SERVING MISSION SINCE 1908

Lindsay Hickmott (centre) holds an automatic external defibrillator like the one hockey teammates Ed Griffioen (left) and Kirk Holt used to restart his heart earlier this month.

Mission man will play again, thanks to firefighters Tyler OLSEN ABBOTSFORD NEWS

The last thing Lindsay Hickmott remembers from his Nov. 9 hockey game is sitting on the bench, getting ready to take his next shift. His next memory is waking up in an ambulance, struggling to breathe and wondering what, exactly, had happened. Less than three weeks later, Hickmott stood in Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service’s Hall 1 with two

teammates, shaking the hand of the fire chief and hearing – not for the first time – the story of how he survived to skate again. ••• Hickmott – a Mission resident and former hockey coach – and his Fraser Valley Cresting Wings were hoping to turn around a losing skid when they stepped onto the Centre Ice surface at 6:30 p.m. to face off against the Canex All-Scars. The game was still young, in the

first period, when Hickmott took what would be his final shift. As the play headed up the ice, Hickmott skated by his own bench then, without warning, suddenly slumped to the ground. Teammate Ed Griffioen, who was on the bench, saw Hickmott try and hold himself up with his stick, then collapse. Griffioen thought Hickmott may have taken a hit in the corner. Wings defenceman Kirk Holt, who looked over his shoulder and saw

Hickmott fall to the ice, thought maybe his teammate had stepped on something. Hickmott stayed down, though, and when his teammates went to check on him, they found him struggling to breathe and moaning. Griffioen described the scene to his teammate Wednesday at the fire hall. “You were still breathing there. You said, ‘I’m going to be sick,’ then all of a sudden your eyes rolled

back into your head. That’s when we couldn’t find a pulse.” Hickmott’s heart and breathing had stopped. But even in his dire condition – potentially minutes from death – he had several things going for him. First, Centre Ice had an automatic external defibrillator (AED) for just such an occasion. Second, there was a fire hall just minutes CONTINUED ON 3

Hockey players save teammate’s life New AED list could save lives time, a “sketchy pulse” returned. Paramedics also arrived at the arena and loaded Hickmott into an ambulance. It’s there that his memory of the night picks back up. “I was wondering why I was in the ambulance,” he said Wednesday. “It felt like I had been punched in the stomach and I couldn’t get my breath.” After five minutes or so, he was able to calm down. The next day, he underwent triple bypass surgery. He is now back on the road to recovery and should be in full health in three months. While he’ll likely be on medication for the rest of his life, Hickmott has even been given the green light to return to the ice. At the hospital, Hickmott was told his heart condition was likely genetic and that he was lucky for it to have surfaced when it did. “The surgeon said if I

away, staffed by trained first responders. And finally, in Holt and Griffioen the Wings boasted two veteran firefighters who knew how to save their teammate’s life. They slid Hickmott’s lifeless body off the ice and commenced CPR while a teammate went to retrieve the arena’s AED. After analyzing the heart, the machine – it is automatic and, according to the firefighters, easy enough for anybody to use – sent a pulse of energy through Hickmott’s body. The electricity caused his body to jolt, but there was still no pulse. As Holt and Griffioen continued CPR, firefighters from Hall 8, just one kilometre away, arrived on scene. They hooked another AED machine up to Hickmott – one Holt and Griffioen were more familiar with – and another burst of energy was delivered to the prone player. This

didn’t have these guys, then I wouldn’t have made it,” Hickmott said. He had met Griffioen through hockey some 30 years ago. “I never thought he would save my life,” Hickmott said. “It’s a pretty weird thing when you have someone save your life. “How do you repay them? I guess by saving someone else’s life…” Holt had another idea. “We just need more goals out of you next year,” he said with a smile.

Automatic defibrillators (AED) can save lives, as shown by the speedy recovery of Lindsay Hickmott, who suffered a heart attack last month during a hockey game at Centre Ice. Hickmott’s heart was restarted in early November with the use of an AED, and now the Heart and Stroke Foundation is working to create a registry of defibrillators in order to provide 9-1-1 dispatchers with potentially lifesaving information. The hope is that a dispatcher could then forward information about a nearby AED to those

the Fraser Valley area involving Safeway grocery stores. All employees and customers inside the store at the time were evacuated and the store’s parking lot was closed off. Some workers stood outside the store in near freezing temperatures without their jackets, while others warmed up inside neighbouring shops. “Evacuation means right now,” said Mark

Brown, who has been working at the Mission Safeway for more than seven years. An announcement was made over the store’s PA system and staff began escorting customers out immediately, leaving carts in isles and abandoning the rotisserie chicken in the deli that were just being taken out. Brown, who works in the produce department, didn’t know how many customers were inside at the

time, but noted there were more shoppers than usual because it was customer appreciation day. A police dog unit was called in to search for explosives. None were found, and the store re-opened around 4 p.m., said Dixon. Police believe there are strong links between the incident in Mission and other bomb threats in the Valley on Tuesday, but have not established a connection yet.

Chilliwack Mall was evacuated Tuesday morning as police investigated a similar threat. The Safeway manager in Chilliwack contacted police after receiving word that a bomb had been placed at the store and was set to go off around noon. Nothing was found at the store and the mall was re-opened around 1:15 p.m. With files from Chilliwack Progress

Mission Search & Rescue (MSAR) crews rescued a man stranded on a Stave River sandbar Thursday afternoon after river waters rose throughout the day. Search manager John Lemond said the man had crossed to the bar earlier in the day not knowing that a high streamflow advisory was in effect. The water rose throughout the day and made it dangerous for the fisherman to return to shore. MSAR’s Swiftwater Rescue Team was deployed and used a tethered line to bring the subject safely back to shore. MSAR is reminding local fisherman to check the BC River Forecast Centre, at bcrfc.env.gov. bc.ca/, for advisories before they leave for the shores of local rivers.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

A dangerous job illuminated

The shooting this week of Kamloops RCMP Cpl. Jean-Rene Michaud illustrates all too clearly how dangerous the job of a police officer can be. We don’t know why he stopped that white Intrepid in Batchelor Heights in the middle of the night – police won’t reveal the reason for the traffic stop as it is part of the overall probe – but even routine traffic stops can be deadly for our men and women in uniform. While the initial word is that doctors are pleased with how Michaud’s surgery went, all too often such incidents result in death and incomprehensible pain for the family of the officer and his or her comrades. According to a Statistic Canada report from the fall of 2010, “in more recent years, stopping a suspicious vehicle/person and stopping a vehicle for a traffic violation have resulted in more homicides against police officers than responding to domestic disputes.”

The last time the nation’s attention was transfixed on such a horrible situation, it was earlier this year in Moncton, when a man named Justin Bourque ambushed and shot three Mounties, killing two. And few can forget the tragedy that unfolded in Mayerthorpe, Alta., in 2005. With news Wednesday of an arrest in the shooting of Michaud, we can only hope justice prevails and that the corporal, a father of two, makes a full recovery. As Kamloops RCMP Supt. Brad Mueller told reporters during a press conference yesterday: “People who don’t wear the uniform and don’t put their life on the line every day don’t know what it’s like to go through that.” If you see a Mountie while you are out and about, shake their hand and thank them for a hard job well done. – Black Press

Nisga’a prove their critics wrong Tom Fletcher

B.C. Views It has been 15 years since I wrote a commentary objecting to the B.C. government pushing aside its own hard-won treaty process to reach an unprecedented land-andcash settlement with the Nisga’a Nation for their ancient Nass River territory. My objection, and that of many others, was the imposition of a parallel state with collectively owned land enshrined for all time. This was an ailing NDP government rushing to enable a property ownership system that has demonstrated little but failure and suffering around the world. The Nisga’a are proving me wrong, and this was again demonstrated at a little-noticed ceremony at the B.C. legislature last week. The B.C. government had just passed amendments to allow a gas pipeline through Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park, the first

co-managed provincial park in B.C. history. Another bill enabled the Nisga’a Lisims government to impose industrial property tax on liquefied natural gas production. Legal documents were signed so the Nisga’a legislature can do the same this week. In recent years, the Nisga’a disposed of concern about collective land restrictions by adopting a private property system. And Supreme Court of Canada decisions have repeatedly answered protests about the establishment of a parallel state – that’s what it is, so get used to it. The Nisga’a have moved to assemble four fee-simple tidewater sites for LNG terminals, joining the Haisla Nation at Kitimat in reaching aggressively for a modern economy through gas export. The Nisga’a have partnered with TransCanada Corp. on a 900-km pipeline to supply the $11-billion LNG project led by Petronas for the Prince Rupert port. And they don’t intend to stop there. “We want to be part of the Canadian business establishment,” said former Nisga’a Nation president Joe Gosnell. The signing ceremony was briefly disrupted by one of a small group of Vancouver-based Nisga’a who have been using

modern protest tactics against this decision. We weren’t consulted, it’s a desecration of victims of a volcanic eruption, it’s a threat to eelgrass beds, and so forth, say well-re-

The Nisga’a disposed of concerns about collective land restrictions hearsed young men with video cameras running. Nisga’a President Mitchell Stevens has patiently and repeatedly explained that Nisga’a legislature rules were relaxed to allow every hereditary chief to speak to elected leaders on this pivotal move. After that it received the required two-thirds majority support. Gosnell, the revered chief negotiator who carried the treaty over the goal line in 2000, moved slowly with the help of an ornately carved cane to speak at a reception. He

seemed genuinely surprised that he has lived long enough to see the fruits of generations of labour. Gosnell recounted the 1887 paddling trip down the B.C. coast from the Nass Valley to Victoria to present the Nisga’a territorial claim, where the tribal leaders were turned away on the steps of the legislature by Premier William Smithe. It would take until 1910 for Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier to promise a settlement, and until 1949 for Nisga’a Chief Frank Calder to be elected to the B.C. legislature. In 2000, when the treaty received royal assent in Ottawa, Gosnell took part in a ceremonial burning of the Indian Act and got to work on implementing self-government. And on Nov. 27, 2014, B.C. Liberal, NDP and independent MLAs voted unanimously to open the way to an industrial future for the Nisga’a. “That’s what being alive means to me today,” Gosnell said. “You’ve got to have big dreams. Maybe all those dreams won’t come true, but at least you have the ability to dream big. And boy, are we ever dreaming big.” tfletcher@blackpress.ca

Mission resident charged after bullet hits police car Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

A 37-year-old Mission resident is in police custody after a police vehicle was shot at last week. Dustin McDonald has been charged with careless use of a firearm, possession of a firearm for the purpose of committing an offence, intentionally

discharging a firearm, and intentionally discharging a firearm at a police vehicle. The incident happened in the 32900 block of Best Avenue on the evening of Nov. 27 when police responded to a call in the area. According to Mounties, “shots were allegedly fired at RCMP members who quickly

took cover.” Police say one shot struck a vehicle, but no one was injured. Members of the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Teams, along with Mission RCMP officers, were deployed to the area. The suspect surrendered to police and was arrested without incident.

“(Integrated Homicide Investigation Team) continues to lead this investigation and we continue to gather information and evidence,” said Staff Sgt. Jennifer Pound, who explained IHIT was called in to initially investigate the shots at RCMP members as attempted murder.

We recently purchased a brand-new Fiat at Maple Ridge Fiat.We received exceptional service from Kim and Justin. The whole process of buying a new car was so much fun with Kim. She pulled thru on finding the exact model and color we wanted and had it for us the very next day. This dealership goes out of their way to provide service, but most of all they are honest and have integrity in which a lot of other dealerships lack. They made sure we were happy with our decision. Mission’s newest thrift store has been working with non-profit organizations since 1954. Value Village, located at 7178 Horne Street, is partnering with Clothesline to support the Canadian Diabetes Association. The thrift store will pay the organization for every item donated. “We’re very excited to open our first store in Mission,” said store manager Teresa Fillion. “The support we’re able to provide the local community makes us proud, and we can’t wait to welcome both new and familiar customers and introduce them to all our great deals offered throughout our aisles.” Value Village is a privately held global thrift

retailer offering clothing and accessories, and household goods. It has had an exclusive partnership with Clothesline since 1985 and has raised $10 million annually with 100 per cent directly benefitting the CDA. Money raised from Clothesline helps the CDA make a difference in the lives of people with diabetes by providing education, programs, services, and funding for research. Not only does Value Village offer an easy way for customers to help the local community, but the store makes it easy to shop for quality goods too. There are more than 100,000 unique items on the sales floor every day and there are 10,000 more gently used items to ensure customers are

continually provided with a refreshed assortment of goods. While the new Misison store offers strong support for the local community, the network of Value Village stores across North America encourages a more sustainable environment overall. By coupling the sale of gently used, quality items with the responsible recycling of items that cannot be sold, Value Village and its partners keep more than 650 million pounds of reusable good out of landfills. Donations can be brought to the store Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. For more information call 604-826-1133 or visit valuevillage.com.

Winners in art contest announced Awards for the I Heart Autumn in Mission contest were handed out Nov. 14. Alexandra Lanzarotta earned top spot in the adult category and April Pruijs won the young adult category. Mary-Rose Lee Wah was the best in show in the youth category and Akhila Sandhu received

the title in the child category. “I want to congratulate and thank all of the artists who shared their work with us. We had more than 40 entries this year,” said Nancy Arcand, executive director of the Mission Art Council. “I also want to thank Prospera Credit Union for partnering

with us once again to provide this fantastic opportunity for local artists of all ages ... It is through partnerships like this one that we are able to expand and improve our Mission Arts Centre programs and services, particularly our youth and gallery programs.”

Annual charity golf tournament benefits Mission Hospice Society The 12th annual Ivan Pretty Charity Scramble Tournament at Sandpiper Golf Course raised more than $9,391for the Mission Hospice Society (MHS). MHS executive director Angel Elias was presented with the cheque on Nov. 24. “We are very honoured to have been chosen to be the recipient of this year’s Ivan Pretty Estate Golf Tournament,” said Elias. “The money raised

from this event will go towards supporting our many bereavement support programs, such as our Circle of Friends, which is a bereavement support group for children ages six through 12 who are dealing with grief and loss.” Tournament organizers select a different charitable organization to support. “I have always respected hospice initiatives, recognizing

that the services provided are essential to our local communities,” said Ted Swaine, director of sales at Sandpiper Golf Course. “It was our honour to support the Mission Hospice Society this year.” The MHS was founded in 1985 to provide compassionate care and end of life support to the community. Documents on drug store ban still under wraps Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

The District of Mission still has not released any information about why the last council banned pharmacies and medical clinics from downtown, or how much that decision cost taxpayers when the district lost the challenge in court. About a month ago, the previous Mission council unanimously approved a motion by former council-

lor Nelson Tilbury to release all correspondence, including letters, emails and legal opinions, related to the “drug store issue. According to Mission’s chief administrative officer Ken Bjorgaard, staff have been gathering information but need to clarify the motion before anything is disseminated. “Our lawyer considered (the motion) and said it has to be more specific, said Bjor-

gaard, All the information related to the pharmacy have been kept behind closed doors, even after the case wrapped up in court. “Legal opinions are subject to closed meetings, said Bjorgaard, who plans to discuss the issue with the new council in private. Newly elected Mayor Randy Hawes told The Record he is “not happy the information has not been

made public yet. “It will be coming, he stated. “We (the new council) intend to be as transparent and open as possible. In May 2012, Mission council introduced rezoning legislation to remove “pharmacy and “medical clinic from the core commercial downtown one zone, blocking the application of a proposed pharmacy at the site of the old community policing centre on

First Avenue. Life Pharmacy Inc. wanted to open a walk-in clinic and pharmacy downtown, providing vaccines, a diabetes clinic, heart clinic and prescription drugs, including methadone. At a public hearing on the issue in June 2012, Life Pharmacy representatives said they purchased the building at 33133 First Avenue with the understanding they would be allowed

to operate a pharmacy, they believed the ban is based on unfounded community rumours that it would be a marijuana clinic and needle exchange. Mission council passed the bylaw two months later, with two councillors opposing the move. The property owner of the building, listed as 0773184 B.C. Ltd, launched legal action against the district in June 2012 after third

reading of the bylaw was approved. According to the petition in court, the numbered company purchased the property after it received assurances from the District of Mission that the intended use was permitted. In March 2013, the B.C. Supreme Court ordered the District of Mission to issue a building permit for a medical clinic and pharmacy on First Avenue.

Region facing fines for delayed surgeries

SANTA DOGS

Charlie, Kevin, Boss, and Leela visit with Santa at Allstars K9 Taining Centre on Nov. 29. More than $900 was raised to support the Fraser Valley Humane Society in Mission.

Fraser Heatlh is under fire for ordering its surgeons to reassess patients in an attempt to avoid steep fines for failing to complete surgeries within one year. Leaked documents released by the Canadian Taxpayers Federation show Fraser is already facing fines of more than $2.5 million for 650 scheduled surgeries that were waiting more than a year as of Oct. 9, while another 4,124 surgeries have waited six to 12 months. A Nov. 4 memo to surgeons directs them to begin reassessing patients who have waited more than 40 weeks. “It is imperative for the

interest of all, including our patients, that we use every available strategy to avoid penalties,” Dr. Peter Blair, Fraser Health’s medical director for surgery states in the memo, which is also signed by Judith Hockney, Fraser’s executive director for surgery programs. The memo says long waits have eased somewhat, with 4.5 per cent of surgeries now exceeding 52 weeks compared to 10 per cent a year ago. But there are still excessive waits triggering financial penalties, which are levied by the health ministry under its pay-for-performance system. In an interview, Blair defended the decision to reassess patients and

rejected suggestions from CTF B.C. director Jordan Bateman that the move is strictly a tactic to skirt fines by either resetting or pausing the waits in long-delayed cases. “What we’re trying to do is remind the surgeon that that patient has been there for 40 weeks and they better be getting them done,” Blair said, adding he’s upset with the CTF accusation. He said the patient doesn’t lose their place in line, nor is their recorded wait frozen to avoid a fine. Bateman argued reassessments are unnecessary and wasteful, accusing Fraser of “playing games” with patients. “We already know

these people need surgery,” he said. “Having a reassessment is throwing money away for no reason instead of doing a surgery or finding an operating room you can open.” But Blair said reassessments are justified, not just to nudge surgeons to get long-delayed patients scheduled but also to ensure the paperwork is in order and that a patient’s condition or medications haven’t changed. If new medical tests are needed and that’s not discovered until the day of surgery, he said, more delay could result. Health Ministry Terry Lake also defended the reassessments. “People’s conditions change,” Lake said. “If you’ve got a knee surgery, for instance, it’s important you make sure the need is still there. People may have undergone physiotherapy and reduced the need for surgery in some cases.” He said Fraser is “doing the right thing” by reminding patients to “redouble efforts” to get surgeries scheduled for patients waiting more than 40 weeks. Under the province’s pay-for-performance system, health authorities can access extra funding beyond their budget if they meet targets. In the case of surgeries, each patient who waits longer than a year means $1,400 in additional funding is withdrawn by the province. Dr. David Jones, the former medical coordinator at Burnaby Hospital, said it appears officials are blaming surgeons when hospital simply aren’t given enough resources to shorten wait lists. He said Lake is correct that some surgeries may prove unnecessary if patients’ conditions change. “That’s possible,” Jones said. “Or they may have died waiting too.” Mission Hospital is not among those in the region with waiting lists of more than a year.

During my childhood, my father would often preface his trips to the garage with the announcement that he was going downstairs to “putter,” often saying that he was “just going to putter around” in the garage. What he usually ended up doing for the next few hours was fixing broken toys, lamps or other appliances, or working on the cars. I distinctly remember looking up the word “putter” after hearing my father use the term, trust me, he “puttered” a lot, and chuckling when I read the definition: to occupy oneself with minor or unimportant tasks. But even then I knew that what my father was doing wasn’t minor or unimportant. Seeing him fix broken stuff around the house was an important lesson on the value of resourcefulness, frugality, and helping others. Some of my most productive days now are those lazy Saturdays when I putter around the house, doing some housework perhaps between writing these short pieces, and then maybe going for a walk. We never know what we might find or how we might get inspired when we putter. You don’t always need a prioritized list in order to get stuff done or to savor life in all its glory. Sometimes you just need to take the time to putter.

New Year’s Resolution: Hot rides and buys for 2015 Here are what I consider to be five important cars for 2015.

This sixth generation Explorer marks the 25th anniversary of the iconic SUV, with over 350,000 sold in Canada so far.

Mazda MX-5 2015 Jeep Renegade Over the last few years Mazda has been introducing There is no question that the merger of Fiat and vehicles with its new Skyactiv technology but there is Chrysler has helped to introduce many new vehicles. one car that will signify the culmination of all the things The small car segment is a perfect example; the Fiat Mazda does well, the next generation MX-5 (Miata). 500 and its variations has been a plus The MX-5 will come in 2015 as a 2016 for Chrysler’s bottom line. Built in Europe model and all eyes are on Mazda to see on the Fiat 500L platform, this smaller what it can deliver. The bodywork is more Jeep Renegade replaces the Compass dramatic and having seen it in person, and Patriot models. Powered by either the dimensions look fanatic but the new a 160hp, 1.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder front grille might take a while to adapt too. or a larger 184hp, 2.4L 4-cylinder, Jeep The two-seat cockpit is roomier, thanks to claims that this compact crossover is a wider body and longer wheelbase but still a capable vehicle because of two the overall length is 105mm shorter and by Zack Spencer available all-wheel-drive (AWD) systems. 20mm lower. Engine Styling is all-American; the signature Jeep grille is maroutput has not been announced, neither has the price, ried perfectly into the boxy design, as too are other Jeep but expect the car to be competitive with the 2015 styling cues. The interior is has a rugged, yet upscale model on price. design that features all of Jeep’s latest technology, Ford Explorer including the award winning Uconnect infotainment The sixth generation Ford Explorer will arrive in 2015 system. Pricing has not been announced but expect it as a 2016 model, now with new 2.3L EcoBoost engine shortly as it is due at dealerships very soon. available on the base and XLT trim. This replaces the older 2.0L Ecoboost and provides a 270hp, a 13 per cent bump over the last version. The 290hp 3.5L V6 is carried over but the Sport trim and new Platinum trim will be fitted with the 365hp Ecoboost V6. Ford claims that styling is the number one purchase consideration so the shape was retained but new grille and LED headlamps help refresh the look.

Honda HR-V Coming in 2015 is another SUV, smaller than the CR-V, helping to define the new subcompact SUV market. This little runabout is built off the excellent Honda Fit platform and will include many of the features that make that car a standout. The first is the interior of the HR-V. It will also feature Honda’s Magic Seats that flip

and fold for amazing versatility. The same 1.8L 4-clinder engine with 138hp will power this vehicle, either with FWD or AWD, through a continuously variable transmission or 6-cpeed manual. Pricing will be introduced closer to the introduction this coming spring. Built in Mexico, the HR-V will give Honda the same leg up that the original CR-V did for the small SUV segment. Chevrolet Volt It might surprise many people that the best selling electric car in Canada is the Chevrolet Volt, not the sexy Tesla Model S. There are many reasons for this, mainly the fact that the Volt provides all-electric transportation for 65 kms but with the aid of a small 4-cylinder generator to extend the range over 300 kms. This car has all of the upside of an electric car with none of the range limiting restrictions. In 2015, Chevrolet will introduce the second generation of Chevrolet Volt, one that hopes to improve on the usability of the car in terms of comfort and electric driving range. General Motors will showcase the next generation car in January at the Detroit Auto Show and the company’s CEO has stated that the new car “will store more energy in its battery pack with fewer cells, yet go further on a charge.” General Motors claims that 80 per cent of current Volt owners commute entirely on electric power, so any improvement to range will help increase this number. The Volt isn’t a huge volume seller for General Motors but this new model will help the company to showcase what it can do technologically. General Motors has the capability to produce some the most advanced cars on the road.

Nissan Murano: If you want a mid-sized crossover that will stand out from the crowd, take a look at a 2015 Nissan Murano, and its new price tag! This third-generation design takes the Murano’s car-like styling to a new level in the utility segment. It’s offered in four trim levels – S ($29,998), SV, SL and Platinum and there’s a choice of frontwheel (S, SV) or all-wheel drive (SV, SL, Platinum). The start price has been reduced by $4,500 (versus the 2014 Murano S) and prices have dropped on almost all trim levels, even though the new

When both model years are measured with the new NR CAN’s 5-cycle test method, the combined fuel savings for a front-drive 2015 edition is 1.3 L/100km and the 2015 all-wheel-drive version is 1.1 L/100km more frugal than its predecessor. In addition to enhanced exterior and interior styling, CR-V also gets a new suite of Honda Sensing

Mazda CX-3: Freshly unveiled at the Los Angeles Auto Show, the Mazda CX-3 is an all-new compact (crossover) utility. Like all the latest Mazda products it comes with that distinctive Kodo (Soul of Motion) styling theme and it’s the fifth in a series of the new-generation models to feature the full-package of Mazda’s ground-breaking Skyactiv (fuel-saving) technologies. In dealers next summer (as a 2016 model), the CX-3 is expected to become a new core vehicle in the Mazda line-up. Power comes from a 2.0-litre gas engine linked to a six-speed automatic transmission and Mazda’s new-generation AWD system. This system employs an active torque control coupling, first used on the Mazda CX-5, plus a new and unique front wheel slip warning detection system. New technologies available include a Mazda Connect infotainment system and its (radar based) i-Activesense active safety system. The CX-3 has an extra long hood and a flowing shape that raises at the rear to convey a look of strength and power. Large diameter wheels are pushed to the body ends and it has a long 101.2 wheelbase. The chassis employs a lightweight torsion beam rear suspension system. Forward positioning the

Honda CR-V: There are

many very good reasons why the Honda CR-V is Canada’s best-selling utility vehicle and it gets significant enhancements for the 2015 model year. Honda claims this is the most significant mid-model cycle refresh in its history and the changes include a new direct-injected Earth Dreams Technology i-VTEC engine and a continuously variable transmission (CVT). Although the current (2014) CR-V provides

Lincoln MKC: Agile, athletic and fuel-efficient are not words you probably associate with Lincoln vehicles, but they can be used to describe the MKC. This all-new and attractive premium compact utility vehicle fits nicely into a revitalized Lincoln line-up that’s more in tune with today’s luxury vehicle buyer. Powered by either a 2.0-litre (10.9L/100km), or optional 2.3-litre (11.2L/100km), turbocharged four-cylinder (EcoBoost) engine, the MKC has a starting MSRP just under $40,000 and comes in three trim levels. All wheel drive is standard plus continuously controlled suspension damping, adaptive electric power-assisted steering and active (cabin) noise control are included in a group of advanced technologies called Lincoln Drive Control. The MKC’s extra-large rear liftgate is a distinctive wraparound design that includes the full-width LED taillights. Created by using a unique hydro-forming process it gives the MKC a smooth, clean rear appearance and the wider opening provides easier access to its cargo area. A clever optional power feature also allows handsfree operation, to open or close the liftgate, by using a kicking action.

Murano comes with more equipment. Power comes from a 3.5-litre V6 engine connected to an Xtronic (CVT) transmission. The 2015 Murano has reduced weight (approximately 145 pounds) versus the previous generation, low rolling resistance tires, air grille shutter, low 0.31 Cd, underbody covers that enhance underbody airflow and improvements to the Xtronic transmission.

rows of seating, for up to eight occupants. It’s also available in four (3.5-litre) V6 engine editions plus three (V6) hybrid powertrain editions. The fuel-frugal base LE trim ($31,975) is the only front-drive version. Limited ($45,395) is the topline all-wheel drive edition and hybrid editions range from $44,015 to $52,990. The 3.5-litre V-6 can generate 270-horsepower and it’s mated to six-speed automatic transmission. Towing is rated at 2,268 kg (5,000 lbs) and a transmission cooler is standard, however, the tow hitch, with a wiring harness, is an option. While you gain the cool-factor of its utility, as a people-mover it can’t match the practicality of a minivan. Maximum cargo space of 2,370 litres (with second and third rows folded) isn’t close to the Toyota Sienna minivan’s 4,247 litres. Then again, Highlander has real offroad credentials. Good ground clearance, hill-decent and four-wheel-drive locking features keep Highlander in-touch with its roots.

front wheels allows the driver extended leg room, on the inside, and space for a hinged (organ-type design) gas pedal. Seating is provided for up to five and the rear seat occupants sit a little taller than those in the front.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of David Carl Sandberg on November 27, 2014 at his home in Courtenay, BC. Dave was born in Brockington, Saskatchewan to Rudolf and Minnie, the youngest of 7 children. As a young man Dave joined the Airforce at the age of 18 years and he was stationed in Comox and Holbert. This is when Dave fell in love with the west coast. After his release from the service Dave worked on the DEW line as a radar tech and then with BC Tel until his retirement. As a snowbird from Mission City they travelled south annually for ten years then in 2002 he moved to the Comox Valley with his wife Gloria. Best described by his nieces and nephews as written by Eloise “Golfer, curler, competitor, card games, wicked laugh, intelligent, reflective, commanding presence, stubborn, camping, Reno, Cloverdale, summer spiels, Legion, meat draws, solitaire, jugs of beer, horseradish, trophies, cautious, innovative, reserved, well read, dancer, Ford Worlds, Scottie, Flloyd’s Diner, chair sun tanning (one beer at a time), Holy Smoke Tavern and pool shark…” Dave is survived by his wife of 50 years Gloria and his son Carl (Barb) of Victoria, one sister Marie in Alberta, brother-inlaw Bill in Alberta and sister-in-law Crystal in Saskatchewan, along with many nieces and nephews. There will be no service and flowers gratefully declined. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC and Yukon or the BC Cancer Foundation. Loved and always in our hearts.

OBITUARIES

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Bryan Fawcett. After a short but brave fight with cancer, he succumbed to his illness the morning of Tuesday November 25, 2014. His passing was peaceful and he was surrounded by his loving family. He was a champion of Seniors rights, and a volunteer of many Seniors Groups and panels. He held an important position in the running of the 2010 Olympic Games of which he was very proud and honoured to have. In 2013 he reprised the same role in the B.C. Winter Games which earned him an induction into the B.C. Hall of Fame. His wisdom was frequently sought by politicians on a Local, Provincial and Federal Levels. In Lieu of flowers, donations to the Abbotsford Hospital and Cancer Center would be appreciated. Always in our hearts and thoughts. We Love and miss you very much. Fawcett Family
