Teachers and students may be back in class but the financial uncertainty continues for Burnaby school district now that the education ministry wants all its strike savings back. Burnaby district secretary-treasurer Greg Frank said the district was allowed to keep 20 per cent of the total savings resulting from the teachers strike in the 2013-2014 school year. So Burnaby returned $6.3 million to Victoria representing the teacher salaries and benefits that were not paid due to the teachers’ job action in May and June. It gets to keep about $1.5 million and it also managed to save about $1.9 million in the costs of energy, substitute staff, supplies and services and benefits. But any hopes that the money would help the district’s already strained budget have been put on hold by the Ministry of Education. Please see DISTRICTS, A3
