Friendship Centre ‘in difficulty’ Aboriginal centres association places designation on local facility Tyler Olsen MISSION RECORD
The Mission Friendship Centre (MFC) has been “placed in difficulty” by the provincial organization that oversees such centres following complaints from former employees and members. In September, two banned members protested outside the centre and a petition was circulated calling for a special meeting to address con-
cerns regarding management of the facility. The Record reported that former employee Kristopher Eriksen said he was banned in late 2012 after requesting the British Columbia Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC) – which oversees 25 such centres around the province – to investigate the Mission centre. He alleged unfair hiring practices and said the number of services
offered by the centre had decreased. Earlier this month, the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network’s APTN Investigates broadcast a documentary on the centre and the issues raised by members, including Eriksen. The friendship centre – which is located on First Avenue and partially funded by the Canadian government – hosts cultural programs, offers a daily hot meal during the week, and
provides addiction counselling. MFC executive director Grace Cunningham confirmed this week that the MFC had been designated to be “in difficulty” by the BCAAFC. The designation requires MFC management to sign a document and pledge to work with BCAAFC to address some of the concerns. A program review committee made up of other friendship centre staffers has also been struck to work
with the MFC. Cunningham said the centre has formed committees in four areas – public relations, finances, bylaws, and human resources – which include members and staff. She said the centre is working “to address the challenges head-on as a means to build capacity.” The aim is to create stability and focus on the needs of the centre’s clients. CONTINUED ON 5

Hit and run victim identified The victim of a hit and run last Friday night has been identified as 35-year-old Travos Stewart. Police believe the Vancouver area man was walking on the shoulder of the
Lougheed Highway when he was hit and landed in the ditch about one kilometre east of the Visitor Information Centre. A BC Ambulance crew driving in the area Saturday morn-
ing found the victim along with debris from a vehicle. The owner of a black 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee was turned over to police by the registered owner a couple of days later.
No charges have been laid and police are still investigating the incident. Anyone who may have seen something in the area related to this is asked to call Mission RCMP at 604-826-7161.

Almost 200 people signed up to receive help from the Christmas Bureau this year even before the office officially opened on Tuesday. “I expect more than 700 families will register,” said co-ordinator Phil Hope, noting donations have not come in yet and the shelves at the Mission Food Centre are low. “We’re just starting up,” explained Hope, adding most donations come in during the month of December. This year, the Christmas Bureau, operated by Mission Community Services Society (MCSS), is located in unit 142 of the Junction Mall. Donations and registrations can be made at this location on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Weekend hours have not yet been established. “The goal this year is to raise $130,000,” said Hope. Sanjay Gulati, MCSS executive director, said he hopes to exceed the target set. “We want everyone to have a great Christmas and we can only achieve that by working

Donations of non-per-
ishable foods and new gift items are needed, said Hope, adding cash donations are particularly useful because organizers can use it to buy supplies they are short on. There are about 10 regular volunteers at the Christmas Bureau, but more than 200 are needed throughout the season for general office work and to help out at special events. Volunteers are also needed to sponsor a family, help build hampers, and put up wish trees in businesses. Close to 700 families benefitted from the efforts of the Christmas Bureau last year.

RCMP investigate fraud complaint FROM 1
She said funding for youth arts and culture programs at the centre stopped with little notice this spring after the federal government overhauled the federal Cultural Connections for Aboriginal Youth (CCAY) initiative, which had provided money for the MFC programs. The MFC program was one of around 100 across the country affected, she said. “It has left a huge gap in service,” she said. As for banning clients, Cunningham said four people are currently barred from the centre. The MFC’s former president, Tom Blackbird, who did not speak to The Record in Sep-
tember, this week explained the reasoning behind Eriksen’s banning. Blackbird said the board of directors feared the complaints made by Eriksen – who contacted several funding agencies – could jeopardize the centre’s funding and programming. That, Blackbird said, would put the clients at risk. “There was a chance that if the funding had gotten pulled, it could have affected … several people that rely on what the programming is for.” Blackbird served two terms on the centre’s board and did not run for re-election earlier this year. He said the organization does need fixing.
“I think we know that there’s definitely change needed,” he said. “Things are moving, but it’s a very slow process.” Blackbird said the authority bestowed upon the executive director position should also be reconsidered. However, Cunningham said her job is to act on policies enacted by the board of directors. She said the complaints have led her to go to the board and review the MFC’s policies. “Ultimately at the end of the day, it’s my responsibility to enforce those policies.” “We have to kind of always take a step back and make sure the way we do it is effective and if the policies them-

selves are not effective we have to take a look at that.” But she also said some complainants had to take a look at their own behaviour and should have engaged directly with MFC staff. The Mission RCMP has also begun an investigation into fraud at the centre, according to Sgt. Shaun Wright. Cunningham said the centre had filed the complaint with the RCMP. “We have initiated an investigation and it’s currently ongoing so we can’t release details at this point,” Wright told The Record. An arrest was made on Oct. 27, but no charges have yet been filed.

The right to protest
Is there a place for acts of conscience in our society? Protesters on Burnaby Mountain have proven they feel strongly enough about stopping a proposed Kinder Morgan oil pipeline that they are willing to be arrested. No doubt there are many who will dismiss their protests as foolish and misguided. Others will not envy the hassles that inevitably attend being arrested and charged. But there are those, too, who will view their actions as heroic and principled, and will privately wish that they had the courage to take a stand against something they feel, on a very deep and fundamental level, is wrong. To those arrested, it is all the price of making a statement. It is not a price they wish to pay. It is one, they say, they feel compelled to endure. Their actions force us to assess where we stand on the issue – or indeed any issue that disturbs us. They pose questions that are not easy to answer, that call for considerable soul-searching. How many of us would be willing to put our comfort and name on the line, to back our word – easily

given – with unequivocal action? And what would be the tipping point that would compel each of us to similar protest? Although Kinder Morgan president Ian Anderson says the company wants to respect the “right of peaceful protest,” the fact is that our society gives scant respect to protest, peaceful or not. Dissent is not popular in our society. The conventional wisdom is that governments always have good and just reasons to act as they do, that lies are never told to voters and that business interests always act for the good of humanity. Anyone who believes otherwise is swiftly dismissed as a ‘conspiracy theorist.’ Yet we have discovered time and time again that governments can be wrong, and that conspiracies – sometimes on a grand scale – do exist. Protests may be discomfiting. Protests may be foolish. There may be better ways to argue the rights and wrongs without chaining ourselves to railings and trees. But without the right to dissent, without the right to protest, we have no business pretending we live in a democracy. – Black Press

Liquor changes could push up prices Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views When the B.C. government announced its latest changes to liquor distribution, the reaction was not what I expected. Private store representatives complained bitterly that the government is allowing further expansion of fridges and “cold rooms” in selected government liquor stores, and longer operating hours that include more Sunday openings. Those hours, along with non-union staff, are the private stores’ big advantages as things stand in B.C.’s hybrid liquor retailing system. The B.C. Government Employees’ Union didn’t seem at all perturbed that state-run stores’ key advantage was also going to be gone effective April 1. That would be preferential wholesale pricing, in which the government’s monopoly wholesaler sells to them at cost and to private stores at higher rates.
How much higher? Liquor Distribution Branch officials were carefully vague on that, and it varies depending on which of the 22 wholesale categories you look at. They released a graph that suggests the average wholesale cost to government stores might be going up 10 to 15 per cent to create a “level playing field” with private stores. That wholesale price difference is the main reason private stores have generally higher retail prices. And the majority of the province’s revenue of nearly $1 billion a year comes from this monopoly wholesale business, where the hidden tax is coyly termed a “mark-up.” When the new, simplified system comes in next spring, a bottle of hard liquor will have a “mark-up” of 124 per cent. That’s right, LDB more than doubles the price with its wholesale liquor tax. And if it’s premium booze, anything valued at more than $21 a litre will get an extra luxury tax on top of that. Coolers and ciders will see a 73 per cent mark-up. Wines are taxed at 89 per cent, with extra luxury tax on premium wines. Beer gets a per-litre tax with ascending rates for small, medium and large breweries. Then of course there is federal and provincial sales
tax applied to all of it. Cheers! Premier Christy Clark acknowledged that the first guiding principle of this overhaul is to keep that government revenue coming.
The average wholesale cost to government stores might be going up 10 to 15 per cent The new BCGEU president, Stephanie Smith, doesn’t sound like your bullhorn-toting socialist of yore. She insists she’s gungho to compete head to head with those private interlopers and get back some lost market share, particularly on the high-volume cold beer sales. The union has another ace in the hole. Its current contract stipulates that LDB can’t close stores. In some small towns there are
government stores that lose money, particularly since they’ve had more private competition. But at least for the duration of this BCGEU contract, the government retail arm will continue to operate in some places as a perverse social program, subsidizing retail clerk jobs that pay nearly twice what private retail pays. And let’s face it, running a till at a liquor store is not rocket surgery. Private and government store staff have to take the same training, and liquor inspector sting operations have increased vigilance on ID checks in all stores. With higher wholesale prices applied to government stores, this kind of artificial support will cost more. The only way LDB could maintain it without subsidizing it from the wholesale windfall would be to raise retail prices. The LDB says this new simplified system is “not intended to impact consumer pricing.” Note the careful choice of words. Oh, one last thing. There is another new tax in the works. It will be applied to higher-alcohol beverages, in an effort to reduce adverse health effects. tfletcher@blackpress.ca

YOUR VIEWS Shouldn’t be marching if not in armed forces As a military veteran I have proudly marched with other veterans in Remembrance Day parades since 1954. I was quite upset by the fake soldier caught in the act in Ottawa on November 11th and hoped he would face criminal charges. On Remembrance Day I went to the assembly point for this years parade in Mission but turned and
went home because some people, who I know personally, were lined up to march with the veterans, yet these same people have never been in the armed forces. This is no different than the civilian who disgraced himself by wearing an army uniform in Ottawa. They should all be punished for their disgraceful acts. Terry Biggar, Mission
Take city hall to task if need be To paraphrase something I once read: municipal politics is the worst breeding ground for corruption and the worst incubators for politicians. If you don`t realize that by now you just haven’t been paying attention. I have to wish the new members of council well as they are new to the game and come to it with the best of intentions. And a game it is no matter how much newly elected councillors gloss it up by saying it’s an honour to serve the public. Naivety will be the first to go as the system itself is unrelentingly corrosive. It rewards those who look the other way when times get tough and past wrong doings are exposed. As soon as things go south for this new council – and they will – the tendency has
always been to circle the wagons. It isn’t good enough for any regime at city hall to absolve themselves of what other councils have done - not by a long shot. Our municipality is like a corporation changing directors every four years. These new directors are responsible for the past mistakes or the corruption of previous directors. That is the way it should also be with councillors and district officials alike, to ensure accountability. Never be afraid to step on toes at city hall and the district as these people are our employees and have to be taken to task if need be to keep the system as honest and transparent as possible. MISSION RECORD
Registrations for the Candlelight Parade have been slow this year, but organizers are optimistic more entries will come in during the final week leading up to the event. “We’ll be accepting registrations until the day of the parade,” said Kristin Parsons, chair of the parade committee. “It’s free to sign up, free to watch.” Last year there were about 75 floats, and only 45 have signed up so far this year. The Candlelight Parade is Mission’s only parade and Western Canada’s largest night time parade, said Parsons, noting it has been running for 31 years. “The parade has been
around for a very, very long time. Families look forward to it to kick off December,” she added. Thousands of people across the Fraser Valley enjoy the festive music and bright lights every year, and Parsons believes the parade is also a chance to showcase the community and local businesses. The Dec. 5 parade begins at 7:30 p.m. and runs along First Avenue, starting at Horne Street and ending at Park Street. Road closures will take place at 6 p.m. from Murray Street to Haig Street. If you would like to participate in the parade, call the Mission Chamber of Commerce at 604-826-6914.

It may have already been as good as done, but local golfer Jake Scarrow made it official on Nov.12 by signing his letter of intent to attend the University of Idaho next year. Scarrow, a senior student at Hatsic Secondary, has been in contact with Idaho since early summer. “I officially signed my name on a piece of paper and locked away the future,” said Scarrow with a laugh. “It’s kind of a thing I’ve been working on for the better part of 10 years. The goal was to get to college golf, so it was a good feeling to sign my name.” Scarrow will receive a full-ride scholarship for his four years at NCAA Div. 1 Idaho (five if he red-shirts for the first year). The golfer’s journey towards recruitment began with a profile of
golf stats and tournament scores that Scarrow sent to a number of American NCAA universities. While he received interest from several schools, Idaho was always the program to beat in Scarrow’s mind. The golf coach, NCAA Hall of Famer John Means, came out to watch several of his tournaments, and even flew Scarrow to the university for a recruiting trip in August. While Scarrow had “a pretty strong feeling from Idaho all the way,” the trip sealed the deal. After spending a few days checking out the campus and the team, he was excited, rather than nervous, about the new chapter in his life. “I got there and I spent the whole weekend with the team,” he said, “which is good, it’s team bonding, you

inal communities are working toward reconciliation. The goals of the AEEA in Mission are to increase student knowledge of aboriginal people, culture, and history; increased levels of engagement for students; increase student involvement in extra curricular and leadership activities; and to increase student success and preparedness. “We’re still very focused on respecting and honouring history,” said Schmor. “We want to ensure they have as many fulfilling and empowering opportunities as possible.” Mission students in general benefit from the AEEA as well, said Schmor, noting there are increased opportunities for students to learn about aboriginal language and culture. According to the ministry of education, graduation rates for Aboriginal students in Mission has increased by 15 per cent since the first AEEA was developed in 2007. There completion rate for aboriginal students was 53 per cent in 2008-2009. In 20122013, that number climbed to 68 per cent. There are more than 900 aboriginal students in Mission, making up about 15 per cent of the total student body.

Getting into the
HOLIDAY
Spirit
Mission Healthcare Auxiliary volunteers Marie (left) and Justine helped set up The Cottage Thrift Store on First Avenue for the Christmas season. The holiday season is just around the corner. Millions of people around the world will be celebrating Christmas with family and friends, and will be thinking about others in their community a little bit more. Whether it’s writing greeting cards, decorating your home, or humming a holiday tune, everyone has their own unique way of getting into the Christmas spirit. In Mission, traces of the holiday can be seen on colourful wreaths on doors and bright lights that shine in the night. There are numerous special events throughout the community to celebrate the occasion. Lifetime Learning Centre Society is hosting a Christmas Tea on Dec. 3. This annual event is open to everyone and runs from 1 to 3 p.m. The cost to attend is by donation. There will be a Christmas Dinner on Dec. 17 at Lifetime Learning Centre Society, 32444 Seventh Avenue. There will be turkey and all the fixings.
The lunch runs from 12 to 2 p.m. Volunteers are needed for both events. If you would like to help, or for more information call 604-820-0220. Christmas events at Chartwell Cedarbrook Chateau run throughout December. There are crafting events on numerous days and there will be carolling in the courtyard on Dec. 14. Everyone is welcome. St. Paul’s Presbyterian Youth Choir will sing for residents on Dec. 21 at 7 p.m. Some give back to their community by volunteering their time. At The Cottage Thrift Store, run by the Mission Healthcare Auxiliary, volunteers have already decorated the shop and lined the shelves with Christmas ornaments, outfits, and unique gifts for people on your list. Mission Community Services Society’s Christmas Bureau is also in need of volunteers. If you can help, call 604-826-3634.

A vision for Mission Seniors
Mission is an ideal location for seniors to live — a community with affordable land values, great indoor and outdoor recreational opportunities, and a small community feeling. One of the amenities many Mission seniors are looking to is a new and expanded seniors centre which will retain and attract vibrant and engaged seniors in our community. The seniors centre envisioned is a multi-generational facility which will be a focal point for activities serving to build on social and cultural assets that seniors bring to Mission. Programs would be augmented by providing health, benefit, pension, income tax, and access to community services to seniors. The centre would focus on seniors. With most, but not all, senior activities occurring during the day, evenings would see seniors, youth and community organizations utilizing the facility for meetings, educational programs (such as computer training) and social activities that span the generations.
It could provide an opportunity for young and old to mix, share experiences, and generate common understandings through programs such as “adopt a grandparent”, as well as numerous learning experiences. Space would be available for seniors to socialize, watch hockey games, read, play cards, and other evening activities. A commercial kitchen would provide the ability to operate a lunch program, launch a kitchen training program, as well as catering to evening activities booked into the facility. The operating model would have the facility owned by the District of Mission and operated by the Mission Seniors Centre Association. The centre would be part of a mixed use development which includes market affordable condominiums, rental units, and subsidized rental units for seniors above the seniors centre. It is an exciting vision for the future of Mission seniors and will be a major contribution to the wellbeing of our community. Seniors provide a lifetime of experience
and expertise. The seniors centre would offer an opportunity to bridge generational gaps and bring together people of all ages in a facility that offers a vast array of activities for all to share. Our vision for an inclusive, multi-generational activity centre for seniors is very much in tune
with the October 2014 United Nations International Day of Older Persons, the theme of which is “Leaving No One Behind: Promoting a Society for All.” Submitted by Bob Ingram

The Mission Record Friday, November 28, 2014 23
Why I Chose Cedar Valley Manor Initially I decided to buy a suite at Cedar Valley Manor because a friend of mine, who thinks things through very carefully, had already bought a suite. My friend was attracted to the simplicity of life at Cedar Valley Manor as well as the safety and security associated with the ongoing involvement of a trusted, community based non-profit organization with a long track record in providing high quality housing for seniors in Mission. And MASH, the Mission Association for Seniors Housing, which owns Cedar Valley Manor as well as The Cedars, was just that organization! We both loved the idea of never having to worry about the roof over our heads, the yard, or our
appliances ever again. If anything goes wrong with any of them, MASH will repair or replace them. I was also very attracted to the idea that life will be easier for my kids too – I don’t want them to have to worry about me - and now that I am living in a community of friends and neighbours with lots of support around, they won’t have to. Plus, in 10 years when I will be 75, who knows what might happen? If it ever comes to the point where I can’t drive not only will I have this great community, there’s also a bus stop right outside. Just constructed, I love the fact that everything at Cedar Valley Manor is brand new. Though there are still a few teething issues with a couple things,
the people here have been fantastic in making sure everything is (or soon will be) just as I had pictured it. The simplicity of the life lease is something else that really appealed to me at Cedar Valley Manor. Not wanting to continue to play the real estate game, here I get to know that my interests are protected, and that MASH is looking out for me. It makes me feel at ease, so I can focus on the things I want to for the rest of my life! Cedar Valley Manor really is the place that I’ve been waiting for. My other friends here feel the same way too, and they just love it. One of my friends said she was in seventh heaven! Gail Brunsch, Long time Mission resident.

Like puzzles? Then you’ll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off. How it works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle. Look for the solution in next month’s puzzle section of Living 55 Plus. Solution to last month’s Word Search

Seven seniors flu clinics reinstated Jeff Nagel BLACK PRESS
Fraser Health is reinstating seven flu vaccination clinics for seniors in various community centres after its decision to halt them this year triggered a backlash. More than 40 community centres that hosted seniors flu shot clinics last year were told earlier this fall they would not be run again as people have increasingly gone to pharmacists and doctors’ offices instead in recent years. Health Minister Terry Lake ordered a review after the NDP made it an issue in the Legislature last week. Fraser Health spokesperson Tasleem Juma said public health nurses will run clinics after they were requested by the nine community centres. There will be three in Burnaby (Bonsor, Edmonds and Cameron), and others in South Surrey at Centennial
Park, at Guildford in Surrey, at a friendship centre in Agassiz and a seniors centre in Mission. Times and other details are to be posted at http://www.immunizebc.ca/clinics/flu once they’re confirmed. Some other community centres also organized on-site shots by pharmacists, but that option may have been seen by others as “playing favourites” with a particular business, Juma said. She said the main concern was that pharmacies and other locations weren’t as accessible for seniors as the community centres they routinely visit. There have also been complaints of lack of privacy in supermarket pharmacies and administration charges by some pharmacies – which Juma said should not happen for seniors. “If you are eligible for a free flu vaccine shot there should be no cost whatsoever,” she said, adding those incidents

should be reported to the public health unit or the B.C. College of Pharmacists.“Seniors should not be paying any type of fee to get their flu shot.” The shift in focus away from seniors centres was intended to let public health staff focus more on other groups, including people in homeless shelters and children under five, who cannot be vaccinated by a pharmacist.

Trapped within narrow-mindedness On the Spot
Ken HERAR
I received an interesting letter from a local reader. She writes about going to a recent Diwali function in Mission and describes that 99 per cent of the Punjabis were rude. She describes that
people were blocking her view and had no concern for others. She also says that no one should be allowed to come to this country unless they speak one of our official languages. She also talks about how Punjabi children just entering school cannot speak English properly or do not behave, and the parents pay no attention to what the teachers say. At the end of her letter she says she has many Punjabi friends and they all agree that most of the Punjabis have no manners and don’t know how
to behave properly. Well, enough said. I am Punjabi and I’m very proud to be one. I am not denying, we Punjabis don’t have any issues to overcome, like any other community group, but to say 99 per cent of us are rude is the farthest from the truth and statistically incorrect. I do agree, we have many people that cannot speak the English language, but that doesn’t define us as Canadians. Punjabis are noted to be one of most generous people on the planet, who donate
shouldn’t respond to her, but I believed that it was important to bring this discussion forward and create a level of understanding in a respectful manner. That’s how we’re going to see change, not by hiding it in a corner of darkness. Cycling4Diversity executive co-ordinator Anne-Marie Sjoden said: “ I had the opportunity to visit a couple of the Punjabi schools, during our ride and each and every student spoke very good English. The teachers had amazing comments about their students. A very
annually to many charities. I posted this letter on my Facebook to gather a community response and many agreed that the Punjabi community is always willing to help to make our community a better place. You cannot judge a few, for many. This is the one of the difficulties of living in a multicultural community. People often get trapped with this narrow-mindedness and can’t see that not everyone is the same and shouldn’t be painted with the same brush. Some thought I

CURTIS MacDONALD Sales Consultant at Murray KIA “Under promise, over deliver.” This is my start in automotive sales. I couldn’t have started at a better dealership. The Kia product will be the same at each dealership, the people, the attitude and service will not. We at Murray Kia aim to grow with our customers, community and company to create a lasting relationship.
One of the prime requirements for any successful business are satisfied customers. Those in the business world are keenly aware that a satisfied customer will most likely return to them in the future, and that they will recommend their products and services to others. To be a satisfied satisfied customer, we need to be treated fairly and honestly, and in a civilized manner; we do not like being taken advantage of, cheated or ridiculed in any way. Likewise, on a personal level, we should also strive to have satisfied customers. Everyone we come in contact with is somewhat of a customer and we should be selling our friendship, goodwill and cheerfulness. The Bible tells us to treat others as we want them to treat us, and when dealing with others this “Golden Rule” is necessary for us to have and keep enjoyable relationships. Dissension in one’s family, or in the workplace, or with anyone we deal with, is contrary to the way our Lord wants us to live our lives. And although it is not always easy to reflect God’s goodwill to others, when we are cordial to others, we receive enjoyment and we are blessed by extending God’s love.

In fact he has said quite the opposite and told me that the parents are very involved. I would have to disagree with the comment about 99 per cent of the Punjabi community being rude. I have always felt very welcomed at the temple.” Kevin Francis said: “In 2003, the human genome project came to what should have been a staggering conclusion: we are all related. I know from experience that adapting to a new cultural milieu is difficult without having to live up to arbitrary standards, indeed that’s why we, as a country, support multiculturalism; but integration cannot be achieved upon a designated schedule. Each one of us learns at our own pace. Let’s not fall into the trap of intolerance because of cultural ignorance. It spawns an all too slippery slope that makes us forget what Dr. Francis Collins said at the end of the human genome project: indeed there is but one race, the

on remaining stock in December. That said, as we head towards year-end and dealer inventory levels shrink, so will a buyer’s bargain vehicle choices.
First, a couple of consumer tips to consider: Even if a local dealer doesn’t have a specific vehicle you’re interested in buying, the local dealer may be able to obtain one from another dealer. If long distance shipping is involved, however, that cost is likely to be tacked on to your purchase price. So, get that information up front and avoid an extra cost surprise. The special clear-out offer price is from the auto manufacturer, so the discounted price at the dealer level is still a suggested one, which means it’s negotiable. So, you may be able to drive an even better bargain. Family Cars: A $3,200 cash credit is offered on the mid trim level Comfortline edition of the Volkswagen Passat 2.5L with a manual transmission, which is listed at $25,975. This German-engineered and built-in-the-USA mid-sized sedan has a very roomy and well-finished interior. Kia is also offering up to $5,000 off the list price on selected editions of its Optima family sedan. This generation Optima got AJAC’s Best New Family Sedan Award when introduced in 2011 and there are no major changes to the 2015 edition. Optima MY2014 list prices range from $24,695 to $34,795. Luxury Cars: A whopping $10,000 can be lopped-off the list price of a loaded with features Infiniti Q70, a super-luxurious large sedan that prior to MY2014 was known as the Infiniti M37. The Q70 has distinctive flowing style lines and a long hood. It offers a nice blend of luxury and sportiness with strong powertrains and nimble handling characteristics. The only drawback is that you still have to come up with $52,237 plus fees and taxes. The Toyota Avalon ($37, 355) is a more affordable large luxury sedan alternative and a $4,000 cash credit (dropping its price to $33,355) makes it even more attractive. Toyota last redesigned Avalon for MY2013 and gave it a more sophisticated and sleeker look with upgraded in-cabin technology plus much-improved handling.

Sport Utility: Kia is offering a $5,000 cash credit or 2.99% financing for 84 months on its smallest utility vehicle, the Sportage. A revamp for the 2014 model year included an engine upgrade, revised styling and new features. The base engine is now a direct-injected 2.4-litre 4-cylinder engine that offers more power yet consumes less fuel. The top SX trim level is powered by a 260-hp turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and MY2014 list prices range between $22,995 to $38,295. The base LX front-drive version of the Honda CR-V (price $25,990 – the top line Touring trim is $35,790) can be purchased with 0.99% financing for 36 months. Redesigned for MY2014 this hugely popular compact utility has been a paragon of reliability
and is a benchmark for this class. The CR-V comes with a fuel-efficient 2.4-litre engine mated to a CVT automatic transmission. Trucks: The truck sector is a world onto itself when it comes to pricing, as the variety of models and options offered are staggering. Steering through the ordering process can be a challenge, but Chevrolet is offering cash credits ranging from $3,500 to $6,000 on the (redesigned last year) Silverado 1500. List prices range from $26,540 to $56,860. A $10,000 cash credit is also available on the Ram 1500 Quad Cab SXT 4x4. The base engine is a 3.6-litre V6. Optional engines are the venerable 5.7 litre Hemi V8, which comes with new FuelSaver technologies or a 3.0 litre EcoDiesel V6. MY2014 prices for the 1500 Quad Cab 4x4 range from $37,295 to $51,595. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

If my parting has left a void Then fill it with remembered joys A frienship shared, a laugh, a kiss Oh yes these things I too will miss Be not burdened with times of sorrow I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow My life’s been full, I savoured much Good friends, Good times, a loved ones touch Perhaps my times seemed all to brief Don’t lenghten it now with undue grief Lift up your hearts and peace to thee God wanted me now, he set me free

VAN LEEUWEN Johanna (Jenny) We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Johanna (Jenny) Van Leeuwen our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to many. She passed away peacefully in her 97th year, after a brief illness. She is predeceased by her husband of 62 years, Jake, and by her sons, Jack, Co, Pat and her daughter Atie Vanderwerf. She is survived by her children Mia Gordon (Gerry), Elli Paziuk (Gene), Gerry Van Leeuwen (Gail), Nick Van Leeuwen (Lynn), Jenny Popma (Eric) and by daughters-in-law, Linda Van Leeuwen, Joanne Van Leeuwen and Linda Greentree. She will be fondly remembered by her 25 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. She was a courageous and positive woman who faced and conquered many challenges in her life. She was born in Hazerswoude, the Netherlands and immigrated, to Canada in 1951 with her husband and six young children, in order to build a better future for the growing family. She always focused on the positives in life, was strengthened by her strong faith in God and lived her life fully - enjoying music, dancing, exercising, travel and especially social time with friends and family. Her enormous personality and friendly smile will be sorely missed by all who knew her. Her funeral mass will be held at the Good Shepherd Catholic Church @ 2250 150th St in South Surrey, on Tuesday Dec. 2nd at 11:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the White Rock South Surrey Hospice Society.
