MEDICAL MARIJUANA
Parksville pot plant? Industrial park land may be site of production facility CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com
The grass might be greener on the other side of the border for Wildflower Marijuana. Parksville’s CAO Fred Manson has confirmed the city is “in negotiations” with Wildflower Marijuana, but he insisted nothing has been finalized. The Vancouver-based company may be setting up a medical pot operation in the heart of Parksville’s industrial park — if they get the green light from Health Canada. Wildflower Marijuana is best known in this area for its recent attempt to set up a medical pot operation near the River’s Edge neighbourhood in Nanoose Bay, just over the municipal border from Parksville. River’s Edge residents organized quickly and loudly to oppose the project. The company posted a news release on its website Dec. 3 stating “Wildflower Marijuana Inc. is pleased to announce that it has come to terms on an agreement with a local British Columbia municipality to set up a medical marijuana growing facility within its jurisdiction.” The statement didn’t name a specific municipality. Manson told The NEWS city officials have been in conversation with Wildflower about a medical pot operation for several months. Wildflower’s news release said that “the city will not only allow for an (medical marijuana grow-op) application within its jurisdiction, but will also provide cityowned land to build the growing facility.” Manson said, assuming this project goes ahead, the grow operation would be located within a 20-acre parcel of land purchased by the city two years ago for the Englishmen River Water Service that sits behind the city’s public works yard. Oceanside Elementary School students cross the street at the intersection of the Island Highway and Wright Road. A parent of two OES students said her daughters have nearly been hit by cars three times in the past two weeks. While there are traffic lights at the intersection, there is no crossing guard.

Children put in harm’s way JESSICA SKELTON

Two sisters who attend Oceanside Elementary School have nearly been hit three times over the past two weeks while crossing the Island Highway at Wright Road, said their mother Tammy Milne. “It’s essentially children crossing a freeway,” said the French Creek resident. The girls, one in Grade 3 and the other in Grade 5, were nearly hit once by someone talking on a cell phone
and twice by people not using the yield lane to turn right. There is no crossing guard at the intersection. “All those are driver errors,” School District assistant superintendent Gillian Wilson said last week of the incidents. However, she also said the school board has identified OES as having issues with traffic. At the Nov. 25 school board meeting Superintendent Rollie Koop said he and Secretary Treasurer Erica Bailey reviewed those issues with the
RCMP, RDN and Ministry of Transportation. So far, he said the school board was working with the RDN on safe walk routes and that the new subdivision across from the school will create “a number of other corridors of access and drop off points” once opened. The intersection in question is under the jurisdiction of Ministry of Transportation, not the school board or the RDN. See PARENTAL PATROLS, page A7

Lounge morning man died Saturday at 67
Local radio personality Patrick Nicholson died over the weekend after a year-long battle with cancer. Nicholson was 67 years old. He was the morning man on The Lounge since it signed on the air in 2005. Nicholson passed away just after noon on Saturday, with his wife Darlene Haynes at his side. According to friend and fellow DJ David Graham, Nicholson did not want a service and plans are being made for a celebration of his life in January. Nicholson, who often gave his services as a DJ away to help local community organizations, is also survived by his four children. — NEWS Staff
Police converge on Ford Street house
Police were called to a home at the end of Ford Street in Parksville Wednesday night after “witnesses heard smashing glass and screaming coming from the residence,” according to Oceanside RCMP. Cpl. Jesse Foreman said when Mounties arrived at the scene at 9:30 p.m. there appeared to have been an altercation between a 23-year-old man and 28-year-old woman, who live at the residence, and two unidentified men. Foreman confirmed this incident is “not a home invasion.” He said police are investigating the suspects and what type of motive they may have had. On Thursday morning, the residence was cordoned off with police tape, RCMP were investigating the scene and the home’s front window was shattered. As of Monday morning, there were no arrests. — Candace Wu

More than 7,500 come to the you-cut Christmas tree farm near Whiskey Creek each year, taking home approximately 1,500 trees. Mica Verbrugge said he has an agreement with the Ministry of Forests and BC Hydro to run the operation each year. Verbrugge is donating 10 per cent of his profits this year to Island food banks. To get to the area, take a right on Melrose Road off Alberni Highway and follow the signs. Milner Gardens & Woodland is literally lighting up the night with their annual Christmas Magic event, which opened Dec. 5 and runs select nights throughout the month. “I’d say we’re getting upwards of 70,000 lights,” said Geoff Ball, Executive Director of Milner Gardens & Woodland, to The NEWS last week. The shining Christmas lights and holiday displays were set up by a team of volunteers and staff, who Ball said have “chipped away” at the project since September. But the lights aren’t the only attraction at Christmas Magic.
According to a news release from Milner Gardens, there is also storytelling, a teddy bear cottage and Santa Claus himself to delight the crowds. Ball said music plays a big part of the event as well, with a diverse range of groups coming from around the region to perform. “It’s a fun place to sing Christmas songs,” he said. Milner Christmas Magic runs Dec. 12-14 and 17-21 from 5-8:30 p.m. each evening. Recommended last entry is 8 p.m. For more information, call 250-752-6153. Read the full story ONLINE at www.pqbnews.com
Toy shop always has a need for items for teens CONTINUED FROM PAGE A3
“It truly is a wonderful feeling.” Elaine Eddy is another volunteer designated as a Toy Shop Chairperson at SOS again this year. She said there is a real joy that encircles the Toy Shop, from the baking families enjoy while waiting for their turn to enter, to the decorations surrounding the shop. “It has an atmosphere of happiness when they walk in the door,” Holkestad said. The SOS Caring for Kids at Christmas Program is available for parents, caregivers and grandparents to access a gift for a child, and it also helps individuals with grocery store gift cards so they can look forward to sharing a special meal over the holidays. To make a contribution to the program, bring in a new, unwrapped toy to the SOS Office at 245 West Hirst Avenue in Parksville, Monday through Fri-
day, 8:30-4:30 p.m. Cash donations can be made online at www.sosd69.com, by phone, 250-248-2093, or in person. The SOS collects toys for the program year-round, and as Christmas approaches, two big events help ensure the Toy Shop is stacked with gifts: the Silver Spur Toy Ride and the Tigh-Na-Mara Toy Drive. The SOS Angel Tree Program also helps the SOS get those gifts that the Toy Shop consistently needs. This year, 38 local businesses and outlets have signed up to host a tree adorned with SOS Angels. On the back of those ornaments are suggested gifts that have been identified as in-demand in the Toy Shop. Find a list of businesses with SOS Angel Trees on the SOS website. A number of other local groups and businesses also assist the SOS in providing gifts and grocery store gift cards for residents in-need at Christmas time.

Holkestad said she enjoys working in the Toy Shop, particularly when she gets to help people find that special gift they know their child will love. Eddy agreed, recalling last year when a family with four children was able to get a bike. “You knew that bike was going to be well-used,” she said. The Toy Shop can always use items for teens, as they usually run out of these items first. Eddy said last year, after taking a number of parents through the Toy Shop to select gifts, they ran out of books, and were particularly short on books for teens. Holkestad said she hopes this year there will be some more items for parents of teens. “I always feel really badly taking people in with a teenager, because I’m thinking, Oh there’s not a lot left in there for teenagers. Sometimes there are gift cards, but I just wish there were more for teens and

Both ladies said their volunteer jobs at the SOS are rewarding, they enjoy giving back to the community, and they both like to work with other excited volunteers who are looking to help spread joy. “I want to thank the SOS for doing so much for community and for allowing us to come and volunteer,” said Holkestad. Eddy agreed, and said she’s looking forward to interacting with SOS clients this year. “Its fun to see these parents get excited about gifts for their children, and the caring that went into getting those gifts here.” For more information on the SOS and the Caring for Kids at Christmas Program visit www.sosd69.com.

New Council Gets to Work Parksville’s new Council for the term December 1, 2014, to November 5, 2018, was sworn in at the inaugural meeting last week. Over the next few months, Parksville’s Council will be involved in comprehensive orientation, budget and governance sessions. Regular Council meetings will be held December 15 and January 19. Contact information for new Council members as well as appointments to committees, boards, commissions and associations from December 1, 2014, to December 7, 2015, was approved and Councillors Al Greir, Mary Beil, Leanne Salter, Sue Powell, Teresa Patterson, posted to the website [City Hall/Mayor and Council]. Kirk Oates with Mayor Marc Lefebvre Mayor Lefebvre’s inaugural remarks are also on the web. A schedule of regular Council meetings for 2015 is on the notice board at the Parksville Civic and Technology Centre and on the website calendar. The popular Coffee with Council starts again on January 8 from 2-4 pm at City Hall.
City Services
We’re Ready for Snow… Are You? City staff monitor road and weather conditions 24/7 during winter months. When snow and icy conditions are forecast, crews and equipment are prepped and when it snows, crews are dispatched to keep roads safe. The City’s first priority during and after a snowfall is to clear major arterial streets (such as Island Highway, Alberni Highway) as well as access to emergency services (RCMP, fire hall, ambulance station). Clearing collector streets (such as Temple, Pym, Hirst) is the second priority. Once conditions have stabilized on priority routes, crews will begin to clear residential streets. Should snowfall continue, crews may take longer to reach residential streets. If there is an emergency on your street, call 911 and emergency services will advise the City to send a plow immediately. Clearing of sidewalks is the responsibility of property owners. The owner / occupier is responsible under Traffic Bylaw 1436 to remove all snow or ice from all sidewalks bordering their property within 12 hours of the end of the snowfall. During periods of heavy snowfall and during regular hours of operation, City crews will support public clearing of sidewalks on streets with high pedestrian traffic, such as arterials and roads in the downtown core. To learn more about snow removal, what you can do to help and how best to prepare, refer to the City’s website [Quicklink Winter Conditions].
Notice to Businesses Existing business licence holders may now renew for the 2015 calendar year. Fees are due by January 30 and may be mailed or paid at City Hall. Bylaw 1483 requires that all businesses obtain a valid licence if carrying on business in the City. More information may be found on the website [Business/Licences].
Successful PVFD Food and Toy Drive The annual food and toy drive held in November was once again, a huge success thanks to the generosity of our residents and the hard work of many members and volunteers. A total of 23,300 pounds of food was collected along with cash donations of $5,000.
Holiday Hours City Hall and public works will close at 1 pm on December 24 and remain closed all day December 25, December 26 and January 1. For after-hours public works emergency, call 250 248-6144 (4 pm to 8 am, Monday to Friday, weekends and holidays).
City Dates
Island Highway East snow closures – should there be significant snowfall, one lane of Island Highway East (Highway 19A) between Corfield and McCarter Streets will be closed to allow safe use of the slope from Island Highway into the Community Park sports field for tobogganing. Traffic control measures will facilitate the temporary lane closure.
Notice to Dog Owners in Parksville Dog licence fees are due by January 30, 2015. Current dog licences will receive a reminder notice; if you do not receive a notice and/or currently own a dog, licences may be purchased from City Hall. • By January 30, Spayed/neutered $20; not spayed/neutered $30 • After January 30, Spayed/neutered $25; not spayed/neutered $35
New Planning Info Brochures
The main benefit of licencing is the quick return of dogs should they become lost. As well, the fees collected partially offset the cost to maintain our off-leash dog park, provide doggie bags and dispensers throughout the City and provide bylaw enforcement to handle public safety concerns of stray, off-leash and dangerous dogs.
Planning department information brochures are now available at the planning department counter at City Hall and on the City’s website in PDF. Topics such as affordable housing, mobile food vending, secondary suites, setback requirements, development cost charges and managing urban wildlife conflicts are just a few of the topics covered in these new brochures. [City Hall/Community Planning/Information Brochures].
And, it’s the law! Bylaw 1284 states, “no person shall keep, harbour or have in his possession any dog over the age of six months unless a valid and subsisting licence has been issued in respect of that dog.” The bylaw also states no more than two dogs may be kept on parcels of land less than two acres.

PARKSVILLE’S NEED FOR A NEW WATER TREATMENT FACILITY
Residents want a meeting Final decision not expected until May JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com
The Parksville Residents’ Association is asking the new city council for a town-hall style meeting about the plan for a new water treatment plant. And it wants the meeting to happen before Jan. 31, 2015. Association vice-president Al Pastars sent the request to Mayor Marc Lefebvre and all councillors. He sent a copy of his request to The NEWS.
“During the election, the Parksville Residents’ Association asked all candidates to indicate whether, if elected, if they would call for an open meeting regarding the current planned water treatment plant,” Pastars wrote in his request. “All successful councillor candidates indicated their agreement. The residents association is asking for a town-hall style of open meeting with only one agenda item — the water treatment plant. A town hall format encourages more interaction by residents than does an open-house presentation by the Englishman River Water Service
(ERWS), which is a top-down information session that explains the project from the ERWS point of view to the exclusion of others . . . there are now opportunities for considerable back and forth discussion. Please do not fall into a situation of waiting to get public feedback closer to decision time as that could result in rushed rash decisions supporting only one set of views.” When reached by phone on Monday, Pastars was asked why the PRA believes it needs this meeting. “Right now it’s very secretive,” he said of the plant proposal.

He also said a medical pot facility comes with economic perks for the city. “Right now the property is municipally-owned so it’s exempt from all taxation,” said Manson, adding that if a medical marijuana operation were to be built, the value of the land would become taxable, along with all the improvements carried out by Wildflower. “And of course, all the jobs that come along with it.” Parksville Mayor Marc Lefebvre declined to comment on the matter. In September, River’s Edge resident Lehann Wallace, who appears to be leading the movement against Wildflower’s proposal to set up shop near River’s Edge, hand delivered a petition with more than 300 signatures on it to Regional District of Nanaimo officials. The River’s Edge community voiced
concerns over the facility’s access points increasing traffic in the otherwise private neighbourhood, aquifer issues, groundwater contamination, environmental sustainability and security issues. RDN director Joe Stanhope, who represents the area, pledged his support to the River’s Edge residents and wrote a letter to Health Canada opposing the company’s intentions. Manson said the negative media attention drummed up by the River’s Edge community “had something to do with” the city’s interest in Wildflower’s project. Wildflower Marijuana CEO William MacLean told The NEWS Saturday morning that the company was “actively pursued” by the municipality. “It was based on them (Parksville) contacting us (Wildflower) to explore possibilities,” said MacLean from Van-
couver. “We are very excited about what we have on the go right now.” MacLean confirmed Wildflower Marijuana has not revoked any of their Health Canada licence applications, including the River’s Edge one. He said a third application for the Parksville location has not yet been submitted to Health Canada, but “terms have been agreed upon” between the company and the city. He said there are “small hoops” that need to be jumped through before a submission will be made. Health Canada has 14 licensed producers who are authorized to produce and sell dried marijuana in Canada. Wildflower Marijuana is not currently one of them. It is unclear whether Wildflower Marijuana is able to transfer its application for the Parksville location from the River’s Edge location, or if it is required to submit a new application.
Parental patrols an ‘antiquated’ option CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1
RDN chair and French Creek resident Joe Stanhope said he has already written a letter to the ministry explaining the issues around Wembley Road. Milne also said she has spoken with the police regarding the incidents.RCMP Cpl. Jesse Foreman, who did not know the specifics of Milne’s complaint, said a Municipal Traffic Officer’s job is to look into reccurring traffic complaints. He was not able to
provide any specifics about this file. The issue is on the agenda for tonight’s OES Parent Advisory Committee meeting. It was added by Milne, a member of the PAC. In particular, she said she’s looking for parent volunteers to “be that set of eyes” and help kids cross the intersection. “We need to be proactive,” she said. This comes after Koop said at the school board meeting on Nov. 25 that
they “bypassed” the idea of having school patrols by older students and parents, saying it’s an “antiquated” option. “Neither parents nor students have any authority to control traffic,” he said. “Putting folks out there … it’s putting them in harm’s way.” For the time being, Milne said she had changed her work schedule so her girls cross the intersection fewer times each week.

Rebates may be available for woodstove purchases The Regional District of Nanaimo offers a $250 rebate to electoral area residents upon proof that a used, non-certified wood burning appliance has been replaced with a new EPA or CSA certified wood burning, pellet or gas stove, and that the old woodstove has been rendered permanently inoperable. Residents must have purchased their new stove after Oct. 1, 2014 to be eligible for the rebate. Rebates will soon become available for residents in Parks-

B.C.’s leaky roof
T
he analogy is appropriate, but it needs to be taken a step further. In a year-end interview with Black Press’ Tom Fletcher, Premier Christie Clark tried to compare her government’s finances to that of any household. Repeating the words she and her finance minister spoke earlier in the week, the premier suggested a family that has rode through tough times using credit cards needs to put money on those cards when the finances improve. She was speaking of the government’s estimated $444 million surplus and her plan to put that money toward B.C.’s debt. We agree that is a prudent strategy. It is irresponsible to ignore the debt. It’s almost criminal to burden future governments and future generations with such a financial millstone. However, we don’t believe the entire $400 million needs to go to paying down the debt. Let’s continue with the premier’s fictitious family. When times are tough and you are living off credit cards, many things around the house fall into disrepair. The plumbing, the electrical, perhaps the roof. Yes, you can get by for a while without these things being fixed. They can be put off until finances improve. But when the money situation gets better, it makes sense to not only put some cash down on the credit cards, but fix the roof. A leaky and/or old roof is just going to cause more expensive problems down the road if it’s not upgraded. The B.C. government has a bunch of leaky roofs. It’s time to take a quarter, a third or even half of that $444 million to fix some of these problems around its house. There is no shortage of suggestions for what to do with some of this money. Ask the NDP for ideas — they are very good at spending taxpayers’ money. When times were tougher, maybe it made sense to hike medical premiums and claw back child support payments from social assistance and disability recipients. Perhaps it was prudent to increase ferry rates and cut some of that service. However, we are seeing some of the results of these cuts, especially in regards to the ferry service. Those measures have caused damage to the economy. Sure, Premier Clark, pay down that credit card debt. But fix the roof first. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters PAY IT FORWARD
It seems like genuine good deeds are hard to come by these days but I recently saw something that I had to share. A young man was picking up a prescription and when told it wasn’t covered he explained that he didn’t have the funds to pay for it and had no way of getting the money. A young woman and her husband walked up to the man and with smiles on their faces gave him money to pay for it all and even gave him the change that was leftover. They both told him to pass it along when he has the opportunity to do so. It put a smile on my face, so thank you to that couple should you read this, you made my day. I admire you greatly. CLARION HANGOVER
The municipal elections being over, I was hoping to relax a little and enjoy the Christmas season. This delusion was short-lived, however, when I was jolted back to reality by the horrific spectacle presented to us on Page A7 of your Dec. 4 issue. I refer obviously to the ominous artist’s depiction of The Clarion building looming into the sky. This style of architecture can only be described as Soviet Industrial 1954. It is absurdly unsuited to this town or indeed this age. Let me say that I believe it is a good thing that the ground will finally be broken in the ugly vacant lot adjacent to the town hall. It is a good thing that the policy of infill is being pursued in the centre of town. It is a

policy for a “minor” amendment; • and it was an application based on an OCP review of questionable quality in terms of scope and community involvement. The Nov. 15 election result is exactly “the point.” I believe three elected councillors ignored public input and took a course of action based on a legal opinion. The councillors misjudged public opinion, failed to convince residents that their proposal was good for the town and suffered in the election results. Qualicum Beach was fortunate to have the RDN board take a measured look at a misguided attempt by members of Qualicum Beach council. In this case, the relationship between the town and the RDN functioned as intended by both parties. It will be refreshing to read editorials which look forward to regional and municipal opportunities to improve our community. That would be more constructive than replaying an unfortunate event that fortunately had an appropriate conclusion — as measured by the election results.
good thing to have people living downtown. It is a good thing that developer Bill Katerenchuck is moving ahead in his dealings with the town. It may arguably be a good thing that the lifting of development charges was justified to make progress on the project. But it is not a good thing to inflict this monstrosity on the citizens of Qualicum Beach who will continue paying taxes to allay the revenue given up in this deal. It is not too late to modify the design elements of the project. This was successfully done at the College Inn site where initially an intrusive design was later abandoned in favour of the amenable three-part development now being built. I ask Katerenchuck to please take another look at The Clarion and have a Merry Christmas. COLM HARTY Qualicum Beach
RIGHT RDN-QB DECISION Editor John Harding’s recent editorial questioning the role of the RDN relative to the municipalities of Nanaimo, Parksville and Qualicum Beach raises some interesting questions. However, the example of the RDN board rejecting the Qualicum Beach minor amendment application was a poor choice to support his position. Fortunately, a sufficient number of RDN board members agreed with the submissions received that the Qualicum Beach application: • was not a “minor” amendment; • did not comply with the RDN’s own

BUSINESS PROFILE
Repairing instead of tossing good for planet Tim Lane operates his mobile computer repair business from his home in Coombs AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com
A Coombs business wants to help you hold onto your “old” computer or mobile device a little longer. “It is very common for a more than three-year-old mainstream phone to be thrown away even when they are working,” said West Coast Savvy Tech’s Tim Lane, adding, “I wouldn’t be surprised to see that time frame getting shorter every year.” “Repair saves you money and the planet,” Lane, who is deaf, said by e-mail. “There is way too much repairable stuff thrown in the landfill or sent to recycling that produces even more wasteful energy.” Lane — born and raised in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area — opened his small shop and mobile repair service recently after years in high tech. He earned a computer engineering degree from the University of Victoria, was an IT coordinator assistant at CFB Esquimalt and network administrator at a radio communication manufacturer in Victoria. He has also always done tech service work on the side and said he’ll work on anything, “repairing and servicing computers with hardware or software related issues. It can be a desktop tower, laptop, netbook, or anything that has CPU.” He does tune-ups, data backup, upgrades and plenty more, on any brand, including popular Apple and Samsung devices, pointing out that people don’t have to send devices away and wait weeks. A big part of his business — demonstrated around his shop

— is replacing broken screens and he also has a side business providing home and small business surveillance and security systems. Lane is good at putting things together, from computers, to complimentary businesses, admitting being deaf created extra work in putting together his business. “There are some communication issues with customers and suppliers but it doesn’t affect the business itself negatively, just more work to do for me,” he said, explaining he uses many forms of communication including always having a pen and paper and often using his “iPhone or iPad to communicate with those who are comfortable to use the touch screen device.” “These are exciting times for myself and deaf communities across the country, he said of the use of mobile devices and the Video Relay System (VRS) finally coming to Canada in 2015. “Due to a large and strong movement recently, resulting in a positive outcome, the deaf community and the CRTC (Canadian Radio and Television Commission) are moving forward,” he said of the move to VRS a dozen years after the U.S., finally replacing the antiquated teletypewriter (TTY) text based system for communicating on regular phones. “This new communication tool in Canada will help to empower people who are deaf AUREN RUVINSKY PHOTO while the opportunities and Tim Lane, owner operator of West Coast Savvy Tech in Coombs, replaces the screen of a broken iPad. possibilities for deaf business owners is endless.” Despite the variety of options Canada and America. EDUCATION/TRADE SCHOOLS Train To Be An Apartment Manager
(January 27, 1925 – December 1, 2014)
Olaf Reynolds peacefully passed away at 89 years of age at Stanford Place in Parksville. He is predeceased by his parents Ray and Ellen Reynolds, brothers George, Warren, Dennis, Radwin and sisters Beryl, Bessie, Blanche and Althea. His first wife of 55 years Edith passed in 2006 and second wife Jessie in 2014. He is survived by daughter Barbara (Allan) Descoteau, Parksville and son Richard (Lori), Port Alberni, granddaughters Natalie (Harry) Perera, Jennifer Catto, Mallori (Schyler) Elliot, Jillian (Cody) Cayer and Kaitlyn (Dustin) Reynolds, great-granddaughters Madeline, Zoe and Bay and great-grandson Parks. Olaf was born the youngest of 9 children on a small, rural homestead near Gull Lake, Saskatchewan. He moved with his parents to Coombs after the sale of the farm in 1945. Here he met Edith Allen and they were married in 1951. They relocated to Port Alberni when he started working at the Plywood Division (was nicknamed “Slim) where he worked just short of 40 years. He built their first 2 homes in Port Alberni in his spare time, was an avid gardener and most summers took the family on a road trip. In 1980 Nick and Edith moved to Parksville and he retired in 1987. Nick was actively involved as treasurer in every church they attended. He could always be counted upon to lend a hand to anyone that asked for his assistance or whenever he saw a need. He was caring, compassionate, giving and loved his family – his life was a real reflection of God’s love. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends but we are comforted knowing he is with his Saviour. A special thank you to the staff at Stanford Place (Bayview) for the wonderful care they provided. A memorial service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 795 Island Highway West, Parksville on Wednesday, December 10 at 11 a.m. Private interment to follow. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
VAGN SORENSEN Our Vagn left us, suddenly, on November 26th. He was 86 years of age. His beloved wife Ruth died on July 22nd, 2010. He was also predeceased by his parents Ema and Magnus, brother Egon, sister Biten (all of Denmark) and granddaughter Brenda. Vagn is survived by children Gary (Cathy) Sorensen, Bonnie Carmichael, Shirley Fortune and Noreen Taylor. Grandchildren are Jake, Tim (Jordana), Rebecca (Max), Ryan (Sara), Lise (Dave), Karen (Allan), David (Geetha) and Larry (Elviera), Adrien (Bob), Cliff (Laura) and Bradley (Tracy). Also brother in law Roy (Lourdes) Harris and sister Trina (Ray) Bowers and many great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends. Vagn started work in his father’s cabinet shop in Denmark. He served in the Danish Army after WW2 and immigrated to Canada in the late 1940’s. His first job was in Ontario on a farm as a labourer. He then worked as carpenter in Kitimat on the Alcan project. Subsequently, he moved to Victoria and met and married Ruth. He worked very hard as a carpenter, supervisor and project manager in the construction industry throughout the 1950’s. He worked for various small contractors as a carpenter at first. Later he partnered with Ray Bowers to form Sorensen and Bowers. Their first major job was the Begbie apartments. After that they built Macaulay, Olympic View and Blue Cedar Apartments. Mixed in with building their own apartment buildings they also constructed the Harbour Towers and the Royal Scot and worked on an expansion of the Royal Jubilee Hospital. Vagn was a proud “papa. He was never happier than spending time with his extended family and close friends in sunny Bowser at the beachfront family cabin that he, Gary and life long friend Melbye built over forty years ago. He and Ruth travelled the world and enjoyed many retirement years. When home, he was always busy in his shop doing wood working for the family including building a boat for the cabin. Vagn was an intelligent, hard working, practical and compassionate man. He will be missed by many people from all walks of life.

PARKSVILLE CURLING CLUB
Locals dominate men’s bonspiel Chilliwack takes trophy, but locals win three of four events T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com
The 2014 Thrifty Foods Parksville Men’s Bonspiel took place over the weekend at the Parksville Curling Club with three Parksville rinks taking home some hardware. It was a three-day tournament that saw 26 teams from Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland converge on the rink in Parksville, where the action was non-stop from start to finish. Four groups competed for bragging rights to see who would be crowned champion
and in the end it was the defending champs from Chilliwack, the Hockley rink, that took home the Bob Hawkes Memorial Trophy for the second year in a row. The group B event was a local battle between Parksville’s Willis and Deveraux rinks, with the Willis rink coming out on top. Group C saw the former champion Schmidt rink, from Comox, coming up just short against the Thomas rink from Parksville. The group D final had the Sakai rink edging out the Graham rink from Qualicum Beach.

VIJHL HOCKEY
Gens suffer two rough losses on the weekend T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com
It was a rough week for the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals, where off-ice distractions translated into on-ice heartbreak. Saturday the Gens were home to the Nanaimo Buccaneers and found themselves on the losing end of a 4-3 final. It was a far cry from the game Friday where the Campbell River Storm pummeled them 17-1. “It was nice to see the team battle back,” forward Mathieu Jallabert said. “Friday was a tough game for all of us and to see us get right back out on the ice and play hard like we did tonight, it was definitely nice to see.” They fought hard against the Buccaneers after the tough

Friday night. Down 4-1 heading into the third, Jallabert and Josh Carless-Jones, who scored his first VIJHL goal, brought the Gens back within a goal of tying it up. The Bucs would hold on, however, for the 4-3 win.

Saturday also marked the return of former Gens, Wyatt Meiers and Jonah Pearson, who now play for the Buccaneers. Meiers was traded earlier in the season and Pearson was recently traded, both for “future considerations.”
“It was different out there, for sure,” said Pearson. Meiers added: “We weren’t sure what it was going to be like but there were a couple of extra shoves here and there, all in good fun though.” Friday night is a game the team hopes will be erased from the memory bank soon. “We couldn’t get going at all,” forward Brendan Bilotta said. “It was like a bad dream, a real bad dream. I couldn’t believe the final score when it was all over, just couldn’t believe it. That’s one that we’re going to try and put behind us real fast.” The loss was hard to take but it seemed par for the course for a team whose president, Sylvain Giroux, and general manager, Lou Gravel, resigned last week. Head coach Chuck Kessler also

left the team. Rob Gaudreault, in his third season with the Gens, now takes over as head coach and general manager for the rest of the season. “At the end of the day, we wanted to make this an easy transition for the players,” Gaudreault said. “Instead of bringing in another new head coach, another person they’d have to get used to, I was asked to fill the role and it made sense. I’ve been with this team and these kids the longest and it’s going to continue that way going forward.” They will now try to get back on track as they visit the Victoria Cougars, who are in second place. Saturday the Gens are home to take on the Comox Valley Glacier Kings, who sit in fifth.

BALLENAS BASKETBALL
Goodbye coach Philip T YSON TAYLOR
sports@pqbnews.com
Longtime Ballenas Whaler volleyball coach John Philip has come to the end of his career after 35 years on the sideline. Back in 1979, his first year as a coach, Philip guided the Mt. Doug Rams, from Victoria, to a provincial championship. Since then, Philip has seen and coached a lot of teams from Victoria, up to Port Alberni, over to Ucluelet and then finally settling in at Ballenas
Secondary School, where he’s been a volleyball coach for the past 26 years. In his 35 years, Philip coached five provincial championship teams, including four at Ballenas. Philip has coached both boys and girls, at the junior and senior levels. He’s coached with the Parksville Volleyball Club and with Team B.C. and has left his mark on the game. When his daughter, Keri, announced the last day of his coaching career, plenty of well
wishes and fond memories came pouring in from former players, many of which went on to compete at the university, college and national levels. “I’ve had a very rewarding coaching career,” Philip said. “This last year was a good one, this team played well all the way to the end, which was very rewarding and satisfying to see. I’ve coached a lot of athletes in the 35 years I’ve been doing this and to see all those messages, it was very special.”
