Rescue horses Chase, left, and Badger meet for the first time at SALI’s farm. The farm recently moved from Langley to a four-acre property in South Surrey.
SALI supports the 'most vulnerable' New four-acre home in South Surrey
B
ig things are happening at Semiahmoo Animal League Inc. (SALI). In addition to running its usual programs – which aim to help at-risk children and women, as well as rescue animals – the nonprofit organization is putting the finishing touches on a move from its former location in Fort Langley to a four-acre property in South Surrey. The newly leased property will give SALI – which has been around since 2008 – even more space to run its programs, which focus on “preserving and protecting the human-animal bond.” “We support the most vulnerable members of society,” said
SALI executive director Keryn Denroche, an Ocean Park resident. Through its SALI’s Farm program, the organization pairs at-risk children – often those escaping violence – with rescue animals as a way to help heal past traumas. SALI currently has two horses – Chase and Badger – who are currently settling into SALI’s new South Surrey property. In the new year, once the move is complete and a few renovations are done, SALI will look to further expand its rescue-animal family. The SALI’s Farm program – for children aged 3-12 – has been well-received since Day 1, Denroche said. Children are often referred to the program through
schools and other social-service agencies. “The kids come to help the animals, and it’s really the animals that help them. We don’t have to do too much – we call the horses our therapists,” she said. The other wing of SALI is its guardian program, in which the organization helps at-risk clients – chiefly women and children fleeing violence, seniors and those suffering from poverty – take care of themselves and their pets. In those situations, SALI will help provide food and veterinarian care for clients’ pets, and in some cases, will foster pets so that they do not have to be given up. “Some people, they’re going through so much, and to lose a
family pet is just (too much),” Denroche said. “I couldn’t imagine having to give up my dog.” Though SALI has many of the same challenges as many nonprofits, Denroche said securing a new property has solved a major concern. Now, however, they are in need of funding to help keep the organization moving forward in its new home. “I think the community will be very excited about us and the work we do,” Denroche said. “We’re so happy to be here in Surrey now – I just love this community so much.” For more information on SALI, or to donate to the organization, visit www.sali.ca or email Denroche at keryn@sali.ca

Here is a listing of some of the festive events taking place throughout the holiday season.

Give the gift that will keep on giving Find the perfect book for anyone on your list
F
or the person who has everything, finding a gift can be quite the task. But when it comes to that last tricky person on the list, a book can be the perfect choice. Whether you're sharing one of your personal favourites with someone you love or simply picking out an interesting title, the gift of a great story is one that keeps on giving. Maggie Blondeau of Kidsbooks in South Surrey, 15033 32 Ave., offered up five selections to those who are on the hunt for the perfect book. Blondeau noted that it was extremely difficult for her to scale down the list to just a few choices, but kept in mind a selection of books that the whole family could enjoy together and read out loud.
Eternity, which staff describe as a block buster. The staff at Black Bond Books has access to thousands of titles, and there are always a few hidden gems that they can dig out, inlcuding Life of Death by Michael Robotham, which Jesson reccomends for thriller and suspense lovers. Other suggestions include: All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr Set in occupied France during the Second World War. MarieLaure has been blind since she was six. Her father builds a perfect miniature of their Paris neighbourhood so she can memorize it by touch and navigate her way home. But when the Nazis invade, father and daughter flee with a dangerous secret.
The Animals' Santa by Jan Brett ($19.99) High in the Canadian Arctic, Little Snow Hare wonders and waits for the mysterious animals' Santa. Who could it be? A magical family read aloud for all ages. We're Going on A Bear Hunt (sound book) by Michael Rosen ($19.99) This preschool favourite (for 25 years) is now an interactive sound book. Splash, squelch and roar with an adventurous family as they set off to catch a bear – a big one! Fun for ages one to seven. Nuts to You by Lynne Rae Perkins ($21) The award-winning author writes Blondeau's "absolute favourite illustrated novel of the season." This "nutty" squirrel tale is a laugh out loud family read-along that is packed as full as a peanut butter jar with adventure, courage, friendship and humour. For ages six to 11. Loot - How to Steal A Fortune by Jude Watson ($18.99) Travel the world with brother and sister March and Jules as they carry on the family business and

avenge the death of their father, a notorious jewel thief. A non-stop thrill ride of cons, schemes and mystery. For ages 10-13 If: A Mind-Bending New Way of Looking at Big Ideas and Numbers by David Smith ($19.95) If scales down big concepts and invites children (and adults) to see the world in a mind-bending new way. "I learned so much about our world from this book," Blondeau said. "An absolutely awesome new Canadian science book for ages six to 86." And finally, because she "can't leave out Elephant and Piggie," Blondeau rounds off her list with Waiting Is Not Easy by Mo Willams ($9.95) "A new Elephant and Piggie book is always a cause for celebration at Kidsbooks," Blondeau said. "The surprise ending is well worth waiting for. Even Elephant would agree.
"For ages two to seven – but adults love them, too." Cathy Jesson of Black Bond Books, 1-15562 24th Ave, has spent many years on the Semiahmoo Peninsula finding the perfect book for the reader and this year is no different. She notes that the hottest series this year has to be the Mazerunner Trilogy by James Dashner for ages 11 and up. Getting more specific, for boys Jesson recommends Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan and for girls Sisters by Raina Telgmeier. When it comes to finding sureto-please authors, Jesson suggests choosing a title by John Green or Gayle Foreman for teens. To hold in little hands, there are Board Books – which Black Bond has a huge selection of – including staff favourite, Book With No Pictures by BJ Novak. Other suggestions by Jesson include the last book in Ken Follet's Century Series: Edge of
The Boys in the Boat: Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics by James Daniel Brown Based on a true story. "The improbable, intimate account of how nine workingclass boys from the American West showed the world at the 1936 Olympics in Berlin what true grit really meant." What if? Serious Scientific Answers to Absurd Hypothetical Questions by Randall Monroe The popluar webcomic's responses "are masterpieces of clarity and wit, gleefully and accurately explaining everything from the relativistic effects of a baseball pitched at near the speed of light to the many horrible ways you could die while building a periodic table out of all the actual elements." Finally, Jesson notes, her personal favourite is Edge of Eternity, which she describes as "1,100 pages of history and a fabulous story." No matter who is on your list, a good book is the perfect present that lasts a lifetime.

There are a number of great stores on the Semiahmoo Peninsula where you can find the perfect gift for your special someone this Christmas season.
The perfect gift to put under the tree Semiahmoo Peninsula stores full of great ideas
W
hile there is a lot of competition for high-level spending at Christmastime, local retailers agree that, with a little imagination, would-be Santas can locate meaningful gifts for men and women that don't break the budget. Elif Costello, buyer for Aldila, has good news for Christmas shoppers with a special lady on their list – sweaters mean you don't have to 'sweat' it, and colourful scarves are always in style. "When gift-giving, sweaters and cardigans are easy to size – and this season, there are lots of nice sweaters and cozy cardigans," she says. "There are really great knits this winter and some of them have a special sparkle for the holidays. You can throw them on, they're nice and easy and you can't have too many – it's always good to have a new one."
It's also the perfect way to meet the winter chill with extra layers, particularly when teamed with a pretty scarf. "With a scarf, the size is always the right size," she adds, noting that while sweaters can get pricey, at a $30-$40 price point a scarf is an agreeable choice for those on a tight budget. "And women love scarves – I have tons myself," she says. "They're so fashionable – even in summer – and this year there are lots of pretty colours and textures and even sparkle to add holiday glam." Jewellery is a meaningful gift that stands the test of time, Joanne Morrison of Just Jewellery says. '"Computer and technological gimmicks don't generally last – but jewellery does, and it's something that can be passed down through the generations," she adds. And pieces like necklaces, bracelets and chains can have
have enduring significance by reflecting important milestones in life, she says. "You can hang markers on a piece for special occasions, like a baby's first Christmas," she suggests. Jewellery can encompass many styles, from funky and unconventional to vintage, classic and timeless looks, Morrison says. And it's not just for women, she adds – more and more men are discovering that rings and cufflinks can also be part of their own personal style statement. Jewellery can have special significance for couples, too, which can include his and her rings, yoga jewellery, and individual pieces that incorporate each others' initials, birthstones or special talismans. The Vancouver-based Pyrrah line – which has the contract to design jewellery for TV's popular Game of Thrones – also has a new selection of symbolic jewellery
of appeal to both individuals and couples, Morrison says. Bring extra meaning to 'I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm' with gifts that literally keep men and women cozy while enjoying outdoor activities this winter. That's the suggestion of John Davies, owner of Mountain Magic. "Merino wool socks keep feet nice and warm," he says. "And they also breathe nicely, which means they have the ability to keep you warm when its cold and cool when it's hot. The natural fibres act like insulation in a house, and very soft and odourfree compared with synthetics." Similarly merino wool tops and bottoms for both men and women – including long johns – might not seem like the most glamourous gift, but they'll certainly be appreciated by the active people on Santa's list when temperatures dip. And the insulating qualities i turn to page 19

Davies mentions mean "you don't have to bulk up too much" to stay warm. Fleece jackets, fleece shirts, water-resistant rain jackets and hiking boots, he says, and for those active types, you might also want to consider a pair of snowshoes also help, he says. "Snowshoeing has become a big popular sport that attracts a wide variety of age groups – if you know how to walk, you know how to snowshoe." Teamed with a pair of trekking poles they also offer great exercise, Davies says. And speaking of poles, a pair of adjustable Nordic walking poles make a great gift for any age-group, he adds, offering a workout that strengthens the whole upper core as you walk – and at around $29 for a pair they're an affordable option for gift-givers, too. Want to give someone a
meaningful start in what can be an enjoyable and rewarding hobby? Rob Fisher of Brewing Experience at Elgin Centre suggests a $200 value-added gift certificate. The company will immediately 'top it up' to a $260 value applicable to any of the store's beer and wine-making products. Given that the cost of a making a first batch of beer or wine usually runs around $150 to $160, Fisher says, the certificate will not only get someone started, but also offer an incentive – with around $100 credit – to create a second batch building on what they learned the first time around. "It's also a nice gift for existing customers," Fisher says. It's an activity that appeals to both men and women, he adds, with the satisfaction of creating everything from custom beers to sparkling wines. "Our clientele is pretty much 50/50 – and lots of young families There are options to match any budget when it comes to gift-giving. are getting involved," he says.

Potters is prepared to inspire holiday decorators from the door wreaths to their extravagant and beautiful tree decor (above) this holiday season.
Decorate the home like a professional Tips and tricks from experts for any budget The holidays are always a favourite time for creative home decorators. Whether it's something simple, like adding a festive wreath to greet the visitors coming in throughout November and December, or an entire home makeover fit to grace the pages of a home decor magazine, there is no lack of inspiration on the Semiahmoo Peninsula. Ed Holden of Potters (with three locations – 2124 128 St., 19158 48 Ave. and 12530 72 Ave.) and his crew attend Christmas trade shows all over North America and this year, the most common theme at every showroom was "the outdoor look." The rustic style featured "woodsy ornaments, branches and birds – including the ever-popular owl," Holden said. "We called our area "Woodland"
and took it a step further by including colour into the scheme to liven up what could otherwise be a drab look," Holden said. "We think adding some reds and navy, along with a hint of gold or silver takes it to the next level." Holden added that the colour scheme coming from Europe is a deep, rich red set against a crisp, sparkling white backdrop. "That is the secret we have kept all year, and (what) we went with at our store entry," Holden said. "The two colours together, form a natural, somewhat traditional – and perhaps old-country – look that stands the test of time. "That, and it looks drop-dead gorgeous." Holden also noted that it's a great start to add a wreath to your front door. "It can be as simple as a green
wreath hung with a red ribbon and bow," he said. Other ways to spread the holiday cheer throughout the house include garlands on stair railings – which will also add a wonderful pine scent throughout the home. Of course, the focal point for most homes has to be the Christmas tree. To make the tree stand out, Holden suggests starting with lots of lights. With LED lights, there can be 30 strings together, and they'll use hardly any power, he noted. Other tricks include using decorator mesh instead of ribbons or garlands. "It is that netting that you see designers working with," Holden explained. "It's inexpensive and one roll will easily do a seven-foot tree. "Dress up your tree with inexpensive picks that you stick into the tree, these can be used instead
of ornaments and will add drama to a tree." Jason Vandermey of West Coast Gardens (1420 172 St.) notes that almost anyone can come up with an exquisite look with a modest budget. "The easiest thing to do is to stick to one colour theme," he explained. "I prefer a clean white, as it is most impressive and easy to accomplish." He noted that subtle additions, like pine cones with tips painted white, and even branches of a deciduous tree on the forest floor painted white can add so much to the tree. "Buy a little bit of silver glitter and add to the pine cones using some white glue," he said. "Research ideas on Instagram or Pinterest." And if you're looking to add some festive plants, nothing says the i turn to page 22

Those looking to branch out from tree decorations can find something for any room in the house – including birds, mini homes and of course, reindeer (below).
Know your poinsettias before deciding to buy i from page 20 holidays like poinsettias, Vandermey said. There are a few important steps to take to ensure you pick out the perfect poinsettia. First off, look at the health of the plant. Make sure there is no edge burn on the leaves and that the centre of the flowers are intact. "The centre will be little buds with a yellow colour," Vandermey said. Secondly, look for healthy leaves under the plants canopy of flowers. Some plants may have gone into shock and dropped all the bottom leaves. Vandermey also added to look for the flower count and shape, as plants that have a bloom count of five or more are most desirable. The plant should also be fairly uniform and with all the flowers at the same level. When it comes to plant care, poinsettias don't need to be fertilized. If the soil on top of the pot is a "scratchy dry feeling" it is time to add water. Do not let your plant sit in the water, Vandermey cautioned. "Depending on the temperature of where your plant is in your home, you may need to water more
or less frequently," he said. "The ideal temperature for poinsettias is between 18 and 21 degrees celsius. "If your home is warmer, you may need to check your plant more often. Avoid placing a plant where they are subject to cool drafts. Plants left outside will perish." When it comes to the plant, there are many misconceptions, including whether or not it is poisonous. "Most plants have some form of toxicity to them, but poinsettias are not poisonous to animals or humans," Vandermey explained. "The white sap that you see when a stem or leaf has been cut could some some irritation to the skin, but is not a health risk." Finally, if you wish to get your poinsettia to reflower, you can, but Vandermey warned that it can take a lot of dedication. To get your plant to produce red flowers (bracts), Vandermey said you have to make sure they get exactly 12 hours of darkness starting the last week of September, then you will need to continue that process until the last week of November. Any excess light will cause your poinsettias to delay in turning red, instead staying green. For more holiday inspiration, be sure to visit both locations.

Crossing the little ones off your list Great gift ideas for the kids
T
he young ones on your shopping list are always the one that require a little more
effort. Whether you’re shopping for a newborn addition to your family or someone a little older, there is something for each end of the spectrum – and those in between – that can be found right here on the Semiahmoo Peninsula. Maria Siccardi of Toyz World, 1711 152 St., breaks down her holiday gift ideas into age groups. For 0-three months, she suggests
gentle rattles, soft, plush toys without button eyes, musical mobiles and toys, stroller toys, and items with varying texture and sounds – such as crinkly, corduroy or satin. She also suggests soft blocks, as a perfect baby gift. For those a bit older (three months to a year old) pop blocks and cause-and-effect toys are great to get brains working, as well as spill and fill toys, and beginner music toys. Siccardi recommends looking i turn to page 25

at paint with water activities for those three to five years old, as well as puzzles that teach, larger sets of Playmobil and Lego, pullback cars and trucks, stuffies with big eyes and simple craft activities. Finally, for those who are five and older, Siccardi suggests loking at more complex Playmobil and Lego sets, such as the City, Creator and Friends Series, more difficult craft activities and puzzles, and games like ping pong, jacks, skipping ropes and yo-yos to promote eye/ hand co-ordination. “Personally, I prefer the educational toys whenever possible, and we have a wide range of learning/teaching toys,” she said. “Whatever the age of your child, grandchild or friend, there are toys and games that will suit them to a ‘T’”. Sandy Smith at Cotton ‘N’ Crayon, 12871 16 Ave., recommends taking a look at the selection of Strider bikes in store. The bikes are scientifically proven to increase balance skills in pre-school age children and
the simple no-pedal design allows even the youngest children to learn to ride on two wheels, avoiding tricycle tipovers and training-wheel wobbles, while instilling considerable confidence and bike handling skills. The Strider bikes are ultra light weight (under 16 pounds) and the seat and handlebars are adjustable, so one bike fits children between six and 10 years of age. Other items Smith suggests for under the Christmas Tree is Kiss Naturals’ all-natural DIY craftmaking kits that include soap, bath fizzies, lip balm and hair chalk, as well as Playmobil kits for boys and girls of all ages. To keep them learning over the holidays, Smith also suggests Ukloo or the Iota learning games. Gerry Lewarne of Crocodile Baby, 105-15775 Croydon Dr., suggests parents take a look at Tegu’s line of toys. The simple, magnetic wooden blocks and toys are popular for all ages and the sets come in variety of sizes. No matter what your child’s interest, there are so many options that can be found locally for the holiday season.

Citizen watches are a great option, as well, Dhanani said. The watch brand offers a variety of models to choose from and come with an incredible six-year warranty. "The Eco-Drive models have the added bonus of being powered by light, so no need to worry about pesky battery changes ever again," he said. Finally, the dazzling Swarovski jewelry in stock will be sure to catch eyes. The popular brand comes with a one-year warrant and a huge selection of styles. "With Swarovski jewelry, you get the million-dollar look but with a modest price tag," Dhanani said, noting that, while quantities last, Rochell will be offering a free crystal star ornament for those who spend $150 on Swarovski i turn to page 27

Extravagant gift ideas that will wow Travel the world and collect memories
I
f money is no issue and you know someone with a travel bug or champagne tastes, then look no further. Ginny Harrison of White Rock Travel recommends taking a trip to an exotic destination, such as Tahiti, on Windstar Cruises. The small cruise ship with sails only takes 148 passengers and has just returned from several years of absence. If adventure is your preference, take a look at a safari in Africa. "The lodges in Botswana are amazing – so beautiful," Harrison said, noting she had a group going to three different camps in Botswana over eight days, plus Victoria Falls and Capetown. A 15-day trip costs USD $8,999 plus air.
And if you don't mind the cold, Harrison recommends taking a look at Antarctica for a cruise. "You can do it in style," she said. "There are a few high-end expedition ships cruising there now, so all your luxuries, like spas and incredible dining (are on board). "And schmooze with the penguins, too!" The Antarctic expedition trips run about $1,000 per day, with 12 to 24-day trips available. If you're looking to get a little taste of multiple destinations, the around-the-world cruises would be a great option. Several cruise lines do world cruises, including Holland America, Princess and Crystal Cruises. Oceania now has a Round the World Cruise in
180 days. "Can you imagine? Six months at sea, seeing every corner of this fascinating world," Harrison said. For more information on trip ideas, call Harrison at White Rock Travel, 604-531-2901. For something glitzy but a little less extravagant, She's Some Kind of Wonderful owner Nancy Holt recommends coming in to look at the beautiful Rock by Sweden jewelry pieces she has in store. Prices for the edgy, glamourous pieces can run for $64 or for more than $200, and will make the perfect addition to any outfit. Come down to the boutique, located at 14899 Marine Dr., to see the pieces in person.
