Traffic gets the runaround for marathon

Marathoner inspired by beginning racers Kevin Laird Victoria News

Catrin Jones’ running heroes don’t include the likes of marathon greats Meb Keflezighi, Ryan Hall, Shalane Flanagan or Rita Jeptoo. No, it’s much more personal. Jones, 35, the reigning women’s champion in the Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon, gets her biggest inspiration from recreational runners who challenge the 42.2-kilometre torture test. “People who inspire me the most is anyone who takes on a marathon or a race, people who are out there running sometimes up to six hours. I admire those people more than anything,” said Jones, who has won the Fitness “Victoria has Goodlife Victoria Marathon a great running twice in the last four years. community. I Jones will line don’t think I’d be up on Sunday for 35th edition of running if I wasn’t the the Victoria race, living here.” hoping to defend - Catrin Jones the women’s title. Last year the Fairfield resident finished in an impressive two hours, 43 minutes and three seconds, besting her 2010 winning time by more than nine minutes. In 2013, Jones went on quite a tear. She took part in more than 20 races competing in everything from half-marathons to ultramarathons. Along with the Victoria marathon win, she placed third at the Vancouver Marathon, won the Whistler and Comox half-marathons and placed second at the Canadian championships in Ottawa. To top it off, she took part in the World Francophone Games, representing Canada. A pelvis injury has slowed her pace this year, but she has quietly been training with coach Jim Finlayson, getting stronger and ready to take on the next challenges. “Every race is an opportunity to improve,” Jones said in an interview this week. “I look at in a way to improve for the next race and the race after that.” And it’s that attitude which has taken her to the elite level in the sport. Jonathan Foweraker, elite athlete co-ordinator for the marathon, said having someone local compete at the elite level is not only good for the race but the running community. “She’s a wonderful athlete,” he said. “As you are out on your run, you

It’s very encouraging.” Jones started marathon running in 2006 when she was 27, after a career as a competitive swimmer. Since then she has competed in 17 marathons and has expectations to do more as well as more trail ultra-marathons. “Every race I try I enjoy (running more) and learn to run better,” she said. “Victoria has a great running community. I don’t think I’d be running if I wasn’t living here.” It’s not surprising then that the Victoria

marathon is one of her favourite races. “It’s not as overwhelming like the big races, but you still get good competitors,” Jones said. “And I suppose because it is my hometown it’s a little closer to the heart. I go run in my neighbourhood for a few hours and I’m good to go.” Can she repeat as champion? “I’d love to, but I have no idea. I’m going into the race with a completely open mind. I’m just thrilled to be able to run this year again.” klaird@vicnews.com

The Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon on Sunday (Oct. 12) will cause widespread road closures in Victoria and Oak Bay. The 42.2-kilometre marathon route will start in downtown Victoria on Menzies Street and wind through the downtown core into James Bay and Beacon Hill Park, along Dallas Road to Gonzales Bay. It will proceed into Fairfield, Oak Bay and Uplands before the turnaround. The route then returns the same way. There will be a loop at the Lawndale/Cowichan area that will be the turnaround point for the halfmarathon. Some small residential roadways on the route will be closed for various periods of time. Anyone living in the area south of McNeill Avenue, east of Foul Bay Avenue and west of Oliver Street and need to cross the marathon route in their vehicle, may do so on Foul Bay Road at McNeill Avenue. Following the start of the two main races – the half-marathon at 7:30 a.m. and the marathon at 8:45 a.m. Menzies, Michigan, Government and Wharf streets will be closed between 7:25 to 7:45 a.m. and 8:40 to 9 a.m. Johnson Street will be closed from Wharf to Cook between 7:35 to 8:15 a.m. and 8:50 to 9:10 a.m. All traffic will have full access north of Humboldt, west of Cook following the last runner at approximately 9:30 a.m. to access Douglas Street and Blanshard and escape north out of Victoria. No traffic will be permitted on Dallas Road between 7:15 a.m. and 2 p.m. The police will open the course as soon as it is safe for participants and allow cars on the route. Police will allow some traffic to travel across the race route when it is safe. The Thrifty Foods Kids Run will use Menzies (from Kingston to Superior) and Superior (from Menzies to Montreal); these roads will be closed to traffic and parking from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Montreal Street (from Superior to Kingston) and Kingston (from Montreal to Menzies) will be closed from 10:15 to 11:30 a.m. More information on road closures, escape routes and parking can be viewed online at runvictoriamarathon. com/weekend/roadclosures.php editor@oakbaynews.com

Intersection upgrade is on Andrea Peacock Special to the News

The long wait is over. After being considered for 10 years, the last intersection in Oak Bay without vehicle-sensing traffic lights is finally getting upgraded this fall. Lights at the intersection of Foul Bay and Lansdowne roads will change accordingly based on traffic, which will be sensed by the controller. “There will be a modern controller so that you can control the signal timings to suit the demand from the vehicles,” said Dave Marshall, Oak Bay director of engineering. “It’ll sense the vehicles that need to be accommodated, so that way you don’t have to sit there and wait if there’s nobody else in the intersection.” The cost of the project is approximately $220,000. It was put into Oak Bay’s budget last year, but the search was on for funding partners,

said mayor Nils Jensen. Currently, Oak Bay has received grants from the CRD and ICBC for a total of $125,000. Oak Bay is also working on another funding possibility of about $50,000, said Jensen. ICBC’s grant is contingent on the upgrade being finished by Dec. 31 of this year. The upgrade will serve to improve the flow of traffic and the safety of cyclists, said Jensen. “That’s one of our busiest cycling corridors,” said Jensen. “We’re going to make it safer for cyclists to cross from one side to the other. We’re going to be embedding a colour into the pavement as people are going north on Foul Bay, because that intersection doesn’t align fully.” The northwest part of the intersection is in Saanich, but this intersection is Oak Bay’s responsibility. “We’re essentially bringing it up to 2014 standards,” said Jensen. editor@oakbaynews.com

Painted pianos up for auction

Event to gauge interest in Oak Bay public art Christine van Reeuwyk News staff

A pair of pianos from Oak Bay’s dip into public art this summer are up for auction this month. Piano Magic, set to celebrate Oak Bay Summer Art 2014, which included painted public pianos as well as a series of artistloaned installations throughout the community, will be held at the Oak Bay Beach Hotel lobby on Oct. 24 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. “They’re in good working order,” said arts laureate Barbara Adams, noting they’ve had a tune up and check out. Where are they now? Sub Quercu Felicitas, bearing the Oak Bay crest and motto painted by Robert Amos is in the Oak Bay Municipal Hall foyer under the portraits of the Oak Bay mayors. “So far it’s going to stay there, because it seems to fit. And it looks great there,” Adams said. advance bids followed by the live auction event Piano Magic the next day. Early bid forms can be submitted through their respective venues until Oct. 17. Bids can be made to the office of the Oak Bay Beach Hotel from Oct. 18 to 23. Adams hopes people will consider the art piano for a business to create a new dimension, as a donation to a school or club for a tax receipt, or purchasing and donating a piano back to Oak Bay for Summer Art 2015 (also for a tax receipt). “This artist, her work sells for $3,400 for a painting,” Adams said gesturing to Bloom Box. Houston’s paintings, which are regularly on display at nearby Eclectic Gallery, can fetch upwards of $2,900. Adams will also gauge the interest in purchasing some of the borrowed art for the community. Salish Sea, created by First Nation artist Chris Paul, that spent the summer adjacent to the Oak Bay Marina parking lot “offers us an opportunity to see the Salish Sea through the eyes of the First Nations,” she said. “Everybody seems to think that should stay. So we’re working on that,” Adams said. “If someone would buy it, they could donate it back to the municipality for a full tax receipt. There seems to be such a desire on everyone’s part to make it all work.” cvanreeuwyk@oakbaynews.com

Marathon more than just a race Marathon running to most of us is mystifying. Why anyone would put themselves through a 42.2-kilometre torture test is beyond comprehension. Yet, runners will tell you about the challenge; some to test their abilities against worthy competitors; others just the simple pleasure of running. The event There will be as many reasons at the starting line aids health, for the Goodlife Fitness charitable Victoria Marathon as there are runners – and we expect causes and many. sense of Since the event’s humble beginnings 35 years ago community when 700 participated in the first race, it has grown into one of Victoria and Oak Bay’s premier events, drawing more than 11,000 runners this weekend. The Victoria Marathon Society conducted an economic impact analysis to estimate the economic benefit of the 2010 event. The result was a $7.1-million impact over marathon weekend. But there’s more to the marathon than can be justified in dollars. They are the promotion of health, fitness and a sense of community. Over the years, the marathon (which actually consists of four races: marathon, halfmarathon, 8K road race and kids’ run) has collectively raised millions for local charities from literacy initiatives to amateur sports. This year runners were given the opportunity to raise personal pledges for 22 charities. It’s a laudable cause. And runners deserve our applause for such noble efforts. Most runners have spent weeks – if not months – preparing for this weekend’s races. That’s a lot of sweat and determination. But the biggest winners this weekend will not be the elite runners who come from far and wide. Instead, our community wins with this kind of event, not only from an economic windfall, but on a societal level also.

OAK BAY NEWS - Friday, October 10, 2014 OAK BAY NEWS - Friday, October 10, 2014

Cold and frightened, but otherwise unharmed, a 17-year-old girl was rescued from the waters off Oak Bay Monday night. The young exchange student had gone kayaking just after 4 p.m. and her kayak dolly and shoes were noticed by a couple out for a walk along Willows Beach later in the evening. The pair thought it was unusual and took their own boat out to check local waters after placing a call to the Rescue Coordination Centre. “After placing another call to RCC they learned that a kayaker had indeed been reported missing,” said Oak Bay police Sgt. Angus Wagnell. “They continued their search and located the female on a rocky outcropping out by Chatham

Island around 9 p.m. She was cold, but otherwise healthy.” The girl had not capsized her kayak, but had been swept away by the current several times while attempting to return to shore. She eventually steered her vessel onto the rocks and waited for help. The official search was launched at about 7:45 p.m. and included Oak Bay, Saanich and Victoria police, along with the Oak Bay fire department, coast guard, and the Oak Bay Sea Rescue Society. The Oak Bay Police would like to express their appreciation to all the assistance that was provided by the various agencies and a special thank you to the couple for acting on their instincts and taking the initiative to start a search on their own,” said Wagnell. editor@oakbaynews.com

LEAF CLEARING Leaves from the trees that give Oak Bay its name are now falling, and municipal crews have readied the leaf vacuuming equipment for the campaign which will begin soon to clear them from streets and gutters all over the Municipality. The leaf clearing program begins in late October and will continue until all leaves are collected rather than on a pre-determined street by street schedule. The reason for this annual blitz is to prevent catch basins and storm drains from becoming clogged to the point where they cannot cope with the runoff from a moderate to heavy rainfall. It takes quite a while to cover the entire Municipality, however, and the more leaves there are on the street at any one time, the more likely it is that problems will occur before our crews can get to the area. We can handle the leaves deposited on the street by the normal forces of nature. We run into difficulty, however, when residents rake leaves onto the street from their own properties in anticipation of the arrival of our vacuum, or leave other garden refuse or tree prunings on the boulevard expecting it to be picked up with the leaves. Piles of leaves on the roads also create safety hazards for cyclists. We will pick up only leaves from the boulevard (no garden refuse or tree prunings), but please

DO NOT RAKE LEAVES ONTO THE STREET! Please do not place leaves in plastic bags as they get caught in the vacuum! In the interest of pedestrian safety, please do not place leaves on the sidewalk. Thank you for your cooperation.

Eelgrass mapping a plan to protect SeaChange will map Oak Bay shoreline to examine species loss Andrea Peacock Special to the News

The reduction of eelgrass in the ocean negatively affects marine life according to SeaChange Marine Conservation Society, which is investigating Oak Bay’s waters to map eelgrass on our shoreline. Eelgrass is underwater vegetation that provides a habitat for 80 per cent of commercially important fish and shellfish at some point in their life cycle, said Nikki Wright, executive director of SeaChange. “Eelgrass serves as a place for food and shelter for these fish and wildlife, which goes all the way up the food chain to mammals and to us,” said Wright. With a lack of eelgrass, Wright said biodiversity would suffer. It could lead to fewer fish for us to consume from the ocean. In order to track where the eelgrass is, SeaChange has mapped its existence in the Saanich Inlet and

Elgin Street path fix on the waiting list

Elgin Street and the access to the adjacent pathway is a long standing concern for the Oak Bay Active Transportation Advisory Committee. Its first concern is to improve access from Elgin to the recreation centre and high school. ATAC holds the goal of seeing the pathway lead right through to the University of Victoria and south Oak Bay. While they are willing to put the entire budget toward the first phase of work, there aren’t enough staff to get to the project done this year as they’re fully engaged in other projects. ATAC will consider getting renderings done as a start this year.

York Street development not yet an official proposal

A proposed development that hasn’t yet submitted an application to the district stirred some neighbourhood

concern this month. Residents of the Yale Road neighbourhood attended the Active Transportation Advisory Committee meeting Oct. 7 to voice concerns about a suggested project after an information meeting the week before. “Until they make an application we’re not going to make comment,” said ATAC chair Kris Nichols. “Council generally seeks input (from us) after an application is made.” Residents spoke of concerns over altering pedestrian and vehicle traffic on Elgin and Byron roads along with potential tree removal on the site.

Bank drafting bike rack

The bike rack installed at the corner of Hampshire Road and Oak Bay Avenue this summer is so popular that the adjacent TD Bank wants to take ownership. They’ve offered to replace the bike corral with one of their own, freeing up the municipally owned rack for another site,

the Active Transportation Advisory Committee heard Oct. 7. The current corral uses the space of one car and can hold up to eight bikes and is often filled by 8:30 a.m. on a weekday. Accepting the offer would require council approval.

Charging station policy under scope

While the sign on Oak Bay Avenue appears to welcome drivers to use the District of Oak Bay’s two electric charging stations, reception can be less than welcome the Oak Bay Active Transportation Advisory Committee heard. One member recounted the tale of a friend who found one spot filled by a district vehicle and a 30-minute time limit for use by those “visiting” municipal hall. The committee will recommend council consider reviewing electric vehicle charging policy for the two stations that promotes electric use in Oak Bay. cvanreeuwyk@oakbaynews.com

Ford offers four engines and even the smallest 2.7L EcoBoost will still tow up to 3.8 tonnes. The cab is quieter, yet larger. The floor is flat yet has more storage compartments. The dash is less cluttered yet offers more information. Do you sense a theme here? Consider that the design phase of this truck took four years and the testing was the most intense ever. The result? A list of improvements a hockey rink long – that’s a fact. Now, how will they all work together? Well Ford’s claims will have to play out on roads, across Canada, in the coming years. Kia has an Electric Soul By Bob McHugh

Kia joins the growing list of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers with Soul EV, a clever adaptation of its tall 5-door compact with the funky styling. Although still a small slice of the overall car market, EV sales are growing rapidly and so is the public charge station infrastructure that’s crucial to its success, especially in urban areas. A digital readout showed 187 km of driving range available as we headed out on a test loop around Metro Vancouver. And after about 30 minutes of, no special treatment, driving with frequent stops, starts, hill climbs and descents, the Soul EV showed 162 km was still available. That's relevant, as the Soul EV’s officially rated driving range is 149 km. In addition to being quiet and fuel-free, Soul EV effectively matches the practical user features of its gasoline counterpart. It can seat 4 to 5 passengers and has the same large rear cargo area. Kia's polymer (electrolyte) lithium ion battery pack is compact and easier to hide than others, as is can be molded into different shapes. In Soul EV it's centrally fitted under the seats and a raised rear floor pan. The gasoline engine is replaced by a 109 horsepower liquid-cooled AC synchronous permanent magnet electric motor that can generate a whopping

210 lb-ft of torque. That's 59 lb-ft more than the 2.0-litre gasoline engine version of Soul. Standing starts were not as jumpy as other electric vehicles tend to be and the overall performance of the electric drivetrain was impressively smooth. Charger ports for the battery pack are hidden behind a hinged cover in the front grille. The smaller port accepts either a 120 volt (level 1) or a 240 volt (level2) charge connector. A portable level 1 unit is stored in the vehicle and Kia Canada will also provide Soul EV buyers with a level 2 charge unit (made by Bosch) for home installation, free of charge. The charger unit can also be used to pre-heat or pre-cool the Soul EV, while plugged into the grid. You can also program it to start or complete charging at a certain time. The level 1 charger plugs into any electrical outlet, but can take up to 24-hours to fully recharge the w battery pack. A level 2 charger (with 30 amp service) cuts the maximum recharge time to under

SPECIAL

ROAD - READY

5-hours. And a level 3 fast charge station can pump-in an 80 per cent charge in less than 30 minutes. We didn’t take it out on the freeway, but the Soul EV seemed very stable (it’s heavier then the gas engine Soul) and Kia claims a top speed of 145 km/hour. Kia also claims that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hour faster (by 4 seconds) than a Nissan Leaf. It’s agile and peppy, with lots of initial get up and go, but it’s also no dragster. The two-tone gray interior theme came with attractive and contrasting blue stitching. Extensive use of bio-friendly interior materials also makes Soul EV the most eco-friendly vehicle made by Kia. It feature materials derived from organic substances such as sugar cane, corn, cellulose, and wood powder. Soul EV is only available through selected Kia dealers in major Canadian urban centres (Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver). Unlike Quebec and Ontario, however, BC’s incentive program for eco-friendly vehicles ran out of cash back in March of this year. Soul EV does qualify for an $8,000 federal government rebate and that certainly helps make the purchase price more palatable. The Kia Soul EV definitely rocks and is a must-drive for anyone considering an EV in this price range.

City of light shines brightly on dream machines By Zack Spencer

Paris, France – The Paris Auto Show is one of those must-visit events for those of us charged with reporting on the latest and greatest new vehicles. So many manufacturers now develop products for a world market so these early European shows often offer a glimpse of what’s coming next to our shores. Here are five machines that caught my eye.

Lamborghini Asterion

Let’s start with a dream machine. The Lamborghini Asterion concept car was certainly a showstopper.

Sidestepping the current design approach of angular shapes with hard edges, this new Lambo has a more curvaceous look that almost mimics a front engine car. What is wedged in the middle of this exotic is a hybrid system that marries a naturally aspirated 5.2L V10 engine with three electric motors (Two in the front producing all wheel drive and another in the transmission for full electric drive capability), producing a whopping 910hp with acceleration that will see this car run to 100km in just three seconds. The Asterion is capable of running on just electric power for roughly 30km and, providing silent driving in a wickedly sexy machine. This is a just a concept at this point but with

mounting pressure on car makers to reduce carbon output and the fact the Porsche brand (Another VW Group brand) already has the 918 hybrid, this looks like it could make it to market within the next few years.

VW Golf Alltrack

Ok, now back to earth. With the trend towards all-wheel-drive (AWD) gaining more and more momentum it was only a matter of time before cars previously without AWD start to appear with this option. Take the popular VW Golf wagon, soon to be available in Europe with AWD and a slightly higher ground clearance. Called the Alltrack, this more rugged

Lamborghini Asterion looking and capable VW will certainly appeal to buyers of the Subaru Outback or Audi Allroad. In North America, we don’t buy many

wagons but we certainly love when manufacturers add a slightly higher ride-height, lower body cladding plus AWD and call them a crossover vehicle. Sales jump. Not available in Canada but after chatting with VW Canada executives, they have put in a request to Germany to get this car for our AWD-loving climate. Stay tuned.

Imagine a pure electric, three-wheel, scooter-like vehicle, with a fixed roof, steering wheel and can drive up to 45km/h with 50km of electric range. The Toyota i-Road attracted big crowds when it was demonstrated at this year’s Paris Show. The small wheel at the rear of the i-Road pivots at low speed for amazing maneuverability, plus when driven at higher speeds the entire vehicle tilts over like a motorcycle with the front wheels rotating independently of each other. It looks odd and must feel odd to drive but the upside is covered driving, without a helmet, and emissions free transportation. The i-Road is being tested in Japan and will be used in the French city of Grenoble as part of a vehicle-sharing program. This type of vehicle already exists in Europe but the tilting and pivoting elements make it unique. This would not be popular on our wider roads in North America but the i-Road will fit right in on Europe’s busy streets.

The Chrysler Groups’ parent company Fiat is at it again, taking the best that its European brands have to offer and marrying them with American brands. The Fiat 500L has had a mild reception here in North America so now they have taken the same platform and produced the Jeep Renegade. To complete the circle, the same Renegade approach is being used with this Fiat 500X, basically, taking the same Jeep-like elements and making them into a Fiat. The 500X will be available with front wheel drive (FWD) or AWD and a variety of engine and transmission options in Europe. The engine choices have not been divulged for our market but expect to see the 170hp 1.4 turbo 4-cylinder and the 184hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engines here. The Fiat 500L has not been a hit for Fiat but, yet again, add a more rugged look and the sales will likely follow.

Volvo XC90

Will the introduction of an all-new, full-size XC90 SUV be enough to save Volvo here in North America? Time will tell but the crowds at the Volvo stand in Paris were packed with people combing over every pert of this attractive SUV. It has been over ten years since Volvo introduced the original XC90 and the years have not been good to this vehicle or the brand. Sales for the XC90 and Volvo in general have been pathetic in North America. This new XC90 has a lot going for it and Volvo hopes it will help revive the brand. The XC90 will be sold in Canada with AWD in the T6 or T8 engine variants. Both are turbocharged and supercharged and are matched to an 8-speed automatic. The T6 has 320hp and the T8 comes with an additional 80hp electric motor for improved power and efficiency. The three-row design remains intact but the interior is larger for more space. The dash is a standout with a vertical iPad-like application in the centre for class-leading connectivity and usability. The price of the T6 will start at $60,700 and the T8 will start at $73,400. If this short list this isn’t enough to satisfy your curiosity, check out my Paris gallery at drivewaybc.ca zack.spencer@drivewaybc.ca

Inspiring parents and children to be ‘heart-centred’ Meetup group among tools for parents looking to learn from others Angela Cowan News Gazette staff

For Colleen Adrian, helping other parents feel capable and confident in their parenting styles, helping them lead “authentic and heart-centred” lives, has become the driving passion in her life. To further that passion, she’s hosting a monthly Meetup group to bring parents together in a supportive and collaborative environment. Adrian, a retired nurse with her masters degree and over 20 years experience, has been writing about parenting, hosting workshops and coaching on a one-to-one basis for several years through her company Crystal Clear Living. She added the monthly meeting to “provide a place to create community and support for parents who are trying to do things differently.” “You can’t always parent children the same way (as others),” she says. “I think we have instincts about that, but there’s a lot of social pressure to do things a certain way. And there’s a lot of pressure for children to conform as well.” After giving birth to her son 10 years ago, Adrian left nursing to pursue alternative health practices.

She became a Reiki master and trained in specialized kinesiology and non-violent communication to learn to be the parent she had envisioned for herself. “I really wanted to change things, but I was finding it really hard. I went on quite an intense research journey myself.” Adrian is able to pass along the fruits of that research now, and teaches parents “how to get some clarity and access their own knowing.” “Sometimes we can be so hard on ourselves and think we’re bad parents,” she says. “(The meetup) gives a sense of not being alone.” Adrian focuses on giving parents effective communication and conflict resolution skills to strengthen their relationship with their children. “It’s about creating open, meaningful relationships with family. And it allows our children to stay connected and open-hearted. It’s about not being afraid to step out and be a Picasso or an Emily Carr. Not being afraid to just get out there and express yourself.” “We love our children so much and we really want them to live to their full potential.” The next monthly Meetup will be in the first week of November. Q:

I’m the only child (son) in our family with no ‘aging parent’ experience. I live in another province but have arranged to spend three weeks with them in the very near future. Can you tell me some signs that I should be aware of in case they shouldn’t be living alone any more?

A:

Some common signs that a move to a more supportive environment such as a retirement residence may be a good idea for your loved one(s), are: 1. Less active lifestyle and the tendency to stay home; becoming less socially engaged. 2. You notice a change in the quality of (their) communication or the frequency of communication. 3. You may see fewer invitations to their home and notice a change in visit patterns. 4. They have unopened bills and other mail. 5. Their home is unkempt, laundry or dishes are piling up. 6. They experience unexplained weight loss. 7. You notice unusual damage to their home or vehicle. 8. Bruises or other signs of trauma from falls or difficulty navigating around the house. If you do notice any of these signs, arrange a meeting with their family doctor. Depending upon the severity and extent of support required, start your research. A Senior Living Community may be an appropriate option, but certainly is not the only option. One very useful tool is the Seniors Serving Seniors publication. Halloween costumes a challenge When my kids were small, the mere mention of Halloween stirred up a cauldron of angst. As the words, “What are you going to be for Halloween?” starting buzzing among the girls and their friends, I knew, inevitably, I would be called upon to create something obscure like a slug, or inappropriate Susan to the weather – “Yes! This delicate fairy needs to wear a coat!” – or just plain impossible. The low point was the year I “sewed” the aforementioned slug costume for my elder daughter. I can’t sew, and that pretty much sums up that experience. However, although my sewing skills never improved, I did get wiser. One year, a few months before the main event, I carefully considered the character Pippy Long Stocking. I mentioned Pippy and Halloween in the same breath, and it worked. Danica would LOVE to be Pippy! I bought a thrift store Pippy dress and red hair spray. I inserted a straightened coat hanger

into Danica’s hair, and then braided her long tresses around it. When Danica sewed her own patches onto the dress and apron, I felt like dropping to my knees in thanks. Sierra continued to grasp her childhood-long penchant for selecting one set of clothes and Lundy wearing them day after day, month after month. From her preschool adoration of a flowery, black-bodiced dress and Kindergarten addiction to Osh Kosh overalls, her fashion flair evolved in Grade One to a single pair of cut-off shorts with tattered tights and gumboots, and by this year, velour shirts and jeans. “So what do you want to be for Halloween?” I asked, crossing my fingers. “You know, ghosts are really exciting — you get to cut holes in a sheet and wear it over your head!” “I want to be a bat.” “A bat?” I said, trying to swallow my excitement. “But weren’t you a bat last year?” “Yup.”

I held my breath. “We, ah, might even have last year’s costume hanging around somewhere. The one you can wear a coat underneath.” “Yup.” You mean I don’t have to sew? I don’t have to traipse through drug stores and closets and dress-up boxes? I don’t have to cut and paste and plan? Bats are a really, really good thing. Maybe you could be one next year too, huh? Suddenly I liked Halloween! We zipped around the trick-or-treating block; the girls picked up several Caramilk bars (Danica doesn’t like chocolate so guess who got her bounty!) and did a trip through the Spook House. This was the first year the girls did Spook House. Sierra blazed through it, hoping to find something that would scare her, while Danica clung to my arm and squeezed her eyes shut at every corner. It was a fine evening. And when we got home I put away the Pippy costume, and began working right away on convincing Sierra to wear it next year. Susan Lundy is editor of Boulevard Magazine.

Balancing business and family: Q&A Colleen Lembcke has a full life running her own salon in Sooke (just moved from the West Shore) and jointly caring for her six children with her hubby.

Q How do you find time for

“you?”

A

I have to make time. It’s not easy, we have busy chaotic days, which is the normal in our house, so I just get out and do it. I don’t give into being tired. Playing soccer and exercising balances me. It’s not always the first thing I want to do at the end of a long day, and having six children makes it a challenge, but I know it’s my way of recharging, emotionally and physically.

Q

What are you reading right now? With your kids?

A

When I can find a few moments before falling asleep, I look forward to finishing my book, The KingMaker’s Daughter, by Philippa Gregory. With my children, we do most of our reading during homework time. For my son and I, we read books collected over the years with my girls: Dora the Explorer, Clifford, Sesame Street, Thomas the Tank Engine. I have great little helpers who seem to really capture the adventures in the stories!

Q

What is your favourite family activity to share together?

Photo contributed

Colleen Lembcke, seated with son William, 2, joins daughters Sarah, 12 (left); Kayleigh, 15; Danielle, 8; Breanna, 17, and Emma, 12.

A

We frequently visit Sooke Potholes in the summer. It’s so easy for us. We pack up the snacks and into the car for a quick 15 min. drive, for two hours of fun. But, if anything, my favourite activity is our free time spent together making dinner on Sunday. The girls help in the kitchen, bringing us together, and we have our girl talk.

Q

The part of your day you look forward to the most?

A

That would in the morning, 8:30 to 9:50 a.m. The girls are at school, and I have just over an hour before I start my day. Having one on one time with my son is awesome. The morning is almost the only time he will cuddle with his mommy, so I take it when I can get it!
