PROUDLY SERVING THE COMMUNITIES OF ROSSLAND, WARFIELD, TRAIL, MONTROSE, FRUITVALE & SALMO
Engaging young voters would boost turnout BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff
It's the Greater Trail young adults who will soon be buying the houses, paying property taxes and maybe one day, taking a run for council. Tax bumps, recycling, and the future of the regional landfill top Billy Bain's list of matters the new Silver City council needs to address. The 22-year old Trail native is ready to exercise his right to vote in the upcoming civic election for a second time – though this is the first time he can vote in a new mayor. “It's important for our age group to vote because houses are being bought and we are becoming a bigger part in the community and taxes will go up,” said Bain. “If you don't vote then you shouldn't complain.” Another local ready to cast his vote for local government is Zach Perehudoff, a 21-year old with sagacity that echoes Bain's. “I think it is important for my age group to vote because young people have just as much right as the older
population to have a say in the direction of the community,” said Perehudoff. Moving the city forward is a main issue, he noted, adding, the pedestrian bridge and proposed riverfront centre are examples of valuable assets that will improve the city for the future. Locally, there isn't a means to record voter demographics, but according to Elections Canada, 38.8 per cent in the 18-24 age group cast a ballot during the 2011 federal election. Three years ago, voter turnout, of all age groups, was only 31 per cent in Trail's civic election. So engaging that age range is key for political candidates, including the city's four mayors-in-running. The question is, how can more young adults be drawn to the polling stations on Nov. 15? Young adults will take more notice when issues that concern them are made a priority, says Doug Jones, one of four Trail mayoral See USE, Page 3
SD20 returning $1.1 million in strike savings to province BY LIZ BEVAN Times Staff
The province wants its money back and School District 20 (SD20) has over $1 million to return After students were back in the classroom on Sept. 22, the Ministry of Education asked for the portion of the annual budget that remained unspent for the days where teachers were still on the picket lines. Natalie Verigin, secretary-treasurer for SD20, says the school board will be paying back 100 per cent of savings during the strike to the provincial government. “(There was) $1,146,000 estimated savings in teacher wages and cost sensitive benefits,” she said of the 13 strike days in September. “(It is) about the same amount of savings as June. There were 13 strike days in September and 12
strike days in June, but in June, we also had to deduct 10 per cent for the remaining days due to the lock-out.” School boards across the province were instructed to return 80 per cent of budget savings from June. Verigin isn't sure when the money will be going back, but she thinks she knows why they want 100 per cent back this time around. “My thoughts are that it is likely related to the Temporary Education Support Program (TESP) that the government promised parents,” she said, referring to the $40 per day of the strike being paid out to parents with kids age 12 and under. Parents who qualified and applied for the TESP will start receiving checks from the province by the end of October.

Guglielmo Di Domenico and Luigi Bedin, the two surviving stonemasons in the area, cut the cake at a dedication ceremony honouring their work as stonemasons over 50 years ago. The gazebo at Gyro Park was full of supporters and family members there to help the Rock Wall Project Entusiastico Society unveil the bronze plaques that are now hanging on rock walls throughout the city, commemorating the hard work the masons put into the project.
Trail’s rock stars saluted BY LIZ BEVAN Times Staff
Building a rock wall in the dead of winter with just a strong back and bare hands would test the mettle of any modern mason. Two of the many stonemasons who did just that were in attendance at the Rock Wall Project Entusiastico Society's bronze plaque dedication ceremony in Gyro Park on Sunday. Both Guglielmo Di Domenico and Luigi Bedin were front row centre for the ceremony honouring the work they did over 50 years ago. Bedin says he had no idea he would one day be honoured for his handiwork while he was building the walls. “It feels really good,” he said after the ceremony. “I would never have thought that it would go to this extent, with the plaques and
everything, while we were working.” One thing Bedin remembers about his time as a stonemason in Trail was working in below freezing temperatures. “It was a lot of hard work,” he said. “They wanted to do (all the stone work) in the winter. In the winter, they would get the grants from the government and they tried to take advantage of that. It wasn't fun at all. It was wet and miserable.” Di Domenico, 97, and said he loved seeing the crowd of around 60 people gathered at Gyro Park to honour his and his brother Carlo's work. “It's nice,” he said. “There are lots of people and it is really nice. I built the rock walls all over the place. See PLAQUES, Page 3

Use social media to reach youth
FROM PAGE 1 candidates. “Young voters have mentioned to me that they don’t trust politicians...they say one thing to get elected and then change once they get elected.” The skateboard park is a great example, he explained. “Most of the original proponents have moved on in their adult life to other ventures, leaving a feeling of disengagement to civic politics.” Ian McLeod, also in the running for Trail mayor, says younger voters need to know that their input counts and will be part of shaping the city’s future, if they become engaged. “To get involved to start, I suggest they step up and help with civic events,” said McLeod. “It’s a great way to start seeing how things are being done.” Roger Catalano, in his second run for Silver City mayor, stepped back further, saying young people should be taught the politics of Canada by Grade 5, and he encourages youth participation in community organizations such as the Kinsmen foundation, or Rotary and Lions clubs. With new technology, reaching out to voters aged 18-24 has evolved beyond dinner table banter or hammering a sign in the ground. These days social media seems to be the most direct way to reach the young masses, whether it be Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or even Youtube. Provincial
Decision makers and dissenters set sights on Site C project price tag
THE CANADIAN PRESS VANCOUVER - With provincial and federal environmental certificates now in hand, BC Hydro faces a much tougher hurdle for its massive Site C hydroelectric project - the bottom line. The Crown agency estimates it will cost $7.9 billion to build the dam on the Peace River, making it the largest provincial public expenditure in the next two decades and the second-largest in the country right now. It would take a decade to build and would be expected to power the province for a century. “Site C is not an ordinary project,” a joint environmental assessment panel said
in its report. The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency report said there is little doubt about BC Hydro’s competence to build and operate the project efficiently, but it fell short of endorsing the Crown agency’s estimates. “The Panel cannot conclude on the likely accuracy of project cost estimates because it does not have the information, time, or resources,” the report said. They recommended that if the project proceeds, it should be referred to the BC Utilities Commission for a detailed examination. But Energy Minister Bill Bennett has been

steadfast. “You have to ask yourself what the BCUC would do if this suddenly landed in their lap? I think probably they would go out and do exactly what BC Hydro has already done and duplicate the already considerable cost that’s been involved in looking at the costs of Site C and make sure they’re accurate,” Bennett said last week. An independent engineering group, an independent construction management group and KPMG have all reviewed the estimates at Hydro’s behest, he said. And there is an 18 per cent contingency built into $3.8 billion for construction costs,

which would cover any overruns, he added. “I believe that BC Hydro has brought a sufficient number and quality of experts into this business of assessing the costs that we have, I think, a reliable number at this time.” Utilities commission or not, someone needs to check the math, said Jordan Bateman, B.C. director of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. “This is such a massive investment, you better make sure that these numbers are solid and that the longterm interests are protected,” he said, adding that members are split right down the middle on the project. BC Hydro estimates the province’s electricity needs will grow 20 to 40 per cent in the next 20 years, and that need cannot be met through conservation alone. Additional capacity is necessary. But the Crown utility’s most recent record is cold comfort for project critics. When a transmission line into the northwest corner of the province was announced in 2009, the original cost estimate was $404 million. The final price tag for Northwest Transmission Line was $736 million. Based on average cost overruns for recent energy projects throughout North
America, the dam could cost up to $10 billion, said Adrian Dix, energy critic for the Opposition New Democrats. The provincial government’s utility bookkeeping should add to concerns, he suggested. Three years ago the provincial auditor general rapped the Liberals for funnelling billions of dollars of Hydro expenses into deferral accounts. By 2015, those deferrals were expected to total $5 billion. BC Hydro has a total debt of almost $17 billion. “The mismanagement of the last 10 years has put hydro in a poor position to undertake a big initiative such as this,” Dix said. Green MLA Andrew Weaver said that while the cost to the environment, agriculture and First Nations are huge concerns, the economics of the project are the major issue. “It does not make sense in today’s economy to spend $10 billion on a legacy dam that we might need one day - maybe a decade, maybe 20 years from now. If we need energy, we can get it so much cheaper, without incurring debt,” said the Nobel-winning climate scientist. Let industry take the risk, he said. Current provincial debt is $62 billion.

Repairs begin on rescued cargo ship THE CANADIAN PRESS PRINCE RUPERT, B.C. - A Russian cargo ship that was adrift off the British Columbia coast after a power outage has docked. The Prince Rupert Port Authority says the Simushir has been towed to the Fairview Container Terminal, and the vessel is expected to stay for 48 hours for repairs. The container ship was en route to Russia from Washington state when it lost power on Thursday night west of the Haida Gwaii archipelago, off B.C.’s north coast. A tug boat arrived Saturday night to tow the disabled ship to port, after a tow line from a Canadian Coast Guard ship snapped three times and set the Simushir adrift again. The vessel was carrying hundreds of tonnes of bunker and diesel fuel, sparking concerns that if it drifts ashore, it could create an environmental disaster. Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea commended rescuers for their quick response but area First Nations say the response wasn’t good enough, especially when oil and gas exports could see a significant rise in tanker traffic off the B.C. coast. Ottawa has made a flurry of announcements about marine safety since Northern Gateway ran into trouble, including improved liability coverage and increased tanker inspections. The Simushir was seen as a test of whether sufficient safety measures are in place. The results were “discouraging,” said Darryl Anderson, a marine transport analyst at Wave Point Consulting in Victoria. “It was encouraging that the coast guard, with the limited resources they have, did take charge,” he said. But “they don’t have the capacity. We haven’t funded the coast guard properly for a number of years - and not just this federal government.” B.C. Environment Minister Mary Polak thanked responders Sunday for managing the situation. “As fortunate as we were on this occasion, this event underlines the need to develop a world-leading marine response system,” Polak said.
Penticton
City prepares to welcome WestJet By Steve Kidd
Penticton Western News
WestJet will be landing it’s first plane in Penticton next Sunday, and the city said the final details of the deal are falling into place. The city announced Friday their intention to enter into a partnership agreement with Tourism Penticton for that group to be the city’s representative in the WestJet deal, which involves a $100,000 marketing agreement with WestJet, and is still not concluded. Under the partnering agreement, the city will supply financial support of up to $375,000.00 for Tourism Penticton’s air service enhancement programs over a threeyear period. “Tourism Penticton will assist the city with its economic
development program and services by developing programs to enhance air services through the Penticton Regional Airport,” said Colleen Pennington, the city’s economic development officer. She said there are three factors that make up the intent of the agreement. Tourism Penticton and economic development have already been working together for some time with both WestJet and Air Canada to try and get eastern flights. Tourism Penticton has already been involved with Air Canada in promotions, and there are opportunities to do more, as well as potential marketing programs to increase the use of the Penticton Airport. “So we bundled all that up
into a three-year partnering agreement,” said Pennington. “Tourism will work to conclude the contract amongst other programs. That will be one thing I hope they accomplish rather quickly, but it does become a tourism responsibility to figure out how to do that.” However, none of that is going to interfere with the first flight from Calgary, which lands at Penticton airport on Oct. 26. Tourism Penticton is working on plans for a landing party right now, according to their general manager, Chris Bower. “We are going to be having a special welcoming ceremony for the first people arriving here in Penticton,” said Bower. He expects dignitaries from both sides to be there, including Mayor Garry Litke.

One last holdup on railway tracks
“
Hands up.” That famous command is attributed to Bill Miner, an American career criminal who is also credited with B.C.’s first train robbery, at Silverdale on the Mission border in 1910. A more genteel, and of course perfectly legal, trackside transfer of wealth is underway in the B.C. legislature. It’s called the Canadian Pacific Railway (Stone and Timber) Settlement Act, and it provides for taxpayers to hand over $19 million to CP Rail to settle a lawsuit over historic logging, rock and gravel rights given to B.C.’s pioneering railway builders. Students of B.C. history will know that while Bill Miner got the headlines, it was the early coal, lumber and railway barons who really made out like bandits. And CP Rail inherited some of this by 1912 when it took over three early railways that
had been granted vast tracts of provincial Crown land. Deputy Premier Rich Coleman revealed the settlement in the legislature this month. It seems that when CP Rail took over the B.C. Southern Railway Company, the Columbia and Kootenay Railway and Navigation Company and the Columbia and Western Railway Company, there were some clerical errors along the way. “I am pleased that Canadian Pacific Railway and the province have recently reached an agreement regarding the disputed ownership and value of timber and stone rights on 145,000 hectares of Crown land and 68,000 hectares of private land in the Kootenay and Okanagan regions,” Coleman told the legislature. “The province granted land to three railway companies between 1892 and 1908 to subsidize railway
TOM

construction. These railway companies reserved timber and stone rights for their own use when they sold the land to third parties in the early 1900s. These reservations were not recognized in many subsequent land transactions, and many of them were not registered in the current land title system.” These discrepancies came to light in the early 2000s. They involve some 1,600 properties, so you can imagine the lawyer fees that would be accumulated to sort
through those in court. And Coleman’s statement suggests that the government has conceded its records are in error, rather than those of the railways. Given the Wild West ways of B.C.’s early settlement and railway development, it’s not surprising there were some loose ends. For a fascinating look at this period, I recommend Barrie Sanford’s book “Steel Rails and Iron Men” (Whitecap Books, 1990). Sanford recounts the fateful decision of the CPR to turn north at Medicine Hat and push Canada’s defining railway through the Kicking Horse Pass, leaving the mineral-rich Kootenay region open to competitors for rail freight service. A key figure of those days is James Dunsmuir, who inherited his family coal fortune and served as B.C. premier from 1900 to 1902. He ended up owning
a large part of Vancouver Island in exchange for building the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway, which he sold to the CPR in 1905, the same year he locked out miners in his coal operations for their push to organize a union. Dunsmuir’s hard line provided a boost for a rival, James Jerome Hill, who built the Great Northern Railway in the 1890s and later quit the CPR board in a bitter feud. Hill was happy to supply coal from Fernie. Dunsmuir took a turn as B.C.’s eighth Lieutenant Governor, sold his coal business and retired to his estate, Hatley Castle, which is now part of Royal Roads University. He is buried at Victoria’s Ross Bay Cemetery. As Halloween approaches, it’s easy to imagine a chuckle from his grave as the railway barons once again rake it in. The Canadian Press If you’re looking for a new show to pick up, critics are loving CW’s “Jane the Virgin.” “Like a sweeter ‘Ugly Betty,’ ‘Jane the Virgin’ is a telenovela, but one with a sense of irony and wit, simultaneously winking at and embracing its own format. It is easily the most charming new TV series of the fall, a highly stylized, bighearted, zippy Technicolor dramedy that is also, uncloyingly, another example of network TV’s growing - at least for the moment - diversity,” writes Slate’s TV critic Willa Paskin. “Like ‘Scandal’ and ‘American Horror Story,’ ‘Jane the Virgin’ is not praying at the altar of typical prestige television, but instead, updating in delightful, provocative, culturally specific ways. It’s not self-serious, but it is serious - about being more entertaining, more emotional, more garish, and more gonzo than so much on television.”

CBS goes streaming
THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - CBS is jumping on the cordcutting bandwagon, launching a stand-alone digital streaming service for $5.99 a month that will offer subscribers access to its current and older shows. The news comes after HBO said it plans to offer a streaming-only service next year. Other monthly streaming services, Hulu and Netflix, currently offer some CBS shows for streaming, but the CBS All Access service offers a more complete catalogue.

Get nasty in war against Islamic Sate
A

air power. The response to claims that the Islamic State can’t be destroyed by air strikes is obvious: it depends on how big your bombs are and how many you drop. Specifically, the British and Americans have available the successor to the Vietnam-era “daisy cutter,” called the Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB). Designed for use against softand medium-surface targets, it would be useful indeed against the Islamic State. True, we risk the objections of Arab states by playing to our own strength, air power, rather than that of the enemy, accepting casualties. But seriously: is any Arab state friendly towards us? Are the Saudis our pals? Do they even respect us? Fowler wants the Saudis to stop funding terrorists and salafist preachers, and for Canada to make it clear that it “will not abide jihadi teaching.” One way of doing that is to suspend the Charter. But why should we reduce our own liberties? To recall the Nazi analogy: it was a terrible mistake not to have bombed the extermination camps and accepted the deaths of innocent Jewish civilians still living there. Why does this logic not apply to the Islamic State? Why not accept unfortunate collateral damage to ensure that anyone so spiritually disordered as to join the Islamic State will, like Nazis, be killed? Sometimes questions do answer themselves. More online shopping this Christmas THE CANADIAN PRESS TORONTO - Canadian consumers have been shopping online more frequently this year and plan to hit the web for more of their gift buying this December, suggests a recent survey. According to an online poll of 1,000 Canadians conducted by Solutions Research Group in August, two thirds of the respondents said they had made an online purchase in the past month, which was up about 10 per cent compared to the results of a similar survey last year. Almost half of the Canadians
who had shopped online in the past month were in the 30 to 49 age range and 40 per cent were from Ontario. When asked what their top online shopping destinations were, Amazon was the most popular response, followed by eBay, Walmart, Indigo, Best Buy, Sears, Old Navy, Future Shop, Costco and Beyond the Rack. About 33 per cent of the Canadians polled said they wouldn’t do any online shopping this holiday season, which was down five percentage points compared to last year.
Around 25 per cent said they would do most of their shopping in retail stores, 29 per cent said it would be a 50-50 split between in-store and online shopping, and 11 per cent said most of their gift purchases would be with e-tailers. The polling industry’s professional body, the Marketing Research and Intelligence Association, says online surveys cannot be assigned a margin of error as they are not a random sample and therefore are not necessarily representative of the whole population.

Mine unlikely to become nuclear waste site By Greg Nesteroff

A semi-retired physicist-engineer from Ontario says an old Salmo-area mine would be a good place to store nuclear waste, but a local politician calls the notion laughable. Dr. Charles Rhodes of Xylene Power Ltd. writes on his company’s website that from a geophysical perspective, “by far the best nuclear waste storage location in Canada is the Jersey

Emerald mine property.” The mine, about 10 km from Salmo, closed in the 1970s after many decades of producing zinc, lead, and tungsten. According to Rhodes, the five million square feet of depleted workings are 200 to 600 meters below ground but still 300 meters above the surrounding water table and the lower portions are in “extremely dense watertight granite.” He called the mine
“likely the most safe and secure facility in North America for nuclear material storage” and expressed frustration the Nuclear Waste Management Organization, which is responsible for Canada’s used nuclear fuel, as well as Ontario Power Generation didn’t inspect it last year when the mineral rights were available. In an interview from his home in Sharon, Ont., Rhodes said he wrote the article nearly two years

Rhodes first brought the Jersey Emerald to the Nuclear Waste Management Organization’s attention in 2010 when it began looking for a site for long-term management of nuclear fuel. An initial list of 21 potential sites in Ontario and Saskatchewan has since been narrowed to 14. However, Rhodes believes they are all unsuitable. Michael Krizanc with the Nuclear Waste Management Organization said the search for a site was community-driven. “While the expressions of interest phase was open, communities had to invite themselves into the process,” he said. “Without an invitation from the community, we did not investigate the area.” He said the Jersey Emerald site would

likely have been ruled out based on a number of criteria, including the potential for the mine to someday reopen. Old mines are generally not considered good candidates for such a repository because of fissures in the rock caused by blasting, he added. Regional director Hans Cunningham, in whose area the mine falls, only learned of the article this week, and said his initial reaction was amusement. “I was in Winnipeg when Atomic Energy of Canada took us up their disposal site, which is about a mile underground. They said the water there hadn’t seen daylight in 300,000 years. “Compare that to the [Jersey Emerald] which is not a mile down. You’ve got an area in an earthquake zone, that has running water in it. It just doesn’t make sense. It’s a wonderful rumor, but it’s really worth laughing at.”

Smoke Eaters sink Rivermen in OT Hawks close gap on Leafs KIJHL
BY JIM BAIILEY
Times Sports Editor
Penticton native Kienan Scott picked a great time to net his first goal as a Trail Smoke Eater, scoring two-minutes and 44 seconds into overtime to give the home team a 3-2 victory over the Langley Rivermen on Saturday at the Cominco Arena. With the score tied 2-2 midway through the first overtime period, Scott Davidson poked the puck away from a Langley forward, and then a defender, sprinting up ice, and driving to the net, only to be stymied by Rivermen goalie Darren Martin, who then made another pad save on Bryan Basilico on the rebound. But the puck popped out of the pileup to Scott at the side of the net, and the 18-year-old forward backhanded it over a sprawling Martin to give the Smokies their sixth win of the season. “I came off the bench, and I saw Scotty (Davidson) made a good play to get the puck to the net and it was just a mad scramble,” said Scott. “I think I got two or three whacks at it and the last one I just barely got it in on my backhand.” The Smokies were without injured forwards Dallas Calvin and Robbie Johnson, moving defencemen Sheldon Hubbard and Dexter McLeod to the forward position on a line with Connor Brown-Maloski. As a unit, the Smoke Eaters looked nervous in front of their home crowd, at times trying to do too much, and failing to finish a number of creative plays. However, they scored when it counted and, while not the prettiest goals, the team found a way to win. “The result? Well we get two points, but at the end of the day we know as a group that’s not our best effort,” said Trail coach Nick Deschenes. “We’re better than that and we have to play better at home, we’re just a little bit of a mental block, we’re doing too many things and complicating our game.” Adam Todd was named the game’s first star after a brilliant performance in net for the Smoke Eaters. The Courtenay native made several key saves, blocking 36 shots on the night including four big stops in OT, and surpassing his win total of last year with his fifth victory. “Adam was amazing tonight,” said Scott. “He kept us in it.” The Rivermen opened the scoring when Gage Torrel pounced on a rebound and beat Todd at 6:43 of the first period. But the Smokies special teams weathering a five-minute major midway through the first period, after defenceman Jake Zeleznikar was hit and went down awkwardly into the boards. He remained down on the ice for nearly 30 minutes, until paramedics transferred him to a nearby hospital, where it was determined he had a broken femur, and will miss the remainder of the season. Trail would tie it with the lone goal in

We change the lines a lot so everybody’s learning to work well together.” Harlan Orr would give Trail the lead 2:08 into the third period on the power play. Jake Lucchini sent Zuccarini streak-

ing down the left side, his shot pingponged off the goalie then the defenceman to Orr who swatted the puck into the open net. However, the Rivermen would tie it 37 seconds later, after Todd denied Torrel with a nice pad save, Dante Hahn would bang in the rebound. But Todd shut the door after that, making several big saves including one in the dying minutes when he robbed UMass-Lowell commit Evan Anderson who took a cross-ice pass and fired it at the yawning cage, but Todd slid over and made a spectacular save to preserve the tie and bring it to OT. “We didn’t really play that well, but we came away with two points and that’s what really matters,” said Zuccarini. “We have a good group of guys, everybody gets along, a lot of talent, and we can win a lot of games.” The Rivermen outshot Trail 38-27, and went 0-for-3 on the power play while the Smokies were 1-for-5. Scott received second star honours, while Zuccarini was named third star, and Jake Lucchini the Fortis Energy Player of the Game. BY TIMES STAFF The Beaver Valley Nitehawks netted 5-of-6 points on their three-game road swing through the North Okanagan on the weekend, closing the gap on the Murdoch division leading Nelson Leafs. The Nitehawks beat Chase Heat Friday 3-2, before falling to the Sicamous Eagles 3-2 in overtime Saturday, and rebounded with a 4-3 OT victory over the Revelstoke Grizzlies Sunday. Jacob Boyczuk scored at 3:53 of the second overtime to give B.V. the win against the Grizzlies. The Trail native netted his second goal of the game on a setup from Brayden Horcoff and Lyle Frank to lift the Hawks to its seventh win in 15 games this season. The Hawks’ veteran started the scoring at 11:39 of the JACOB BOYCZUK first period, scoring on the power play after Revelstoke’s Kieran Brunetti was sent off for head contact. Mitch Foyle would put the Hawks up 2-0 completing a nice play by Jack Vergouwen and Reid Anderson, to net his ninth goal and 18th point of the season, as B.V. outshot Revelstoke 21-4 in the period. However, the Grizzlies would roar back in the second on goals from Louie Federico and Jeff Bochon, then take the lead 40 seconds into the third period when Josh Pilon beat goalie Drake Poirier to go up 3-2. But the Nitehawks would tie it on the power play at 8:49 when Taylor Stafford converted a Tyler Hartman pass. The Nitehawks outshot the Grizzlies 53-28, going 2-for-5 on the power play while the Grizzlies went 0-for-3. Boyczuk was named player of the game for the Hawks. In Saturday’s match Fruitvale’s Sam Swanson would tie it with under three minutes to play, but Eagle forward Ben Campbell would beat Carson Schamerhorn at 3:48 of the first overtime period to give the Eagles a 3-2 win. Reid Anderson netted the other Hawks goal, as B.V. outshot the home team 31-24, with Schamerhorn taking player of the game honours. In Friday’s win over Chase, Spencer McLean scored the eventual winner at 6:37 of the third period to give the Hawks a 3-1 lead. It was McLean’s second goal and seventh point of the season, as the Montrose native was named player of the game. Taylor Stafford and Tyler Hartman each had a goal and an assist for B.V. while Poirier got the win, stopping 25 shots on the night. Beaver Valley gained ground on the firstplace Nelson Leafs who fell to the 100 Mile House Wranglers 7-4 on Friday, before beating Revelstoke 9-3 and Sicamous 3-2. The 7-4-1-3 Nitehawks sit three points back of the Leafs who lead the division with 21 points. B.V.’s next home games go at 7:30 p.m. Friday against the Golden Rockets and on Saturday versus Creston Valley.

Sports Manning breaks Favre’s TD record
Associated press This was one ball Peyton Manning wanted in his grasp. Comically, his teammates initially wouldn’t give it to him. And then he agreed to give it away, anyhow. Manning’s receivers played keep-away with his milestone memento, and the NFL’s new leader in career touchdown passes toyed with the San Francisco 49ers in the Denver Broncos’ 42-17 romp Sunday night. Manning went into the showdown two TDs shy of Brett Favre’s record of 508 and threw four touchdown passes, giving him 510. He surpassed Favre’s mark with an 8-yard strike to Demaryius Thomas late in the second quarter. As he went to
retrieve the football, his teammates decided to have some fun. Manning’s favourite receivers, Thomas, Emmanuel Sanders, Julius Thomas and Wes Welker played keep away as Manning lunged for the historic football. “I heard whispers about something,” Manning said. “Those guys are all great athletes, and my vertical leap isn’t what it used to be. “I haven’t played keep-away since I was 8 years old. That is something I will always remember.” Finally, Manning got the ball along with congratulations from his teammates and coaches. The souvenir won’t end up on Manning’s mantle, however — it’s headed to the Pro Football
Hall of Fame. Manning needed just four drives Sunday night to break the record. He threw a 3-yard TD pass to Sanders on Denver’s first drive and tied the record when Welker took a pass over the middle for 39 yards. His final TD of the night was a 40-yarder to Thomas, giving him 510. Manning reached the milestone in his 246th regular-season game. Favre needed 302. “I think Brett has always known he is one of my favourite players,” Manning said. “He played the position with so much passion, so much toughness and great production as a quarterback. “I am honoured to join this club with him.”

SATURDAY EVENING
THE CANADIAN PRESS Five seasons in, “The Walking Dead” marches on triumphantly more popular than ever. The post-apocalyptic zombie series set a new ratings record with its recent season premiere by attracting more than 17 million U.S. viewers. Time magazine explored why the dark, endlessly harrowing show is gathering more and more viewers as time goes on. “Extreme is the new mainstream,” the magazine concluded. “It’s grim - unrelentingly, punishingly (which is not to say unentertainingly) grim. It kills beloved characters; it kills children; it gives very little reason to hope that, in the long run, any human will end up anything but a walker or meat for walkers,” wrote TV critic James Poniewozik, who calls the show a type of disaster escapism. “Look, I resist over-psychoanalyzing the American public on the basis of one hit TV show or two. I don’t think that ‘the zeitgeist’ anticipated years ago that, say, there would be an ebola outbreak in 2014 and prepared ‘The Walking Dead’ to resonate with it. But: if there is no such thing as a time without bad news, there’s a specific cast to the bad news of today.”

TV LISTINGS Box office
‘Fury’ blasts competition THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - The bloody World War II drama “Fury” blew past “Gone Girl” at theatres this weekend. “Gone Girl” was tops at the box office for two weeks before Brad Pitt and his rag-tag group of tank mates in “Fury” blasted the film to second place. Sony’s “Fury” captured $23.5 million in ticket sales during its opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. Fox’s “Gone Girl” followed with $17.8 million. The week’s top two films are R-rated adult dramas, followed by two PG family films. “The fall movie season is all about making the transition from PG-13 world of summer to the R-rated, edgier world of the fall and awards season,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak. The animated Fox feature “The Book of Life” opened in third place with $17 million, followed by Disney’s “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” with $12 million. “We’re now in full adult movie-going season and we’ll see a lot more adult-skewing fare,” said Fox distribution chief Chris Aronson, who added that the colorful “Book of Life” suits any audience. Another new film rounds out the top five: Relativity’s Nicholas Sparks romance “The Best of Me,” starring Michelle Monaghan and James Marsden, debuted with $10.2 million. “Birdman,” the Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu drama starring Michael Keaton, opened in just four theatres and boasted a per-screen average of $103, 750. It opens in additional locations next week. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theatres, according to Rentrak. Where available, the latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. 1. “Fury,” $23.5 million. 2. “Gone Girl,” $17.8 million ($20.2 million international). 3. “The Book of Life,” $17 million ($8.6 million international). 4. “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” $12 million ($1.3 million international). 5. “The Best of Me,” $10.2 million ($1.1 million international). 6. “Dracula Untold,” $9.9 million ($22.5 million international). her that because most of Mom’s money went into the house, she will get paid when the house is sold. (It’s on the market.) Am I obligated to give my sister $21,000 when $15,000 of this money was a gift to us to fix the house? Her husband has stopped speaking to us and has badmouthed us to family and friends. I don’t know what to do, but it doesn’t seem fair to give her more than we end up with. -- We Took Care of Mom Dear Took Care: What are the terms of the will? You cannot change them simply because they may be unfair. If the will says
ness, so she wouldn’t try this. On our last cruise, the seas were very rough. At breakfast, she was sick as a dog and had to go back to bed. I, with my duct tape over my navel, was perfectly fine. The problem is, nobody believes me. They think I’m playing a joke on them. Would it be possible for you to find out? It could help a lot of people enjoy the water. -- J. Dear J.: We cannot verify whether this home remedy works, although a quick Internet search turned up a great many people who think it does. It doesn’t seem to be harmful, so if it works for you, great. (We’re sure our readers have plenty of other suggestions.) Dear Annie: This is for “Wondering,” who cheated on his wife and now she asks questions that he finds “annoying.” Let me fill him in a little on the other side.
I was in your wife’s shoes, and I forgave my husband but wanted some questions answered. His refusal to do so was the only major issue we fought about. I can no longer get the answers because he died suddenly a few years ago. And it’s the
one thing that still sits in the back of my mind and mars my memories of him. So, “Wondering,” please find a way to answer your wife’s questions so the cheating can truly recede into the background. You never know when
it will be too late. -Been There Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. Please email your questions to anniesmailbox@comcast.net

your sister gets half of everything, that’s what she gets. If it is unclear, consult the attorney who drew it up. And please decide whether the money is more important than your relationship with your sister, because that is what it boils down to. You sound like a caring and kind daughter, but you have illustrated why it is so important to put these arrangements in writing. Dear Annie: Years ago, I read about a cure for seasickness. It said to put an aspirin in your belly button and Scotch tape over it. Some said the cure worked even without the aspirin. I’ve tried it both ways and haven’t been seasick in 20 years. I even started using duct tape because when I sweat, the Scotch tape comes off. It works great. Before this, I had tried pills, bracelets and a patch, and nothing worked. YourByhoroscope Francis Drake For Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2014 ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Today is a mixed bag. Someone close to you will surprise you; this could be pleasant or not. Nevertheless, by evening, you’re laughing with others. Go figure. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your work routine will be interrupted today, perhaps because of computer crashes, power outages, fire drills, canceled meetings or staff shortages. But late in the day, you won’t mind any of this. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Surprise flirtations will catch you off guard today. But they probably will please you! Meanwhile, parents should be vigilant because this is an accident-prone day for kids. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Your home routine will be interrupted today. Small appliances might break down, minor breakages could occur

or unexpected company is at your door. This evening, throw a party! LEO (July 23 to Aug. 22) This is an accident-prone day for you, so pay attention to everything you say and do. Late in the day, you are happy to schmooze with others or perhaps tackle a writing project. VIRGO (Aug. 23 to Sept. 22) Keep an eye on your money today because things are unpredictable. Guard your possessions against loss or theft. By evening, you see a way to boost your income. LIBRA (Sept. 23 to Oct. 22) You feel impulsive and spontaneous today. Nevertheless, be careful. Enjoy schmoozing with friends this evening or perhaps traveling somewhere. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) This is a restless day for you. You have that feeling like you’re waiting for the
other shoe to drop. Relax, because by evening, all is well and you are laughing. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Friends might surprise you today, or perhaps you will meet a real character. (Could be either one or both.) Enjoy friendly relations with groups this evening. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) You might be surprised that private information
about you is made rather public today. (Yikes!) By evening, there is a new spin on things; now you’re happy. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Travel plans might be canceled, delayed or rescheduled today. Ditto for legal matters and publishing. However, by evening, everything will flow smoothly. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20) Check your bank account
and credit cards to make sure things are working today, because something untoward might happen. This evening, someone might give you a gift. Ka-ching! YOU BORN TODAY People are entranced by you. You are magnetic and passionate, although you sometimes hide this under a cool demeanor. Making Music
Liz Bevan Photo
The first performance from the Charles Bailey Theatre's Teck Childrens' Series saw SAM2, or Scrap Arts Music, putting on an acoustic and innovative show. With instruments made out of recycled and found items, the group played plenty of rhythmic and unique sounds and even invited some kids from the audience up to the stage to create their own music. The xylophone, made from planks of wood, was front and centre with kids creating their own rhythms and sounds for the audience.
