equestrian and agricultural events. All arenas are equipped with outdoor lighting for those evening rentals. Heritage Park, which has been operational since July 2001, is ideally and conveniently located just off the Trans Canada Highway at Exit 116. This allows for easy access by those within Chilliwack as well as people living in the Lower mainland. The striking presence of this 150,000 square foot red building and 65 acre grounds also

attracts travelers from all over the Canada, as well as many visitors from the United States. Heritage Park is a versatile facility. Features include a flexible public address system, box office and show office. The building is comprised of four floors; two are concrete floors that measure approximately 35,000 square feet each. There is also a 48,000 square foot dirt floor and a 30,000 square foot dirt floor. We have 150 portable box stalls for your equestrian event that can be put up on either the concrete or dirt floors, depending on your requirements. The building houses a portable stage, as well as tables and chairs. Our washroom facilities include showers and are handicapped accessible. Heritage Park is not only a fine multiuse facility, but it also offers you a management and staff who are committed to your satisfaction. We would be pleased to work with you to help make your event a success.

Chilliwack is one of 82 communities in BC that are registered as an official Active Community. The Chilliwack Active for Life Committee is championing a community effort to encourage all residents of Chilliwack to lead a healthier, active lifestyle.

four simple guidelines to remember for raising healthy children

Enjoy– FIVE or more vegetables & fruits every day

Power down– no more than TWO hours of screen time a day

Play actively– at least ONE hour each day

Choose healthy– ZERO sugar-sweetened drinks Our Healthy Kids Initiative is framed by a health promotion message - Live 5-2-1-0 - that is easy to remember, solution-oriented (we have tips on how to follow it!) and evidence-based (it works!). Led by the Chilliwack Division of Family Practice, in partnership with SCOPE, an initiative of BC Children’s Hospital, we are working with community partners to make the healthy choice, the easy choice for children in the community.
