IT IS THE SOLDIER

It is the Soldier, not the minister Who has given us freedom of religion. It is the Soldier, not the reporter Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the Soldier, not the poet Who has given us freedom of speech. It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer Who has given us freedom to protest. It is the Soldier, not the lawyer Who has given us the right to a fair trial. It is the Soldier, not the politician Who has given us the right to vote. It is the Soldier who salutes the flag, Who serves beneath the flag, And whose coffin is draped by the flag, Who allows the protester to burn the flag. by Charles M. Province

David McIntosh joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in June, 1942 and was posted to a Royal Air Force transport squadron in Britain. Military hospital

The Bignor Park Military Hospital, where Olive Millicent deThoren worked, was an estate home converted to a military hospital during World War I. When she lived in Summerland, de Thoren was called Millicent, but when she moved to England people called her Olive.

Museum adds World War I photos Since last year’s Remembrance Day, the Summerland Museum has received, previously unknown, photographs of two Summerlanders listed on the cenotaph. The only woman listed on the cenotaph is Millicent de Thoren. She was born in 1876 in Cheltenham, England. Her father was Baron Oscar William de Satge de Thoren, a French aristocrat. Millicent’s father was a graduate of Harrow School, like many of Summerland’s early pioneers. Her sister was Nina Garnett, wife of Cecil Frederick Garnett, both residents of Summerland. Baron De Thoren lived in retirement in Lowertown. When World War I began in 1914, Millicent de Thoren was 38 years old. She travelled to England

wounded soldiers, she became ill with “septic poisoning.” She did not recover and died on Oct. 17, 1917. The Summerland Museum also received a photograph of Ralph ‘Rafe’ Osler from the Osler family in Toronto. Osler was the son of Prairie Valley orchardist and Summerland Curling Club founder Frank Osler. The Osler family is one of Canada’s most famous families. Rafe Osler’s uncles included Sir William Osler, world famous medical doctor; Sir Edmund Osler, president of the Dominion Bank (TD Trust); Britton Osler, the prosecuting lawyer for the Louis Riel Trial and Featherston Osler, Supreme Court judge. Ralph Osler was born in Winnipeg on Oct. 17, 1891. His father, Frank Osler, bought orchard land by present-day Morrow Avenue in 1903.

Ralph Osler His uncle, Sir Edmund Osler, also bought an orchard which is now where the Rutherford fruit stand is located. Ralph went to Trinity College, Port Hope in 1908 and

later attended McGill University. While in Montreal he was the private secretary to Sir Thomas Shaughnessy, president of the Canadian Pacific Railway. Ralph returned to Summerland and became the private secretary to J.J. Warren, president of the Kettle River Valley Railway when it was being built in Summerland. He was one of the first in the Okanagan Valley to enlist in the war on Nov. 9. 1914. He was killed at the Battle of Ypres on June 16, 1916. Remembrance banners, depicting soldiers named on the Summerland cenotaph, are on display around the community. This year there are 36 street banners showing soldiers from the cenotaph. Last year, nine soldiers were featured on the banners.
