SUPREME COURT CONSIDERS ASSISTED SUICIDE

Debating the right to die MP Lunney, Parksville man have differing views on the subject CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

The decision is expected to take months, but the outcome could change the course of Canadian history. The Supreme Court of Canada is currently debating medicallyassisted death in a case that would make the practise legal on a federal level, altering the way Canadians live and die. On Oct. 15, the B.C. Civil Liberties Association and two British Columbian families took to the highest court to make their landmark death-with-dignity case. According to a BCCLA news release, the association and the families are arguing that the current legislation banning assisted suicide violates the rights of terminally ill Canadians who wish to die on their own terms, and those laws are unfair to terminally ill people who do not have the means to take their own I think that creating lives. mechanisms to kill people, On the other hand, the federal rather than sustaining life, government argues that the only way is tragedy in itself to protect vulnerable Canadians is by JAMES LUNNEY enforcing a total ban on medically assisted suicide. Nanaimo-Alberni Member of Parliament James Lunney echoed his government’s sentiments. “Humans have dignity because they are human and respect for life requires we don’t intentionally kill another human being,” Lunney, a Conservative MP, told The NEWS from Ottawa earlier this month, stating he supports the current legislation banning assisted suicide. “We’ll all die some day and as a health care practitioner my vision is to see people live well until they die,” he said, adding he doesn’t “subscribe to the hopeless view.” Lunney said we need to focus on living not on dying. “I think that (for physicians to be focussed on) creating mechanisms to kill people, rather than sustaining life, is tragedy in itself … I won’t do anything to contribute to that as long as this debate goes on.” But 86-year-old Parksville resident Bill Martin takes issue with Lunney’s stance. STARTING POINT

Fire and Ice Fest needs some volunteers

The Fire and Ice Festival is looking for volunteers to fill up the event’s executive board. In particular, they are looking for a volunteer co-ordinator, secretary and treasurer. “There’s a natural turnover,” said chair Jim Lynch. As reported in The NEWS in Jan. 2013, the Fire and Ice Festival was cancelled in 2013 due to lack of volunteers and support. It was a success once again when it returned in 2014. While Lynch said there is “no danger” of a cancellation this year, he did say help is always appreciated. As such, all interested people are encouraged to contact Lynch, who said there are always jobs to fill. The board will start looking for volunteers to participate in the actual Fire and Ice event closer to the festival’s date in May. For more information, contact Lynch at jim@nrisl.ca. — NEWS Staff

Alzheimer’s Society also needs some help Are you interested in making a profound difference in the lives of your friends and neighbours? If so, volunteering with the Central Island branch of the non-profit Alzheimer Society of B.C. may be for you. The Society needs a facilitator for its caregiver support group in Parksville. The volunteer position involves leading a monthly meeting, communicating with local Support and Education Coordinator Jane Hope on a regular basis, maintaining group attendance records and using Society materials to provide information to the group. “It’s very rewarding work,” says Hope. “You’re enriching the lives of others.” For more information and to volunteer, call 1-800-462-2833 or jhope@alzheimerbc.org.

NDP in ‘a state of crisis’ CANDACE WU

Vancouver Island is a “bastion of strength for B.C. Conservatives,” according to party leader Dan Brooks. The provincial Conservatives, who hold zero seats in the Legislature, hosted their annual general meeting at Tigh-Na-Mara in Parksville Saturday where approximately 100 Conservative Party cardholders came together from all over

British Columbia. Brooks made a speech focussing on two things: Vancouver Island as a potential hotbed for Conservative candidates to win seats in the 2017 election and what the leader sees as “a state of crisis” for the provincial NDP. “Vancouver Island makes up 24 per cent of our membership,” Brooks said to loud applause. “Vancouver Island is accountable for 53 per cent of our new memberships.”

Current laws ‘archaic’ CONTINUED FROM PAGE A1

“I wish he was in my shoes right now,” Martin told The NEWS Friday afternoon responding to the MP’s position. Martin suffers from spinal degeneration after a long career spent as a heavy duty mechanic. He said his bones are “crushed” and he’s had three operations leaving him in constant discomfort. “I am definitely for it (medically assisted death),” he said. “How dare anyone tell us we cannot be put out of our misery when we are suffering so badly.” Martin called Canada’s current legislation “archaic.” He’s been advocating for medically assisted death for more than 50 years. “It’s funny, as a young man I belonged to two or three organizations (advocating for legalizing medically assisted death) and I really thought the legislation would have been passed twenty years ago,” he said. “By my time I really thought it (new legislation) would be in motion.” Martin said, if legalized, he would “absolutely” consider using medically assisted death sometime in the future. A recent poll conducted by Dying With Dignity suggests 84 per cent of Canadians support the idea of medically assisted death for terminally ill patients suffering from unbearable

pain. The Ipsos-Reid survey was based on a sample size of 2,500 Canadians and boasts it is “the most comprehensive survey ever undertaken on the public’s perception of dying with dignity.” However, while the survey insists public opinion has shifted in support of changing Canadian legislation, the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition warns that “human nature has not changed” since 1993, when the Supreme Court rejected the idea of changing legislation. The coalition’s chair Will Johnston said in a news release “our poor record of predicting the dying process has not changed and vulnerable people are still at risk in our health care system … we have seen the abuses of euthanasia in those few jurisdictions where this practice has become entrenched.” In June, Quebec made a groundbreaking decision passing the Act Respecting End of Life Care which bypasses the Criminal Code incorporating medically assisted death into provincial health care legislation. The new law is expected to come into force by the end of next year allowing people with a terminal illness to ask a physician to administer a lethal dose of medication. As for the rest of Canada, the Supreme Court’s decision is expected to take five to six months.

Thank You to my helpers and supporters. I am truly honoured for this opportunity to serve you and the Town of Qualicum Beach.

20-YEAR-OLD TRUSTEE-ELECT JACOB GAIR

Youth has a voice on new school board He vows to introduce a motion allowing a current student to have a role with the new board AUREN RUVINSKY writer@pqbnews.com

School District 69’s new 20-year-old trustee said there is a lot to take in, but he’s eager to help give students more of a voice at the district level. “I ran on the platform of representing youth and I want to carry that out,” he said after a week to digest his win. “I will continue to keep close to the students and I’ll make sure I keep going to schools as I did during the campaign.” After attending the orientation for new trustees he admitted “there is a lot to take in in a short period of time, it’s more complex than I thought,” quipping that “maybe the election was the easy part.” Trustees met some district staff and got a detailed run-

down of the hierarchy and district owned properties. As a full time, third year Vancouver Island University student working on a double major in history and political science, Gair is close to the daily life of students and said he will also keep talking to students, which he enjoyed during the campaign. “There was a fair bit of interest when I talked to them and they seemed interested in having a trustee talk to them.” Gair said previously that the lack of youth representation “among the controlling bodies of the educational system creates a significant divide between what is desired by the students and what is made available to them.” To that end, along with his own youth, he wants to introduce a current school district student as a representative on the school board. Born in Fort Nelson, Gair moved around a bit before settling in the area for Grade 1, getting his public education

in the district and graduating from Kwalikum Secondary in 2012. While he agrees with the

common refrain that there isn’t much for young people to do in the area, especially in the evenings, he said “I liked growing

up here, I really enjoy Qualicum Beach.” “It’s beautiful and it’s a fantastic place to live.”

Kettle campaign kicks off AUREN RUVINSKY

writer@pqbnews.com

The Salvation Army Christmas Kettle campaign kicked off this week, watch for them in front of grocery and liquor stores and at craft fairs. The kettles will be in front of Quality Foods in Parksville and Qualicum Beach, Save-On-Foods in Wembley Mall and Thrifty Foods in Parksville on busy days until Christmas. This year they are also adding a kettle at the Coombs Country Market. After December 1 they will also be in front of BC Liquor stores in both communities. The Salvation Army’s Major Norman Hamelin said they have added an extra day to the soup kitchen schedule and the new point system that allows people to essentially go shopping at the food bank is working well. They are in particular need of staples like peanut butter and jam, pasta and pasta sauce, any canned foods and, of course, cash.

Rotarian Susan Stark is organizing this year’s Christmas in Oceanside Home Tour with the Rotary Club of Qualicum Beach Sunrise. The event will take place Dec. 6 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

SATURDAY, DEC. 6

Take a holiday home tour The fundraising event is organized by Sunrise Rotary Club of Qualicum CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com

Eight venues will be lavishly decorated this holiday season as the Christmas in Oceanside Home Tour gears up for its fourth year. Six private homes, Hospice House and the penthouse suite at the Beach Club Resort will take part in the fundraising event. Each venue will be decked out to the nines for residents to admire this Christmas season. Rotarian Susan Stark is organizing the event and her oceanfront home is part of the tour. “As an interior designer it’s right up my alley,” she told The NEWS. “I like the idea of the fundraiser, it creates a lot of interest in town.”

Stark admits it takes a “rare personality” to allow hundreds of people into your home, but said it’s for a great cause. She said the self-guided tours are a great opportunity for people to get decorating ideas while supporting local charities this holiday season. Stark said she’s still deciding on the fine details of how to present her French Creek home for the tour. “I’m into less is more,” she hinted, but the final product will be a surprise. This year, Stark said some local restaurants will be offering a discounted luncheon to ticket holders including: Fish Tales Cafe, the Final Approach, Giovanni’s Ristorante, C-View Restaurant and Pacific Prime. “We have some great restaurants taking part and a lot of people will make a whole day out of it,” said Stark. In past years this event has seen around 200 people take part. This year,

MUNICIPAL ELECTION

Does anyone care in Coombs/Errington? Number of candidates on the ballot may be one reason people stayed away CANDACE WU news@pqbnews.com CANDACE WU PHOTO

RDN director Julian Fell, left, and B.C. Conservative party leader Dan Brooks at Tigh-Na-Mara Resort in Parksville on Saturday for the party’s annual general meeting.

Brooks looking for candidates CONTINUED FROM PAGE A3

The B.C. Conservatives say they have roughly 5,000 members. Brooks commended 2013 Parksville-Qualicum Conservative candidate David Coupland, who did not attend the event, for rallying the “single largest number of actual votes” in the last election. Coupland lost to current B.C. Liberal MLA Michelle Stilwell. Brooks pointed to this as another example of the party’s growing strength and support on the Island. Brooks criticized the NDP for the party’s “lackluster” response to the government during this year’s education dispute. “They (the NDP) don’t know what to say because they don’t know who they represent,” he claimed. “They’re a spent force in B.C.” Brooks claimed the Conservatives were now

“the common sense alternative” to the Liberal government, who he said “have overstayed their welcome in B.C.” He told The NEWS “Islanders have not been served well by the Liberals because they dictate instead of lead.” Alternatively, he said the conservatives are “grassroots instead of top-down.” Asked why he believes the Conservatives haven’t secured a seat in the Legislature, Brooks said “people are voting to keep the NDP out and they thought their only option was the Liberals.” In the next two-and-a-half years leading up to the 2017 provincial election, Brooks said he will be busy looking for candidates, increasing membership and traveling around the province finding out what British Columbians want to see in government.

Errington/Coombs had the lowest voter turnout in the mid-Island area where a meager 12.7 per cent of the electorate took advantage of their democratic right to vote. Out of 5,343 eligible voters, only 675 made it to the polls earlier this month for municipal elections. Meanwhile, Qualicum Beach had one of the highest voter turnouts in the province with 60 per cent of their 7,562 eligible voters taking to the polls (4,552). Parksville’s voter turn out was 35.2 per cent, Nanoose Bay came in at 28.4 per cent and Deep Bay/Bowser managed 26.5 per cent. This means Errington/Coombs had less than half the voter turn out of neighbouring communities — and one-fifth the results of Qualicum Beach. St. John was the municipality with the lowest voter turn out in the province at 15.2 per cent, with official results for regional districts (like Errington/Coombs) not available by press time Monday. Pugh could not confirm if Errington/Coombs had the lowest voter turnout for a regional district in the province. Regional District of Nanaimo legislative co-ordinator Matt O’Halloran said “what is on the ballot” makes the biggest difference in an election — citing candidates and referendums as factors predicting voter turn out numbers. “The number of candidates (running in an election) can have an impact on voter turn out,” explained O’Halloran, RDN deputy chief election officer for the 2014 municipal election. O’Halloran said in 2011 Coombs/Errington had four candidates running for office and saw an 18 per cent voter turn out, however, in the recent election just two candidates put their name forward and the turn out number dropped five per cent.

Pursuant to Sections 890, 891, and 892 of the Local Government Act, we advise you that a public hearing has been scheduled in your area with respect to the proposed “Regional District of Nanaimo Land Use and Subdivision Amendment Bylaw No. 500.394, 2014” and will be held: Date: Location: Time:

Tuesday, December 2, 2014 Oceanside Place, 830 West Island Highway, Parksville, BC 6:00 pm

What is the Zoning Amendment about? To rezone the property located at 1032 Roberton Boulevard (previously addressed as 1032 Lowry’s Road) as outlined in bold on the map below from Rural 1 (RU1) Subdivision District ‘F’ to a new Residential 1.2 (RS1.2) Zone, and a new Subdivision District ‘T’, under the “Regional District of Nanaimo Land use and Subdivision Bylaw No. 500, 1987”. How will this affect me? If adopted, this Amendment Bylaw will permit a higher density of single detached residential development and facilitate a future subdivision into approximately 54 lots. The proposed subdivision district would permit a minimum parcel size of 600 m2 with community water and sewer. Where can I get more information? A copy of the proposed bylaw and relevant documents may be inspected at the meeting, or prior to the meeting at the Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) office at 6300 Hammond Bay Road, Nanaimo until Tuesday, December 2, 2014. Office hours are Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, with extended hours on Wednesdays 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, excluding statutory holidays. The public hearing for this bylaw will be chaired by Director Stanhope or his alternate as a delegate of the Board. All persons who consider their interest in their property to be affected by the proposed bylaw shall be afforded an opportunity to be heard in person or by written submission at the public hearing. Written submissions can also be provided in advance of the public hearing and must be received at the RDN office by 4:30 pm Monday, December 1, 2014 to ensure their inclusion in the public record. Good man gone

I

n an age of bad actors, there are still sports figures who have a positive effect on lives outside their chosen game. The country lost one of those people on the weekend. Pat Quinn died in Vancouver on Sunday night. He was 71. Quinn came from humble beginnings. He grew up in the rough and tumble east end of Hamilton, where he had a paper route for some time, delivering The Globe and Mail. Eventually, the rink near his boyhood home was renamed Pat Quinn Arena. A tough customer in a time when everyone had to be a tough customer in the NHL, Quinn’s most famous playing moment may have been a thunderous check in the 1969 playoffs that provoked a bench-clearing brawl between Quinn’s Toronto Maple Leafs and the Boston Bruins. The target of Quinn’s hit, the player he knocked unconscious? Bobby Orr. After success as a coach in Philadelphia, Quinn made his way to Los Angeles and then Vancouver, in 1986. He has worked elsewhere since that time, but always kept his Vancouver home. After bringing in players like Trevor Linden, Pavel Bure and Kirk McLean, the Quinn-led Canucks gave the province a thrill by getting to within one win of the Stanley Cup in 1994. He also led the Canadian Olympic team to its first gold medal in 50 years in Salt Lake City in 2002. As we see sometimes in sports, the biggest, toughest of them all can be the most gentle, giving people off the playing field or ice. As the tributes poured in the last couple of days, we hear more about his selfless work for Canuck Place, a children’s hospice. Pat Quinn leaves many legacies across the country. He insisted the people he brought on board to work with him — players and coaches — be good citizens in the community. He also never stood in the way of someone who could advance their careers elsewhere. Current Canucks president Linden is one of those legacies and may be the only Canucks figure more loved and respected in this province than Quinn. As a sports executive ages, pundits like to look at his tree, the branches that have sprouted careers for others throughout the league. Pat Quinn’s tree has many branches, but in the end it won’t be the hockey results that trace back to the roots of his tree. It will be the community-minded, selfless attitude he instilled in others that will enrich the lives of many for years to come. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters GREAT HEALTH CARE This bouquet is to the Urgent Care team at the Oceanside Health Centre. I was playing golf at Morningstar Golf Course when my heart revved up, felt a little dizzy, had difficulty pushing my golf cart and I knew something was wrong. My wife Karen drove me directly to the health centre. Mentioning it was a heart issue, I was immediately surrounded by a great team of professionals. With my heart racing at double time, the doctors diagnosed me with having atrial flutter. The electrical charge that goes around your heart was in simple terms having a mind of it’s own and detouring, they took care of that with an electrical shock and my heart rate pulse went back to normal. As they weren’t satisfied with my blood pressure levels, they transferred me by ambulance to Nanaimo for further testing and observation and I’m happy to say that everything is OK. The point I would like to make is that we are extremely lucky to have the Urgent Care Centre and its great staff here in Parksville. For all you complainers about your wait times, I was reminded by the staff that since closing of the walk-in clinic, some still seem to think this is the replacement. Wrong, this is for urgent care and if you are not urgent you may have some waiting time. So for those of you that had a longer wait time last Wednesday, my apologies. Special thank yous to Murray (nurse) and doctors Flesher and Halvorson. BUTCH DEADMARSH Parksville

FRANKENFOOD BETTER THAN CHEMICALS

Are frankenfoods getting a fair deal? Genetic studies made great advances in the past 50 years and in the near future probably will result in the production of live artificial cells. A start has already been made in eliminating inheritable diseases in embryos. The possibilities are enormous. Starvation still occurs in parts of the world. It would be more common if food producers had not become more efficient. Increased production is largely due to the use of organic

and inorganic herbicides in agriculture. Complex chemicals are also used in industry, food preparation and medicines. In most cases, toxicity is measured in the lab by its effect on animals. These tests cannot evaluate slight, but important, long term effects, as demonstrated by the DDT fiasco, and the recent losses of bee colonies. Many seniors, including myself, wonder whether cancers, allergies, diseases of the nervous system, etc., only seem to be more common today, or if they might be part of an accumulative effect of the thousands of artificial substances which have entered the environment and the food chain. Given a choice between frankenfoods and chemicals, I would choose the frankenfoods. JIM DRUMMOND Qualicum Beach

ELECTION CHANGES Now that the election is over and things around here have changed dramatically... or have they? In Deep Bay (Area H), what has changed is we now have a machine that sounds like a diesel, logging-siding loader in a residential neighbourhood that lifts the load of seaweed off the residential beach that the tank drives upon and assembles in baskets. The smell, the sound and the visual impact at our once beautiful, natural, loved beach is gone. Also we have learned of the proposed industrial medical marijuana grow-op on a Gainsberg Road property. It would have been nice if Joe Stanhope of the RDN had included this Bowser property when he wrote the letter about the Nanoose Bay proposed medical marijuana operation to get it stopped. But there was no director on the board that would support such an idea. I wonder why? And the big change with the election over is that a Surrey developer is coming back to the RDN with his idea for high-density development in Deep Bay once again. Yes, the more things change the more they stay the same. LEN WALKER Deep Bay

VIDEO GAMES DON’T CAUSE VIOLENCE

Trevor Wicks’ recent letter to the editor promoting the false supposition that violent video games lead to violent behaviour like what happened in Ottawa, Quebec, or even terrorism in the Middle East, is simplistic at best and panders to people who do not bother to read about the phenomenon beyond the newspaper headlines. A quick search on Google brings up a Guardian newspaper article refuting Wicks’ claims quite easily. Children do not become “conditioned to sociopathic behavior.” Sociopathic, or psychopathic behaviour, is very complex and individuals can be tested for this behaviour. Dr. Robert Hare at UBC devised the test in the early 1990s and you can even take the test on Wikipedia. Sociopathic behaviour is not something you learn from watching a television screen — it is much much more complex than that, with some psychiatrists and psychologists thinking a person might be born like that. Equating the violence in the Middle East done by al Qaeda and ISIS is also spurious. I am quite sure that since about 1900, the violence done by various groups against others including killing women and children and causing the survivors to swear vengeance would be a more likely cause of the continuing violence. Born and raised in refugee camps with little or no education and watching the real violence around you would likely cause children to become violent. Electricity for video games and the cost of the video game are likely not available when your sole interest is to eat and survive. Wicks’ letter is sensationalist at the very least. In the U.S., violence and terrorism only causes more Americans to buy even more guns which leads to even more violence. Watching and participating in a violent video game would concern me much less than if my neighbour here in Canada had a unregistered long gun which he/she is now allowed to do. Ocean-view condos now for sale in Qualicum The seven condos available are priced from $449K to $949K JOHN HARDING editor@pqbnews.com

Anyone trying to sell absolutely anything wants to position a product as unique, something you just can’t get anywhere else. Qualicum College Heights has achieved just that with some stunning ocean-view condos, now for sale on a property steeped with history. Realtors John Cooper and Sean McLintock hosted an open house last week at the site on College Road in Qualicum Beach, the location of the former College Inn and, before that, the Qualicum College Boys’ School. The first phase of four on the site, Cambridge Manor, is now open. It has 16 units, but nine have already sold. As far as open houses go, this seemed like a big event, despite the fact it was

held in the middle of a weekday. One had to park way down the street and the units were getting a steady stream of visitors. “I think all of Qualicum Beach is here,” Cooper said of the large turnout. “There’s a big shift in Qualicum Beach where there are a lot of people who have lived here in single-family homes who are now getting to the stage of life where they don’t want to maintain those homes. High-end ocean view condos are almost non-existent in the Qualicum Beach area and this is likely to be the only new inventory (of this type of housing) introduced here in the next couple of years.” When all four phases are complete (Cooper said the timelines for those opening are “sales driven”), there will be 40 condos on the site. One of the buildings, the original boys’ school facility built in 1935, will be a clubhouse of sorts for those who live at the development, with a lounge, barbecue area and even a golf simulator. That

building will also have a couple of resort-style hotel rooms and a couple of suites that residents can rent for visiting family and friends to stay on site. “The developer (Dean Pomeroy) has gone to significant expense to maintain the heritage building as part of the development,” said Cooper, who, along with McLintock own Cooper McLintock and Associates and work with Remax. “That will be the hub of the College Heights community.” The public will be able to access the beach near Judges Row on a pathway through the College Heights development. The units themselves certainly have a high-end feel to them. The seven condos still for sale in this phase range in price from $449,000 to $949,000 and in square footage from 1,436 to 1,906. For more information, visit www.qualicumcollegeheights. ca, or contact Cooper by e-mail (john@coopermclintock.com) or phone (1-866-956-6228).

Take advantage of tax-free account withdrawals This time of year is getting close to your last opportunity to put into execution any tax planning that you wish to benefit on your next tax return. A strategy that is not often discussed, is to take advantage of the rules around Tax Free Savings account withdrawals. Tax Free Savings Accounts (TFSAs) have increased from a maximum annual contribution amount of $5,000 to $5,500. Therefore, from 2009 until 2014, you could have contributed a maximum amount of $31,000. For a couple, this means sheltering up to a maximum of $62,000. Many consider this account as a second choice after maximizing RRSP contribution amounts, but the TFSA is a much greater tax and retirement planning device. For greatest benefit, the TFSA is not meant as a ‘savings’ account with multiple withdrawals a month, but as a form of a long term savings vehicle.

On Nov. 11, I was privileged to attend the Remembrance Day services at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre. It was heartwarming to witness the number attending, where the floor seats were full and the standing room crowd was four-deep against the three surrounding walls. I was very impressed by the young men and women making up the cenotaph guard, who took their places on stage before the service began and remained there, heads bowed in reverence, until the very last officiator and dignitary had left the stage when the service ended. Everyone did a wonderful job including the Master of Ceremonies Don Taylor, Legion President Jack MacLean, Parade Marshall Gil Hopkins, Sergeant-at-Arms Jill Steff and Poppy Chairman Bill Layman. Trumpeter Alisha Yarman did a most admirable job of presenting the Last Post and Reveille. As well, Piper Shannon Pennington moved us with the lament. It was also a pleasure to listen to the offerings of the Kwalikum Secondary School Brass Ensemble who set the tone before the service. We give thanks also to those representing our community who, on our behalf, laid wreaths at the cenotaph, and a thank you also for drawing our attention to prayer and underscoring our feelings of reverence and faith, to the Chaplain, Rev. Phil Spencer.

With the recent atrocities on our own soil, in Ottawa and Quebec, we are made all the more aware of the job our men and women in uniform have done and are doing, to represent and protect us from those who would deny us our values, beliefs and our way of life. Present in many of our minds, I’m sure, is the awareness that those who had defended us in the Second World War and the Korean War are now much fewer in number, and those in attendance today know all too well the importance of honouring them and remembering our indebtedness to them. It was indeed a pleasure and a privilege to attend this ceremony, and to be sure, we will not forget what you have done for us. CRAIG DRUMMOND Qualicum Beach

RE: SMART METERS In 2001, scientists with the Washington State Department of Health reviewed historical data and reported that the sudden appearance of childhood leukemia in modern societies is closely linked to the original electrification of homes. In their 2002 summary report on EMFs, scientists with the California Department of Health Services reviewed the research and wrote “all three of the DHS scientists are inclined to believe that EMFs can cause some degree of increased risk of childhood leukemia, adult brain cancer, Lou Gehrig’s Disease and miscarriage.” JERRY FLYNN Bowser

NEXT MONTH IN NANAIMO

Local youngsters perform with Royal Winnipeg Ballet Three Innovative Dance Arts students chosen for The Nutcracker JESSICA SKELTON reporter@pqbnews.com

When the celebrated Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) brings its version of the Christmas classic The Nutcracker to the West Coast next month three young Parksville ballet students and their teacher will be there … not to watch, but to take part. Innovative Dance Arts’ Jennifer Quibell has taken on the roll of tour’s Ballet Mistress for the children’s casts in Nanaimo, Victoria and Vancouver, while Madison Ranger, 9, Clara Keefer, 10, and Natasha Hargreaves, 11, were chosen to dance in the children’s cast during the production’s Nanaimo dates. “It’s exciting,” said Quibell, who is the director of intensive ballet programming at IDA. Ranger, Keefer and Hargreaves were three of 60 children aged 7-12 from Campbell River to Mill Bay that auditioned for their rolls. In all, 36 were cast and seven understudies were picked. “I was excited because at first I didn’t know if I was going to get in,” said Hargreaves. Quibell, who didn’t have any say in who was picked, said that “it was wonderful” for her girls to be chosen. The kids will take on the supporting rolls of mice, Mounties,

angels and polar bears in the production. According to Quibell, the children’s cast has only four rehearsals to join together and learn their parts before taking the stage. Their final rehearsal is this Saturday. “They work very hard,” she said with pride. “When we first got there … it was hard to learn the steps,” said Ranger, who has been dancing since she was three. “It was a fast process,” agreed Keefer. This is the students’ first opportunity to dance on-stage with professional dancers. “It’s a wonderful learning experience,” said Quibell, who also mentioned that opportunities like this one don’t happen all that often. Her enthusiasm is echoed by Deena DeVito-Carl, co-owner of IDA. “We are very excited for the girls to have an opportunity to work with a professional ballet company such as the Royal Winnipeg and be exposed to real professional dance at such a young age,” she said. “It’s fun,” Hargreaves said of the experience so far, though she did add that the thought of dancing with professionals “a little bit nerve-wracking.” No matter how nervous the girls get, however, they can dance with the comfort of knowing they’ll have plenty of support in the audience. “We will also be taking a number of our other dancers to see the live

production,” said DeVito-Carl. As for Quibell, this is not her first crack at the The Nutcracker. She has worked with Ballet BC in Vancouver to bring the iconic Christmas show to West Coast audiences for the past five years and has worked with the RWB on a production of this ballet in

the past. This year, however, will mark the first time that the prairie company will bring The Nutcracker to the Island. The RWB has also put its own unique spin on the classic, with this version containing Mounties, Parliament Hill, a hockey game and polar bears. “It has a real Canadian feel

to it,” said Quibell. “It’s a lovely production.” The Nutcracker will be at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo Dec. 9 and 10 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $65 for general admission, $61 for members and $25 for students. To purchase tickets, call the Port Theatre at 250-754-8550.

People taking notice of totem-pole pictures JESSICA SKELTON

reporter@pqbnews.com

JESSICA SKELTON PHOTO

Gerald A. Fuller’s photographs of totem poles have been getting a lot of attention.

Sometimes inspiration comes unexpectedly, and that is exactly what happened to Gerald A. Fuller last spring. The photographer from Little Mountain woke up one morning while visiting Victoria, turned to his fiance and told her he needed to photograph totem

poles. “I don’t know what compelled me, but I knew I had to do this,” he said. So he went out and snapped, focusing on sections of the poles instead of them in their entirety. Unbeknownst to Fuller, who had been a “closet photographer” for nearly 20 years and continues to make his living as a landscaper, those photographs would quickly start

Karen E. Stewart

to get attention. People began to notice in the following weeks when Fuller met a couple directors of Quw’utsun’ Cultural Centre in Duncan while he was there snapping a number of poles. Fuller said they were so drawn to the work that they asked if he could provide some art cards for their gift shop later that same day. See PHOTOS FEATURED, page A26

He didn’t even have a business card at that point, but he filled the order. From there, things “happened really fast.” In May, he printed a handful of images for a portfolio and went to the Quality Inn Resort Bayside asking how he could display a photo in their lobby. Instead, the Bayside offered to rent him the whole wall from June to August. “He does beautiful work,” said Helen Corcoran, catering manager at the Bayside and the one who co-ordinated with Fuller. Fuller accepted and had 30 days to present matted and framed photos for the show. However, he had one problem: the only photographs he had were those in his portfolio. “I had absolutely nothing,” he recalled. So, after “freaking out” he started taking more and more photographs and learned how to frame and matt them from tutorials on YouTube. The work payed off. People started buying his work and he hosted another show at the Bayside in October. “Everyone loves it,” said Corcoran. “He gets enquires at the front desk all the time.” “People are excited,” agreed Fuller. In particular, he noticed that people are interested in talking with him about the totem poles themselves. He said customers have come to him saying he’s opened up their eyes to totem poles. Thanks to the tight and narrow angles he shoots, they’re now looking closer at the poles and seeing the individual pieces instead of glancing at the whole thing. Jane Davidson, who has had Fuller’s work for sale in her Parksville-based Gallery of Artists, also feels the photographer is doing more than

creating nice images. “I feel he’s doing what Emily Carr did,” she said. “He’s documenting the poles.” Fuller’s work, however, has also gotten some negative attention around copyright. That is, some people (who Fuller did not identify) were concerned that Fuller did not have the right to profit from images of other artists’ work. So, not wanting to step on toes, Fuller sought legal advice. “I had to do my due diligence … I did not ignore it,” he said. In the end, however, Fuller’s lawyer found out the photographer is not breaking copyright because he’s only photographing poles in the public domain. Still, Fuller wants “to make it clear that I’m not out to disrespect. If it was true (that he was breaking copyright), out of respect to the carvers I would not do this at all.” So, it was out of this respect that he now credits the carvers on his Facebook page. In the description of each picture Fuller posts on the social media site, he includes the biography and website of that pole’s artist. He’s also started to add the mythology behind the carvings in the images. Followers are responding well to this attempt to go “beyond the photograph” as it’s an extension of the information he gives when speaking to people in person. “I don’t know where this is going, but I know it’s exciting. I know something is coming.” If you’d like to view Fuller’s photography, visit his websites gafullerphotography.com and facebook.com/GAFullerPhotographyFuller. He’ll also have another show at the Bayside from Jan. 1 - Feb. 28, 2015.

DR. DON NEALE January 29, 1943 – November 13, 2014

Don passed away peacefully surrounded by his family after a five year battle with cancer. Don was predeceased by his dad, Terry and his mother, Betty. He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Jan; daughter, Deb (John) Taylor; grandchildren, Mitchell and Amy; son, Aaron (Liz); brother, Doug (Ann); sister Lorna (Paul) Tinney; also many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Don was born in Purdue, Saskatchewan and raised in Port Alberni. After graduating from UVIC with a B.Sc., he worked in forestry and commercial fishing. Don then attended Veterinary School in Saskatoon. After his graduation, the family moved to Ladysmith where he opened his own clinic in 1976 - The Ladysmith Animal Hospital. He retired in 2001 and fished commercially for 2 years. Realizing his true passion for veterinary medicine, Don and Jan moved to Parksville where he opened a second clinic – Oceanside Animal Hospital. Don was well respected in the community for his empathy toward animals and their owners. After twelve very successful years, he retired in March 2014 due to his illness. Don was a loving family man and special friend to so many. His wry sense of humour and zest for life brought joy to all who knew him. Don enjoyed every day and lived life to the max! Thanks to Dr Atwell, Dr Dunn, Dr Maccari and the wonderful Palliative Care staff at Eagle Park. Special thanks to Alana, our home care nurse. A Celebration of Life will be held in Don’s honour at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 29th at Yates Funeral Chapel, 1000 Allsbrook Road in Parksville. BALLENAS FOOTBALL

Whalers reach provincial semi-finals

Coltin Laplante rushes 276 yard six TDs — next up is Mission team that has history with BSS T YSON TAYLOR

We were able to execute all game long and that’s what helped us to victory.

sports@pqbnews.com

The Parksville Ballenas Whalers senior football team continued its impressive run this past week, beating the Hugh Boyd Trojans 42-12. With the win, the Whalers now find themselves in the semi-finals of the AA provincial high school football playoffs. Both the senior and junior Whalers have reached the semi-finals and will be looking to continue their successes once again this week. The senior Whalers got off to a hot start in the opening half last week, finding themselves up big over the Trojans, 28-0. It was pure havoc as the Whalers ran roughshod over the Trojans on both sides of the ball. The running attack from the Whalers couldn’t be stopped and the Whalers defense caused fits all day for the Trojans, creating turnovers in the first half and coming up big when called upon all game long. “Our first half of that game was one of the best executed game plans I’ve seen us do,” head coach Jeremy Conn said. “We thought we could run on them, we did. We thought we could mess up their offense and create turnovers, we did. We recovered two onside kicks as well. I was so proud of our kids.” The second half was much of the same for the Whalers, who would go on to score 14 more points to put the game to bed. “The Trojans never gave up the entire game,” Conn said. “They got on the board with two touchdowns in the second half but they weren’t able to stop our offense. We were able to execute all

game long and that’s what helped us to victory.” Coltin Laplante had a big game once again, rushing the ball 34 times for 276 yards and scoring all six Whaler touch-

downs. Quarterback Garrin McDonnell, who does double duty as the team’s kicker, was a perfect seven-for-seven on extra points. McDonnell also helped with two onside kicks, which were recovered

by Sam Paquette and Jonah ‘Haymaker’ Hay. Hay led the way for the Whaler defense, racking up seven tackles and a sack on the day. Noah Wheatley had a good game himself, coming up with four tackles, a sack and a fumble recovery. Nick Cessford also came up big for the Whalers, ringing up five tackles; a sack and a fumble recover as well. “Our linemen played another great game on both sides of the ball,” Conn said. “They dominated the way for Coltin on offense and on defense they were a wrecking crew, messing up the Trojans schemes and shotgun snaps. I was really proud to see all their hard work pay off.” The win sets up a rematch for the seniors against a tough Mission squad, who has sent the Whalers packing the last three years in the playoffs. Coach Conn said “it’s a monkey on our back that we’re going to get rid of.” This season has been a historic one of sorts for the Whalers football program as this is the first time in its history that both the senior and junior teams have advanced to the semi-finals in the same season. Wednesday the juniors are in action against Abbotsford (3:15 p.m. in Burnaby) with the seniors playing Mission on Saturday, 2 p.m. at UBC.

Last-place Gens beat first-place Storm With his family in attendance, Traverse City, Michigan’s P.J. Heger scores overtime winner Saturday T YSON TAYLOR sports@pqbnews.com

It was a Jekyll and Hyde weekend for the Save-On-Foods Oceanside Generals as they split their weekend series in games against the Peninsula Panthers and the Campbell River Storm. Friday night saw the Generals come out flat against the Peninsula Panthers, who were sitting in last place before the game began. That all changed as the Generals would go on to drop the game 5-1, vaulting the Pan-

thers ahead of the Generals in the standings. After a terrible outing Friday, the Gens were home to the first place Campbell River Storm on Saturday night. Getting off to a slow start, the Gens took three penalties in the first three minutes of the game, finding themselves down 1-0 after the first period. With the team looking for a spark to carry them through the rest of the game, they found it in goaltender David Anderson, who was back in

net for the first time in six weeks after a lower-body injury. “It felt good to get back in the net,” Anderson said. “There was a little rust there but luckily I faced a good chunk of shots early so I got in the game quickly. We got off to a slow start but we stuck close with them and kept on working hard.” That hard work would lead to a second period goal, which tied it at 1-1, as Jonah Pearson was parked at the side of the net to bang home a rebound out of

mid-air on a Generals power play. Both teams would trade goals in the third, as Mathieu Jallabert (power play goal) and Logan Savard gave the Generals a 3-2 lead. Campbell River would tie it up on the power play late in the third, setting the stage for a dramatic overtime finish. With his family visiting from Traverse City, Michigan, PJ Heger blasted a shot that found its way past three Storm defenders and goaltender Kyle Cheema for the game winner.

“As soon as I shot it I was hoping it would find a way through,” Heger said after scoring the game winner. “We played hard after a terrible game on Friday and we showed that we have what it takes to compete with the top team in this league. It was a great team game all around, everyone stepped up when we could have folded it up in the third after giving up the lead, but we stuck together and it paid off in the end.” See GENS, page A34

RACE FIVE RESULTS:

Bristle bashers lead T YSON TAYLOR

The league leading Bristle Bashers bested the Branch 76 Shooters with Tedd Ducker, who won all five of his matches, leading the charge. Also helping the cause were Mike Driscoll and Dustin Fee, both winning four of their five games. The Short Sighted Crew beat the Rocking Horse Oche-holics at home with John Eyre winning all of his games and Steven Eckhart winning four out of five games. The Crew’s Don Punter was tops for this week’s men’s high score with 174. Branch 49 Dart Riders narrowly lost to the QF Straight Arrows with a 17-16 final. Paulette Huntley of the QF Straight Arrows threw a perfect score of 180 in the win. Despite Legion Arrows captain

Angie Kienas coming in with the lady’s high score of 160, the Cutting Edge Dragons were victorious over the Legion Arrows. With Steve Collins and Ken Hayes each winning all five of their matches and Sean Wallington winning four out of five, the Dragons were a force to be reckoned with. It was a frosty but fun day for the racing fleet of the Schooner Cove Yacht Club last Sunday for the fifth race of seven in the Fall Colors Series. The wind was light so a relatively short course of seven miles was chosen. The boats were tightly bunched at the start line during the prestart sequence. At the sound of the starting horn Shingebiss crossed the line immediately followed by Amazing Grace and Freewind.

The crews of Freewind and Flight worked hard and overtook Amazing Grace on the downwind leg with the rest of the fleet close behind. Race six is scheduled for November 30.
