For people with severe mental health and substance use disorders, accessing health and support services can be a further challenge, with serious consequences. But by bringing those needed services to those who require them – at home, in shelters, camps or drop-in centres – more people

can receive help, when and where they need it. Abbotsford and Mission will soon have an Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) team, likely to be established by April 2015, with Fraser Health and the B.C. Ministry of Health each contributing $2 million. Surrey/ North Delta will also receive funding for a new team.

Stan Kuperis, Fraser Health’s director of clinical program mental health and substance use, will serve as the team’s director. He said they want to reach those with mental health and substance abuse issues, many of whom are homeless or at risk of homelessness and “do not readily engage with our existing … services.” Continued on A5

Evelyn Edwards might say that strong family ties are the secret to longevity. Or maybe it’s hot air ballooning in your 80s. Or learning to drive a snowmobile at your granddaughter’s wedding in Nunavut, at 89. Perhaps it’s water-tubing behind your son’s motorboat when you’re 92. Or maybe even, late in life, becoming a Canucks fan. Regardless, Abbotsford resident Evelyn Edwards (nee Toop) celebrated her 100th birthday on Dec. 5. Evelyn was born in Chilliwack in 1914 in a blizzard. “My mother was only 19; they had no car but dad had a horse. She was so lonely in the hospital that he faced the blizzard every day to come and see her. “One of the nurses was so

and she ended up marrying him!” Evelyn was the oldest of

five. Her father was a dairy farmer who settled along with his father and brothers (Chilliwack pioneers) on Sumas Prairie Road. Evelyn didn’t enjoy school, and stopped her studies at Grade 9. In her late teens, she went to a Valentine’s party with her boyfriend and caught a glimpse of a fellow named Roy. “Something clicked. He was a very clever guy, even though he had only a Grade 8 education,” Evelyn said. She was 21 when they were married on June 23, 1936. Roy worked at Buckerfield’s, and the couple bought some land in Chilliwack, and moved a small house from the adjacent property onto it. Continued on A4

Poultry barns at several Fraser Valley farms have gone quiet as officials work to quell an avian influenza outbreak that has prompted several countries, including the United States, to close their borders to local poultry products. The virus has now been found at five Fraser Valley farms – two which produce turkeys and three which produce broiler breeder chickens. Four of the farms are located in east Abbotsford, including a 66,000-bird turkey farm where the virus was discovered late last week. The other farm is in Chilliwack By the end of Monday, 80,000 birds at the first four farms had either already died from the highly pathogenic H5N2 strain, or been euthanized, with Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) workers expected to begin the process at the fifth farm midweek. restricted throughout southern British Columbia. Seven countries have now imposed restrictions on Canadian poultry, including the United States and Mexico. Other jurisdictions, including the European Union, require documentation certifying poultry comes from a country free of avian influenza, said Dr. Harpreet Kochhar, chief veterinary officer for the CFIA. A “primary control zone” encompassing all of B.C. south of Prince George, has been established. It requires a permit to move any bird from a site within the zone. A stricter “restricted zone” will be set up in the Lower Mainland, with a boundary up to 10 kilometres away from the infected barns, which are all located in eastern Abbotsford and western Chilliwack. Kochar said the restricted movement zones will help prevent the further spread of the virus and make it more likely that countries will open their borders to poultry from other parts of Canada. Industry representatives and health officials stress that avian influenza poses little danger to humans.

All five of their kids were born there. Evelyn relished motherhood. She was also known as a good cook, and resourcefully traded car and garage door repairs for butter tarts. Roy had a heart attack in his 50s and left his work at Buckerfield’s to become a chicken

farmer on Chilliwack Lake Road. They also enjoyed going south from time to time. Then, according to Evelyn, “we thought we’d try out curling, and liked it so much, we never went south again.” Roy became ill and passed away in 2001 at the age of 92. Evelyn moved into a Hallmark

retirement residence in Abbotsford, and quickly became known as “The Hockey Lady.” Three years ago, a Hallmark staff member knew someone with Canucks season tickets, and offered Evelyn the chance to attend a game together. At the game, Evelyn held up a sign that read, “97, and still waiting for the Cup.”

“I guess they saw the sign. We got to go downstairs and meet the team after the game. The “Hockey Lady” says she’s looking forward to attending a game with her granddaughter in mid-December. Evelyn celebrated her 100th birthday with a party at Hallmark on the Lake on Dec. 5.

Homeless back to park: Lawyers Advocates ask court to lift Jubilee injunction Alex BUTLER Abbotsford News

Lawyers for Pivot Legal Society, a non-profit legal group representing homeless people in Abbotsford, were in court on Friday arguing that an injunction against camping in Jubilee Park be dropped. In October 2013, a group of homeless people and members of the BC/Yukon Drug War Survivors set up a protest camp in Jubilee Park, stating they would stay in the park until solutions were found to address homelessness. The Drug War Survivors, a group that advocates for drug users and former users, has launched previous legal challenges related to the city’s bylaw against harm reduction services. The bylaw has since been repealed. The city issued an eviction notice for the camp in Jubilee Park

in late November 2013, but campers remained. The city asked the court for an injunction, which was granted on Dec. 20, 2013. At that time, Justice James Williams said the camp was impacting public use of the “community space” and this superseded the inconvenience of having the occupants move to another location. The campers then vacated the park and haven’t returned. Many of them relocated – and remain – on a narrow strip of city land along Gladys Avenue near Essendene Avenue. The injunction related only to Jubilee Park. The city’s application to enforce a ban on camping in all parks will be dealt with as part of a trial tentatively scheduled for June 2015, as Pivot lawyers have argued that the bylaws are unconstitutional. ACT will be able to provide support for about 100 people The ACT team intends for 75 per cent of its services to be mobile. The team will have nine clinical staff, made up of registered nurses, psychiatric nurses, social workers, a vocational rehabilitation worker, psychiatrists, addictions specialists, peer-support workers (people who have also experienced mental health issues) and health care workers, said Kuperis. When fully functional, it will have the capacity to support about 80 to 100 individuals in the Abbotsford/Mission program. In Abbotsford, where the issue of homelessness is an ongoing, high-profile concern, the announcement of the ACT Team is welcome news. Securing funding for an ACT team was identified as a key objective in the city’s task force on homelessness. Kuperis said some people on the streets have mental health or substance abuse issues that can hamper them from accessing housing.

Homeless back in park no solution Should the city’s homeless be allowed to move back into Jubilee Park, despite having been ordered out by the courts almost a year ago? Lawyers for Pivot Legal Society, a non-profit legal group representing homeless people in Abbotsford, were in court last Friday, arguing that the December 2013 injunction granted to the city to clear out the park should be lifted. No, it should not. The right decision was made at the time. This latest action squanders the court’s time and taxpayers’ money in legal response. Yes, the city has an obligation to work toward long-term solutions, and contrary to claims otherwise, important steps are finally being taken. While a proposed downtown low-barrier housing project failed to find council support earlier this year, another property in the area has since been rezoned for such a facility, and provincial funding is again being pursued. Acting on the recommendations of the homelessness task force, the city will hire a coordinator to focus on this critical issue. This week, funding for a local Assertive Community

Treatment (ACT) team was announced, which will bring support services to hard-to-reach people living with severe mental health and substance use disorders – in other words, many of the homeless. These initiatives and others actually address this complex issue. Merely moving a specific group of homeless back into a public park does nothing of the kind, other than to invite a repeat of the squalid eyesore that Jubilee became. The courts determined that camp was impacting public use of “community space” and this superseded the inconvenience of having the occupants move. They subsequently chose a narrow strip of city land along Gladys Avenue, which advocates now deem dangerous and crowded. Yet, they still refer to it as a protest camp, so at least some of the occupants have stayed to make a statement. Some have moved of their own accord, while others have accepted shelter options. The latter are often declined, according to out-reach workers. This city is on a long road to addressing homelessness. It doesn’t lead to a public park.

Other Hand With every keystroke to write this column I wait for the screen to go black, creating a prolonged “arrrggghhh” followed by a phone call to the editor explaining that due to power failure there is a need to fill this space with something else. On the other hand, if you are reading this, then the powerful winds rocking my house Tuesday morning left the local power grid unscathed, at least until after I hit ‘send.’ However, it is not only the wind that is remarkable as I write, but the temperature – hovering on 15 degrees but feeling markedly warmer in the gusts. And as long as the rain holds off, I’m happy with the “exterior heating” which no longer requires as part of my morning routine smashing ice in water troughs. The weather prognosticators have been

suggesting we are in for a mild winter thanks to the Pacific Ocean’s El Nino effect. I’m not certain if that can be credited with Tuesday’s mildness as much as it could be attributed to a “Pineapple Express” storm rocketing our way from Hawaiian waters. Regardless, the relative pleasantness of the weather is welcome during these latter days of fall. Since heating costs in my home are mollified by a roaring blaze in the fireplace, it is with trepidation that I approach the woodshed, my oversight in wood-gathering this year painfully obvious in the diminishing supply. If the weather forecasters are correct, a mild winter will reduce my consumption; if not, then for the first time I may actually have to purchase a load or two of seasoned firewood. Either way, it beats the price of heating oil, despite its cost having recently dropped substantially. What hasn’t dropped, however, is the cost of Christmas and the need to help those who don’t worry so much about running out of firewood as what to put on the table. Aside from the obvious homeless situation, there are literally hundreds of people and families for whom this time of year is one of sadness rather than joy,

when the cost of a Christmas gift has to be balanced against the price of food. Next time you visit Costco or the grocery store, pick up an extra case of canned goods or other non-perishable food product. Provide donation bins at your Christmas

And that action, I suggest, is a whole lot better than simply buying something you think might be wanted instead of giving what is needed. Not much point in buying a case of cranberry sauce if there are no turkeys on the table. Just remember that money is no measure of a person’s worth, and regardless of their financial ability, they and their families are the same as everyone else in their hopes and dreams. So please, take a minute to consider how much you enjoy being with your friends and families this time of year, and try to help those in need experience a similar joy this season.

Multi-Material BC (MMBC) is an industry-led, nonprofit agency that assumed responsibility for residential curbside, multi-family, and depot recycling programs in many areas across B.C. in May 2014 as a result of changes made to the provincial Recycling Regulation to shift responsibility for end-of-life management of packaging and printed paper from governments and their taxpayers to the businesses that produce these materials. MMBC does not fall under the purview of the provincial Auditor General because MMBC was neither created nor appointed by the B.C. government and MMBC is not funded by the B.C. government or taxpayers. MMBC is accountable to the commitments made in its stewardship plan approved by the ministry of environment, and will issue a third-party audited annual report by July 1, 2015. In terms of the programâ€™s success, over 1,000 companies have now signed onto MMBC as stewards, and the fees that stewards pay have allowed MMBC to provide recycling services to over 1.25 million British Columbian households. At the same time, MMBC has standardized the materials accepted for recycling and added many materials that previously were excluded from residential recycling programs, including empty aerosol containers, plastic foam packaging, plastic plant pots, paper coffee cups, plastic or paper cold drink cups, and milk cartons. MMBC already has over 70 collectors on a waiting list to be included in our program and will expand to more communities as additional businesses join and their added fees increase the funds available to finance program expansion. Fed up with whistles Am I the only citizen of Abbotsford fed up with the loud whistles and increased train traffic through Abbotsford? When I lived in Mission, we found out that the whistles were not necessary but only because the conductor of the train wanted people to know they were passing through. The whistles were banned. We are not living in the 19th century. We have enough noise and stress in our lives. We don’t need lonely conductors blasting away our peace and quiet. I would like to see an end to the extra trains that were only supposed to run through Abbotsford until October and have been extended to December. Just like taxes, once they are permitted, they never end. Also, the regulation amount of whistles at crossings is all that should be permitted, if not banned altogether. I know that some trains whistle while they are in the crossing. By then it is too late to be a warning any longer. I am at the point of moving from Abbotsford because of the irresponsible permission of trains and whistles by city council. Dawn Emile

When Abbotsford resident Kim Moran received her diagnosis, she had just turned 30, received a promotion at her job at a private college, and was training to run a half-marathon. She was blindsided by the news she received on Nov. 10 – she had multiple sclerosis (MS), a disorder of the central nervous system that currently does not have a cure. But despite the news, Moran said she is determined not to let it slow her down. She even decided to raise awareness by posting her story on social media sites Instagram and Facebook. A social media campaign #stopdropselfieforMS – is based on the premise that MS is an unpredictable disease that sometimes “stops you in your tracks.” When a person is nominated they stop and take a selfie

Inspired by the campaign, Moran posted her photo and wrote a caption, explaining her own experience and helping to put a face to the disease. “I never thought in a million year I’d ever write this post, but

She added that while there is no cure, there is a new drug called Lemtrada, which Moran said her neurologist described it as “the closest thing we’ve ever had to a cure.” While the drug is only needed for 12 months, it costs about $80,000 and is not currently funded by B.C. Fair Pharmacare, she said. Moran said she would love to see that change, as it is heartbreaking knowing it is inaccessible because of finances, and “I’m sure many other young Canadians feel the same heartbreak.” Moran’s original posts have started to spread and her message is gaining a greater reach. “When you post a selfie, also take a second to pray for a cure and maybe even donate!”

Two Abbotsford firefighters who saved the life of their hockey teammate will be honoured before council next week. Abbotsford firefighters Kirk Holt and Ed Griffioen revived their teammate Lindsay Hickmott in early November after he went into cardiac arrest and stopped breathing during a game at Centre Ice. After triple bypass surgery, Hickmott is now on the road to recovery and doctors say he will be able to play hockey again. victim. “It’s an incredible tool to have for 9-1-1 dispatchers and the general public,” said Shelley Parker of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Dispatchers, she said, “already do great coaching with regards to CPR and this is the next step.” Parker noted that the chance of survival increases significantly if heart attack victims re-

ceive CPR quickly and assistance from a defibrillator in the first few minutes. And while fire crews and paramedics carry the devices, in the event of a delayed response, every second counts. An online version of the list, which Parker said is in its infancy, currently shows five defibrillator locations in Abbotsford – at Abbotsford City Hall, at the Fraser Valley Trout Hatchery, at The Reach Gallery Museum, and at two London Drugs location. Those who register for the list can choose to make their AED’s location publicly available or visible only to 9-1-1 dispatchers for use in case of emergency. Parker also encouraged individuals who own AED’s to register, noting that the device could save the life of a neighbour.

Surgical waits average 5 months in B.C. Jeff NAGEL Black Press

A new report by the Fraser Institute criticizes long waits for surgery in B.C. and accuses the province of routinely underestimating the wait times it publishes on its website. B.C. patients wait an average of five months for medically necessary elective surgery, according to the annual report by the think tank. It shows the average patient waits 9.5 weeks once referred by a GP until they see a specialist and then another 11.6 weeks from the specialist appointment to surgery. The wait to see the specialist was unchanged in 2014 from 2013, but the wait from specialist to surgery increased slightly from 10.4 weeks a year ago, according to the report. And the overall wait of 21.1 weeks has more than doubled since 1993. The study examined a wide range of procedures and averaged the wait times. Orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery and plastic surgery had the longest wait times nationally, while medical or radiation oncology had average waits of four weeks or less because cancer patients get high priority. Fraser Institute economist and report lead author Bacchus Barua said the wait times for treatment are “unacceptably high” despite high levels of

health care spending. The findings also show B.C. patients are now waiting longer than they did two years ago for various diagnostic procedures. MRI waits have risen most dramatically, from 12 weeks in 2012 to 20 weeks this year – the longest in Canada – while CT scan and ultrasound waits both rose from four to five weeks over the same period. B.C.’s health ministry publishes estimated wait times on its website, but the report argues those numbers are “inaccurate.” It says the 11.1-week wait time claimed by the ministry for orthopedic surgery as of this spring is mathematically impossible given the number of patients waiting in B.C. then and how fast surgeries were being done, suggesting the real wait would be 16 to 24 weeks longer. “Specialty by specialty, month in and month out, the median wait figures reported by the ministry remain consistently, and surprisingly, lower than expected given the number of patients waiting and the number of procedures can reasonably be expected to be performed per week.” The disparity between the government’s wait times and Fraser Health’s estimates is in part because the province only counts the wait for surgery as beginning when the hospital receives the operating room

booking. The Fraser Institute says that method understates the actual wait because some hospitals only take bookings a few months ahead – wiping longer waits off the official statistics – and excludes any delay between the decision to treat a patient and the formal booking. Health ministry spokesperson Kristy Anderson said the Fraser Institute survey is based on personal opinion rather than hard clinical data because it relies on surveys of doctors. “We do recognize the challenge,” she said. “Despite increasing the number of surgeries and diagnostic exams, B.C. is facing unprecedented demand for health care services – putting pressure on our wait lists.” B.C.’s total surgical wait is above the national average of 18.2 weeks, according to the study. Patients wait as little as 14 weeks in Saskatchewan and Ontario, but more than 30 weeks in the Maritime provinces. Barua said potential models for wait time reform include other countries with universal health care systems such as Switzerland, the Netherlands and Australia that also offer a parallel private system catering to those who can pay extra. “Simply putting someone on a list is not the same as providing necessary medical care in a timely manner.”

The holiday season is a time when there is an increased risk of home fires as Christmas trees, candle usage and holiday decorations can all contribute to seasonal blazes. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Services (AFRS) are reminding residents that with added awareness and some minor adjustments to holiday cooking and decorating, the season can remain festive and safe for everybody. The Holiday Wreath will be up at Fire Hall No. 1 (32270 George Ferguson Way) with 31 green lights representing the 31 days in December. The goal is to “Keep the Wreath Green” for the entire month. If a green light is replaced with a red light it will be due to a preventable residential fire occurring. Residents are re-

minded to stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling or broiling food. Most cooking fires involve the stovetop, so keep anything that can catch fire away from it, and turn off the stove when you leave the kitchen, even if it’s for a short period of time. December is the peak month for home candle fires. Flameless candles are an alternate to open flames inside the house. Traditional candles should be kept at least 12 inches away from anything flammable, and blown out when you leave the room or go to bed. Each year, fire departments respond to fires caused by Christmas trees. One of every three is caused by electrical problems, and one in five result from a heat source too close to the tree. Q If you have an ar-

tificial tree, be sure it’s labeled, certified or identified by the manufacturer as fireretardant. Q If you choose a fresh tree, make sure the green needles don’t fall off when touched; and before placing it in the stand, cut 1-2” from the base of the trunk. Add water to the tree stand, and be sure to water it daily. Q Make sure the tree is not blocking an exit, and is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, space heaters, radiators, candles and heat vents or lights. Q Use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory, and make sure you know whether they are designed for indoor or outdoor use. Q Replace any string of lights with worn or broken cords, or loose

bulb connections. Connect no more than three strands of ministring sets and a maximum of 50 bulbs for screw-in bulbs. Q Never use lit candles to decorate the tree. Q Always turn off Christmas tree lights before leaving the home or going to bed. Q After Christmas, get rid of the tree. Dried-out trees are a fire hazard and should not be left in the home or garage, or placed outside the home. Q Bring outdoor electrical lights inside after the holidays to prevent hazards and make them last longer. By following these fire prevention tips and measures, residents can greatly reduce the risk of fires in households and enjoy a safe holiday season.

Return-It School recycling program opens up a world of possibilities

ith the end of 2014 just around the corner, Encorp Pacific (Canada) is reminding schools in British Columbia that there is still time to enroll in the Return-It School program. T he Ret ur n-It School recycling program started in 2000 and provides schools with the tools and support to implement or improve beverage container recycling programs. It is offered free to any registered elementary, middle or high school in British Columbia. As Joanne Drew from Windsor Secondary in North Vancouver explains, the ReturnIt School program is about more than just recycling beverage containers.

Her school has been involved for the past nine years. With the program, special needs students learn valuable life skills by participating in various community activities. “Our students learn practical life skills like learning how to communicate and fundraise by holding community bottle drives and handing out flyers. We use the extra resources to provide fun and interactive experiences for them so they learn to do everyday tasks. We take these everyday activities for granted but for these students, they are important lessons that impact their future.” The staff at Yale Secondary in Abbotsford couldn’t agree

more. Resource teacher Jim Heinrichs points out that all the deposit refunds go back into their special needs program. This gives them additional resources and freedom to provide more enrichment activities. “Not only do our students benefit by learning useful work and life skills, they also get to participate in more recreational outings like going to a farm, interacting with neighbours and also giving back to the community through charities. Nativity Drive-Through at church Final year of annual display that has run for 24 years After 24 years, HillCity Church (formerly Abbotsford Christian Assembly) will hold its final Nativity DriveThrough next week. The event runs from 6 to 10 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11 and Friday, Dec. 12 at the church, at 3970 Gladwin Rd.

There are 11 outdoor scenes portraying the Christmas story with live animals, lights, and actors dressed as Mary and Joseph, angels, wise men and shepherds. The scenes are bathed in the light of Abbotsford’s largest decorated Christmas tree,

along with Christmas music. The public views the scenes from the comfort of their vehicles, and usually about 1,000 cars stop by. Admission is free, and donations are gratefully accepted for the Abbotsford Food Bank and the Salvation Army.

During this holiday season and all year long, please remember that it’s never cool to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Enjoy your time with family and friends, celebrate responsibly and make it home in time for Santa.

much construction in Surrey happens on land that has never before been developed. “If you open up a greenfield development there are a lot of costs – laying pipe, building roads and creating parks,” de Wit said. “We understand there’s a need to have development charges to pay for growth. What we really care about are the delays and inconsistent application of rules across cities and even within cities.” Among the recommended reforms are improved municipal websites for developers, good online file access and mobile technology to allow city staff to update information on a development from the field. Jean Lamontagne, Surrey’s GM of planning and development, said real-time updates from city inspectors using mobile devices can help avoid delays for builders. Instead of waiting to

return to the office to enter the data, comments from an inspector are instantly circulated to the client’s team, who can move faster to address problems. “The report really brings together best practices from around the region,” Lamontagne said, adding SFU’s involvement ensured it was fair and impartial. As for Surrey’s higher costs, Lamontagne said council has always insisted developers pay for the costs to service new neighbourhoods, not existing taxpayers, adding housing in Surrey remains more affordable than Vancouver. The report acknowledges major challenges facing cities – from neighbours hostile to development, intense pressure to keep pace with growth, as well as inexperienced builders who don’t always know what they’re doing. “Some builders and

developers submit incomplete applications to get into the queue,” de Wit said. “That delays the whole process for everybody. So that’s something our industry can do better.” One of the reforms the

GVHBA recommends is a fast lane for professional builders with a good track record to expedite their projects. Other ideas include approving development permits simultaneously with a council rezoning

decision – as happens in Surrey – and preapplication meetings to ensure builders know their requirements at the outset. Getting To Groundbreaking is expected to be an annual study, with the

focus shifting from townhomes to apartments and houses in future years. Three cities – Burnaby, New Westminster and Langley City – did not participate in the study. De Wit said this year’s

analysis was less relevant in those areas because of the focus on townhouses, which make up 20 to 30 per cent of new housing units in the Tri Cities, Surrey, Maple Ridge and Langley Township.

The Abbotsford Panthers junior football team cruised their way to the Double-A finals this year by conducting a series of post-season pummelings. The Panthers beat Frank Hurt by 34, Robert Bateman by 28, and Ballenas by 39, but didn’t lead for a moment in Saturday’s Subway Bowl against the GW Graham Grizzlies. The Panthers fell 23-13 to the Grizzlies despite beating the Chilliwack squad 28-22 on Oct. 17. Both games were similar in execution, but this time, with a season championship on the line, it was the Grizzlies who made the important plays late to secure the victory. Christmas comes early for Virtanen Abby hockey star gets invite to world junior camp

Jake Virtanen got the call around 9 p.m. the night before the Canadian national junior hockey team selection camp roster was officially unveiled. It was Canadian head coach Benoît Groulx on the phone. The coach informed Virtanen, 18, that his name was on that list of 29 invitees. It was a huge moment in his hockey career. But the young forward would have to wait until Hockey Canada officially unveiled the team roster at a press conference the next morning — Dec. 1 — to share his exciting news. “I know you want to tell everybody, you know your family and friends. I tried to keep it a surprise. I told my parents but that’s about it — just try and keep it a surprise and let Hockey Canada announce it,” Virtanen said during a media scrum in Calgary last Monday. Virtanen, a first-round pick of the Vancouver Canucks at the 2014 NHL draft who plays for the Western Hockey League’s Calgary Hitmen, underwent offseason shoulder surgery so he wasn’t able to actively participate during the junior team’s summer development camp. But Virtanen’s solid start to the WHL season (nine goals and 14 assists, in 20 games) and strong showing at the Subway Series in October against the

During their phone conversation, the coach told Virtanen he was impressed by his performance at the Subway Series, which was the first time he’d seen him play live. “So I think he was really happy with my play there,” Virtanen told reporters. “I just definitely have to show him at camp that I’m the kind of guy who is willing to do anything to be on the team,” said Virtanen, who has twice represented Canada at the World U18 Hockey Championships. Of the 29 players invited to the camp, which begins in Toronto on Dec. 11, 22 will make the team. This year’s IIHF World Junior Championship is being hosted in Toronto and

Montreal. Team Canada will kick off the tourney with a game against Slovakia in Montreal on Boxing Day. Like many hockey-crazy kids growing up in Canada, Virtanen usually spent the holiday season glued to the tube watching the world junior championships, which runs from Dec. 26 to Jan. 5. “I loved watching it when I was younger. I remember that [Jordan] Eberle and [John] Tavares team was unbelievable and that kind of memory sticks in my mind of how good they were,” he said. “I definitely want it to be like that again, especially on home soil here in Toronto and Montreal. I definitely want to make the team and make Canada proud.” Virtanen’s mother Brigitte, who just returned from visiting her son in Calgary on the weekend, knows that if her son earns a spot on the team he won’t be home for Christmas. While she says it would be sad if he didn’t make it back to Abbotsford, the family could always celebrate later. “I think it’s worth it,” she said. And if her son is decked out in a red and white jersey over the holidays, she and husband Rainer plan to fly east to watch him play.

Double-wing downs Mission Roadrunners fail to repeat 2011 Subway Bowl

The Bulldogs had Jesse Walker’s number all game long.

The Mission Roadrunners have been a Double-A powerhouse all season long, but on Saturday they were mystified by the John Barsby Bulldog’s double-wing offence for just a few minutes too long in a 36-20 loss to the Victoria Island squad. The Bulldogs, who were vying for their second straight AA provincial championship, pounded the ball through the middle in the first quarter, gaining yardage on almost every play and scoring two majors. found success on the ground and the Roadrunners couldn’t manage a first down. In the second quarter Mission put together a solid drive built on lateral passes, trying to spread the field. The ‘Runners quarterback Jesse Walker ran the final play in for a touchdown, and the two teams entered halftime with Barsby leading 24-7. “I knew every play they were going to run by their alignment, and our boys did too,” said Mission coach Danny Jakobs, “but that means nothing if you’re going to get pushed around and I thought

we got pushed around a little bit.” While the Bulldogs swarmed Walker, the 2014 Double-A Player of the Year, on almost every play, Jakobs was proud of his slotbacks Inder Herr and Reilly Demarco for capitalizing on the resulting defensive holes. “They brought everybody against me,” said Walker ruefully after the game. “I had to throw the ball and made some plays, but you can’t make every play.” The game was a repeat of the 2011 Subway Bowl final, which Mission won 16-12.

Diane enjoyed music, camping (especially bundled up evenings around the campfire) and cooking elaborate dinners for her family and friends.
