MUNICIPAL ELECTION

Political veterans back in the race

PUTTING THE SQUEEZE ON EXTRA FRUIT

Friday deadline for nominations BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff

Whomever wins the top spot on village council is secondary, says a former Warfield mayor trying to reclaim his past position. It's been six years since there has been enough interest for a council or mayoral race in Warfield. What matters most, says Bill Trewhella, is that there are enough candidates vying for a seat in village politics so citizens have opportunity to mark a ballot on Nov. 15. “What I hope for the most is that there will be an election,” Trewhella told the Trail Times Monday. “People want the chance to get out and vote,” he said. “And the longer we go without that opportunity, the worse it is for democracy.” Trewhella has no axe to grind in the political arena, he explained, but since his 11-year stint as village mayor ended in 1996, the basic principals of public service have remain unchanged, so he's ready to tackle the area's most recent issues. Trewhella is the only Warfield resident who's signed up so far. And with time ticking toward the Friday deadline for a seat in municipal government, uncertainty remains if Warfield's 1,400 electors will finally have a say in its leadership for the next four years. There's confirmation that Silver City citizens will have a place at the polls with a two, possibly three-way, mayoral race already underway and seven people up for one of six seats on Trail council. Besides Mike Martin and Doug Jones intent on becoming mayor of Trail, first time potential candidate Casey LeMoel has a website up and running, though there's been no official confirmation of his nomination to date. There's also a new twist added to the Trail councillor race after a veteran politician threw his hat into the ring last week. See MAYORAL, Page 3

Ages to Stages offer screening for young children BY SHERI REGNIER Times Staff

There's no such thing as a silly question when it comes to the health and well being of your child. With this in mind, Greater Trail parents with children up to age five, are invited to book an appointment for the Family Action Network's Ages and Stages event slated for Wednesday at the Kiro Wellness

Centre. Seven service providers will be on hand that day to meet one-on-one with parents before screening their little ones for growth milestones and other functional skills or age-specific tasks that most children can do at a certain age. “We are really trying to normalize the developmental screening process,” explained Christy Anderson, regional coor-

dinator for the Family Action Network (FAN). “We are pushing to get that message out because the parent is the expert of their child,” she said. “So if they have a feeling that something with their child isn't on track, then please come in. Let’s have those fears either alleviated or addressed.” This is the third Ages to Stages day that serves Lower Columbia families from

Fruitvale to Rossland. Word about the opportunity to meet with experts under one roof is spreading, because Anderson said the appointment bookings are filling up quickly. “I think the approach we take by having all the therapists come to us to connect with the families is quite unique,” she noted. The performance series won't just be for kids, says Tremblay. Adults will get their fair share of fun out of the shows as well. “There are going to be jokes that go right over the kids' heads,” she said. “It really is going to be fun for everyone.” Teck Trail Operations provided funding for the series and communications manager Carol Vanelli Worosz says the company jumped at the chance to help out. “We are pleased to support the Teck Children’s Series as it offers our area’s young

children and their families the opportunity to enjoy performance art that is specifically geared towards them,” she said in an email reply. “It complements our sponsorship of programs and performances suited to adult tastes that are also organized by the Trail and District Arts Council and the Trail Society for the Performing Arts, among other are arts and culture societies and organizations.” Tremblay says providing consistent arts programming for kids isn't just fun, it helps them develop in other areas. “Having the arts, and there are statistics out there, creates a well-rounded kid,” she said. “It can improve performance in other parts of their lives. I can’t wait for audiences around here to experience these amazing acts coming to us from as far away as Toronto.” The SAM2 show is the first to hit the stage at the Charles Bailey Theatre, with the next program taking place on Nov. 9 for a live show from fiddler-clown-aviator Major Conrad Flapps with magic tricks, songs and physical comedy. Variety of tests done under one roof

FROM PAGE 1 “First and foremost the parent can meet face-to-face with the service provider. Often it’s the initial connection that’s the biggest hurdle.” Ages to Stages provides a questionnaire that takes a holistic approach to the child’s well being, because outside of physical milestones, such as hearing and speech, emotional and behavioural issues are also key to healthy growth and development. “The whole point is that by the time the child reaches Kindergarten, we have made a connection to a service provider who can address any vulnerability that we may start to see,” Anderson said. “That comes with checking early and checking often. If we can detect something through screening and can do something early on, it may disappear by school age,” she added. “Or we can see that they have additional and appropriate supports needed to live a full and healthy life.” A pre-booked hour long appointment gives parents the opportunity to have their child’s hearing tested by an audiologist and a review with a speech therapist; teeth examined by a dental professional; time with an infant

Life Chain

or childcare development consultant; and a session with an occupational therapist and physiotherapist. Additional resources will be on hand, such as information about screening for blood lead levels. As popularity of the event grows, Anderson said expanding Ages to Stages day into the Beaver Valley and Warfield/Rossland communities is a priority project for the organization. “Normalization of the developmental screening process is the thinking behind this,” she said. “We want to get to a place across our region, that early screening is something we do naturally.” The Family Action Network (FAN) connects parents, educators and professionals through collaborative programming that educates, inspires and positively impacts the broader community. The organization is working toward the vision of being a leading region in child-friendly development in Canada, explained Anderson. “We envision a region where families feel welcome and connected and where community stakeholders work together to ensure that children grow up in safe, healthy, happy and inclusive environments.”

Mayoral race in Rossland FROM PAGE 1 After a 10-year hiatus from politics, former Trail Mayor Sandy Santori is ready to dive back into municipal affairs – not in his past title, rather as a member of city council. He is running alongside newcomer Lisa Pasin, and five incumbents, Robert Cacchioni, Rick Georgetti, Eleanor Gattafoni-Robinson, Sean Mackinlay, and Kevin Jolly. In Montrose, former mayor Griff Welsh is taking another run at the top spot against incumbent Joe Danchuk. In Fruitvale, Mayor Patricia Cecchini is unopposed so far but two people, incumbent Tabatha Webber and newcomer James Ellison are listed as candidates for the village’s four-member council. Reginald Mullaly seeking a position on the village’s four-member council. The Regional District of Kootenay Boundary doesn’t have any candidates listed on the civic info website. However Linda Worley, Area B’s incumbent director filed papers last week and Area A incumbent Ali Grieve filed Monday. The Golden City will be hosting an electoral race this year after Rossland Coun. Kathy Moore stepped up to challenge the city’s current mayor, Greg Granstrom. Granstrom won his position by acclamation in 2011, but the city’s six-member council was voted in after a 10-way race for a seat. There’s no word if the current city councillors will seek re-election and by Monday afternoon, no candidates were listed on the civic site.

Maintenance near Teck may cause noise By Liz Bevan Times Staff

This week, Trail residents will be hearing a loud and unusual hissing noise coming from the Linde plant, near Teck Trail Operations. Neil Moon, manager at the Linde plant, says not to be alarmed, it is just part of a regular cleaning process. “I'd say it is a hissing, but multiply that by quite a bit,” he said. “I think the community gets used to the background noises from Teck and Linde, but this time, they will hear something louder and a differ-

ent noise. “We hate to disrupt the community, but it is something that we do about every five years.” The plant provides water to Teck, liquid oxygen to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital and different gases, like argon, to computer manufacturers like Intel. Linde's distillation columns, for the distilling of air into oxygen, argon and nitrogen, are the part of the plant getting cleaned this week, and Moon says the process will take a couple of days. “We are going to blow air

through the columns at ambient temperature, and as we blow that through the column, it sort of boils off that cooled liquid (argon, oxygen and nitrogen),” he said. “It is not the conventional boiling where you add electric power. “The air (we blow through the columns) has such a temperature difference to the liquids that the liquids will heat up and turn to gas, blowing out of the column. “We just want to let people know that it will only go on for a couple of days and we ask for their patience.”

Legislature throne speech focuses on trade and teachers By Tom Fletcher Black Press

VICTORIA – Premier Christy Clark’s government launched its fall legislative session Monday with a speech from the throne offering progress on resource trade, partnership with aboriginal people and labour peace with public school teachers. The speech described B.C. following the same path to Asia for liquefied natural gas as it did in expanding lumber trade when the U.S. housing market declined. “Like forestry, B.C.’s Pool photo/Canadian Press natural gas industry has relied on exports Premier Christy Clark meets Lt. Governor Judith to the United States,” Guichon for presentation of the throne speech at said the speech, read B.C. legislature.

The speech notes that Chinese LNG consumption rose by a fifth in the first half of 2014. “This is a chance – not a windfall,” the speech notes, after one of the leading investment groups warned of shifting conditions that could delay its participation. Clark told reporters after the speech that talks continue with Petronas, leader of one of the largest of 15 current LNG proposals, with a pipeline and gas export facilities planned for the B.C. north coast. “We are good at negotiating in this government,” Clark said. “We’ve got a good record. We’re going to keep negotiating hard.” The government plans to table framework legislation this month to define the

Black Press If you think the province’s electoral boundaries should be changed, here’s your chance. The BC Electoral Boundaries Commission will be in Trail on Wednesday for a public hearing at the Best Western Plus Columbia River Hotel on Rossland Ave., beginning at 10:30 a.m. Residents are welcome to provide input at such meetings, which generally go for about two-and-a-half hours and include a 10-minute presentation. Trail is one of 29 communities around the province being visited by the commission, explains Don Main, communications manager with the commission. He said the group is looking at four different parts of the province, one of which is the central and east Interior. The tour includes stops in Kelowna, Kamloops, Salmon Arm, Penticton, Revelstoke and Cranbrook. The commission considers factors such as whether there’s a town or a development on one side of a boundary that identifies with another electoral district, for instance. “It’s like renovating a house – if you’re not adding a room, you’re taking it from another room.” He said a non-partisan boundaries commission is appointed after every second election in B.C., or every eight years. Within its mandate is the option of increasing the number of electoral districts by two. B.C. is currently divided into 85 ridings, which are each represented by one Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). Residents may provide input to the commission via an online submission form or by email. Input will be accepted if it is received before 11:59 p.m. Nov. 16. NDP leader John Horgan said it’s been a year since the government first promised a tax structure for LNG, and now with a deadline looming at of the end of October, Clark is trying to back away from 2013 election promises to retire B.C.’s debt and slash taxes based on LNG revenue. “I think we gave away our bargaining power when it comes to liquefied natural gas,” Horgan said. “Everyone in the sector knows that the premier is way out on a branch and made commitments that she cannot keep.” The speech described the recent six-year labour agreement with B.C. teachers after a strike that stretched from spring to the early weeks of the fall school term. “British Columbia can look forward to five years of labour peace,” the speech said. “This is unprecedented. We cannot let this opportunity pass.”

Class sizes shrinking THE CANADIAN PRESS WINNIPEG - The Manitoba government says it has hired more than 100 new teachers this year as part of its goal to reduce class sizes. Education Minister James Allum says the province has hired a total of 315 teachers in the first three years of its plan. Speaking at the opening of a new kindergarten classBriefs room in Winnipeg, Allum said almost 60 per cent of kindergarten to Grade 3 classes now have 20 or fewer students. Allum says that means teachers have more time to spend with individual students to assess their skills in the critical early learning years. He says the government has invested more than $40 million since the smaller-class initiative began in 2011-12. As part of the plan, school divisions will be required to ensure kindergarten to Grade 3 classrooms are at 20 students or fewer by September 2017. “We know that students are more likely to succeed when they have more time with their teachers,” Allum said.

Town votes on liquor sales THE CANADIAN PRESS CARDSTON, Alta. - A ban on alcohol sales that has been in place since Alberta became a province will be voted on in a plebiscite in the town of Cardston today. The predominantly Mormon town, 240 kilometres south of Calgary, has been dry for the past 109 years. Cardston was founded in 1887 by Mormon settlers and the religion prohibits drinking coffee, tea and alcohol, and believes Sundays are holy and should be about reflection. About 80 per cent of its 3,500 residents are Mormons, also known as the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The non-binding plebiscite limits the sale of alcohol at restaurants with a meal or at the local golf course or recreational facility. It does not call for the opening of liquor stores. The plebiscite, which also asks about fluoride in the water and allowing backyard hens, simply asks “Are you in favour of alcohol sales within the Town of Cardston?”

Thank you for your understanding during this time.

Iraq debate leaves Canadians in fog of war

THE CANADIAN PRESS O T TAWA Canadian CF-18s will soon be heading off to war in Iraq, leaving Parliament and the public in a fog about some key elements of the military commitment - notably what efforts will be made to limit civilian casualties. The House of Commons stands poised to approve a motion, likely today, that would deploy six fighter-bombers, two CP-140 surveillance planes and one refuelling aircraft for coalition air strikes in Iraq for up to six months. Today’s vote comes as the Pentagon warns that extremists with the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have “gotten better at concealment” since the U.S., Britain, France and key Arab countries began air raids. U.S. Rear Admiral John Kirby, the assistant secretary of defence for public affairs, told reporters in Washington that extremists who rode around in the open have now dispersed and are hiding among the civilian population, forcing allied air forces to change their own strategy. “We’ve seen them change some of their tactics,” Kirby said. “Before the airstrikes happened, they were - they pretty much had free

rein. They don’t have that free rein anymore, because they know we’re watching from the air.” The Harper government was mute during Monday’s debate about what precautions would be taken to prevent bombs from going astray and killing innocent people. Defence Minister Rob Nicholson would only say that the air force will “live up to the highest standards.” National Defence was asked what sort of legal agreements were in place to protect Canadian pilots from possible accusations of targeting civilians. A spokeswoman for Nicholson, Johanna Quinney, would only respond with the blanket assurance that the air force is “authorized to strike ISIL in the Republic of Iraq.” NDP Leader Tom Mulcair said the “Conservatives have gone out of their way to stifle informed debate.” The use of airstrikes - and the resulting civilian casualties - was a big factor in turning many Afghans against NATO forces in that country. The anger became so strong that the U.S. general leading the war effort was forced to place limits on how and when they could

“Conservatives have gone out of their way to stifle informed debate.” Tom Mulcair

be used. The Libya bombing campaign was conducted with relatively few civilian casualties, but those deaths were reviewed by a United Nations commission that urged the military alliance to conduct its own further investigation. Green Party Leader Elizabeth May questioned the effectiveness of airstrikes, citing published reports from the region quoting Kurdish fighters who say the airstrikes have failed to slow ISIL’s advance. “They scattered and re-form after the jets leave,” said May, who asked for evidence that the bombing runs would prove effective. She wondered whether “the planned mission will do anything other than to fall into the trap (ISIL) has set to get us involved for their propaganda and ongoing efforts to destabilize the region and encourage recruitment.” Neither Nicholson nor National Defence would say which of Canada’s principal fighter bases

- Bagotville, Que., or Cold Lake, Alta. would contribute the CF-18s. The Conservative government also refused to say where the aircraft would be based in the Middle East. Britain, on the other hand, has made no secret of the fact its Tornado GR4 fighter jets are operating out of Cyprus. Nicholson would not provide an estimate on what the deployment could cost, despite the fact the U.S. openly acknowledged last week its campaign is already closing in on the $1-billion mark. By way of benchmark, Canada’s nearly eight-month long air assault on Libya in 2011 - with an identical-sized force - cost roughly $350 million. Also left unanswered by the debate was the question of under what circumstances Canadian air-

craft would conduct missions over Syria. Last week, Prime Minister Stephen Harper said such raids would only be done with the consent of the Syrian government, but the NDP expressed outrage at the notion. President Bashar al-Assad’s government, which ISIL has been fighting, would stand to benefit. Conservative ministers have so far not explained how such consent for Canadian bombing would be obtained. Liberal foreign affairs critic Marc Garneau said the government failed to make the case for war. “The prime minister is taking us across the Rubicon by deciding on a combat mission,” he said. “Once a country makes that decision, there is no turning back the clock,” he added.

Oil becoming a slippery slope for cities

E

very year when B.C.’s municipal politicians get together to preach to the provincial cabinet, there comes a point in the maze of resolutions where things go sideways. Last year it was a misinformed, impossible demand to ban all traces of genetic engineering. Before that they thumbed their mobile phones and denounced wireless power meters. Both votes passed by narrow margins in a halfempty chamber, with many delegates focused on the serious community issues they are elected to address. This year it was a charge led by Burnaby to denounce the proposed Trans Mountain oil pipeline expansion. And this time it was defeated. Credit for this sudden attack of common sense goes largely to North Cowichan Coun. Al Siebring. Here’s part of his address to the recent Union of B.C. Municipalities convention

in Whistler: “Ladies and gentlemen, we are elected to handle things like roads and water and sewer and land use, police, fire, garbage. We’re not here to talk about social policy, child poverty or heaven forbid, pipelines. “Those kinds of things dilute our credibility as an organization. We’re becoming a social policy activist group rather than a group of municipal politicians. “Half of this resolutions book is stuff that’s outside of our purview…. If you want to do social policy, get your butt elected to the provincial legislature.” B u r n a b y, New Westminster, Victoria and Vancouver were undeterred. In tax-rich urban centres one can make a living at local politics. And grandstanding works. Burnaby Coun. Nick Volkow rattled off a jumbled history of refineries in his region, noting that the sole surviving

TOM

FLETCHER B.C. Views

Chevron plant is bringing in crude by trucks and trains because the 60-year-old pipeline is over-subscribed. He didn’t explain how stopping a pipeline upgrade would keep it open, or improve oil safety. Volkow repeated the protester myth that a new pipeline would introduce diluted bitumen to the coast. Trans Mountain started shipping dilbit in the late 1980s. Kamloops Mayor Peter Milobar and others from along the Interior pipeline route pointed out another flaw. If southern cities want to wander

outside their mandate to make this gesture, why target only this pipeline and ignore rail lines and highways that cross the same rivers and streams? Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan boasted that after his first court challenge to the National Energy Board was tossed out, his high-priced ecolawyer found a constitutional angle. Cha-ching! Meanwhile, professional protesters bike-lock their necks to the fence at Burnaby’s Westridge oil terminal, and a radical Simon Fraser University professor revives his Occupy Vancouver team to step up the ground war if courts falter. The comedy of all this was illustrated by Coun. Robin Cherbo from Nelson, who assured delegates he uses synthetic oil in his vehicle. Is that derived from organic sunflowers? And what significance does that gesture have compared with the gasoline and jet fuel that carried 1,200 delegates to

Whistler? Cherbo assumes that Ottawa can simply direct Alberta’s oil industry to start refining all the heavy oil there. H alf a century into this industrial mega-project, this stuff should just be banned from pipelines. Peace, man. This is why electiontime posturing by local politicians is a slippery slope. Not only do they lack authority, they and their staff lack the required expertise and information. The Trans Mountain pipeline starts in Alberta and branches into the U.S. It is by definition federal jurisdiction. NEB hearings on its expansion continue, with expert input, especially on shipping risks, from the B.C. government, Green MLA Andrew Weaver and others. Municipal politicians should pipe down and defend their own performance. Tom Fletcher is legislature reporter and columnist for Black Press.

Swift to mentor aspiring singers

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Taylor Swift has plenty of her own hits, and now she’ll be advising young singers on “The Voice” how to do it themselves. The NBC competition show said Friday that the “Shake It Off” singer is serving as a mentor to competitors later this month. She’ll make her first appearance on Oct. 27, giving her some prime-time exposure on the day that her new album is scheduled to be released. On three shows, Swift will advise contestants on vocal technique, stage presence and picking the right songs to fit their strengths. There’s no word on whether Swift will appear after the Nov. 3 show.

More ‘Curb’ coming?

THE CANADIAN PRESS There’s pretty good news for “Curb Your Enthusiasm” fans. Creator and star Larry David says there might be some more material he can squeeze out of the series. During an on-stage interview in New York, David said he’s not sure he wants to do a whole ninth season of the sorta-autobiographical comedy. But he did say “I haven’t given up the hope” of making more episodes. David also wished he was a little more like his “Curb” alter ego at times. “In a way I wish I was that character because he’s so honest.”

Trio shares Nobel Prize in medicine

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS STOCKHOLM, Sweden - U.S.-British scientist John O’Keefe and Norwegian married couple May-Britt Moser and Edvard Moser won the Nobel Prize in medicine on Monday for discovering the brain’s positioning system. This “inner GPS” helps explain how the brain creates “a map of the space surrounding us and how we can navigate our way through a complex environment,” the Nobel Assembly said. O’Keefe, of University College London, discovered the first component of this positioning system in 1971 when he found that a certain type of nerve cell was always activated when a rat was at a certain place in a room. Thirty-four years later May-Britt

and Edvard Moser, of the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in Trondheim, identified another type of nerve cell that generates a co-ordinate system for precise path-finding, the assembly said. It said that knowledge about the brain’s positioning system may “help us understand the mechamism underpinning the devastating spatial memory loss” that affects people with Alzheimer’s disease. A Canadian researcher had been among those touted as a potential winners of the 2014 Nobel Prize for medicine by an organization that predicts which scientists are most likely to take home one of the coveted awards. Dr. Stephen Scherer, director of the

GEOFFREY HOLDER

Versatile actor was a Bond villain and 7-Up pitchman THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW YORK - Geoffrey Holder, a Tony Awardwinning director, actor, painter, dancer and choreographer who during an eclectic show business career led the groundbreaking show “The Wiz” to Broadway, pitched 7-Up on TV and played a scary villain in a James Bond film, has died. He was 84. Holder died Sunday of complications of pneumonia at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Hospital in New York, according to Anna Glass, a producer and family friend. The 6-foot-6, Trinidad-born Holder won Tonys in 1975 for directing and designing the costumes for his all-black retelling of “The Wizard of Oz.” In 1978, he directed and choreographed the lavish Broadway musical “Timbuktu!” starring Eartha Kitt and earned another Tony nomination for best costumes. On TV, Holder played roles on TV’s “Tarzan,” voiced the leader on the PBS Kids animated show “Cyberchase” and pitched 7-Up as “the un-cola” in a commercial in which he wore a white suit purring “maaarvelous” as he drank the soda.

It’s been decades since CPR travelled on a routine basis to and from Teck’s operations in Trail at night. There’s no burning need for it now either. I further suggest that CPR stop blaming their schedule change on one of their best customer’s needs. Teck has apparently assured us that they have nothing to do with it. It’s shameful that thousands of people living alongside these tracks from Nelson through Castlegar, Genelle, and Rivervale must take a back seat to a few more dollars on CPR’s bottom line, but can’t CPR have just an ounce of concern for others?

I hear it’s all about improved efficiency. How about weighing that improvement for CPR against waking thousands of us up with that damned whistle all hours of the night. While they’re at it, I suggest that they also consider the increased risks they expose us to. CPR routinely carries extremely poisonous, heavier than air SO2 from Trail. A derailment and rupture of one of these cars during daylight hours could be terrible for those of us living between the tracks and the river, but it could be unimaginably horrific if it happened when we’re all

asleep. Everyone understands the need for CPR moving goods in and out of Trail, and everyone understands and accepts the necessary adversity and risk of living alongside CPR’s tracks. But when necessary adversity and risk becomes blatant disregard for citizens living alongside those tracks, all for the sake of a couple of bucks to CPR, it’s a bit difficult to swallow..........and even more difficult to get a decent night’s sleep. Looking forward to some of CPR’s community-mindedness, Russ Babcock Genelle

Appreciation for recovered wallet I would like to say a big thank you to the worker that found my wallet in the storm drains in the Gulch and took the time to get it to the RCMP. My wallet was stolen from my purse, at work, almost a year ago. Of course I have replaced the cards, but some were irreplaceable and it’s nice to have them back. It’s just nice to know that someone took

Education can be an even bigger engine for export growth and economic development in the coming decade. There are also promising opportunities to expand B.C.’s exports in many other service industries – e.g., engineering, financial services, tourism, and a host of technology-related services that embody intellectual property and depend on highly educated labour. Tradable services currently represent more than 30 per cent of the value of the province’s total international exports. A recent Business Council paper examined B.C.’s exports of advanced technology products and services. We found that the value of technology-based service exports exceeds that of technology-based goods exports by more than three-to-one. In addition, services account for a large majority of the 85,000 or so jobs found in the province’s advanced technology sector. All of this underscores the main point: locally-produced services which can be sold to customers beyond B.C.’s borders are a vital source of employment today and are likely to figure even more prominently in the job market and economy in the future. Nitehawks climb division ladder BY JIM BAILEY

Times Sports Editor

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks found their scoring touch on the weekend as they took five-of-six points in three weekend KIJHL matches to move within two points of top spot in the Neil Murdoch division. The Hawks fell 6-5 to the Grand Forks Border Bruins in overtime on Friday, before bouncing back with a 6-5 win over the Chase Heat Saturday, and a 6-4 victory over the Spokane Braves on Sunday. “We got better as the weekend went on,” said Nitehawks assistant coach Kevin Limbert. “Today (Sunday) was a very good effort up and down the line up. I think that’s what was one thing we were missing in our first game (versus Grand Forks), we had some great performances but up and down the line up we didn’t have all 20 guys going.” On Sunday, Mitch Foyle scored two goals and added two assists and Brayden Horcoff netted the winner at 13:39 of the second period as the Hawks fired 62 shots at the Braves goaltender in the 6-4 win. Horcoff knocked down a Lyle Frank point shot in front of Brave goalie Trevor Dilauro and deked to the back hand to give the Hawks a 5-3 lead, in what was B.V.’s fourth win in five games. The weekend’s 17-goal outburst could be a turning point for a Hawks’ team that was struggling offensively, averaging just over two goals per game. B.V. again outshot the opposition in all three matches and dominated puck possession, but their finish around the net proved the difference. “I think earlier on in

Beaver Valley Nitehawks forwards like Michael Pruss are getting a little hungrier in the offensive zone as he crashes the net on this chance against the Spokane Braves goalie on Sunday. The Hawks would roll to a 6-4 victory over the Braves and take five-of-six points in three games on the weekend. the year we were doing a lot of good things down low in their end, just enough to get to the net. We were content to just shuffle the puck along the wall, whereas this weekend and, progressing forward, we’ve been getting to the net a lot more, had a lot more traffic, and just getting a lot hungrier in and around the net.” Spokane opened the scoring 28 seconds into the game, but B.V. replied when Jace Weeger tipped in a Reid Anderson point shot at 17:29 of the first. Anderson would get his second assist of the game at 10:57 when he dished to Foyle who made a slick move around two defenders to gain the slot, then rifled a wrist shot top corner to put the Hawks up 2-1 midway through the opening period. However, 41 seconds later, Spokane

tied it when Garrett Graham dug a puck out from behind the net and beat Carson Schamerhorn with a quick move in front.

But Andrew Miller would put the Hawks out front for good when his point shot deflected off a Braves defenceman and by Dilauro at 6:18, and Foyle would make it 4-2 before the period was out, when he broke down the right side and lasered a top-of-the-circle shot over the Brave goalie’s glove. trade goals in the second period, including Horcoff’s winner as the Hawks outshot the Braves 25-7 in the middle frame. Hawks rookie Spencer McLean would bang in a loose puck to net his first of the season with assists going to Foyle and Ross Armour midway through the third to make it 6-3. Jonny Marzec netted his second of the night to round out the scoring at 8:49, as B.V. outshot Spokane 62-23. Foyle was particularly effective on the weekend netting eight-points on four goals and four assists, including a couple highlight reel markers. The 18-year-old Fruitvale native rocketed to third in league scoring, and attributes much of his and the team’s recent scoring success to a solid work ethic leading up to the weekend.

“We had a full team effort today . . . and that’s what it takes for us to win, we need all guys going for 60 minutes,” said Foyle. “Guys just bearing down in practice, scoring lots in practice, it just carries onto the game.” Horcoff also had a productive weekend getting three helpers in the 6-5 victory over the Chase Heat on Saturday. Ross Armour scored the winner, taking a McLean pass in front of the net and making a quick move to the backhand to beat the Heat goalie 1:45 into overtime to give the Hawks a 6-5 victory. Tyler Hartman led the Hawks with a pair of goals, while Foyle and Weeger each scored once and Jacob Boyczuk had a twopoint night with a goal and an assist. Drake Poirer got the win in net for the Hawks. See BEST, Page 12

The Trail Smoke Eaters were running on all cylinders, getting production up and down the lineup as they defeated the Cowichan Valley Capitals 6-2 at the Comnico Arena on Friday. Five Smokie players had two-point nights, and Adam Todd stopped 48 shots and picked up an assist as Trail scored three goals in the first five minutes and never looked back. The win marks Trail’s third in five games to start the season, while the Caps drop to 1-and-6. “It was a good effort,” said Trail Smoke Eater coach Nick Deschenes. “From a team perspective we got on the board early, and that helped us take control of the game, although I think we played a little too loose for my liking in our defensive zone.” Jake Lucchini, Connor Brown-Maloski, and Dallas Calvin tallied goals in the first four minutes and eight seconds to give Trail what proved to be an insurmountable lead over the Island division Capitals. The three Smokies along with Brian Basilico each counted a goal and an assist on the night, while Brandon Volpe and Charlie Zuccarini rounded out the scoring for Trail. “Our game plan was to distribute the offence throughout four lines so we could roll four, and maintain a higher tempo, so that worked out. We had some balanced scoring, and we had guys that probably could have scored more goals, but they could have too so in the end we’re happy.” The Smokies newest acquisitions also paid dividends. Despite some good games to start the season, it was Brown-Maloski’s first goal as a Smoke Eater, and defenceman Griffyn Martin also picked up two helpers in his Smokies debut. “Connor has been getting better every game, and Griffyn hasn’t played for a while . . . but I think he’s going to settle in and really find his game. He is really solid, there’s no kinks to his game,” said Deschenes. The Capitals outshot the Smoke Eaters 50-49 but Todd was on his game making several big saves, in what Deschenes described as Todd’s best game of the season. The Courtney native is off to a good start with a 2.99 goals against average and a .911 save percentage in all five games. However, the number of shots against remains a concern for the Smokie coach, and something he plans to address in practice this week. “We’ve talked about it a little bit today, and our practice is probably going to try to simulate being more physical and being more aggressive, because I think we may be just a little too easy to play against.” Trail was 1-for-5 on the power play and perfect on the penalty kill with Cowichan going 0-for-6 with the man advantage. The Smokies hit the road this weekend with games against Powell River, Alberni Valley, and Surrey.

Kansas City on Royal roll

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Royals stole their way to a 12-inning victory over the Oakland A’s in the AL wild-card game. They powered their way past the mighty Los Angeles Angels with an emphatic three-game sweep in the divisional round. There’s no way they are going to be intimidated by the Baltimore Orioles. “We’re not afraid of those guys,” Royals ace James Shields said Sunday night. “We’re going to go out there and play our game - but obviously, we’re going to worry about that tomorrow.” On this night, there was celebrating to do. Alex Gordon hit a bases-clearing double in the first inning, Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas each homered and the wild-card Royals finished off the Angels with an emphatic 8-3 victory in the AL Division Series. gone on a tremendous tear, painting the entire city blue in the process. They’ve back in the post-season for the first time since 1985, and even Angels manager Mike Scioscia thinks they might be sticking around a while. “They’re going to be a tough team to beat in this tournament,” he said. The power-hitting Angels, 98-64 in the regular season, became the second team in the divisional era that began in 1969 to have the best record in the majors and get swept out of the playoffs, according to STATS. In no small coincidence, the Royals dealt the same humiliating fate to the New York Yankees in the 1980 ALCS. Stalking around the mound amid an electric atmosphere, Shields lived up to his “Big Game James” billing. The Royals’ ace gave up homers to Mike Trout and Albert Pujols, but otherwise held in check a suddenly punchless Los Angeles lineup Shields was helped, too, by diving grabs by outfielder Lorenzo Cain on back-to-back plays. All told, the highest-scoring team in baseball managed six runs in the entire series. “You don’t go in with any badge saying you won the most games,” Scioscia said, “and you’re certainly not going to get any points for that going into the playoffs.” Kansas City showcased great glovework in every game, especially by its fleet outfielders. In this one, Cain’s catches in the fifth inning preserved a five-run lead. The Royals coasted the rest of the way to their seventh straight post-season win dating to Game 5 of the 1985 World Series. George Brett, the star of that team, watched from an upstairs suite and raised his arms when ace closer Greg Holland fanned Trout for the final out. “We feel like we belong, that we can play with anyone and that’s always a good feeling,” Cain said. “If we continue to do what we did tonight and let that carry over into Baltimore, I think we can definitely make this thing last.”

Foyle netted two goals and an assist, while Kyle Hope, Weeger, and Miller rounded out the scoring as the Hawks outshot the Border Bruins 35-25. “We had some breakdowns that ended up in our net and we’ll have to address those and make some adjustments,” added Limbert. “I think it’s just a little bit of communication, between our low forward and our D. “But the best defence is a good offence and we’re pushing the puck up ice, and hurrying and grinding them out in their own end, and so a couple adjustments but overall pretty happy with how we played.” The Nitehawks play a home-and-home with Kimberley Dynamiters this weekend, with the first game going at the Hawks Nest in Fruitvale at 7:30 p.m.

THE CANADIAN PRESS Canadian hockey fans won’t just be switching to different channels to get their fix this season. Rogers and the NHL have promised more games and more robust coverage than ever as part of a new $5.2-billion, 12-year television-rights deal. “Hockey Night In Canada” will have a new look, with George Stroumboulopoulos taking over host duties from Ron MacLean, and Sportsnet recently unveiled a new state-of-theart, multimillion-dollar studio to showcase its newfound reach and influence in the sport. Don Cherry and MacLean will still team up for the “Coach’s Corner” segment, but some of the other pre-game, intermission and post-game coverage will be different. While it may take time for viewers to adjust to the changes, there will be no shortage of hockey on the air under the new broadcast agreement. “There are more games actually being televised than ever before,” NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said. “Hockey Night In Canada” games will be shown coast-to-coast instead of by region and Rogers and the NHL have made a point to showcase Sunday and Wednesday nights. Blackout restrictions on GameCentre Live for computers, tablets and smartphones will also contribute to the “more games” philosophy. Rogers is banking on Sunday night becoming appointment viewing with MacLean hosting “Hometown Hockey” from 25 cities across Canada. To do it, the league and the network mapped out a schedule that should make Sunday part of the new hockey-watching routine. NBC in the United States has its Wednesday night rivalry programming, and Rogers made sure it got the games it wanted among the 1,230 in the regular season. “We sat around the board with the NHL there were 12 of us, 12 of them - and said, ‘How can we create the best schedule?”’ Rogers Media president Keith Pelley said. “And you can see it. You can see the schedule now. There has not been a schedule like this for NHL hockey in this country ever. The NHL have been nothing but spectacular in helping us create the best schedule.”

‘Gone Girl’ finds MONday & Movies way to the top MONDAY EVENING

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LOS ANGELES - “Annabelle” couldn’t scare off “Gone Girl” at the weekend box office. The Fox thriller starring Ben Affleck as a man whose wife goes missing overcame the Warner Bros. possessed-doll horror movie with a $38 million debut, according to studio estimates Sunday. Both films join the recently released “The Maze Runner” and “The Equalizer” in crossing the $30 million mark this fall, a typically lowearning season at the box office. “It was virtually a photo finish,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for boxoffice tracker Rentrak. “These two movies couldn’t be more different. It shows how if the marketplace presents a diversity of product, audiences will come out. It’s the third and fourth $30 million debut of the past two weeks. It’s been a great post-summer run.” “Gone Girl” is based on the bestselling novel by Gillian Flynn and was directed by “The Social Network” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” filmmaker David Fincher. The film earned $24.6 million internationally. “I think David Fincher made a very provocative, thought-provoking film,” said Chris Aronson, head of distribution for Fox. “I think there was this crescendo of publicity and socialmedia chatter that made ‘Gone Girl’ into a zeitgeist-y movie that you have to see to be part of the conversation.” “Annabelle” debuted closely behind “Gone Girl” with $37.2 million. The movie stars Ward Horton and Annabelle Wallis as new parents who bring the creepy porcelain plaything seen in last year’s haunted house horror “The Conjuring” into their home. Sony’s “The Equalizer,” last week’s top performer, came in third place in its second weekend with $19 million, bringing its total domestic haul to $64.5 million. “Left Behind,” the weekend’s other big debut, opened in sixth place with $6.8 million. The Rapture-set film starring Nicholas Cage is based on the novel of the same name. Dergarabedian said overall ticket sales for the weekend box office were $149 million, an 18 per cent increase from the same weekend last year.

Please remind yourself that the cats would not be better off with you, and then inform your daughter of your decision. Dear Annie: My father recently passed away. In his will, he left some money to my

sible. If it comes from a professional, it will help. Dear Annie: The letter from “In Pain” struck a chord with me. He said his wife refuses intimacy and won’t discuss it. He says he helps around the house, makes her coffee, takes her out to dinner, sends her flowers and keeps himself in shape. Over the past few years, I have heard the same complaints from my husband. Here’s what’s going on in our house: My husband works a high-stress job, and even the smallest things set him off. I hear about these things all day long through his text messages, phone calls and in conversation after we both are home from work. What he doesn’t realize is that these conversations have an effect on me. After listening to him vent and complain (with anger and swearing), the last thing I want to do at

the end of the day is be intimate with him. All I want is a break from the stress that he passes on. I have tried to talk to him about this, but he responds with anger and frustration, and the conversations resolve nothing. I love my husband and have

no intention of leaving, but there are limits to what I can tolerate. “In Pain” should examine whether anything has changed in his behavior. He may be unknowingly pushing his wife away. While spouses should support each other,

there are still limits. We shouldn’t use our loved ones as emotional dumping grounds. -Need My Sanity Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column.

Dear Annie: My daughter is getting a divorce and moving into an apartment that allows her to have two cats. The problem is, she has four cats. She asked whether I would take two of them. I live in another state. It would be difficult to get the cats here, and I don’t think I can handle them. The idea of cat hair everywhere, smelly litter boxes, clawed furniture and finding cats in my bed when I’m sleeping is just too stressful. And frankly, I don’t want to be tied down. My husband and I are retired and travel a lot. How do we tell our daughter that we can’t take her cats without causing her grief? I only want to make her happy. -- Love Cats, But Not Here Dear Love Cats: We know you want to please your daughter, but this request is unfair to you, as well as to the unwanted cats. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 to Nov. 21) People will have short tempers today because of the Full Moon energy. (It’s Full Moon

in Aries!) Be aware of this so you can do some damage control. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 to Dec. 21) Your involvement in groups -- classes, meetings or conferences -- might be unsettling today because of arguments and disputes. Hopefully, you can sidestep these. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22 to Jan. 19) Even though you are torn between your loyalties to

your job and reputation as well as your loyalties to your home and family, today you cannot ignore your job. Too many things are happening. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 to Feb. 18) Avoid controversial subjects like politics, religion and racial issues today, because the Full Moon will create arguments at the drop of a hat. PISCES (Feb. 19 to March 20)

Double-check all financial transactions today, because difficulties might arise. This could apply especially to possessions, money or resources of other people for which you might be responsible. YOU BORN TODAY You can be a brilliant social butterfly. You are a free spirit who is interested in all kinds of people. You generally have good money savvy. Go slowly this year. There
