Win or lose, the Oak Bay firefighters know when they lace up the gloves for Fight 4 The Cause III, a variety of local charities will be knockout winners in the annual event where social boxing and red carpet glamour mix it up in the ring. Brown, who has been with Oak Bay Fire for 18 months, came across the charitable fight night during friendly competitive banter at an August fundraiser in Victoria. Holliday and Moore bring Fish to church Two-man fringe show focuses on friendship Christine van Reeuwyk News staff

Jim Ricks won’t share the tragedy that leads to the final scene in Holliday and Moore presents Dancing with Fish. Apparently you have to attend the show to see the scene where the two-man show “turns a corner.” Holliday and Moore present Dancing with Fish stars Ricks and Scott Smith with Ann Sorensen on sounds. “We have something like 40 sound cues. It has to have split-second timing, be totally focussed,” he said emphasizing her role in the comedy. “She has had a steep learning curve and she’s been very helpful. She’s pretty tuned in to what’s going on.” The show has made audiences laugh, and think at fringe festivals in Port Alberni and Nanaimo. “These are two guys who meet by chance, they are guys of an indeterminate age,” Ricks explained. One is fairly introverted, the other outgoing and boisterous. “When they meet on the subway, there’s this music comes on, the song “Rescue me. Moore jumps right into it and starts dancing and Holliday has to be encouraged,” Ricks said. “That’s the

Bike tour brings awareness to AED sites October is sudden cardiac arrest awareness month and Oak Bay Recreation’s automated external defibrillator will get a visit from cyclist Michael Galasso on Monday (Sept. 29). Galasso will visit 19 different locations around southern Vancouver Island where AEDs were placed as part of the BC Public Access to Defibrillation program created by the British Columbia Ambulance Service and the Heart and Stroke

Foundation. The Tour D’Iridia, is an initiative developed by Iridia Medical, the distributor of AEDs for the Public Access to Defibrillation program. Over five days, Galasso will travel more than 400 kilometres to visit various sites and touch base with individuals responsible for managing the defibrillator. He’ll be at Oak Bay Recreation from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m. on Sept. 29.

AEDs are designed to treat sudden cardiac arrest, a condition where the heart suddenly stops pumping blood to the body. Recycling target of fire bug

Late in the evening on Sept. 21, the contents of three separate residential blue boxes were set on fire. The blue boxes were situated on the front street in the 3000-block area of Beach Drive in front of separate residences. Police say there was no risk of any buildings catching fire. Investigation regarding these incidents is ongoing.

Noisy party season begins

With the start of the university and college school year, police report a spike in the number of loud party complaints received last weekend. All house parties that police attended were being hosted by post-secondary students. “Generally, police will provide a ver-

bal warning to the homeowner or renter, as the case may be, and subsequent reports may result in fines issued pursuant to the Noise Bylaw,” said Sgt. Ray Maxwell. “More importantly, respecting the rights of their neighbours to have a peaceful night should be at the forefront of the minds of these young adults.”

Smokers caught at Cattle Point

Just after midnight on Sept. 17, police checked a motor vehicle at Cattle Point whose occupants were smoking marijuana. Police seized 12 grams of marijuana. A field sobriety test was conducted on the driver resulting in a 24-hour driving prohibition and the vehicle being removed from the roadway.

Vandals leave scrambled mess

Also on Sept. 17, police received three separate complaints of houses being egged. The residences were located on Thompson Avenue, St. Patrick Street, and Monterey Avenue.

iPads stolen from business

Police are investigating a commercial break, enter, and theft that occurred near Cadboro Bay and Foul Bay roads on Sept. 21. Shortly after 6 a.m., suspects forced their way into the business and stole a large quantity of iPads with an approximate value of $20,000. Saanich Forensic Identification Section attended to assist with the investigation at the scene.

Aging population creates challenge Statistics Canada’s latest population projections do not bode well for B.C.’s future, on a number of counts. The federal agency has B.C. falling to fourth-largest province in the country, with Alberta moving ahead of it to third. This is projected to happen over the next 20 years or so. B.C. will still be growing — but at a lesser rate than Alberta is projected to grow. Perhaps more dramatically though, B.C.’s population of seniors is expected to grow the most, to 27 per cent of the population by 2038. This is a higher-than-usual percentage of seniors, who for the most part will not be working and contributing to long-term economic growth. At the same time, they will put added pressure on the health care system. This is not to say that seniors are bad for the economy. It is simply that their needs bring new challenges to an economy which is already hobbled by minimal growth, and to a province where every resource-based proposal is met with a fury of opposition. A province cannot thrive long-term without economic growth. Simple population growth is not enough. B.C. is already a very expensive place to live. At the same time, few younger people have the opportunity to make really good incomes, and are thus handicapped from getting ahead. B.C. taxes are already quite high, which is masked by the sleight-of-hand about low income tax rates. However, when the seven per cent PST, ICBC rates, ferry fares, BC Hydro rates (all of which are tax increases), TransLink taxes and MSP premiums are taken into account, taxes are quite onerous on many people already. Low economic growth will inevitably lead to even higher taxes. B.C. weather and scenery are great, but they don’t pay the bills.

Question must support democracy Re: Amalgamation question may be on Oak Bay ballot, (News Sept. 11). Further to your reporting of this event, I wish to clarify an important point made to council on Sept. 8 concerning our current multimunicipal governance structure with 91 mayors and councillors. Oak Bay residents are calling for a non-binding referendum question on the November ballot to study this issue, as five other municipalities in the CRD are doing (to date). Provincially-funded studies would examine the feasibility, costs and benefits of potential future service integration. Oak Bay council is not being asked to dissolve the municipality in November. Clearly, detailed and unbiased studies are necessary to obtain factual information upon which residents can make informed future choices. Any formal governance changes would require a binding referendum in 2018 or beyond.

Councillor Kevin Murdoch is proposing to frame a question with a preamble before such studies are undertaken. It would be unfortunate if council proposed a specious question that could be construed as subverting the process by adding bias and fearmongering to the preamble. We need real opinions from Oak Bay residents as to whether they wish studies to be undertaken. What is lost by asking the people of Oak Bay for their opinion, in a nonbinding forum? Oak Bay council say few people are interested in this. But that conflicts with the number of residents who have signed online and paper petitions, and with the findings of the July Angus Reid Global poll that 76 per cent of Oak Bay residents (89 per cent across all 13 municipalities) support a non-binding referendum to study amalgamation. It is also true that people are often more comfortable expressing their honest viewpoints in a private

setting such a poll, rather than in individual communications with elected officials. The referendum question proposed by Oak Bay council on Sept. 29 must be conceived and designed in such a way as to support, not thwart, the democratic opportunity for residents to give their opinion in a non-binding manner, and we require a fair-minded approach from the current council. High school readies for Tour Weekend fundraiser focus on fun for family Laura Lavin

Meet the first band of the Oak Bay Rec concert season

Upstairs Lounge hosts its first concert of the season Saturday, Sept. 27 at 7:30 p.m. featuring Winnipeg trio Red Moon Road. The trio consists of jazztrained Daniel Jordan and bilingual prog-rock vet Daniel Peloquin-Hopfner who support twilight-voiced singer Sheena Rattai. “Victoria is the first date of a tour that will take us all the way down the Western seaboard to L.A. at the end of the month,” Jordan said. “We couldn’t be more excited to kick things off in Victoria and that excitement is going to make for a great show.” Oak Bay News indulged in a little Q&A with Daniel Jordan in advance of the concert at Oak Bay Recreation’s Upstairs Lounge, 1975 Bee St.: OBN: What brought you to Vancouver Island and Oak Bay? RMR: We, as a band, have only visited the beautiful Island once so far. Our connection are the fabulously talented Bachand siblings. We met Quinn and Qristina at a folk showcase conference in Ontario a number of years ago and were blown away. In an event full of talented people these two super young players stood out above the rest. Luckily, they were just as nice to hang out with as to listen to, and we really hit it off as friends. OBN: What kind of show do you promise residents of Oak Bay? RMR: Anyone who has seen Red Moon Road live knows that our show is a

mix of songs and stories. For us they are an inextricably part of what we do a musicians. Great stories make for great songs, and in the telling of the stories we have found the songs themselves take on a greater meaning. We are a band of diverse inferences, Daniel PeloquinHopfner played metal and classical music growing up, Sheena comes from a gospel and funk background, and Daniel Jordan studied jazz, and grew up on the Beatles and Motown. We will also be giving folks a sneak peek of music from our new album, due out late 2014. OBN: What do you hope the residents give you in return as an audience? RMR: The same warmth, enthusiasm and sophistication we received last time. It’s a pretty special honour to play for folks who respond so kindly, clap after solos and actually listen. Volkswagen has had an impressive ride here during the past few years, gaining market share and selling record numbers of cars – its best-selling car being the Jetta. When the last VW Jetta was introduced in 2011, it represented a major shift in the company’s sales philosophy. The decision was to make a larger sedan, yet drop the price to compete right in the heart of Canada’s compact segment, our largest sales category. With a starting price under $15,000 the Jetta is the biggest car in the compact class, offering a gateway into owning a German car, yet having the space and comfort North Americans expect. For 2015 VW continues with the same philosophy but ups the ante to include new engines, styling and interior amenities.

It would be easy to overlook the substantial updates to this new Jetta because the exterior tweaks are so subtle they need pointing out. The front grille, bumper and headlamps have all been replaced to include a bigger air opening and LED marker lights, plus xenon headlights are available. The back also receives a minor update that includes a new bumper, trunk and tail lamps. With a starting price of $14,990, the Trendline comes with hubcaps on 15-inch wheels. The midlevel $20,090 Comfortline can be equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels and the $25,490 Highline is fitted with 17-inch alloys. Then there are the TDI diesel versions that range from $22,490 to $27,790. Volkswagen has a wide range of prices, equipment and engine choices to suit. The most popular is the Trendline Plus at $17,190 that includes the must have…heated front seats!

It was a practical car but hardly luxurious or even sporty – spartan might be a good word. That has all changed with the new 2015 model thanks to new switches and dials that look and feel first rate. The drive event for the all-new Jetta was held in Middleburg Virginia, which I later discovered is in the wealthiest county in the United States. Huge homes on rolling farms, with stone fences and colonial designs reminds visitors that this is historic country; Middleburg witnesses action during the Gettysburg campaign of the American Civil War. The Salamander Resort was the backdrop for the introduction, an equestrian themed luxury resort that would make any new car look good. Surrounding it are rolling hills and winding roads, a perfect place to exercise the new suspension and engines in the Jetta. The previous car was recently updated to a full independent suspension and that carries over, as do disc brakes on all four wheels. The big news is a new 1.8L direct injection, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 170hp but an impressive 185 lb.-ft of torque. After driving both the new engines back to back I’d be hard pressed to choose. I love the torque of the diesel and the impressive efficiency. (It is rated at just 6.7L/100km in the city and 4.7L on the highway.) But the new turbo gasoline engine is a more spirited unit that provides a more enthusiastic experience. This engine delivers 8.1L/100km in the city and 5.6L on the highway. If I drove a lot, the diesel would be the way to go, but for more, fun the new 1.8L is impressive. Still in the mix is the old 2.0L 4-cylinder with 115hp offered in all Trendline and Comfortline models. This engine has been around since Moses was a boy, but it is a proven engine and offers a great starting price. At first glance the 2015 Jetta looks like a warmed over update but below the surface is substantial change. The highlights are the new interior and wonderful optional engines. It was getting used to the fact that I didn’t have a lot of wiggle room and that my mind would want to play tricks on me if I didn’t relax, let the bike and myself breathe, and enjoy the best that machine and Mother Nature have to offer. Day 2 was a game changer. I was so happy that I did some basic skills the day before because I embraced the various tones and textures of the perpetually evolving geography around me. Rocks, gravel, soil, sand (oh, there was a lot of sand), steep inclines, tree stumps, sharp corners, you name it, the Ganaraska Forest has it. Though I didn’t go at it alone. Groups were organized by skill level and were lead by individuals who know that forest like the back of their hand. Heck, I would have been lost after the first two turns. If you found that throughout the day you wanted

a more advanced riding, or wanted to take it easier, movement between groups was entirely possible. The name of the game there is safety, with fun at an extremely close second. “Remember, the trees don’t move,” coaches Al Lakas, chief instructor at Trail Tours. These words offer some solace but little consolation to the confines of single-track riding. Claustrophobia is not a regularly referenced noun in my vocabulary, but when the local fauna and flora of the Ganaraska Forest are a hair’s length from your body, and the trail is inches wider than the handlebars of your bike, it’s hard to ignore. The Medusa-like temptation to fixate on upcoming vegetation must be overcome. If you do happen to focus on them, it could be game over. “Oh, shoot, there’s a stum…” Thud. There goes the front end of your bike and probably you. If you look down, your handlebars might do a jig-like dance, and chances are, that’s where you end up. Down. Breathing through the anxiety is one way of conquering the trails. Another is a strong foundation in riding. But the most important of them all: vision. Before heading out onto the over 300 kilometres of trails nestled within the 11,000 acres of Ganaraska Forest, Trail Tours instructor Al gives my riding partner and I a lesson in a much less confining location. Thank goodness. Nestled in the heart of the seemingly limitless dirt biking and motorized vehicle playground is Trail Tours (www.trailtour.com.) It’s just over an hour’s drive east from Toronto and well worth the short-haul journey. After parking the car and walking a few paces through a trail, the world gets a little brighter. Literally and metaphorically. The sinewy trees – well, in comparison to west coast wood – that lead us to home base dotn’t let in a ton of light, so at the end of the trail, where Trail Tour’s open field training facility stands before me, the sun overflows like a perfectly-iced cake (you can never have too much icing.) Four ideas up for discussion Advisory design panel will decide on renovations The Oak Bay advisory design panel meeting has four property proposals on the agenda for its Oct. 7 meeting at municipal hall. They'll discuss 2527 Nottingham Rd. where the owners of a house under construction would like to have two accessory buildings a garage and workshop instead of the already OK'd garage/workshop building. Renovations and an addition to an

existing home at 2880 Lansdowne Rd. will also be up for discussion. New home construction for two lots, 648 Linkleas Ave. and 1220 Roslyn Rd. are also on the agenda. The Design Panel consists of five members, at least two of whom must be registered to practice under the Architects Act, the other three with professional experience and/ or qualifications in architecture, engineering, gardening, landscape design or the visual acts. Ferries to be converted to LNG B.C. Ferries is converting its pair of Spirit-class vessels to a dual-fuel system that uses liquefied natural gas, estimated to be half the price of marine diesel. The Spirit of Vancouver Island and Spirit of British Columbia are the workhorses of the Tsawwassen-Swartz Bay run, carrying a quarter of the fleet’s passengers and vehicles and accounting for about 15 per cent of the fuel used. The conversion will be part of their mid-life refit, aiming to save $9 million a year in fuel costs for their remaining 27 years of service. It is scheduled to be completed by the spring of 2017. The refits will also include a low-friction hull coating and modifications to the bow and stern to reduce drag. First-time home buyers are a rare bird in the District of Oak Bay. We’re more likely to see first time single family homeowners, or retirees looking for the ultimate lifestyle heading across our borders, says Miles Takacs of Re/Max Camosun on Oak Bay Ave. Oak Bay isn’t a first time buyer’s market place “That’s what’s driving the whole Langford boom,” he said. “It is a part of the city where people hope to finally end up. “There’s so many great things going on for it … with that comes really expensive real estate.” First time home buyers tend to go for the small inexpensive homes designed specifically for that market in the West Shore communities. “Would I love to find someone a home here? Absolutely. It’s a super safe part of the city.” However, you need the cash to make that work in this market. “It is almost unheard of in Oak Bay to find a house for under a half-million. Many first time buyers need the boost of having a suite or a renter,” he said. Takacs can identify a
