Mission moves to single senior high school Reconfiguration to achieve ‘critical mass’ of students Tyler OLSEN ABBOTSFORD NEWS

The Mission board of education decided Monday night to create a single high school at Mission Secondary for all of the district’s Grade 10, 11 and 12 students. The reconfiguration will also turn Heritage Park and Hatzic secondary schools into middle schools for students in grades 7 through 9. Trustees said the move was necessary in order to provide students with advanced and specialized courses and programs, many of which had been cut as enrolment fell in recent years. All four school trustees present — Randy Cairns, Shelley Carter, chair Edie Heinrichs, and vice-chair Jim Taylor — approved the changes. Trustee Carol Hamilton was not present. The trustees told a crowd of around 50 parents, teachers and community members that Mission secondary had been recommended as the site of the new school for several reasons, including financial considerations. Using Mission secondary as the senior high school would see an influx of around 110 students into the 62-year-old building and cost around $1.5 million. For Heritage Park to be used, space would need to be made for around 400 students, at a projected cost of $4.5 million. Taylor, who had at one time favoured the use of Heritage Park for the new senior high school, said the

Moving senior students into Mission would allow for a more seamless transition, trustees said. They also expressed hope that the school district would be able to convince the province to replace the 62-year-old Mission secondary within the next decade. District superintendent Bill Fletcher also announced Heritage Park secondary principal Jim Pearce, and

vice-principal Beth-Anne Cullen will take on those roles at the new high school.

would be a drastic improvement over the current situation.

“If we continue to do the same things, we’re done,” Pearce said. “We’ve got to

make it better for our kids.” With older students split among three different schools – and with their numbers expected to decline for more than a decade – Pearce said the three schools lacked sufficient interest to offer specialized courses, including trades classes. The lack of those options have exacerbated the problem, as students seeking those courses for graduation enrol in neighbouring districts. Pearce noted that in 2002, 11 advanced placement

courses were being taught. “This district may offer one now,” he said. “That’s ridiculous.” Classes that his school can’t currently offer with only 20 interested students will become viable with a larger student base. Various sports teams have also fallen by the wayside without enough players in the individual schools. In a speech that elicited applause from the crowd, Pearce said he hopes the community can “build something so spectacular that every single one of our kids have what they need.” He said a high school would also allow teachers to teach in their specialties, would allow for more collaboration and innovation among staff, and would create a community hub. With the new school, he said “we can get more out of our children and we can get more out of ourselves.” During the consultation stage, some had suggested the high school should take on grades 9 through 12, while the middle schools should handle students in Grade 6, 7 and 8. Such a move, however, would have forced the closure of up to five elementary schools – including three in rural areas, trustees said Monday. It would also have created two senior high schools, thereby defeating the reconfiguration’s purpose. “The main reason for

Dog’s death prompts call for more signs near pump station Dike is private property Carol Aun MISSION RECORD

A two-year-old labrador retriever was killed last month when it playfully jumped into the Fraser River near the pump station at the end of Hyde Buker Road last month. The current entering the station pulled the dog was the water and through the flood box. When he came out on the other side (Hatzic Lake) he was dead. “We did everything to (try to) save the dog,” said Maria Tiben, who was riding a horse with two friends on the dike in Dewdney while walking seven dogs on Sept. 16. A few dogs who were walking ahead of the group ran

through an open gate to get to the river near the pump station, Tiben said. The women called the dogs back, but two made it into the water. Crawling on a concrete beam above the flood boxes, Tiben and her friend managed to pull one of the dogs out of the water, but they couldn’t reach the yellow lab. The third person with them remained with the horses and the rest of the dogs. “It happened so fast,” said Tiben, who still has nightmares of the incident. Tiben, who has lived in the area for more than 10 years and walks the dike regularly, is calling on the Dewdney Area Improvement

District (DAID) to put up more signs and gates around the area warning others of the danger. “I don’t want this to happen to another animal, or a child,” said Tiben. “There should be a big warning sign there. If I had known that, I wouldn’t go anywhere near there.” “The whole dike is private property,” said DAID’s Larry Wiens, noting the dike is owned by DAID and trespassing continues to be a problem in the area. Wiens said there is a sign on the gate at the parking area advising people the dike is private property, but he knows it is often ignored. “It’s the perfect place to walk dogs.”

The pump station helps drain and maintain water levels at Hatzic Lake. DAID is responsible for maintaining the dikes along the Fraser River from Dewdney Trunk Road and Lougheed Highway in Hatzic to Bell Road in Dewdney. Wiens explained the gate is left open when maintenance work is being done and advised people to stay away from the pump stations in general, and keep dogs and children away from it as well. Wiens said he would look into putting up more signs in the area and will discuss with the DAID board about any additional measures at the next meeting later this month.

Tilbury reported posters to police Coun. Jewell posts YouTube video on issue Carol Aun Mission Record

“Something is very, very wrong” when a candidate for council feels intimidated and rethinks his decision to run, says Mission Coun. Nelson Tilbury. Posters targeting potential Mission council candidate Artur Gryz went up around the Tunbridge Avenue neighbourhood last month. Tilbury reported the incident to police on Sept. 26. “I received a bunch of information regarding a particular incident that happened a couple of weeks ago and I found myself in the RCMP station Friday morning filing a complaint and turning over all the information,” said Tilbury on Monday night during a regular Mission council meeting. Tilbury later told The Record he was “bent out of shape” by the incident, and he left the annual Union of BC Municipality convention in Whistler Thursday night in order to launch a complaint the next day. Tilbury presented police with posts and comments on Facebook regarding the incident, and told them about what he knew. About two hours after leaving the RCMP detachment, Tilbury received a call from police telling him the issue had been resolved. “They didn’t say how it was resolved and I still don’t believe it’s resolved,” said Tilbury. “I can’t believe someone would do this to someone … and deny it.” The posters carried a photo

of Gryz and a message advising not confirm or deny details. doing this is to get a school with a critical mass of 1,200 or so kids so we can offer them programs,” Taylor said. The move was greeted positively by many of those who chose to attend Monday’s board meeting. Online, though, the response was mixed, with commenters on the Record’s website raising questions about

transportation for students, the future of existing senior-led programs at Hatzic and Heritage Park, and the future of junior sports teams of Grade 9 and 10 students. Questions about details were also raised during Monday’s board meeting. Trustees and district staff were unable to answer most, citing the need to officially decide to reconfigure the schools before work-

ing out all the details. Now that Mission secondary has been chosen to house senior students, staff say they will begin to work on the details of the plan, including plans to try and reduce the $1.5 million price tag of the move. To gather input from parents and other community members, the district is planning monthly “think tank” meetings, the first of which will take place

Oct. 29 at a location to be announced. Details will be released on the district’s website, mpsd. ca Similar events will be held to discuss the creation of the two middle schools, including, among other details, catchment area boundaries. Principals for the two middle schools will likely be announced in the coming month, Fletcher said.

QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Decision driven by realities

Any time a board of school trustees make a decision to close a school, or make wholesale changes in grade configurations, it is bound to be unpopular among some parents and students. Such is the case with the Mission school board’s difficult move to reduce the district to a single senior high school, containing all Grade 10, 11 and 12 students. Predictably, a number of parents are voicing concerns about the future logistics of getting their teens to Mission Secondary instead of Heritage or Hatzic, which will become middle schools. Some families are understandably upset that they deliberately moved to a neighbourhood with a senior high, only to learn that will soon not be the case. Those, and others, are legitimate con-

cerns; however, the factors behind this significant change are undeniable. Public school enrolment in Mission has been falling for the past several years. The result of that has been a reduction in the number of advanced and specialty programs including trades that could be offered in the district’s high schools. There simply weren’t enough students to make them feasible. That in turn, meant many youngsters couldn’t get courses that would have been of significant benefit, including academic advantage and job acquisition. Moving all senior high school students to Mission Secondary provides the critical mass necessary to support programs, numerically and financially. This was a tough decision based on some tough realities.

Mission will become a single senior high school district. Do you agree with this decision? To answer, go to the Home page of our website: www.missioncityrecord.com

GETTING OUT OF GOD’S WAY The late writer Flannery O’Connor kept a devotional

journal when she was in her twenties and a student at the Iowa Writers’ Workshop. It has recently been published under the title A Prayer Journal. O’Connor was a fervent Catholic and her journal is filled with interesting reflections on spirituality, as well as writing, which she saw as a way to express her spirituality and hopefully lead others to God. She laments early on that “I do not know you God because I am in the way. Please help me to push myself aside.” Throughout the journal we witness an earnest young woman struggling heroically to be more pious, and striving to get out of God’s way, i.e., how to get rid of the ego and let God fill up the space. Her simultaneous struggle to destroy the ego while seeking literary fame is sometimes the focus of her reflections, as when she says “Don’t let me ever think, dear God, that I was anything but the instrument for Your story, just like the typewriter was mine.” God desires to work through all of us, through our words and our deeds, if we can only get our egos out of His way.

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10

Halloween is a favourite time of year for many, but for the Mission Arts Council it is a way of life. It’s the third year in a row that the MAC has hosted a haunted attraction and this year they’ve partnered with the Mission Raceway Park to present “A Tribute to the Walking Dead.” The haunt will be held at the race track and will encompass many favourite scenes from the Walking Dead TV show, but you don’t need to be a fan of the show to enjoy this scary event – you just have to love the element of surprise. Be prepared to be scared by things that go bump in the night, hands reaching out to grab you and the dead coming to life.

The right fit for you.

The haunt is made possible through many hours of planning and organizing and a cast of dedicated volunteers comprised of high school students earning their volunteer hours for graduation, MAC staff and local citizens. Generous community donations make the elaborate sets and props possible. This event is a fundraiser which directly

supports keeping art alive in the community and offers a venue for local artists and budding actors to come together and create magic. The Haunted Attraction runs from Oct. 17 to 31 from 7-9 p.m. at the Mission Raceway Park. The admission is $10 per person, children 8-13 must be accompanied by an adult and no admittance for children 7 and under.

Step into flexibility. Step into stability. Step into growth. With a complete range of investment options and competitive returns, we have the right term deposit for you.

Talk to us today to learn more.

We want to hear from you. The Mission Division of Family Practice is a group of local doctors committed to improving the delivery of local health care in our community. Team Canada. It’s got a nice ring to it, and for a number of local Mission athletes it’s just become the team they play for. Thanks to a meteoric rise in the rankings over the past few years, as well as an almost flawless performance as Team BC at the Special Olympics Canada 2014 Summer Games in July, the Mission squad was recently appointed to the national team for the upcoming World Games in Los Angeles, Calif. The team is coached by John Scholtes, who will be attending his first World Games after 11 years as head coach. The mixed 10-player roster includes eight players from Mission who range in age from 16-68, and will be competing in the standard five-a-side, 50-minute game format of the Special Olympics. The Mission team is led by Bryce Schaufelberger, who will be competing in his third international tournament after winning a bronze medal with Team Canada in Athens, 2011. Schaufelherger was instrumental in the team’s 3-0-1 domination during the Canada Summer Games, which culminated in a 2-0 victory over Newfoundland and Labrador. According to Scholtes, the best part of the anticipation is “the excitement of the players ... they are really looking forward to it. We never thought we would get this far ... so everything is a bonus to us.” The team will prepare for next summer’s games by training twice a week throughout the winter, as well as participating in several training camps with the Vancouver Whitecaps next spring. In July they will join nearly 7,000 other athletes from 177 countries in the largest Special Olympics World Games ever.

Ford offers four engines and even the smallest 2.7L EcoBoost will still tow up to 3.8 tonnes. The cab is quieter, yet larger. The floor is flat yet has more storage compartments. The dash is less cluttered yet offers more information. Do you sense a theme here? Consider that the design phase of this truck took four years and the testing was the most intense ever. The result? A list of improvements a hockey rink long – that’s a fact. Now, how will they all work together? Well Ford’s claims will have to play out on roads, across Canada, in the coming years. But from what I’ve seen in Texas, I’d say Giddy Up!

The truck is nimbler, has less wash in the corners and simply handles better. The cab is virtually silent and for comfort, the HVAC is split side-toside, front and rear. The hood and side windows have dropped in profile for better visibility, while the size, colours and quality of the computer generated gauges and controls simplifies operation while driving. I towed with the new truck and its manners are good if not improved. In part, this is assisted by the long list of towing features like trailer sway control; tow/haul mode; Dynamic Hitch Assist, SelectShift transmission and better tow mirrors. City of light shines brightly on dream machines Sidestepping the current design approach of angular shapes with hard edges, this new Lambo has a more curvaceous look that almost mimics a front engine car. What is wedged in the

middle of this exotic is a hybrid system that marries a naturally aspirated 5.2L V10 engine with three electric motors (Two in the front producing all wheel drive and another in the transmission for full electric drive capability), producing a whopping 910hp with acceleration that will see this car run to 100 km in just three seconds. The Asterion is capable of running on just electric power for roughly 30 km, providing silent driving in a wickedly sexy machine. This is a just a concept at this point but with mounting pressure on car makers to reduce carbon output and the fact the Porsche brand (Another VW Group brand) already has the 918 hybrid, this looks like it could make it to market within the next few years. VW Golf Alltrack Ok, now back to earth. With the trend towards allwheel-drive (AWD) gaining more and more momentum it was only a matter of time before cars previously without AWD start to appear with this option. Take the popular VW Golf wagon, soon to be available in Europe with AWD and a slightly higher ground clearance. Called the Alltrack, this more rugged-looking and capable VW will certainly appeal to buyers of the Subaru Outback or Audi Allroad. In North America, we don’t buy many wagons but we certainly love when manufacturers add a slightly higher ride-height, lower body cladding plus AWD and call them a crossover vehicle. Sales jump. Not available in Canada but after chatting with VW Canada executives, they have put in a request to Germany to get this car for our AWD-loving climate. Stay tuned. Toyota i-Road Imagine a pure electric, three-wheel, scooter-like vehicle, with a fixed roof, steering wheel which can drive up to 45km/h with 50km of electric range. The Toyota i-Road attracted big crowds when it was demonstrated at this year’s Paris Show. The small wheel at the rear of the i-Road pivots at low speed for amazing maneuverability, plus when driven at higher speeds the entire vehicle tilts over like a motorcycle with the front wheels rotating independently of each other. It looks odd and must feel odd to drive but the upside is covered driving, without

A glimpse of what’s to come in North America It has been over ten years since Volvo introduced the original XC90 and the years have not been good to this vehicle or the brand. Sales for the XC90 and Volvo in

Fiat 500X general have been pathetic in North America. The XC90 will be sold in Canada with AWD in the T6 or T8 engine variants. Both are

market but expect to see the 170hp 1.4 turbo 4-cylinder and the 184hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engines here. The Fiat 500L has not been a hit for Fiat but, yet again, add a more rugged look and the sales will likely follow. Volvo XC90 Will the introduction of an all-new, full-size XC90 SUV be enough to save Volvo here in North America? Time will tell but the crowds at the Volvo stand in Paris were packed with people combing over every part of this attractive SUV.

turbocharged and supercharged and are matched to an 8-speed automatic. The T6 has 320hp and the T8 comes with an additional 80hp electric motor for improved power and efficiency. The three-row design remains intact but the interior is larger for more space. The dash is a standout with a vertical iPad-like application in the centre for class-leading connectivity and usability. The price of the T6 will start at $60,700 and the T8 will start at $73,400. a helmet, and emissions free transportation. The i-Road is being tested in Japan and will be used in the French city of Grenoble as part of a vehicle-sharing program. This type of vehicle already exists in Europe but the tilting and pivoting elements make it unique. This would not be popular on our wider roads in North America but the i-Road will fit right in on Europe’s busy streets. Fiat 500X The Chrysler Groups’ parent company Fiat is at it again, taking the best that its European brands have to offer and marrying them with American brands. The Fiat 500L has had a mild reception here in North America so now they have taken the same platform and produced the Jeep Renegade. To complete the circle, the same Renegade approach is being used with this Fiat 500X, basically, taking the same Jeep-like elements and making them into a Fiat. The 500X will be

available with front wheel drive (FWD) or AWD and a variety of engine and transmission options in Europe. The engine choices have not been divulged for our

Bill Barnes will share his “secret sauce” used to help some of the world’s largest companies and organizations succeed on-line. Small Business can use the same techniques, with a Small Business budget. Bill Barnes is a pioneer of Digital Marketing. As co-founder of Enquiro, one of the world’s foremost authorities in Search Marketing and User Behaviour Research, Bill helped both Google and Yahoo understand how

people use their search engines. Enquiro was named one of Profit Magazines fastest growing companies in Canada, three years in a row and noted as Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500 for North America. Bill has been a featured speaker at the largest Search and Digital marketing conferences in North America. “Everybody is welcome here,” said Bethan Lane, English Tarts co-owner. And you know that when you walk through the door and see such a varied clientele. You also see an eclectic olderworld collection of furniture, tea pots and cups and saucers alongside modern glass-domed goody keepers filled with freshly baked cakes, scones, and yes, tarts. In addition to the pastries and coffee or teas, patrons enjoy lunch-time fare such as quiche, sandwiches and home-made soup.

“We work hard to source all our ingredients locally and make everything on site, from scratch,” said Ruth Janes, Bethan’s business partner and friend. If they can’t source a product locally, they shop in Mission’s grocery stores so they keep the local economy humming. The English Tarts made its brickand-mortar debut in April 2013. Before that, Bethan and Ruth sold their baking at the Mission City Farmers Market. “We saved all the money we made at the market and used it to set up shop downtown,” explained Ruth. Most small businesses can’t afford to have a team of specialists on hand to help deal with unexpected problems that require an expert opinion. The Chambers Plan Business Assistance Service (BAS) helps fill this gap. BAS was added to every Chambers Plan firm earlier this year, at no additional cost, providing owners help to manage their business and their employees. This confidential service

provides business owners access to professional accounting, counseling, legal and human resource experts who understand the challenges small business owners face. Included is a confidential telephone coaching service to help owners address a wide range of challenging people issues, including performance management, absenteeism, conflict and difficult behavior. In addition, a confidential

referral program helps employees get back on track and back to work, through face-to-face counseling with a trained professional. Arete® manages a national network of professionals, ready to assist you and your employees, and a toll-free call will put you in touch with a trained specialist that will identify how best to help you.

Behind-the-Scenes Activity is Bringing World-Class Technical Centre to Mission’s Downtown As we all know, agriculture is important to the Fraser Valley and agricultural technology is a growing and important element of that sector. Still mostly vacant, the recently purchased building in Mission’s downtown gives no hint of the behind-the-scenes activity that will soon bring it to life as a world class Technical Centre of Excellence (TCE) for emerging agricultural tech companies. But in fact there is a lot going on. The economic and social benefits to Mission are just around the corner. Consider the following: Mission’s TCE (Technical Centre of Excellence) will provide accommodation and mentoring for emerging and incubator high tech businesses. 12 companies have already expressed interest. The facility will require an anchor tenant to help defray leasing costs and provide mentoring. That anchor tenant has signed a memorandum of

understanding, and is scheduled to occupy the building in the New Year. A proposal to obtain major operating funding for the Centre has been submitted to the British Columbia Innovation Council. Final approval is expected any day. Plans are also underway to create a venture fund that will give access to capital locally. As a recognized regional initiative letters of support have been received from Mission, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Invest North Fraser partners, Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows. Mission’s Riverside College is also on board. A plan is in place to renovate the building to accommodate its new uses, and renovation work will commence very shortly. ACETech, the Vancouver based training organization for CEOs of technology, life sciences, and innovative companies, held an

inaugural evening meeting in Mission on September 18th to highlight the initiative. Many of the brightest and best tech CEO’s from Coquitlam east where in attendance for this groundbreaking even that featured “The Metronome Effect” author

Leila (Lee) Kathleen Leck died peacefully on October 5, 2014 at Abbotsford Hospital. She was born March 31, 1921 in Brandon, Manitoba to Dr. H. O. and Margaret Galloway McDiarmid. Lee attended schools in Brandon before graduating from the University of Manitoba in 1942 with a Bachelor of Science Home Economics degree. She was then a student Dietitian at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. A short working career as a Dietitian in the Brandon General Hospital and the Hudson’s Bay in Vancouver followed. On September 13, 1947 Lee married Ronald Henry Leck of Vancouver. He was her beloved husband and best friend for over 65 years, until his death in 2012. She is survived by her four children, Noreen, Harris (Fran), Margaret, Chris (Shelley) and was Nana to 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Leila (to her immediate family) was predeceased by Ron and her siblings Bud, Nina, Jack and Mona and her much loved son-in-law Neil Van Duffelen. There are many nieces and nephews, and it was this extended family which brought great meaning to her life. Because of this love of family, Lee became a dedicated Genealogist and compiled three family histories. Volunteering was important to her, especially at the Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg where she became President of the Guild. She loved the years spent in the Mission Community Archives and the friends made there. Ron and Lee lived in Mission for 32 years before moving to be with their daughter Margaret and grandson Jesse. A Celebration of Life and reception will be held at Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home on October 17, 2014 at 1:00 pm. No flowers please. Instead, Lee asks that you do a favour for someone and smile at everyone you meet. Pay it forward. Lee will be missed by her family and friends and will be remembered as a loving and compassionate woman. Special thanks to the wonderful workers from Fraser Valley Home Support whose care allowed Lee to remain at home. Thank you also to Dr. Danescu and the staff at the ARHCC for their wonderful care on numerous hospital admissions. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at: www.woodlawnfh-mission.com Arrangements entrusted to Woodlawn Mission Funeral Home (604) 826-9548

McKECHNIE Eileen Mary Nov. 13, 1917 ~ Sept. 29, 2014

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our Mom. Eileen was predeceased by her husband Ken, in 2001, her daughter Jean in 1999, and her daughter-in-law Joanne in 2012. She leaves behind her sons Wes and Robert McKechnie, daughters Mary (Doug ) MacDonald and Doris (Randy) Mutch, grandchildren Jim (Jan), Janice (Paul), Jackee (Darrell), Julie (Davin), Peter (Janet), Bob (Crystal), Carla (Dean), great grandchildren Jacob, Trent, Aaron, Raven, Chayla, Kazuki, Kenta and Logan, her sister Margret and sister-in-law Hazel, also many nieces and nephews. Eileen was born in Weyburn SK and moved to BC at the young age of 3. She lived in the Fraser Valley until 1965 when the family moved to Caycuse. In 1977 Ken and Eileen moved back to the family home in Dewdney. Mom and Dad spent their time after retirement, enjoying family visits, traveling, gardening and playing endless hours of cards. In 2001 she moved to Lake Cowichan to be closer to family. She was there 10 years until her failing health forced a move to Chemainus. Mom was a beautiful lady inside and out. She was a very kind and gentle soul who loved to laugh. She dedicated her life to her family and has left us with wonderful memories. She will be missed dearly. “Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves”. We would like to thank all the workers at the Chemainus Health Care Center for the wonderful care you gave our Mom in her final years. There will be no service at her request. The family will gather at a later date, to honor and celebrate our Mom’s life. FIRST MEMORIAL FUNERAL SERVICES (250) 748-2134, Duncan, BC Condolences may be shared online at www.mem.com

Wynia-Zandberg Marie Anna (nee Attema) Our dear mother, grandmother (Beppe) and great grandmother passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 29, 2014 in her 85th year at Heritage Village, Chilliwack, BC. She will be lovingly remembered by five children: Dick (Peggy) Wynia, John (Carol) Wynia, Ann (Darryl) Wallis, Theresa (John) Staber, and Bettyanne (Mark) Cheng; 13 grandchildren: Kyle Wynia, Tai Wynia, Sjon Wynia, Josh Wynia, Kandace Batz, Kris Wallis, Kurtis Wallis, Luke Staber, Madison Heglund, Tayler Rudeloff, Georgia Rudeloff, Nathan Cheng, Kira Cheng; six great grandchildren; and by her sisters Lies Harkema, Annie Hoekema, and brother Jelle Attema. She was predeceased by her husbands Joe Wynia (1980) and Dirk Zandberg (2005), daughter Marlene (Chuck) Rudeloff (2009), grandson Jes Staber (1996) and great granddaughter Shea Staber (2005). Marie was born March 1, 1929 in Makkum, Friesland, Netherlands. She married her sweetheart Joe in 1949 and after the birth of their first born son, they boldly embarked on a journey to Canada where they first settled in Sylvan Lake, Alberta in 1950. Mom and Dad were proud to become Canadian citizens in 1957. British Columbia eventually became their home when they moved to Harrison Hot Springs in 1974. Marie married Dirk Zandberg in 1982 and together they resided in Abbotsford and Chilliwack. Mom was a playful, adventurous lady who loved to laugh and travel. A heartfelt thank you goes to the staff at Heritage Village residential care home who lovingly cared for Mom in the frailty of her last days. Funeral service to be held 11:30 am, Saturday, October 11th at Henderson’s in Chilliwack.

STARKEY Bernice (nee Lewichew) Aug. 7, 1930 ~ Sept. 24, 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother, nana and great-nana. Bernice passed away peacefully with family at her side at Tabor Home on September 24, 2014. She is predeceased by her loving husband Bruce Starkey of almost 56 years and her sister Pauline. She will be lovingly remembered by her 3 children Colleen (Don), Heather (Paul), and Sydney (Janet), 9 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Prior to her long battle with Alzheimer’s, Bernice enjoyed travelling and camping. She was a spirited fashion diva who lit up the dance floor at social events with her many close friends. Bernice and her husband Bruce shared quiet moments together each day with their favorite past time… “Happy hour.” As Bernice was never considered a culinary expert, many wonderful family events were celebrated with KFC. The family of Bernice wish to thank the staff at Tabor Home for their compassionate care of “Mom” over the many years. At Mom’s request there will be no service. Online condolences to the family may be made at:
