Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

You know Dasher and Dancer and Prancer and Vixen, Comet and Cupid and Donder and Blitzen, But do you recall The most famous reindeer of all? Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer Had a very shiny nose, And if you ever saw it, You could even say it glows. All of the other reindeer Used to laugh and call him names; They never let poor Rudolph Join in any reindeer games. Then one foggy Christmas Eve, Santa came to say: “Rudolph with your nose so bright, Won’t you guide my sleigh tonight?”

What child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping? (Chorus) This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing: Hast, haste to bring him laud, The babe, the son of Mary.

Then how the reindeer loved him As they shouted out with glee, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, “You’ll go down in history.”

Go Tell It On The Mountain When I was a seeker I sought both night and day, I asked the Lord to help me, And he showed me the way. Chorus

Why lies he in such mean estate? Go tell it on the mountain Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christian, fear: for sinners here Over the hills and everywhere, The silent Word is pleading. Go tell it on the mountain, Chorus So bring him incense, gold, and myrrh, Come, peasant, king, to own him. The King of king’s salvation brings, Let loving hearts enthrone him. Chorus

Our Jesus Christ is born.

He made me a watchman Upon a city wall, And if I am a Christian, I am the least of all. Chorus

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

J. Fred Coots and Henry Gillespie You better watch out You better not cry Better not pout I’m telling you why Santa Claus is coming to town

He’s making a list And checking it twice; Gonna find out who’s naughty and nice Santa Claus is coming to town He sees you when you’re sleeping He knows when you’re awake He knows if you’ve been bad or good So be good for goodness sake! O! You better watch out! You better not cry Better not pout I’m telling you why Santa Claus is coming to town Santa Claus is coming to town

A Holly Jolly Christmas Have a holly, jolly Christmas; It's the best time of the year I don't know if there'll be snow, but have a cup of cheer. Have a holly, jolly Christmas; And when you walk down the street Say Hello to friends you know and everyone you meet. Oh, ho, the mistletoe hung where you can see; Somebody waits for you; Kiss her once for me. Have a holly jolly Christmas, and in case you didn't hear, Oh by golly, have a holly, jolly Christmas this year.

Winter Wonderland

Sleigh bells ring, are you listening, In the lane snow is glistening, A beautiful sight, We’re happy tonight, Walking in a winter wonderland. Gone away is the bluebird, Here to stay is a new bird, He sings a love song, As we go along, Walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman, Then pretend that he is Parson Brown, He’ll say, “Are you married?” We’ll say, “No man, But you can do the job When you’re in town.” Later on we’ll conspire, As we dream by the fire, To face unafraid, The plans that we’ve made, Walking in a winter wonderland. In the meadow we can build a snowman, And pretend that he’s a circus clown, We’ll have lots of fun with mister snowman, Until the kids will come and knock him down. When it snows ain’t it thrilling, Though your nose gets a chilling, We’ll frolic and play, The Eskimo way, Walking in a winter wonderland.

Jingle Bells James Pierpont - 1857

Dashing through the snow On a one-horse open sleigh Over the fields we go Laughing all the way; Bells on bob-tail ring Jingle bell making spirits bright Jingle bell What fun it is to ride and sing Jingle bell rock A sleighing song tonight Jingle bells chime in jingle bell time Jingle bells Dancing and prancing in Jingle Bell Jingle bells Square Jingle all the way! In the frosty air O what fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh What a bright time It’s the right time To rock the night away Jingle bell time is a swell time To go gliding in a one-horse sleigh Giddy-up jingle horse Pick up your feet Jingle around the clock Mix and a-mingle in the jingling feet That’s the jingle bell That’s the jingle bell That’s the jingle bell rock

A day or two ago I thought I’d take a ride And soon Miss Fanny Bright Was seated by my side; The horse was lean and lank; Misfortune seemed his lot; He got into a drifted bank And we we got upsot Jingle Bells Jingle Bells Jingle all the way! O What fun it is to ride

In a one-horse open sleigh A day or two ago the story I must tell I went out on the snow And on my back I fell; A gent was riding by In a one-horse open sleigh He laughed as there I sprawling lie But quickly drove away Jingle Bells Jingle Bells Jingle all the way! O What fun it is to ride In a one-horse open sleigh Now the ground is white Go it while you’re young Take the girls tonight And sing this sleighing song; Just get a bob-tailed bay Two-forty as his speed Hitch him to an open sleigh And crack! you’ll take the lead Jingle Bells Jingle Bells Jingle all the way! Christmas Songbook 2014

God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen God rest ye merry, gentlemen, Let nothing you dismay, Remember Christ our Savior Was born on Christmas day, To save us all from Satan’s pow’r When we were gone astray; O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

“Let nothing you affright, This day is born a Savior, Of virtue, power, and might; So frequently to vanquish all The friends of Satan quite”; O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

From God our heavenly Father A blessed angel came. And unto certain shepherds Brought tidings of the same, How that in Bethlehem was born The Son of God by name:

The shepherds at those tidings Rejoiced much in mind, And left their flocks a-feeding, In tempest, storm, and wind, And went to Bethlehem straightway This blessed babe to find:

O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

“Fear not,” then said the angel,

But when to Bethlehem they

came, Whereat this infant lay They found him in a manger, Where oxen feed on hay; His mother Mary kneeling, Unto the Lord did pray: O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy. Now to the Lord sing praises, All you within this place, And with true love and brotherhood Each other now embrace; This holy tide of Christmas All others doth efface: O tidings of comfort and joy, Comfort and joy, O tidings of comfort and joy.

The Christmas h e w re the heart is. s i e m o Song H Lyrics by Mel Torme Chestnuts roasting on an open fire Jack Frost nipping at your nose Yuletide carols being sung by a choir And folks dressed up like Eskimos

Everybody knows a turkey and some Mistletoe help to make the season bright Tiny tots with their eyes all-aglow Will find it hard to sleep tonight They know that Santa’s on his way He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies On his sleigh And every mother’s Child is gonna spy to see if Reindeer really know how to fly And so, I’m offering this Simple phrase to kids from One to ninety-two Although it’s been said many times Many ways, “Merry Christmas to you.”

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas, Lean your ear this way! Don’t you tell a single soul? What I’m going to say; Christmas Eve is coming soon, Now, you dear old man, Whisper what you’ll bring to me; Tell me if you can. When the clock is striking twelve, When I’m fast asleep, Down the chimney broad and black, With your pack you’ll creep; All the stocking you will find Hanging in a row; Mine will be the shortest one, You’ll be sure to know. Johnny wants a pair of skates; Suzy wants a doll Nellie wants a storybook; She thinks dolls are folly; As for me, my little brain Isn’t very bright; Choose for me, old Santa Claus, What you think is right.

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks Dressed in holiday style In the air There’s a feeling of Christmas Children laughing People passing Meeting smile after smile And on ev’ry street corner you’ll hear Silver bells, silver bells It’s Christmas time in the city Ring-a-ling, hear them sing Soon it will be Christmas day

Strings of street lights Even stop lights Blink a bright red and green As the shoppers rush home with their treasures Hear the snow crunch See the kids bunch This is Santa’s big scene And above all this bustle You’ll hear Silver bells, silver bells It’s Christmas time in the city Ring-a-ling, hear them sing Soon it will be Christmas day

And wishing you a season of splendor.

Oh Holy Night Words by Chappeau de Roquemaure Translated by J.S. Dwight

Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth! Long lay the world in sin and error pining Till he appear’d and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary world rejoices For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn! Fall on your knees Oh hear the angel voices Oh night divine Oh night when Christ was born Oh night divine Oh night divine Led by the light of Faith serenely

Here Comes Santa Claus Gene Autry, Oakley Haldeman (c) 1947

beaming With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming Here come the wise men from Orient land The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger In all our trials born to be our friend. Truly He taught us to love one another His law is love and His gospel is peace Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother And in His name all oppression shall cease Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we, Let all within us praise His holy name.

Christmas Songbook 2014

While Shepherds Watched Melody - "Bethlehem", Gottfried Wilhem Fink, 1842 Nahum Tate, 1700 While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. Fear not, said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled minds; Glad tidings of great joy I bring, To you and all mankind. To you in David's town this day, Is born of David's line, The Saviour, who is Christ, the Lord, And this shall be the sign: The heavenly Babe you there shall find To human view displayed. All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid. Thus spake the seraph - and forthwith Appeared a shining throng Of angels, praising God, and thus Addressed their joyful song: All glory be to God on high, And to the earth be peace; Good-will henceforth from Heaven to men Begin, and never cease!

Angels We Have Heard On High Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o’er the plains And the mountains in reply Echoing their joyous strains. Chorus: Gloria, In Excelsius Deo Shepherd why this jubilee, Why your joyous strains prolong What the gladsome tidings be, Which inspire your heavenly song? Chorus Come to Bethlehem and see, Christ the Lord the newborn king. See him in a manger laid, Whom the choirs of angels praise Chorus

Let It Snow Oh, the weather outside is frightful, But the fire is so delightful, And since we've no place to go, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. It doesn't show signs of stopping, And I brought some corn for popping; The lights are turned way down low, Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. When we finally say good night, How I'll hate going out in the storm; But if you really hold me tight, All the way home I'll be warm. The fire is slowly dying, And, my dear, we're still good-bye-ing, But as long as you love me so. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

SEASON’S

GREETINGS

Christmas Songbook 2014 18 It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Ev’rywhere you go; Take a look in the five-and-ten, glistening once again With candy canes and silver lanes aglow. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, Toys in ev’ry store, But the prettiest sight to see is the holly that will be On your own front door. A pair of Hopalong boots and a pistol that shoots Is the wish of Barney and Ben; Dolls that will talk and will go

for a walk Is the hope of Janice and Jen; And Mom and Dad can hardly wait for school to start again.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas Ev’rywhere you go; There’s a tree in the Grand Hotel, one in the park as well, The sturdy kind that doesn’t mind the snow. It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas; Soon the bells will start, And the thing that will make them ring is the carol that you sing Right within your heart.

Christmas In Killarney

The holly green, the ivy green The prettiest picture you’ve ever seen Is Christmas in Killarney With all of the folks at home It’s nice, you know, to kiss your beau While cuddling under the mistletoe And Santa Claus you know, of course Is one of the boys from home The door is always open The neighbors pay a call And Father John before he’s gone Will bless the house and all How grand it feels to click your heels And join in the fun of the jigs and reels I’m handing you no blarney The likes you’ve never known Is Christmas in Killarney With all of the folks at home

Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer Irish Rovers Grandma got run over by a reindeer Walking home from our house Christmas Eve. You can say there’s no such thing as Santa, But as for me and Grandpa, we believe.

She’d been drinkin’ too much eggnog, And we’d begged her not to go. But she’d left her medication, So she stumbled out the door into the snow. When they found her Christmas mornin’, At the scene of the attack. There were hoof prints on her forehead, And incriminatin’ claw marks on her back. Chorus Grandma got run over by a reindeer, Walkin’ home from our house Christmas Eve You can say there’s no such thing as Santa, But as for me and Grandpa, we believe. Now were all so proud of Grandpa, He’s been takin’ this so well. See him in there watchin’ football, Drinkin’ beer and playin’ cards with cousin Belle. It’s not Christmas without Grandma. All the family’s dressed in black. And we just can’t help but wonder Should we open up her gifts or send them back? Chorus Now the goose is on the table And the pudding made of fig. And a blue and silver candle, That would just have matched the hair in Grandma’s wig. I’ve warned all my friends and neighbours “Better watch out for yourselves.” They should never give a license, To a man who drives a sleigh and plays with elves. Chorus

The First Noel

The first Noel, the angel did say, Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; In fields where they lay keeping their sheep, On a cold winter's night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

They looked up and saw a star Shining in the the East, beyond them far; And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel. And by the light of that same star, Three wise men came from country far; To seek for a King was their intent, And to follow the star wherever it went. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel. This star drew nigh to the northwest, O’er Bethlehem it took its rest; And there it did both stop and stay, Right over the place where Jesus lay. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel. Then entered in those wise men three, Full reverently upon their knee; And offered there in his presence, Their gold, and myrrh, and frankincense. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.

Have yourself a merry little Christmas, Make the Yule-tide gay, From now on, our troubles will be miles away.

Here we are as in olden days, happy golden days of yore. Faithful friends who are dear to us gather near to us once more. Through the years we all will be together If the Fates allow Hang a shining star upon the highest bough. And have yourself a merry little Christmas now.

B.Hayes, J.Johnson (c) 1948

I’ll have a blue Christmas without you; I’ll be so blue thinking about you. Decorations of red on a green Christmas tree Won’t mean a thing if you’re not here with me I’ll have a blue Christmas, that’s certain; And when that blue heartache starts hurting, You’ll be doing all right with your Christmas of white, But I’ll have a blue, blue Christmas.

Frosty The Mary’s Boy Child Snowman

23

Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day. And man will live forever more, because of Christmas Day.

Frosty the snowman was a jolly happy soul With a corncob pipe and a button nose and two eyes made out of coal Frosty the snowman is a fairy tale they say He was made of snow but the children know how he came to life one day There must have been some magic in that old silk hat they found For when they placed it on his head he began to dance around O Frosty the snowman was alive as he could be And the children say he could laugh and play just the same as you and me Thumpetty thump thump thumpetty thump thump Look at Frosty go Thumpetty thump thump thumpetty thump thump Over the hills of snow Frosty the snowman knew the sun was hot that day So he said “Let’s run and we’ll have some fun now before I melt away” Down to the village with a broomstick in his hand Running here and there all around the square saying Catch me if you can He led them down the streets of town right to the traffic cop And he only paused a moment when he heard him holler “Stop!” For Frosty the Snowman, had to hurry on his way, But he waved goodbye, Sayin’ “Don’t you cry, I’ll be back again some day.”

Long time ago in Bethlehem, so the Holy Bible say, Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day. Hark; now hear the angels sing, a king was born today, And man will live forever more, because of Christmas Day. Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day. While shepherds watch their flocks by night, They saw a bright new shining star, They hear a choir of angels sing, the music came from afar. Hark; now hear the angels sing, a king was born today, And man will live forever more, because of Christmas Day. Now Joseph and his wife, Mary, came to Bethlehem that night, They found no place to bear her child, not a single room was in sight. And then they found a little nook in a stable all forlorn, And in a manger cold and dark, Mary’s little boy child was born. Hark; now hear the angels sing, a king was born today, And man will live forever more, because of Christmas Day. Mary’s boy child Jesus Christ was born on Christmas Day.

’Twas The Night Before Christmas A Visit From St. Nicholas Henry Livingston, 1808

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse; The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there; The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads; And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down for a long winter’s nap, When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below, When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tiny reindeer, With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name; “Now! Dasher, now! Dancer, now! Prancer, and Vixen! On! Comet, on! Cupid, on! Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!” As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too.

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my hand, and was turning around, Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot; A bundle of toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack. His eyes -- how they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow; The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath; He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook, when he laughed like a bowlful of jelly. He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself; A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread; He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk, And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose; He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”
