Lacombe Memorial Centre (LMC) Lights Display The lights display at the Lacombe Memorial Centre is a testament to our community spirit. After the first year of the festival, our residents told us that the existing lights display left them wanting more! Armed with this information several sponsors were secured, and that has allowed the display to grow to its current size and scope. There are now over 50,000 lights and many people have commented that the display is a positive indication of what can be accomplished when the community unites around a common purpose. “There was a need identified and our sponsors literally lined up to help us out. It has been such a tremendous initiative to watch build and grow,” said Community and Economic Development Manager Guy Lapointe. “We’ve received a number of emails and well wishes from residents thanking us for the hard work that was done with the LMC lights.”
This year, a group has been hard at work planning a holiday surprise for everyone taking in the Tree Lighting Ceremony.
“I believe our plans will elevate the tree display to a holiday destination not to be missed in Central Alberta,” said Lapointe.

Have you ever seen the pictures from that carnival in Quebec and wondered what it would be like to ride a giant ice slide? Well here’s your chance! Weather permitting; we hope to have an ice slide available for kids of all ages located in Lest We Forget Park. It’s sort of like a miniluge set against the festive lights, and it’s sure to be a holiday favourite. You can bring your slide if you want, however, a good set of snow pants will work just as well. If Old Man Winter does not agree to our terms and holds out on the required snow, we will instead supply an ice throne, which will serve as a great holiday photo opportunity for friends and family.

Selfie with Santa Santa Claus usually make e his an annnual stopover in Lacombe forr the anan nnual Tim Horton’s Santa Claus Paaus Pa arade, and after flipping on the e lightss display with the Mayor, he dashess off to the North Pole to continue ntinue his work. But after seeing so many smiling faces in the crowds last year, he felt it behooved him to make ake a bigger commitment to our community. So this year, Santa a has agreed to stick around for a while after the parade and make himself available for photos with children and families. He wants to keep it a lowowmaintenance affair, so people ple can bring their own cameras ras and grab a quick selfie with the he big man himself. All we ask is that you please keep the picctures to a minimum to allow w Santa to get to as many kidss and families as possible.

Brrrr. It’s cold. You just never know what the weather will be like on Parade day. So pack lots of layers. Fill a backpack with gloves, scarves, and hats. Santa takes his time and you can get cold waiting - so come prepared.
Best place to see the Parade. No matter where you stand along the route, you’ll see the parade in all its glory. Just be sure to arrive early. Spots fill up fast.
Parking along the route. While there may be no parking right along the route, there are public parking lots near. Check out the festival map for a complete list of available parking.
Nearest food locations. The parade runs right past a number of restaurants. Also, the 1st Lacombe Scouts are cooking up Chili and Anna Maria’s is good for a quick bite – both of which are located right of the Lacombe Memorial Centre.
Let’s have a green parade. Hot cocoa is an essential part of the parade experience. If you can, please pack your reusable mugs. Not only do they keep cocoa warm, but they make for less trash on our city’s streets.
Is he here yet? Santa works on North Pole time. Waiting for the parade to start can be tough on little ones. Come prepared with colouring books and toys. Feel free to visit shops and stores for a quick warm up. The parade route has changed slightly this year; be sure to check out the festival map to plan out your spot.

Last year’s world record attempt for the Largest Human Christmas Tree was an inspiring event for everyone who had an opportunity to participate. There was the build up, some drama, last second heroics, and finally success! When the final formation was put into place and the crowd started to spontaneously sing Christmas carols, it was hard not smile. So the question we have now is just how to top last year’s experience? Why, by forming a giant snowman of course! We are asking everyone to come out and support our Guinness world record attempt once again but this year the stakes are a little different. If you recall, last year’s record was broken repeatedly over the holiday season. We hardly got to enjoy our victory before another community snatched the record from under our noses. So this year, we would like to set our target ever higher with 1,500 participants. With the regional, provincial and even national news coverage received last year, we believe the interest in this new attempt will be higher than ever! As well, this will be a new record – the Largest Human Snowman – and other communities may not be able to organize a similar attempt this year. We hope that this will allow us to perhaps enjoy our victory just a little longer.

Lumenight/ Christmas around the World As always, we have a fun-filled evening planned for Cranna Lake this year. Where else in the region can you experience fire dancing and ice sculpting on the same evening? Or make your very own lantern or perhaps a handmade ornament for the Christmas tree? It is always fun to fill out your secret wish for the upcoming year and attach it to the Wishing Tree in the hope that it will come true. Or try snowshoeing; it is not as easy as it looks. You can complement the cool outdoor experiences at Lumenight by warming up in the Lacombe Jr. High School gymnasium and tasting the holiday season fare of many cultures. It’s like touring the world without ever leaving the friendly confines of Lacombe. Treats are available with a small monetary donation to the food bank.

Snow Way You may notice that the Main Street Light Poles have a bit of a different look this year. As the lights display has grown, we really wanted to see the impact spread beyond the Lacombe Memorial Centre itself ! The new ornaments bring a fresh look to the downtown for the holiday season. It also helps to promote a signature feel for the downtown area. In the years to come, additional snowmen will be added to the side streets to really pull the look together. This is in line with the City’s Downtown Area Development Plan goals, which focus on place-making and revitalization efforts, but to the average resident all that really matters is that it has a super fun and festive look. We hope you enjoy!

What’s up with Santa I know that right about now you are probably curious about what I am up to. Just what does Santa do when I am not making toys? I actually have taken on a bit of an exercise routine this year so that I can make some room for all of your milk and cookies. Trust me; packing on 5,000,000,000 calories in one evening takes some healthy eating and good old fashioned hard work. Right now it’s me eating the carrots not the reindeer. As an added benefit, I have been asked to try out for Dancing with the Stars, although I will probably pass as we tend to vacation after months of hard work. Anyway, I am also following internet chatter to see just what kids are looking for this year. Usually I have the elves test out a few ideas to see just what sparks your interest. I never thought that crazy idea for a ninja turtle would ever be taken seriously. I also spend a lot of time practic-
ing with the reindeer. They hibernate for a good part of the year, saving up their energy for Christmas Eve. When they awake, they’re out of practice, so we need to do some intense drilling in the weeks leading up to Christmas. If you see a red light in the evening sky, it might just be Rudolph leading the team on some last minute training runs. One of my favourite things to do every year is come to Lacombe for your Light Up the Night festival. Your community sure knows how to throw a party so I always make sure to include it in my busy calendar. As you can imagine, our internet connection can be a little finicky at my workshop with all of the snow and cold weather we get every year. So I always recommend that you take the time to write me a personal letter and bring it down to the parade. My friends from Canada Post have
36 Light Up the Night Festival Guide 2014
once again agreed to collect your letters along the route. Your letters always make for some great reading on my return flight to the North Pole. This year, I have also agreed to stick around after the parade for some pictures at the Lacombe Memorial Centre. Be sure to stop by the Selfie with Santa station to get your picture with me. Anyway, I better get back to the treadmill. Be good and I’ll see you real soon.

Twas the Night before Christmas Clement Clarke Moore (1779 - 1863) wrote the poem Twas the night before Christmas also called “A Visit from St. Nicholas” in 1822. It is now the tradition in many American families to read the poem every Christmas Eve. The poem ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ has redefined our image of Christmas and Santa Claus. Prior to the creation of the story of ‘Twas the night before Christmas’ St. Nicholas, the patron saint of children, had never been associated with a sleigh or reindeers! Clement Moore, the author of the poem Twas the night before Christmas, was a reticent man and it is believed that a family friend, Miss H. Butler, sent a copy of the poem to the New York Sentinel who published the poem. The condition of publication was that the author of Twas the night before Christmas was to remain anonymous. The first publication date was 23rd December 1823 and it was an immediate success. It was not until 1844 that Clement Clarke Moore claimed ownership when the work was included in a book of his poetry.
Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, In hopes that St Nicholas soon would be there. The children were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads. And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below. When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, But a miniature sleigh, and eight tinny reindeer. With a little old driver, so lively and quick, I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. More rapid than eagles his coursers they came, And
he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name! “Now Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen! On, Comet! On, Cupid! on, on Donner and Blitzen! To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all!” As dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky. So up to the house-top the coursers they flew, With the sleigh full of Toys, and St Nicholas too. And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof The prancing and pawing of each little hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around, Down the chimney St Nicholas came with a bound. He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot, And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot. A bundle of Toys he had flung on his back, And he looked like a peddler, just opening his pack. His eyeshow they twinkled! his dimples how merry! His cheeks
42 Light Up the Night Festival Guide 2014
were like roses, his nose like a cherry! His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow, And the beard of his chin was as white as the snow. The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath. He had a broad face and a little round belly, That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly! He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf, And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself ! A wink of his eye and a twist of his head, Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And filled all the stockings, then turned with a jerk. And laying his finger aside of his nose, And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose! He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ‘ere he drove out of sight, “Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night!”
