The fall legislative session started last Monday with a throne speech largely leaning on liquified natural gas (LNG) — leaving Alberni-Pacific Rim MLA Scott Fraser less than impressed. “It was an 18-minute throne speech,” said Fraser. “Underwhelming would be an understatement.” The speech described B.C. following the same path to Asia for LNG as it did in expanding lumber trade when the U.S. housing market declined. “Like forestry, B.C.’s natural gas industry has relied on exports to the United States,” said the speech, read by Lt. Governor Judith Guichon. “But the American shale gas revolution has meant the export south has dried up — and is never coming back.” The gas industry employs 1,700 people in the Fort Nelson area alone, and can be maintained only by reaching Asian markets. The speech notes that Chinese LNG consumption rose by a fifth in the first half of 2014. “This is a chance — not a windfall,” the government notes, after one of the leading investment groups warned of shifting conditions that could delay its participation. Fraser said he was “disappointed” the government expressed “repeated talk of LNG” but lacked focus on local issues. “In my constituency we have issues around agriculture, logging and the government’s response to communities for issues like the seaweed harvest (in Deep Bay/Bowser)… we’re losing our forests… it’s like (the Liberal government) has abandoned these industries,” he said. “And it’s all for this one LNG commodity — it is a commodity — it’s part of our economy now but it’s one commodity.” Fraser added LNG is subject to the international market, over which he believes the government has no control. “It’s dangerous to put all your eggs in one basket,” he said. But Parksville Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell stands by her government. “There was no doubt the focus of our session was on LNG,” Stilwell told The NEWS from Victoria. “We need a comprehensive, legislative framework to get out so we can create confidence for our investors who are backing the government in exporting LNG to Asia.”

Stilwell said LNG was “not the only focus” of the throne speech, noting the government also touched on mining, forestry, agrifood and how the B.C. jobs plan is helping to grow the economy. She called LNG “a priority” because it’s “our way of paying for services for everybody in B.C. such as health care and social services.” “We need to find ways to grow our economy,” she said. “That’s what our government is focused on — growth, not the status quo and not the risk of decline.” Meanwhile, Fraser continued to criticize the government for their slow progress on increasing palliative beds in Parksville Qualicum Beach, a region notorious for having the oldest population in Canada. There is one bed for the area from Nanoose Bay to Deep Bay. Island Health announced in August their “updated priorities” includes doubling the number of hospice beds to 64 beds by 2020 and vowed the Oceanside area will receive at least five more beds, which Stilwell said she would try to get by 2016. Fraser called the update a “cop out.” “This is a government that has a health authority that says ‘excellent care for everyone, everywhere, every time,’” said Fraser. “The people of Oceanside have been waiting for decades for quality end of life care and for the government to say sometime in the future they’ll open some beds is a non announcement.” Fraser said local facilities like Arrowsmith Lodge and Cokely Manor are ready for beds right now. “If (the government) was serious about providing serious care they’d agree to use the local facilities already in the region,” he said. “Nobody can put off their own death.” Fraser called it “absurd” to only have one bed in a region known for its senior population. But Stilwell said “change takes time.” “The current beds we allotted were in our mandate during the election to double the amount of palliative beds,” she said. “Our concern is to provide proper support.” — with files from Tom Fletcher

Lease agreement means more programming in downtown QB The SOS is one step closer to offering its program and services out of the old Qualicum Beach Elementary School site. Last Thursday, Society of Organized Services Executive Director Renate Sutherland was at the site where she formerly signed the lease and handed over a cheque to School District 69 Superintendent Rollie Koop. “We are really excited to be able

to provide programming and services here in Qualicum Beach,” said Sutherland. “Our goal is to ensure that seniors and others in the community have access to needed programs and services despite not having access to a vehicle or having difficulty with the bus system.” Koop added that the new agreement at the school is a positive thing for the area. “The Qualicum School District is

pleased to have been able to enter into this lease agreement with the SOS,” he said. “This commitment will allow the parties to ensure that the former QBES site continues to be a vibrant and contributing community asset.” Over the coming months the SOS will be working out the details surrounding its occupancy at the new location. — Submitted by the SOS

A couple of events in the Parksville Qualicum Beach area will help mark Homelessness Action Week in B.C. (Oct. 12-18). “We have two events planned, the sleep outside challenge will help raise awareness,” said Oceanside Task Force On Homelessness coordinator Sarah Poole, “and on Thursday we’ll have the Project Connect Health Fair.” The fair is meant as direct action to help people in need, while the sleep outside challenge is meant to address the bigger picture and help raise awareness, giving participants a more personal understanding of the conditions that some locals face every night. A second count in May 2013 found 67 people in the area who identified as being homeless or at-risk of homelessness, including 40 per cent over the age of 45 and 75 per cent with a physical or mental health disability. Affordable housing was identified as the largest need by 73 per cent. The Salvation Army Food Bank also has an average of 400 clients a month. Poole said that homelessness can take a number of forms from couch surfing to living out of a car to sleeping rough, or outdoors, which leaves people highly susceptible to health issues.

Participants in the sleep outside in the cold challenge (who are already registered) can only bring what they can fit in a backpack or garbage bag including a sleeping bag and mat, but they cannot use tents. Breakfast will be provided at the Courtyard Cafe the next morning. The health fair the next day will bring about 20 service providers together at the Qualicum Beach Civic Centre from 1-4 p.m., Oct. 16. Poole said there will be everyone from dental hygienists and optometrists to photographers and hair dressers offering services and information. “The fair is targeted to the homeless, but anybody is welcome,” Poole said. “The main goal of the week is to help people recognize homelessness does exist in this area.” A joint local project is aiming to help people access and maintain housing in the area. The Oceanside Task Force on Homelessness is supporting the Island Crisis Care Society’s fundraiser to help local people access and maintain housing. The Inuit had been managing for thousands of years with much fewer resources than were aboard the HMS Terror and the HMS Erebus. But then the Inuit respected their environment and adapted to it. They ate raw seal and whale blubber; they wore furs and skins for warmth. The corpses of the Franklin crew were found wearing British naval gear complete with brass buttons and knee breeches. They showed signs of lead poisoning from the soldered tins of British food they relied on. So valiant Sir John Franklin persevered in the time-honoured, glorious tradition and managed to lose two ships and the lives of 129 men while faint-hearted, pusillanimous Sir Thomas Pert made it back to harbour with his ships and his crews intact. Council turnover

ll the races for seats on councils and boards this fall have their flair and interesting side stories. In this space today we focus on the contests for mayor and councillor for the City of Parksville because it may be the most intriguing of all, and not only because it is this region’s largest municipality and only city. The school board races aside (that’s another story for a future edition), there are familiar faces trying to retain their seats. In the four areas we cover in the regional district, three incumbents are running. In Qualicum Beach, the mayor and three of four current councillors have filed their papers. We expected Coun. Scott Tanner was also going to run, but he had not filed his papers by time of this writing (Thursday afternoon). Tanner is battling some health issues and regardless of what he decides about his candidacy, we wish him a full and speedy recovery. The races for mayor and council in Parksville are an entirely different kettle of fish. Only two incumbents, Al Greir and Sue Powell, are seeking a seat, which means there will be at least four new members of council. There will be a new mayor too, after the popular, sharp and talented Chris Burger decided not to run for family and business reasons. ‘New’ might not be the most accurate word to describe who is going to fill these Parksville seats. In the mayor’s race (again, as of Thursday afternoon — check Candace Wu’s story on page A3 for the complete list of candidates for all the races), all four people who have filed their papers have appeared on ballots and/or served on council in Parksville previously. Two, Marc Lefebvre and Bill Neufeld, are current councillors, while Antonio Farinha and Dallas Collis have sought public office here in the past. As far as the council race goes, a former mayor, Paul Reitsma, is in the mix, as are former councillors Teresa Patterson and Caroline Waters. Voters will have to decide whether experience, at some level, is important, or if this council needs fresh faces. While it may be tempting to suggest municipal government experience will be important as Parksville faces some tough issues like the new water system, it can be argued rather successfully that a newcomer with a reasonable amount of intelligence can get up to speed quickly with the help of city staff. — Editorial by John Harding

Letters HURLING TAXES As a curler, member and volunteer for the Parksville Curling Club, I continue to struggle to understand why Parksville city council continues with this permissive taxation exemption policy. It is my understanding that the expectation was for many more tax dollars to come into the city coffers, but ‘at what expense? ‘was obviously not taken into consideration. There are now very few of these designated organizations who are required to pay taxes like the PV Curling Club. What is so different between curling, lawn bowling, hockey or for that matter any other non-profit organization that provides a service to the community. Parksville Curling Club is a registered non-profit organization with 1.5 paid positions and many hard-working volunteers. We were approached by the RDN in 2002 about leasing the arena for curling which helped the referendum to be passed for the new Oceanside Place. During these past years, there was no indication of property taxes being assessed and we have operated the facility at no cost to the taxpayers. However, if we find that we cannot meet the rising cost of the taxation from Parksville and have to close our doors, we are told it would cost over $700,000 to demolish, and who will pay that bill? We were told by council to raise our fees to cover the taxes, we have done that to keep ahead of rising costs for hydro, gas, water, sewer and ongoing maintenance. Parksville Curling Club has hosted more than five provincial events over the past few years and many more bonspiels bringing curlers, officials and family members to the community for up to a week at a time often during the off season, providing an economic boost. Once again, this December we are

hosting the junior provincial competition which will be shown on Sportsnet, another boost for the city. I read recently of the good financial position that the City of Parksville is enjoying at the present time and wonder then why they need to create such a hardship for the Parksville Curling Club when we are working so hard to keep afloat and to provide a healthy exercise and recreational enjoyment for all. QB ELECTRONS Nostalgia is reigning in Qualicum Beach and recent letter writer Marlys Diamond is the queen. Thank you for pointing out our great successes. I have lived some history in QB and if I had to say in two words why those successes are lovingly remembered, they would be “people-oriented.” Not only was the goal of these enterprises “will the community love it and take part in it?” but they also raised the money, volunteered labour and skills to achieve them. All of these numerous projects are community oriented: community centre, Communities in Bloom, community gardens. We keep using the names for a reason. So, expansion and progress are loaded words: expansion for community benefit, or expansion for the few to benefit and use the rhetoric that benefit will “trickle down” to the community? If we want to be sure what our candidates mean, do as editor John Harding has suggested in a recent editorial and press for specific agenda answers. And if Rex Murphy believes that munici-

NANOOSE FIRE HALL At last year’s 2013 Annual General Meeting of the Nanoose Bay Volunteer Fire Department, the Regional District of Nanaimo provided a comparative analysis of capital and operational expenses for 2009-12. Total expenses for the year ending Dec. 31, 2011 were $4,187,095. Revenues were $561,595. Tax requisition, grants $5,000. Loan proceeds $3,200,000 (your approved referendum), transfers from reserved fund of $477,000 and a surplus prior year’s of $41,585 for a total revenue of $4,285,120. Capital expense was $320,000 for a fire truck and $3,357,000 capital from reserve/ borrow for building, plus debt charges and transfer to reserve fund. The RDN showed full transparency and accountability by a full report for 2011-12 and projected 2013. I’m urging people to attend the AGM Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. at the Nanoose Bay Fire Hall and show your support for this vital service. Senior RDN & hall staff and the chair of the board will answer questions. For many years, residents have been complaining about the cost of the fire department and this is your opportunity to ask questions and obtain answers. How residents vote in the November civic election is changing. The City will use “Voting Day Only Registration” and will no longer use a voters’ list. All voters will register on the day of voting, at either advance voting or on general voting day. When arriving to vote, you will be required to provide two pieces of identification with your name and address (at least one with a signature). Reminder to register for the The Great 2014 Great BC ShakeOut Drill British Columbia on October 16 at 10.16 am. Participating is a great way for you and your family or for businesses to become better prepared to survive and recover quickly from major earthquakes. Info at shakeout.bc.ca.

Parksville Volunteer Fire Department members will once again collect food and toys, door-to-door throughout Parksville and the areas served by the Parksville Fire Protection Area. This year’s food drive is set for Saturday, November 15 and Sunday, November 16 from 9 am to 4 pm each day.

An informal survey was offered on the City’s website from August 26 to September 30 intended to understand how residents prefer their municipal news and information delivered. 71 residents and 5 non-residents completed the survey with 76% indicating they receive most of their information about the City of Parksville from local newspapers, followed by the City’s website (35%) and social media (29%). 93% indicated the PQB News is their “go-to-newspaper” for City related news with the Oceanside Star at 25% and 6% indicating they do not read any local newspapers. About 50% of respondents indicated reading online versions of both the Oceanside Star and PQB News. This page is regularly read by 61% and 25% of respondents read it occasionally.

Her legacy as a beauty and fashion icon lives on today — Audrey Hepburn is the inspiration behind the 2015 What Women Want event. The fourth annual girls night out is set for March 20, 2015 and plans are already underway to make the evening fantastic. Organizer Donna Andres, the driving force behind the very first What Women Want affair at the Parksville Community and Conference Centre, said the new and improved version will be over the top and one of Hollywood’s greatest leading ladies influenced her decorating scheme. “The theme is Tiffany. It will be blue and white and glamorous. I want it to be a fun night where girls can get dressed up,” she said. Tiffany & Co. has been the world’s premier jeweller and America’s house of design since 1837 and Hepburn’s performance in 1961’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s is still influencing fashion today. Andres, who owns Lady’s Mantle in

Parksville, said Hepburn’s style is timeless and personifies grace, elegance and charm and she wants to bring some of that super sleek vibe to Parksville. While women want a lot of things, a night out with friends shopping while sampling appies and sipping spirits can be found on many a female to-do list. Andres said the evening she is planning will provide an opportunity for women to spend time with friends and focus on the things they love including clothes, shoes, bags and accessories and pampering. Andres said the service showcase is aimed at promoting local businesses at the same time offering women a few of their favourite things. “I don’t want it to be a trade show. It will be an entertaining evening where people can get to know the businesses and the owners who have storefronts in the community. Ninety-five percent of the vendors have storefronts here, but a lot of people just don’t know where the businesses are and they aren’t aware of the great shopping we have locally.” Besides shopping locally, the night will include live entertainment, a fashion show, fitness and dance demonstrations,

Before a musician can play a guitar on stage, someone has to first build the instrument. That’s where Joe Young comes in. “It’s a passion,” said Young, a luthier, or guitar builder, who lives in Qualicum Bay. Young, who once made a 10-year career out of cutting wood for instruments, started making his own guitars about 15 years ago. “Those first years were for getting my feet wet,” he admitted, though they eventually led into making a full-time job of the art. For the past five years, Young has built guitars professionally at his home studio. In fact, his career hit a high note this September when he sold an unprecedented five guitars in one month. Young focuses mainly on building acoustic guitars, although he does occasionally venture into electric territory. For his craft, he uses a variety of high-quality woods imported from around the world. The instrument presently on the local luthier’s work bench, however, is a little more connected to home. Young is currently working on

a West Coast themed guitar made solely with Vancouver Island yew and yellow cedar. He built a similar instrument last year which he sold through a broker at Symphontree Music in Vancouver. That guitar generated a lot of interest, Young said. So much interest, in fact, that he now has four more orders for West Coast guitars. Most of Young’s work sells for $3,500-6,500, which is considered mid-range for handmade instruments. “I’m getting more artistic with these West Coast guitars, but I also want my guitars to be played,” said Young, who explains that some handmade guitars sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars and are more works of art that you’d hang on your wall. Aside from building guitars, Young now also teaches students how to be luthiers. It’s a twoway experience, he admits, saying “I learn more from the teaching than the building … students bring new ideas.” He currently has two students, though he is always looking for more. If you’d like to see Young’s work, he will have a booth at the annual Guitars by Hand show at the Errington Hall Saturday. Hosted by the Islands Luthiers’ Guild, the event showcases over 20 instrument makers from Vancouver Island, Salt Spring and other coastal communities. See LOOKING FORWARD, page A23

Brazilian guitarist returns to Errington Hall After selling out local shows in 2010 and 2012, Brazilian guitarist, percussionist and composer Celso Machado is returning to the Errington Hall this Saturday. “I really enjoy playing there,” said Machado. “It’s so relaxed …

and so easy to interact with the audience.” According to the news release from the Hall, Brazilian music blends classical European, African, Portuguese and Indigenous influences. Machado has made this musical tradition his own

over the past forty years by adding other sounds from around the world. Saturday’s show starts at 8 p.m., with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. The evening will also include an intermission where coffee and baked goods will be

available for sale. General admission is $20 and tickets can be bought now at Cranky Dog Music, Heaven on Earth and the Errington Store. Tickets for youth age 5-12 will be available at the door for $5. Children under 5 are free.

Earlier in the day, Machado will also host a workshop at the Old Fire Hall as part of the Islands Luthiers’ Guild Guitars by Hand event. Admission to the workshop is $10 and starts at 4 p.m. — NEWS Staff/Errington Hall

Local Rotarians return from Mexico house-building trip CANDACE WU

It was a whirlwind trip but the fourteen rotarians who took off to Mexico last month are back in Parksville Qualicum Beach. “It was excellent,” said Parksville’s Diana Matsuda, who was part of the larger group of 17 including many rotarians from the Parksville AM club, one rotarian from the Qualicum Beach Sunrise club, five spouses and a few friends from out of town. The group traveled to Vicente Guererro, through an organization called Live Different, where they built a house from the ground up for a family of four in-need.

Matsuda said the finished product was a 480 square foot home, equipped with two rooms, three beds and a kitchen. While she described the house as “very basic” she said it was quite an improvement from what the family was living in before — a 120 square foot home, with no doors or locks, a dirt floor and a makeshift kitchen. Matsuda said the project was a group effort and everybody helped out including locals from Vicente Guererro, workers from Live Different and the family who the home was built for — a Mexican couple with two children. Matsuda said as time went on, the volunteers got to know the family more and more. One day, she said, some of the volunteers even visited the children’s school. She called the relationship the family had with the volunteers “reciprocal.”

“We got as much from them (the family) as they did from us in terms of understanding,” she said. “It’s not like we were just there for them.” Once the house was built, Matsuda said volunteers fully furnished it and bought the family a month’s worth of

food. She recalled the moment when the completed home, full of furniture and food, was finally unveiled to the family. “It was a very emotional experience,” she said. “The family was just so excited to get a new house, and a new life, really.”

Polly passed away peacefully at the Eagle Park Health Centre Facility in Qualicum Beach, BC, on Monday, September 15, 2014 at the age of 94. She will be sadly missed by her daughters Sandy Thompson of Qualicum Beach, BC, Donna Suski of Vernon, BC, and son Lanny (Barb) Kingerski of Winnipeg, MB, 6 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Polly was predeceased by her husband, Adolphe, October 16, 1995. Mom & Dad resided in Fort Frances, Thunder Bay and Sudbury ON. They moved to Parksville in 1978, after Dadâ€™s retirement in 1977. Momâ€™s passion was her family, cooking/baking (cabbage rolls were the best) and gardening. She loved her candy, chocolates and ice cream. Momâ€™s beautiful smile was magnetic to everyone she met. A special thanks to all the staff at Eagle Park for their kind and compassionate care for Mom during her stay and being here for us during this difficult time. At Momâ€™s request, cremation has taken place and a private family inurnment will be held at a later date. Ernest passed peacefully in his home on Monday, October 6, 2014. Ernest was predeceased by his son David Eric in 2006. Ernest was a longtime member of the Britannia Yacht Club in Ottawa, Ontario and Collins Bay Yacht Club in Kingston, Ontario. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our mother and grandmother Bernice Sheehan after a brief battle with heart disease. She passed away peacefully at Nanaimo Regional Hospital where she had received excellent, compassionate care. Bernice was predeceased by her devoted husband Bernard of forty four years and her loving sisters. She will be dearly missed by all of her Children; Gail (Peter), Patrick (Donna), Fern (Dave), Noreen (Robin), Melanie McMaster and Grandchildren; Joan, Nicole, Michael, Deanna, as well as loved ones Kyle McGuire, Richard McPartlin and many nieces and nephews. She was born in Rock Bay BC and lived in various places the first years of her life. After meeting her husband in Merritt, they settled in Vancouver for over forty years, raising their family. She ran a wonderful home daycare in the sixties and seventies, which lead her and Bernard into foster care. They had numerous foster children over the years and Bernice continued fostering until her passing. In 1994 she moved to Parksville BC and made that her home for her remaining years. Bernice was a kind hearted woman with a great sense of humour that she kept until the end. There arenâ€™t many like her and we were blessed to have her in our lives. We love you and miss you Mom, Mommy, Grandma, Auntie, Friend, Bernice. Love you always. She was an animal lover and strays always found their way into her heart and her home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the SPCA or to the Heart and Stroke foundation. There will be a celebration of life held on Saturday, October 18th at 623 Temple Street. Drop in between 2:00 and 6:00 to wish Bernice farewell.

Karl was born in Vancouver and passed away suddenly but peacefully in Parksville. He was predeceased by his father Karl and mother Alice. Karl was a long time resident of Parksville where he was very involved in Special Olympics, bowling and Monday bingo at the seniors drop in centre, as well as other community organizations and events. A gentle and kind man, Karl was very well known and liked in the community and was a special friend to all those he knew and met. Karl is survived by brothers Terry (Linda), Ken (Kathy); nephew Kevin; nieces Kimberly, Karen, Kristie, Kendra & Kourtney. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to Catherine and all the staff at Halliday House, who treated Karl with loving care in the years he resided with them. He will be missed. A celebration of Karlâ€™s life will take place at a later date.

As the season ends, Qualicum Beach’s Matt Haddad was named the 2014 PacWest Golf men’s player of the year. Haddad, a Kwalikum Secondary School grad, is in his fifth year at Vancouver Island University and just wrapped up his second year as the captain of the VIU men’s golf team. Haddad was also named an all-star, one of five in the PacWest (Pacific Western Athletic Association), for his performance. “It’s kind of bitter sweet when I really think about it,” Haddad said. “It’s disappointing because, as a team, we wanted to be in contention to win but we finished up in fourth spot.” “After the season was finished, I had a few days to really think about it and let everything sink in and it’s an honour to win both of those awards. Ultimately, it would have been much better to have the recognition as a team, but I’m still very honored to win both of those awards.” Haddad had an excellent season, finishing in the top six of each tournament the VIU squad took part in, on an individual score. He finished the season with an average round of 72, which was good enough to land him at the top of the leader board,

six strokes ahead of the competition. “I was able to be consistent all season and that felt really good,” Haddad said. “I

had a few chances at some tournaments to win but came runner up. But still, being able to average a round of 72 on the

season was real nice and I’m pretty happy with those numbers that I put up.” Fellow Qualicum Beach resident and former KSS Kondor Kyler Bourgeault, joined his old friend Haddad at VIU this year. “It was pretty cool to have him on board, for sure,” Haddad said. “I knew him for a few years before I came here and he’s always been a good golfer. So to have him join our team this year and give us some great rounds, it was really nice to be able to have him in the fold.” Haddad will now turn his attention to the PING Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships, which take place October 14–17 at the Club de Golf Lorette in Quebec City, Quebec. He’s competing for VIU, but it will be in the individual tournament, where he hopes to continue the success he’s had all year. “I’m just hoping to stay consistent like I’ve been all year,” he said. “If I can stay in contention and put myself in a good position to try and win it on the last day, I think anything is possible.” “It’s all about keeping up the good golf I’ve been playing so far and I feel like I can do it. It’s an honour to be there representing VIU and I hope that I can do them proud and bring home one more trophy in my final year here.”

An early goal deflated the tires of the Save–On–Foods Oceanside Generals as they dropped a 6–2 decision to the Saanich Braves, as the Generals record falls to two wins and nine losses. The Generals gave up a goal to the Braves 36 seconds in. Sebastian Powsey notched his first goal of the season at the 5:26 mark to tie things up but

Saanich replied with a goal of their own just 14 seconds later and it was an uphill climb from there. Chase Gaudreault, returning from a call up to the BCHL’s Alberni Valley Bulldogs, scored the second goal for the Gens, his second on the season. “It’s tough, as a team, to give up an early one on the road,” forward and alternate captain Jonah Pearson said. “It’s even

more frustrating to tie it up only to have them get another one right after. We just need to calm down and tighten up in our own end, it comes with structure and systems and we really need to work on that.” The Generals had two new faces in the lineup, AP Jake McKenzie and Keagan Fedorko from Burnaby, to go along with Joshua Carless–Jones, who up to this point in the season had

played defense but was on a forward line that night. Qualicum Beach’s Ben Mohl was also moved from the roster and has now been carded, as an AP. Parksville’s Jarrett Weme is also no longer part of the team. With all the changes in the lineup, the loss to Saanich just adds more frustration. “This week has been really stressful for the team, for sure,”

Pearson said. “I think there’s a feeling of safety on this team and it’s showing in the way we practise, which affects the way we play,” he said. “We need guys to be desperate to improve and get more minutes. Parksville Beach is getting back in the swing of things. After a three-month hiatus, the wheelchair accessible swing located in Parksville’s community park has been re-opened to the public — pending a few conditions, of course. And the news has one Parksville mother “ecstatic.” “I’m happy that it’s open,” Tami Bravender told The NEWS last Tuesday afternoon before taking her daughter down to the park to try it out. Bravender’s nine-year-old daughter, Jesi, was born with cerebral palsy and the young girl uses a wheelchair. Bravender said her daughter was only able to use the wheelchair accessible swing twice last summer before it was taken down due to safety concerns from the City of Parksville. However, the City issued a news release last week stating the swing has officially been reinstalled. “The wheelchair swing will remain secured in place with a set of in-ground anchors and

lock pins which can be removed using a combination provided to the public via phone or online,” states the release. “Instructions on removing the locking mechanisms, operating the swing and replacing the locks after use can also be found on the sign located in the play area.” Bravender said she’s “happy that it (the swing) will be under lockdown when not in use.” While she’s thrilled the swing is open for business again, she maintains “this whole thing should never have happened.” “Parents and caregivers need to be respectful of kids who are different,” Bravender said. “I watched parents read the sign and still let their kids play on it (before the swing was shut down). Now it’s under lockdown when not in use and I am happy. Very.” If you are interested in using the wheelchair accessible swing and would like to obtain the combination needed to access it call 250-2486144 at any time or scan the QR code located on the sign situated near the swing. According to the City of Parksville, it is hoped the re-installation of the swing will provide a safe play opportunity for park users in wheelchairs and that all park users will respect and abide by the proper use of this equipment.
