Belmont secondary principal Ray Miller has a good way to make a connection with Grade 9 and 10 students. At an assembly Monday morning, he offered the teens two personal facts about himself: one, that he’s a huge Toronto Maple Leafs hockey fan; and two, that on his next birthday, he’ll be 14, the same age many of them are now (his birthday is Feb. 29). In his office on Tuesday, the first full day of school for all students, Miller acknowledged the teachers strike created challenges for everyone involved, from educators to students to parents. “We’ve all lost something. This is like a grieving process and we have to help people go through it,” he said, adding that good communications are key. “(As administrators) we support our teachers and it’s really important that we keep a good relationship with our staff.” Miller and his fellow administrators did their best to simplify things for the startup, he said, to enable students and staff to have less time to adjust to the schedule. He voiced pride in the fact the school pulled together the necessary components of a school year startup in just two days. “We wanted to hit the ground running so the kids could get into a healthy routine, and that goes for the adults in the building as well.”

Hospitality community rallies around injured woman Darcy’s hosting benefit concert for staffer who’s part of the ‘family’ Angela Cowan News Gazette staff

Tanelle Bolt’s life changed forever this August when she jumped into the Gordon River from an overhead bridge and broke her mid-back, suffering severe spinal cord damage. Since her recent prognosis of life in a wheelchair, Bolt’s family, friends and her workmates at Darcy’s Pub have rallied in support around her. The West Shore pub and restaurant is hosting a benefit concert Oct. 5 to help Bolt with medical costs that are quickly mounting. Manager Justin Sparks said he happened to be talking to a regular customer who’s also in a wheelchair, and began to realize how expensive the whole situation could become for Bolt, especially if she’s not able to work for some time. “It costs way more than you think,” Sparks said. “You get some funding, but even a decent

wheelchair can cost $8,000. I thought I at least wanted to fundraise enough to help (Tanelle) get a wheelchair.” Sparks started putting together the concert with the goal of raising the needed cash. He got a huge boost when mutual friend Alexa Palmer told him of a grant offered by the B.C. Hospitality Foundation, an organization that offers financial assistance to those in the industry trying to cope with a health or medical crisis. “Usually they donate between $3,500 and $5,000,” Sparks said. But after speaking with CEO Alan Sacks about Bolt’s extreme circumstances, the foundation offered to match the fundraiser’s donations up to $10,000. “It’s huge,” said Sparks, adding he’s incredibly grateful for their support. The Sunday night benefit concert runs from 6 p.m. to midnight and features performances by Jesse Roper, Sam Weber, Bucko & Toad and Johnny Galactic. So far more than $5,000 worth of items have been donated for a silent auction by dozens of local and provincial companies, including a pair of tickets for next year’s SunFest with stage passes to meet Keith Urban.

Greg Adams, founder of the music festival, also plans to donate $2,500 at the benefit, which will go a long way towards achieving the fundraising goal, Sparks said. Having known Bolt for about three years, he said she’s always been very hardworking and disciplined and always eager to lend a hand. “She has a very positive attitude and lots of energy. She’s a very ambitious young woman,” he said. “She’s part of the family,” added fellow Darcy’s manager Danielle Dekay. “She would do anything for us in the same regard.” For her part, Bolt is trying to make it over for the benefit, though she’s still currently in rehab in Vancouver. “She’s trying,” said Sparks. “Her goal is to be here for it.” A free shuttle to Langford will leave the Wharf Street Darcy’s location at 6:30 p.m. It makes the return trip downtown at 11:30. A lot of people join Toastmasters to get over a paralyzing fear of public speaking. The mere thought of standing up in front of a crowd can make their palms sweat, heartbeats thunder and voices crack and rise. And so they step through the doors to a meeting, trembling fear held tightly in check, to overcome the challenge of oration. And while Toastmasters is a spectacular and supportive venue to overcome that fear, it’s also an effective tool and training ground for the next step. Once the fear is conquered, Toastmasters helps its members hone the craft and art of speaking. It’s that practice that has kept Victor Lindal coming back for 40 years. “I was Canada’s national women’s volleyball coach and a high school teacher, so I didn’t have trouble with public speaking,” says Lindal, currently a member of the Royal Roads Toastmasters. “I wanted to learn how to organize a speech.” The 77-year-old learned how to write an intriguing introduction, how to structure his talking points and how to wrap everything up with an impassioned call to action. The Toastmasters family helped him continually strengthen his skills, and in 1980, Lindal made it to the worldwide

On a less international, but no less influential scale, Goldstream Toastmasters member Fred Jones, a computer software salesman, says it’s entirely because of the group that he’s so involved with his community. “I knew no one here, not one person, when I first arrived,” says Jones, who moved from Toronto in 2008. “I now know hundreds of people in Victoria and I’m also involved in other activities in the community, and it’s all because of Toastmasters.” Not only did he find his business communication and professionalism improved, Jones’ relationships with family and friends also benefitted, as did his willingness to step outside his comfort zone. “It helps you in many ways. It helps you help other people,” he

says. “And it gives you a lot of self-confidence to do things you would probably never do.” With members often sharing a lot about themselves and their lives, there’s a deep connection forged and members often know each other better than anyone else in their lives, says Jones. Lindal, who’s worked as a personal coach for more than 20 years, says the key is to attend a meeting as a guest first. “Observe what goes on, see how you enjoy the people and what happens there,” he says. “As you get more comfortable with what’s going on, you gradually say, ‘I could join this club.’” There are three Toastmasters groups on the West Shore: Goldstream, Royal Roads and the ‘Chosin Chatters’ in Metchosin. Debby Volk has lived in Metchosin for years, but when she joined the ‘Chatters,’ she met a whole new group of people, she says. “It’s a good group. Everyone is very friendly and supportive.” Volk joined just last year to finally put a long-held fear of public speaking to rest, and says she’s definitely making progress. “I’m still getting my feet wet.” The Goldstream group meets Mondays at 7 p.m. in the secondfloor boardroom of Westhills Arena, 1097 Langford Pkwy. Metchosin meets Tuesdays at 7 p.m. at the Metchosin Community House, 4430 Happy Valley Rd. Royal Roads meets Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in Hatley Castle. Personnel changes made at your Gazette newspaper Christine Scott promoted to publisher, other new faces in Langford office With fall now upon us, the winds of change are blowing through the Goldstream News Gazette. Among the most significant is the recent naming by Black Press of Christine Scott as publisher of the Gazette. Having spent the past six years as sales manager for the newspaper, she takes on new duties in addition to working closely with existing clients and helping new ones, along with fellow advertising consultant Shelley Westwood. “I just feel we can make a difference for businesses out here,” says Scott, a nine-year Black Press veteran and Metchosin resident. The new position will see her play an even greater role in the community, a scenario for which she is excited. “In a world where we’re centralizing everything, it’s nice to have a person locally that peo-

Province faces growth challenges Statistics Canada’s latest population projections do not bode well for B.C.’s future, on a number of counts. The federal agency has B.C. falling to the fourth-largest province in the country, with Alberta moving ahead of it to third. B.C.’s population This change growth not being is projected to happen over the sustained in next 20 years or so. economic ways B.C. will still be growing, but at a lesser rate than Alberta is projected to grow. Perhaps more dramatically though, B.C.’s population of seniors is expected to grow the most, to 27 per cent of the population by 2038. This is a higher-than-usual percentage of seniors, who for the most part will not be working and contributing to long-term economic growth. At the same time, they will put added pressure on the health care system. This is not to say that seniors are bad for a province or an economy. It is simply that their needs bring new challenges to an economy which is already hobbled by minimal growth, and to a province where every resource-based proposal is met with a fury of opposition. A province cannot thrive long-term without economic growth. Simple population growth is not enough. B.C. is already a very expensive place to live. Anyone who has tried to buy a home in Greater Victoria can attest to that fact. At the same time, few younger people have the opportunity to make really good incomes, and are thus handicapped from getting ahead. They often choose to leave the province for the promise of better paying jobs. Taxes in B.C. are already quite high, which is masked by the sleight-of-hand about low income tax rates. However, when the seven-per-cent PST, ICBC rates, ferry fares, B.C. Hydro rates (all of which are tax increases), TransLink taxes and MSP premiums are taken into account, taxes are quite onerous on many people already. Low economic growth will inevitably lead to even higher taxes. B.C.’s weather and scenery are great, but they don’t pay the bills.

Columnist must be a smart guy Re: Off to school, and off to court (B.C. Views, Sept. 17) I must commend you on having Tom Fletcher on your staff. In past articles he has shown how he is smarter than all those scientists, including Nobel Prize winners, who think they have proven that human actions are effecting our climate and that something should be done about it. Now in Wednesday’s paper he suggests he understands our laws better than a sitting judge. And how dare the BCTF present “arguments that are technical,” everyone knows that the legal system has nothing to do with technical points it is all about grand statements on justice. Mining is important to British Columbia As mayors and councillors from cities all over B.C. meet at the annual Union of B.C. Municipalities conference in Whistler next week, it is a good time to remind ourselves that our rural, resource-based towns and communities have little in the way of economic diversity and rely largely on our natural resources such as mining. It is time for us to stop thinking only about ourselves in the province’s urban centers and to start thinking about what the lives of rural B.C. families would be like if we did not support mining and mineral exploration. For example, mining now contributes over $9 billion to B.C.’s economy, and exploring for mineral deposits is a major source of safe, sustainable economic activity for rural communities and the families who live in them. The mining industry in B.C. is responsible for 45,700 permanent jobs and generated more than $930 million in government tax revenue last year, including $74 million generated directly for local municipalities. Over the next 10 years, it is estimated that new growth in mining and exploration will require 20,000 new workers. I am sure that, at some point, the deliberations of those assembled at the UBCM will turn to the recent Mount Polley incident. I urge the delegates to resist the urge to jump on the Mount Polley bandwagon. It would be a shame if they were to

use the incident as a justification to do harm to the industry, potentially even trying to shut it down. Mining provides some of the highest paying jobs in B..C, and our province is geologically wealthy. I urge the mayors and councillors attending UBCM to think of those families who rely on the jobs created by mining. The jobs the industry creates will keep our children and grandchildren closer to home, support local small businesses and strengthening our communities for generations to come. But what needs to happen is there needs to be a signal from the government saying we need this, we need to reduce tax breaks for oil and gas and move those into renewables.” Some European countries including Norway and Belgium require the use of ESG criteria by law to reduce risk in pension funds. Canada currently does not. “(There are) a lot of people with lots of money who want to invest this way, but there is hesitancy with how the government will react,” Whipp said. “World investors are coming to the table and we are looking for the governments of the world to do the same thing.” alim@goldstreamgazette.com

He just points to fossil fuels as a transitional fuel source, as opposed to the only source of energy – and rolls that thought process into investment choices as well. Whipp said however, if the government were to help strengthen regulatory support for energy efficiency, phase out subsidies for fossil fuels and support innovation of low-carbon technologies, including financing clean energy research and development, it would go a long

A West Shore investment advisor is pushing for responsible investing across the world. Stephen Whipp claims to be the only retail investment advisor in Canada to have signed the Global Investor Statement on Climate Change. The document, signed by more than 300 major financial firms, was delivered to government leaders at this week’s United Nations Climate Summit, in hopes of directing investment in an environmentally friendlier direction. “The world is changing and this whole climate issue is another step. The big problem is we don’t have policy incentives. We don’t know where governments are going,” Whipp said. “There’s a lot of talk, but there is little in the way of policy and legislation. Investors like certainty.” The 24-year Langford resident keeps a keen eye on Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) criteria when looking at investment options. Not only are such investments better for the planet and everyone involved, they can also be a lower-risk option that can pay off financially, he said. “A lot of the large pension funds are using these very criteria to determine whether the companies are up to snuff,” he said. “What we are finding is that is reducing risk. If you invest in a gold mine in South America and there were human rights issues, their share price is going to go down.” He also pointed to the steep drop in prices of British Petroleum shares, following the controversial oil rig explosion in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010, as another environmentally and financially disastrous example of why responsible investing should not only be the example, but the norm. “When I started looking at

Analyst stands by report on B.C. ferry fare impact Black Press

The author of a study that estimates rising ferry fares have seriously damaged the provincial economy is standing by his conclusions in the face of sharp criticism from Transportation Minister Todd Stone. Peter Larose projected 31 million more passengers would have taken B.C. Ferries over the last 10 years had the province kept fare hikes to the rate of inflation. He pegged the losses at $2.3 billion in economic activity and $610 million in taxes to various levels of government. “I have extreme confidence in the results,” Larose said, adding they are more likely an underestimate. “I think it’s probably significantly higher.” He spoke to a policy session at the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention in Whistler Tuesday after Stone issued a letter and took to the airwaves to condemn the UBCM-sponsored study. “It is unfortunate that the analysis speculates on what might have been, rather than providing any concrete solutions on how to take the coastal ferry system into the future in a cost effective and sustainable way,” Stone said in a Sept. 19 letter to UBCM’s president. The minister said the study failed to properly consider various factors, from the effects of the 2008-09 global recession to rising fuel prices and demographic changes. He said it was “irresponsible” and “unproductive” for UBCM to release the “unsubstantiated and sensational” estimates.

Stone’s letter also said the analysis was flawed because it assumed all the money not spent due to reduced ferry travel went out of the province, instead of being spent in B.C. in other ways. Larose sought to reassure UBCM delegates that his projection is correct and doesn’t mean the economic damage in coastal B.C. is being offset by gains in other parts of the province. But Tofino Coun. Ray Thorogood questioned that logic, arguing Lower Mainland residents deterred from a trip to Vancouver Island by high fares might instead head east to the Okanagan. “We’re not saying this is the be all and end all of all analysis,” said Campbell River Coun. Claire Moglove, who sits on the UBCM committee that commissioned the work. She said the aim is to do further work and engage the province in a real dialogue on stemming the decline in BC Ferries ridership. “What we want from the provincial government is to sit down and start talking about solutions.” Moglove added that UBCM decided to probe the impact of high fares because the province wouldn’t. Volkswagen has had an impressive ride here during the past few years, gaining market share and selling record numbers of cars – its best-selling car being the Jetta. When the last VW Jetta was introduced in 2011, it represented a major shift in the company’s sales philosophy. The decision was to make a larger sedan, yet drop the price to compete right in the heart of Canada’s compact segment, our largest sales category. With a starting price under $15,000 the Jetta is the biggest car in the compact class, offering a gateway into owning a German car, yet having the space and comfort North Americans expect. For 2015 VW continues with the same philosophy but ups the ante to include new engines, styling and interior amenities.

It would be easy to overlook the substantial updates to this new Jetta because the exterior tweaks are so subtle they need pointing out. The front grille, bumper and headlamps have all been replaced to include a bigger air opening and LED marker lights, plus xenon headlights are available. The back also receives a minor update that includes a new bumper, trunk and tail lamps. With a starting price of $14,990, the Trendline comes with hubcaps on 15-inch wheels. The midlevel $20,090 Comfortline can be equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels and the $25,490 Highline is fitted with 17-inch alloys. Then there are the TDI diesel versions that range from $22,490 to $27,790. Volkswagen has a wide range of prices, equipment and engine choices to suit. The most popular is the Trendline Plus at $17,190 that includes the must have…heated front seats!

What isn’t obvious on first inspection is just how far the Jetta interior has come unless you know the previous model. It was a practical car but hardly luxurious or even sporty – spartan might be a good word. That has all changed with the new 2015 model thanks to new switches and dials that look and feel first rate. The drive event for the all-new Jetta was held in Middleburg Virginia, which I later discovered is in the wealthiest county in the United States. Huge homes on rolling farms, with stone fences and colonial designs reminds visitors that this is historic country; Middleburg witnesses action during the Gettysburg campaign of the American Civil War. The Salamander Resort was the backdrop for the introduction, an equestrian themed luxury resort that would make any new car look good. Surrounding it are rolling hills and winding roads, a perfect place to exercise the new suspension and engines in the Jetta. The previous car was recently updated to a full independent suspension and that carries over, as do disc brakes on all four wheels. The big news is a new 1.8L direct injection, turbocharged 4-cylinder with 170hp but an impressive 185 lb.-ft of torque. After driving both the new engines back to back I’d be hard pressed to choose. I love the torque of the diesel and the impressive efficiency. (It is rated at just 6.7L/100km in the city and 4.7L on the highway.) But the new turbo gasoline engine is a more spirited unit that provides a more enthusiastic experience. This engine delivers 8.1L/100km in the city and 5.6L on the highway. If I drove a lot, the diesel would be the way to go, but for more, fun the new 1.8L is impressive. Still in the mix is the old 2.0L 4-cylinder with 115hp offered in all Trendline and Comfortline models. This engine has been around since Moses was a boy, but it is a proven engine and offers a great starting price. At first glance the 2015 Jetta looks like a warmed over update but below the surface is substantial change. The highlights are the new interior and wonderful optional engines. After practicing in the various loops – there are different areas of their facility that cater to different techniques – it was off to the practice trail. Needless to say, I was not setting any speed records but it wasn’t about speed. That comes with time and experience. It was getting used to the fact that I didn’t have a lot of wiggle room and that my mind would want to play tricks on me if I didn’t relax, let the bike and myself breathe, and enjoy the best that machine and Mother Nature have to offer. Day 2 was a game changer. I was so happy that I did some basic skills the day before because I embraced the various tones and textures of the perpetually evolving geography around me. Rocks, gravel, soil, sand (oh, there was a lot of sand), steep inclines, tree stumps, sharp corners, you name it, the Ganaraska Forest has it. Though I didn’t go at it alone. Groups were organized by skill level and were lead by individuals who know that forest like the back of their hand. Heck, I would have been lost after the first two turns. If you found that throughout the day you wanted

a more advanced riding, or wanted to take it easier, movement between groups was entirely possible. The name of the game there is safety, with fun at an extremely close second. “Remember, the trees don’t move,” coaches Al Lakas, chief instructor at Trail Tours. These words offer some solace but little consolation to the confines of single-track riding. Claustrophobia is not a regularly referenced noun in my vocabulary, but when the local fauna and flora of the Ganaraska Forest are a hair’s length from your body, and the trail is inches wider than the handlebars of your bike, it’s hard to ignore. The Medusa-like temptation to fixate on upcoming vegetation must be overcome. If you do happen to focus on them, it could be game over. “Oh, shoot, there’s a stum…” Thud. There goes the front end of your bike and probably you. If you look down, your handlebars might do a jig-like dance, and chances are, that’s where you end up. Down. Breathing through the anxiety is one way of conquering the trails. Another is a strong foundation in riding. But the most important of them all: vision. Before heading out onto the over 300 kilometres of trails nestled within the 11,000 acres of Ganaraska Forest, Trail Tours instructor Al gives my riding partner and I a lesson in a much less confining location. Thank goodness. Nestled in the heart of the seemingly limitless dirt biking and motorized vehicle playground is Trail Tours (www.trailtour.com.) It’s just over an hour’s drive east from Toronto and well worth the short-haul journey. After parking the car and walking a few paces through a trail, the world gets a little brighter. Literally and metaphorically. The sinewy trees – well, in comparison to west coast wood – that lead us to home base dotn’t let in a ton of light, so at the end of the trail, where Trail Tour’s open field training facility stands before me, the sun overflows like a perfectly-iced cake (you can never have too much icing.) This year’s annual Bite-Me fishing derby netted $10,000 to support salmon conservation, with derby committee president Richard Jones presenting a cheque to Robert Gamache, president of the Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society this week. The derby celebrated its 20th anniversary this year and has raised more than $143,000 over the last two decades for salmon conservation, to ensure the continued future of sport fishing. The Sooke Salmon Enhancement Society at the Jack Brooks Hatchery raise coho and chinook fry for the Sooke River. More than just saving fish, the

derby is also helping to save lives. This year, with the contributions of several generous Victorians, the derby was able to provide automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to five local marinas, including Pedder Bay. The initiative was the brainchild of Bite-Me derby committee member Ted Litster, who actually experienced being shocked back to life in January of last year. He realized that had his attack happened on his boat in Pedder Bay, he likely wouldn’t have survived. And continuing from last year, in an effort to support their local community, the derby began processing the top three winning fish and donating them to the West Shore food bank to help fill up Christmas hampers. acowan@goldstreamgazette.com

Society, which argued that “electrohypersensitivity” (EHS) is a disability. “I have concluded that there is no reasonable prospect that the complainants will be able to establish that the electromagnetic frequency (EMF) exposure resulting from smart meters results in adverse health consequences,” wrote tribunal member Norman Trerise in the decision not to hold a full hearing. The society submitted that it doesn’t have to prove this sensitivity exists, because the Human Rights Tribunal has accepted “subjective self-reporting of symptoms” in a previous human rights case involving a Lower Mainland bus driver. The society also cited a Prince Edward

Island Court of Appeal decision that stated “a person may be ill even though there is little or no objective evidence to prove it.” B.C. Hydro said a series of doctors’ notes supplied by the complainants don’t prove the condition is real, because they appear to be based “entirely on the self-diagnosis of the individual complainants.” B.C. Hydro has argued that the exposure from periodic wireless meter signals to send electricity consumption data to collection stations is similar to exposure to radio station signals. B.C. Hydro said the Human Rights Tribunal doesn’t have jurisdiction over the wireless grid project, and the B.C. Utilities Commission does. The B.C. government’s

2010 Clean Energy Act mandated the wireless grid upgrade, and exempted it from review by the BCUC. But in 2013 the BCUC reviewed the wireless grid project by FortisBC in the Okanagan and Kootenay region, and rejected CSTS submissions that the technology was a health hazard. CSTS argued that B.C. Hydro’s offer to relocate the wireless meter to another part of the property was not sufficient relief, and charging meter reading fees to those who want to keep their mechanical meter or have a wireless digital meter turned off is discrimination against people with a disability. editor@goldstream gazette.com

Former football pro slides in nicely with rugby vets Jesse Lumsden could be preparing for yet another transition Don Descoteau News Gazette staff

From football to bobsledding to … rugby? Former Canadian Football League running back and Olympic bobsledder Jesse Lumsden was in Langford this week, participating in two days of workouts with the national senior men’s sevens rugby team. After some casual conversations with friends in the sport, the Calgary resident was invited to Rugby Canada’s training grounds to get put through his paces and gauge his desire to try rugby more seriously. “It’s been a lot of fun,” Lumsden, 32, said on the sidelines at Westhills Stadium. He played a little rugby in high school back in Ontario and at McMaster University in Hamilton, but admitted having a steep learning curve running with Rugby Can-

ada national teamers. “There’s so much to learn. There’s a ton to this game.” While his presence at the workouts Monday and Tuesday was not directly a product of Rugby Canada’s crossover athlete recruitment initiative for the sevens program, called Try4Gold, Lumsden is the first such athlete to run through drills with the squad here since the initiative was unveiled. Having already converted from one high-level sport to another in his career, he’s familiar with the quality of athletes engaged in other sports. “I believe Canada has a very, very deep pool of talented athletes,” Lumsden said. “Having crossover athletes not only raises the exposure of the sport, but allows you to find athletes where you might not have found them before.” Try4Gold will see Rugby Canada’s high performance staff travelling across the country in search of “big, fast, agile and evasive men’s and women’s players who are mentally resilient,” women’s sevens team head coach John Tait said last week.

The District of Highlands is seeking to fill vacancies for their New Select Committees. Council adopted the Integrated Community Sustainability Plan (ICSP) in late 2012 and completed updating the Official Community Plan (OCP) in 2013 to create synergies between the ICSP and the OCP. The purpose of the ICSP is to provide a framework to identify what kind of community the Highlands residents want in the year 2030 and what needs to happen now in order to get there. Lumsden had no idea what might happen down the road, but plans to keep an open mind. “This is an opportunity and … you never want to say ‘no’ to an opportunity. Grizzlies off to a fast start in B.C. Hockey League play Club takes on a pair of Island rivals in this weekend’s action Don Descoteau News Gazette staff

The Victoria Grizzlies have an unblemished record heading into week 2 of the B.C. Hockey League season, after posting two wins in front of dozens of scouts at the Bauer BCHL Showcase in Chilliwack last weekend. The Grizzlies beat the Langley Rivermen 2-1 on Sunday, a day after Mitch Meek’s goal 3:38 into overtime gave Victoria a 5-4 win over the defending league champion Vernon Vipers. “First and foremost I really like the effort the kids put out,” said Grizzlies head coach Brad Knight. “We said from day 1 that players need to appreciate where they are and the opportunity they’ve been given. I was really proud of the kids’ work ethic. The fact they got a couple

of good results shows them if they put in the work, they’ll be rewarded.” Shawn McBride scored the eventual winner 1:54 into the third period against Langley, after a P.J. Conlon goal for Victoria made it 1-1 in the second. The Rivermen, who got a goal from Evan Anderson in the opening period, outshot the Grizzlies 35-28 and fired 17 shots at Victoria goalie Michael Stiliadis in the second period alone. The Vipers, one of two teams that beat the home ice Grizzlies in the playoff semifinals last season – Coquitlam was the other – started with a flourish Saturday at Prospera Centre, opening up a 3-1 lead after one period. Knight said his players were a little nervous given the audience, but they quickly settled down and turned the game around. The Grizzlies fought back to take the lead in the third period. A shorthanded unassisted marker from Garret Forster, his second goal of the game, made it 4-3 Victoria at the 7:31 mark and

followed Brett Gruber’s tying goal scored on the power play at 5:04. The Vipers’ Anthony Latina returned the favour with 1:16 to go, notching the 4-4 goal unassisted. Kevin Massy also scored in the win while Stiliadis went the distance for the Grizzlies, turning aside 20 of 24 shots. Victoria continues their season on the road tonight (Sept. 26) with a game against Cowichan Valley Capitals at Island Savings Centre in Duncan, and Saturday in Nanaimo versus the Clippers at Frank Crane Arena. Both games start at 7 p.m. Both the Capitals and Clippers are skilled teams with speed up front, Knight said, adding his team is in for a definite challenge. “That’s every game right now in this league. Not everyone relishes the idea of tackling major renovations in their home, even if you plan on staying for a while. For people who are getting itchy feet or are perhaps quickly outgrowing their current home, are renovations something they should consider before selling? It can depend on the type of home, and the volatility of the marketplace. Realtor Kent Deans with Pemberton Holmes Realty West Shore has seen a lot of market cycles in his 38 years in the business. There were the years when it was fairly common for homeowners to undertake a major renovation, turn around and sell the home for a profit and move on to the next one. It was a good way for some people to step up in home quality or location. Today’s balanced market on the West Shore and elsewhere in Greater Victoria, is seeing home prices stay relatively stable across the board. Spending thousands of dollars on a major kitchen remake, or on creating an open floor plan most likely won’t pay off in additional selling price, Deans says. “Renovating is good if you can do a lot of the work yourself. If you need to hire professionals, that can become very costly,” he says. “If it were a very special home, that is, waterfront or water view or architecturally designed where you would get the money back out when you sold, it’s OK to hire profession-

While many more buyers these days are looking for the upscale granite kitchen countertops and contemporary sink-and-tub combinations, he adds, the amount spent on upgrading those rooms will seldom be recouped. Newer developments on the West Shore have such features and appeal to buyers who would rather not have to do the work themselves or hire someone to do it for them. Rather than taking on a major project to improve an area of your

home you feel is lacking, or is not quite what you want, there are other options, Deans says. “Paint is cheap in the grand scheme of things. If you can freshen up the home with paint, that is the best investment you can make to sell your home, especially the front of the home, as that is where people get their first impression.” Rather than sink money into a renovation to try and impress the next potential buyer, homeowners looking to upgrade are better off in this market saving that money and perhaps spending a little more on a new one that better suits their needs. It can be better to leave the renovation job to someone else’s energy and tastes, Deans says.

Dr. Ross Crapo is accustomed to dealing with people in physical pain. But as he prepares for an annual free day of dentistry at his practice, Crapo is reminded of the emotional scarring he often discovers at his operating chair. “We see situations where folks have got more life than they have money left,” said Crapo, who along with Dr. Win Nyugen, Dr. Peter Liem and Dr. Michael Bennett will donate their time to Dentistry from the Heart at Crapo’s office tomorrow. The philanthropic program began 13 years ago in Florida and has since grown

to include more than 200 dental practices across North America. Some staff donate their time, while other expenses like sterilization and the cost of fillings and X-rays are incurred by the practice. “Most of the time, we’re helping people in pain, who have been living with this pain for a long time,” Crapo said. “And it’s something that’s become emotional for them as well.” Last year, Crapo and his team treated about 80 patients, and they hope to increase that number on Saturday. The program provides reprieve for people who otherwise can’t afford out-of-pocket medical expenses, which recent StatsCan numbers show is a growing demographic across the country. Medical expenses like prescription drugs, insurance premiums and dental care have increased significantly in Can-

ada between 1997 and 2009, according to StatsCan. Out-of-pocket health-care expenses for low-income Canadians rose by 63 per cent during that period after being adjusted for inflation. An average lowincome resident now doles out $380 per person annually on dental care. Victoria-based African AIDS Angels is getting ready for another season of “angelmaking” workshops with youth. For the past 14 years, African AIDS Angels volunteers have engaged with elementary, middle and secondary classes, providing educational presentations on the need to help impoverished African communities, and hosting angel-making workshops to help students get creative while contributing to an important humanitarian cause. Angels are made with foam templates and decorated with markers for younger

classes, while older classes make angels with peg bodies, fabric dresses, and jewelry accents. All supplies are provided for workshops with a suggested donation of $3 per foam angel and $7 per peg angel. The presentation component of the workshop will be more dynamic this season, with the new option of an engaging “Prezi” presentation or a traditional Power Point.
