Valerie Hundert was a dedicated volunteer, community leader, mentor and advocate for Mission. She passed away Sunday, Sept. 21 at the age of 88. Valerie was born in Saskatchewan and raised in Ontario. She moved to Mission with her husband, Mel, in 1991, and almost immediately began volunteering in the community. She was a part of the Mission Artists Association, the Mission Arts Council, Mission Health Care Auxiliary and the Mission Heritage Association. One of her favourite places in Mission was Fraser River Heritage Park, which she helped develop with her vision and planning. She was named an ambassador-at-large for the park, and she volunteered and fundraised to improve it for
many years. Most recently, she helped organize a fundraising tea for the Rose Garden in June. Valerie received numerous awards, including the the B.C. Senior’s Award in 1997, Mission’s Citizen of the Year in 1998, and Woman of the Year Myrtle Evertt Award in 1999. She received Mission’s highest honour in 2002 when she was named a Freeman, and in 2012, she was given the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee medal. At the Muse Awards this year, Valerie earned a Lifetime Achievement award for her work with the arts community. Valerie leaves behind her husband, her four children, and three grandchildren. “She loved the community,” said her daughter, Joan, who thanked Mission for falling in love with her mom as well. CRMG names civic slate Mission’s only political slate has announced its candidates in the upcoming civic election. Led by incumbent Mayor Ted Adlem, the Citizens for Responsible Municipal Government (CRMG) team includes current councillors Dave Hensman and Larry Nundal, as well as Attila Davalovsky, Don Forsythe, Ronn Harris, and Bobby Brar. Adlem has lived in Mission for more than 30 years and owns Pete’s Place Pizza. He served on the Mission Regional Chamber of
Commerce Board before being elected as mayor in 2011. Adlem told The Record in June, “Under my leadership, the fiscal situation in the district has never been better.” Adlem and his wife have five children. Hensman has been a Mission resident for 16 years and ran for council for the first time in 2011. He is the owner of Big Sky Investment Corporation and is the pastor of a church group. Nundal has lived in Mission for 35 years. He worked as the director of
Goodbye to Murphy Mission Hospice Society’s pet therapy dog, Murphy, had an instinctive way of connecting with people at a time of illness and grief. But it is Murphy’s owners who are now saddened by his death. Murphy passed away Sept. 17 in his home near his loved ones, according to the society. Murphy and her owner Sandy Forward have been visiting patients and their family at the Christine Morrison Hospice in Mission for seven years. A celebration of life for Murphy will be held Sept. 29 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Mission

Davalovski has lived in Mission for 36 years. He worked as manager for Mission Springs for seven years before joining Boston Pizza recently. Forsythe has lived in Mission for 26 years. He has been in the real estate business for 25 years and is currently working with Canadian First Realty in Mission. Harris served as a Mission councillor for one term in the late 1980s. He ran is own construction business in Mission. Brar has lived in Mission since 1981. He served on the board of Mission Association for Community Living and is an advocate for universal access in Mission. He and his wife have two sons.

Hawes also stated the district’s current downtown revitalization plan is “unrealistic.” Instead of moving ahead with relocating the highway and building a plaza, the organizations need to
get together to address homeless and addiction problems. While those issues fall under Fraser Health and provincial jurisdiction, they are ultimately Mission’s problem. “Our problem will continue to get worse unless we pull the community together to deal with it. “We can do that by building files and talking to everyone, including the homeless to see what they need to get them out of the system.” Hawes believes staff morale at municipal hall is low and fears

A life lost due to weak laws
Raymond Caissie is the new face of a broken judicial system in Canada. A high-profile sex offender released from jail in 2013 after serving his full 22-year sentence for the horrific sexual assault of an Abbotsford museum worker, Caissie was this week charged with the murder of a 17-year-old Surrey girl. After getting out of prison in 2013, he broke his probation, was arrested and jailed in November, and was sentenced to three more months in jail in January. He was once again out in March, and placed on parole. He was considered by corrections officials to be a high risk to offend, and police issued public warnings that he was once again among the general population. He was living in Surrey until quite recently, and now he is back behind bars, accused of slaying a teenager on her way home from a

bus stop. As many politicians are now saying, after the fact, this man should not have been released from jail. However, there is no way he could have been held there, given the laws that are currently in place. He was not ruled a dangerous offender and did not have an indeterminate sentence. Getting those designations placed on a convicted individual is exceedingly dififcult. While it is unknown at this point how much monitoring was undertaken of Caissie after his release, the fact remains that he should never have gotten out of prison. For years, the public has been calling for dramatic changes to the laws in regard to high-risk offenders. And yet, the political will to do so is appallingly weak. An innocent teen is now dead as a result.

Concerns raised over Friendship Centre Tyler OLSEN

Two men say the Mission Friendship Centre (MFC) is breaching a “fundamental” rule of friendship centres by banning members. Jason Jenkins and Kristopher Eriksen staged protests outside the First Avenue friendship centre earlier this month. One such protest erupted in a verbal dispute that drew the attention of the police. No charges were laid in

the incident, according to Eriksen The pair, both of whom say they have been banned from the MFC, say the facility is offering fewer services and that dissenters like them are made to feel unwelcome or outright banned. The Record has spoken to several others who feel the same way but who wished to remain anonymous. Several people have complained about the centre to the British Columbia Association

of Aboriginal Friendship Centres (BCAAFC), which governs all such centres in the province. BCAAFC executive director Paul Lacerte said it is not uncommon for the organization to field complaints about friendship centres. Once the BCAAFC receives a complaint, Lacerte says it then works directly with the individual friendship centre to address any issues raised. Lacerte said friendship centres should not
be banning members or prohibiting them from entering a centre except to protect the safety of employees and other members. “One of the fundamental rules of being a friendship centre is … you are required to have an open-door policy, which means your door is open to everyone who is in need,” Lacerte said. Preventing violence or “various forms of aggression” is the only reason a person could be denied entry, he said.
Lacerte said the organization has been working with the Mission centre, and that the BCAAFC had sent members to participate in its recent annual general meeting. The friendship centre – which is partially funded by the Canadian government – hosts cultural programs, offers a daily hot meal during the week, and provides addiction counselling. Eriksen said he was banned in late 2012 after requesting the British
Columbia Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres – which oversees 25 such centres around the province – to investigate the Mission centre. He alleged nepotistic hiring practices for paid positions and said the number of services offered by the centre have decreased in recent years.

Jenkins has since started a petition calling for a special meeting to discuss the ongoing governance of the MFC. He has more than 80 signatures on his petition. But he said the centre’s executive director, Grace Cunningham, told him the petition “wasn’t valid.” Jenkins said a special meeting would serve “to give the members that utilize the friendship centre to have a voice to be heard.” Eriksen has complained to Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada, which last July said it decided “to conduct a recipient audit of the centre” during the fiscal year. Six months later, this January, Eriksen received another letter informing him that it had decided not to conduct the audit. It had been concluded that the ministry didn’t have the authority to investigate the “dayto-day management of individual friendship centres.” Eriksen also complained to Abbotsford MP Ed Fast, who said it would be inappropriate to become “politically involved” and that the BCAAFC should handle the complaints. According to Canada Revenue Agency, the MFC has active charity status, and in 2013, showed $601,909 in revenue, with $554,493 in expenditures. A total of $321,076 was spent on employee compensation. Cunningham said Eriksen’s banning complied with rules and that allegations that family members were being favoured were “off the wall.” “We have internal policies that we hire the best person for the position,” Cunningham said, noting she was removed from the hiring decision when her son applied for a position.

2014 Local Government Election We want you to vote! Our goal this November is to increase voter participation. 7,458 people voted in the last election, That’s a 31% voter turnout. Let’s grow that number.

The District is also pleased to offer language translation services at voting places. Officials will be fluent in English and Punjabi and can assist electors who need language translation services or help with marking ballots.

Aging can impair
driving ability The number of drivers 70 and over is predicted to triple in North America over the next 20 years. Research indicates that the older a person is, the higher the risk of driver accident or fatality. The risk posed by older drivers and the inevitable increase in older drivers on the road over the next two decades has sparked debate as to whether or not such drivers should be reexamined to ensure safety on the road? In 2003, an 86-year-old man unintentionally killed 10 people and injured more than 70 when he drove his car through a crowded farmer’s market in Santa Monica, Calif. In 2010, a 72-year-old Connecticut man faced vehicular manslaughter charges for allegedly striking and killing a motorcyclist. In 2012, an elderly man in Buffalo, N.Y. caused an accident resulting in three fatalities when
he traveled in the wrong direction on the New York State Thruway. Very frequently the local news is peppered with

reports of elderly drivers causing serious accidents. Some wonder if more stringent
requirements for elderly drivers would help the situation. Thirty-three states presently have legislation in place to ensure drivers can retain driving privileges once they reach a certain age. It’s important to note that, according to the National Safety Council, drivers over the age of 75 account for only 3.3 percent of accidents in the United States. Drivers age 25 to 34 account for the largest number of accidents, at nearly 20 percent. Some argue that these findings do not paint an accurate picture because senior

Though the debate about older drivers figures to remain a hot topic, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that aging can affect drivers in a number of ways. The physical and mental changes that accompany aging can have a profound impact on a person’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. Reaction times may be slower, hearing and vision loss
may affect driver awareness, loss of muscle strength and flexibility can make steering more difficult and medication can impair focus and/or concentration. Many senior centers and organizations offer programs that allow elderly drivers to brush up on their skills behind the wheel. Drivers also can contact their insurance companies to see if there are any sponsored classes they can take to reassess their skills and possibly lower their insurance premiums. AAA offers a Driver Improvement course and
suggests seniors find a car they can safely and comfortably operate. AAA also offers Roadwise Rx, a free online tool that provides confidential, individualized feedback about medication side effects and how these drugs may impact drivers on the road. AARP also offers a Driver Safety course. It also is important that senior drivers and their families familiarize themselves with local legislation to determine if driver refresher courses or retesting are necessary for older drivers to remain behind the wheel.

Moving ahead with the help of a mobility aid By Chrystal Robinson, Pharmacy Assistant There are many reasons why you might be unstable on your feet such as poor vision, chronic health conditions, surgery or the use of certain medications. You may need a mobility aid to assist you in your daily life. Picking out the right product for you may seem like a daunting task with so many brands, styles and options in stores to choose from. How do you know what product is right for you? Which cane or walker is best for you depends on many factors including balance, strength and physical fitness level. If you have a pain, a weakness or an injury on one side of your body that makes it difficult to walk a cane may be beneficial to you. If you have poor balance or feel unsteady on your feet, a walker would be more suited and may give you more support. If you have difficulty balancing or are at risk of falling, a walker can make getting around easier and safer. If stability is a
concern a standard walker without wheels would be a better choice. A standard walker must be picked up and moved with each step. If you do not need to lean on the walker for balance, a four wheel walker allows you to walk faster. Mobility devices can encourage confidence in taking an active part in strengthening your body to prevent falls and stay independent. Jim Hinds enters race Carol Aun
MISSION RECORD
A long-time Mission resident is making his first run for municipal office. Jim Hinds has lived in Mission for more than 30 years and has always kept a close eye on the operations at municipal hall. Public safety and Mission’s downtown revitalization plan are top priorities for Hinds in this year’s election. “For the last nine years, Mission has either cut the police budget or not added to it,” explained Hinds. “We are three to four officers understaffed and it has been that way for almost 10 years.” The district needs to bring the number of
police members up to the required levels and establish a presence downtown, according to Hinds. While Hinds believes Mission’s downtown area needs improvement, he is critical of the current plan the district wants to unfold. “We need to clean it up before we can pretty it up.” Hinds says taking truck traffic off First Avenue by moving the highway and introducing two-way traffic on the main street will cost millions of dollars and eliminate up to 100 parking stalls in the area. “They’ll have to to put in loading zones on both sides of the street.” Hinds, who worked for BC Hydro for 37 years,
is now semi-retired and works as an independent contractor with Electrical Energy Training Group. Hinds has worked in Mission since 1969, and has lived here since 1983. He began volunteering in the community three years later at the Mission Agricultural Fair and eventually served as its president. Hinds is involved with the Mission Arts Council Christmas Craft Fair Committee, Candlelight Parade, Mission Community Archives, Mission District Historical Society, Mission Community Heritage Commission, Mission Fest, Royal Canadian Legion branch 57, and BC Hydro Power Pioneers. He is married with three children.

Community Charter – Part 3, Division 2, Section 24 TAKE NOTICE that pursuant to Section 24 of the Community Charter, the District of Mission proposes to lease 3000 sq. ft. of space at the District owned building located at 7337 Welton Street to the Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech (SRCTec) for the development of a Technical Centre of Excellence (TCE) at the favorable lease rate of $5 per square foot per year on a gross lease basis, meaning payments are inclusive of basic rent and property taxes. In comparison, a market rate for this space is approximately $11 per square foot per year. The District of Mission intends to lease the property for a two year term, with an option to renew for three years, with an increase to the annual base rent of no greater than ten per cent. SRCTec is a not-for-profit organization governed by an operating board of directors, including representation from the Ministry of Agriculture in relation to an agriculture venture accelerator program being run within the TCE. The role of SRCTec is to actively attract technology companies to Mission and the Fraser Valley. The TCE will function as a hub for technology startups and new technology businesses to provide mentorship and access to expertise to accelerate growth, commercialization, and technology transfer. This aligns with the British Columbia Innovation Council’s mission to build British Columbia’s economy by accelerating the growth of BC ventures through the support of entrepreneurs and tech startups. Mission community builder Pam Alexis is seeking a seat on council in November. Alexis said she will bring balance to the council table and will work hard to make Mission a more liveable and vibrant community. “Our community leaders, including those at the council table, should encourage, enhance, and promote the initiatives we do well to instil pride in our community,” said Alexis. She believes more needs to be done to help young families, which make up most of Mission’s population. Directing more dollars towards parks and recreation programming can encourage citizens to get involved while making the community a more liveable place for that age group, she said. Alexis, who conducted a survey about local seniors for the province’s Better at Home program, also understands the needs of the elderly. She suggested the new seniors centre in Mission should be a mixed use facility to help recover costs and bring different demographics together. Alexis served as the vice-president of the 2014 BC Winter Games in Mission, and is on numerous boards and committees in the community. She is the vice-president of the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce and is a member of the Rotary Club. She has received four Paul Harris Service Awards, the Myrtle Evertt Woman of the Year Award and most recently, an Exceptional Accomplishment and Leadership Awards from the District of Mission. Residents fed up with noise Carol Aun

Ledcor Resources and Transportation Ltd. will have to find a way to reduce the noise at its current Silverdale facility before it can expand. Mission council voted unanimously to withhold third reading of a zoning amending bylaw that would increase Ledcor’s current operations at 29960 Lougheed Highway by adding a second barge loading facility on adjacent lands. Residents in the area alerted municipal hall to the noise and dust issues last month at a separate public hearing on creating a new zone to accommodate businesses with barge loading facilities along the Fraser River. Ledcor is located west of Chester Street on the south side of the Lougheed Highway on a property about 15 acres in size. According to a district staff report, the operation barges hog fuel to Port Mellon for electrical power generation, and wood chips to make kraft pulp for paper products. Trucks unload at the
site any time during the day or night, and according to those who live nearby, it’s not uncommon for operators to bang the trailers at 3 a.m. to get the last bit of product out of the containers. To demonstrate what the activity sounds like, Jamie Mitchell, who lives north of the existing facility, beat a metal barrel with a hammer 10 times inside council chambers. The banging occurs 24/7 year round, not just in the winter when hog fuel can freeze to the trailers, he said. “It’s frustrating,” added Mitchell, noting the constant interruption to his sleep takes a toll on his health and sleeping habits. Mitchell has lived in the area for the past 15 years, but believes the noise and dust levels have become worse over the past three or four years. Marueen Rattary, who has lived in the area for 26 years, also agrees. She told council of the night she couldn’t put up with the noise any more and blocked the entrance to
the driveway for trucks. None of the half-dozen speakers opposed the business Monday night, but instead, asked the company to find ways to reduce noise and dust coming from the facility. District staff say the noise is predominantly related to the tipping and bumping of trucks to remove the hog fuel. In the past, the company has had staff remove remaining material by hand with a shovel, but project manager Ryan Finch notes there are safety concerns with that practice. “It’s more safe to bump
the trailers than to have someone go inside and shovel it out,” explained Finch. He noted about 40 per cent of Ledcor’s current business is hog fuel, and doesn’t expect much more banging to occur with the expansion because the new facility would only accommodate wood chips which is less likely to stick to trailers. Ledcor is looking at a number of options to reduce the current noise, and noted reducing hours of operation could be detrimental to the business.

There is an old story, perhaps apocryphal, about an architect asking the workmen at a cathedral what they were doing. When St. Francis was a young man and was struggling over what to do with his life, he had a conversation experience while praying in an old church. He heard God tell him to rebuild “My church,” and taking this message literally, he set to work repairing the decrepit old church. Before long, others joined him in the work and decided to follow his charismatic example of trying to live the gospel as literally as possible. Only then, did it become clear that the noble work of rebuilding this small church was part of the larger work of rebuilding the spiritual church. Creation is the ongoing work of God in the world, and we are all called to be coworkers in this great work. So, whatever you do for a living, realize that it is part of a much larger project than it might first appear. It is larger than mixing mortar, or even than building a church. Indeed it is even larger than rebuilding the spiritual church of God; for we are all engaged in the ongoing work of creation itself.

You may need a mobility aid to assist you in your daily life. Picking out the right product for you may seem like a daunting task with so many brands, styles and options in stores to choose from. How do you know what product is right for you? Which cane or walker is best for you depends on many factors including balance, strength and physical fitness level. If you have a pain, a weakness or an injury on one side of your body that makes it difficult to walk a cane may be beneficial to you. If you have poor balance or feel unsteady on your feet, a walker would be more suited and may give you more support. There are nine holes in the course that range from 200 to 400 feet. The first hole is located near the tennis courts. The course is a par 27 course, with each hole being par three. The best score recorded so far is two-under, according to Henderson, who admitted his best score is par. The first holein-one was achieved this past weekend by Hatzic’s Derek Field on hole six.
The sport is inexpensive and fun to play, said Henderson. The only thing needed to play is a disc. “Discs range from 150 to 180 grams, and there are all types of companies that make them,” said Henderson. “You carry a bag and a selection of discs as you play.” Discs have different flight characteristics. Some are designed to curve, while others are simply for distance. Mission’s course can be completed in less than two hours.
To help increase membership for the Fraser Valley Disc Golf Club, this Saturday’s opening will include a fundraising tournament with several categories. “I hesitate to call it a tournament because tournaments are more geared towards professionals,” explained Henderson. “I just want people to play it. I want to keep it very simple and don’t want people to be intimidated.” There are two rounds of 18 to choose from. The first tee-off is at
10:30 a.m., and the second is at 1:30 p.m. The divisions are open, advanced, amateur, novice, and kids 10 and under. There will be prizes for each category. Entry fee is $35 per round and players must check in 30 minutes prior to the start of the competition. Players registered will received a players pack, which includes a membership to the club and a commemorative disc for the Centennial Park disc golf course. The ribbon cutting ceremony to officially open the course begins at 10 a.m. Henderson, who began playing the sport in the 1983, estimates there are more than 30 active disc golfers in Mission, and hopes there will be more when the new course opens. One nice hot sunny day in August found me in the Upper Squamish valley, four wheeling and fishing along the river. I was warned there were bears in the area popped up, he was down again and out of sight. I wanted to make sure he was gone before I moved on, so I gave a toot on my horn. Up goes the massive bear again looking around. He was a lot closer this time, so I laid into the horn and revved up my engine. At first he continued to stand tall but soon realized it wasn’t worth the effort to continue. He darted off and I watched him head back towards the river. I continued on the road for another 10 minutes and around a tight corner, still thinking about the bear when all of a sudden I see a big patch of black sprinting in front of my truck. I eased up on the throttle and watched another bear running down the road. He was quite scared so I gave him lots of room. He jumped off the road and down a steep hill taking out several small trees on the way down. I felt a little sorry for him having to do that. I couldn’t see him anymore but I was sure he was okay. The idea of fishing was suddenly less appealing. Two bears in one day were enough. I usually do not see any. The two-hour drive back produced another four bears in different positions along the road. The moral of this story four-wheeling is fun but be careful out there, especially in bear country . . . which is virtually everywhere in B.C. ian.harwood@drivewaybc.ca

For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, I’ve been writing about cars for over 25 years and I’m a long-term member of the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). My auto background is mainly in the service side of the industry as I’ve always had a keen interest in knowing how things work. Especially those oily, greasy parts that make the wheels go around. My first car was an early sixties Triumph Herald Coupe (web example photo) that was traded-in to a dealership where I worked as an apprentice auto mechanic, back in Dublin, Ireland. It spent more time off the road, being repaired, than on the road, during my time as its owner. A Herald had the same chassis and a similar powertrain as the much nicer looking Triumph Spitfire, which was sold in North America. At the BC Automobile Association I initially worked as a mobile Vehicle Inspector in the Vehicle Inspection Service. The vehicle was an AMC Gremlin and it was painted to look like a cut-away or skeleton view of the car’s mechanical bits. A small car with a big gas-guzzling engine, a Gremlin was an odd choice of vehicle for that job and the paint job just added to its weirdness, yet I grew to like it. Currently I enjoy serving on the AJAC Technology Awards panel and have also been involved in the promotion of trade skills training for young people in BC. When time permits, I still like to get my hands dirty and give my son a helping hand with, his pride and joy, a 1966 Ford Thunderbird coupe. bob.mchugh@drivewaybc.ca

GOERZEN Herta Herta Johanna Goerzen entered the gates of Heaven September 17th, 2014. She is survived by her children, Betty (Jack), Cathy, Susan (Gordon), Peggy, Peter (Marilyn), Paul (Casey), David (Joy), and Reuben (Val); 18 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters (Elsie and Hilda); other relatives, and many friends. Herta was predeceased by her husband, Abe (1988); two sons, Arthur (1949) and Hank (1988); and grandson, Tyrel (2010). Her primary career was that of wife and mother. When her youngest child began elementary school, she embarked on her 25 year career in Canada Post, retiring as Mount Lehman Post Master in 1992. Herta’s hands were never still. She loved driving, knitting and crochet, reading, puzzles, and visiting, continuing many of these activities until this summer. A celebration of her life was held at Cedar Valley Mennonite Church on September 23rd, 2014. Donations may be made to Mission Hospice Society, Mission, BC. John Paul Kocsis aged 51 years passed away suddenly on September 10, 2014. John was an amazing person and hard worker. He spent most of his career working as a logger and became well known and respected throughout BC. Frances Margaret May “Marjorie” (nee Costen) 1917 ~ 2014
It is with sorrow we must announce the quiet passing of Betty Watson on September 14th, 2014 at Tabor Home in Abbotsford, at the age of 94. Betty was much loved and will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Her family includes locals Tina and Gerry Jensen, Diane Gilbraith, and Terence Gilbraith; as well as daughters Coral and Pearl in England; plus many grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews in BC, Washington, Nevada, Alberta, England, and Australia. Betty was predeceased by Jess, her adoring husband of 34 years in 1989; and by her 7 younger siblings. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff of Tabor Home for their loving care of Betty during the last years of her life. After a long and meaningful life, our dear mother and grandmother passed away peacefully in her sleep on September 22 in her 97th year. She will be lovingly remembered by her five children, Lois (George) Gray, Sharon (John) Sutherland, Murray Martin, Esther (David) Robins, Graham (Wendy) Martin, fourteen grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren, as well as her two sisters-inlaw, Betty Costen and Annie Martin, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Jake, and brothers, Ray and Don Costen. Mom was born in Boissevain, Manitoba in 1917 and raised in villages in southeast Manitoba. She moved to Ottawa during WWII to work for the government. There she met our dad, Jacob M. Martin, married, and raised our family. At the same time, she supported his dedicated work as owner and manager of Scripture Bookstore. Mom taught us the value of walking with God, the importance of a good work ethic, and the joy of living for others. She modeled stoicism and faith. Even through the months of her final illness, she showed acceptance, patience, and grace. Our family wishes to thank Dr. Ken Dueck of Abbotsford for the patient and loving care he gave to our mother over the last many years, and Dr. Peter Barnsdale of Mission who supervised Mom’s care when she moved to The Residence in Mission in April. A heartfelt thank you also goes to the staff at TRiM, especially the Stave Falls neighborhood, who lovingly cared for Mom in the frailty of her last months. A tribute to Mom’s life will be held in Ottawa on October 4. “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.” Psalms 30:5 We’ll see you in the morning, Mom! Valerie Lee (Marlow) Hundert Valerie Lee (Marlow) Hundert, an energetic volunteer and devoted citizen of Mission, passed away on September 21, 2014 at the Christine Morrison Hospice, Mission, with her husband of 51 years, Melvern Hundert, and family members at her side. She was 88. She was born Oct. 2, 1925 in Milestone, Sask., the daughter of Marion Lee Young and Robert Alexander Marlow, and sister to Ken Marlow of St. Albert, Alta., all of whom have predeceased her. Valerie was raised in Simcoe, Ont. where after high school; she completed a Secretarial Business Course and later graduated in home economics from MacDonald Institute, Ontario Agricultural College (Guelph) in 1947. In London Ont., Valerie worked for CFPL radio and television stations. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to open her first shop Craft Cottage in Springbank Park, London. In Toronto, where she married Mel, she worked in advertising before returning to her passion – operating an antique shop ‘The Emporium’ in Toronto and later in Brooklin, Ont. She also began her volunteer career spending many years in community service in Brooklin and Whitby. Once Valerie and Mel went west to Mission in 1991, they never looked back. Valerie immediately became actively involved in a number of community groups, including the Mission Artists’ Assn, the Mission Arts Council, the Mission Hospital Auxiliary (Cottage Thrift Shop) and the Mission-Kent Liberal Assn. She was a founding member of the Heritage Association and through her visionary planning and creative collaborations; she became a driving force in developing Fraser River Heritage Park. Valerie’s volunteer contributions have been recognized with a number of awards, including : MUSE Lifetime Achievement Award (2014) presented by the District of Mission Cultural Resources Commission; the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee award (2012), District of Mission Freeman of the City Award (2002), Myrtle Evrett Award – Woman of the Year (1999) , Citizen of the Year (1998), BC Seniors Award (1997) . Valerie is survived by her husband, Melvern Hundert, and four children – Lee Allison Howe (Patrick), Toronto; John Allison (Joanne), Langley; Joan Allison, Toronto; and Paul Hundert, Toronto. She is also survived by three grandchildren – Jennifer Allison and Angela Boyce (Ryan) of BC; and Julia Howe of Toronto. Her generous, fun-loving spirit will be missed by her family and her many loyal friends. Valerie’s philosophy was: “I bloom where I am planted”. We know that she will continue to bloom in our hearts and inspire us to “think of others”. SITE OPERATIONS ATTENDANT CONTRACT The Fraser Valley Regional District is requesting proposals from interested parties for the operation of the Harrison Mills Transfer Station. The transfer station provides garbage and recycling services to the local community and is located at 14050 Chehalis Forest Service Road in Harrison Mills on the north side of highway #7 (Lougheed Highway).
