Len ore and Len

Age doesn’t define us, it merely reminds us of our limitations.

Lenore Cook knows her physical limitations but certainly is not restrained by it in enjoying an active lifestyle. “At 85, she is vibrant and young at heart.” A wife mother and grandmother, Lenore defines her life by the number of golf swings, in–the-moment experiences with her friends and family and, yes, the number of countries she and her husband Len can visit by cruise ship. Lenore’s life changed in 2002, just three years after moving to the Comox Valley from Ontario she was, diagnosed with a faulty aortic valve. Up to then, her congestive problems, diagnosed in her early 60s had been carefully managed at St. Joseph’s. But now she needed to undergo a valve replacement. Not 10 years following that surgery, Lenore was again experiencing a shortness of breath, swelling in the limbs and water retention, all the classic symptoms of congestive heart failure. An echocardiogram (ECG) revealed that the replaced valve was failing. Follow up diagnostic treatment at St. Joseph’s discovered something far worse, an aneurism that was ready to burst. Had her family physician and cardiac team decided Lenore not fit to withstand another, more strenuous procedure, her outcome would have been far worse. One pacemaker, one replaced valve, another repaired valve and one stent later, and Lenore is right back to leading an active life again. Len calls her the “Bionic Woman.” Lenore is grateful for her new lease on life. “I feel indebted to St. Joseph’s for the diagnoses and interventions along the way,” praises Lenore. “We are so fortunate to have the treatment and care right here in our own neighbourhood. It’s such a wonderful compliment to go with the level of treatment I had received in Victoria.” Lenore’s story is a beautiful one with a happy outcome and there are many more stories, like hers, that can and should be shared. With a growing population and aging demographic, heart disease is steadily on the rise. Increasingly each day heart attacks and strokes devastates the lives of patients and their families. According to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, one in three Canadians will die from heart disease or stroke. Everyday St. Joseph’s Emergency Department moves into action to treat patients with chest complaints. But heart disease doesn’t have to end lives. Fortunately, today there are many innovative treatments and techniques to help patients like Lenore in preventing to diagnosing, and treating heart attacks and strokes.

St. Joseph’s Foundation has an exciting mission for 2015! Our goal is to raise $182,500 to purchase this new innovative cardiac care equipment • Pulmonary Function and Exercise Stress Test Machine • 3 New Overnight Pulse Oximeters (wrist worn) • A New Holter Monitor system

This equipment will provide many patient benefits that include: • decreased wait times for treatment • ease and comfort in use

• cvhospitalfoundat

• highly accurate readings • faster, more efficient patient testing

This new equipment will allow the cardiac care unit to reach a new level of technology in diagnosis and monitoring. In turn, this ensures that until acute care services move to the new Comox Valley Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital will continue to fulfill its mandate of providing comprehensive care with compassion to its patients. All this equipment will be available for transfer to the new hospital to support cardiac care services.

A bonus is that this equipment will be capable of connecting to the Island-wide electronic health records system. Patients’ ECG records from other hospitals on the Island and will be available to their local physicians and specialists on a computer network. This means reduced travel time, speedy assessments, and valuable communication between hospitals physicians and staff. “Having the latest cardiac equipment to treat patients is critical to providing great care and saving lives,” explains Jane Murphy, President/CEO of St. Joseph’s General Hospital. “St. Joseph’s must continually update the equipment and technology to ensure that the people of the Comox Valley receive the very best care today and though the transition to the new hospital in 2017.” Because of the generosity of donors to our Hospital Foundation, St. Joseph’s delivers quality and diverse health care throughout the Comox Valley and surrounding communities. Please consider supporting this 2015 mission by kindly returning this cut out donation form below or making a donation through the website. We wish to sincerely thank you for your thoughtfulness. From our hearts and home to yours, St. Joseph’s General Hospital wishes you and your beloved a wonderful Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year. Sincerely,

St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation Today and Tomorrow Being of service to the community is at the heart of the St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation. It remains important today and will be in the future as we look toward the master plan for health care in our region when acute care services will transition to a new hospital in 2017. Established in 1993, the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation has built a solid reputation to financially support the provision of health care in the Comox Valley. The Foundation has started the process and will soon undergo a period of transition as it expands its mandate to encompass the new Island Health Comox Valley Hospital while continuing to support St. Joseph’s General Hospital in its changing role. Both the community and Island Health have been very supportive and have encouraged the Foundation to expand its mandate to financially support both facilities so that we can continue to ensure the best possible care is available. As we begin on our journey of evolution, we will continue to ensure that Comox Valley health Care is the very best, today and into the future with educational support to staff, environmental improvements and equipment upgrades. Whether retired to the Comox Valley, reside elsewhere but continue to call the Valley home, raising a young family, or planning for retirement, we can all play a part in supporting local health care for this region.

How Your Donations

have

Helped

We are incredibly grateful to the local businesses, individuals, organizations and service clubs that support our hospital year after year. Because of the generosity from the community St. Joseph’s Hospital was able to enhance technology and improve patient care in many areas in 2014. Some examples are outlined below. ✓ • 4 Computerized Ambulatory Drug Delivery Pumps- these pumps can be pro❏ grammed to deliver medication at a constant rate or a demand dose at a specified time to patients at home so patients may be able to be discharged from the hospital. ✓ • Equipment to support the new Cystoscopy Clinic ❏

Please consider joining the Foundation this year as a monthly donor. Your monthly donation can be as little as $5.00 per month and will provide St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation and the Comox Valley Hospital with a sustainable funding source. And with your charitable tax receipt, you are eligible to win two WestJet tickets.

✓ • Annie Resuscitation Training Doll – to enhance staff education ❏

Imagine for a moment the impact accident, illness or injury can have on you, your loved ones or a friend. Please join us in our quest today and together we can help save lives, improve lives and even begin lives here in the Comox Valley.

Here, Now and Beyond Changing Role of St Joseph’s General Hospital With the new Island Health Comox Valley Hospital opening in 2017, and the transfer of acute care services to the new hospital, the role of St Joseph’s will evolve and change. During this transition St. Joseph’s first priority is to continue to deliver safe, accessible health care services of high quality that meet needs of the community. “Our community is so very generous to St Joseph’s be it in the form of donations, charitable gifts or volunteer service”, shared Jane Murphy, President and CEO of St Joseph’s. “We are so grateful for this support and it has allowed St. Joseph’s to provide exceptional service to the community and has been key in supporting the hospital in its recent achievement of Accreditation with Exemplary Standing (the highest award possible) from Accreditation Canada”. Where it is deemed essential to support the delivery of quality patient care and meet the industry’s safety standards St Joseph’s is continuing to complete minor renovations, enhance technology and develop programs. The latest development we will see an expansion of the Cancer Care Unit in the Spring of 2015. This Cancer Care program continues to see 10% – 20% increases in the number of visits every year and requires additional space to provide this much needed service. Currently St Joseph’s Hospital Foundation, St Joseph’s, the Comox Valley Hospice Society and Island Health, are working to establish four Hospice beds on the St Joseph’s site, in the Views. An architect is finishing the plans and the renovation project will commence shortly with a goal of opening the hospice beds in the Spring of 2015. In determining its future role beyond 2017, St. Joseph’s has established a Task Force in partnership with Island Health to explore options. St Joseph’s wishes to continue its mission in residential and hospice care for the community as part of its future role. One of the objectives of the future role is to enhance the residential care program at The Views in order to accommodate private room occupancy that meet current standards and practices, and to enhance the layout and design for those residents with dementia. Further, other non acute programs and services are being explored that could be offered on the site and meet community need.

WESTJET partners with St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation to help build a healthy community WestJet is proud of the social investment they make in the communities they serve. St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation is excited to announce that WestJet has partnered with us again this year on a community campaign to help create sustainability for our Hospital. From November 1 through to December 16, 2014 every person who signs up to become a monthly donor will be entered for a chance to win a flight for two aboard WestJet to any location they fly. Not only do you win through giving back but you could win a getaway too! For those new to the work of the Foundation, perhaps we may inspire you to join us on our journey. Private donations allow priority medical equipment and patient comfort items to be replaced faster than if government funding alone was relied on. The reality is that increased needs for updated medical equipment make it impossible for government to replace equipment as promptly as needed. A monetary contribution to the Foundation will help us to be able to purchase more equipment and enhance services at our Hospital, benefiting the many residents of the Comox Valley and surrounding area. Monthly donations are a convenient way to spread your donation over the entire year. It lets you budget your generosity – and you receive a single, cumulative tax receipt at year end. You may choose to have funds withdrawn regularly from your bank account or from your credit card. It’s easy, and you may update or cancel the arrangement at any time. Your support could be something as simple as a $10.00 perpetual monthly donation. This donation can provide St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation with a more sustainable funding source, and you with a charitable tax receipt and confidence in local healthcare for you, your family and friends. The Staff Lotto program is a wonderful example of how a group can come together to support their organization. Last year it generated over $38,000. We are ecstatic at these results as it shows the community that our staff truly stand behind our Hospital. Donations can be made in person at the Foundation office at the front entrance to the Hospital, by calling Meghan or Lynn at (250) 890-3046, online by visiting www.cvhospitalfoundation.com or you can sign up to become a monthly donor by completing the form on page 1.

The goal is to have a clearer vision of the future role by the end of 2015 so that the hospital can begin moving forward in that direction. The owner of St Joseph’s, the Diocese of Victoria is fully supportive of this exploration of a new role for St. Joseph’s. “St. Joseph’s is proud to have been of service to the Comox Valley for over 100 years, always growing and developing with the community in its mission to provide Care with Compassion”, expressed Jane Murphy. “We will continue to serve our community in our current role now for the next several years and in our future role beyond 2017. We are excited about how St Joseph’s can play a new role beyond 2017 in meeting the needs of the community in different and innovative ways.”

If you would like to make a donation to St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation, visit the Webpage www.cvhospitalfoundation.com or call the Foundation office at (250) 890-3046. St. Joseph’s General Hospital Foundation is a registered charity which relies on the support of community donors for contributions to help enhance health care.
