Panhandlers charged in stabbing at bus exchange

Soroptimists of the Langleys held their 10th annual candlelight vigil on Tuesday to promote awareness of violence against women. The event drew about 20 people to McBurney plaza on a cool and rainy evening. Nov. 25 is International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Langley RCMP have laid charges against two panhandlers, a man and a woman, believed to be responsible for robbing and stabbing a man after he didn’t give them ‘enough’ money at the Carvolth Bus Exchange on Nov. 15. Around 7 p.m. the two panhandlers approached the victim who was sitting in his parked vehicle and asked him for money. He did give them an amount of money, however the male suspect allegedly stabbed him in the arm wanting more, said police. As the two men struggled for his wallet, the female rummaged through the

vehicle for additional “loot,” said police. Once the male suspect removed the remaining money from the wallet, the pair ran westbound towards 200 Street. Police dogs established a short track to an abandoned home just west of the bus loop. Unfortunately, the suspects were not located at that time, said police. Through information sharing and a co-operative effort within the detachment, two people were suggested as possible suspects. The officers’ suspicions were confirmed when fingerprint impressions were developed from inside the vehicle. Continued Page 3

Two people from Chilliwack have been charged with trying to smuggle methamphetamine chemicals through the Aldergrove border crossing. The border was shut down for about an hour on Sunday night (Nov. 23) after U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers made the discovery in a 1994 Pontiac

Grand Am. The car arrived at the border around 7 p.m. with a plastic tote tub sealed with plastic wrap containing an unknown liquid and other suspicious materials in the rear seat area. A U.S. customs officer became ill after breathing fumes from the materials. The crossing was shut down in both directions and the officer was rushed to

The injured officer was “successfully treated,” the Blaine U.S. Customs and Border Protection office reported. The border was re-opened after about

an hour. The two occupants of the car were arrested. On Monday, 41-year-old Calum James Buchanan and 24-year-old Lola Crystal McKay, both from Chilliwack, appeared before a Whatcom County judge on a charge of possession with intent to manufacture. Continued Page 5

Burned body found near freeway Homicide investigators are looking for more information after a badly burned body was discovered at the side of the road, south of Highway One, in the 24700 block of 64 Avenue on Tuesday morning. “Evidence in the early stages suggested that the individual was a victim of homicide,” said Integrated Homicide Investigation Team Sgt. Jennifer Pound. “Due to the remains being badly burned there are a number of answers we require in order to move forward with this homicide investigation. A passerby found the human remains and called Langley RCMP around 10:30 a.m. “There is very little detail to be released at this stage and IHIT investigators will be relying heavily on an autopsy in order to obtain details about who this victim is,” said Pound. An autopsy is scheduled for Thursday (today.) IHIT is not releasing whether the victim is a man. Several police vehicles and what appeared to be forensic officers could be seen behind police tape at the bottom of a small dip in the road where it connected to 248 Street, just before the Highway 1 overpass. Anyone with information is asked to contact the IHIT tipline at 1-877-551-4448, or, if you wish to remain anonymous call Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477

Police vehicles and homicide investigators were called in after a passerby discovered a body on Tuesday along 64 Avenue, a dead end street which runs west off 248 Street, just south of the Highway 1 overpass. Little information was made available by IHIT.

Police to step up enforcement From Page 1

After a comparison process, it was determined the impressions belonged to Amanda Visona, 29, and 26-year-old Justin White. White and Visona have been charged with robbery and assault with a weapon. They are remanded in custody and will next appear in Surrey Provincial Court on Nov. 28. “This is the second incident of concern at the Carvolth Bus Exchange in the last month,” said Langley RCMP Supt. Murray Power. “I am very pleased with our members’ ability to not only solve the catalytic converter thefts but also solve this violent offence. Continued efforts will be made to keep this area safe for commuters.” A number of catalytic converters were being taken from vehicles parked at the transit exchange. As well, a significant number of car thefts have also been reported.

Langley man arrested after police cars rammed A 26-year-old Langley man has been charged in connection with a dramatic police incident which involved the suspect ramming a pickup truck into two police officers’ vehicles, leading to Mounties firing at him in Surrey on Friday, Nov. 21. Langley’s Daniel Monaghan has been charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, two of assaulting a peace officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, wilfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer, possessing a break-in instrument, and using an identity document without lawful excuse. Surrey’s David Traill, 52, is charged with being a passenger in a stolen vehicle, resisting arrest and breach of a conditional sentence order. The third suspect, a 21-year-old female, was released from custody, but may be charged at a later date. It was shortly after noon on Nov. 21 when plain-clothed RCMP officers in several vehicles cornered a suspect truck in the parking lot of the Cedar Tree Village apartment complex near King George Boulevard and 72 Avenue. Surrey RCMP said the pickup truck tried to flee, ramming two police vehicles. Police fired their guns, but no one was struck. Two officers were injured when their cars were rammed. They have since been released from hospital and are recovering from minor injuries.

Numerous firefighters responded to a house fire on 22 Avenue near 200 Street on Thursday, Nov. 20. Several pets were rescued from the fire, which apparently began in the garage.

The BC Wildlife Federation is offering a reward to a maximum of $2,000 to anyone reporting poachers who are found guilty of an offence under the Wildlife Act. This reward applies to the poaching of a rare pinto deer in Langley on Oct. 2. A man parked his pick up truck on a hill on 232 Street and shot across the road toward a field, killing the deer instantly. If you know who did this, report to RAPP (Report All Poachers and Polluters)1-877-7277.

Early garages in Willoughby, Fernridge, Aldergrove, Fort Langley and Murrayville were pictured in a display, which was the subject of much interest by those present, most of whom had firsthand connections to one or more of the garages. A guest book from a 1914 banquet in Langley honouring the beginnings of the community and the province was also on display. “It is truly our privilege to recognize our pioneers,” said Township MayL an gley Town ship pho to or Jack Froese. This year, the annual Douglas Day banquet sponsored by both Langley Township and Langley City recognized the community’s pioneer mechanics, the hardworking and dependable people who provided gasoline, repaired bicycles, maintained the family cars, and kept farm machinery running. Each year on Nov. 19, some very special people in the community are celebrated. They are recognized for all they have contributed, the knowledge they continue to share, and the hard work that went into making Langley the exceptional place that it is. Douglas Day marks the day that B.C. became a Crown colony at Fort Langley in 1858. The strong Langley connection to B.C.’s beginning has led the Township of Langley and City of Langley to commemorate its pioneers each year. Honoured are those who are at least 70 years of age and have lived in the community for at least 60 years. On Wednesday, Nov. 19, hundreds of pioneers and guests gathered at the Langley Events Centre for the annual celebration, where they enjoyed lunch, entertainment, special presentations, and a chance to catch up with old friends. Among the early-day mechanics and garages mentioned were the Reids and Seneys of Fort Langley, the Barrons of

dation of our community. Their hard work, traditions, and values can still be seen and felt here today, generations later. There is a lot of wisdom here, and we are grateful for everything our pioneers brought to Langley, and for the huge role they continue to play as we grow and look towards the future.” “Douglas Day is a wonderful opportunity to come together to honour our rich past, but also to celebrate our exciting future,” said Langley City Mayor Ted Schaffer. Douglas Day is named in honour of Governor James Douglas, whose proclamation at the Big House in Fort Langley — “The Birthplace of B.C.” — on Nov. 19, 1858 brought the Crown colony of British Columbia into being. Douglas Day has been recognized in the Township of Langley since the 1920s and the banquet has been held annually since 1946. Descendants of Douglas were present at the banquet. Rudy is ready to take the reins. Operation Red Nose volunteers will soon be back on the road for another holiday season, with service beginning this weekend and continuing into the wee hours of the New Year. Working in teams of three on Friday and Saturday nights throughout most of December, volunteers will be available to pick up holiday revelers in Langley, Surrey and White Rock and drive them home (or to their next party) in the client’s vehicle. As always, there is no charge for the service but donations will be accepted on behalf of Langley Gymnastics Foundation. For some, volunteering with Operation Red Nose has become a holiday tradition in itself. When Langley Gymnastics first began offering the safe-ride-home service more than a decade ago, it was primarily people involved with the club who volunteered. “Before, it was mostly gym parents,” said Jessica Marohn, co-ordinator of ORN Langley-Surrey. “Now different workplaces and organizations (are signing up) — groups who want to volunteer together,” she said. “It’s a fun way to spend an evening — and you get free food out of it.” Volunteer applications are coming in, but Marohn said the club can always use more. And it’s not just drivers and navigators they need. There are jobs to be done at headquarters, too, whether it’s taking calls, dispatching vehicles or ensuring that the other volunteers get fed. “Some people just don’t feel comfortable driving in the winter on icy roads,” said Marohn. Marohn expects the pace to pick up as people adjust to the idea that the holiday season is just around the corner. “Everyone’s thinking, ‘It can’t be Christmas already,” she said. But she urges people not to wait too long to sign up, because every volunteer is required to undergo a criminal record check through the RCMP. The check is offered at no charge to volunteers who provide a form, which is available on the ORN website. For those planning to take advantage of the service, it will be available this year on Nov. 28 and 29; Dec. 5 and 6; Dec. 12 and 13; Dec. 19 and 20 and on New Year’s Eve. Brydon Lagoon task force approved B REN D A AN D E R SO N Ti m e s Re po r t e r

Langley City council has given the green light to a task force that will look into solutions for an ailing Brydon Lagoon. However, potential members are already being warned to manage their expectations. At its final meeting of the 201114 term, council gave unanimous approval to the appointment of a Brydon Lagoon task force and to the terms of reference under which it will work. The main focus of the Brydon Lagoon Task Force, which will have among its members representatives from several environmental organizations, will be to review findings of a pond management strategy written in 2013 and to identify which of the study’s recommendations should be pursued, City engineer Rick Bomhof told council on Monday night. The task force will also be asked to look at other existing reports and documents, identify gaps in information and gather local knowledge about the lagoon, where thousands of fish died last August following an extended period of warm weather. The committee will include

two representatives each from the City’s Parks Environment Advisory Committee (PEAC) and the Langley Field Naturalists, as well as a single representative each from the Langley Environmental Partners Society, Nicomekl Enhancement Society and Ducks Unlimited. Up to two people will also be appointed from the general public and two City staff members will sit on the task force in an advisory capacity. Additionally, one City council member will serve as a liaison on the task force. That person will be selected once the new council is sworn in on Dec. 1. The job of the task force is to offer possible solutions to prevent another massive fish kill in the pond and to help improve its overall health, however members must understand that their recommendations are subject to prioritization, said Councillor Gayle Martin. Among the suggestions that have been made already is that the lagoon be dredged. Over the years, sediment has been building up on its bottom, through the decay of plant life and particles being washed in through storm drains. Shallow water heats quickly

and decaying plant life consumes valuable oxygen — both of which are detrimental to fish and other aquatic life, environmental groups have argued. However, council has balked at the idea because of the potential costs associated with dredging, which have been estimated to be in the millions of dollars. Any recommendations will have to be weighed against other projects, Martin said, adding she’s concerned that if council doesn’t approve a task force recommendation “it could be seen that we don’t care. “There’s no guarantee (something) will get done if the funding is not there,” said Martin. However, Langley Field Naturalist and Brydon Lagoon activist Rhys Griffiths, who led a group of about 45 people on a tour of the pond on Oct. 1, said money should not be an object when it comes to brainstorming solutions. Once its membership has been established, the task force is scheduled to begin meeting in February, 2015. It will review documents and summarize comments and recommendations over the next four months, with its final report expected to be submitted in June, 2015.

Former Langley RCMP Insp. Amrik Virk, who is now a Surrey MLA and the minister of advanced education, simply can’t shake his pursuers. Opposition critics have dogged him for months over his actions while a member of the Kwantlen Polytechnic University board of directors. Those actions centred around extra payments to try and entice top people to come to work for the university. Word is now coming out that Virk was directly involved in the discussions by the Kwantlen board in 2011 as to how to get around the provincial salary guidelines. An email exchange involving Virk was revealed by the NDP on Monday. He and other members of the board were trying to get around guidelines set by the province, to try and keep salary spending at post-secondary institutions in check. An earlier internal investigation by assistant deputy minister Rob Mingay determined board members were not involved in decisions to pay executives more than provincial rules allowed. The email seems to contradict that finding. Virk said he had forgotten about the email. Finance Minister Mike de Jong has now asked Mingay to reopen the investigation. Given the fact that Virk is now the minister in charge of advanced education, and ultimately the enforcer of salary guidelines, his hold on his portfolio is shaky at best. Perhaps the best option for Premier Christy Clark, who is the ultimate decider, would be to move Virk to another portfolio. He still has a lot to offer to cabinet.

Question langeytimes.com

of the week

In the light of his passing, should Pat Quinn be named to the Hockey Hall of Fame?

Answer online at www.langleytimes.com

Value of dissent they

Is there a place for acts of conscience in our society? Protesters on Burnaby Mountain have proven they feel strongly enough about stopping a proposed Kinder Morgan oil pipeline that they are willing to be arrested. No doubt there are many who will dismiss their protests as foolish and misguided. Others will not envy the hassles that inevitably attend being arrested and charged. But there are those, too, who will view their actions as heroic and principled, and will privately wish that they had the courage to take a stand against something they feel, on a very deep and fundamental level, is wrong. To those arrested, it is all the price of making a statement. It is not a price they wish to pay. It is one, they say, they feel compelled to endure. Their actions force us to assess where we stand on the issue — or indeed any issue that disturbs us. They pose questions that are not easy to answer, that call for considerable soul-searching. How many of us would be willing to put our comfort and name on the line, to back our word — easily given — with unequivocal action? And what would be the tipping point that would compel each of us to similar protest? Although Kinder Morgan president Ian Anderson says the company wants to respect the “right of peaceful protest,” the fact is that our society gives scant respect to protest, peaceful or not. Many of us leap to label protesters ‘wing-nuts’ and bandy the term ‘professional protester’ as though the existence of such a thing would nullify all right to protest. Dissent is not popular in our society. The conventional wisdom is that governments always have good and just reasons to act as they do, that lies are never told to voters and that business interests always act for the good of humanity. Anyone who believes otherwise is swiftly dismissed as a conspiracy theorist. Yet we have discovered time and time again that governments can be wrong, and that conspiracies — sometimes on a grand scale — do exist. If the past 100 years of world history has taught us nothing else, it has taught us that. Protests may be discomfiting. Protests may be foolish. There may be better ways to argue the rights and wrongs without chaining ourselves to railings and trees. But without the right to dissent, without the right to protest, we have no business pretending we live in a democracy. — Peace Arch News

Some additional details on Aldergrove historic house Editor: Re: “Aldergrove house now a designated heritage site,” (The Times, Nov. 13). We were very pleased to see the Shortreed house in Aldergrove designated as a heritage site, even though it has been moved from its original site. However, some of the information in the story is incorrect. Some of the following details come from the Aldergrove history book “A Place Between.” The confusion concerning James’ brother Robert Jr. and father, Robert C. Sr. may be excusable, but the house was located on the homestead land of James’ father, Robert C. Sr., on Jackman Road (now 272 St.). Robert Jr. lived on what is now Shortreed

Corners, where he also had 160 acres of land which he was homesteading. Robert Jr. was the the proprietor of the general store on the corner of what is now 264 St. and Fraser Highway (what was then Old Yale Road), and his land was to the south and west of the corner. Robert Jr. came to the area 36 years before his death in 1924 , but he moved to Abbotsford and was acting as a Justice of the Peace and a Customs agent there for 24 years before his death. James was the the youngest son of Robert Sr. and came to the Aldergrove area with his parents at age 14, in 1885, a year later than his oldest brother, Robert Jr., who was 13

years older than him. The woman who would become James’ wife, Laura Perry, lived at Robert Jr.’s and was the first to operate the telegraph system in 1901. While all the Shortreed brothers, Robert Jr., John, Duncan, Tomas and Findley were able to get a homestead quarter (160 acres) of land in the Aldergrove area, James was too young and when he finally came of age there was no longer any homestead land available. Therefore James went up to work at Rock Bay as a railway boss in a logging firm, along with brothers, John and Findley. Findley was killed there when a train rolled down the track and killed him.

But James was sending some of his earnings home to his father and mother while he worked. It was with the promise that the home land would be his when his father no longer needed it. His father, Robert C. Sr. died in 1908 and his mother, Margaret in 1916. James and Laura then came to back Aldergrove and moved the original homestead house of Robert and Margaret off of the site, to the north about 500 feet, for James’ widowed sister Christie Deans and her family to live in. James then began to build his new home with top quality lumber he had secured at Rock Bay. He always said; “I defy any one to find

RANGE OF ACTIVITIES OFFERED AT NO CHARGE Families are invited to grab the kids, strap on some skates, and Try it! at the Langley Events Centre. On Saturday (Nov. 29), the Township of Langley and local organizations are teaming up to offer a number of activities that people of all ages can try for free. Registration is not required and visitors can simply show up between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the LEC (7888 200 St.) for a chance to experience something new. “The Try it! fair is designed to get people interested in things they haven’t done before,” said

Township of Langley community recreation programmer Stephany Eby. “We hope they find something new that they can enjoy with their families, something fun that will help keep them healthy and active. “Our goal is to have everyone who attends try at least one new sport, and this year we are highlighting ice events,” said Eby, noting that participants can try hockey, skating, and ringette. They will also have the opportunity to meet past Olympians, who will be on hand to share their love of sport.

Visitors can play games with some of Langley’s sports teams, and have a chance to win prizes. The Township of Langley has been holding Try it! Fairs since 2009 and this is the third time the free event has been held in conjunction with Sports Day in Canada, a national celebration of the power of sports to build communities and get Canadians moving. The official day caps off a week of more than 1,000 events across the nation. For more information, visit tol.ca/events or call 604-4558821.

The result is open floorplans with more light, more living space, more storage, a main-floor powder room, and a way of life that feels just right. The result is Mason&Green.

Unanimous adoption of the new student anti-harassment and anti-discrimination policy was greeted with applause by people in the audience at final meeting of the current Langley Board of Education on Oct. 28. The new policy carries specific language around the LGBTQ community in Langley schools, and the inclusive nature of the document is meant to protect all students. “These changes will better all students,” said Trustee Megan Dykeman. “I spoke to students about this

Ledingham McAllister gives the gift of saving this season eason n Sometimes the best gifts are the ones that can’t fit under the tree. From now until December 18, buyers are able to save up to $10,000 off their new home purchase at any one of the Ledingham McAllister communities. There will be a box available to draw from containing “Christmas Crackers,” that enclose a voucher revealing the

savings. When a new home purchase is finalized, the savings will be applied against the balance owing for the home’s purchasers. Senior Vice President, Marketing and Design of Ledingham McAllister, Manuela Mirecki, says that this is a new promotion in reaction to the fact that in the last couple of years they experi-

enced a surprising number of people purchasing homes in the days leading up to the holidays. “Most communities for sale wind down their sales program at this time of year, so we thought it would be a fantastic opportunity for our future home owners.” There are seven beautiful and diverse developments with the perfect

GVHBA - keeping families warm this winter… That time of year is upon us; when temperatures drop, the snow falls and presents are bought to put beneath the Christmas tree. For many however, now begins the time of worry – how will I keep my family warm this winter? Or, how I can I make the holidays special for my children? For 19 years, the Greater Vancouver Home Builders’ Association (GVHBA) in support of the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau has been helping families in need answer those questions and feel the warmth of not only a coat, but the love of the community. The Coats for Kids campaign allows GVHBA members to volunteer the use of their store front locations so that their employees and the public can donate gently used winter coats and mittens for kids and teenagers. 45 member companies at 61 locations in 13 municipalities will serve as coat drop-off sites from November 24 to December 4. CEO with GVHBA, Bob de Wit says that the number of donations has soared off the charts from several dozen in the early years to

several thousand last year. “It’s amazing to see the impact - families literally are transformed, not just by the warm apparel but by the spirit of giving that these donations embody,” he says. “The first time I visited the Lower Mainland Christmas Bureau’s warehouse, I thought I had stumbled into Santa’s workshop! The scale of the effort and the buzz of energy there really hit it home for me about the deep need we’re filling in the Metro Vancouver region.” He recalls a year when a young family had just moved to Canada from a tropical ical country. They were severely unprepared for their first Canadian winter, armed with only light jackets for the plummeting temperatures. GVHBA asked if TQ Construction could somehow assist this family, to which TQ’s president and owner, Helene Belisle, immediately accepted. Warm

winter jackets were quickly supplied for the whole family, and TQ’s Office Manager, Kim Boer, even added a scarf and gloves set for the mother – a little extra gift from one mother to another. “By the end of the day, the young family was bundled up in their new jackets,” says de Wit. “They were able to feel the generosity from their community and ready for their first winter in their new home country.” Parents are often looking after their children to make sure they properly dressed for the cold, but when it comes to teens, they are frequently more difficult to clothe. This year’s theme is “Zippers Zipping Buttons Buttoning and Hoodies for Teens,” and focuses on a demographic who are just as

interested in how they look as how warm they feel. The solution? Donate an item that is perfectly comfortable without compromising style – the almighty “Hoodie.” “And buttons buttoning and zippers zipping, that is just our way to make sure what is passed on is gently used,” says de Wit, “because no one wants get a great coat that doesn’t zip up.” This year the GVHBA isn’t just collecting coats; they are also looking for other quality clothing, blankets, mittens, hats and new toys. With Christmas right around the corner, de Wit says that new toys are especially welcome. “This winter season, take the opportunity to pass along those coats your kids have outgrown,” he says. “It is a simple way to warm one’s heart, and with all the GVHBA member drop-off locations, giving is effortless.” For a full list of participating GVHBA locations and times visit: www.gvhba.org

Wildlife art exhibit at Open Road Infiniti this weekend

After a successful fourth annual Artists for Conservation Festival, the world-class art exhibit will make an encore appearance at OpenRoad Infiniti in Langley starting on Thursday, Nov. 27. The exhibit includes some of the latest original artworks by leading nature and wildlife artists from around the world. Accompanying the four-day exhibit will be live birds of prey, music, and a chance to mingle with some of the artists. “The reaction to this year’s bear-themed festival was overwhelmingly positive,” said Jeff Whiting, founder and president of Artists for Conservation.

“Each year, our goal is to share the conservation message through art to a broader audience. Our partnership with OpenRoad Infiniti allows us to do just that.” Artists for Conservation is a team dedicated to generating awareness and stimulating discussion on an array of conservation issues and this year, a major focus was put on bears. The importance of bears as indicators of a healthy environment, combined with the recent controversy around bear trophy hunting in British Columbia prompted the focus of this year’s festival. The extended exhibit at Open

Road Infiniti will support AFC’s youth art and environmental education program by raising funds and awareness for Artists for Conservation programs. “Through our partnership with Artists for Conservation, we’re excited to help spread their message of conservation and environmental education to the customers and residents of the Langley and surrounding communities,” said Sharon Rupal, General Manager of OpenRoad Infiniti. “In order to further support the Artists for Conservation continued programs, during the span of the exhibit OpenRoad Infiniti will donate $25 each time an Infiniti

hybrid or any other 2015 Infiniti vehicle is test driven at the dealership.” Original art pieces in the exhibit are available for sale, with 40 per cent of all sales directly supporting Artists for Conservation’s youth and environmental education programs. Several AFC artists will be in attendance over the course of the four-day exhibit. The festival opens to public at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 27 and runs until 4 p.m. on Nov. 30 at OpenRoad Infiniti in Langley. For detailed festival information, schedule and updates, visit: artistsforconservation.org/openroad.

City recognized once again for Brownfield strategy The City of Langley is once again being recognized for its work in brownfield redevelopment. On Nov. 17, the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) announced the winners of its 2015 Sustainable Communities Awards, recognizing innovation and excellence in municipal sustainable development in six categories: brownfields, energy, neighbourhood development, transportation, waste and water. The City of Langley was singled out for the ambitious plans outlined in its Brownfield Redevelopment Strategy — a document it introduced in December, 2012. Brownfields are defined as “abandoned, vacant, derelict or underutilized commercial or industrial properties, where past actions have resulted in actual or perceived contamination, and where there is an active potential for redevelopment.” Property in the City which is deemed most appropriate for brownfield development lies north of Fraser Highway, between Glover Road and 200 Street — particularly in the light industrial area along Logan Avenue. By redeveloping such properties, the City hopes to improve its overall appearance and raise its tax base. The City has previously been recognized for its brownfield strategy by the Canadian Urban Institute, which awarded the municipality a “Brownie” award in October, 2013, and again last June, when it received a BC Economic Development Community Project Award. “Together, this year’s winning communities stand out as leading examples of how citizens, stakeholders and municipal councils can work together on a range of sustainability initiatives,” said Brad Woodside, FCM President and Mayor of City of Fredericton, N.B. “It’s one thing to have a vision for a sustainable project — it’s quite another to engage citizens, stakeholders and council in making it a reality. As FCM president, I have been across this country and met municipal officials and citizens from the smallest towns to the largest cities, from remote

northern areas, to rural coastal villages, to bustling urban centres. These award-winning projects are inspiring for all community leaders, and they demonstrate that municipalities are on the frontlines in facing environmental challenges.” The City is among nine winners and one honourable mention that will be formally recognized at a special ceremony and in workshops planned for the FCM Sustainable Communities Conference (SCC), taking place Feb. 10 to 12 in Ontario. They will also be showcased over the coming months through case studies, videos, and as part of FCM’s free webinars. “Through its Awards program, the SCC, and Green Municipal Fund program activities, FCM offers valuable resources to help communities build local capacity to invest in sustainable infrastructure,” said Raymond Louie, Chair of the Green Municipal Fund Council and Councillor for the City of Vancouver, BC. “I encourage elected municipal officials and municipal staff, as well as their private-sector partners and other collaborators to come to the SCC, meet the award winners in person and learn from them directly.” A complete list of 2015 FCM Sustainable Communities Awards winners can be found online at langleytimes.com.

Violet Cejalvo was seven years old when her parents told her to go and get her bike because they were going to a special place. The place turned out to be a BMX track. Unsure of what she was getting into, she gave it a shot. “It was really hard because I didn’t have a proper bike,” she explained. “I just had a mountain bike.” But after that first experience, she was hooked. “It was a really cool sport that not many people do, so I wanted to get involved.” Now competing

on a proper bike, the 12-year-old is making a name for herself. The seasoned competitor took top spot in her class last month in Chilliwack at the BMX Canadian grand nationals. With just 40 points on the season separating the top three racers, Cejalvo needed a victory in the final race and she delivered, leading from start to finish to capture her first national title. And the bigger the race, the more excited Cejalvo gets. “I’m a very competitive person, so I like to go to the big races,” she explained. Up next is the 2014 BMX USA grand na-

Competing in the U.S. is nothing new as Cejalvo races for Staats Bicycles, a team based out of Camarillo, Calif. She hopes to turn pro one day in the sport. To do so, Cejalvo is spending between 24 and 30 hours per week racing, practicing or exercising. She also likes to race against the boys. “When I race the boys, it is a little bit more challenging, but it pushes me to be a better rider,” she said.

really strong for us and we had good passing for the win.” Johnson said Langley Christian was tough to beat. It’s been an amazing season for the Titans who won the Fraser Valley championships this month. It’s been a battle of the Langley schools before, with the Titans up against Langley Christian Lighting in the Langley district title. In that tournament, Titans also came out on top. But both teams went into the finals playing very strong. The key to having such a successful run is that returning players from last year tasted a near win in their loss to MEI in semi-finals 2013. “I think when you go through that and get that close, the boys really drew on that and came up so strong. The key to our game is good passing and if we can run the middle fast we have good offence and we are tough to beat,” said Johnson. Titan middle Phil Stahl was named the provincial tournament MVP. First all-stars in the tournament were Titans Max Heppell and Zec Johnson.

Lights, camera, action at the La La Land auto show Los Angeles, The 2014 International debuted vehicles that won’t) be streets near

California: Los Angeles Auto Show some brilliant will (and coming to the you.

Whether it’s an all-new sedan/coupe, a car that will by Alexandra Straub take you from point A to B, or a vehicle that was designed for the virtual world, the Golden State’s auto show had all of the above and more. Here’s a look at what the North American manufacturers have been up to in the last while. Cadillac ATS-V Coupe and Sedan The long anticipated “V” series of ATS sedan and coupe is just around the corner. When Cadillac’s ATS hit the streets two years ago, it not only impressed the journalistic community, but buyers alike. It even earned the title of the 2013 North American Car of the Year, and rightfully so. Now the ATS comes with more potency, more performance, and a lot more of everything. The ATS-V will introduce class-leading twin-turbocharged power and a comprehensive suite of design and performance systems when production begins in spring 2015. Under its carbon fibre hood – a standard feature on all ATS-V models – is a newly developed 3.6L, V6 with an impressive 455 horsepower and 445 lb-ft of torque. The well–endowed engine can then be matched with either a 6-speed manual (yay, a manual!) or a paddle-shift eight-speed automatic transmission featuring launch control and Performance Algorithm Shift. It looks beautiful and I can’t wait to get behind its wheel. The crowd was also assured they wouldn’t be disappointed. I am counting the minutes. Ford Explorer The 2016 Ford Explorer was introduced at 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show to an excited crowd. With a fresh look, a newly available 2.3-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder engine (expected to deliver approximately 270 horsepower and at least 300 lb.-ft. of torque, an increase of 13 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively, over the 2.0-litre EcoBoost), and an all-new, range-topping Platinum series, this SUV keeps getting better. It improves on many different levels. For example, for the first time, a four-cylinder Explorer will be available with Ford’s intelligent four-wheel-drive system and will be able to tow up to 3,000 pounds (1,361 kgs.), outperforming the current Explorer equipped with 2.0-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder. Furthermore, this sixth generation SUV – which has been selling for over 25 years and is available in over 100 markets worldwide – will come equipped with ability to park itself, if you happen to select the Platinum edition. The system helps the driver parallel park or perpendicular park using ultrasonic sensors and electric power-assisted steering. Park-out assist uses sensors to assist in pulling out of parallel parking spots. All you have to do is control the throttle and brake. continued on page 34

Ford Shelby GT350 Mustang A friend of mine named her daughter Shelby. Yes, after the Mustang. She likes cars, too. Aside from it being an icon of North American culture, it also represents how engineers continue to push the envelope in regards to engine development. The GT350 is powered by a unique, high-revving flat-plane crankshaft 5.2-litre V8 engine that will produce more than 500 horsepower – the most powerful naturally aspirated Ford production engine ever. No turbochargers necessary! The Shelby GT350 Mustang is the latest in an all-new line of Mustang fastback and convertible models, including the specially designed 50th Anniversary Edition Mustang.

The Langley Times www.langleytimes.com

Fun fact, more than 9.2 million Mustangs have been sold since the car’s 1964 debut.

You have helped us give hope to so many over the past 5 years!

Chevrolet Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo As a kid, I would envision myself as a cartoon/video game character. Maybe it’s because I often become so animated. Okay, bad joke, but it’s sometimes nice to see make-believe come to life. The Chaparral 2X Vision Gran Turismo concept is a car that was designed for the virtual world, and for young ones, or the young at heart to play with in the comfort of their living room. As cool as the Chev Chaparral concept is, I am not sure I’d really love to drive a car that I sit head first in – think of the Olympic sport – the skeleton! And mid-mounted laser, beamed-energy propulsion system might take some getting used to. But heck, it’s worth a go! Regardless, the concept was developed as part of the Vision Gran Turismo project, which celebrates the future of automotive design and innovation. The Chaparral 2X VGT concept is inspired by the innovative racecars Chaparral Racing and Chevrolet partnered on more than 45 years ago.

Special Thanks to our major corporate partners: Canadian Tire

Gamers can race the Chaparral 2X VGT this Christmas season by downloading an online update for Gran Turismo 6.

Chevrolet Colorado ZR2 Concept

JD Farms

I can’t count how many times I’ve encountered a concept and wished upon shooting stars for it to become a production vehicle.

Langley Advance

Well, perhaps, this one might (fingers crossed) come true. After all, a few components of the all-new midsized Colorado are coming to life. We just have to wait a little while for it. One of those magical parts is the 2.8L Duramax diesel, which is expected to be outfitted in the truck sometime in 2015 for the 2016 model year. That diesel packs an estimated 181 horsepower at 3,400 rpm and 369 lb-ft of torque at 2,000 rpm for your towing pleasure. The 2.8L Duramax diesel is part of a new, global family of turbo-diesel four-cylinder engines designed to deliver more-efficient capability. When looking at it, well, it’s not your ordinary truck. The Colorado ZR2 wears a concept Cyprus Green exterior color, with Henna Orange accents and custom ZR2 identification on the rear fenders, tailgate and grille. Not to mention a sizeable set of off-road ready tires; a set of 275/65R18 off-road rubbers mounted on custom 18-inch aluminum multi-spoke, bead-lock-style wheels. alexandra.straub@drivewaybc.ca
