Canada Post plans to build a new distribution facility in South Burnaby’s Big Bend industrial area. “I don’t have more specific details on this development, but I can tell you that the way Canadians use Canada Post has been changing. We see a lot fewer letters but at the same time the parcel business has been growing,” Knapik said. “We anticipate a growth in the parcels of about 20 per cent year over year this holiday season as Canadians embrace online shopping in Canada in a big way. We now use delivery agents in small vans to deliver both parcels and mail—our operational requirements are changing as our business evolves.”

Burnaby city hall will seek compensation for its “significant” costs to police the protest on Burnaby Mountain, said Mayor Derek Corrigan. The costs are being tracked for Burnaby RCMP and those officers from regional policing teams called in to assist. The city wants to recoup the costs from Kinder Morgan, the National Energy Board or the federal government, said Corrigan. “There will be a serious effort made to recoup those costs. The irony of having to spend a lot of money policing to have Kinder Morgan do something we’re opposed to isn’t lost on me,” he said. After trying to stop the pipeline company’s study work, to determine if it can route its proposed Trans Mountain pipeline expansion through Burnaby Mountain, the city was forced by a court order to allow it to go ahead.
