The former Belmont student, perhaps best known as the student activist who spearheaded a grassroots campaign to convince Sooke School District to replace the aging facility, is knocking on doors, talking to voters and going to all-candidates meetings leading up to his big day, Nov. 15. That’s also the day he hopes to be elected to a school trustee position for SD62. Parmar, in his third year studying political science at the Univer-

sity of Victoria, is trying to connect with voters of all ages, including those who don’t have children going to school. “I’m reaching out to people I graduated with that are now 18 and older that are voting age, (some) that are voting for the first time,” he said. “I’m hoping to get them excited about voting for a school trustee, because we set the visions at the schools. We want to create a school system that is positive

five years down the line, 10 years down the line, when my generation starts to have children.” The young Langford resident understands some people might get hung up on his political inexperience, yet he is confident he can get the job done in the SD62 Belmont zone, serving Langford, Metchosin, Colwood and the Highlands. “The skills I learned in UVic are going to help me be a good school trustee if I get elected,” Parmar

The students in Dunsmuir middle school’s life skills class could barely keep still with excitement as they received a cheque for $1,000 on Tuesday for their hardworking recycling efforts. The Return-It program

tracks how many bottles and cans each school recycles and awards first, second and third prizes for small, medium and large-sized schools. This year, Dunsmuir won top spot in the middle category for a second time. Encorp, the parent recycling company, hands out the awards after the school year ends and Island schools get an extra bonus. “The Island actually does a fantastic job of recycling,” said Kelly Gorman, operations manager for the Bottle Depot.

“So we decided that any school that won here, we would match what they won.” Gorman was on hand to present the cheque to the Colwood school’s life skills class on Tuesday. “It’s great to come back,” she said with a smile. With their previous award, the life skills class purchased three sturdy recycling bins for the school, as well as gloves and supplies for the kids who volunteer to sort through cans and piles of paper. “This year we’re hoping to set up a greenhouse to teach the

kids how to grow some of their own food,” said Erin Larson, one of the life skills teachers. The vegetables grown could then be used in their foods class, she added, where the students learn how to prepare healthy, balanced meals. “We also do a big shop for the local food bank every Christmas.” The class will also likely purchase one more recycling bin for the school in their ongoing efforts to make being green as easy as ABC. acowan@goldstreamgazette.com

Bird watchers of all levels are welcome to join CRD Regional Parks guest naturalist Geoffrey Newell on a free guided walk this Saturday (Oct. 11) at Witty’s Lagoon Regional Park to learn about native ocean birds. The group will look for gulls, cormorants, loons, grebes and sea ducks in their winter plumage. A spotting scope will be on hand, but visitors are also encouraged to bring their own binoculars or scope if available. Participants are asked to meet at the Tower Point parking lot off Olympic View Drive at 9 a.m. Take Metchosin Road to Duke Road East and drive down to Olympic View Drive. Three youths arrested after Goldstream Ave. home invasion RCMP suspect armed home invasion targeted Arnold Lim News staff

Three West Shore youths are facing charges of assault, robbery with a weapon and robbery with a disguise. West Shore RCMP received a call at 8:20 a.m. from a residence on the 1100-block of Goldstream Ave. reporting a home invasion. RCMP said three masked suspects entered, produced knives

and assaulted a 60-year-old male before fleeing on foot. The Saanich Police Department K9 Unit joined the RCMP to investigate the area and eventually located and arrested two males near the Trans Canada Highway at Goldstream Ave. after receiving calls from the public about individuals transiting through the area and running through their yards. “Our belief at this time is it was a targeted situation, and these situations we take very seriously,” said Cpl. Kathy Rochlitz of the West Shore RCMP. “We are very happy a call for assistance came in at 8:20 a.m. and by 8:45

a.m. we had two in people in custody.” A third suspect turned themselves into the West Shore RCMP detachment and remains in custody at this time. “What also assisted is (that) the public called with locations of the suspects, so that helped us greatly,” Rochlitz continued. “We always encourage the public to report suspicious activity and that is what happened in this case.” Three suspects between the ages of 16-17 years old remain in custody. Most ‘dangerous’ trees removed from Blinkhorn Angela Cowan News Gazette staff

Though the aftermath of the Mt. Blinkhorn blaze has settled down, Metchosin fire crews are still keeping an eye on the fallout from the fire, specifically, monitoring ‘danger’ trees. “When trees die, they become danger trees, and there’s a chance the fire may have killed some trees,” said fire chief

Stephanie Dunlop. A ‘danger’ tree is a tree that has the potential to be lifethreatening by risk of falling, she explained. Dunlop said B.C. Forestry crews took down five trees soon after the fire that had an immediate threat of falling, and noted that there is still one tree that’s been flagged at the top of the mountain. “There is absolutely no public

access to the top of Blinkhorn though,” she added. “Anyone who is trying to get up there would basically have to trespass on private property.” Though the fire department believes all underground fires have been put out, root fires are particularly hard to detect. The longtime educator believes the 19-year-old will continue to do so. “I know (their family) came from not a lot, (yet) he has taken the bull by the horns and really wants to succeed. He thinks politics is a noble calling,” Waterlander said. “He was political even when he was in class, which is rare, because most teenagers don’t care too much about politics. I know he is guided by doing good for as many people as possible. He had to give back and wants to help.” Parmar was the lead organizer for Let’s Build a New Belmont in 2011, which saw a stu-

dent walkout staged and more than 3,000 signatures collected, as he and others voiced their opinions about the need for a new high school. Parmar eventually secured a one-on-one meeting with then-minister of education George Abbott and eight months later, the government announced the funding of a new Belmont secondary, one Parmar won’t get the opportunity to attend. “I saw a leader there … He did not need any adult guidance, he took everything right off and didn’t need help,” Waterlander said. “It wouldn’t surprise me if (one day) we are calling him prime minister Parmar.” Weeks away from election day,

the school trustee hopeful said his focus is on engagement with constituents. He relishes the opportunity to serve in that role and prove his age isn’t the factor some may make it out to be. “Those who know me know I am most passionate and most driven when I have a lot of things going on,” Parmar said. “Most are too busy partying and enjoying the things of being a teen and young adults, but I enjoy going to board meetings rather than partying with my friends.” Election day for the Sooke School District is Nov. 15 and is held in conjunction with municipal council elections. alim@goldstreamgazette.com

Lifelong Girl Guide gives back Trudine Wilson has mentored generations of young girls Arnold Lim News staff

Trudine Wilson is proof positive that guiding is for life. The Colwood resident is still a leader in the same Colwood hall, for the same organization, wearing the same level of commitment and pride on her chest despite more than 50 years of service to the Girl Guides. Her dedication to the principles and

youth she serves hasn’t changed since she entered the program as a Brownie in 1962. “It is just a great atmosphere to become you, to find out what you are all about and how the world of women can all work together,” she said. “Guiding and Brownies made me realize we are all (equals)... It’s great for girls to be girls and learn what women’s rights are in the world and how much a woman can do.” Despite more than five decades of service that led to her receiving an honourary lifetime membership in 2007, the retired secretary still works tirelessly planning and organizing

events and leading by example for generations of new guides. She said often the smiles on children’s faces are the best reward for the commitment and energy she is so happy to give. “I really like it, I enjoy planning things for an event for the girls and seeing their smiling faces in the end. It is those smiles that make you realize you are doing a job where you are always being thanked (with happiness).” She said giving back to the community that has given her so much and the passing on of knowledge and empowerment to the young children who come through the ranks has kept her motivated throughout the many years. “Being a leader means I have had such a great life with so many people and it keeps me young,” she said. “It is the sharing of what I know for the girls, and the girls giving back to girls... Sitting down with a lady that has been guided for 65 years and hearing her stories makes me realize it has brought so many people joy.” She hopes young Girl Guides continue to come and participate in the camaraderie she values so much and said she still holds so dear. “No matter how old you are, you are still a Girl Guide. Whether we are here with the young girls sitting down making pies or out with the senior Guides camping we are all the same,” she said. “It is the sisterhood that is there and the sisterhood never leaves.... Be grateful for what you have As we head into the Thanksgiving long weekend, we often consider the things we can feel grateful for in our lives. Watching news reports of late relaying chaos in far-flung locales, living in a comparatively safer environment would seem to be high on many of our lists. While some disagree with the Canadian government’s decision to use military aggression to battle ISIS, we can feel comforted that we at least live in a country where such a decision went to a vote in the House of Commons. We can be thankful that in the daylight hours we are able to walk safely down virtually any street in the cities and towns of the Capital Region, without fear of bombs raining down or thugs accosting us with weapons. With municipal elections nearing, we can be thankful for the ability to cast our ballot for the local politicians of our choice, rather than living in a state where residents have little to no chance of participating in a democratic vote. We can choose to give thanks as we sit down to a pleasurable meal, and voice gratitude for the bountiful harvest and the hard work that allows such food to be put on the table. At the same time we can acknowledge the struggles of the families and individuals who aren’t blessed with the same good fortune. On the West Shore specifically, we can choose to support the Goldstream Food Bank in its efforts to provide low-income families and those in poverty a Thanksgiving meal that is a little more special than the everyday fare, which sometimes isn’t much at all. Our far-better-than-average quality drinking water, often placed on that Thanksgiving table, should be included on the gratefulness list. One need not travel far to find a municipal water supply stocked with chemicals to make the liquid drinkable. Having been comfortable walking around in shirtsleeves or shorts this week, some gratefulness for our pleasant October weather might have flashed across people’s minds. For many people, being close to family for the weekend or even just for dinner is at the forefront of their minds. Those in the armed forces can appreciate how special that can be. So, take some time, this weekend and any time, to find things you can be grateful for. It’s a good exercise that can inspire positive feelings and carry you through those grey days of fall and winter.

Leaders of some of the world’s largest corporations are calling for climate action and carbon pricing, and distancing themselves from organizations that have worked to stall progress. Even the heirs of the Rockefeller Standard Oil fortune announced they’ll withdraw their investments in fossil fuels, including the Alberta oil sands. With the Blue Dot Tour, the David Suzuki Foundation and I are hoping to encourage all Canadians to become part of this growing movement to protect the air, water, soil and biodiversity that we and our children and grandchildren need to survive and be healthy. Like nature, social movements sometimes take time to evolve and unfold. We don’t always see their impacts as they happen. If we expect a dazzling blur of activity and immediate results, we’ll be disappointed. Let’s slow down, breathe, listen, look and feel. Only then will we understand our place in the world and what we must do to live well on this small blue dot spinning in an enormous universe.

For a second straight year, rugby fans can see some of Canada’s top talents in action at the Americas Rugby Championship starting tomorrow (Oct. 11) at Westhills Stadium. Team Canada, an assemblage of the country’s top domestic players – those not playing professionally overseas – takes on Uruguay in 15s play at 4:30 p.m., following a 2:30 p.m. match between the U.S.A. and Argentina. “The ARC is a talent identifying tournament,” says Bryan Kelly, Rugby Canada national teams spokesperson. “Guys from this team will be selected to play on tour with the senior team (leading up to) the World Cup next year in the U.K.” Some of the players wearing the red and white in ARC matches Oct. 11, 15 and 19 at Westhills will be familiar to local rugby watchers. More than a

dozen play regularly in the CDI Direct Insurance B.C. Premier League, the hotbed of rugby in this province. The league has three teams: James Bay, Castaway-Wanderers and the University of Victoria, contesting matches locally. Scrum half Jamie Mackenzie, who plays for the UVic Vikes and is playing in his third ARC – and second in Langford – says having local fans cheer on the national team is a major boost for the players. “Personally, I’m just excited to be playing at a higher level than we usually get to play together as a group. But another really exciting part is playing in front of the crowd at Langford,” he says. “The support was amazing last year. It gives all the boys that extra little boost at the end of the game when we’re tired.” Speaking of getting tired, the teams will play three matches in eight days, a rather punishing schedule considering B.C. Premier League teams play once a week. “It’s quite tough on the body, but we’ve got a great training staff who work with us,” Mackenzie says of his past experiences. “After the game it’s all about recovery, getting the right food in and managing your body. It’s definitely a bit of a grind, but

it’s so exciting and so fun you’re not really thinking about those kinds of things at the time.” From a competitive standpoint, Team Canada will be disappointed if they don’t come away with three wins, he says, adding that perennial ARC champ Argentina is expected to give them their toughest game. Head coach Kieran Crowley and his staff will be watching their players closely during the tournament. Their performance can help them secure a selection to Team Canada for the monthlong European tour which heads out three days after the last ARC game. The tour will see Canada play national sides in Wales, England, France and Romania. “The ARC is a pretty big stepping stone toward the level where you’re playing full international matches,” Mackenzie says. “It’s pretty big for guys who maybe haven’t (been capped) before.” Last year’s matches at Westhills attracted large crowds and this year is expected to be much the same. Foot races cause road closures Sunday morning This Sunday’s Goodlife Fitness Victoria Marathon will cause widespread road closures in many parts of Victoria. The 42.2-kilometre marathon route will start in downtown Victoria on Menzies Street and wind through the downtown core into James Bay and Beacon Hill Park, along Dallas Road to Gonzales Bay. It will proceed into Fairfield, Oak Bay and Uplands before the turnaround. The route then returns the same way. There will be a loop at the Lawndale/ Cowichan area for a turnaround point for the half-marathon. Some small residential roadways on the route will be closed for various periods of time. Anyone living in the area south of McNeill Avenue, east of Foul

Bay Avenue and west of Oliver Street and need to cross the marathon route in their vehicle, may do so on Foul Bay Road at McNeill Avenue. The dash is less cluttered yet offers more information. Do you sense a theme here? Consider that the design phase of this truck took four years and the testing was the most intense ever. The result? A list of improvements a hockey rink long – that’s a fact. Now, how will they all work together? Well Ford’s claims will have to play out on roads, across Canada, in the coming years. But from what I’ve seen in Texas, I’d say Giddy Up!

Kia has an Electric Soul By Bob McHugh

Kia joins the growing list of electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers with Soul EV, a clever adaptation of its tall 5-door compact with the funky styling. Although still a small slice of the overall car market, EV sales are growing rapidly and so is the public charge station infrastructure that’s crucial to its success, especially in urban areas. A digital readout showed 187 km of driving range available as we headed out on a test loop around Metro Vancouver. And after about 30 minutes of, no special treatment, driving with frequent stops, starts, hill climbs and descents, the Soul EV showed 162 km was still available. That's relevant, as the Soul EV’s officially rated driving range is 149 km. In addition to being quiet and fuel-free, Soul EV effectively matches the practical user features of its gasoline counterpart. It can seat 4 to 5 passengers and has the same large rear cargo area. Kia's polymer (electrolyte) lithium ion battery pack is compact and easier to hide than others, as is can be molded into different shapes. In Soul EV it's centrally fitted under the seats and a raised rear floor pan. The gasoline engine is replaced by a 109 horsepower liquid-cooled AC synchronous permanent magnet electric motor that can generate a whopping

210 lb-ft of torque. That's 59 lb-ft more than the 2.0-litre gasoline engine version of Soul. Standing starts were not as jumpy as other electric vehicles tend to be and the overall performance of the electric drivetrain was impressively smooth. Charger ports for the battery pack are hidden behind a hinged cover in the front grille. The smaller port accepts either a 120 volt (level 1) or a 240 volt (level2) charge connector. A portable level 1 unit is stored in the vehicle and Kia Canada will also provide Soul EV buyers with a level 2 charge unit (made by Bosch) for home installation, free of charge. The charger unit can also be used to pre-heat or pre-cool the Soul EV, while plugged into the grid. You can also program it to start or complete charging at a certain time. The level 1 charger plugs into any electrical outlet, but can take up to 24-hours to fully recharge the w battery pack. A level 2 charger (with 30 amp service) cuts the maximum recharge time to under

5-hours. And a level 3 fast charge station can pump-in an 80 per cent charge in less than 30 minutes. We didn’t take it out on the freeway, but the Soul EV seemed very stable (it’s heavier then the gas engine Soul) and Kia claims a top speed of 145 km/hour. Kia also claims that it can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/hour faster (by 4 seconds) than a Nissan Leaf. It’s agile and peppy, with lots of initial get up and go, but it’s also no dragster. The two-tone gray interior theme came with attractive and contrasting blue stitching. Extensive use of bio-friendly interior materials also makes Soul EV the most eco-friendly vehicle made by Kia. It feature materials derived from organic substances such as sugar cane, corn, cellulose, and wood powder. Soul EV is only available through selected Kia dealers in major Canadian urban centres (Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver). Unlike Quebec and Ontario, however, BC’s incentive program for eco-friendly vehicles ran out of cash back in March of this year. Soul EV does qualify for an $8,000 federal government rebate and that certainly helps make the purchase price more palatable. The Kia Soul EV definitely rocks and is a must-drive for anyone considering an EV in this price range.

Paris, France – The Paris Auto Show is one of those must-visit events for those of us charged with reporting on the latest and greatest new vehicles. So many manufacturers now develop products for a world market so these early European shows often offer a glimpse of what’s coming next to our shores. Here are five machines that caught my eye.

Let’s start with a dream machine. The Lamborghini Asterion concept car was certainly a showstopper.

Sidestepping the current design approach of angular shapes with hard edges, this new Lambo has a more curvaceous look that almost mimics a front engine car. What is wedged in the middle of this exotic is a hybrid system that marries a naturally aspirated 5.2L V10 engine with three electric motors (Two in the front producing all wheel drive and another in the transmission for full electric drive capability), producing a whopping 910hp with acceleration that will see this car run to 100km in just three seconds. The Asterion is capable of running on just electric power for roughly 30km and, providing silent driving in a wickedly sexy machine. This is a just a concept at this point but with

mounting pressure on car makers to reduce carbon output and the fact the Porsche brand (Another VW Group brand) already has the 918 hybrid, this looks like it could make it to market within the next few years.

VW Golf Alltrack

Ok, now back to earth. With the trend towards all-wheel-drive (AWD) gaining more and more momentum it was only a matter of time before cars previously without AWD start to appear with this option. Take the popular VW Golf wagon, soon to be available in Europe with AWD and a slightly higher ground clearance. Called the Alltrack, this more rugged

wagons but we certainly love when manufacturers add a slightly higher ride-height, lower body cladding plus AWD and call them a crossover vehicle. Sales jump. Not available in Canada but after chatting with VW Canada executives, they have put in a request to Germany to get this car for our AWD-loving climate. Stay tuned.

Imagine a pure electric, three-wheel, scooter-like vehicle, with a fixed roof, steering wheel and can drive up to 45km/h with 50km of electric range. The Toyota i-Road attracted big crowds when it was demonstrated at this year’s Paris Show. The small wheel at the rear of the i-Road pivots at low speed for amazing maneuverability, plus when driven at higher speeds the entire vehicle tilts over like a motorcycle with the front wheels rotating independently of each other. It looks odd and must feel odd to drive but the upside is covered driving, without a helmet, and emissions free transportation. The i-Road is being tested in Japan and will be used in the French city of Grenoble as part of a vehicle-sharing program. This type of vehicle already exists in Europe but the tilting and pivoting elements make it unique. This would not be popular on our wider roads in North America but the i-Road will fit right in on Europe’s busy streets.

The Chrysler Groups’ parent company Fiat is at it again, taking the best that its European brands have to offer and marrying them with American brands. The Fiat 500L has had a mild reception here in North America so now they have taken the same platform and produced the Jeep Renegade. To complete the circle, the same Renegade approach is being used with this Fiat 500X, basically, taking the same Jeep-like elements and making them into a Fiat. The 500X will be available with front wheel drive (FWD) or AWD and a variety of engine and transmission options in Europe. The engine choices have not been divulged for our market but expect to see the 170hp 1.4 turbo 4-cylinder and the 184hp 2.4L 4-cylinder engines here. The Fiat 500L has not been a hit for Fiat but, yet again, add a more rugged look and the sales will likely follow.

Volvo XC90

Will the introduction of an all-new, full-size XC90 SUV be enough to save Volvo here in North America? Time will tell but the crowds at the Volvo stand in Paris were packed with people combing over every pert of this attractive SUV. It has been over ten years since Volvo introduced the original XC90 and the years have not been good to this vehicle or the brand. Sales for the XC90 and Volvo in general have been pathetic in North America. This new XC90 has a lot going for it and Volvo hopes it will help revive the brand. The XC90 will be sold in Canada with AWD in the T6 or T8 engine variants. Both are turbocharged and supercharged and are matched to an 8-speed automatic. The T6 has 320hp and the T8 comes with an additional 80hp electric motor for improved power and efficiency. The three-row design remains intact but the interior is larger for more space. The dash is a standout with a vertical iPad-like application in the centre for class-leading connectivity and usability. The price of the T6 will start at $60,700 and the T8 will start at $73,400. Contrary to general perception, most classic cars aren’t fragile flowers. In fact, many are anvil-tough, particularly American cars of the 1950s and 1960s, built with real Pennsylvania steel and very little plastic. But even these rolling bank vaults can be seriously screwed up by these five things: Non-use: This one is really is counterintuitive. When classic cars come to mind for many, the image of the trailer queen or museum piece looms large; in fact, most people think that these are the best cared-for cars. In actuality, they often turn out to be the most problematic cars when they are finally driven. Non-use is actually abuse — seals dry out and start to leak; gas gets stale and turns to varnish; batteries corrode when not removed; and tires get flat spots. Cars that are used and maintained on a regular basis, on the other hand, are often the happiest and most reliable old cars. Improper storage/rodents: This goes along with the above. Failure to drain fuel or use a stabilizer, not using jack stands, and making certain that anti-freeze is up to snuff all contribute to storage-related deterioration. But perhaps the most destructive force has four teeth and a naked tail — rats and mice, the same rodents that wiped out half the population of Europe by carrying Bubonic plague, can really mess with your classic car. They chew upholstery and insulation to make nests (in which they pee, poop and reproduce, not necessarily in that order), and worst of all, they chew on wiring harnesses where it isn’t apparent until something smokes or catches fire from behind the dash of your 1965 Mustang. Road Salt: Most everyone who has taken chemistry knows that the reaction between Sodium Chloride and steel yields iron oxide, more commonly known as rust. But few people truly realize how quickly the damage is done. Just one drive on a wet salty road will give your classic an ugly coating of surface rust on anything on the underside that is not well protected, like suspension parts, exhaust and even the frame. A season or two that lets salty mud penetrate the nooks and crannies of your car will almost certainly cause visible rust to erupt. And don’t think you’re immune because your car is fiberglass, there’s plenty of steel to rot away under the pretty plastic panels of your 1972 Corvette Stingray. Conversely, getting caught in the rain every now and then isn’t death for your classic, as long as nothing like carpets or trunk mats get soaked and stay wet. Some of the cleanest and most rust-free old cars we’ve seen come from the damp Pacific Northwest, where it snows little and road salt isn’t used. Old Tires: Most vintage cars don’t see 15,000 miles of use each year and, often, totally unsafe tires can look deceptively sound. In addition to tread wear, age, dry rot, flat spots and UV exposure can render tires unsafe. About six or seven years should be tops in terms of tire life, regardless of how the tires may look. A blowout or a thrown tread can not only threaten your life, it can severely damage your car severely as I found out first hand when an otherwise fine-looking tire threw a tread and put a football-sized dent in the lower quarter panel of a formerly pristine 1977 Datsun 280Z. Bad driving habits: The list of things that you can do to shorten the life of the major systems of a classic — from engine, transmission to differential — is long and beyond the scope of this article. But perhaps the most destructive thing you can do to a vintage car is to not let it warm up properly. I’ve witnessed tons of people who should know better start up a cold car and immediately zing it to the redline with the first shift. It’s painful to watch and even more painful to realize the harm that’s being done to the engine. The peace and music that backs the annual Special Woodstock festival also drove the world’s most-famous rock festival 45 years ago. Langford resident Shelley Vaags, the Duncan event’s founder, was thrilled to hear recently that Special Woodstock had received the official blessing of the New York-based owners of the Woodstock name to use the label. In an initially ominous sounding email to Vaags,

Woodstock Ventures’ Jen Roberts wrote, “We are the original producers of the Woodstock Festival, and owners of the copyrights and trademarks of the Woodstock name and logo.” Reading a little further, Vaags saw the words, “We love what you are doing, and we would be delighted to support your work.” Special Woodstock, whose logo is a smiley face, raises funds for instruments and music therapy for challenged folks with the festival at Providence Farm. “In short order,” Vaags

says on Special Woodstock’s website, “a contract was signed, permitting Special Woodstock to use Woodstock Ventures’ trademarks to promote (next) year’s (August 2015) Special Woodstock in Duncan. “We are excited to add that Special Woodstock will now be featured on Woodstock Ventures’ website, explaining what the (Providence Farm) festival is all about, along with pictures, video and T-shirts for sale to help raise money needed to produce a quality festival for our island community.”

Inspiring parents and children to be ‘heart-centred’ Meetup group among tools for parents looking to learn from others Angela Cowan News Gazette staff

For Colleen Adrian, helping other parents feel capable and confident in their parenting styles, helping them lead “authentic and heart-centred” lives, has become the driving passion in her life. To further that passion, she’s hosting a monthly Meetup group to bring parents together in a supportive and collaborative environment. Adrian, a retired nurse with her masters degree and over 20 years experience, has been writing about parenting, hosting workshops and coaching on a one-to-one basis for several years through her company Crystal Clear Living. She added the monthly meeting to “provide a place to create community and support for parents who are trying to do things differently.” “You can’t always parent children the same way (as others),” she says. “I think we have instincts about that, but there’s a lot of social pressure to do things a certain way. And there’s a lot of pressure for children to conform as well.” After giving birth to her son 10 years ago, Adrian left nursing to pursue alternative health practices.

She became a Reiki master and trained in specialized kinesiology and non-violent communication to learn to be the parent she had envisioned for herself. “I really wanted to change things, but I was finding it really hard. I went on quite an intense research journey myself.” Adrian is able to pass along the fruits of that research now, and teaches parents “how to get some clarity and access their own knowing.” “Sometimes we can be so hard on ourselves and think we’re bad parents,” she says. “(The meetup) gives a sense of not being alone.” Adrian focuses on giving parents effective communication and conflict resolution skills to strengthen their relationship with their children. “It’s about creating open, meaningful relationships with family. And it allows our children to stay connected and open-hearted. It’s about not being afraid to step out and be a Picasso or an Emily Carr. I’m the only child (son) in our family with no ‘aging parent’ experience. I live in another province but have arranged to spend three weeks with them in the very near future. Can you tell me some signs that I should be aware of in case they shouldn’t be living alone any more?

Some common signs that a move to a more supportive environment such as a retirement residence may be a good idea for your loved one(s), are: 1. Less active lifestyle and the tendency to stay home; becoming less socially engaged. 2. You notice a change in the quality of (their) communication or the frequency of communication. 3. You may see fewer invitations to their home and notice a change in visit patterns. 4. They have unopened bills and other mail. 5. Their home is unkempt, laundry or dishes are piling up. 6. They experience unexplained weight loss. 7. You notice unusual damage to their home or vehicle. 8. Bruises or other signs of trauma from falls or difficulty navigating around the house. If you do notice any of these signs, arrange a meeting with their family doctor. Depending upon the severity and extent of support required, start your research. A Senior Living Community may be an appropriate option, but certainly is not the only option. One very useful tool is the Seniors Serving Seniors publication. Halloween costumes a challenge When my kids were small, the mere mention of Halloween stirred up a cauldron of angst. As the words, “What are you going to be for Halloween?” starting buzzing among the girls and their friends, I knew, inevitably, I would be called upon to create something obscure like a slug, or inappropriate Susan to the weather – “Yes! This delicate fairy needs to wear a coat!” – or just plain impossible. The low point was the year I “sewed” the aforementioned slug costume for my elder daughter. I can’t sew, and that pretty much sums up that experience. However, although my sewing skills never improved, I did get wiser. One year, a few months before the main event, I carefully considered the character Pippy Long Stocking. I mentioned Pippy and Halloween in the same breath, and it worked. Danica would LOVE to be Pippy! I bought a thrift store Pippy dress and red hair spray. I inserted a straightened coat hanger

into Danica’s hair, and then braided her long tresses around it. When Danica sewed her own patches onto the dress and apron, I felt like dropping to my knees in thanks. Sierra continued to grasp her childhood-long penchant for selecting one set of clothes and Lundy wearing them day after day, month after month. From her preschool adoration of a flowery, black-bodiced dress and Kindergarten addiction to Osh Kosh overalls, her fashion flair evolved in Grade One to a single pair of cut-off shorts with tattered tights and gumboots, and by this year, velour shirts and jeans. “So what do you want to be for Halloween?” I asked, crossing my fingers. “You know, ghosts are really exciting — you get to cut holes in a sheet and wear it over your head!” “I want to be a bat.” “A bat?” I said, trying to swallow my excitement. “But weren’t you a bat last year?” “Yup.”

I held my breath. “We, ah, might even have last year’s costume hanging around somewhere. The one you can wear a coat underneath.” “Yup.” You mean I don’t have to sew? I don’t have to traipse through drug stores and closets and dress-up boxes? I don’t have to cut and paste and plan? Bats are a really, really good thing. Maybe you could be one next year too, huh? Suddenly I liked Halloween! We zipped around the trick-or-treating block; the girls picked up several Caramilk bars (Danica doesn’t like chocolate so guess who got her bounty!) and did a trip through the Spook House. This was the first year the girls did Spook House. Sierra blazed through it, hoping to find something that would scare her, while Danica clung to my arm and squeezed her eyes shut at every corner. It was a fine evening. And when we got home I put away the Pippy costume, and began working right away on convincing Sierra to wear it next year. Susan Lundy is editor of Boulevard Magazine.

Q How do you find time for

“you?”

I have to make time. It’s not easy, we have busy chaotic days, which is the normal in our house, so I just get out and do it. I don’t give into being tired. Playing soccer and exercising balances me. It’s not always the first thing I want to do at the end of a long day, and having six children makes it a challenge, but I know it’s my way of recharging, emotionally and physically.

What are you reading right now? With your kids?

When I can find a few moments before falling asleep, I look forward to finishing my book, The KingMaker’s Daughter, by Philippa Gregory. With my children, we do most of our reading during homework time. For my son and I, we read books collected over the years with my girls: Dora the Explorer, Clifford, Sesame Street, Thomas the Tank Engine. I have great little helpers who seem to really capture the adventures in the stories!

What is your favourite family activity to share together?

We frequently visit Sooke Potholes in the summer. It’s so easy for us. We pack up the snacks and into the car for a quick 15 min. drive, for two hours of fun. But, if anything, my favourite activity is our free time spent together making dinner on Sunday. The girls help in the kitchen, bringing us together, and we have our girl talk.

The part of your day you look forward to the most?

That would in the morning, 8:30 to 9:50 a.m. The girls are at school, and I have just over an hour before I start my day. Having one on one time with my son is awesome. The morning is almost the only time he will cuddle with his mommy, so I take it when I can get it!

The Victoria Real Estate Board report on real estate activity in the Capital Region for September 2014 showed 565 properties sold in the region this September - an increase of 16% compared to the 487 properties sold in the same month last year. The quarter ending in September shows a 15% increase in the number of sales overall compared to the same quarter in 2013. “Once again we see more houses sold this month than last September,” Victoria Real Estate Board President Tim Ayres says. “We haven’t seen sales like this in September since 2009. The balanced market conditions we’ve seen over the last seven months mean property prices are stable, so it might be more comfortable for buyers and sellers to make a move because they know that property values are predictable.” The Multiple Listing Service® Home Price Index benchmark value for a single family home in the Victoria Core this time last year was $550,900. This month the benchmark value increased to $556,200.

With market whims and personal preferences playing major roles in residential developments, the notion of creating a neighbourhood is one that cannot be taken lightly by developers. The developers of Ocean Grove in Colwood, Seacliff Properties, appear to understand that and are treading carefully when it comes to planning the buildout of the ambitious project. Their proposal for further development on the 34-acre property, nestled in a wild section of nearwaterfront land a stone’s throw from Esquimalt Lagoon and Royal Roads, calls for flexibility, says Ian Porter, director real estate for Seacliff. “Our primary (goal) is to create a comprehensive zone for the site,” Porter says. “We’re looking at adding a potential for a variety of housing types, from single family homes to condominiums and townhouses. We’re setting it up for moving forward in today’s environment, not for the 2009 environment.” Seacliff purchased the former Aquattro project out of receivership a couple of years back and picked up where marketing firm Anthem Properties left off, promoting the completed units that remained unsold. There’s still a handful of high-end suites left in one of the three buildings and they’re selling for deep discounts from the original prices. Potential buyers will have a bet-

That plan is tentatively scheduled to come before the city’s planning and land-use committee later this month, after which council will see it and hear the committee and staff’s recommendations on the request. While selling out the remaining units is a current focus, Seacliff is looking down the road at the longrange plan for the site, which is to create homes more in line with today’s market, Porter says. Initiated during the real estate boom, Aquattro was aimed at U.S. and Alberta buyers who may have been buying them as a second or third home, and not really caring about the costs, Porter says. “We’re looking at repositioning it for today’s market. We’re focused

much more on the local market and what’s happening there, versus outof-town.” Porter noted that with plenty of supply right now and different market dynamics – the “balanced market” that realtors often talk about means selling prices are more normalized – it’s borderline whether building right now makes sense. That said, the planning for the future of the site is moving ahead. “This is a long-term project,” he says, “it’s got to make sense over time.” The plans call for an integration of the trails and proximity to the ocean and Royal Roads with the development. It also calls for an eventual ground-level commercial centre, giving residents shopping options nearby. As well, a move is planned for

the main entranceway to the property, to “give people a real sense of arrival,” Porter says. According to a city spokesperson, the rezoning application calls for an increase in the number of units for the zone from 585 to 795, with potential for 1,800 square metres of commercial space. Even if the application is approved, likely not until 2015, Porter says, it’s uncertain what the next phase of development would be. “We would bring in a phase that meets the current market demand, whether that’s apartments, or townhouses or single family dwellings. The market is there right now to start the next phase, but the market demand will dictate whether it’s 10 units or 100 units.” For more information, visit oceangrove.ca.
