or hard-working, hard-playing people with moderate towing and hauling requirements, it doesn’t get much better than the new Chevrolet Colorado and close facsimile GMC Canyon pickups. Both return for 2015 (they were phased out after the 2012 model year) in bigger and more powerful forms, but remain smaller and less capable than the full-size Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra. Still, for many pickup fans, they have plenty to offer, whether it’s the four-door extended-cab with a five-foot-two-inch (157-centimetre) box, or the four-door crew cab that comes with a four-foot-two-inch (127-centimetre) or available five-foot-two-inch (157-centimetre) bed. There is no regular-cab model available. Each cab style can be had with a 200-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, or optional 305-horsepower V6. A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 2.5, while a six-speed automatic is optional, but standard with the V6. Interestingly, the V6 comes very close to matching the four-cylinder in the l/100 km department (11.9

t has been a couple years since Chevrolet redesigned the 2013 Malibu following criticism for the car’s lack of rear seat room. For 2014, Chevrolet rolled forward all the changes it had planned for the Malibu’s mid-cycle update, probably two years earlier than planned. Exterior changes included a more aggressive grille and lower fascia, although the Camaro-inspired taillights and rear end remained unchanged. Inside, the Malibu’s stylists appeared to have gone all out to improve on the previous update. A redesigned centre console provided more room and storage, while engineers somehow used black magic to deliver another 3.2 centimetres of rear legroom without altering the exterior dimensions. Standard on all

city and 8.8 highway for the four-cylinder versus 13.0/9.2 for rear-wheel-drive models). It’s also the one to buy when hauling payloads up to 725 kilograms or towing up to 3,175 kilograms (double the 2.5’s capacity). Colorados can be had in base, WT (Work Truck), LT and Z71 4x4 trim levels. The latter is equipped with an off-road suspension package, locking rear differential, all-terrain rubber, automatic transmission and hill-descent control. All Colorados come with a corner-step rear bumper (no need for an external stair to access the bed), a locking tailgate and two-tier loading that, by sliding braces and a platform that you supply, creates two separate cargo areas. There are, of course, a plethora of options and packages for the Colorado, including leather seats (heated in front), eight-inch touch-screen, navigation system, and a factory-installed spray-on bed liner. In terms of safety, a forward collision alert and lane departure warning can be added (a rear-vision camera is standard). For 2016, GM plans to offer a 2.8-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel option.

but the base model is Chevrolet’s MyLink touch-screen audio/communications system with a faceplate that pivots upward to reveal a hidden 15-centimetre-deep storage area. The base engine remains a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that makes 197 horsepower, although it features direct fuel injection and a system that shuts off the engine when the vehicle is at rest, then fires it up when the brake pedal is released. The latter, all by itself, is estimated to help fuel efficiency by five percent. Optional is an updated turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder rated at 259 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. New for 2015 is an OnStar-based mobile internet Wi-Fi hotspot so that all aboard can get online whenever they want.
hile Chevrolet has been winning hearts with the incredibly stylish Impala, its older products have been in need of a little more pizzazz. So the Cruze gets a small facelift for 2015 with a more prominent set of intakes and a slightly revised grille. And, like virtually every other vehicle on the market, LED running lights are standard on the higher trim levels. Mechanically, things remain unchanged. The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine offers more horsepower and torque -151 and 264, respectively -- than either of the gasoline engines, and torque can reach 280 pound-feet for brief bursts of flat-out acceleration. While its zero-to-60-mph time in the mid-eight-second range will be enjoyed by some, everyone will appreciate the 700-plus-mile cruising range, thanks to a headline 5.1 l/100 km highway fuel-economy figure. The diesel only comes one way: with equipment equivalent to a 2LT trim in regular Cruzes. That means niceties like leather seats, heated front seats, a nicer instrument cluster with chrome trim, 17-inch wheels, rear spoiler and more. Most Cruze trims include the
MyLink radio (that streams music via Bluetooth), voice recognition and compatibility with Pandora Internet radio. A seven-inch colour touch-screen stereo with navigation and USB port can be had in virtually every model, while driver convenience packages on most trims include a number of useful options such as power seats, auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rear-vision camera and more. The Cruze’s standard and optional powerplants are diminutive but more than adequate. The base car is equipped with a 1.8-litre fourcylinder that produces 138 horsepower and 123 pound-feet of torque. Move up to the LT and LTZ you’ll get and a smaller -- less is more here, apparently -- 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder that’s also rated at 138 horsepower but with 25 poundfeet more torque. The 1.8 offers a choice of a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic, while the 1.4 turbo is only available with the automatic. All Cruze models include 10 airbags, while the standard stability control includes a rollover-sensing program that will deploy the airbags if it detects the car is about to tip over.

AUTO PREVIEW 2015 Wednesday, October 29, 2014 Penticton Western News
2015 EDGE
T
“
2015 MUSTANG
hink Small” was the advertising catch phrase used to promote the Volkswagen Beetle back in the 1950s. Today, “Think Small Engines” could easily be Ford’s slogan, especially for the 2015 Edge. The next-generation wagon arrives with a 245-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder as the base engine. It can be had with all-wheeldrive and can muscle up to 1,600 kilograms of trailer weight. Also all new is a twinturbocharged 325-horsepower 2.7-litre V6. The engine is standard in the appropriately named Edge Sport and optional with the premium Titanium trim level. The Sport’s previous 305-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 gets the boot. Sandwiched between the two turbo engines is the returning (and now optional) 285-horsepower 3.5-liter V6. All three are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions with paddle-shift controls. A sport setting lets the engine rev to a higher limit in each gear for more spirited driving. Normal and Sport modes are also part of the Edge’s adaptive-steering system. It makes it easier to park in a tight spot while being more responsive during high-speed maneuvering. The optional all-wheel-drive system can direct up to 100 per cent of the torque to either the front or rear axles, as needed. The new engine lineup might be the Edge’s major drawing card, but there are additional obvious and unseen changes to report. A hexagonal-shaped grille softens the Edge’s look. Also, the roofline is more swept and the LED taillights are narrower and extend into the liftgate. The body panels are attached to an equally new platform that originated with the current Ford Fusion and is considerably more resistant to bending and twisting. The passenger space has been designed with more supportive seats, more storage bins and cubbys and a 20-centimetre touch-screen for the audio, infotainment, navigation and climate controls. The most basic of the Edge’s four trim levels has plenty of comfort content. Beyond that, the list of available safety and technology gear seems almost endless. Among the more intriguing is a 180-degree front camera that scans for unseen crosstraffic at intersections. Then there’s active park assist that will guide the Edge into, as well as out of, a parallel-parking spot. Finally, a passenger knee airbag deploys from inside the glove box door.
A
lengthy promotional blitz has finally culminated with the launch of a brand new Mustang. Ford has high global hopes for its latest Ponycar (a term coined specifically for cars in the Mustang’s class) since both left- and right-hand drive versions will be sold in Europe and Asia. That could also explain a certain Euro-styling vibe that the Mustang exudes, especially in the delicate sweep where the roofline meets the rear deck and swoopy tail panel. At the opposite end, the Mustang’s grille and lower air intake are remarkably similar to what you’ll find on the 2014 edition. Also essentially unchanged are both the base 3.7-litre V6 that makes 300 horsepower (down slightly from 305) and the 5.0-litre V8 in the GT with an output of 435 horsepower, up from 420. Slotted between the two is a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder unit that’s rated at 310 horsepower. All three engines will be available in the Mustang coupe and convertible with a cloth top that raises and lowers twice as quickly as before. From a driver’s perspective, the Mustang’s six-speed manual transmission has been reworked for smoother shifts. A six-speed automatic, now with steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters, is optional. For 2015, Ford has finally ditched the Mustang’s stone-age solid rear axle setup and replaced it with a more modern independent rear system (along with a new front suspension) that promises a better ride, improved handling in the corners and added interior and stowage space. The distance between the front and rear axles was also increased and the car now sits a bit lower to the ground. The interior has also been completely retooled with large round gauges and an equally sizable touch-screen that dominates the control panel. Of all the available options to be had on the Mustang, one of the more intriguing is a Track Apps package. It includes a “line lock” feature that holds the front brakes so the driver can, in Ford’s words, “warm up the tires” (i.e. burn up the tread in a cloud of smoke). Also part of Track Apps is Launch Control (that allows for extra-quick jackrabbit starts), an accelerometer that measures lateral g-forces and an acceleration timer.

FORD

he world’s best-selling pickup looks to hold on to its title despite General Motors and Ram charging hard to catch up. It’s the truck category that leads the way these days in technology advancements and Ford’s adoption of aluminum body panels for the F-150 (to be joined by Ford’s Super Duty series for 2016) is one heck of a game changer and in more ways than one. Ford’s switch from steel to more dent- and ding- and rust-averse aluminum body panels will save as much as 315 kilograms (Ford claims) in the process, depending on whether you’re talking about regular-, extended SuperCab or four-door SuperCrew versions. All are perched on a new ladder-type frame that’s also stronger and actually a bit lighter. That reduced heft allows properly kitted-out F-150s to tote and tow bigger payloads, which is what pickup trucks are all about, right? Base trucks now come with a new 3.5-litre V6 with
283 horsepower and 255 pound-feet of torque, while an equally new twin-turbo 2.7-litre V6 that’s rated at 325 horsepower and 375 pound-feet of torque is optional. Carried over from last year are two of Ford’s workhorse powerplants: a 3.5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 producing 365 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque; and a 5.0-litre V8 worth 385 horsepower and 387 pound-feet of torque (up from 360/380). That leaves out last year’s 411-horsepower 6.2-litre V8 that was standard in the way-off-road-capable SVT Raptor (its replacement is expected to arrive by mid-2015). Inside, the cabin, or “office” for many truck owners, has been completely transformed and on up-level models approaches luxury-car standards, particularly the Lariat and King Ranch trims. The FX4 off-road option package (firmer suspension, skid plates and a locking rear axle) can be added to most 4x4 models.

Protecting visibility is essential when driving in hazardous conditions
D
riving defensively is the best way for motorists to avoid accidents and protect themselves and their passengers from the risks of the road. But the importance of defensive driving is magnified when driving in hazardous conditions, especially when drivers’ vision is potentially compromised. Driving when visibility is poor can test the skills of even the most seasoned and careful motorists. Though even novice drivers know to be especially cautious when driving in snow or heavy rain, extreme weather is not the only thing that can make roadways hazardous for motorists and their passengers. Highway construction that produces debris, poorly lit roadways and driving during certain times of the day when everyone seems to be in a rush can all compromise drivers’ vision. As a result, it’s imperative that motorists take steps to protect their vision when driving in hazardous or even potentially hazardous conditions. • Replace old or ineffective wiper blades. Maintaining wiper blades is an easy preventative measure drivers can employ to protect their vision, yet many motorists are unaware of just how fre-
quently their vehicle wiper blades need to be replaced. Wiper blades should be changed every 90-120 days, as the blades can easily grow brittle and ineffective over time. Depending on how frequently they are used, wiper blades can wear out rather quickly, especially on older vehicles with pitting on the windshield. Wiper blades are relatively inexpensive to replace, and can make a world of difference when driving in hazardous conditions. • Don’t forget to maintain your windshield. A windshield can be a motorist’s best friend or his worst enemy when driving in hazardous conditions, but savvy drivers know there is no excuse for the latter. Windshield clarity is especially important when driving in hazardous conditions, and windshields that have been treated with a repellant are significantly safer than those that have not. “Driving in wet weather is inherently dangerous, and driving risks increase considerably with the inability to see clearly through the windshield,” said Dennis Samfilippo, General Manager of Philips Automotive. A one-time treatment just a few times per year keeps

Windshield washer fluid is one of those things drivers typically only notice when it isn’t there. Routinely inspect windshield washers to ensure they’re working properly, and top off windshield washer fluid so you know it will be there when you need it. • Clean interior glass and mirrors. It’s easy to overlook interior glass and mirrors when cleaning a car, but a dirty vehicle interior can be as dangerous as it can be unsightly. While coffee-stained cup holders or spilled snacks under vehicle seats are largely cosmetic concerns, dirty interior glass and mirrors can significantly compromise a driver’s vision. When cleaning the interior of their vehicle, drivers should remove any film that has built up on interior glass and mirrors. Such buildup, which is often thicker in smokers’ vehicles, can reduce vision and create a hazy reflection from the sun, putting drivers and their passengers at risk.
Clean windows and windscreens make for safer driving.

AUTO PREVIEW 2015 Wednesday, October 29, 2014 Penticton Western News
2015 SOUL
F
ew cars are ever considered groundbreaking, but that pretty much sums up the Soul. It’s the kind of vehicle that other automakers would give anything to have in their stable. Funky styling, a frugal price tag and fuel-saving ways have made it a winner. Even those lovable rodents in the Soul’s TV spots are half way to attaining icon status. For 2014, Kia upgraded and slightly enlarged the cabin for more front head and shoulder room and added a bit more rear legroom. In addition the dashboard was revised to accommodate an available 20-centimetre touch screen. The platform was made 29 per cent stiffer and accommodates a suspension that was reengineered for improved ride and handling. Outside, design details inspired by the Soul-based Trax’ster concept provided the basis for a front and rear facelift that makes the Soul much more appealing. The rear liftgate was made six centimetres wider and is now flanked by one of the coolest set of taillights ever installed on any vehicle.
2015 SORENTO
F
ollowing a design freshening, platform stiffing and power upgrading for 2014, the Sorento swaggers forth into 2015 as cool and competent as ever. And why not, since most competing threerow wagons require a lot more coin to seal the deal. The Sorento’s stout sub-frame supports a 191-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder powerplant and an optional 3.3-litre V6 producing 290-horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque. With either engine a six-speed automatic with manual shift controls is the sole cog swapper. The all-wheel-drive sys-
tem (available with either engine) is a full-time unit that constantly varies the torque to all four wheels and can direct power to the outer wheels in high-speed turning situations for added control (known as torque vectoring). Trim levels for 2015 are LX, EX as well as an SX model that includes ventilated soft leather-covered seats, exclusive 19inch wheels (17- and 18-inch rims adorn lesser Sorentos), blind-spot detection, power tailgate and a premium 10-speaker audio system. The third-row seating is optional on the LX V6 and the SX (but not the EX), which also has a V6.
The entry-level LX Soul is equipped with a 1.6-litre four-cylinder that produces 130 horsepower and 118 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 2.0-litre four-cylinder in the EX and SX models delivers the same 164 horses and 151 pound-feet of torque. The 1.6 uses a six-speed manual transmission or an available six-speed automatic, while the 2.0 is only available with the automatic. Base Souls feature air conditioning, but not when the manual transmission is ordered, plus all the usual power amenities. Optional is a panorama-style sunroof and leather seats (heated and ventilated in front), along with a navigation system and premium Infinity-brand sound package. Load up a Soul and you’re looking a close to $30,000 and count an extra 200 bucks for any color other than black or white. Under the heading of Big News, the Soul EV arrives for 2015 with an electric motor rated at 109 horsepower and 210 pound-feet of torque and an EPA-rated range of about 150 kilometres before its lithium-ion-polymer batteries need recharging.
2015 SEDONA
T
he Sedona is part of the minivan pack, but it really hasn’t been considered a major player. Perhaps all that could change for the 2015 model year. The style and proportions are right on the money and it’s devoid of superfluous curves and angles. The interior is as clean and uncluttered as the exterior and it abounds in handy touches. There’s room for up to eight people with the standard second-row bench seat, or seven with the optional secondrow lounge chairs (with retractable leg rests) that can be positioned facing the front or the rear. Either mid-row arrangement slides fore and aft over a
wide range and both the 60:40 split bench or chairs stow against the front seats to maximize cargo space. Mounted within the Sedona’s stiffer platform is a 3.3-litre V6 with 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. It’s pretty decent on fuel with a rating of 12.9 l/100 km in the city and 9.5 on the highway. Expect the seven trim levels to run a very broad range, from practical family transporter to full-on luxury machine, to compete with the Chrysler Town and Countrys of the world. Base equipment in the L includes seven-passenger seating, front and rear air conditioning, keyless remote and the usual power goodies.

AUTO PREVIEW 2015 Wednesday, October 29, 2014 Penticton Western News
Simple ways to extend the life of your vehicle
A
ccording to data from TrueCar.com, in 2012 the average new car cost $30,500. That’s a considerable expense, especially at a time when fuel costs remain high and cost of living continues to rise. Because new cars have become so expensive, more and more vehicle owners are looking for ways to extend the life of their vehicles. The longer a car can stay on the road, the better an investment that vehicle becomes. Fortunately, there are several steps vehicle owners can take that should ensure their vehicles stay on the road for years to come. • Scale back on short trips. The toll cold starts take on a vehicle can add up over time. When a car is started, condensation builds up in the vehicle’s exhaust system. On longer trips, that condensation will gradually evaporate. However, on short trips, that condensation often does not have enough time to evaporate, and over time too many short trips will lead to an accumulation of water in the muffler that can lead to rust and rust holes on the muffler. Short trips also can negatively affect gas mileage. When possible, leave your car at home on trips into town when you can just as easily walk or ride a bicycle. Over time, reducing the amount of short trips you take in your car will greatly reduce wear and tear on your vehicle and
improve your fuel efficiency as well. • Stick to the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule. Adhering to your vehicle’s maintenance schedule serves many purposes, including improving the its durability and protecting various components, including its cooling system and drivetrain. While many manufacturers used to recommend changing a vehicle’s oil every 3,000 miles, many of today’s newer automobiles need their oil changed less frequently. Check your owner’s manual for manufacturer recommendations regarding oil changes, and don’t forget to replace the oil filter when changing your vehicle’s oil. • Pay attention to brake pads. Brake pads that are allowed to wear down can cause damage to the brakes’ rotors and calipers. That damage can prove costly and make things harder on your vehicle. Keep an eye on your vehicle’s brake pads, which are far less expensive to replace than rotors and calipers, and do not allow them to wear down to metal. • Keep your tires properly inflated. Tires that are under-inflated will negatively impact your vehicle’s fuel efficiency. In addition, the tires’ life expectancy is reduced considerably when tires are not properly inflated. Routinely check your tire pressure, especially if you drive a lot, and keep tires inflated at the pressure recommended in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.
• Be mindful when filling up your tank. Many people do not pay much attention to their surroundings when pulling into the filling station. But when you fill up can impact your car’s life expectancy. Perhaps the worst time to fill your tank is when the fuel tanker is in the gas station refilling the underground tanks. That’s because the process of filling the underground tanks can stir up sediment that had settled at the bottom of those tanks. If that sediment finds its way into your vehicle’s gas tank, it can clog filters and fuel injectors and negatively affect the vehicle’s performance. So unless your car is running on empty, avoid refilling its gas tank when the tanker is still in the station.

• Take care of your vehicle’s interior, too. Caring for a car is not just about being good to what’s under the hood. Caring for the car’s interior will not necessarily impact its performance, but a well-kept interior will improve how you look at your vehicle and how much you enjoy driving it. The longer you enjoy driving your vehicle, the longer you are likely to keep it. Preserve the vehicle’s door and window seals; clean the dashboard, including the gauges, vacuum the floor mats; and wipe down the vehicle’s interior, whether it’s cloth or leather. Keeping up the appearance of the car’s interior will make the vehicle more enjoyable to drive and increase its value at resale

The floor shifter has been replaced by a console knob like the one in the Ram 1500 pickup. Under the hood, a new 2.4-litre four-cylinder produces 184 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. he Jeep Cherokee brand returned like a flaming phoenix and proved such a positive boost for everyone involved. Although contentious with some critics, the Cherokee has some seriously modern sculpting going on. All by itself, the pinched and pointy-nose grille says plenty about the risk that Jeep’s designers took to create the Cherokee. Then there are the eyelet headlights that would have been impossible to imagine on any production car, Jeep or otherwise. The interior is also as modern as the outside. In normal operating conditions the rear axle disconnects from the AWD system to cut parasitic power losses, which helps maximize fuel economy and likely saves wear and tear on various drivetrain components. When road conditions are slippery, the rear wheels can receive as much as 60 per cent of the engine’s torque. AWD is also permanently engaged when the driver selects Sport mode. Then throttle and transmission shift responses become sharper and the electronic stability control becomes less nanny-like. Front-wheel-drive is the norm, but buyers can choose from three different four-wheel-drive setups, depending on trim level. Active Drive I, optional in the Sport, North and Limited editions, is a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active Drive II, also available in North and Limited, comes with a two-speed transfer case and is designed for off-road use with either the four- or sixcylinder engines. But for rock crawling and boulder hopping, Active Drive Lock, as the name implies, locks up the rear differential in low range. This system is standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, which is a “Trail Rated” rig outfitted with an off-road suspension (increases ride height by an inch), skid plates, unique alloy wheels with all-terrain rubber, blacked-out trim and a full-size spare tire. All 4x4 systems include Selec-Terrain traction control with five different settings to match the kind of ground you’re covering (snow, sand, mud, etc.).

he all-new Ram 1500 turbocharged 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 helps vault the 2014 Ram 1500 into powertrain leadership. The only light duty diesel pick up in Canada, the silent and clean burning engine is a turbocharged, 60-degree, dual overhead cam (DOHC) 24-valve, V6 that is so powerful it rivals V8 power and capability. Rams get further fuel-reduction assistance with stop-start technology that turns off the engine at rest, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released. Electric power steering cuts parasitic power losses. Optional is an air suspension with load levelling and five height settings, one of which lowers the body at highway speeds by 1.5 centimetres to cut the wind a bit better. Finally, a “thermal management system” is designed to quickly get the Ram’s crankcase oil and other fluids up to operational temperatures, which assists in conserving gas. system and a front-park assist that’ll parallel park the “Beast” into incredibly tight spots. The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 Ram 1500 claims top honours in all categories. An expert panel of judges tested 13 of the most popular half-ton pickups in Canada against each other in a rigorous multi-day challenge of intensive, real world truck evaluations with a focus on capability, fuel consumption and features. The new Ram 1500 not only won the overall challenge, it also took home the titles in both “winner in the Under $45,000 category” as well as “winner in the over $45,000 category.” Working with the class-exclusive 8 speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 delivers exceptional low end torque of 420 lb-ft at only 2,000 rpm. The outcome is outstanding performance, including towing capability up to 4,173 kg (9,200 lb), when properly equipped. Refinements include a 29,000 psi Common Rail Fuel Injection System enhanced with Multi-Jet II Shaping Technology enabling up to 8 fuel injections per combustion event. The EcoDiesel is also capable of running on Biodiesel fuels up to a B-20 blend. Long proven and built by world class manufacturer VM Motori, The EcoDiesel is now in its’ sixth generation of production - and one you can count on for decades of labour. Its safe to say the 2015 Ram EcoDiesel has secured its place among critics not only for its drive and fuel economy but also for its styling, features and many added extras.
2015 GRAND CHEROKEE
O
verall, the legendary Grand Cherokee is one of the best all-around sport utility vehicles going; with engine options ranging from the exciting turbodiesel engine to the stoplight-racer SRT, with standard launch control and eight-speed transmission for fast getaways; to the all new 3.0L EcoDiesel. Love the planet and great fuel economy? The 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine lets you adhere to your principles, while taking you further per tank full, thanks to it best in class driving range. The EcoDiesel engine is extremely efficient and improves power all while leaving little trace of being there. The best in class fuel economy arrives with an estimated 8.4L/100 km highway. Plus, go farther between fill ups with a driving range of up to 1,100km. Although, now well into its fourth generation, the rugged five-passenger Grand Cherokee remains one of the most popular vehicles in its class. To keep it there, Jeep has come up with more than a few mid-life upgrades, both on and below the surface. While Grand Cherokee’s
on- and off-road agility is largely attributable to the various suspension components it shares with the Mercedes-Benz ML-class tall wagon (Chrysler was once part of the German automaker), the Jeep is tuned very differently. The construction of the standard eight-speed automatic transmission provides additional gears with no change in weight, enhances acceleration while reducing fuel consumption and increases torque for added strength to pull. The system’s precise design and shift schedule can implement a gear change in 200 milliseconds, resulting in ride quality that rivals that of the most luxurious sedans. When equipped with a two-speed transfer case, the crawl ratio is improved by 46 percent, enhancing Grand Cherokee’s legendary prowess. The available Sport Mode adjusts your shift schedule and engine power for a more dynamic driving experience. It all adds up to a ride that delivers powerful strength, efficient fuel economy and performance without compromise.

SUBARU
uring its 20-year history, Subaru’s plucky wagon has remained true to its roots, while undergoing continuous improvement. For the 2015 model year, the Legacy-sedan-based Outback receives a number of critical updates. Visually, the car appears similar to the outgoing version, although a revised grille, lightweight aluminum hood, reshaped headlights and doormounted mirrors are evident. The upgrades continue inside, with a quieter cabin with a reshaped dashboard, larger front seats and a more cavernous floor console. The Outback’s suspension has been retuned and Subaru has added Active Torque Vectoring that applies slight brake pressure to the inside front wheel during a turn. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine produces a bit more peak horsepower (175 versus 173) and maintains the same torque rating of 174 pound-feet. The optional 3.6-litre six-cylinder continues to make 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet torque. The four-cylinder can be ordered with six-speed manual transmission, while a continuously variable transmission (CVT) is optional, but standard with the six-cylinder models. The standard all-wheel-drive system has also been tuned for improved slippery-road performance. A new driver-controlled X-Mode adjusts the transmission and engine output plus the AWD system to reduce wheelspin. X-Mode also adds Hill Descent Control (keeps vehicle speed to a crawl), Incline Start Assist (briefly holds the vehicle when starting on hills) and a Hill Holder System that prevents the Outback from rolling backward when stopped, until the accelerator is pressed. When combined with the Outback’s 22-centimere ground clearance, X-Mode makes the Outback more fit for rugged off-road duty.

M
otorists who still adhere to the old standard of changing their vehicles’ oil every 5,000 kms are likely wasting their money. The majority of today’s auto manufacturers now build vehicles that can go twice as long, if not longer, between oil changes. Many automakers now call for oil changes every 12,000 kms, and some go even further, recommending oil changes every 16,000 kms. Some vehicles can even go as long as 24,000 kms before needing an oil change. Vehicle owners should consult their owner’s manuals for advice on how often their vehicles’ oil should be changed. When establishing an oil change schedule for their vehicles, many drivers are hesitant to abandon the conventional 5,000 km interval schedule that was long espoused by the auto industry. But advancements in technology have allowed manufacturers to recommend longer intervals between oil changes, which benefits motorists’ bottom lines and even the environment. When consulting an owner’s manual for recommended oil change intervals, owners should resist the temptation to follow the “severe” schedules listed in many owner’s manuals. Such schedules are rarely applicable under normal circumstances.

Properly maintained headlights vastly improve driver safety
T
inclement weather, outdated or dirty headlights can make it difficult for drivers to see pedestrians and other vehicles. In addition, drivers who struggle to see at night may find their visibility further compromised by older headlights that don’t provide the light they need to navigate their vehicles safely once the sun has gone down. Because headlights can have such a dramatic impact on driver safety, it’s important that motorists take the following steps to maintain their headlamps. • Recognize when bulbs start to dim. As headlight bulbs age, their light output is reduced by the effects of humidity, electrical resistance, filament fatigue, and general usage. The result is dim bulbs that make it difficult for motorists young and old to see when driving at twilight and at night, when a driver’s visual acuity is naturally reduced by 70 percent. Drivers should pay attention to how their headlights are performing, replacing any bulbs that are no longer providing adequate light. • Don’t just replace but upgrade your headlight bulbs. Bulbs that have started to dim need to be replaced, but auto enthusiasts or maintenancesavvy drivers know they can upgrade their bulbs when replacing them. Industry experts recommend replacing headlamp bulbs every two years, and replacing them in pairs to make sure the vehicle’s lighting is equally balanced. But rather than sticking Let our with the bulbs provided by the car Trained and Certified maker, look for a bulb that makes it easier to see at night and during Service Technicians hazardous conditions. Capable of providing up D R U T to 100 percent more light than the A S Plus Tax standard halogen bulbs found on the majority of vehicles today, Upgrade Headlights create a better beam pattern that is dramatically longer than the standard bulbs, vastly improving driver vision and safety. • Buy the bulbs that match your driving habits. Some drivers spend a significant amount of time behind the wheel while others use their Plus Tax cars or trucks only to run errands or make short trips. When replacing Must present this coupon. Valid until Dec. 31, 2014 bulbs that have dimmed, be sure to www.pentictonkia.com choose a bulb that fits your driving habits. Philips even makes a special headlamp for motorcycles 550 Duncan Ave. W., Penticton, BC 250-276-1200 that creates a unique orange refleche importance of maintaining a vehicle cannot be understated. In addition to protecting their financial investments, drivers who properly maintain their vehicles are also protecting themselves and their passengers. Many elements of vehicle maintenance become second nature to drivers once they have a few months of driving under their belts. Oil changes, routine checkups and periodic vehicle inspections can keep cars running smoothly and safely on the road. But few drivers remember to maintain their headlights, a potentially dangerous oversight that can compromise the safety of drivers and their fellow motorists. Old or poorly maintained headlights can be hazardous for a variety of reasons. When coupled with

tion that helps distinguish the motorcycle from other vehicles on the road. Numerous studies have shown that roughly onethird of auto accidents occur at night, when driver visibility is most compromised. So in addition to maintaining their headlights, drivers should take the following steps to improve their visibility. • Keep wiper blades fresh. Wiper blades should be changed every three months, as they can become brittle over time and, depending on their frequency of use, can wear out, especially on older vehicles with pitting on the windshield. When inspecting the wiper blades, remember to inspect your windshield washer as well, making sure that the washers are operating effectively and that the washer fluid basin has been refilled. • Avoid hanging items that compromise visibility. Many drivers like to hang trinkets, fuzzy dice or personal photos from their vehicles’ rearview mirrors. Avoid hanging such items, which can prove distracting and restrict your view of the road. • Clean the interior glass and mirrors. Dirty interior glass and mirrors make it difficult for drivers to see fellow motorists, so make removing any film buildup on such surfaces part of your routine vehicle maintenance.

Winter is coming, now is the time to have your brakes checked
T
he braking system is, without doubt, the most important part of your vehicle. If there is one thing that should never be neglected in car maintenance, it is the brakes. After all, you wouldn’t want to put family members and friends in danger by allowing them to ride in a vehicle with worn out brakes, right? Brakes should be replaced when cali-
pers and pads are worn beyond the limit set by the manufacturer or by the law. Any garage can carry out this simple check, one which could ultimately save your life. Here are a few ways to tell if your brakes have gone past their “use by” date. • Your brake pedal travels further than it used to and feels spongy. • Your brake pedal feels stiff and has
increased resistance. • Your brake pedal does not easily return to its initial position. • Dashboard warning lights come on. • You hear a high pitched squeal when braking. Don’t panic, however, if you hear the squealing noise during braking; it does not necessarily mean that the brakes are finished. It could be caused by an
accumulation of dust on the discs or a lot of moisture on brake parts. Still, the brake system should be checked out and cleaned by a mechanic. Be sure to quickly replace any parts of the braking system that are worn out; the longer you wait, the more expensive a brake job could become. But the biggest reason to keep your brakes well maintained is, of course, to keep yourself and others safe from danger.

t’s rare to find beautiful mainstream vehicles in this highly regulated, ultracompetitive market, but Mazda’s redesigned sedan and hatchback models get the vote. They emulate the mid-size Mazda6 sedan and the CX-5 wagon, which means they no longer wear Cheshire-cat grins affixed to their snouts. Instead, both adopted Mazda’s latest Kodo (Japanese for “Soul of Motion”) design approach that includes an attractive, but less gimmicky grille. The rest of the bodywork is equally tasty from any vantage point. Like its Mazda6 and CX-5 brand mates, the Mazda3 benefits greatly from the SkyActiv suite of structural and powertrain enhancements. That means a stiffer platform and finely tuned suspension and steering components geared to sports-car-like precision. But the real showstoppers are the base and optional powerplants. There’s a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque; the optional 2.5-litre

azda is on a roll with its latest generation of vehicles, although it would love to see even a fraction of the customers buying Escapes from its old partner Ford. The attractively designed five-passenger CX-5’s mechanical bits are promoted under the “Skyactiv” name that made its initial appearance with the 2012 Mazda3. More than simply a marketing slogan, SkyActiv represents a holistic transformation of the powertrain plus various other components that help save fuel in addition to turning Mazda vehicles into better driving machines. From a chassis and suspension perspective, the automaker’s engineers have attempted to infuse the vehicle with as much MX-5 Miata-type sporty behaviour as possible, combined with highly efficient engines and transmissions. The base powerplant consists of a high-compression 2.0-litre four-cylinder that, due to its unique de-

four-cylinder peaks with 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. Both are available with six-speed manual transmissions, while six-speed automatics are optional. Fuel economy is good as you would expect and it’s a bit better even with the optional “i-ELOOP” capacitor that stores electricity generated under braking. The system provides power for the 3’s various electrical components for extended periods while disengaging the alternator, which reduces drag on the engine. The driver is unaware that i-Eloop is operating. Both body styles are also available in GS and GT trim, the latter fitted with enough standard and available comfort and safety content to rival many so-called luxury vehicles. Regardless of your choice, the new Mazda3 is an impressive piece of work that will be appreciated by those who really enjoy driving something sporty, but without the space limitations that traditional sports cars impose.
sign, is able to run on low-grade 87-octane fuel. Output is rated at 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. The much peppier 2.5-litre four-cylinder makes 184 horses and 185 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are available in front- or all-wheel-drive, but the 2.0 is the only engine that can be had with a manual transmission (front-wheeldrive only). For about 25 large, including destination charges, the base GX includes the 2.0 and the usual air conditioning and power-operated items, along with cruise control and push-button start. Head up the line and you’ll find the GS and GT models, both equipped with the 2.5. The top-end GT comes with a nine-speaker Bose-brand audio system, 19-inch wheels, standard all-wheel-drive, dual-zone climate control and leather seats. In terms of safety, optional Active Smart Braking Technology can “see” stopped cars in front and slow you down before a collision.

hopping for an Audi wagon is becoming more like shopping for eggs: same basic shape available in small, medium and large sizes. The small version is the new Q3 wagon, which is based on parent Volkswagen’s Tiguan wagon architecture. Visually, the Q3, as it should, has more in common with the mid-size Q5 and full-size Q7 in Audi’s pecking order. The Q3 has a simple yet neatly balanced appearance with just the right body-to-window-glass ratio and a liftgate that’s angled in a way that avoids the boxy appearance of some of its competitors. The interior is also pure Audi in that it eschews the overwrought styling approach and instead sticks to simple, elegant shapes for the dashboard, centre control stack and floor console. It would have been nice if the rear seat could be made into a completely flat load floor (the seat backs stick up a

W’s seventh-generation hatchback is arriving from the automaker’s new factory in Mexico, to be followed later by a new Golf wagon and electric e-Golf. Size-wise, the 2015 edition has grown by a few centimetres, most of it between the front and rear wheels, while width has increased slightly. The elongated appearance is enhanced by a slight reduction in body height, but interior volume has increased. The front seats are well bolstered and the soft-touch dashboard and angled (toward the driver) control panel have an upscale-ness commonly reserved for more expensive Germany-based brands. The Golf now comes with a 14-centimetre touch-screen infotainment system that responds to swiping and pinch zooming, just like most smart phones. The base version uses a turbocharged 1.8-litre four-cylinder that generates 170 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. It replaces the previous 2.5-litre five-cylinder that also pumped out 170 ponies, but only 177 pound-feet. Optional is

bit when folded) but you still get sufficient room for stowing plenty of bulky stuff. Standard for the Q3, as it is with a number of Audi (and VW) vehicles, is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that makes 200 horsepower and 207 pound-feet of torque. It’s connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel-drive is standard, while Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive is optional. Base “Progressiv” models include dual-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof, heated eight-way power front seats with leather and 10-speaker audio system. The topof-the-line “Technik” level adds a power tailgate, premium 14-speaker Bose-brand sound system and park assist that uses a rearview camera in concert with audible front and rear distance warning. Navigation is optional. Expect to see VW-Audi’s latest 2.0-litre turbodiesel to become optional, likely for the 2016 model year.
the Golf TDI’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel that makes 150 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque, which is a gain of 10 horsepower (but the same torque rating) from the previous TDI. The 1.8 can be ordered with a five-speed manual transmission or optional six-speed automatic, while the TDI shifts with a six-speed manual, or extra-cost six-speed automated manual. Selecting the sporty Golf GTI gets you an improved version of Volkswagen’s turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 210 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. GTI transmission choices mirror those for the TDI: a six-speed manual, or optional six-speed automated manual. Golf for Canada is available in the usual Trendline/Comfortline/Highline trims while the GTI comes in Three-Door/ Three-door Autobahn/Five-door Autobahn models. While “Autobahn” implies maxspeed thrills, these merely add bigger wheels, a sunroof, premium audio, better headlights and a rear-view camera.

rivers rarely think of the tires on their vehicles until they have a flat. But the type of tires on your vehicle can impact its performance. When choosing tires for their vehicles, drivers should consider a host of factors, including the terrain and driving conditions vehicles are likely to encounter. Understanding tires and what makes some a better fit than others for certain vehicles can make for safe driving and improved handling. All-season tires The most common type of tire and arguably the best known is the standard all-season tire. Many vehicles come equipped with these tires, which are designed to be versatile enough to grip the road in various conditions. They are commonly made of a harder rubber that will not wear out quickly and will retain their tread. Most day-to-day driving can be done on all-season tires. High-performance tires People who live in dry climates or drive sports and racing cars can benefit from high-performance tires. These tires are specifically designed to grip the road better and offer superior handling under higher speeds. Because high-performance tires are made of a softer rubber compared to standard tires, they will not last as long as all-season tires. Snow tires People who live in snowy, icy conditions will benefit from the use of snow tires.

These tires are designed with special treads to offer more traction in slippery conditions. The rubber used to manufacture the tire can remain flexible even at extremely low temperatures. Winter tires are best reserved for extreme weather and not used all season long because they will wear out more quickly than others. They may not have the same level of traction on clear roads. In some cases, winter tires may have metal studs included to enhance traction in icy situations. People who do not want to switch tires when cold weather arrives sometimes invest in snow chains that improve traction on standard tires. Mud Tires Muddy areas can be just as slippery as snowy conditions. Mud tires are designed similarly to snow tires but will have extra grooves and a tread pattern that facilitates movement of mud away from the tires and road. Mud tires may be wider than standard tires as well. Truck Tires Drivers of trucks or sport-utility vehicles often need special truck tires. These tires can better handle the weight and size of a larger vehicle. Many drivers stick with the type of tire that originally came with their truck. Drivers who like to go offroading may need an all-terrain tire to offer more traction when climbing hills or traversing different conditions. It can be easy to overlook the importance of tires, but tires help vehicles remain on the road and can affect mileage, maneuverability and safety.

2015 TACOMA

fter a long run of near-absence of competition, the Toyota Tacoma is getting the full court press from General Motors in 2015 with its all-new line of small pickups. Toyota has elected to leave well enough alone for 2015 as a new model arrives in about a year. Under the long hood rests a base 159-horsepower four-cylinder engine. However if towing/hauling is a concern, the Tacoma turns up the wick to the tune of 236 horsepower via the optional 4.0-litre V6. The Tacoma comes in only extended Access-Cab and four-door Double-Cab models -- no regular cab for 2015 -- and your choice of rearor four-wheel-drive for all. The box (available in two lengths) floor and walls in all cases are made of composite plastic that obviously won’t dent or rust. Up-level models also get hose-out heavy-duty all-weather floor-

ing and the radio doubles as the backup-camera monitor. For Canada, the starter Tacoma is a rear-wheel-drive four-cylinder; it’s a pretty basic set of wheels. Upping the stakes to a 4x4 V6 Access-Cab (there is also a fourcylinder 4x4 model) will cost you about 30 grand and comes with bucket seats, air conditioning, a center console and tilt/telescoping steering. To dress up your Tacoma, you’ll need to add the Power Package (available on all models, whether 4x2 or 4x4, or four-cylinder or V6) that adds spangle-y exterior trim, power accessories, sliding rear widow, backup camera and body-colored bumpers. For the off-roaders out there, there are several Toyota Racing Development (TRD) packages as well as a Trail Teams Sport Package with side step bars, a louder exhaust, front skid plate and a roof rack.

espite the fantastic Sienna minivan, there are plenty of Toyota buyers who can’t stand the thought of driving one every day. So, the Highlander is a popular second choice, especially when equipped with available third-row seating; it has lots of room for those who adorn their car windows with stick-people characterizations of their broods. For the 2014 model year, Toyota upped its styling game with more dramatic look that’s far less boxy and boring. The handsome trapezoidal grille and lower air intake will attract buyers who might otherwise not give the Highlander a second glance. The overall size hasn’t changed much from the outgoing wagon, but a nearly eight-centimetre extension in overall length and a bit more width has helped improve interior packaging to the point where rear stowage space behind the third row increased by a claimed 34
per cent. Up front, the styling is equally pleasing as well as practical with an enlarged floor-console bin for swallowing laptop ‘puters, large purses and the like. The new dashboard and control panel are swathed in soft-touch materials and the gauge cluster has also been given a complete updating. Mechanically, the Highlander has the usual 270-horse V6 whether you select front- or all-wheeldrive. A six-speed automatic is the sole transmission. Back again to save the day by saving fuel is the Highlander Hybrid that uses a 3.5-litre V6 working front and rear electric motors to produce a combined 280 horsepower. A continuously variable transmission backs the hybrid. All Highlanders arrive with the expected air conditioning and power-operated controls. The three-place secondrow bench can be swapped for captain’s chairs that reduces passenger seating to seven from eight.

or years the Toyota Camry has been one of the principal leaders in the mid-size sedan segment. However, being on top doesn’t automatically guarantee success with the Honda Accord, Nissan Altima, Ford Fusion and several other mid-size marques chasing your tailpipe. To appeal to new and existing buyers alike, Toyota has sharpened the Camry’s claws in one of the brand’s more dramatic adjustments. The most obvious change is the dramatically different front end where a new spindle-style grille/air intake has been installed. There are new new gauges, a reshaped control panel and recovered seats with better-quality fabrics. One neat feature is an available wireless charging system located in a bin ahead of the shifter that will energize your smart phone or similar electronic device without having to plug it in. Virtually unchanged are the Camry’s three power teams that are proven stalwarts and remain competitive against the rest of the field. The base 2.5-litre four-cylinder is the primary workhorse for the majority of Camrys and provides 178 horsepower
and 170 pound-feet of torque. Meanwhile the 268-horsepower V6 remains optional. The carryover Camry Hybrid drivetrain consists of a 156-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine linked to a 105-kilowatt (141 horsepower) electric motor for a net system output of 200 horsepower and 199 pound-feet. The Hybrid earns a rating of 5.5 l/100 km in the city and 6.0 on the highway; numbers that are attainable only if you keep a light touch on the gas pedal. Both gasoline engines are mated to six-speed automatic transmissions, while the Hybrid employs a continuously variable unit (CVT). Camry drivers are treated to a retuned suspension (sport-tuned for the SE version). The electric-powersteering rack has also been tweaked for greater straight-line stability and a more direct feel while turning. The base Camry LE arrives with most of the expected content, but stepping up to the XSE and XLE will really make a difference with added sport and luxury content. They include a power moonroof, acoustic noise-reducing windshield, push-button start and a premium audio package that’s combined with a navigation system.
