Hawes: Rebuild relationships
Mayor-elect and new councillors set initial priorities Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Even before he takes office, mayor-elect Randy Hawes is meeting with the rest of the newly elected council members to discuss the work that has to be done to move Mission forward. “Everyone had a bit of a platform, and I appreciate it, “ said Hawes, who will be identifying priorities with fellow council members before presenting them at the inauguration ceremony on Dec. 1. One of the first things on Hawes’ list is to meet with district staff and repair relationships. “We have a staff morale problem,” said Hawes. “It has to be

MISSION RECORD
Japanese language students at Heritage Park Secondary School were deeply disappointed to find thousands of dollars worth of scrap metal they had been collecting was stolen from their school over the weekend. Their fundraising efforts were supposed to help offset the cost of a two-week trip to Japan at the end of the school year in June. “I feel annoyed,” said Owen Hildebrant, a Grade 10 student, who still plans to participate in the trip. “I didn’t think people would stoop that low,” said another student Amber Langley. “We’re high school students fundraising for a trip.” The students had been collecting scrap metal in the community for almost six months now, said teacher Linda Dickinson, who takes a group of students to Japan every
three years. “Japan is an expensive country. It’s not something the kids can work a couple of months for. They have to fundraise.” Students and their chaperones will visit several cities in Japan, including Mission’s sister, Oyama, where they will stay with local families. The trip will cost each student $4,000. The class rented two bins for the scrap metal last Friday and filled them up on Saturday. The material had been sorted and the bins were supposed to be picked up Monday. There were car batteries, copper wire, and even an aluminum boat in the mix. “It was six hours of work out in the cold,” explained Grade 10 student Devon Johnston. “Now it was all for nothing.” “Their enthusiasm has been dampened,” said Dickinson. “But this is a pretty determined

Tony Luck, who finished as runner-up in the race for mayor, is already eying the next civic election. “I’m not going away,” said Luck, who will be watching the new council closely. “I’ve had so many people tell me I should’ve run for council instead. I have a common sense approach to things.” While he plans to return to work as a financial consultant, Luck is also considering options to get involved LUCK in the community. He plans to take what he has learned on council in the past three years to create a better community to live in. “I don’t want to become a bitter person because I was defeated,” said Luck, who spoke about ways to educate voters and increase voter turnout in the next election earlier this week. He also wants to increase tourism in Mission and will be working on a sturgeon run for motorcyclists, similar to the Oyster Run in Anacortes, Washington, where thousands of people cruise through for entertainment, and food, including oysters.
“I believe tourism is the economic generator for Mission,” Luck shared. “I’m really excited about this. Luck said he will miss being on council, but feels he ran a good campaign and was encouraged by the people he met and the support he received. Unlike Luck, outgoing mayor Ted Adlem, who finished in third place, has no plans to run for office again. “I had my little stint at politics,” said Adlem. “Not many people get to be mayor of their community … I have no desire to do anything else politically. I absolutely will not run again.” ADLEM Adlem has enjoyed his time as mayor and before adjourning his last council meeting Monday night, he thanked the community for the opportunity to serve and district staff for their work. Looking back over the past few years, Adlem said he wouldn’t have done anything different. “The voter is always right,” he said. Adlem and his Citizens for Responsible Municipal Government (CRMG) team were defeated in the polls and failed to win a seat around the council table.

Jenny Stevens lone councillor to return Carol Aun MISSION RECORD
Jenny Stevens is the only council member who was returned to office last weekend. It’s the second consecutive election Stevens has managed to hold on to her seat while the rest of the team either didn’t run again, or was rejected by voters. ‘I’m not sure how I survived,” said Stevens, who answered questions throughout the election campaign, but kept a low profile otherwise. “I didn’t get as many votes as I did last time. I gather there was some concerns about me being old and competent with the job.” Stevens explained she underwent dozens of health checks prior to committing to another term in office. “All they came up with is I’m blind, with a bad back,” said the 77-yearold Stevens. “Otherwise, I’m disgustingly healthy. Everything else still works.” Stevens topped the polls in 2011 with 3,720 votes when she ran with the Citizens for Responsible Municipal Govern-
ment (CRMG) team, but her popularity dropped with a fifth-place finish in the 2014 election with 2,587 votes. Stevens joined CRMG more than three years ago because she liked the concept. “It started with really good ideals and principles,” she noted. “In the first 18 months we achieved a lot of stuff … but personalties took over … not everyone was getting a voice.” Stevens said she, like others, tried to get the team back on track, but the disagreements started to come out in council meetings. She resigned from the group and introduced a lack-of-confidence motion in the mayor earlier this year, which was supported by three other councillors who also broke from the group. “It was a turning point on council,” said Stevens. “CRMG could’ve been a great thing.” This is Stevens’ sixth consecutive term on council, making her the longest serving councillor in recent history. Stevens was first elected to council in

1999. Randy Hawes was mayor at the time, and now she is looking forward to working with Hawes again. Stevens told The Record that serving as a councillor is her way of giving back to a community that helped her when she first came to Mission in 1982 with six children, an absent husband and a few thousand dollars to her name. “I had a tough time surviving that year, and I wouldn’t have without the Mission people,” recalled Stevens, who was working as a physiotherapist at the time. “Now I’m paying a debt with a job I love doing.” Her biggest issue this term is to create more jobs in Mission and get more people involved in the community.

Published & printed by Black Press Ltd. at 33047 First Avenue, Mission V2V 1G2
Above all, respect for citizens
Three years ago, Mission voters cleaned out council chambers, save for one. Last Saturday night, they did exactly the same thing. The exception was again Coun. Jenny Stevens, the sole political survivor of the 2011 purge. The most recent house-cleaning came as little surprise. As recently observed in this space, CRMG (Citizens for Responsible Municipal Government) imploded this year on a number of fronts. Despite a few new faces, the slate was faced with an immense political hurdle to overcome in this election – the loss of public trust and respect. The party infighting, the inadequate response to allegations of conflict of interest, the seeming lack of concern over an exodus of city staff, a motion of non-confidence in the mayor, the suggestions of a suspicious link to a nasty poster campaign – few slates could make all that go away in voters’ minds in the weeks before an election. Everyone makes mistakes, but the greatest one among them for CRMG in its final year was not to acknowledge and deal effectively with them.
QUESTION OF THE WEEK Are you satisfied with the election results in Mission?
With the exception of one, even former members who split away from the group citing deep differences could not shed the CRMG negativity surrounding anyone associated with the slate, past or present. It’s all unfortunate, because this group did make significant accomplishments through their term. Their initial objectives were laudable, and their commitment genuine. In that spirit, outgoing Mayor Ted Adlem and his former team deserve thanks for their efforts. It is not easy to serve in public office, and it takes a great deal of energy and sacrifice to do so. The hours are long and the pay is not lavish by any stretch. Voters should never lose sight of that. Congratulations to the new mayor, councillors and trustees. We wish them wisdom and success. They can take away lessons from the last civic government – both in terms of working to make Mission a better place, and above all, maintaining openness and respect for the citizens who place their trust in elected representatives. There are few undertakings more difficult, and few honours greater.

What to do with school boards? Tom Fletcher
B.C. Views The saddest manifestation of British Columbia’s modern democracy has produced its judgment, with the election of school trustees for the next four years. There are still independent, community-minded trustees, but mostly “boards of education” have become the neglected, exploited stepchild of B.C. politics. Teacher union locals and CUPE-dominated “labour councils” organize candidate forums and ask most of the questions, often to former teachers holding and seeking school board seats. Unions finance the campaigns of those who pledge to act as a bullhorn for constant demands for more provincial money, and instruct their members to vote for what should be called the Conflict of Interest slate. This has been going on for so long in B.C. it is seen as normal. Trustees who most loudly
plump for their union masters tend to win, thanks to low turnout. The public mostly doesn’t give a damn, since school property tax authority was centralized in Victoria many years ago, largely because of this special interest pressure. The classic case is in Coquitlam, where one could almost hear the theme from The Godfather as local CUPE boss Dave Ginter appeared before the board of education in February. He informed the elected trustees that their collective financial acumen wasn’t up to his standards and some of them would have to go this fall. “Obviously, the chore I have is to find new trustees,” Ginter clarified in an interview with the Tri-City News as the union’s candidate selection machine stirred to life. Ginter seems to have made them an offer they couldn’t refuse on Saturday, with formerly union-blessed trustees turfed out in favour of a new group. Then there’s Vancouver Island, where the 1970s survived, at least until Saturday night. Cowichan school board got itself fired by the province in 2012 for refusing to submit a balanced budget. Two of the trustees who think the job is to flout the balanced budget
rule and instead demand a “needs budget” ran again. They were joined on a slate by two others who apparently still believe the answer to
Do we really need them anymore? every problem is to shout for “more government funding.” They didn’t get in, as voters appear to have been unimpressed by seeing their school board replaced by a provincially appointed manager for two years. That brings up a modest proposal. How about an appointed trustee for each of the 60 school districts? School boards have lost authority over taxation, curriculum (another area of constant union social engineering pressure) and now labour relations. Do we really need them any more? After the 2013 B.C. election, the Christy
Clark government wasted no time taking control of union bargaining on behalf of school districts. Trustees were pushed out of the bargaining agency, no longer trusted to represent taxpayers for that duty either. The puppet role of some school trustees was evident in the recent teacher strike. When the province opted to pay parents for the disruption, there was a chorus of protest from those supposedly elected to represent the interests of parents and taxpayers. School tax rates are now set by cabinet order, and the B.C. Liberal government is considering a move to regulate local industrial taxes. (This would presumably be to keep union-influenced municipalities from trying to get too many golden eggs from those liquefied natural gas plants.) Would Education Minister Peter Fassbender and his team continue their remake by amalgamating or eliminating school boards? Not likely. With a rare teacher settlement in place, trustees will have less incentive to grandstand. And their meetings may become something more than union beef sessions. YOUR VIEWS Thank you to outgoing politicians In political campaigns, like war, the first casualties are truth, clarity and civility. It is unfortunate that we have reduced politics from a contest of ideas to a campaign of character assassination. However, the 2014 election is over and it is time to restore the first casualties. We can begin by
expressing appreciation to the outgoing mayor, councillors and school trustees for their three years of dedicated service to our community. They set aside their personal and family lives for the well-being of Mission and have given their best for us. We need also to express appreciation to the incoming

Stealing from children The children of HPSS have been collecting scrap metal for several months now to contribute to their trip to Japan in 2015. On Saturday the bins arrived and we filled two with the generous help of our Mission community and families. By Sunday evening one of the bins had been nearly emptied and the scrap stolen. Stolen from children! I am shocked and disappointed and feel that the community needs to know that the things they donated in good faith have been stolen. Please help our kids get started again on their fund raising which has so hatefully hit a brick wall because of theft in our community. The children of HPSS would appreciate your help. Serena Trinder

District to release details on downtown drug store ban Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

Details that led the outgoing council’s decision to ban pharmacies and medical clinics from downtown, will be released to the public. The ban resulted in a successful lawsuit by the owners of a pharmacy who wanted to open on First Avenue.
In one of Coun. Nelson Tilbury’s last moves on council on Nov. 3 (he did not run for re-election), he asked for all correspondence, including letters, emails, and legal opinions, related to the “drug store issue” to be released to the public. “I support this being released if it is done so
by our staff at city hall,” said Coun. Jenny Stevens prior to the election. The motion was approved unanimously. All the information related to the pharmacy has been kept confidential, even after the case wrapped up in court. Mission’s chief administrative officer

Ken Bjorgaard said staff will be looking for all the records, but could not estimate when the information will be released. “We’re searching to see the extent of the records and to see if we have to get records from the archives,” said Bjorgaard. “It’s too soon to tell when it will be.” In May 2012, Mission council introduced rezoning legislation to remove “pharmacy” and “medical clinic” from the core commercial downtown one zone, blocking the application of a proposed pharmacy at the site of the old community policing centre on First Avenue. Life Pharmacy Inc. wanted to open a walk-in clinic and pharmacy downtown, providing vaccines, a diabetes clinic, heart clinic and prescription drugs, including methadone. At a public hearing on the issue in June 2012, Life Pharmacy representatives said they purchased the building at 33133 First Ave. with the understanding
they would be allowed to operate a pharmacy. They said there were unfounded community rumours that their enterprise would be a marijuana clinic and needle exchange. Mission council passed the bylaw two months later, saying the move would help revitalize downtown. Stevens and Tilbury opposed the change as both felt it was aimed at one business. The owner of the building, listed as 0773184 B.C. Ltd, launched legal action against the district in June 2012 after third reading of the bylaw was approved. According to the petition in court, the numbered company purchased the property after it received assurances from the District of Mission that the intended use was permitted. In March 2013, the B.C. Supreme Court ordered the District of Mission to issue a building permit for a medical clinic and pharmacy on First Avenue.

The garden was created by the school’s environmental team and community volunteers Barb Strachan, Jim Taylor and O’Grady. Aboriginal artists Peter Gong and Roxanne McCallum carved and painted in the courtyard. It took the team a year

to build the garden, which contains many native plants and ferns. The garden was built to honour aboriginal culture, enhance environmental awareness in the school, and to provide a place for students and staff to visit, O’Grady added.
The garden is located in the school’s courtyard and will be maintained by aboriginal students and Hatzic’s environmental team. “Their tireless efforts make our community a wonderful place to learn and grow,” said O’Grady.

Bateman’s Keenan Adams-Barausse eludes a tackle from Thomas Janke during last Friday’s quarterfinal. JOHN MORROW PHOTO
Roadrunners advance to Subway Bowl quarterfinals The Mission Roadrunners couldn’t score a single point through two quarters of the Nov. 14 game against the Robert Bateman Timberwolves, but when they finally developed a taste for the end zone, the offence quickly became unstoppable. The Roadrunners scored 35 straight second-half points in a runaway victory over the Timberwolves that set up a semifinal clash against the Carson Graham Eagles. Bateman perplexed the third-ranked Mission team early with a new offensive tactic the Roadrunners weren’t prepared to counter. Led by running back Austen Zacher and receiver Keenan AdamsBarausse, the Timberwolves put together several successful drives, but didn’t manage to put any points on the board. “They really surprised us with their offence. It was a wildcat-type offence and they ran it well and we were slow to make adjustments,” said Mission coach Danny Jakobs. Understandably concerned
after his team entered halftime tied 0-0, Jakobs gave his version of “the speech” to his players. “I said, ‘Most of you have been with us since Grade 8 … and you’re pretty much putting in half an effort right now,’ ” recalls Jakobs. “ ‘Is this how you want it to end? You’ve worked your butt off in the weight room, you’ve played years of football with us. If you’re going to go out, you’re going to go out with a full effort.’ ” It worked. Stymied on the first drive of the half, the Timberwolves botched the snap to their punter on the fourth down, and handed the ball back to Mission deep in Bateman territory. Roadrunners quarterback Jesse Walker made no mistake as he powered the ball through into the end-zone for the first score of the game. Walker would add another touchdown rushing, and then a third one on a 75-yard punt return. Inder Herr added an 11-yard rushing score, and then threw a 45-yard TD reception to Reilly Demarco after
taking over quarterback duties from Walker late in the game. Landon Rayburn had 12 tackles and two sacks for the Roadrunner defence. The game was played at Abby Senior’s Panther Field, since all playoff competitions must take place on turf. It’s the same field where Mission experienced their only conference loss (14-12 courtesy of Abby Senior) on Nov. 7, but Jakobs actually considers that memory a good incentive for his team. “We needed a game like that against Abby where we were pushed, things didn’t go our way, we took too many penalties, and we lost,” he said. “It was a good loss for us. It refocused us and let us know that there are teams out there than can beat us.” The Roadrunners are now one of eight teams remaining in Double-A competition for the Subway Bowl championship. They will take on Carson Graham at Panther Field on Friday at 3 p.m.

Most people have at least considered, if not already started, some form of estate planning. They may have spoken with a lawyer, or tried to draft up their own wills. However, most people don’t think about planning for unexpected events that might happen during their lifetime which might make them incapable of managing their affairs. While we may think “that would never happen to me!” the unfortunate truth is that an accident may leave you physically incapacitated, or a disease or illness may leave you mentally incapacitated at any moment. While it makes sense to prepare for the inevitable, why wouldn’t you want to prepare for the unexpected? There are two documents every person should consider having in order to prepare for the unexpected: (1) an Enduring Power of Attorney, which deals with financial and legal decision-making, and (2) a Representation Agreement. This article will focus on Representation Agreements, but if you have questions about Enduring Powers of Attorney, speak with a lawyer who can discuss your options. Ultimately, the purpose of a Representation Agreement is to allow adults to arrange in advance how, when and by whom, decisions about their health care or personal care will be

made when they are no longer capable of making those decisions independently. If a Representation Agreement is not prepared and an adult later becomes incapable of managing his or her affairs, a “Temporary Substitute Decision-Maker” (TSDM) will be appointed from a pre-determined list, or the Public Guardian and Trustee of B.C. may be appointed to make decisions on your behalf. If a dispute arises, as they often do, family or friends will find themselves applying to court to become Committee of the incapable person. Unfortunately, court applications come at a cost and regularly those costs can exceed thousands of dollars in legal expenses, and other out-of-pocket expenses. The existence of a Representation Agreement can often avoid all of that hassle and expense. More importantly, a Representation Agreement creates a contractual relationship between you and your Representative to ensure they act in good faith to carry out your wishes. Many people may still refer to this concept as a “living will.” However, you can include basic directions regarding whether to continue life-supporting care or ensure your last days are in comfort and with the necessary support you desire. Although our hope is to live long, full and productive lives, the importance of preparing for not only death but incapacity can be an extremely important and useful exercise. Fraser Valley author Raisa Stone will be sharing her stories about Ukrainian families, culture, and food at the Mission library on Nov. 26 when she reads from her book, Baba’s Kitchen: Ukrainian Soul Food.
Santa’s coming to town!
The book is a humourous memoir told by Baba, a no-nonsense Ukrainian grandmother, who also shares her traditional recipes. Baba may be fictional, but the stories she tells are real. Stone, 53, describes the work as a book of essays which sup-

port the history of Ukrainian recipes. The stories were collected through conversations with family, friends and neighbours throughout Stone’s life. There is even a murder confession Stone heard from her neighbour. The old woman died years ago, but Stone remembers the tale and the vegetable soup recipe she shared. Both are in the book. There are also stories and recipes from Stalinist survivors, Holocaust survivors and immigrants to Canada. There are stories within a story and Baba speaks about them all like they were hers. “I started listening to stories when I was a toddler,” shared Stone, who remembers helping her mother cut

dough for peroogies when she e was just fourr years old. “I take cooking with my grandmother seriously,” she said. Since the first edition was published in 2012, Stone has been receiving letters from people around the world who want to find stories about their families and learn more about Ukraine. “When you cook together, you talk,” said Stone. “Ukrainians usually spend the entire day cooking together. You can spend the whole day making cabbage rolls and perogies.” There are 190 recipes in the book, along with a chapter on folk rem-
edies as supplements. The first edition was as an e-book, but the second edition, which is self published, contains new and expanded stories and is available as a paperback. Ordering information is available at ukrainiansoulfood.ca. Stone will be reading from her book as the narrator Baba from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the library, 33247 Second Ave. For more information call 604-826-6610.

PARADE PARADE
Columbia: Voices from the Frontier” (Harbour Publishing) and explores the province’s history through the voices of early settlers. It includes the story of Cornelius Kelleher, the son of an Irish immigrant father and a Nooksack First Nation mother. Kelleher was born near what would become Mission and was schooled at St.
Mary’s Mission School. Cornelius’ dad, Mortimer, left Ireland in the early 1850s, landing in San Francisco and later moving to Fort Langley with word of the gold rushes of the early 1860s. He settled on a ranch on Sumas Prairie in 1868, but could not manage the flooding waters on one side of the river and moved to the other side, which is the site of Mission
today. The Kelleher family story is shared in more detail in “Echoes of British Columbia,” which is based on conversations recorded by legendary CBC Radio journalist Imbert Orchard between 1959 and 1966. “ Making Dreams Come True”
Do homes sell in December? While market activity definitely does peak in the Spring months, December is certainly not dead. For example, in April 2014 in Abbotsford, there were 107 detached homes sold, 41 townhomes sold and 38 condos sold. In comparison, in December 2013 there were 54 detached sales, 25 townhome sales and 26 condo sales. So while the numbers are lower you can see that there still are Buyers out there even in the ‘off’ month. Plus the inventory is a lot lower at this time of the year meaning less competition.
I have been a resident of Abbotsford for over 34 years and an Abbotsford Notary for over 22. I specialize in real estate transactions, Wills and Powers of Attorney. There is none more experienced. Whether you are buying or selling real estate, whether it is bare land, a house, townhouse, condo or mobile home, before you make the decision for your representative, give my office a call. You will find us not only knowledgeable and professional but also accommodating to your schedule, if necessary.
Well folks, I originally started selling farms and ranches many years ago, in 1979, and was lucky to be joined by my son for the last 14 years. We do all kinds of farms! We know them and it is our love to see agriculture continue, wether it is in the valley or the 100 Mile House Area. Having lived on a farm our whole life with a strong University background in agriculture we get the job done. We offer the best of advertising, pictorial promotions, websites, and overseas promotions. We try to keep in touch with the latest municipal, provincial, and federal changes, which will encourage the new farmer starting out.

WHAT IS IMPORTANT?
• Demystifying mental health issues workshop, 9:30 a.m. at Mission Mental Health Centre, 7298 Hurd Street. For more info call Shelley at 604-8145640.
If we take a close and honest look at our lives, we can probably determine what is most important to us. That is, we should consider whether our primary focus is on people or things. We sometimes may get so involved with “situations” and “possessions” that we can lose perspective as to what should be most meaningful to us. The Bible has some insight as to what should be foremost in our lives; it tells us that the most important commandment is that we should love the Lord our God with all our heart, with all our soul, with all our mind and with all our strength. The second is this: Love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:29-31). Jesus had few possessions during His life here on earth, but He was almost always involved with people. Today, more than ever, possessions are certainly necessary. And although there is nothing wrong with owning a nice home or an automobile, or anything else that makes our lives more pleasant, we should always be aware that God wants us to have good moral values and meaningful interactions with family and friends. God’s friendship is ours when we share it with others.

angler Britt Myers wanted a Toyota Tundra equipped with everything you would want to go fishing and I think he got his wish. It is painted in a matte gray finish from front to back
with yellow and black tribal graphics. Front bumper is made by Fab Fours and comes with PIAA fog and driving lights. There is a Warn 15000lb winch tucked inside this massive bumper. Rolling Big Power provided the custom grille. Bushwacker fender flares help cover the 37” tall Nitto mud grappler tires mounted on 22” Moto metal black rims. The folks at Pro Comp suspension provided the 6” suspension lift. It features a MX 2.75c series coil over front shocks and MX6 adjustable rear shocks. In case you are wondering how you would get in this thing, Bestop has built a running board step that raises and lowers automatically when you open and close the doors. A smaller step folds down manually just in front of the rear tires. This helps you reach the custom-made roof rack cargo basket. The cargo basket has Rigid 50” LED lights recessed in the front, back and sides, giving plenty of light to see all around. The canopy is built by Leer and has painted fiberglass panels replacing the windows. The rear is truly unique. The canopy gate and vehicle tailgate are connected and attached to a rolling platform that slides out to carry a beverage fridge, tool compartment, fishing tackle, and more! It looks like a showroom out of a fishing store. The cabin features all black factory leather seats with a custom made center console. Instead of cup holders, a panel of switches takes its place where the driver can easily access the various powered equipment. The dash features a graphic montage of fish skeletons to get you in the mood. The door panels are equipped with twin speakers and a fish finder monitor. I guess you would have to dip the front tire in the river to make it work. The factory 5.7-litre engine has been upgraded to feature a Toyota racing development supercharger and a cold air intake. A custom exhaust system by MBRP finishes off the engine compartment. Fuel economy? – If you have to ask, you can’t afford it. Is it practical? – Maybe not, but it sure would look cool to take it fishing and show off to your buddies. Sticker price: $125,000, to a Redneck . . . Priceless. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca
