The president’s message
DCBIA It’s amazing to think that another year is almost to an end and the New Year will soon be upon us. Downtown Courtenay has seen many successful events in 2014 and with the Holiday Season within our grasp we are looking forward to even more fantastic family fun. Moonlight & Magic kicked off the season last week with a 2 day blitz of culture and community spirit with the Comox Valley Christmas Parade closing out the weekend. An “Old Fashioned Christmas” will be celebrated from December 19th to December 21st, the last weekend before Christmas, with events celebrated the old-fashioned way to recognize the City of Courtenay’s 100th birthday, In 2015 we will be celebrating
WinterJam100 with indoor and outdoor events scheduled every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings in the month of January. And, I would be remiss if I did not mention the City of Courtenay’s Centennial downtown celebrations that will take place in and around Canada Day. Please visit our website regularly at www.downtowncourtenay. com for updated information on both of these events. This year has also brought many changes to the downtown. We have seen many new stores and services open their doors for business in 2014, and we also celebrated those who have been in business for many years, even decades. We have also seen a change in the look of the downtown with decora-

I spend many hours talking to locals and tourists alike, and what I am hearing is: “This is the most wonderful, eclectic, heartwarming downtown that I have seen.” All of the events and the new changes that I have previously mentioned can do nothing but keep enhancing our beautiful downtown core and make sure that Downtown Courtenay is a welcoming, celebrated destination, and the regional centre for business, culture, services, dining and amenities.

African Safari
with Square 1 Travel Renée Andor SPECIAL TO THE RECORD
Nearly two months after her African safari holiday Square 1 Travel’s Louise DeArmond is still absolutely astounded by her experience. Ever since she watched Born Free when she was a little girl, DeArmond dreamt of going on an African safari. Her dream finally came true in September when she travelled to Kenya and Tanzania for a two-week safari with her husband and a group of 10 friends and clients. “It was fabulous,” says DeArmond. “I always wanted to see the animals running free ... There’s no better feeling than seeing these animals and the baby animals trotting along next to them, in the wild doing what they do.”
The trip included one week in Kenya and one week in Tanzania spent riding in Jeeps, with guides ensuring they saw plenty of wildlife. One standout moment was a close encounter with a pride of lions when travelling through Tanzania’s Ngorongoro Crater. “We could get so close to them when they turned off the (Jeep) engines, you could hear the cubs,” she says. “They were playing together at the edge of the water, squealing as little kittens do ... It was just so cool because they didn’t even know that we were there.” Another highlight was a hot air balloon ride, again in Tanzania, which gave the group a bird’s-eye view of the Great Wildebeest Migration, the largest migration in the world.

SPECIAL TO THE RECORD
Buying local is so important to Greg Wilson that almost all of what he sells in his shop, The Butcher’s Block, is found within 100 miles of it. Alberta is the furthest afield Wilson brings product in from, and that’s strictly for the province’s famed high quality beef. His pork comes from the Valley’s Tannadice Farms and Hertel’s in Port Alberni. Chicken comes from various producers in the Valley, Vancouver Island, and the Fraser Valley. He also brings in grass-fed, organic beef and grain-fed beef from Valley farmers. “Economics,” Wilson says when asked why buying local is important to him. It’s “supporting the neighbours. Lots of people we buy
off are customers of ourselves.” “No matter what I buy, I make sure it’s in town... it’s supporting your neighbour, absolutely; it’s good economic sense.” The eggs, cheese, yoghurt, produce, curries, Asian fare and sauces and rubs he sells are local, too. As for his deli lunch menu, the meat in The Butcher’s Block sandwiches is smoked in-house and the bread is sourced from Comox Valley bakeries. The Butcher’s Block offers daily house-made soup and sandwich specials for lunch, plus meat pies, snacks, salads, take-n-bake entrees like lasagna and chili, as well as catering services. There’s a large selection of sausage and pepperoni made in-house, and of course, the shop has a wide variety of meat cuts, from steaks to roasts and ev-

We nurture your Mind, Body and Soul Skin and beauty care treatments
Renée Andor SPECIAL TO THE RECORD
Keeping abreast of new treatments and technologies is one of Roche Borowicz’s top priorities as a clinical esthetician. The owner/operator of Spa Roché started out her education 15 years ago by obtaining a diploma from CIDESCO — which is the world’s major international beauty therapy association, based in Zurich, Switzerland. Although she’s been living in the Comox Valley for the past four years and opened Spa Roché three years ago, she continues to increase her knowledge of non-surgical skincare treatments. “Industry creates new (technology); that’s why you have to continue to educate yourself,” says Borowicz. “So, I go to a lot of international shows or workshops to educate myself... that’s very important.” A few of Spa Roché’s skincare services include microdermabrasion, chemical peels, removal of minor skin irregularities like skin tags and broken capillaries and treatment of skin problems like acne and sensitivity.
Spa Roché also offers a selection of permanent makeup services including eyeliner, eyebrow shading, and lip colour to permanently enhance those facial features and eliminate the need for a daily makeup routine. A recent addition to her menu is a non-surgical facelift through the process of micro-needling, which naturally stimulates the skin to increase blood flow to the area, promoting rejuvenation. As well as serving clients from Vancouver Island, Borowicz continues to treat past clients from when she operated out of Calgary and Toronto. They either fly to the Valley for treatments or she treats them when she travels to do workshops. Many of her clients come via referral from past clients. Spa Roché also offers other services like eyelash extensions and waxing. For a full list of treatments, visit www.sparoche.com or call 250-871-5558. Spa Roché is located at 222 Fifth St.

Coast Realty Group celebrates 25th Anniversary OF 'SHARING THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT' HAMPER PROGRAM The numbers are in. On its 25th anniversary, the "Sharing the Christmas Spirit" hamper campaign has successfully delivered nearly 600 hampers full of food, toys and other gifts to local families in need. Rob Phillips, who coordinates the program along with his co-workers at Coast Realty Group, says the program has never run more smoothly. He credits its efficient and enduring success to the scores of dedicated volunteers. "We rely on so many people to help us organize the program," says Phillips. "We have about 30 core members who are involved in the lead-up, and then on delivery day we have about 50 cadets and all of our volunteer drivers. There are easily 100 people – it's incredible!" Two volunteers in particular, Ken and Fay Jones, have for 17 years been the "warehouse" supervisors
and a huge part of the program's success. The "Mr. and Mrs. Claus" of the program, devotes up to six days a week to the program for the three weeks leading up to delivery day. The bulk of last year's 570 hampers were distributed in just two hours on December 21. Most went to families of three or more and contained hand-chosen items collected from a personalized list so the children received age – and gender-appropriate gifts. "Through our registration program, we take enough information so that we know where to deliver each hamper and what the generic

family make-up is so the sponsor has some idea about what gifts to get," explains Phillips. "The program has come a long way from the days when Tucky Schellinck collected items in her basement!" Back in 1962, well-known community member Tucky Schellinck began accumulating and distributing items throughout the year. In 1988, she handed off her duties to local Realtors Brent and Donna Cunliffe, who turned it into a Christmas program. Coast Realty Group, which celebrates its own 30th anniversary this year, has been co-ordinating the program for the past 18 years. Annette Bowden, an administrator with Coast Realty Group, has
been personally involved with the Sharing the Christmas Spirit program for 24 years, making her one of the program's longest-serving volunteers. While the program is much more organized and streamlined than when it first began, she notes, every year is special in its own way. "The number of businesses, individuals and schools that are involved – it truly is an amazing community effort," remarks Bowden. "All of us at Coast Realty Group just feel so proud to be a part of it. Like our motto says, it's all about people above all." The Sharing the Christmas Spirit hamper program starts organizing every September, with registration for individuals and families in need beginning November 1st. For more information on the program, or to get involved, call 250-897-3999 or visit www.coastrealty.com.

In Middle Age Europe, socks were strips of cloth wrapped around feet and legs but were then called "leggings" and had to be held up by a type of garter. As styles changed and breeches became shorter, socks began to get longer. Sometime around the 12th century feet were added to the sock or legging. Around 1490, often made from beautiful silks, wool and velvet, leggings were joined with breeches forming one garment which became TIGHTS. In that day it was the common style that each leg of the tight was a different colour. In 1598, William Lee, an English clergyman, invented a knitting machine (smart man).
