Terry Trace celebrated her newly won seat on Colwood council Saturday night with friends and supporters at the Country Rose pub, but there was one face missing from the party. Her mother, who had lived in Colwood for 52 years, passed away in January. “This one’s for you, mom,” said Trace, smiling amidst the jubilant crowd. Trace was one of three non-incumbents to be voted in – the others were 22-year-old university student Lilja Chong and former councillor Jason Nault – and she brings with her a wealth of experience from the administrative front lines of municipal government. A transport truck’s trailer sits high and not so dry on top of the Langford fountain roundabout after the driver miscalculated going around the tight turn late Sunday night. The mishap took out a number of planters, but the rockwork around the fountain remained intact, for the most part. The fountain was shut off Monday morning as crews got ready to repair it.

“ I used to prepare bylaws and policies, and the reports to council. I was personnel manager, I dealt with the lawyers and all the legal policies,” she said. “I’ve got so much experience to offer. I used to train councillors,” she laughed. Retired now for 10 years, Trace said she’s looking forward to getting back in the game from a different perspective. Born and raised in Colwood, she said, “(The city is) very close to my heart. I’m excited and I’m going to take it very seriously.” She talked about contributing further to the beautification of Colwood during the four-year term and expressed enthusiasm for the city’s direction in sustainable development. The mix of incumbents and newcomers should provide a healthy mix of experience and opinions, she said. “We just have to make it work. You have to work as a team on council. If you come in trying to be an independent councillor, it just doesn’t work. And Carol (Hamilton’s) got the ability to get people to work as a team. The City of Langford has an engineering headache on its hands, after the driver of a semi-truck saw her trailer roll directly through the middle of the Goldstream Avenue fountain late Sunday night. The 50-plus-foot semi-trailer ran aground on the fountain at 11:41 p.m. Sunday, after the driver miscalculated her ability to do a complete cycle of the roundabout. “The driver was not from the area and got lost essentially,” said West Shore RCMP Const. Olen Bernardo. The driver, who was not injured, was issued a ticket for driving without consideration. Witnesses indicated the vehicle had been heading west on Goldstream and was attempting to circumnavigate the roundabout. Langford director of engineering Michelle Mahovlich said Monday the fountain’s mechanical operation appeared to be badly damaged. “We’re going to salvage as much as we can … but a lot of the equipment was special order,” she said. City staff began dismantling the fountain this week. Mahovlich said the replacement cost will be “thousands of dollars” and will be paid for through an insurance claim with ICBC. “It’s very disappointing, very devastating, especially knowing how much it took to build it in the first place.” She doubted the fountain, a colourful centrepiece in Goldstream Village during the holiday season, would be repaired by Christmas. The City of Colwood has consistency in leadership to go along with some new blood on council. Mayor Carol Hamilton won in a landslide tonight, while incumbent councillors Cynthia Day, Gordie Logan and Rob Martin will be joined for the next four years by former councillor Jason Nault and newcomers Lilja Chong, a 22-year-old university student, and retiree Terri Trace. “I’m glad we can keep the momentum going,” Hamilton said on her reelection. “We’ve got a real good, solid core already, and new folks that can be integrated really well. Our newcomers will bring diversity. Jason has been on council before and Terri has years

of experience in municipal administration. And we’ve got newcomer Lilja Chong representing the upcoming (generations).” Hamilton attracted 2,368 votes, far more than the 359 cast for mayoral challenger Robin Stanbridge. David Shebib, running in all 13 regional municipalities, received 94 votes. Voter turnout in Colwood was 25 per cent, slightly under the 27 per cent seen in the 2011 election. “I’m just relieved!” said Gordie Logan, laughing, as the poll results were announced. “It’s bittersweet because I’m going to miss the current council that’s been the best council in Colwood history. But I’m looking forward to working with the new council. It will be the busiest and most productive council in Colwood history.” Logan had big smiles and hearty handshakes for unsuccessful candidates Duane MacNeill and Robb Marty, who were also waiting at the

Familiar crew scores victory in Metchosin John Ranns scored an easy win over his opponents in the race for mayor of Metchosin Saturday night. Voters also returned incumbent councillors Bob Gramigna and Moralea Milne to the John Ranns council table, along with former councillor Kyara Kahakauwila and newcomer Andy MacKinnon. Ed Cooper, who told the Gazette several weeks back that he was mainly running to prevent Ranns from being acclaimed to the job, was left in the dust by the mayor, who outpolled the veteran 1,334 votes to 183. David Shebib, who was running in all 13 municipalities, received 39 votes. Gramigna, MacKinnon and Milne each collected more than 1,000 votes. Kahakauwila, who served on council from 1999 to 2008 but lost a bid to get back onto council in 2011, pulled in 828 votes, beating next closest candidate Chris Moehr by 260. Voter turnout for the district was 37 per cent, down from the 48 per cent seen in 2011.

Changing of the the guard in Highlands There’ll be a lot of new faces around the council table in Highlands at the start of the next term. Mayor-elect Ken Williams didn’t surprise anyone by beating out fringe candidate David Shebib for the top job. Ken Williams The multi-term councillor garnered 480 votes to Shebib’s 42. There was almost an equal absence of surprise in the councillor race, as six of the seven candidates were elected. Only 63 votes separated top vote-getter Leslie Anderson and the sixth candidate to get in, Ann Baird. Others making the grade included incumbents Karel Roessingh and Marcie McLean, along with Karen Burns and Gord Baird.

Voters in Langford clearly feel now isn’t the time for change. Stew Young and all six incumbent councillors staked their claim to another four years at the helm of one of the fastestgrowing communities in British Columbia, proving Langford residents are mostly happy with the status quo. Lillian Szpak, Denise Blackwell, Lanny Seaton, Winnie Sifert, Roger Wade and Matt Sahlstrom, were elected Saturday with a resounding margin of victory over the slate of five Time for a Change candidates who campaigned for a change in the operational style of the current council. Young, elected to an eighth mandate as mayor, reiterated that residents appreciate the improvements seen in the city under the guidance of the current council. “I don’t want to ever go back to the way it was when I was growing up in Langford – no opportunities, no jobs and really everybody left,” he said. “I want to make sure this community is looked after and we continue to progressively move forward.” Young defeated lone challenger David Shebib by a vote margin of about seven to one. Shebib, a Saanich resident who was running in all 13 Capital Region municipalities, attracted 556 votes in Langford, the most of any of the municipalities in which he was running.

At one time or another almost every parent scolds a child for reading in poor light. I often suspect the motivation is mostly jealousy. If I can’t read in poor light, why should anyone else? Young healthy eyes have tremendous mechanisms in place to compensate for lack of light. No evidence exists to suggest reading in poor light can do permanent damage to the eyes, however reading in poor light can cause eyestrain. As we age our ability to focus decreases. Extra light helps by increasing contrast and causing our pupils to contract. The smaller pupil increases our depth of focus, thereby making it easier to read. A strong diffuse light is recommended for reading. Natural daylight is excellent as long as it comes from above or behind the reader. Avoid all sources of glare. Many occupations and hobbies require specific lighting arrangements. If you have questions about your lighting needs, ask your family Optometrist, and don’t be surprised if “MORE LIGHT” is prescribed.

Change really is in the air here There was a definite choice by voters in Langford to retain the people who have helped build the city into what it is today. Nonetheless, some interesting points emerged from last Saturday’s municipal election. We believe with more candidates running, including the fivemember Time for a Change slate, more residents were paying attention to the issues and thinking about what they saw for the municipality’s future. The 19 per cent voter turnout, up from 14 per cent in 2011, is still poor and lowest among the five West Shore municipalities, but the improvement must be noted. Does David Shebib really have a pocket of support for his ideals and philosophies nestled deep in the heart of the West Shore? The Saanich resident and operator of the Free Store received 556 votes in Langford alone, more than any of the 13 Capital Region municipalities in which he was running, including Saanich, where he drew 482. Then there’s the non-binding referendum. Langford’s no-beat-around-the-bush question, “Are you in favour of the City of Langford being amalgamated into a larger regional municipality?” went ‘yes,’ by the slim margin of 2,222 to 2,209. If people were truly happy with the way things are, many more would have said ‘no’ to joining up with other municipalities to form a bigger one. Interestingly, of those who voted, nearly 98 per cent of them ticked off the referendum box on the ballot. So change really is coming to Langford, it just might take a while. Change is coming a lot sooner down the road in View Royal and Highlands, where new mayors David Screech and Ken Williams, respectively, prepare to lead their councils and municipalities through the next four years. Ten new councillors, one of whom has council experience, are sprinkled throughout the rest of the West Shore, a fact that could lead to subtle changes in the way things are done. In Saanich and Victoria, Richard Atwell and oneterm councillor Lisa Helps upset the established guard, Frank Leonard and Dean Fortin respectively, in the race for mayor of the region’s two largest municipalities. Their leadership may well affect the relationships their jurisdictions have with those on the West Shore. As someone once said, change is constant. It just takes a different form wherever one happens to be standing. That fact is evident moving around the West Shore, but it’s part of what makes living and working here so interesting and diverse. School tax rates are now set by cabinet order, and the B.C. Liberal government is considering a move to regulate local industrial taxes. (This would presumably be to keep union-influenced municipalities from trying to get too many golden eggs from those liquefied natural gas plants.) Would Education Minister Peter Fassbender and his team continue their remake by amalgamating or eliminating school boards? Not likely. With a rare teacher settlement in place, trustees will have less incentive to grandstand. And their meetings may become something more than union beef sessions. That is why we do it all,” said HFDF executive director Craig Smith. “We provide an escape to focus on things aside from the not so nice things going on in their lives.” The cruise sets sail through the Panama Canal in May of 2015 where the entire family of four hit the high seas and BMO West Shore branch manager Shaun Wysiecki said the funds are going to the right place. “It is absolutely incredible to see we are impacting a local family. Banking is what we do for a living, but we are people first and bankers second,” he said. “Human moments like that are really neat for the individuals that work for us... One crafty fundraiser idea Annual Legion Ladies Auxiliary event helps women’s groups Holiday decorating and fashion ideas of all kinds were featured at the annual Royal Canadian Legion Branch 91 Christmas Craft Sale, Sunday at the Prince Edward branch on Station Avenue in Langford. One of the most popular tables to visit over the years has been that of Langford crafter and baker Lynn St. Laurent.

“I’m well-known for my baking,” she said, as the event was nearly wrapping up. “It just never stopped today. This is such a well-done show, it’s well organized.” St. Laurent has been setting up her vendor’s table inside the Legion for this sale for the past 19 years. That’s five years or so longer than Trudine Wilson and Gail Graham, of the Legion Ladies Auxiliary’s ways and means committee, have been jointly organizing the pre-holiday seasonal event. “It’s been a great turnout,” Wil-

son said. “And the tables are all already booked for next year.” Not only did the 36 vendors have their goods for sale, the Legion Ladies held a silent auction and tea to help raise money for a variety of non-profit agencies in the area. Those included the Goldstream Food Bank, the Women’s Sexual Assault Centre, the Cridge Centre for the Family and Victoria Women’s Transition House. Holiday customs from around the world will be celebrated in earnest when Metchosin’s toastmasters group, the ‘Chosin Chatters, hosts students from international school Pearson College at their second annual “Christmas Around the World” event, Nov. 25. This year’s students will share stories of holiday celebrations from their home countries of Israel, Palestine, the Bahamas

and the Ukraine, and they will all be speaking in English, even though most are new learners to the language. “They’re just brilliant kids,” said Debby Volk, a relative newcomer to the toastmasters group who’s taken in students from Pearson College in the past. “It should be an interesting evening.” “While not everyone celebrates Christmas, the season is certainly a celebratory one in most countries and cultures,” said Alison Harle, ‘Chosin Chatters past president. “One of the most wonderful things about (Pearson) College is the opportunity for our Metchosin and East Sooke communities to share in holiday customs from around the world.” The evening came together last year as a way to connect the community, spread awareness about public speaking and

to help the College’s students grow their skills and feel a sense of belonging. “It was that time of the season. The students’ families aren’t always around,” said current ‘Chosin Chatters president Larry Conarroe. “And just their influence, bringing their culture and different foods and sharing that with us. It was touching for them, to know they’re not alone.” The event runs from 7 to 9 p.m. Nov. 25 at the Metchosin Community House, 4430 Happy Valley Rd. Admission is by donation of a non-perishable food item, or cash for the Goldstream Food Bank. Everyone is welcome to attend. After serving four terms on View Royal council, David Screech is ready to assume the top political job in the municipality. Standing at the head of a table and joined by re-elected councillors John Rogers and Heidi Rast and council newcomer Aaron Weisgerber on Saturday night, the mayorelect was all smiles after receiving the news he would succeed retiring Mayor Graham Hill. “It’s always a stressful time waiting for those results,” Screech said. “It’s a long, long day and it gets longer the closer it gets, so I am just excited. I am extremely honoured the residents of View Royal have placed their trust in me and I will do everything I can to live up to that.” Screech garnered 1,336 votes, giving him a victory margin of more than 600 votes over nearest challenger Brian Burchill. David Shebib was barely a blip, receiving just 45 votes. Rounding out the four councillor seats is incumbent Ron Mattson, who joined Rast and Rogers in putting some space between themselves and the nearest challengers. “I am excited to see the three incumbents back, plus a great new addition in Aaron,” Screech said. “I think it’s always great to see new blood. Aaron’s been involved in the fire hall committee and he’s a good fellow.”

Largest municipalities gained new mayors Big changes in Cap. Region Richard Atwell squeaked out a win over incumbent and six-term Saanich Mayor Frank Leonard Saturday in what most are calling the upset of the night around the region.. Atwell defeated Leonard by just over 1,000 votes, according to the unofficial count. Mayoral candidate David Shebib, who ran on a platform of dissolving the current system of government, received 482 votes, about 1.7 per cent of overall votes for mayor. â€œIt was time for a change,â€? said Atwell from his campaign office at 3789 Quadra St. on election night â€œLast election, (David) Cubberley brought something, but it wasnâ€™t enough. This time, something I did resonated with everyone.â€? Atwell has gained recognition in his advocacy as a prominent critic of the Capital Regional Districtâ€™s sewage treatment project for the past few years. He said his first order of business is to reshape council procedures and open council up to the public for non-agenda items, so people can speak their mind.

Belmont seniors advance Reader Photo to volleyball provincials of the Week

The hallways of Belmont secondary will be slightly less crowded next week, with members of the senior boys and girls volleyball teams competing at their respective B.C. high school championships. The Bulldogs girls punched their ticket to Cranbrook for the AAAA tournament by reaching the final of the Island tournament Saturday at Oak Bay against the host Breakers. The best-of-five match, won 3-1 by Oak Bay, was the latest in the teams’ continuing rivalry, and came after Belmont won their head-to-head preliminary round match two straight games. The Bulldogs rolled through their pool with three straight match wins then downed an improved Stelly’s team 3-1 in the best-of-five semifinals. The Breakers had more left in the tank by the end of Saturday’s play, Belmont head coach Mike Toakley said. “It was a case of Oak Bay taking their game to a higher level against an exhausted group,” he said, noting his team has been short players due to various injuries. One bonus was having Allegra Pala, who has been suffering from back pain, play the entire tournament in the front row for the Bulldogs. Her presence gave Toakley more flexibility in making up the lineup, he said, and allowed him to move right side Nicole Bracewell back to the libero position on defence. Belmont also downed Spectrum and Cowichan in pool play to set up the semifinal match against the Stingers, who placed second in the opposite pool behind Oak Bay. The Breakers went on to beat Claremont 3-0 in the other semifinal. The standout performances of four Belmont players drew the attention of the collection of coaches tasked with picking tournament all-stars. Setter Danielle Potier and power hitter Cassy Allen were named to the first team, while Bracewell and power hitter Jessica Thomsen made the second team. Toakley said reaching the provincials was a major objective for his

squad, which was bumped off the B.C. rankings list last week by Oak Bay. The Breakers took over at No. 10 and was expected to stay there this week. “The goal was just to get there and to have that done, it’s all gravy from here,” the coach said of the B.C championship tournament. “It’s a neat opportunity that I’m glad they’re going to have a chance to experience.” With the extra week of rest leading up to the provincials, the Bulldogs will be up to nine players in Cranbrook, which leaves Toakley more enthusiastic about his team’s chances to do well. Power hitter Kendra Hobenshield has been greenlighted for the provincials after rehabbing from a knee injury. The provincial championships run Nov. 27 to 29 at Mount Baker secondary in Cranbrook.

Bulldog boys win key matches in Nanaimo Despite winding up the Island AAA boys tournament with losses in the semifinal and bronze-medal matches, earlier wins over two Greater Victoria rivals allowed the Bulldogs to qualify for the upcoming B.C. AAA high school boys championships in Langley. The Bulldogs split their pool matches, losing to host Dover Bay and gaining a measure of revenge by beating Reynolds, who knocked the Bulldogs out of contention for the Judy Bourne Cup citywide final four two weeks ago. That placed the Bulldogs into the quarter-finals against Claremont. Belmont won there to assure themselves one of the four Island berths into the provincials. The Bulldogs went on to lose the semifinal to Dover Bay and the thirdfourth game to Vanier from Courtenay. Middle blocker Jakob Purdy of Belmont was selected to the all-star team.
