sheds has become “archaic,” says RDBN FLAVIO NIENOW Janine Dougall, director of environmental services for the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN), submitted a memorandum to the RDBN’s board of directors on Oct. 15, 2014 titled Re-Use Shed Use and Salvaging. The purpose of the memorandum was to bring forward information regarding the condition of the re-use sheds at RDBN’s solid waste management facilities and to recommend actions to the board of directors. The memorandum stated, “it has become apparent that the public has not been following posted rules regarding proper disposal of materials at transfer stations.” “Members of the public continue to disregard signage, dumping garbage in the woodpile, ashes in the compost pile and choosing not to use the recycling facilities available on site for materials such as cardboard and paper,” read the memorandum. “Additionally, the state of most re-use sheds is abysmal. The public do not follow posted re-use shed rules, placing mattresses, electronics, small appliances, and broken items in the re-use area.” ...see RE-USE

The RCMP and the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service (COS) attended a call for service at 7 p.m. on Nov. 15 at the Colleymount Rec Site, located on the north shore of Francois Lake. The RCMP and the COS found three Burns Lake residents - two adult males and one adult female discharging firearms at the campsite. One male and one female were issued tickets for illegal use of a firearm contrary to the Forest and Range Practices Act, a provincial statute. The second male was arrested for careless use of a firearm and released for provincial court in January 2015. Staff Sgt. Grant MacDonald with the Burns Lake RCMP said people are allowed to bring firearms to a campsite as long as the weapons are safely stored. "Using a firearm at a campground is not an appropriate usage of a firearm," he said. Police seized the weapons consisting of riffles and a handgun and also found a small amount of marijuana. No criminal charges are pending involving the marijuana due to the officer's discretion.

What will be your good deed?
Nisga’a prove their critics wrong
Last Friday, Burns Lake held its lovely Christmas parade. A considerable amount of people came out in the streets to celebrate. If you weren’t in town last weekend for some reason, maybe I should mention that the wind chill was close to -30 C. Nevertheless, dozens of people were out waiting for Santa Claus to show up, and I am certainly grateful for everyone who traded the comfort of their own homes to be out in the cold supporting a community event. People seemed eager to share smiles, have a hot chocolate served by the village council, listen to the Burns Lake choir sing captivating songs and watch the mayor light up the Christmas tree (of course I didn’t see much of the parade because I was inside a mascot costume and several children were yelling at me because I was out of candy for most of the event). To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever experienced the Christmas spirit like I have in this corner of the world. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve had nice Christmases before, but it always involved some distant family members who only seemed to visit to point out that I was single and unsuccessful (well, that still remains the case, but at least now I am too far from home to be judged). I don’t know if it’s all the snow, my neighbours putting up their Christmas lights, or that radio station that only plays Christmas songs all day long, but there’s definitely a holiday spirit catching on. What really had me thinking about this was one of the stories we covered this week. Lakes District News followed the story of a life-saver dog and its owner, a senior citizen who struggles with type-two diabetes. The owner dropped her dog off at a kennel in Burns Lake to receive medical treatment out of town, and when she returned, she discovered that community members had donated almost $500 to help her take care of the animal. All this happened because of a warm-hearted kennel owner who posted on Facebook asking the community to donate $20 to support the dog and its owner. What was interesting to see was that some of the people who donated had never met the dog or its owner before, and one of the donors wasn’t even from this town. That was the perfect example of one small but inspired idea that touched other people’s hearts. One small gesture that made a difference in the life of a senior citizen - one who had just returned from surgery out of town and could have probably used some good news. Did she absolutely need that money? Were there other more important causes people should have worried about instead? I am not sure, and maybe it doesn’t matter. What I do know is that the kennel owner stepped up to do what she felt was right in her heart, and that was why she had such an overwhelming response from the community. It was because other people could relate to that feeling. This is what Christmas is all about! It might just be about making a difference in the life of one person you know. We all believe in different causes and we all have different values, but maybe that is a good thing. It means that we can use those different ideas to make sure our community will have the best possible Christmas this year. Maybe you can make a difference in the life of someone you know, or maybe you can inspire people you have never met before. So I dare you to also have an inspired idea this week, just like the kennel owner did. I dare you to make a difference in the life of someone you know and inspire other people to do the same. So… what will be your good deed this Christmas?
It has been 15 years since I wrote a commentary objecting to the B.C. government pushing aside its own hard-won treaty process to reach an unprecedented landand-cash settlement with the Nisga’a Nation for their ancient Nass River territory. My objection, and that of many others, was the imposition of a parallel state with collectively owned land enshrined for all time. This was an ailing NDP government rushing to enable a property ownership system that has demonstrated little but failure and suffering around the world. The Nisga’a are proving me wrong, and this was again demonstrated at a little-noticed ceremony at the B.C. legislature last week. The B.C. government had just passed amendments to allow a gas pipeline through Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park, the first co-managed provincial park in B.C. history. Another bill enabled the Nisga’a Lisims government to impose industrial property tax on liquefied natural gas production. Legal documents were signed so the Nisga’a legislature can do the same this week. In recent years, the Nisga’a disposed of concern about collective land restrictions by adopting a private property system. And Supreme Court of Canada decisions have repeatedly answered protests about the establishment of a parallel state – that’s what it is, so get used to it. The Nisga’a have moved to assemble four fee-simple tidewater sites for LNG terminals, joining the Haisla Nation at Kitimat in reaching aggressively for a modern economy through gas export. The Nisga’a have partnered with TransCanada Corp. on a 900-km pipeline to supply the $11-billion LNG project led by Petronas for the Prince Rupert port. And they don’t intend to stop there. “We want to be part of the Canadian business establishment,” said former Nisga’a Nation president Joe Gosnell. The signing ceremony was briefly disrupted by one of a small group of Vancouver-based Nisga’a who have been using modern protest tactics against this decision. We weren’t consulted, it’s a desecration of victims of a volcanic eruption, it’s a threat to eelgrass beds, and so forth, say well-rehearsed young men with video cameras running. Nisga’a President Mitchell Stevens has patiently and repeatedly explained that Nisga’a legislature rules were relaxed to allow every hereditary chief to speak to elected leaders on this pivotal move. After that it received the required two-thirds majority support. Gosnell, the revered chief negotiator who carried the treaty over the goal line in 2000, moved slowly with the help of an ornately carved cane to speak at a reception. He seemed genuinely surprised that he has lived long enough to see the fruits of generations of labour. Gosnell recounted the 1887 paddling trip down the B.C. coast from the Nass Valley to Victoria to present the Nisga’a territorial claim, where the tribal leaders were turned away on the steps of the legislature by Premier William Smithe. It would take until 1910 for Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier to promise a settlement, and until 1949 for Nisga’a Chief Frank Calder to be elected to the B.C. legislature. In 2000, when the treaty received royal assent in Ottawa, Gosnell took part in a ceremonial burning of the Indian Act and got to work on implementing self-government. And on Nov. 27, 2014, B.C. Liberal, NDP and independent MLAs voted unanimously to open the way to an industrial future for the Nisga’a. “That’s what being alive means to me today,” Gosnell said. “You’ve got to have big dreams. Maybe all those dreams won’t come true, but at least you have the ability to dream big. And boy, are we ever dreaming big.”

Re-use shed rules not respected

However, additional staffing costs could add up to $506,085 annually between all transfer facilities in the regional district. Option two is to close the re-use sheds permanently and focus on educating the public on other available re-use and recycling opportunities, as well as promoting the concept of community garage sales and facilitating donation of large furniture items to residents in need through groups such as the Salvation Army. A motion to close the re-use sheds permanently was not carried by the RDBN’s board of directors at the Oct. 23, 2014 board meeting. Instead, a motion was carried to postpone the decision until such time that affected communities have been consulted. According to Dougall, the RDBN will be holding community consultations in the future regarding the use of re-use sheds, and only after the consultations the board of directors will make a decision on the future of the facilities. “The consultation process has not been determined yet,” said Dougall. “It will be something that we look at and figure out in the new year [2015].” In the meantime, the RDBN’s re-use sheds will remain opened.

I would like to have a free Christmas photo shoot including a makeover and hairstyles for anyone in need this holiday. We need a maternity ward in Burns Lake
Editor: I am so disappointed to hear that our new hospital in Burns Lake, which has cost so much money, is not going to have a maternity ward. I think this is a shame, we need young people to stay in our little town. How can young families stay when the mothers have to go away to have babies? Between 1946 and 1959 I had three babies born in Burns Lake hospital. All were fine and healthy and have grown up here. My question: What is the problem? and why can’t it be fixed? Why can’t Northern Health help us to have a maternity ward? Thank you for thinking about this for the future of Burns Lake. Is this progress not having a maternity ward? Just been listening to the news on t.v. some good and some not so good. We are getting winter at last but we need the snow to protect the water lines. The forecast is for some very cold weather so we will just have to wait and see. They say it’s only fools and newcomers who forecast the weather. The U.S.A. is sure having its share of bad weather, let’s hope they keep it there. Nice music It’s nice to have the Grassy Plains church choir drop in for a little hymn sing on Sunday afternoon. Helps us pass the time for us here.
On Nov. 26 at the Tweedsmuir House at 7 p.m. the residents and many parents and visitors were treated to the most delightful evening of music and singing by our younger generation of up and coming entertainers and what an evening it turned out to be. What talent we have. Thanks to Martina Zechendorf. She is such a wonderful teacher and entertainer herself and you can tell the children love her. This evening was called Recital Canada Music Week. The aim of Canada Music Week is to bring to the attention of the public through various means the importance of Canadian music. There is much more I have at hand regarding how important this all is but I am short of space. Martina is one of my very good friends for many years and I always enjoy her concerts. How very fortunate to have her wonderful talent and how generous she is in sharing it with us.
Our family have always loved music. My mother was very much so. Brother Peter made big time with the piano and accordion. Dad played violin and I played guitar. Mother played the piano. Our home was full of music. Fraud On the front page of last week’s Lakes District News printed in large letters ‘Beware of fraud in many forms.’ It’s still going on and big time. I keep on getting these phone calls during the night but there is nobody that answers. Once there was an answer but hung up. Some time ago I got one of those scams. A lady was on the phone and told me of all the good things they had for me, a t.v. and music centre worth a pile of money, just a whole pile of things, too many to mention. I kept saying what’s the catch? No catch it’s all here for you. I told her to phone me in the morning so she
said ok but low and behold she phoned again. Same old stuff and then my card number, I had it figured it was a scam and big time. I kept on talking and trying to joke with her, she was getting confused and she said you don’t want this offer and I said no not interested and I could tell she was getting angry so I said goodbye have a good day. I found out this was the perfect pen company. I found out later on as one of my friends got taken. Also and he didn’t get any of the good things they promised me. That was just a come along scam. All he got was a huge box of cheap ball point pens but he never told me how much they cost. One thing I wonder about is why these phone calls with no answer. Is this a joke or are they trying to wear me down. So far no cheque scams maybe later on, I hope not. Winter is here It’s Saturday night
and it’s minus 17 so winter is upon us for sure now. Thank heavens for the snow to save the water lines. It’s Nov. 29 and it’s minus 20, a good way to start out the day. For once the weatherman has hit the nail on the head. I have a gauge on the outside wall and it’s been right on at least so far. When I had the use of my legs this was the kind of a nice day for working. Dad’s stories Sometime I would like to write up some of my dad’s story of his life. He was a great story teller as he had such a full life. His first time in Canada was in 1904 and he got a job on a farm in Ontario. These were friends of friends in England. He stayed there about two years. Then two members contracted T.B. and died of it. Dad then decided to follow the flow ‘go west young man go west.’ So he did just that and ended up in Calgary,
Alberta. Lots of work there. His first job was driving four mules on a scraper 15 miles out of Calgary then his story begins. What a life. It seems Christmas is not too far away folks are already hanging lights and decoration their homes. I heard today there is some Christmas music on the radio so far I haven’t heard it but I am looking forward to it. Such a wonderful time and so special for everyone. When I checked the calendar it’s just coming real close. December is starting next week. Christmas was so special in our home when we were growing up. Compared to today our Christmas was so very simple but still such a wonderful day. A little poem No person has ever added up the value of a smile, we know how much a dollars worth and how much is a mile. We know the distance
of the sun, the size and weight of earth, but no one here can tell us how much a smile is worth. Joke A doctor and a lawyer were talking at a party. Their conversation was constantly interrupted by people describing their ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice. After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asked the lawyer, “What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal advice when you’re out of the office?” “I give it to them,” replied the lawyer, “and then I send them a bill.” The doctor was shocked, but agreed to give it a try. The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepared the bills. When he went to place them in his mailbox, he found a bill from the lawyer. Take care we want you around for Christmas. Always remember God loves you and so do I.

Burns Lake man enters guilty plea

On Nov. 25, Derren Heppner entered a guilty plea in a Burns Lake court room to charges of trafficking in moose meat under the Wildlife Act. The guilty plea concludes an eleven-month investigation by the conservation officer Service into reports of moose meat being sold at the Lake Babine Nation gas bar. Through the course of
the investigation, seven bags of dried moose meat were seized as well as a small amount of cash. After hearing an initial sentencing position from the crown, the judge sentenced Heppner to pay a fine of $750. Despite Heppner being a Lake Babine Nation member, this court ruling is consistent with other cases in Canada. First Nations are permitted to harvest wild game meat for social and ceremonial use, but are restricted from commercialization. Across British Columbia it is illegal for anyone to sell wild game meat. Violations can be reported 24 hours a day to conservation officers at 1-877952-7277.

Food bank struggling to survive

After hundreds of people lost their jobs due to the explosion at Babine Forest Products sawmill in 2012, the Lakes District Food Bank saw a significant increase in clients. Fortunately, at that time, the new clients were followed by a significant increase in donations. Once the situation stabilized and workers started regaining their jobs, the donations to the food bank reduced drastically. "People thought we were in great shape when we thanked them," said Candice Little, coordinator of Lakes District Family Enhancement Society. "But we are still alive and we're still trying to feed a lot of hungry people." Although the donation of non-perishable food items has remained steady, the amount of money donated was reduced by 40 per cent in the 2013/2014 financial year, said Little. To make matters worse, the food bank has seen an increase of 10 per cent in the number of clients during the same period. The food bank spends an average of $6000 to $7000 every two
weeks purchasing perishable items such as vegetables, fruits, bread and eggs. Little said the food bank has already made some cuts such as eliminating "pudding, snack food for kids' lunches, cookies, and food with lower nutritional value" from the food boxes. The organization operates partially on funds from a provincial gaming grant, but according to Little, the funds are "limited." "That money only goes so far," she said. Winter can also create a different set of challenges for the less advantaged families since they are not fishing, hunting or cultivating gardens during that time. "It's harder for people to sustain themselves during winter," said Little. As an attempt to improve the situation of the food bank, the Lakes District Family Enhancement Society has started a campaign called Holiday Spirit Funding Drive. The campaign is seeking to raise the profile of

the food bank, and raise awareness to the fact that the food bank still needs the public's help. "During Christmas time we typically think of the rest of the world and the people who are less fortunate than ourselves, but we forget to look at our own community," said Little. From April 2013 to March 2014, the food bank was able to distribute 1640 food boxes to disadvantaged children and families in the community, helping to feed an average of 161 adults and 81 children.
"We only feed them twice a month, but some of these people are hungry every day," said Little. The Holiday Spirit Funding Drive campaign will run until Dec. 15, 2014, but the food bank accepts donations all year round. Donations to the Lakes District Food Bank can be dropped off at Lakes Artisan Centre, Bulkley Valley Credit Union, Woods 'n Water, College of New Caledonia, Burns Lake Chamber of Commerce and Village Insurance. Malaysia this month at the invitation of PETRONAS officials to go over their project. PETRONAS is leading a consortium that includes Chinese, Japanese, Indian and Brunei investors for a pipeline and LNG processing in northern B.C. PETRONAS paid $5 billion last year to take over Progress Energy Canada, which has major shale gas holdings in northeast B.C. and Alberta. Pacific NorthWest LNG received another boost last week when the Nisga'a Nation signed a benefits agreement with the B.C. government for the project. The B.C. and Nisga'a legislatures are passing amendments to allow the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission pipeline to pass through Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Park. The other certificate is for the Westcoast Connector Gas Transmission pipeline proposed to run from the Fort St. John area to another LNG terminal at Ridley Island. That project is led by BG Group, which has signalled it may delay development because of new gas supplies from U.S. sites where the British-based company also has LNG export plans.

Burns Lake Christmas parade brings fun and joy laura blackwell photos
The Burns Lake Christmas parade brought smiles to the faces of many children in town on Nov. 28. Despite the severe cold, many people traded the comfort of their own homes to wait for Santa Claus. The parade started at the Burns Lake Public Library and continued along Government Street until it reached Hwy. 35. After the parade, the community gathered at Pioneer Park for the Christmas light up. Village council served people hot chocolate and Babine Forest Products handed out goodies while the Lakes District Community Choir sang and spread the Christmas spirit. Mayor Luke Strimbold lit up the tree, and just like that, the Christmas season had officially begun.

Curling lovers had a busy time over the weekend during the 43 annual Fireman’s Bonspiel in Burns Lake. The three-day tournament was held from Nov. 28 to 30. The winner in the A event was Saul’s rink, and Fields’ rink took the second place. The first place in B event went for Sullivan’s rink. McBride’s rink got the second place in that event. The winner of C event was Bell’s rink, and second place went to Partington’s rink. The Fireman’s Bonspiel was hosted by the Burns Lake Fire Department.
A motor vehicle accident involving two pick-up trucks took place east of Burns Lake sending two people to the hospital on Nov. 27. "The investigation is in its early stages but it is believed that a west bound pick up lost control, crossed the centre line and was struck by another oncoming pick up," said Cpl. D.J. (Dave) Tyreman, spokesperson for the RCMP. Both drivers were taken to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries. The road was closed for approximately two and a half hours. Tyreman said that at the time of the accident, the highway was reported to be "snow covered with blowing snow.”

So many Christmas events in town to attend for the whole family Contributed
Award-winning actor impresses Burns lake Alberta actor, Christopher Hunt, played over 25 actors during the play When That I Was, including Jack Rice, Will Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth. The play took place on Nov. 27 at the Lakes District Secondary School in Burns Lake. The world of Shakespeare came alive in this one-man drama through the memory of the narrator, Jack Rice. The audience was transported back in time to when the Puritans had closed the theatres. The play was co-written by Edward Atienza and John Mortimer. Prior to the play, Hunt provided some insights about the show to community members at the school library. He also answered questions about his career and Shakespeare’s life. flavio nienow photo
The Arts Council is partnering with The Beacon Theatre to bring back a series of Met: Live in HD Opera broadcasts to The Beacon in 2015. Watch for ads in the Lakes District News after the holidays. Grassy Plains Christmas Craft Fair at the Grassy Plains Community Hall will be held Dec. 6. Doors open at 10 a.m. On Saturday Dec. 6, don’t miss out on St. Paul’s Jingle Bell Tea. The event takes place at St. Paul’s United Church from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. On Friday and Saturday, Dec. 12 and 13, a creche display, sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, will take place in the Lakeview Mall. On Saturday Dec. 13, Beacon Theatre will be showing a Christmas kid’s movie - How to Train your Dragon 2. Choir prepares Christmas carol Contributed The Lakes District Community Choir has a surprise for you at this year's Christmas concert. For the first time, the audience will be invited to sing along with the Hallelujah Chorus. One of the most recognized pieces of music in the world, this selection from
Handel's "Messiah" is a traditional part of the choir's annual concert - but many more delights await you on December 14 at 2:30 p.m. at Immaculata Church, 248 Third Ave. Admission is by donation. The first half of the concert the choir will feature the musical story "Mary, Did You Know?" Narrated by Paula Van Time, this blend of hymns, carols, and modern

Burns Lake resident Shirley Lindroos recently dropped off her seven-year-old dog named Babe at Bakers Acres Kennels so that she could receive medical treatment out of town. Although she lives on a senior's budget, Lindroos makes sure her favourite companion gets regular grooming and the best possible care.
