On the morning of November 15th, after going to the polls, eight “Friends of Lois Creek” got together for a trail brushing work party. “The goal of the trail brushing is to prepare for ski season,” says Roger Warnatsch, “to widen the trails enough to have a walking and skiing trail side by side.” Anyone interested in officially becoming a Friend of Lois Creek should contact Don Davies at donandjuned@gmail.com or 250-427-3966. Volunteer opportunities include maintaining the trails with a chainsaw, brushsaw, hand tools or pure muscle power; helping put out the seasonal signs; setting the tracks with skis on the ski side and snowshoes on the walking side; and occasionally setting tracks with the track setter. We appreciate the community’s help with maintaining our vast trail network. Chief Election Officer for last weekend’s municipal election, Kelly Harms, made the statement of official results this week. Don McCormick is officially declared Mayor and council is declared at Kent Goodwin, Albert Hoglund, Nigel Kitto, Bev Middlebrook, Darryl Oakley and Sandra Roberts. Official vote counts are as follows: Don McCormick, 1301 votes;
Ron McRae 1142 and Doug Johnson, 181. Council votes were: Brent Bush, 1340; Darren Close, 1407; Kent Goodwin, 1853; Albert Hoglund, 1601; Nigel Kitto, 1492; Bev Middlebrook, 1447; Darryl Oakley, 1817; Sandra Roberts. 1898. In the RDEK Area E, Jane Walter ran unopposed for Director and for school trustees, Betty Lou Barrett, Sandra Smail and Mac Campbell also ran unopposed.
The Christmas season in Kimberley officially starts when the Platzl lights up. This year that takes place this Saturday evening, November 22. Come down to the Platzl for 6 p.m., or even earlier and have dinner. At 6 the Kimberley Choir will be performing seasonal favourites. Mayor Ron McRae will be leading the Light Up countdown this year and at 6:30 p.m. sharp, the lights go on. And right after that, at 6:35 p.m. Santa arrives. Pictures with Santa are complementary from the Kimberley and District Chamber of Commerce. Many stores will be open in the downtown area for Christmas shopping. The Kootenay Dance Academy will be raising money with a hot chocolate and bake sale in front of their new location in the Platzl. As Christmas is the season of giving, donations to the Helping Hands Food Bank will be gratefully accepted during the evening. This is a great evening for families, especially with young children, so come down to the Platzl and join the fun.
City hires Dave Clarke as new Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities KIMBERLEY, BC - The City of Kimberley is happy to announce that Dave Clarke as the Manager of Parks, Recreation and Facilities. Dave was raised in Kimberley and has most recently spent a year as the Sales and Event Coordinator at the Kimberley Conference and Athlete Training Centre and as coordinator of the past two July Fests. Dave has a
degree in Kinesiology from the University of Lethbridge. Dave has previous experience working as a fitness centre manager, as a program coordinator for BC Hockey/ Hockey Canada, and as a Facility and events Coordinator for the City of Victoria’s Parks, Recreation and Facilities department. Dave states “I could not be happier than to
manage the Parks, Recreation, and Facilities for the City of Kimberley, and my wife and I are overjoyed to bring up our two children in this perfect place.” Chief Administrative Officer Scott Sommerville states “I am excited to add Dave to the team at City Hall. His experience being raised in Kimberley, a former Dynamiter, a hockey program coordi-
nator, and a successful event coordinator gives him the local context and experience to lead our Recreation Department.” This position replaces Tom Sprado, who left the position in August. Jason Wheeldon had a target on his back on Wednesday at a monthly Chamber of Commerce meeting. Singled out as the chief turkey by Chamber vice president David Struthers, Wheeldon and the rest of the business community are gearing up for the annual Turkey Drive. The fundraiser, which goes towards Christmas hampers created by the Salvation Army and the Food Bank, is setting a target of roughly $64,000 to meet the need in Cranbrook. Chamber members are setting a goal of raising 35 per cent of that, as each hamper costs roughly $85. The fundraiser works on a pledge system, with turkeys at $20 a pop. Darrell Jones, president of Overwaitea Food Group, and the keynote speaker at Wednesday’s meeting, threw down the gauntlet, pledging 100 turkeys and challenging the other grocery companies to match it. “We on behalf of the

Kimberley’s Howard Street has undergone a renaissance of sorts in recent months with new businesses opening, and more established businesses sprucing up. The very successful, inaugural Farmers’ Market held on Howard Street every Thursday this past summer underscored this new vibrancy. One of the businesses that has taken on a new look is the Burrito Grill. Owner Chantel Hack commissioned a mural for the front of the building and is quite pleased with the results. “Firstly, I would like to thank City of Kimberley, who wholeheartedly green lighted our project throughout the entire process,” Hack said. “The city was very easy to work with and encouraged us to make these improvements to the front of our business. “Traditionally the City has not been known to be easy to work with on signage and storefront appearance, among the business owners, and it seems there is a refreshing new attitude in City of Kimberley’s approach to business. “Our mural was airbrushed, spray painted, and painted over the course of one week this summer by local artist Clayton Stitt. Clayton moved to Kimberley one year ago from Vernon. “Clayton’s inspiration for the mural was in recreating a natural landscape scene in Mexico. Going from the setting sun in the desert to the night sky with planets and stars. The mural accurately reflects the cuisine we serve at the Burrito Grill, Mexican inspired. “We think it is a beautiful addition to the

The Marysville Ratepayers’ Association held a meeting last Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the Legion Hall, with 44 members present. G. Carpender, president, was in the chair and the minutes of the last meeting were read by the secretary, Eric Thompson. These were adopted as read. The Chairman then requested Finance Commissioner H.L. Neilsen to give a report on the financial status of the village. Mr. Neilsen stated that the village finances were in good standing. Commissioner of Water Works Glenn Wesche advised the meeting that all was in order in his department to date. The Chairman then advised the meeting (reporting on behalf of Commissioner of Public Work, K.O. McKenzie, who had not yet arrived) that the delay in completing the work on Turner Ave. was due to the lack of an operator for a machine which had been borrowed from Cominco. However, on the arrival of Mr. McKenzie it was explained that work would resume on Saturday. A motion was made by Ted Smith and seconded by J. Eckersley that a recommendation be made to the Commissioners that a plebiscite be held for a Sewage System for the village. The motion was passed by a majority of members present. A discussion took place after questions of members regarding cost of sewage interest over the period. This was all fully explained by Commissioner Neilsen. The proposed Municipal Office Building plans, which include a
space for the Post Office, were discussed. Commissioner McKenzie placed the plans before the meeting, advising all were welcome to inspect them. Explaining the delay in the estimate of the complete price was due to a possible change in trusses, which may have to be steel. Approximate price of the building, 30 feet by 53 feet, would be $13,761. It was also mentioned that the cost of a vault which is badly needed for the storage of important village documents which do not have adequate protection at the present time, would, perhaps, up the price somewhat. However, it was explained at this time, the Government had been approached and had expressed their willingness to lease a portion of the proposed building for a Post Office for a period of five years. At a rental of $150 per month, this would amount to $9000 for the period and would offset the cost of the building considerably, taking into consideration some additional expense for janitor service, etc. The members were then requested to ask questions and express opinions. Replying to a query as to where the Office documents were now kept, it was explained that a filing cabinet was all that was available, bonded to withstand a certain degree of heat only; and as this was full to overflowing, it was apparent that other arrangements would have to be made as quickly as possible. Asked why there had been such a long delay in the construction of the Municipal Building, Commissioner Neilsen explained that certain bylaws were inevitable and that the Government had delayed procedure for at least six months over these. The present delay is due to some
letters of protest from some of the Ratepayers who feel the Village Commissioners should not enter the rental field and should erect a building for municipal purposes only, and not to house a Post Office. The protesting element at the meeting had no objection to the size of the building, but felt that it should be a municipal building only. A motion was made by Vic Dick, seconded by Stan Higgins, that a letter be sent the Village Commissioners, asking them to go ahead with the proposed building, but delete the Post Office section and lease. The motion was defeated. Chairman Gale Carpender then closed the discussion on the building and reminded the members of the election of Commissioners to replace two whose terms have expired. The elections will be held in December. The proposed Civic Centre was discussed and Commissioner Franz stated that the plans are for a building 60 feet by 90 feet, which will have most indoor sports, including basketball. There is to be a meeting with Mr. Hurdle of Cominco shortly, when we should know just when funds will be forthcoming from the Recreational Fund. Commissioner Neilsen brought to the attention of the meeting the changeover on November 2 of telephone service, which will, in turn, change the fire alarm system for the village. A person reporting a fire need only go to the nearest phone and call LUlow 2-3232. The phone will ring in the homes of five volunteer firemen. The reporting party should stay on the line to inform all. The alarm system is still attached to the telephone pole near the Mercantile Store and can also be used.

Speedwatch contributes to road safety CHRIS NEWEL For the Bulletin
The Kimberley Speedwatch group has been active in the community, promoting road safety for over 8 years. They volunteer their time to educate and increases awareness in and around the City of Kimberley through speed monitoring. Members of the group set up at various times and locations from early spring to fall. They monitor and record the number of vehicles along with the speed. In addition to education and awareness police review the statistics and will follow up with enforcement action in the area if necessary. This year the volunteers put in more than 140 hours and set up on 34
separate occasions, recording the speed of more than 6700 vehicles. Less than 10 per cent of those vehicles were exceeding the speed limit by more than 10 kmh. Placement of the teams is a collaborative effort between the Speedwatch coordinators and police. Location deployments are based on observations made by the police, complaints received from residents and local government or in high risk areas (i.e. school zones). In addition to enforcement police often send warning letters to those may need a further reminder to slow down. Sgt. Kids around our community look for and thrive on things to do. This can range from sports and teams to hangout areas, gaming places and even foods. The senior class from the Kimberley Independent School has been analyzing youth involvement in Kimberley, focusing on improving the already exceptional standards of programs that are available to youth in Kimberley. Here are some of our ideas: Youth are very fortunate to have the skate park in our small town. It is popular, doesn’t
have any graffiti, and most of the obstacles are well taken care of. A few things we could improve upon are the addition of rails, jumps and stairs. Kimberley’s skate park youth could do fundraisers for small expansions, one at a time. An indoor facility would be a wise investment. An arcade would be of great interest to youth, especially if it had a good variety of games. A visible location such as the Platzl paired with solid advertisement for the arcade would help increase its popularity and success. Adding a small shop to buy newer and older games would also help make some profit. Sports are popular in our community, and having more variety would open it up for more youth to get involved. Things to improve are more involvement of youth teams in junior tournaments or big events such as JulyFest. Another idea is the addition of clubs for different interests such as arts, science and sports. We need these extra clubs because there is not enough variety in the community and youth need something to do that they are
passionate about. We think it’s awesome that Kimberley has its own youth centre. It gives Kimberley’s youth a place to go and have fun, and we feel this could be built upon. Adding clubs into the youth centre such as a chess club or gaming club would bring in way more youth. Restaurants in Kimberley could be more youth-friendly and offer more affordable, healthy options. This is because lots of parents won’t let their kids go to some restaurants, either because they are too expensive and geared toward adult clientele or the affordable options are the least healthy. Lastly, we discussed having a committee which advises the City of Kimberley on youth engagement, giving a direct youth perspective. The YES initiative inspired the Kimberley Independent School senior class to share our opinion and ideas for an ideal community. We feel these improvements could be made to benefit the youth in this community. - 30 -

No charges approved in Fernie police pursuit Fernie Free Press
Victoria – The Criminal Justice Branch (CJB), Ministry of Justice, announced today that no charges will be laid against two members of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who were involved in a police pursuit between Fernie and Sparwood on January 26, 2014. The occupants of another vehicle suffered injuries when it was struck by the vehicle that had been pursued by police. The matter was investigated by the
Independent Investigations Office (IIO) and a Report to Crown Counsel (RTCC) was submitted to CJB by Richard Rosenthal, Chief Civilian Director of the IIO. Following an investigation, where the Chief Civilian Director of the IIO determines that an officer may have committed an offence, the IIO submits an RTCC to CJB. The Chief Civilian Director does not make a recommendation on whether charges should be approved or what
charges CJB should consider. CJB has concluded after reviewing the entirety of the RTCC that there is no substantial likelihood of conviction for any driving offences under either the Criminal Code or provincial Motor Vehicle Act against the two members of the RCMP. The CJB has also concluded that the available evidence does not establish that the force used by the officers in the course of arresting the suspect
October 2014 Kianna Reid Kianna is 12 years old and attends McKim Middle School. Kianna is in her fourth year of lessons. She is currently taking classes in jazz, street jazz and acro. Kianna also assists with our Creative kids class. Her other interests include babysitting, ski/ snow boarding and hanging out with friends. For her efforts Kianna will receive gift certificates from Grubstake Pizza, Sole to Soul Esthetics Studio and The Old Bauernhaus Restaurant. Kianna will also have the chance to be named “Dancer of the Year” at Kimberley Dance Academy’s year end production in May. With this title, the winner will receive a scholarship from Artistic Director Leslie Lindberg to help further their dance education. Congratulations Kianna!

Interior 9-1-1 call-answer service successfully transferred to E-Comm Vancouver, B.C.— As of 10:33 a.m. Tuesday, 9-1-1 calls from the Central and Southern Interiors are being answered by E-Comm— British Columbia’s largest 9-1-1 public-safety answer point. The changeover to E-Comm will be transparent to residents, who should dial 9-1-1 as usual. Calls will be routed to the same local police, fire and ambulance dispatchers who currently dispatch first responders to emergency situations. After four months of collaborative technical and operational planning that included the engineering, design and
installation of new 9-1-1 infrastructure, the transfer of 9-1-1 services for the Central Okanagan, North Okanagan, Central Kootenay, Columbia-Shuswap, Okanagan-Similkameen, Thompson-Nicola, East Kootenay, Kootenay-Boundary and Squamish-Lillooet (North) regional districts occurred seamlessly. Representatives from the new service areas were onsite at E-Comm to witness the official cutover. “This is a significant event for all nine interior regional districts involved,” said Regional District of Central Okanagan Chair Robert

For consumers, April 1, 2015, will mark the first day that grocery stores are allowed to sell liquor through the store-within-a-store model. As well, that same day, restrictions will be lifted on BC Liquor Stores, allowing them to offer refrigeration and to stay open longer hours, including on Sundays. For retail stores, there has long been the perception that BC Liquor Stores had an unfair advantage in the market. No longer. Starting April 1, 2015, all liquor retailers, including BC Liquor Stores, will purchase their product from the BC Liquor Distribution Branch (BCLDB) at a common, wholesale price. This will do away with the existing complex model that offers retailers various discounts depending on the type of retailer they are. Simply, all liquor retailers will now be able to make business choices based on a more level playing field. The expectation is that, by increasing competition, the market can be more responsive to the needs of consumers. Of note, the shelf price that consumers pay when purchasing liquor at private stores has never been set by government, and this will continue to be the case. A minimum purchase price, protecting health and public safety, will also continue to be in place.

Police calls will then be transferred to the same dispatchers in Kelowna, fire calls will continue to be dispatched by centres in Cranbrook, the Fraser Valley, Kamloops, Kelowna, Surrey, Trail and Vernon while ambulance calls will continue to be managed by the BC
Ambulance Service’s dispatch centre in Kamloops. Part of the robust preparations surrounding this morning’s transition included more than 240 test calls across all regional districts. Geography familiarization was also a priority for E-Comm call-takers in the lead-up to today, with the many geographical and other special attributes of the new service area being a focus of their training program, along with the policies and procedures for individual agencies. “9-1-1 is a lifeline, which is why thorough preparation was our top priority for today’s transition,” explained David Guscott, E-Comm President and CEO. “We’re eager, and ready, to share our large team of experienced 9-1-1 staff, our technology and purpose-built facility with residents in the Central and Southern Interiors and we are proud to be their partners in public safety.”

Five popular sayings that aren’t true
F
rom time to time, I hear people make statements about the Christian faith as if they were true. They assume these statements are common wisdom. Let’s examine some of them a little more carefully. 1. “The Bible is the word of God.” It strikes me that neither the Bible nor the ancient creeds of the church talk about scripture as the “word of God.” What the Bible does say is that “all scripture is inspired by God” (2 Timothy 3:16), but that’s not the same as saying it’s God’s word. “Inspired” comes from a Latin root which means “breathed into”. To say that scripture is inspired is to acknowledge that God breathes life into scripture; dead words become living truth as we are inspired. The gospel of John says that the Word is actually not a book, but a person — namely, Jesus: “In the beginning was the Word, and the word was with God, and the word was God.” In other words, Christians believe that God is revealed to us primarily in a person, not in a static book. It’s an important distinction to make. 2. “God helps those who help themselves.” Every time I hear this, I cringe. The truth is that the Bible says exactly the opposite: we are to care for and look out for each other, and especially for those who cannot help themselves. Over and over again in the Old Testament, the people are urged to care for “the widow, the orphan, and the stranger within your gate.” (eg Deuteronomy 27:19) These three groups of people were the most vulnerable in ancient Israel and other ancient societies.
They cannot help themselves, which is why they need our care. This saying is usually attributed to Benjamin Franklin, quoted in Poor Richard’s Almanac in 1757. A little further research discovered that the modern wording comes from Algernon Sydney, an English politician from the 17th century. Further research shows that this sentiment was already quite common in ancient Greek tragedies. 3. “Canada (or America) Rev. Yme is (or was) a Christian naWoensdregt tion.” This may be a wonderful story to tell about our origins and ourselves, but it has never been true. Greg Boyd points out in his book The Myth of a Christian Nation that if the US (and by extension, Canada) followed the principles of the kingdom of God, it would probably collapse. We’ve been killing people and stealing land since day one. We have been governed by self–interested and self–serving people who have exhibited all the triumphs and flaws of what it means to be human. Canada as a Christian nation never existed. 4. “When you die, your soul goes to heaven to be with God.” Many Christians believe that having the soul leave the body and go to heaven is the goal of Christian faith. I’ve written before that faith is not about what happens after we die, but about how we live on this earth. But the other part of this idea — that the soul leaves the body — isn’t from Christian faith. It comes from Plato, the Greek philosopher who thought that the physical realm was bad and the spiritual
realm was good. The early church condemned this way of thinking — called dualism — as heresy. The Bible tends to talk about the human person as a unity: body, soul, mind and strength. What happens in death is a mystery, but the one thing I’m pretty confident about is that this unity is not split into its constituent physical and spiritual parts. 5. “Jesus talked most often about hell and heaven.” In the gospels, Jesus uses words often translated as “hell” exactly eleven times. The word “heaven” shows up 123 times in the four gospels, but most of them come from Matthew who used “kingdom of heaven” as a synonym for what the other gospel writers call “kingdom of God.” When we look at “heaven” more carefully, we discover that Jesus never talks about heaven as a place where we go. Not once! As I’ve written before, Jesus didn’t’ focus on the afterlife. He talked about the kingdom of God (or the kingdom of heaven), which referred to his movement of love and justice, and what life would be like if God were truly in charge. Jesus was most concerned with how we treat one another in this world, how we live together in peace, and with that kind of distributive justice which ensures that all people share equally in the wealth of the universe. Jesus’ focus was intensely this–worldly. As the Great Commandment puts it, “Love God with all you are and love your neighbour as yourself.” Imagine what our world would be like if we were to take Jesus seriously. little World War One history, if you please: The period between August 8, 1918, to November 11, 1918, in terms of the First World War is, from the Allied (us) viewpoint generally called the “Hundred Days Offensive.” From a Canadian viewpoint it is termed “Canada’s Hundred Days,” in reference to a series of attacks by the British First Army, of which the Canadian Corps played a substantial role. The Canadians, including the 7th Canadian (1st British Columbia) Battalion, fought a number of important battles in France including those of Amiens, Arras, Cambrai, and Mons, where they were fighting on the final day of the war. The Allied victories served to break the German Hindenburg Line of defense, (stretching approximately 150 km) and, thus forced the Germans to retreat from France completely, thereby bringing an end to the brutal, unwavering trench warfare to which both sides had been subjected for years. The Canadian Corps entry into the French city of Cambrai and beyond, in early October, 1918, compelled the German High Command to accept that they could do little but surrender, which they did of course, on November 11, 1918. Cranbrook boys were involved throughout the campaign in various regiments. In a letter to the Cranbrook Herald newspaper, written on October 14, 1918 (published Nov. 7) addressed to Mr. R.W. Edmundson of Cranbrook, James Lunn of the Mounted Rifles tells of being among the first to enter Cambrai. “It was some scrap and from where we are lying now we can hear them going at it … I sent you on a German belt which I got at Monchy: it will make a good razor strop: also a Fritzie [German] camouflaged helmet from Bourlon Wood. It is almost impossible to get a spiked helmet so I did the best I could. I hope they reach you; the helmet will make a good coal scuttle for Mrs. Edmundson … I met Tom Marshall and Bobby Brewer the other day, also Bert Murgatroyd. They are all well … Give all the boys my best wishes and I think I will soon be there to tell them the rest myself, as Fritzie is howling like hell now … Remember me to Lester Clapp … Tom Caven and Dave Spears, Balment and all the other boys.” Canada’s Hundred Days saw the Canadian boys in some fierce battles. This period accounts for nearly 20 per cent of

all Canadian casualties during the First World War. Lunn also refers to the Bourlon Wood, which was part of a singular campaign that included a clever and complex night crossing of the Canal du Nord in France, by the Canadian Engineering Corps, who constructed the bridges allowing the Canadian troops to cross during the night, taking the German defenders completely by surprise the following morning. The Germans were put into massive disarray and retreated so quickly that they left behind a great deal of weaponry, including ten field guns (cannons) captured by the 7th Battalion near Sains-les-Marquoin, possibly at the nearby hamlet of Haynecourt. One of these, a German 7.7cm. Feldkanone 16 n.A., serial number: 19241, which, on August 7, 1920, arrived in Cranbrook, British Columbia, as part of the Federal Government allotment of captured German weapons shared across the country. Known commonly as a “77mm whizz bang”, due to the sound of the shell in flight, it was formidable weapon on the battlefield. There is little doubt that this particular cannon and the others on the battlefield initially spelled destruction for the Canadian soldiers who finally si-
lenced it. To gain the enemies’ guns was, and is, considered a very noteworthy feat and to lose them is a source of great humiliation. There were a total of 398 large guns awarded across Canada, allotted according to the percentage of enlistments in each province and, then, according to the percentage of enlistments in each town or city. Ontario received 166; Quebec, 56; Manitoba, 45; British Columbia 35, and so on down the line to the Yukon, which received one. For a town the size of Cranbrook to receive such a trophy was a singular honour. This year marked the 100th anniversary of the start of World War One. The captured German cannon has been on display in Cranbrook for almost a century, much of that time situated in a public place of honour. It appears that the Canadian Legion has been acting as caretaker of the gun on behalf of the City of Cranbrook for many years now. The Legion has moved it to at least four different locations over the decades, the most recent being the rear parking lot of the Heritage Inn. When the gun was first received it came with a letter to the City of Cranbrook from Arthur G. Doughty, Dominion Archivist, which stated,
in part: “These trophies, which have been declared the property of the people of Canada, are sent to you with the understanding that proper care will be taken of them and in taking them over, it is understood that you agree to this condition.” The Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire Memorial Fountain that graced Rotary Park for many years, created from funds donated by many of this community, now ignobly resides in the City Works yard. The captured German field gun sits in a parking lot. As John McCrae so memorably put it: …To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.” The words resonate meaningfully each year in the weeks leading up to the anniversary of the Armistice of the First World War on November 11. Nov. 14. After a strong October, the month of November has been drastically different for the Dynamiters. Kimberley finished October with a record of 6-4-0-2, paced by an offence that outscored opponents by a combined margin of 56 to 38 (4.67 to 3.16 per game). For comparison’s sake, the Nitros are 2-50-0 so far in November, with three games remaining on the schedule. With November winding down, Kimberley has been outscored by a combined margin of 28 to 18 (4.00 to 2.57 per game). “We’ve just got to bare down on our chances more,” Richter said of the downturn in offence. “A lot of times we kind of think it’s too easy. After tonight and the practice this week, we realize we need to focus and bare down on our chances.” The win pushed the Dynamiters back into second place in the competitive Eddie Mountain Division. The Fernie Ghostriders (16-4-0-1) continue to hold strong atop the division, while a mere two points separate second-place Kimberley and fourth-place Creston Valley (11-8-13) with the Golden Rockets (12-10-0-3) wedged in the middle. “When it comes down to it, we’ve still just got to win games,” Richter said of the divisional logjam. “It’s still early on in the season. We’re still progressing but it all comes down to February. “It obviously matters where we get into play-

We obviously want to have home advantage, but when it comes down to it, February is when it matters.” Kimberley face two important divisional tests beginning tonight when they travel to Golden to face the Rockets, before moving on to challenge the first-place Fernie Ghostriders Saturday night. “We need everybody to make good plays,” Bancks said. “It’s got to be a total team effort. We can’t wear Richter, Marchi, Klingspohn, guys like that, out. You need everybody going [this weekend].” In three games against the Rockets this season, the Dynamiters hold a 2-1-0-0 record. Braves leading scorer Jonny Marzec took advantage of a giveaway deep in Kimberley territory late in the first period, cutting the Nitros lead to 2-1. Unfortunately for the visitors, that’s all they could muster Thursday night. Making his 12th appearance of the season, Dilauro turned in a stellar performance for the Braves, stopping 34 pucks and keeping his team in the game through the final 40 minutes. At the other end of the rink, Tyson Brouwer returned to the Dynamiters crease, making 20 saves for his 11th victory of the season. Dynamiters forward Brady Revie was ejected from the game late in the second period. No explanation was given for the misconduct handed down to the 18-year-old Cranbrook native and after the game, Bancks still wasn’t quite sure why Revie’s night ended early. “I believe he asked the referee where he was going for dinner after,” Bancks said with a laugh. While Richter tallied twice for the hosts, defenceman Trevor Van Steinburg earned two helpers along the way. After going pointless for four games (Oct. 31 to Nov. 8), Van Steinburg has settled in of late, registering four assists in four games since

The Kimberley Dynamiters brought a fivegame losing streak to an end with a 2-1 victory over the Spokane Braves Thursday night. “I think the fivegame losing streak helped us get some points across,” said Dynamiters head coach Jerry Backs Thursday night. “I thought [our team] did a great job [tonight]. I thought the forecheck was better. Our natural-zone forecheck was better and that’s what we were trying to accomplish.” Nitros captain Jason Richter led the way offensively, notching both goals for the hosts, who grabbed their first win since a 6-4 triumph over Golden Nov. 1. “It was huge,” Richter said Thursday night. “We’ve been a little bit down and we had a good practice this week. It really helped us out. Now going into Golden, we’ve finally got some confidence.” Both teams did all their scoring during the opening 20 minutes of play. Richter opened the festivities 2:10 into regulation with a power-play marker from high in the slot that beat Braves goaltender Trevor Dilauro glove side. Less than 10 minutes later, the Penticton native sent his 20th tally of the season to the back of the net, putting a little bit of heat on teammate Tyson Klingspohn for the team lead in the goal-scoring department. Klingspohn sits atop the league in goal-scoring with 21 markers, tied with Castlegar Rebels forward Bryan Lubin. “Every hockey team that is successful needs a Jason Richter,” Bancks said of his captain. “He is a guy who, when he is out there on the ice, he puts in such an effort -blocking shots, second effort everywhere, takes a hit. “Basically, he embarrasses guys into playing the way he plays. VANCOUVER Corey Perry’s scored the shootout winner as the Anaheim Ducks edged the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in NHL action Thursday night. Perry’s goal on Anaheim’s first shootout attempt was the only one the Ducks needed. They got another one from Jakob Silfverberg. Vancouver’s Radim Vrbata and Nick Bonino failed to score on their at-
tempts. The Ducks (12-4-5) earned their first win in five games while the Canucks lost for the second time in three contests. Anaheim also avenged a Nov. 9 home shootout loss to Vancouver. The Canucks (13-6-1) lost their first one-goal game this season. Bo Horvat, with his first NHL goal, Jannik Hansen and Radim Vrbata scored for the Canucks in regulation.
Andrew Cogliano, Ryan Getzlaf, and Matt Beleskey had the goals for the Ducks. Former Canucks centre Ryan Kesler played his first game in Vancouver since being traded to the Ducks. Fans showed little reaction at the start of the game as he was pictured on the scoreboard screen with the caption “Welcome back Ryan.” He was booed in the second period, overtime and the shootout.

On the heels of a 7-3 defeat at the hands of the Medicine Hat Tigers Wednesday, the Kootenay Ice are intent on getting back into the win column this weekend, facing three games in three nights. “We have a big week,” said forward Tim Bozon after Wednesday’s loss. “It’s important that everybody gets their rest. It’s important that everybody comes back for practice [Thursday] ready to go for a big weekend. Friday, Saturday, Sunday is going to be a huge weekend.” The Kootenay Ice open the weekend Friday at 7 p.m. against the Lethbridge Hurricanes (5-12-3-1). If you include Wednesday’s setback, the Ice will have played four games in five nights after the weekend wraps up, traveling to Medicine Hat Saturday for a rematch against the Tigers (16-41-1) before returning home to host the Moose Jaw Warriors (9-10-2-1)

OAKLAND, Calif. - Sio Moore sacked Alex Smith and started to celebrate in the Kansas City backfield with Oakland Raiders teammate Khalil Mack. The elaborate dance could be forgiven if the game had actually been over considering the Raiders hadn’t won a game in more than a year. The only problem was the game was still going and the Chiefs were at the line trying to run a fourth-down play. The Raiders were forced to call a timeout to stop the clock and then got one last stop, snapping a 16-game losing streak with a 24-20 victory over the Chiefs on Thursday night. “I don’t need any more of that,” safety Charles Woodson said. “I couldn’t believe it. TEHRAN, Iran - An Iranian-Canadian blogger who was sentenced to 19 years in prison for his writings has been pardoned by Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The news of the pardon of Hossein Derakhshan, who helped ignite blogging in Iran, was first reported by Iran’s semi-official ISNA news agency. It said authorities informed Derakhshan Associated Press
about his amnesty late Wednesday, when he returned to Tehran’s Evin prison from one of his occasional leaves. “I was released after six years,” said a brief message posted on Derakhshan’s Google Plus web page. “I thank God. Very grateful to the Ayatollah Khamenei.” The posting also thanked his supporters and his family, including his parents, his brother and sister and his

College employee receives BCCAT Award For the Townsman
College of the Rockies’ Articulation Officer, Karen Langan has been awarded the BC Council on Admissions & Transfer (BCCAT) Rising Star award at their joint annual meeting on November 14. The Rising Star Award recognizes an individual who, while early on in her career, demonstrates exceptional leadership and accomplishment in the area of transfer and articulation within the BC Transfer System. To be eligible, the recipient must have worked in the area of articulation for five years or less. Since becoming articulation officer, Langan’s achievements include updating the College’s transfer credit policy, developing College-wide articulation procedures and policies, maintaining an online database of provincial and international block transfer agreements on the College website and setting up numerous tracking systems to ensure smooth transfer credit processes for students. Some of the policies and procedures developed by Langan at COTR have been shared across the BCCAT system. “I find my position as Articulation Officer at COTR to be very rewarding,” Langan explains. “In my role I am able to help support student mobility between institutions which, in turn, offers them more options for their educational pathways. To be recognized by my peers for this work is an honour.” Articulation involves comparing the content of courses offered at College of the Rockies with courses at other post-secondary institutions to determine transferability of courses or programs from one institution to another. Langan not only searches out opportunities for students to transfer into College of the Rockies programs but also finds other institutions for College of the Rockies students to transfer to if they wish to complete a credential not available at the College. Will I be reunited with my daughter in the near future? Will my ex-husband and I settle our proceeds from the sale of our house? Feeling Tortured Dear Feeling Tortured: I had a conversation with my guides about your issues and this is what I have discovered: Q. Will she be reunited with her daughter in 2014? A. No Q. Will she be talking to her daughter in 2015? A. Yes, but there will still be problems in your dealings with her. woman to talk very little to this man. The reason for this is because all he wants to do with her is fight and stir trouble up in the family. He has a very cranky, mean disposition. Less talk on her part and more walking away from the chaos this man ensues would be a good policy to start. Anything you say to him will just be twisted and made into a lie. So save your breath and plan what you want to do with the rest of your life. On a personal note I think it’s time to let go and let God deal with these two relayou ASK WENDY tionships have. Now say this prayer as many times in a day as you wish. Angels of Power, Angels Divine, Reverse all Weakness, Let Strength be Mine. After you have said this prayer creatively visualize a big lion towering over you. See yourself with the strength of the king of the jungle. Right beside this huge lion see a tower of strength. ANNIE’S MAILBOX by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar Dear Annie: Two years ago, at the age of 62, I was forced to take early retirement from my teaching job. My pension is miniscule, and despite trying to find full-time work, I have only been able to string together part-time jobs. I have been divorced for 20 years, so there is no one else in my life to depend on financially. My days are consumed with trying to make ends meet, and as a result, I have no time or money for a personal life. I can’t afford to travel, my grown children are busy with their own lives, and my friends have spouses or grandchildren who keep them occupied. I can’t even attend church, because I need to work on Sundays. I spend evenings, weekends and sometimes holidays alone, so I turn on the TV or radio to simulate human voices. I’m fit, intelligent and in good health. I want to know what I’m supposed to do with the rest of my life, because it appears I am going to spend it alone. How can I get out of this rut? -- Indy Dear Indy: Take some of that time spent in front of the TV and do something that doesn’t require money. Volunteer at your local hospital, library or veterans association. The Salvation Army welcomes volunteers on holidays. You might make some friends in the process, but regardless, instead of feeling lonely, you will be out helping others, and that will take your mind off of your problems and lift your spirits. Dear Annie: My sister has a friend whose son is getting married. The woman is also an acquaintance of mine, but I never hear from her, and I’ve not seen her son in three years. My mother received an invitation to the bridal shower, and my name was also listed on the envelope. My mother is on a fixed income, and we could not afford a gift, so we didn’t attend the shower. A couple of weeks later, a wedding invitation arrived with my mother’s and sister’s names on it. When I didn’t receive an invitation of my own, I assumed I was not invited. I didn’t give it another thought. Well, the friend called my mom, and I picked up the phone. She asked whether I was coming to the wedding, and I stammered and handed the phone to my mother, who said she was sorry but neither of us could make it. The friend then told my sister she was very hurt that I hadn’t responded. She said the reason I didn’t get an invitation was because she didn’t have my address, which is a load of baloney. She sent the shower invitation to me at my mother’s. Should I feel bad about not responding to a wedding I wasn’t invited to? I’ve thought about sending her a note of apology, but I don’t think I’ve done anything wrong. -Tired of the Drama Dear Tired: It sounds like this friend invited your mother, and when you picked up the phone, she felt obligated to say she intended to invite you as well. But you are right that she easily could have obtained your address from your sister or mother. No, you do not have to RSVP for a wedding you were not invited to. But it might help smooth over the hard feelings if you send a card to the bride and groom with your very best wishes. Dear Annie: As a recently retired physician, may I add to your advice to “Slowly Falling Out of Love”? A patient once came to me with severe fatigue and lassitude, saying, “I can barely put one foot in front of the other.” He turned out to be profoundly hypothyroid, and treatment with gradually increasing doses of thyroid medication gave him his life back. “Slowly’s” husband needs a complete medical evaluation by a thinking physician. -- Patricia Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. EKFH depends on the generosity of public donations, third party fundraisers and its own special event initiatives. The foundation is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. Core Function: A full-time position, the Assistant Executive Director provides professional executive-level administration and fundraising support to the Foundation Executive Director and Board Chair, and other administrative support as required within the Foundation. The Assistant Executive Director also interacts with board members, senior hospital executives, hospital managers and donors, and works very closely with the Foundation’s executive team, other service providers and volunteers. EKFH is seeking a self-starter to perform the role of the Assistant Executive Director. This position will focus on the efficient day to day operation of the office and support of the Executive Director. The Assistant Executive Director will report to the Executive Director and the Board of Directors.
